Dedham Middle School TREK Program now in Session.

Recently, on a hot, sticky Summer morning, we had the opportunity to spend  a few minutes with Dedham Middle School computer technology teacher, Judy Foley. This Summer, Ms. Foley has been chosen as the DMS TREK Program Coordinator. TREK stands for Technology, Recreation, Enrichment, Knowledge – the four principals that the school`s three-week program is based on.

Now in its eight year, TREK was created in 2005 by Dr. Cathy Oravetz and Dr. Don Langenhorst. This Summer session was originally designed to help DMS students complete portions of their Summer Math and Reading homework. Over the years the program has evolved, and like the Dedham Public School System, it has continued to strive to meet the community`s needs.

Find out what's happening in Dedham with free, real-time updates from Patch.

The TREK program now offers math-strengthening skills, reading strategies, and creative writing assignments, all of which will help improve a student`s MCAS scores. In addition to working on their Summer Math and Reading, the 6th – 8th grade boys and girls take part in various Science projects and keyboarding practice on the school`s computers. Along with this academic curriculum, the TREK students participate in a daily physical activity class, which includes soccer, dodgeball, basketball, and other games with their peers.

Currently, there are 140 Dedham Middle School students enrolled in the TREK program, with interest growing each year. Ms. Foley leads a team of eight teachers, including: Carolynne Downes, Rebecca Huff, Karen Jones, Dan King, Sue Lyons, Philip Nerboso, and Andrew Patterson, along with a dozen high-school student volunteers.

Humbly, Judy Foley credits TREK`S success to the “team approach” of teaching. We have seen how this formula has worked, and worked well, throughout the district. Sitting nearby, 6th grade teacher Sue Lyons let us know, that Ms. Foley herself, has been instrumental in “keeping the program running smoothly.” “She has had her hands full, and has done a great job. All we have to do is come in and teach each day.”

We watched as Ms. Foley, file folders in hand, made her way through the cafeteria, readying five groups of 6th graders, two groups of 7th graders, and a group of 8th grade boys and girls for the day`s activities. She had “an answer” for any question posed to her, whether it was from a teacher or a student. A good team always needs a good leader, and it looks like the DMS Summer TREK Program is doing just fine.

Grade 5 & 6 homework guidelines

CLICK HERE TO GO TO PARENT MY-GRADE-PORTAL!

Beginning on the first day of school, all MTMS teachers will begin posting homework, test, quiz, and project due dates located via the links above. The following guidelines define the scope of teacher and student responsibilities. Please contact us with questions and or concerns 973-543-7107 ext 2.

Online Homework Posting Guidelines

Teachers will reproduce their in-class ‘homework board’ online every day that school is in session.  If there is no homework, the teacher will post “no homework” or “none” will be posted.

Homework, quizzes, and special projects will be placed online via links from the Middle School home page.  Tests will be posted on the homework assignment calendars and Assessment Calendars in grades 5-7 as soon as the teachers are aware of the dates.  Unannounced assessments obviously will not be posted.

All homework / assignments that are due on the next school day will be posted by the teacher by no later than 3:30 pm.  For example, assignments due on Tuesday will be posted by no later than Monday afternoon at 3:30 pm.  If it is not posted, a student will be given an extra day to complete the assignment if necessary.

Once an assignment is written on the homework board and the students leave the classroom at the end of the period, the teachers will not alter or adjust the assignment online in any way.  If circumstances arise and this does occur, see number 6 below.

Students are highly encouraged and in some cases required to utilize Google tasks and Google Calendar to log assignments. At the discretion of the classroom teacher, internet outages, webpage outages, or lack of internet access may suffice as an excuse for missed assignments.  In this case, students will be given one additional night to submit completed assignments.

If there is a ‘conflict’ between what is written on the classroom homework board and what is posted online, students will be permitted an additional day to complete the assignment ONLY if he/she successfully completes one of the assignments.  It is not permissible for students to identify the ‘conflict’ as the reason for not completing either assignment.

Beyond the School Day

DCD’s Extended Day Program (EDP) provides a safe, friendly, and nurturing environment for students beyond the regular school day. Children can participate in a wide range of projects and activities in a fun, creative and relaxed environment. DCD “EDPers” are artists, sports stars, horticulturalists, builders, actors, musicians, explorers, scientists, chefs and best of friends!

To sign up, complete the registration form on the DCD Resource Board.

Primary and Lower School Extended Day Offering

Pre-kindergarten through 5th-grade students join EDP at 3:00 p.m. After enjoying a snack together, students may participate in outdoor play, seasonal sports, and a variety of both structured and unstructured indoor activities.

All students staying for Extended Day on Fridays must bring a nut-Free lunch. For allergy reasons, no nut products are allowed.

Students needing to complete homework are provided a quiet study space where they can focus on their school work. Children are encouraged to take advantage of the special weekly enrichment programs that we offer.

Middle School Extended Day Offering

The Middle Schoolers join EDP at 4:30 p.m. After enjoying a snack, students may participate in outdoor play and seasonal sports, and a variety of both structured and unstructured indoor activities. The majority of students will have homework to complete and are provided a quiet study space where they can focus on their school work.

Many times EDP is used as a safe place for the Middle School athletes who need a place to wait for their pick-ups on game days. Much of the time this is only for a few minutes and families are never charged for time amounting to 30 minutes or less.

Extended Day FAQs

Rates for extended day program.

The Extended Day Program charges two types of rates: “registered” and “drop-in.” Registered rates apply to those children who are registered in the Extended Day Program for regular days during each week of the term. Drop-in rates apply to those children who are not registered. Because it is difficult to plan around an unforeseen number of children, drop-in service is reserved for emergencies or sudden, unexpected changes in schedule and requires twenty-four-hour notice.

To qualify for the “registered” rate your child must attend EDP at least one day a week over four consecutive weeks.

Registration for EDP is due by the first day of the school year. Complete the registration form on the DCD Resource Board. If you do not hear from EDP, you may assume that your selection has been approved. Enrollment in EDP is based on available space so it is important to secure your child’s spot in the program as soon as you are able. EDP assumes that you will continue throughout the year with your chosen days and times unless you inform them otherwise. Changing a day or time for a registered child can be done through a simple email request to the EDP Director, Megan Saia .

Time Registered Rate (per hour) Drop-in Rate (per hour)
Mon-Thurs 12pm-6pm $25.00 $29.00
Mon-Thurs 4:30pm-6:00pm* $10.00* $10.00*
Friday 12:30pm-5:30pm $25.00 $29.00

*This rate applies only to students arriving after 4:30 p.m.

The business office sends out invoices due monthly. For Financial Aid considerations and additional billing questions please contact the EDP Director , Megan Saia.

Please email the Director, [email protected] . You can also get a message to EDP staffers by way of the main office, 781-329-0850 .

Please be aware: your child is safe with us and will be attended at all times. If you can’t contact us directly for any reason to tell us you will be picking up late or have a change in pick-up personnel be assured your child is in good hands.

Drive up to the main entrance. Upon arrival please text our direct EDP line at 781-708-5592 and we will alert your student(s) of your arrival. Your child will meet you at the main entrance.

*Please note that Middle School carpool is from 4:30-4:45 and can cause a bit of chaos as well as a back-up in the driveway. If picking up during this time, we recommend parking (if possible) and walking to the main entrance to wait for your student. If you are picking up a Middle Schooler with your EDP student, there is no need to park, you can pick up your EDP student at Middle School dismissal.

EDP provides supervision for any students who are not picked up during regular pick-up times. All students, including Middle Schoolers, must attend late afternoon supervision at EDP if they are not being picked up at the normal dismissal time. Parents must pick up their children by 6:00 p.m. Monday through Thursday and Fridays by 5:30 p.m.

Please be considerate of the staff and allow enough time to meet the pick-up deadline.

Lunch is a great time for students to visit with their classmates and on Fridays with schoolmates from various grades. This is an important part of EDP and we take a half-hour or more to make sure we all have a good, healthy lunch with plenty of time to finish our meals. All students staying for Extended Day must bring a nut-Free lunch. Children are encouraged to keep any leftover food in their lunch boxes so they can have it as a snack later in the day.

For allergy reasons, no nut products are allowed.

Even though we provide water all day, at meals and snack time, many children choose to bring their own water bottles which is a great source of hydration throughout the day.
