Stream It Or Skip It: ‘The Wonder Weeks’ on Netflix, a Dutch Parenting Comedy

Where to stream:.

Bill Maher Defends the Trad Dad on ‘Real Time’

Stream it or skip it: ‘the pod generation on hulu, a dystopian satire starring emilia clarke as the mother of pod babies (not dragons), stream it or skip it: ‘a round of applause’ on netflix, a strange dramedy about a couple and their nihilist kid through the decades, stream it or skip it: ‘the family plan’ on apple tv+, a weirdly violent mark wahlberg action-comedy intended for families.

This week in We’re Running Out of Ideas for Movies Theatre is The Wonder Weeks (now on Netflix), which adapts a parenting self-help book into a featherweight Dutch dram-com about new parents struggling with diapers, daycare and circumcision. The directors of the two F— Love movies tell the intertwined stories of three sets of parents and their maternal-paternal mishaps and struggles, with some product placement of said tome here and there to justify the use of the title, and the result is… underwhelming? Familiar? Bland? How about all of the above?

THE WONDER WEEKS : STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?

The Gist: Unlike other movies, The Wonder Weeks opens with the PUSHHHHHHHH scene where the pregnant mom strains and groans and rips her husband a new one in the midst of giving birth. That’s Anne (Sallie Harmsen), and the soon-to-be proud papa is Barry (Soy Kroon). She’s in the bathtub and the doula’s nearby and their house is the kind of massive open-space dwelling that tells us she’s about to be made partner at the firm. And that’s a problem, because she has a career and Barry works too and they can’t find a daycare with an opening. Stress! And on top of that, a nurse counselor tells them flat-out that their baby daughter is “fat” and for that she should be fired and reassigned to a more suitable occupation, scraping the insides of septic tanks.

Anne visits the nearby daycare where she’s zillionth on the waitlist. She overhears that members of a group called Moms for Moms get to skip the waitlist, so she joins the club, which is slightly disconcertingly affluent and culty. Moms for Moms is run by Kim (Katja Schuurman), who has two offspring with her wife Roos (Sarah Chronis), and a third on the way, all fathered by sperm donor Kaj (Louis Talpe). Kaj is a bachelor who all of a sudden wants to be part of his biological kids’ lives. Kim’s reluctant but Roos thinks it might not be a bad idea, so they agree to let him take the children for a night here and there. They meet with Anne, who as I said before is about to be made partner at the firm, to hammer out a visitation deal.

We also meet Ilse (Yolanthe Cabau), who’s holding her brand-new infant son in her arms and arguing with Sabri (Iliass Ojja) about whose surname the kid gets, since they’re (GASP) not married. You’d think they’d have discussed this at least once in the previous nine or so months, but no. They go home and his Moroccan mother shows up to stay indefinitely and force them to conform to her family’s cultural norms, most prominently a big family party where the kid gets circumcised and a sheep gets sacrificed in his name. None of this sits well with Ilse.

Meanwhile, Anne and Barry deal with a baby who cries all night and a lifestyle where they work all day and a dilemma where their sex life suffers and may be exacerbated by the attractive nanny they’ve hired to help out. Things also come to a head with the Kim/Roos/Kaj situation, as Kim isn’t one who relinquishes control of any situation ever, especially when she learns that Kaj isn’t being totally honest with them about his past; he’s a good guy with good intentions who always finds himself in predicaments where he accidentally locks the toddler in the car, stuff like that. Will all this parental pandelerium resolve itself or what? NO SPOILERS.

What Movies Will It Remind You Of?: One can’t help but ponder why What to Expect When You’re Expecting became a dingbat comedy while Dr. Spock’s Baby and Child Care continues to languish unexploited by Hollywood.

Performance Worth Watching: Cheers to Louis Talpe’s Sam Rockwell Lite energy, which makes his character stand out a hair or two above the other boilerplate types.

Memorable Dialogue: Anne snickers as Kim spews new age drivel during a Moms for Moms support group: “Breathe in through your nose, and out through your vagina, your piggy bank of happiness. Let your piggy bank glow.”

Sex and Skin: Not much beyond the inevitable cliched coitus interruptus scene where the lingerie-clad mom tries to rekindle their sex life/marriage but is derailed by the crying baby.

Our Take: Hey guess what, parenting is hard! So are marriages. And assorted family dynamics. Bet you didn’t know that! The Wonder Weeks surely wants couples of all stripes to smile and nod in acknowledgment of these characters’ assorted travails: Remember, you’re not alone in this crazy thing called life. Take comfort in knowing that other people have problems, too! These wafer-thin types work through generic situations in a narrative that’s rendered so broadly, it’s as if the screenwriters feared alienating potential audiences with anything deeper than tepid greeting-card sentiments. This movie has an enemy, and it is specificity.

And that’s why this 90-minute snoozefest comes off as little more than a year in the life of some Movie Characters. With its same-sex couple and an unmarried pair from wildly different cultural backgrounds, it attempts to offer a diverse range of characters, but ends up leaning heavily on wearisome stereotypes, the most egregious being the offensive portrayal of these BACKWARDS Moroccan people that actually want to SACRIFICE a SHEEP. Beyond that, the characters are summed up with feeble cliches: The Mom Balancing a Career and Motherhood, the Control Freak, the Mother-in-Law Who’s All Up In Your Business, the Bachelor Who’s Loosey-Goosey About Schedules and Keeping His Apartment Tidy. The tone ranges from wacky to melodramatic to lightly satirical, but the entire mixture is so flavorless, it’s like one part orange juice to nine parts water.

Our Call: Wonder Weeks ? More like Blunder Reeks ! SKIP IT.

Parent and Kid Reviews

  • Parents say

There aren't any parent reviews yet. Be the first to review this title.

What's the Story?

Every obsessive over-concern in the "modern" baby care playbook is ticked off in THE WONDER WEEKS. Most of it is set up as targets for mockery. "Crying means experiencing a developmental leap," Anne (Sallie Harmsen), a new mom, is advised. Among these wealthy people, the natural phenomenon of procreating is turned into a trendy prestigious act that "enlightened" people do better than everyone else. This seems to leave little room for crucial components of parenthood -- love, sacrifice, and patience. Mom clubs are dictatorial and members must embrace questionable practices if they want to reap the perks of the best daycare. A pediatrician scolds parents for raising a "fat" baby, even though the kid looks just like every other baby. The pregnant woman (Sarah Chronis) insisting on natural delivery is forced into a medically-necessary Caesarean section. A spiritual advisor rings gongs over a baby with "chakra problems." A baby's dad (Soy Kroon) is sexually attracted to the hot young female babysitter. A lesbian couple is inconvenienced by their sperm-donor-friend's desire to be a co-parent. Wedding-style gender-reveal parties are part of this landscape. So is sensitivity to the culture wars between parents of different backgrounds as they negotiate how to raise their kids. Rigid parents devise dictatorial schedules for infant eating and sleeping but the babies refuse to adhere. "Perfect" parents, they're advised, keep having sex despite sleep deprivation, crying babies, and all-night breastfeeding. These couples, not a single parent among them, are all wealthy, living in large homes, with access to help, and with the funds to pay for care and food. The dramatic questions raised: Will the militant mom allow the sperm donor to co-parent? Will the rigid mom loosen up? Will the culturally-mixed couple agree on a sheep sacrifice at the son's circumcision?

Is It Any Good?

The satirical tone, crucial to The Wonder Years' reason for existence, gets lost in the shuffle of absurd parental obsession with raising perfect kids in a perfect way. The "troubles" (and they are minor) of three privileged couples are featured but the transitions from one couple to another feel forced. There is no throughline of narrative thematic shared experience that logically puts all these disparate couples in the same movie. And these parents remain blissfully oblivious to the fact that their "problems" are almost entirely self-created. Viewers who can identify a single self-indulgent, over-privileged parent to care about here may find something redeeming in this chronicle of what's wrong with parenting today. Everyone else can skip this.

Talk to Your Kids About ...

Families can talk about how first-time parents may feel uncertain about how to raise children and may embrace terrible advice about child-rearing. What pieces of advice would you ignore from this movie?

How do you think most new parents learn to take care of their kids?

Why do you think new parents are especially vulnerable to trendy advice? How does the movie illustrate this?

The Wonder Weeks Ending Explained – what happens with each mother?

2023 Netflix film The Wonder Weeks Ending Explained

We discuss the ending of the 2023 Netflix film The Wonder Weeks, which will contain significant spoilers and plot twists.

The Wonder Weeks   has three young mothers who want to help each other on this journey. They develop this “Mama Club” to help each other and other pregnant women. It’s a sweet premise that hasn’t been done before, and it was refreshing to see young mothers unite under one roof to help each other out.

The three couples; Anne and Barry, Kim and Roos, and Ilse and Sabri, have a unique story to which many couples can relate.

Anne and Barry just gave birth to their baby girl, and she has to return to work now that her maternity leave is finished. So that adjustment of getting back into a routine and leaving her baby to go to work is a hurdle most mothers have to endure.

Kim is the group’s founder and is married to Roos; they are a lesbian couple who seek the help of their friend Kaj (also their sperm donor) to make their dreams as parents possible.

The three have a unique dynamic, leading to a thread of different ways to have a child.

What  The Wonder Weeks  does well is show the full pregnancy spectrum and what each couple goes through. It reflects modern society and the many obstacles one can face when bringing a child into this world.

Life is never simple, and emotional moments show those struggles, along with anecdotes through the comedic moments.

The Wonder Weeks Ending Explained

As the film plays out, there are some questionable moments between Anne and Barry with their newborn causing tension between them. No one talks about the stress your marriage goes under when the newborn is the central focus of everything in your world. You tend to forget about each other and focus on the baby.

Do Anne and Barry make it?

When Mia is born, their relationship does suffer. They both work, and it’s hard for them to balance parenthood and being a working parent. Again, the adjustment causes so much stress because it becomes overwhelming. Like many children, Mia has trouble sleeping at night and constantly wakes up crying. Which shift would you take, the morning or the night? This causes Anne and Barry to slowly come to their wits end, trying to make both parts of the day work with Mia.

Anne is a workaholic and doesn’t realize that she can’t split her time with Barry and Mia and solely focuses on Mia after work. Anne finds out that Barry is attracted to someone else, and she calls it quits.

Barry moves out of the house for a while, but she soon realizes she does want to share every moment of Mia’s life with Barry, and they reconcile after she says she will work on herself.

Does Kaj get to be with his kid?

Kim and Anne have similar controlling tendencies, which is one reason she’s apprehensive about letting Kaj be part of their lives in a parental stance. In a way, their child is just as much his as it is theirs. It’s not so much the notion of co-parenting because of biology but because they don’t believe he’s responsible enough actually to take care of a child.

After a series of unfortunate events with their two other children, Roos’ water breaks, and she’s at the park with her kids alongside Anne and Kaj. Kaj helps and takes her to the hospital, and Roos goes into labor with him beside her. Instead of a natural birth, they need to operate on her and perform a C-section which scares Kim, but he is there for her.

At this moment, Kim realizes just how responsible he is and welcomes him as a third parent.

Does Ilse decide on circumcision?

Samhi’s circumcision goes a bit off the rails, and Teun accidentally gets circumcised. Ilse and Sabri have had issues communicating with one another, and they both have their opinions on their son’s name, which inevitably causes issues for them in the future. They cannot decide on many things because they think differently. Ilse and Sabri decide to keep traditions in their own way to honor them.

They choose to circumcise their son but draw the line at the sacrificial sheep ceremony because of Ilse’s wishes. Compromise is the only way to move forward and the best way to work things out.

Still for The Wonder Weeks Review

The Wonder Weeks Review: Directed by Appie Boudellah and Aram van de Rest, it is written by Appie Boudellah, Mustafa Boudellah and Maikel Nijnuis and stars Sallie Harmsen, Yolanthe Cabau, Louis Talpe, Katja Schuurman, Frederik Brom, Soy Kroon, Sarah Chronis, Iliass Ojja, Hiske Bongaarts and Miljuschka Witzenhausen, alongside other cast members. Also known as Oei ik groei! It is based on a novel of the same name by Hetty van de Rijt and Frans X. Plooij.

Adel, Appie and Mussi Boudellah join the crew as producers along with Every van de Grist, while Madelief Blanken joins on board as the casting director with Max Maloney as the cinematographer. Being a new parent is truly a challenging time, and this film attempts to represent that accurately by showing these parents struggling to find balance in their lives.

– The Wonder Weeks Review Does Not Contain Spoilers –

Making films about parenthood is always tough to nail. While every parent has a distinct experience with their unique personalised children, they all still have a sense of camaraderie that comes from being part of the same set of responsibilities. This movie brings that to the fore by showing the different kinds of parents that exist in the modern world. We often take for granted how things should be presented, and so far, this movie starts off strong, plunging us right into the bowels of difficult parenthood.

We are following three couples and their lives revolving around their children. However, they always manage to keep it healthy, showing parenthood as just one aspect of their personalities rather than it taking over their whole lives. Even when characters do that, we see that it is actually met with negative consequences that come with being so obsessed with an outcome. Moreover, the writing in this film is positive, healthy and optimistic. It is expected to bring audiences entertainment but also shares the realities at the same time.

The Wonder Weeks Review: Still 1

The writers were unafraid to be explicit and share stories that breastfeeding people go through. They made it interesting to watch every couple because they are all going through different things in their personal lives. Even though they all come together as a unit in the film because of their children, we see that their bonds go beyond that. There is love, insight, understanding and friendship between all of them because of the way their characters are constructed.

Even the Western world has yet to catch up to this kind of positive presentation of parenthood that relies on showing both sides of the spectrum instead of romanticising either side. The challenges are well-placed, carefully curated and come in at exactly the right moment in time in the story. If the creators were given a better chance, they should have jumped at turning this into a television series because the lessons in this are fit to be presented in front of people.

The Wonder Weeks Review: Still 2

Television as a method of education has completely died down due to the advent of streaming platforms. While we have access to more information than ever, our main goal is to be entertained at the end of it, and this film makes sure of that. For the two hours that we have strapped in, the characters take us on their rollercoaster-like journey up and down. Moreover, we do feel like rooting for the characters because they have real problems and challenges with sorting out priorities.

The Wonder Weeks Review: Final Thoughts

Even people who haven’t had children and are not planning to can take this film as great insight into what it is that people need to prioritise first. However, it must be noted that all of these characters come from privileged backgrounds, doing jobs and owning houses that still give them the disposable income to do things. Once again, it becomes clear that being good parents comes from good financial stability. Which might make the characters seem unrelatable but still makes for an entertaining watch.

The Wonder Weeks Review: Still 3

This writer would suggest that people watch this film because it also included a queer couple with a sperm donor, which provided some more insight into how family dynamics are personal and custom to everyone’s life. It positively brings to light people’s tendencies toward parenthood but also allows them the grace to make mistakes. It is fun, includes some mild drama and also manages to educate people on the realities of parenthood.

The Wonder Weeks is currently streaming on Netflix. Do you think this movie accurately represents parenthood? Let us know in the comments below.

The Wonder Weeks on Netflix review: An ode to the struggles of motherhood

follow icon

Netflix released a new Dutch romantic comedy movie on Friday, June 9, titled The Wonder Weeks, which primarily tries to establishes that the life of a new mother is way harder than anybody can imagine. This film is a beautiful tribute to working mothers and also to women who have just stepped into motherhood. It even focuses on relationships that get altered once a child is born into a family.

Only a mother can understand the pain of other mothers and the film does a stellar job of expressing this sentiment. The cast of The Wonder Weeks on Netflix has Dutch movie stars like Sallie Harmsen, Soy Kroon, Katja Schuurman, Sarah Chronis, Louis Talpe, Yolanthe Cabau, and Iliass Ojja.

The Wonder Weeks on Netflix: Every mother has their own story and every story is one of a kind

The official synopsis of The Wonder Weeks reads as:

"In the comedy "The Wonder Weeks" we meet three couples. First we meet successful career-focused Anne (Sallie Harmsen), who discovers after her maternity leave that her life has changed a lot since having a baby and doesn’t make her relationship with her husband Barry (Soy Kroon) any easier. Seeking help she joins a Mama's club, a society for mothers founded by Kim (Katja Schuurman)."

It continues:

"Kim is married to Roos (Sarah Chronis) and together they raise two children with the help of their good friend Kaj (Louis Talpe). Ilse (Yolanthe Cabau) and her husband Sabri (Iliass Ojja) also have their challenges. They are struggling to figure out the best way to raise their child as they both come from different cultural backgrounds. This causes friction in their relationship, especially when Sabri's mother moves in to help out."

The Wonder Weeks has a wholesome and straightforward narrative. The focus is on three different couples who have their own problems. The first couple is Anne and Barry; the former just gave birth to her baby girl and has to return back to work from her maternity leave.

She realizes how things have changed back in her office and isn't able to cope with them as she is constantly pulled between work and motherhood. Furthermore, her relationship with her husband seems to deteriorate because of her problems. To curb all this, she seeks help from a mother's club.

The group's founder, Kim, is married to Roos; they are a lesbian couple who depend on their friend Kaj for help. Kaj is also their sperm donor. Like Anne and Barry, this duo's relationship is not stable either. The third couple is Ilse and Sabri. Their problems are way different from the other couples because they belong to different backgrounds and have different ideologies to raise their newborn child.

This film is filled with drama, comedy, emotions, and a unique storyline. Few might argue about its feministic nature but in reality, it's about humanity, mutual love, and respect. The plotline revolves around the fact that every mother is unique and has their own struggles; the only constant element between each one of them is the love they have for their child. It also sheds light upon the struggles of a working mother, same-sex marriage , and interracial marriage.

The movie also sends out the message that the bumpy journey of parenthood can get smoother if there is mutual love and respect among parents. Apart from the wholesome story, everything from the direction, cinematography, music, and screenplay are well balanced. The actors do a brilliant job of portraying their roles and certainly deserve to be accoladed.

The Wonder Weeks is a great film to be enjoyed with a loved one or if you're a mother or somewhat associated with motherhood. It is now streaming on Netflix worldwide.

The guide to our grades, parent movie review by keith hawkes.

Motherhood isn’t easy for anyone. Anne (Sallie Harmsen) can’t seem to find a balance between micromanaging her newborn’s schedule while keeping up with her career as a family lawyer and maintaining her relationship with her husband, Barry (Soy Kroon). The situation is only made worse by the fact that she can’t seem to find an available day care, despite two full time incomes.

For Ilse (Yolanthe Cabau), motherhood is a tightrope walk between her Danish upbringing and standards and her Moroccan husband Sabri’s (Iliass Ojja) expectations with a newborn – and the expectations of his family.

Something tells me that I, a middle aged single white man, am not the target demographic for a movie about motherhood, but I’ll do my best to give it a fair shake. Since I’ve never planned on having kids, this movie feels more or less like a mystery to me. Since all of these parents seem to know that their child is slowly making them insane, I can’t for the life of me figure out why they wanted it in the first place – but watching them figure out how to balance the demands of their new life does have some entertainment value.

This movie isn’t geared around generating big dramatic meltdowns or pitting its characters against each other in open hostility. Really, it is a surprisingly nuanced depiction of parenting struggles, in which reasonable people who are willing to communicate with their partners have reasonable disagreements and conflicts and try to solve them as compassionately as possible. You can really tell this movie wasn’t made in North America. This is a Dutch production, and I watched it in Dutch with English subtitles – given the demographic appeal, I don’t think reading subtitles is going to be a real hardship, but Netflix has provided an English dub.

The Wonder Weeks is not exactly a thrilling ride, but it’s not excessively irritating either, and the film seems to care about the characters learning from their individual plights. The content, particularly the sexual references, make this a poor choice for younger viewers, but I think the slow parenting-focused plot would already have discouraged them. Unless you’re hoping for a sleep aid for your own newborn, this is a movie for adults – ideally, those who’ve got a few wee rugrats of their own.

Steve Martin also stars in the descriptively named Parenthood. In Dads, Bryce Dallas Howard interviews famous fathers to learn about their approaches to parenting. In a split-reality story, Look Both Ways follows a woman’s life with and without an unplanned pregnancy. With the unexpected death of her sister and brother-in-law, Helen suddenly finds herself raising three children and balancing her career in Raising Helen . A wayward mother grapples with balancing her dreams with her responsibility to the children she has neglected in Wild Rose . In Instant Family , a husband and wife decide to foster three children and wind up with more joy and frustration than they expected.

Netflix’s The Wonder Weeks: All Shooting Locations Explored

of Netflix’s The Wonder Weeks: All Shooting Locations Explored

Originally titled ‘Oei, Ik Groei!,’ Netflix’s ‘The Wonder Weeks’ is a Dutch comedy-drama movie about three young couples navigating parenthood’s tough waters. Anne is a career-oriented woman who realizes that life changes completely after having a baby, as the responsibility taints her relationship with her husband, Barry. To do something about this, she joins a society for mothers called the Mama for Mamas club, headed by Kim. Regarding the latter, she is raising two children with her partner Roos with their friend Kaj’s help. Like Anne and Barry, things are also far from fine between Kim and Roos.

In the same club, Anne meets Ilse, who also has a fair share of challenges with her husband, Sabri. Their main struggle is the cultural clash they face as they wish to raise their child differently, which is further aggravated when his mother moves in with them. Helmed by Appie Boudellah and Aram van de Rest, the film features hilarious onscreen performances from talented Dutch cast members, including Sallie Harmsen, Soy Kroon, Yolanthe Cabau, Iliass Ojja, Sarah Chronis, and Katja Schuurman. As the three couples explore the terrains of parenthood in different settings, viewers are likely to be interested in knowing where ‘The Wonder Weeks’ was filmed.

The Wonder Weeks Filming Locations

‘The Wonder Weeks’ was filmed entirely in the Netherlands, specifically in and around Amsterdam. The principal photography for the comedy-drama movie seemingly commenced in early September 2022 and wrapped up in late October of the same year. Also known as Holland, the Netherlands is situated in northwestern Europe with a few overseas territories in the Caribbean. Now, let’s not waste time and dive right into all the specific locations where the protagonists deal with the challenges of parenthood in the Netflix movie!

Amsterdam, Netherlands

All the pivotal sequences for ‘The Wonder Weeks’ were reportedly lensed in Amsterdam as the filming unit traveled across the capital of the Netherlands and made the most of its neighborhoods and streets for shooting purposes. In particular, the locales of the vibrant neighborhood of Westerpark served as one of the primary production locations for the comedy movie. This neighborhood is known for its lush green spaces, crafts markets, independent shops, iconic architecture, and an active nightlife scene, all of which might be evident in the movie.

It is a high possibility that the production team utilized the facilities of one of the film studios in the city, especially to tape some important interior scenes. On the other hand, most of the exterior shots were supposedly shot on location in different parts of Amsterdam. So, you might spot a few popular tourist destinations and landmarks in the backdrop of several portions. Some notable ones are the Oude Kerk, the Museumplein, the Royal Palace of Amsterdam, the Stedelijk Museum, the Van Gogh Museum, and the Stadsschouwburg of Amsterdam.
