With an increasing number of well-known organizations like IBM, General Motors, and Mondelēz International appointing female CEOs , the trend towards women in leadership positions seems to be on the rise. In fact, there are more women running Fortune 500 businesses today than at any point in the 63-year history of the Fortune 500.

However, when put in context, that’s still only 6.4% of these leading companies. And with recent high-profile stories revealing the BBC’s gender pay gap and tales of female entrepreneurs citing an imaginary male co-founder for credibility, it’s clear women’s inequality is still a big business problem.

We recently hosted a webinar with a panel of business women at different stages in their careers to discuss these issues. To hear their advice and learn from their own personal stories about combating gender stereotypes and championing the cause of women in the workplace, you can watch the webinar below. Our webinar panel consisted of Tessa Misiaszek, Associate Dean at Hult and professor of international marketing and entrepreneurship on our Boston campus. Tessa comes to us with an incredible wealth of business experience, having served as the CEO of Empathetics, run a number of start-ups, and worked as a consultant for Korn/Ferry International. She was joined by current Hult student, Rosey Singh, who has worked in the banking industry for 10 years and is the current president and co-founder of the Gender Equality in Leadership Club on the San Francisco campus. Justine Stacey, an alumna of our MBA program, also joined. Before earning her MBA, Justine spent several years working as an advocate for women’s health and empowerment around the world as VP for Girl’s Globe. Now, Justine is a marketing strategy manager for a leading financial company.

A diverse workforce is an innovative workforce.

Diversity—from gender diversity to culture, age, and race—has been shown to foster creativity and innovation. From PricewaterhouseCooper , to Disney and L’Oreal , organizations across industries are seeking to prioritize and benefit from a diverse and inclusive work environment.

Men and women will inevitably have different experiences and backgrounds, which shape their approach to business. Challenging each other and collaborating with people who think differently can breed creativity and promote the innovative ideas that push organizations forward.

Women excel at the soft skills needed for business leadership

While technical skill and knowledge are fundamental to career success, CEOs consistently cite soft skills as the most desirable professional attributes . Although characteristics like effective communication, empathy, and self-awareness are difficult to measure, they are highly valued and can make a real difference to the bottom line. Recent research has drawn a connection between strength of character and business performance—with CEOs who rank highly for attributes like compassion and integrity also enjoying a 9.35% return on assets over a two-year period.

Soft skills and emotional intelligence may prove a key competitive advantage for women in business. A 2016 study published by the global consulting firm Hay Group found that women outperform men in 11 of 12 key emotional intelligence competencies. These competencies included emotional self-awareness, empathy, conflict management, adaptability, and teamwork—all essential skills for effective leadership in the workplace

Women represent huge economic power and offer important consumer insight

It’s been estimated that women contribute in excess of $20 trillion in consumer spending every year, representing a bigger growth market than China and India combined . Women also account for 85% of consumer purchases .

Despite this, only 11% of creative directors in advertising are women—up from just 3% in 2008. When Boston Consulting Group did a comprehensive study of the “female economy” it’s unsurprising that they found women feel undervalued and underserved by the marketplace. With the power of the female consumer in mind, it’s evident that women are best placed to tap into that opportunity and bring valuable consumer insight to the table.

Tapping into the insight both men and women offer can make products and services more marketable and a business more profitable. In fact, recent research from McKinsey shows that gender-diverse businesses are 15% more likely to outperform financially above the industry median.  

Challenges for women in business

Women are still underrepresented in key fields.

While a number of industries are showing trends of a growing female workforce, sectors like finance , engineering , and tech still tend to be strongly male-dominated. In STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) industries overall, women make up just 24% of the workforce in the U.S. and less than 15% in the U.K.

Women’s under representation could be down to the continued stereotype that an interest in “hard science” is unfeminine . But with STEM occupations projected to be among the fastest growing and best paid , it’s important that women feel empowered to gain the skills and embrace the opportunities afforded by a career in science, tech, and related fields. Organizations like the National Girls Collaborative Project and Girls Who Code are working to inspire women to pursue computer sciences and engineering and close the gender gap in STEM industries.

  • Gender bias in the workplace

While most executives agree that the best person—regardless of gender—should get the job, the stories of women finding more success with a male or gender-neutral name on their CV demonstrates that unconscious bias still exists.

The women who are in or want to position themselves for leadership roles often feel they come under particular scrutiny. Where men may be encouraged to be ambitious or assertive, women are programed from a young age not to be “ bossy ”. Underlying gender bias means the same behavior and characteristics—initiative, passion, and taking charge—can be interpreted differently in men and women in the workplace.

Women are less successful when it comes to salary negotiation

Women’s own reluctance ask for higher pay is often cited as a factor behind the gender pay gap. When Glassdoor did a recent survey on salary negotiation , it found that 68% of women accepted the salary they were offered, while nearly half of the men surveyed negotiated before accepting a role. It also revealed that when women did try to negotiate their starting salary, the outcome was generally less favorable.

Challenging the notion that women don’t ask for raises, a 2016 study from Cass Business School, the University of Warwick, and the University of Wisconsin, found that women are equally as likely as men to ask for a wage increase. But they’re also 25% less likely to get one.

It’s almost an accepted truth that men have a better sense of self-belief when positioning themselves for leadership roles or negotiating pay. Even highly successful women suffer from “imposter syndrome”, feeling inadequate and underestimating their worth. Women believing in their own value and demanding a salary that reflects it is an important step in closing the wage gap, while greater pay transparency can also help to level the playing field.

Discouraging and circumventing bias through hiring policy can help organizations to reap the benefits of balance and equality. Rather than political correctness or buzzwords, if diversity, inclusiveness, and gender equality become policy and are embedded in business strategy, businesses thrive .

  • Self-doubt is natural, but don't let it overwhelm you. Remember that you are where you are because you're good at what you do.
  • Project confidence through your body language. You can do this by standing tall and keeping your head held high. Greet people with a firm handshake and a smile. Most importantly of all, make eye contact with the person you're speaking to. Try not to glance at them before quickly looking away, remember to hold their gaze, as this is a sure sign of confidence. It may feel silly, but looking at yourself in the mirror and repeating something like "I am great at what I do" or "I am determined to reach the top" can really help you to rediscover your confidence and determination.

  • You can convey assertiveness through both your speech and your actions - have confidence in your decisions and don't second-guess yourself. Speak authoritatively, in a clear, confident manner and people will have no reason to doubt your decisions.
  • When faced with criticism, try to be as rational and collected as possible. Consider what has been said and decide whether you can use the criticism constructively or whether you should just disregard it.   • Destructive criticism is a comment or accusation designed to hurt your self-esteem. It is not intended to help you or allow you to see what you did wrong and improve on it. An example of destructive criticism would be a coworker saying "How could you be so stupid?" or "What were you thinking?" The best way to deal with this type of criticism is simply to ignore it.
  • Constructive criticism, on the other hand, usually has a good intention behind it. It is intended to help you to improve and should be viewed as a positive. An example of constructive criticism would be: "Thanks for your report. It was a good effort, but I think it could benefit from more statistics to support your findings." The best way to handle this type of criticism is to thank the person for their feedback and to use their comments to improve your work in the future.

General Steps to Success

Step 1 Find your passion...

  • The road to success is long and has its fair share of ups and downs. Working towards something you're passionate about will give you strength during the tough times and added satisfaction during the good.
  • If you're not sure where your passions lie, think about going to see a career coach or a good psychologist. They will help you to identify your strengths and weaknesses and gain a clearer vision of your life goals.
  • Remember that not everyone has a pre-existing passion, it may take some time to find yours. It is also possible to become passionate about a job, with enough hard work and dedication.

Step 2 Be organized.

  • Focus on what's important. Remind yourself of your long-term goals and revise them when necessary.
  • Learn to prioritize. Decide what your goals are each day, then set daily priorities in order to achieve your goals.
  • Finish one task before you start another. Multi-tasking is overrated. Focus 100% of your attention on every task you set your mind to, whether it's responding to emails or filling out paperwork. This reduces the chances of you making a mistake or overlooking something important.

Step 3 Network...

  • Networking is all about communication — making phone calls, conducting information interviews, writing letters or connecting through online networking sites.
  • Once you have made contact with a person, it is important to try to develop a relationship with them, to keep in contact with them and to help them with any requests or favors they might have. You never know what they might be able to help you with in the future!
  • One of the best ways to network successfully is to do informational interviews. This is where you organize to informally meet with a senior colleague or other professional for lunch or coffee in order to ask questions, gain valuable information and insights and create business relationships. Once the meeting is over, thank them for their time, ask for a business card and try to stay in touch.
  • Remember: no matter how hard you work, unless you're aware of an opportunity, you're not going to get a shot at it. Your network will open up opportunities for you and your career, both now and in the years to come.

  • Find a mentor. A mentor is someone, usually with a bit more experience than you, who knows the trade, offers advice, and helps you in your pursuit of success.

Step 7 Be willing to work hard.

  • Stay away from distractions. It's difficult to focus on work 100% of the time, but when you're aiming for the top it's important to minimize distractions as much as possible. It's important to take some personal time now and again, but aim to be focused and efficient whenever you're in work mode.
  • Surround yourself with motivated and successful people. By surrounding yourself with other like-minded people you'll be forced to set yourself very high standards and to work extra hard in order to stand out.

  • Don't be afraid to fail. Failure can be a good thing, if it helps you to learn from your mistakes.
  • If you begin to feel demoralized, remind yourself of everything you've achieved already and how far you've come. Remember that your greatest achievement might be just around the corner!

They are also more cautious and more calculative when it comes to investing in risky ventures. The author will also point out the professional competencies women posses which enable them to succeed in business. Education, experience, and professional etiquette makes women as equally competent as men, and given that men hold over sixty percentage of the most influential positions in organizations globally, women often work twice as hard, they attend more trainings and workshops, and conduct themselves with more decorum to qualify for promotions. Once promoted, they steer the organizations to even greater heights.

The last part will recognize the contribution that women, through business activities, make towards the growth of the economy. As employees, women pay taxes to the government, a form of direct income to the government. As top-level managers and CEO’s, women provide job opportunities to millions of employees across the world. Some small scale business women also make their contribution. Women also form a large percentage of consumers as they purchase among others, beauty products and items that are used in homes on daily basis. In the current world where more girls are getting better grades and opting for business-related courses while others are fast advancing to senior management levels in organizations, the power and influence of women in business cannot be underestimated.

An effective conclusion for an essay will basically summarize the key aspects covered in the body of the paper. The successful business women’s traits and characteristics as well as the contribution that women make towards business and economic growth will be reiterated. Women have historically spent their lives creating families and building a home for them. These experiences help us cultivate workplace relationships. Women often choose to discuss possible solutions with more people and, in turn, gain more facts and perspectives. Combine this with a keen sense of nonverbal communication, and it’s no surprise that women, especially those with an MBA, are better positioned to make informed decisions to solve problems.

Emotional intelligence makes women successful in business

Psychology Today reports that emotional intelligence includes four parts: self-awareness, managing emotions, empathy, and social skills. Women have the capacity to tap into these skills to help navigate complex situations, support colleagues , and manage behaviors and expectations. Emotional intelligence also helps us identify and connect with others from a place of empathy and understanding. People who excel in emotional empathy make good counselors, teachers, and group leaders because of this ability to immediately sense how others are reacting.

Writing the MBA application essay for Harvard Business School can be a grueling experience. Just ask applicants who have successfully crafted an essay that helped them gain admission to the school’s prestigious MBA program.

One of the reasons why many struggle with the assignment has to do with the fact that Harvard, unlike many other business schools, poses a fairly vague and open-ended question to applicants: “As we review your application, what more would you like us to know as we consider your candidacy for the Harvard Business School MBA program?”

Our earlier examples of HBS essays, if anything, show that you don’t have to write the kind of narrative that might find its way into The New Yorker or The New York Times . Some applicants are simply gifted writers, but most are not and make their case with simple, clear prose.

One thing seems certain: Few candidates dash off an essay in a leisurely afternoon. Many of the authors of the essays in The Harbus guide say they spent months brainstorming ideas and writing multiple drafts that had the benefit of numerous critiques from other readers. A former banker who had also worked in the non-profit space said that it took her a week to write the essay, not including the planning process which began a month or two earlier. The extra time proved valuable. “Despite all the planning, I ultimately scrapped my original draft, and rewrote about
 70% of what I had after a candid conversation with a good friend and mentor,” wrote the HBS student.

“She exclaimed ‘surprise’ after reading my essay – signaling that perhaps I was not being as authentic and as genuine and I had hoped,” the student adds. “I would urge prospective students to get someone who knows you to read your essay – not just yourself or a consultant – but someone who can help reflect your unique voice. At the end of the day, most everyone has done the research, visited campus, sat in on a class, spoke to alumni/current students – so the most unique thing left is your unique story and where you want it to go. That should be emphatically clear throughout the essay and application as a whole.”

READ ESSAYS BY THREE WOMEN: A FORMER CONSULTANT, AN INVESTOR & CHIEF-OF-STAFF TO A CEO

This time, we’ve chosen statements crafted by successful women candidates: a former consultant, an investor in a private equity firm and former i-banker, and a former chief-of-staff to the CEO of a global healthcare company. Each woman takes a very different approach to the HBS essay (see Harvard MBA Essay Examples and Samples of Successful Harvard Business School Essays .

The consultant began work early, some three months before the deadline, by laying out potential themes and stories. She ultimately came up with her core message after having two to three close friends read multiple drafts. She ultimately settled on an approach that demonstrated vulnerability yet strength. Her opening sentence is compelling: “I have cried exactly four times at work.”

The investor racked up many hours brainstorming ideas, even writing an essay that she did not submit. As the application deadline approached, she kept recalling a conversation with alums who stressed that Harvard is looking to admit people who know themselves. Down to the final week, she came upon the idea that would work during a yoga class. “I realized how central my appreciation for beauty is to my life,” she explains. “I decided to change the essay and asked my parents and boyfriend to review it. The old saying “It’s a men’s world” seems to be no longer as popular as it used to. In the recent years, women entrepreneurs have become a growing force in the U.S. economy leading both firms and self-employed businesses. Scholarly data confirms women’s importance in business. Despite the fact that only a small percentage of corporate officer positions in Fortune 500 companies are held by women (as of 2006, it was 15.6%), the dimension of women’s participation in the business world is expanding worldwide and, in particular, in North America (Werhane xvii; Periz-Ortiz, Rueda-Armengot, & Osorio 343). To illustrate this statement the following examples can be used: 10.4 million firms were headed by women in 2006 (Werhane 1).Besides, these days the percentage of female students who study for an MBA degree makes up a third, while two leading schools Wharton and Harvard are about to achieve the MBA gender parity (Symonds). As more and women take leadership positions and succeed in the modern business world, the question of the key qualities women should possess for becoming successful in this sphere is getting widely discussed. This essay looks into the key qualities needed for a woman in order to succeed in business and discusses how I can develop these qualities during the studies at Hult. It also reflects on why it is important for the society to have women in leadership positions in business.

Before defining the key qualities women need to be successful in business, let us first decide what is meant by business. The accepted understanding of business is that of entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurship, in its turn, is “the study of sources of opportunities; the processes of discovery, evaluation, and exploitation of opportunities; and the set of individuals who discover, evaluate, and explore them” (Shane & Venkataraman 218 in Periz-Ortiz, Rueda-Armengot, & Osorio 345). What does entrepreneurial activity involve in terms of personal qualities? According to the researchers Periz-Ortiz, Rueda-Armengot, & Osorio, this kind of activity is carried out in three dimensions: individual, corporate, and social. The individual dimension relates to an entrepreneur’s ability to display the traits that are useful for opportunity discovery; the second one, the corporate dimension, relates to cooperation and experience related to working for an organization; finally, the social dimension is that of commitment to social needs (Periz-Ortiz, Rueda-Armengot, & Osorio 344).

Based on the definition provided above some key qualities for a woman who wants to succeed individual or corporate entrepreneurship are a strong sense of the goal, excellent leadership qualities, integrity and a strong sense of personal ethics. In the following paragraphs these qualities will be discussed in detail.

Having a strong sense of the goal is a crucial quality for a woman who wishes to succeed as an entrepreneur. If we look at career paths of successful women entrepreneurs, we will see that they have been committed to achieving the set goal and filled their everyday activity in business with that higher sense of the importance of what they do. For example, Debbie Fields, a famous U.S. female founder of a snack food imperium Mrs. Fields Bakeries, confesses that on her way to success she acted as a woman who had a mission. She says, “I would stop people, even buses I would stop and say ‘Here, you’ve got to taste these cookies’. Just try them.” (Martins).

Further, excellent leadership qualities are vital for a woman who wants to succeed in the world of business. Leadership is about the ability to inspire, motivate, and amass other people towards reaching a common goal. Also, a leader is a person who is a professional and moral authority for other people. To be a true leader any woman involved in the business world has to possess the following crucial qualities: assertiveness in taking action, willingness to explore new dimensions and learn new things, self-belief, and willingness to fail. Assertiveness in taking action is about making things happen rather than thinking that these things will happen. As Stephanie Aldrich explains, it is about taking action, proceeding forward, and “hunting the game” (Aldrich 50). Willingness to explore new things is essential for anyone engaged in business, since, as one can see from the definition, entrepreneurship is all about discovering new opportunities and exploring them. Hence, the drive to improve the existing things, discover new things, as well as gain knowledge necessary for this is very important. As for self-belief, this is the basis of any woman’s leadership qualities. All successful women entrepreneurs were driven by their self-belief. For example, Oprah Winfrey, a host of a mega-popular U.S. female talk show, was driven by her faith in her talent as a public speaker and capitalized on her talent to make her show stand out. She is now thought to be the richest African American woman in the United States, and, perhaps, in the whole world. In addition, no successful leader can evolve without being prepared for failures and having an internal willingness to fail.

Integrity and the sense of personal ethics are indispensable qualities of any woman who wishes to succeed in the business world. William Damon, a U.S. professor and researcher, advocates for a moral route to business success. While for many people, moral seems to be the last word associated with business, many successful entrepreneurs have achieved success while doing work that is “both excellent and ethical.” Integrity and ethics should be the qualities that women entrepreneurs will capitalize on.

As for me, I possess these qualities to a different extent. For example, I have a strong sense of purpose, self-belief, and integrity. Also, I can inspire and lead people to achieving the set goals and set achievable goals. I am open to new experience and knowledge, and I am rather assertive and persistent when it comes to achieving my goals. Indeed, I have that inner drive that motivates me and keeps me going in pursuing my dream career in business. However, I feel I lack knowledge and expertise needed for excellent business activity. I know I have yet to learn a lot of professional principles, professional knowledge, and learn to manage my time in a better way. Besides, I find it hard to be prepared for failures. Studies at Hult will help me gain professional expertise, will guide me through the complex web of business world concepts, principles, and relationships, and foster my leadership growth. They will help me evolve as a successful starter in the male-dominated business world and equip me with necessary academic background to lead other people to success.

Finally, I believe it is necessary to have more women as leaders, since women possess those important characteristics that men do not and those talents that me do not. Specifically, women, as the history shows, can combine critical leadership characteristics with their natural kindness, commitment to social causes, responsibilities before the communities, and moral integrity. Besides, gender parity in leadership will ensure equality in workplace and the creation of a more just world of work and business.
