Green Technology Innovation Fellows Welcomes Second Cohort

Fourteen Cornell MBA students, PhD candidates, and a postdoctoral innovation fellow have joined the second cohort of the Green Technology Innovation Fellows program , an interdisciplinary entrepreneurship and translation program offered by the Cornell SC Johnson College of Business .

Developed to prepare participants to lead science-based startups commercializing sustainable innovations, the program pairs graduate business students with researchers developing such innovations. Together, they collaborate to design and de-risk business models that translate science projects into impactful products and services.

“This program is designed to cultivate the entrepreneurial judgement of the next generation of science-based startup leaders; they will transform Cornell’s research into successful, high-impact startups,” said Gregory Ray , PhD ’14, program lead and lecturer at the Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management . “Our students are poised to be key drivers in the transition to a sustainable economy, playing a critical role in New York’s clean energy future and beyond.”

The program centers around Green Tech Innovation in Practice, a course in which teams participate in five workshop sessions from September to April as they de-risk business hypotheses derived from the researchers’ dissertation topics. With regular guidance from seasoned entrepreneurs, investors, and faculty members, participants will explore how to test their hypotheses and develop entrepreneurial judgment.

Empowering entrepreneurs to innovate in clean energy and climate technology

Upon completing the program, participants will have the entrepreneurial training, judgement, and mindset required to lead novel startups in the clean energy and climate technology fields.

“I hope to gain exposure on fundamental skills in leading and initiating a startup and learning the challenges that come along in the process and the needed communication skills and approaches, said Bashayer Aldakkan, a PhD candidate in Materials Science and Engineering at Cornell’s College of Engineering . “The program structure in matching me with fellow researchers and business students is exciting to me, as I hope to learn from the different perspectives outside of my domain. I also hope to learn from the stories of entrepreneurs who have gone through the process with its success, failures, and setbacks and learning the resilience skills needed to recover and succeed.”

“I hope to learn what it takes to help start a business as someone who is not primarily bringing the research expertise to the table, but more the business operations side,” said Phoebe Kyritsis, MBA ’25. “I would also like to meet more PhDs and researchers in the Cornell network and expand my understanding of the entrepreneurship network beyond just the business school.”

Crisis communication course provides new tools to state health officials

Be first, be right, be credible. That’s the crisis communication mantra for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But it’s hard to save lives with the right message when you’re competing with a flood of misinformation and noise.

To help local health officials and first responders learn critical health-crisis communication techniques, the Department of Public and Ecosystem Health in the College of Veterinary Medicine has developed a two-day training program for the New York State Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Services.

“There was a lot of backlash about communications during the pandemic, and a lot of the advice given was politicized for local responders,” said Danielle Eiseman, health impacts partnership lead in the Department of Public and Ecosystem Health. “It presented health officials and first responders with a significant challenge, especially if they had to wait for information from the state or the CDC.”

Public health officials need to better communicate to diverse internal and external audiences during health crises, requiring strong theoretical understanding of language and behavior, a firm grasp of scientific and public health issues and rigorous practice, Eiseman said. Officials can communicate effectively only if they are also skilled in these other aspects of crisis response.

Eiseman wrote the materials for the two-day course in public health risk communications, which was held first June 26 and 27 at the State Preparedness Training Center in Oriskany, New York. A second training course is scheduled for Oct. 23 and 24, drawing together state and local public health officials, first responders, emergency managers and other public sector stakeholders involved in public-health emergencies.

Led by personnel from Cornell Cooperative Extension, the Department of Public and Ecosystem Health and other departments, the training included hands-on tabletop exercises where participants apply newly learned concepts to real-world situations, such as responding to public outrage, combatting misinformation spread on social media, keeping the public safe from an emerging, unknown outbreak and building partnerships with key stakeholders.

Social media is especially tricky, Eiseman said, because it so often opens the door to misinformation, even malicious disinformation.

“It can be very difficult to communicate in the right way via social media. Recognizing this, we said let’s give people resources that they need to build up the skills in this area,” she said. But she cautions that a one-size-fits-all approach doesn’t work, pointing to new  communications materials from the Consumer Product Safety Commission targeting Gen Z with electronic dance music about taking off your headphones when you cross the street. 

“We played the song and everyone in the room said, ‘I don’t get this.’ It’s because they weren’t the target audience,” Eiseman said.

Through instruction and workshopping, with many scenarios and factsheets designed by Sabine Jamal, the outreach chair of Graduate Students in Public Health, attendees learn from real-world examples. They responded to high arsenic levels in a local playground, a meningitis outbreak before the holidays and more, the scenarios “ground-truthed” by Isaac Weisfuse, an adjust professor in the Department of Public and Ecosystem Health. 

“Participants work through the good, the bad and the ugly when it comes to communicating with different stakeholders in a crisis,” Eiseman said. The response to the training, she said, has been overwhelmingly positive with growing interest from other agencies to hold more of these trainings across New York state.

Basic Qualifications

Two doctoral students receive qualcomm innovation fellowships.

Doctoral student Ke Li and doctoral candidate Ruidong Zhang , both in the field of information science studying under Assistant Professor Cheng Zhang in the Smart Computer Interfaces for Future Interactions (SciFi) Lab , won 2024 Qualcomm Innovation Fellowships (QIF).

Li and Zhang comprised one of 16 winning teams for the QIF North America program, selected from 55 finalist teams out of a pool of 271 abstract submissions after presenting a proposal for their project, “Communication for People with Impairments Using AI-powered Synthesis on Intelligent Wearables.”

With their project, Li and Zhang aim to pair AI-powered speech synthesis with a modified eyeglasses frame to give voices to individuals who have lost the ability to speak, such as those who have had their vocal cords removed through laryngectomies.

“Traditional solutions usually involve painful surgical procedures, while only being able to recover limited voices that are coarse or machine-like,” said Zhang. “In this project, we aim to develop a pair of normal-looking eyeglasses to generate high-quality voices without invasive procedures.”

Miniature speakers and microphones will be added to the eyeglasses frame, functioning as sonar on the speaker’s face to capture facial movements during speech that will then be synthesized by generative models.

“This project aims to combine the power of novel sensing and AI for the social good to bring voice back to people in need,” Zhang said.

Qualcomm awards $50,000 per winner to the student’s university academic department to fund research expenses during the program year.

“Winning this fellowship is a great honor for me, as it signifies the recognition of the importance of our research. It highlights the potential of our proposed systems to be effectively deployed in real-world settings and to assist those in urgent need,” said Li.

In addition to the monetary award, fellowship winners have the opportunity to work with mentors provided by Qualcomm and can participate in collaborative activities or internships with Qualcomm Research.

“Receiving support and advice from experts with diverse perspectives will be invaluable,” Li said. “Along with this fellowship, we will benefit from the guidance of our assigned Qualcomm mentor, whose industry experience and resources will be crucial in helping us develop deployable hardware prototypes and evaluate our system with patients.”

The QIF program focuses on recognizing, rewarding, and mentoring graduate students across a range of technical research as it relates to Qualcomm’s core values of innovation, execution, and teamwork.
