Forests help in maintaining water cycle, oxygen and carbon dioxide balancing and providing shelter to many species on earth. Forests cover nearly 30% of the earth’s land. Deforestation results in destroying the habitat for many species of animals and birds, imbalance of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the ecosystem, water cycle disruption, climate change, soil erosion, fewer crops, floods and droughts, greenhouse gas effect, etc.

Causes of Deforestation

Agricultural plantations are one of the major causes of deforestation. Demand for commodities like soybeans and palm oil has increased exponentially worldwide. This results in the demand for more land and cutting down trees.

Logging is another big cause of deforestation. Wood-based industries like match sticks, paper and furniture need an enormous amount of wood. Charcoal and firewood are also useful as fuel. This results in a large part of forests being cut down.

The increase of mining to suffice the rising demand for the mineral is adding to the cause of deforestation. Coal and oil mining need forest land too. Building up of roads, railways and highways need more of these fuels thereby results in cutting down forests.

The ever-rising demand for human habitat puts the pressure on forest land. The overpopulation and the need for house and fuel are escalating the reason for deforestation.

Clearing of the forest for livestock ranching is a contributor to deforestation too. High demand for milk and milk products, meat and eggs results in the push for forest cutting.

Effects of Deforestation

Forests are the lungs of our earth. They absorb carbon dioxide which is emitted by us and gives oxygen in return. Cutting down forests results in decreased levels of oxygen and humidity from the atmosphere. This further results in drying out the tropical rainforest and increase the chances of fire. Therefore climate change is an unavoidable effect of deforestation.

Moist soil, which is nutrient for vegetation, is exposed to heat by the sun when forests are cut down. Thus the drying up of soil and its nutrients results in its erosion with rainwater. Gradually reducing the soil potential and making it barren in the future.

Trees retain the moisture in their roots thereby balancing the ecosystem. When the process is broken by cutting the trees the atmosphere and the water bodies get dried up. Destroying forests affects the atmosphere, water cycle, and water bodies.

80% of the world species belongs to Tropical Rainforest. While destroying the forest, the existence of these species is in danger. This is a great loss of biodiversity.

Educating people around us would create awareness about the negative effects of deforestation. Planting more and more trees and using renewable wood resources can be of great help. Eating less meat or turning vegan would protect the forest from livestock ranching. Reduce and recycle the use of paper. The government must have forest-friendly policies. It shall ban the cutting down of forests.

Due to deforestation, the carbon dioxide is not being used up by the trees during photosynthesis and is getting confined in the atmosphere. The carbon dioxide traps heat from the sun, which leads to an increase in temperature and contributes to global warming, also known as the greenhouse effect.

The water cycle of the planet is also being affected due to deforestation. When the trees are being removed, they no longer are extracting groundwater and releasing it into the atmosphere, which results in drier climates.

With the trees being cut down, there is nothing to hold on the fertile soil, which leads to soil erosion and sweeping the land into the rivers. Incidents like forest fires also destroy the trees on a large scale. Few people are even cutting down trees to fulfil their live hood which like selling firewood, other crafts & many more. The paper we are using every day is also made by cutting trees. We all need to understand that nature is the best gift we ever got. The trees are the essential & essential part of this ecosystem. If we keep destroying them day by day, then the end of this misbalanced ecosystem is not far. The loss of forest not only has misbalanced the ecosystem but also it has displaced the animals & birds from their natural habitats, who are homeless now.

So first let me, deep-dive, into the causes of deforestation. Out of the many causes, one of the leading cause is the population explosion. It has increased the demand for food as well as the space required to leave. Growing cities, factories are being set up by clearing up the forest. Agricultural lands are increasing day by day. Now the question arises after being aware of all these things are we doing anything to stop it? The answer is yes, we are already a making effort for the thing. Plantation week is celebrated in our school every year in which we plant new saplings & take care of the plant for the rest of the year. We are also trying our best to reduce the wastage & usage of paper wherever it is possible. Digitalisation is one of the critical tools which has helped us a lot. Also, many people are putting effort in the same way we are doing around the world.

Deforestation is decrease of forest cover of an area. World forest cover of 7000 million hactares has been reduced 2400 million hectares in 2000.

It is estimated that about 40% forests have been lost in the tropics compared to 1% loss in temperatre regions.

In India, at the beginning of 20th century forest cover was about 30% of the total land. By the end of the century, it shrunk to 19.4%, where as National Forest Policy (1968) of India has recommended 33% forest cover for the plains and 67% for the hills.

Causes of Deforestation :

1. Jhuming:

Slash and burn agriculture is commonly called as Jhum cultivation. In this process the farmers cut down the trees of the forest and burn them. The ash is used as a fertilizer and the land is then used for farming. After cultivation, the area is left for several years so as to allow its recovery. The farmers then move to other areas and repeat this process. Technically it is called as shifting cultivation.

2. Hydroelectric Projects:

Man made dams, reservoirs and hydroelectic projects submerge forest areas, killing all plants and animals.

3. Forest fire:

Huge forest fires in dry seasons destroy large patches of forests.

4. Human Establishment:

There is an increasing demand for agricultural land in order to grow more food crops for feeding the growing human population which is done through clearing forest areas. Forest land is also used for building more residential complexes and industrial townships.

5. Mountain and Forest Roads:

Construction of roads and railway tracks in hilly forested areas results in lot of deforestation, landslides and soil erosion.

Canals constructed for irrigation under irrigation projects destroy lot of forest areas and cultivated land.

7. Overgrazing:

The population of livestock in India is about 500 million but grazing area is only 13 million hectares. One hectare of land supports only 6 livestock. The remaining naturally graze in forests causing destruction of seedlings and causing compaction of soil. The latter reduces water holding capacity and increases run off. It is an attempt to increase green coverage through forestry by the people, of the people and for the people. Plantation of trees in schools and colleges through Van Mahotsava, tree plantation in road sides, barren lands, canal sides, public parks and picnic spots etc.

3. Agroforestry:

It is a system of growing plants (forest trees) with agricultural crops.

Agroforestry includes:

(i) Agro-silviculture – tree, crop plants, medicinal herbs, fruit plants are groomed together.

(ii) Agro-silvo-pastoral practice – trees, crops, grasses and sedges are grown together,

(iii) Silvo-pastoral practice – Forest, trees, grasslands are raised together

(iv) Socio-agro-silviculture – coffee, rubber, paper pulp producing trees, crop plants and forest trees are grown together.

Slash and burn agriculture is usually defined as Jhuming cultivation. This process involves cutting down of trees from the forests by the farmers in order to put them to fire. Since our campaign is about growing more trees and preserving our environment, as an organizer of this campaign, I considered it extremely important to address the topic called deforestation. Deforestation, as well all know, is about clearing away trees and forest land which is immensely disastrous for our environment. It would completely be a futile exercise if we go on growing trees on the one hand and cutting them down on the other. To make this campaign successful, we first need to put a stop on such a heinous activity and prevent men from destroying our nature.

Quite often, many trees are being cut down and forests are destroyed for man’s selfish interests. But do we even realize how important forests are for all of us? Let’s understand in what way forests are beneficial for us:

Forests are often preserved because they provide protection against natural calamities. When forest areas are destroyed, the soil also gets spoiled and this process is called soil erosion. Trees also play an important role in carbon sequestration. When the trees get rotten or burnt, the carbon present in them goes back to the atmosphere in the gaseous form, i.e. carbon dioxide form. As we all know that carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas, the process of deforestation leads to global warming. Sadly, it’s tropical deforestation which contributes nearly 20% towards the emission of world greenhouse gases.

If we want to contribute to our environment and preserve it for our next generation, then it will require collective efforts. Of course, any unlawful or unethical activity has to be prevented from taking place, which means no cutting down of trees and clearing of forest lands. Trees help sustain living beings on this earth, we not only get vegetables, fruits, herbs and medicinal extract from plants and trees, but also get purified air and oxygen to breathe which is of utmost importance for human survival.

So let’s take a pledge in this campaign that we will plant more and more trees in our living surrounding and help in the preservation of our natural wealth as well. I also invite suggestions from everyone present here to share their thoughts on the same and make this campaign a success.

I am extremely glad that I am being assigned the topic called Deforestation to talk about. I am a lover of nature and love to be surrounded with rivers and trees. So when I see men assaulting nature, destroying trees and polluting rivers, I feel extremely annoyed and want to urge our government to take strict measures against such people who harm nature for their own selfish interests.

Thus, deforestation means shrinking of a forest land in terms of area. You would be surprised to know that the forest cover land of 7,000 million hectares has faced a steep decline globally and come down to 2,400 million hectares of land in the year 2000. It is calculated that nearly 40% of the forest land cover has been lost in the tropical region in comparison to about 1% loss in the temperate regions.

In our country, at the dawn of the 20 th century, forest cover area was reported to be 30% of the entire land. However, when the century came to an end, it declined to about 19.4% whereas India’s National Forest Policy (1968) has advised 67% forest covers for the hilly areas and 33% for the plain areas.

Now, let’s understand how deforestation affects our environment:

It leads to an increase in the concentration of Carbon Dioxide in our atmosphere;
The quality of soil gets deteriorated as it first gets dried up and further eroded by water and wind;
Deforestation also reduces rainfall, increases the threat of draught;
It creates an imbalance in the atmosphere by making summers hotter and winters cooler;
Availability of fuel wood and timber has got much reduced. Also, such products as gums, latex, resin tannin and lac are scantily available;
Lack of forests results in soil erosion and ultimately desertification, which is a complete waste. Fertile and moist forests land gets transformed into deserts owing to a decline in the rainfall amount and thus no news of floods make rounds.

Desertification as the term mentioned above is not similar deforestation, so let’s understand the difference between the two:

Desertification
It is about the change of fertile and moist land into an arid desert place;
Temperature gets either low or high;
Rainfall is much less than evaporation;
Floods do not take place;
Desertification happens due to soil erosion;
Decertified land is an absolute waste which cannot be used for any constructive use.
Deforestation
It is about decrease in the forest land cover;
It causes erosion of soil;
Occurrence of rainfall is reduced;
It triggers flash floods;
Potential to moderate temperature gets affected.

Thus, when so much worse happens to our environment due to deforestation, our government should impose a complete ban on this exercise and rather spread awareness amongst the people to grow more trees. Even though so much has been propagated and done in the past, the movements like the very famous Chipko Movement, Silent Valley Movement and Tehri Dam Development, to name a few have spread greater awareness amongst the masses and led to the preservation of forests and of course our nature.

But this is not the end as our young generation of today has to take charge of the things from there and raise the conscience of people against killing trees and forests.

It goes without saying that trees are a life giving source for all the living species yet man is bent on destroying that very source which is a reason behind our existence on earth. Deforestation should not be encouraged at any level by our government because the process of cutting down trees or burning of forest trees and woodland is not a sound act.

This activity smacks of man’s great selfish interest whereby he can do anything to make his life comfortable and easy going. It is true that with the ever growing population the present residential places are not enough and therefore usurpation of forest land takes place. Other than this, slow growing trees have been replaced with fast growing plants and woods, which implies that the conversion of the valuable eco-system of the forests into comparatively less valuable bio-diverse ecosystems, like plantations, cropland and pasture as well as clearing away of rainforest trees.

There are two chief issues related to deforestation. Firstly, trees as we all know absorb CO2 thereby reducing the amount of carbon dioxide from our atmosphere. Carbon is a chief contributing factor towards global warming and by keeping a check on the emission of such gases can help to slowdown and even prevent the greenhouse effect from happening.

The other concern is that trees are often cut off and set on fire. The wood derived from the trees is also thrown away and is not used for any constructive purpose. Moreover, wood burning emits carbon into the atmosphere and other dangerous greenhouse gases even then cutting down on the number of trees, which would have helped to remove these harmful gases from the atmosphere is not forbidden. Tropical deforestation also leads to global warming and contributes to almost 20% of all the greenhouse gases and leaves a significant impact on the global marketplace.

Following are the reasons why deforestation takes place: Overpopulation, urbanization, globalization and climate. Trees are regularly destroyed to clear the land for construction and farming purposes. Trees are then used as firewood.

In fact, globalization in several other countries has caused deforestation because of the growing need of factories and industries which in turn led to the emission of carbon dioxide; thus greatly affecting our living environment and of course the living species. China and India are big examples of this phenomenon. China is a big market which manufactures and supplies many products across the globe.

However, I would like to bring home the point that trees should always be preserved and never cut down because they not only provide us with various food products as well as medicinal substances, but also play a crucial role in absorbing green house gases such as carbon dioxide. It is because the number of trees is declining the presence of green house gases in our atmosphere is also increasing, thereby increasing the temperature of our earth. Another worst impact on our environment of deforestation is the increasing number of droughts and floods. When forests are cleared, the normal flow of water is disrupted thereby leading to the situation of abnormal droughts and floods.

Therefore, we must stop this assault on nature and strictly prohibit others also not to do so; the negligence of which must be followed by some punishment. This is all I have to say!

I, Smriti Kaushik from Class-XII (B), heartily welcome everyone to this “Grow More Trees” Campaign. Before I begin with my speech on the topic called Deforestation, I would like to thank our hon’ble principle, vice principle and teachers for running this campaign and lending all their support for its successful execution. I also would like to thank my fellow students for remaining so pro-active and cooperative all the time.

To my respected Class Teacher and dear Friends – Warm Greetings to all of you!!

Now, let’s understand how deforestation affects our environment:

It leads to an increase in the concentration of Carbon Dioxide in our atmosphere;
The quality of soil gets deteriorated as it first gets dried up and further eroded by water and wind;
Deforestation also reduces rainfall, increases the threat of draught;
It creates an imbalance in the atmosphere by making summers hotter and winters cooler;
Availability of fuel wood and timber has got much reduced. Also, such products as gums, latex, resin tannin and lac are scantily available;
Lack of forests results in soil erosion and ultimately desertification, which is a complete waste. Fertile and moist forests land gets transformed into deserts owing to a decline in the rainfall amount and thus no news of floods make rounds.

Desertification as the term mentioned above is not similar deforestation, so let’s understand the difference between the two:

Desertification
It is about the change of fertile and moist land into an arid desert place;
Temperature gets either low or high;
Rainfall is much less than evaporation;
Floods do not take place;
Desertification happens due to soil erosion;
Decertified land is an absolute waste which cannot be used for any constructive use.
Deforestation
It is about decrease in the forest land cover;
It causes erosion of soil;
Occurrence of rainfall is reduced;
It triggers flash floods;
Potential to moderate temperature gets affected.

But this is not the end as our young generation of today has to take charge of the things from there and raise the conscience of people against killing trees and forests.

Environment is where life begins and continues. Our growth and maturation are both determined by and directed by this factor. Because of our need for water, housing, food, and various other things, human beings rely entirely on the ecosystem surrounding them. A natural cycle is maintained in a state of equilibrium between the environment and all living things. The deterioration of the natural environment, which affects the lives of people living on this planet, is attributable primarily to human activity.

Ten lines on a 2-minute speech on the Environment

Maintaining a clean environment is critical to the continued survival of all life forms.

Members of the society have a responsibility to advocate for the passage of legislation that limits the pollution of the environment.

The government needs to develop specific regulations to lessen the impact of various activities on the natural world.

Electronic media is one of the best resources for raising awareness about environmental issues and communicating the message that they are essential.

It is necessary to increase the number of restrictions that are enforced against the usage of plastic. We can rescue our ecosystem in such a case.

Vehicle pollution is one factor that threatens our ecosystem's health.

Everyone should make keeping the environment clean their number one priority. They also need to increase the number of trees they plant and educate more people about the importance of maintaining a clean and green environment.

One of the most effective methods for maintaining a clean environment is utilising materials salvaged from used or discarded items.

Earth is only planet we have and it’s our duty as inhabitants to ensure that we leave this planet in a better condition for future generations.

We must use only some resources, such as coal, natural gas, oil, etc. Instead of consuming resources that will eventually run out, we might use renewable resources like wind, biomass, and sunshine.

Everything we consume, breathe, and sleep on comes from the natural world. The interaction between the environment and humans is part of a cyclical system that maintains a delicate equilibrium. Because of excessive human activity, the ecological system's delicate equilibrium has been disrupted. Human civilisations significantly contribute to deteriorating animal circumstances and environmental health, threatening the survival of humans, marine mammals, and other species.

Consequently, the planet we live on is becoming more polluted and hotter, and several species are becoming extinct as a direct result of this. The environment has been ruthlessly exploited due to the current ecological catastrophe. Changing interactions with the natural world is a result of progress in both technology and medicine. Humanity can solve the situation if it chooses to do so.

Population Growth

Attitude shifts must come first. Fast population growth in certain regions is exacerbating the planet's environmental crisis. A rise in the human population has led to a depletion of the Earth's natural resources. This is going to be a significant issue for future generations. This has far-reaching consequences, including soil erosion, subterranean water depletion, scarcity of fresh drinking water, increased air temperature, melting ice caps, and a rising sea level.

We must all take responsibility for our actions and strive to protect the environment for the benefit of current and future generations. We must take action to address the environmental issues we are facing, whether it be through small changes in our daily lives or larger efforts to promote conservation and sustainable development. Let us work together to preserve the beauty and diversity of our planet.

The Story Of Wangari Maathai

Wangari Maathai was a Kenyan woman who was deeply concerned about the degradation of her country's environment. Born in 1940 in a rural area of Kenya, she witnessed firsthand the effects of deforestation and soil erosion on her community.

She began her activism in the 1970s, when she started a movement to plant trees and educate her community about the importance of conservation. She founded the Green Belt Movement, an organisation that aimed to combat deforestation and promote sustainable development. Her organisation began by encouraging women to plant trees in their local communities, and it quickly grew to include reforestation, soil conservation, and environmental education programs.

Maathai's efforts led to the planting of over 50 million trees and the creation of jobs and food security for thousands of people in her community. Her work also helped to improve the health of the local environment by reducing soil erosion and promoting water conservation.

Maathai's efforts were recognized internationally, and she received numerous awards for her work, including the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004. She was the first African woman to receive this award, and it brought global attention to the importance of environmental conservation and sustainable development.

Wangari Maathai's story is an inspiration to many, showing that one person's actions can make a significant difference in protecting the environment. She dedicated her life to the protection of the environment and the improvement of the lives of the people in her community. Her legacy continues to inspire many to take action to protect the environment and promote sustainable development.

Good morning one and all. Respected Principal, teachers and my dear friends, it is my pleasure and privilege to stand before you today. I am honored to have this opportunity to speak to such a distinguished audience.Today on this occasion, I would like to talk about the importance of trees and a grim environmental issue that is threatening the very existence of our planet and its inhabitants.

This maintains a balance in the environment and nourishes living organisms with the required amount of oxygen. Carbon dioxide is a primary greenhouse gas and its increasing levels has been one of the major causes of climate change.

This also leads to a great loss of biodiversity. The flora and fauna is lost and many species become endangered and some even go extinct. The next case in point is the damage deforestation causes to the soil and the consequent erosion that follows. The roots of trees hold the soil together firmly and when these trees are felled, the soil is let loose and that leads to landslides that can cause massive destruction of life and property.

Deforestation is also accountable for droughts and water scarcity as trees help in releasing water from the soil into the atmosphere through a process called transpiration. Finally, the burning of trees releases pollutants into the air causing air pollution and respiratory problems.

In conclusion, deforestation is an environmental issue of severe magnitude that calls for the immediate attention of all people and especially the authorities that should work in solving this problem. What the world needs now is to save the trees and invest in sustainable development and a greener lifestyle that is inclusive of all living organisms.

The word “ Biodiversity ” is made by clubbing “bio” and “diversity”. Here bio represents lifeform and diversity means variety. Hence, Biodiversity simply refers to the variety of lifeforms at a particular place. Biodiversity helps maintain the ecosystem on the planet.

In this article, you will get some examples of speech on biodiversity and its conservation. You will also get to know how biodiversity conservation can help in environmental conservation and sustainable development.

Hello and welcome all of you gathered here. I am here to present a speech on biodiversity.

We see a variety of lifeforms around us such as animals, trees, insects etc. This variety is called biodiversity. Biodiversity helps in maintaining the ecosystem on the planet. For example; trees release oxygen and inhale carbon dioxide while we exhale carbon dioxide and inhale oxygen.

In short, trees and humans supplement each other. If one of them disappears the other will face the consequences. Just like this, each organism has a distinct purpose and is a contributor to balancing the ecosystem.

If biodiversity gets disturbed, environmental processes will get disturbed too. Consequently, each living being will suffer. This is why biodiversity conservation becomes a responsibility for sustainable development so that our future generations can live a better life, not the worst one. Thank you!

I cordially welcome all of you gathered here. I am here to deliver a speech on biodiversity. Before I start my speech, I would like to wish you a good day. Also, I want to thank you for having me this valuable opportunity.

Did you ever visit a zoo? Of course, you did, I guess. You see countless living organisms there. You also see different varieties of animals, birds, insects and aquatic animals in a zoo. This variety of living organisms is called biodiversity .

Each of the lifeforms you see has a unique purpose in maintaining the ecosystem and sustaining the life on the planet. For example; trees help other animals breathe by providing oxygen, birds help farmers in agriculture by eating insects, and even a bacteria called lactobacillus helps us in digestion.

Therefore, every living thing is important for sustaining life on the planet. If one goes extinct, others have to suffer problems. Most importantly, each one of us is dependent on other living organisms.

Despite being so important for our survival, we are destroying our biodiversity. We are destroying forests which are home to a lot of animals, birds and insects. If this happens continuously for a long time, we will have to face severe outcomes.

At last, I want to say that it is very important to conserve our biodiversity so that we can witness a good future for humans and other organisms on the planet. Biodiversity conservation is one vital factor for environmental conservation and sustainable development for all.

3-Minute Speech On Biodiversity

“Biodiversity starts in the distant past and it points toward the future”. This is one of my favourite quotes which describes how biodiversity is related to sustainable development .

Before heading ahead to my speech on biodiversity, I would like to wish you all the best wishes and also want to pay thanks for having me this valuable opportunity.

In the same way, there are a lot of environmental processes that take place in the presence of specific organisms. A decrease in the number of any organism can lead to many problems for others. Now, it is clear how important is our biodiversity.

Unfortunately, there are lots of threats to biodiversity. Let me tell you about a few. First of all, a constant change in the climate is endangering many species. Second, deforestation expells wild animals from their homes and eventually, they die of the lack of food and shelter.

Third, pollution and chemicals discharged into the water bodies cause many aquatic animals to die. Number four, the smuggling of rare plants, trees, animals, their skin, their bones and other byproducts is one of the most critical threats to biodiversity.

We have lost a range of biodiversity in the past. It is high time to save our biodiversity. We need to put effort to build a perfect planet to live in. An individual can do the following things to conserve our biodiversity

Setting up a home garden.
Using organic agricultural methods to save microorganisms
Discouraging the practice of deforestation
Encouraging the practice of Afforestation
Prevention of smuggling of animals and their body parts
Prevention of smuggling of plants, trees and byproducts
Feeding the stray animals

To sum it up, biodiversity is one important aspect of the planet for the execution of life effortlessly. Now, humans must take control of their actions against the ecosystem for sustainable development.

These are my thoughts on biodiversity. I hope my speech was informational. Thank you again.

Misleading GOP videos of Biden are going viral. The fact-checks have trouble keeping up.

More Americans may think President Joe Biden tried to sit on a nonexistent chair the other day than know the boring truth that there was, in fact, a chair .

The chair-that-was-there was just one of many quick video clips the conservative media ecosystem willed into virality over the past two weeks, leaving fact-checkers and Biden’s team with little chance to catch up.

The Republican National Committee, major conservative media outlets and right-wing influencers have succeeded in blasting out videos that they claim show “proof” of Biden’s wandering off , freezing up or even filling his pants with a substance commonly represented by a brown swirl emoji.

Independent fact-checkers and the Biden campaign have pointed out that the videos, while they are un-doctored by artificial intelligence, tend to crumble under even basic scrutiny, such as when the moments are viewed in context or from wider camera angles .

“Fresh off being fact checked by at least 6 mainstream outlets for lying about President Biden with cheap fakes, Rupert Murdoch’s sad little super PAC, the New York Post, is back to disrespecting its readers and itself once again,” White House spokesperson Andrew Bates said in a statement in reference to a video of Biden at a fundraiser with former President Barack Obama over the weekend that landed on t he cover of the Post, a conservative tabloid.

While "deepfakes" are misleading audio, video or images that are created or edited with artificial intelligence technology, a "cheap fake," according to researchers Britt Paris and Joan Donovan, is a " manipulation created with cheaper, more accessible software (or, none at all). Cheap fakes can be rendered through Photoshop, lookalikes, re-contextualizing footage, speeding, or slowing."

Still, even if they are deceptive, the videos nonetheless play into voters’ existing concerns about Biden’s age and are tailor-made for internet virality, meaning busy voters may be more likely to encounter the brief incendiary clips than the more rigorous fact-checks that chase them.

“The lie is sprinting the 100-meter dash and the fact-check is taking a stroll on the beach. So it’s never going to catch up. And it’s never going to have the same reach,” said Eric Schultz, a Democratic strategist and Obama spokesperson who on Sunday publicly called out the Post’s characterization of the fundraiser as false.

Last week, Republicans pushed a video of Biden in Europe attending the Group of Seven summit in which he allegedly “wandered off” in a confused haze before Italy’s prime minister pulled him back. Uncut video and shots from wider angles showed Biden was greeting a parachutist who had just landed as part of the ceremony.

The controversy generated by the video grew so large that British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak was asked to give his eyewitness account of the moment.

“They had all landed, and he was being very polite. And he just went over to kind of talk to all of them individually,” Sunak told reporters .

Before that, the RNC’s opposition research account suggested Biden was having a medical incident because he was not dancing at a Juneteenth event, though Biden has long said he is not much of a dancer and barely danced at his inaugural ball in 2021.

At the fundraiser in Los Angeles, Biden and Obama were waving to supporters after having received a standing ovation when Biden stared into the audience for a moment before the more punctual Obama signaled it was time to leave the stage. Several people at the event said they did not recognize the New York Post’s interpretation that Biden appeared to "freeze up."

'A pattern of behavior'

Republicans are unapologetic about the individual videos — despite the fact-checks from mainstream media they distrust.

“It’s a pattern of behavior. It’s not like it’s one instance,” Trump campaign spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said in an interview. “It’s not like we’re making these videos. This is Joe Biden in real time. We’re just putting it out there for the world to see.”

Asked about the clipped video that Republicans said showed Biden trying to sit in a chair that did not exist (in fact, it was just hidden from view by the camera angle), Leavitt said, “The videos speak for themselves.”

“It’s outrageous that the words ‘cheap fake’ [are] even being used," she said. "There’s nothing cheap or fake about these videos. They are real clips of Joe Biden acting bizarrely.

“The Biden campaign’s entire strategy is to convince people not to believe their own eyes,” she added.

The spread of the videos underscores what academics say could be a particularly tumultuous election cycle . Many major social media platforms have rolled back the few checks and balances on the spread of false or misleading information under pressure from Republicans . Meanwhile, the power and reach of just a handful of accounts on X can spread talking points to millions of people that is then picked up by more mainstream conservative media.

Taking liberties with video editing — or simply misrepresenting what is happening in a video — is nothing new. But former President Donald Trump’s takeover of the Republican Party has pushed the party further across the hazy divide between spin and mendacity, while technology has allowed for clips to be cut and broadcast constantly.

Reaching voters who do not consume much political news is a challenge in the best of cases, and it is made even harder when organizations try to reach the same voters a second time to try to change their views about a stray piece of political content they previously encountered.

Conservative media outlets disseminating such clips include not only famously ideological ones, like Fox News , but also the vast network of local TV news stations owned by Sinclair Broadcasting, dozens of which re-packaged identical versions of the same headline about Biden’s appearing to freeze.

Few in conservative media have offered any resistance to the onslaught of videos. Howard Kurtz, a Fox News host and media journalist, is one of the few notable outliers , having called out the New York Post and fellow host Sean Hannity for their coverage of the G7 video.

And internet platforms’ algorithms and their users’ organic behavior tend to reward the surprising and controversial while ignoring the mundane.

'We can't stop them from doing this'

Democrats’ strategy for dealing with the videos is twofold, according to multiple people familiar with the thinking of the Biden campaign, the White House and allied outside groups.

First, they will try to contain them to the conservative media ecosystem and extremely online spaces of political discourse like X, hoping to prevent them from breaking through into the mainstream as much as possible.

By being aggressive in fact-checking, quickly posting fuller video clips with appropriate context and calling out media outlets that report on them, the White House and the Biden campaign hope to stop them from spreading too far.

“We can’t stop them from doing this. What we can do is fight like hell to get fact-checks and to spread those fact-checks,” said a Biden campaign official who requested anonymity to speak candidly about strategy. “Does it potentially permeate out to independent voters? Yes, and that’s what we’re guarding against and fighting against.”

Second, Democrats are stepping up their own attacks on Trump online, aggressively posting their own made-to-go-viral videos of Trump’s verbal cul-de-sacs, curious tangents and awkward actions.

They include highlighting what they say are Trump’s senior moments, such as one at a rally Saturday night when he said Biden “should have to take a cognitive test” — only to moments later flub the name of the doctor who administered a similar test to him.

Much of it has come from Biden HQ, an account the Biden campaign’s research and rapid-response teams use to blast Trump. For instance, in one clip from the same event , Trump promised to take questions after his speech — “This is different than Joe Biden. He doesn’t take any questions” — but instead left the stage without taking any questions.

Schultz said: “Both candidates are old, but one is coherent and has cogent thoughts. So to the extent that that breaks through, then I think we’ll be OK come November.”

Trump’s campaign has also complained about the Biden campaign’s deceptively portraying videos of its own in the past. That included when Trump told autoworkers there would be a “ bloodbath ” if he is not elected. Trump’s campaign said that the term specifically referred to the auto industry and that Democrats intentionally mischaracterized it by making it appear that Trump was inciting violence.

Still, Democrats up to and including Biden himself — hardly a digital native — seem to understand the challenge of suppressing viral videos that many Americans want to believe.

“The truth is that the way in which we communicate with people these days, there’s very little — there’s so much opportunity to just lie,” Biden said at the fundraiser in Los Angeles. "So much of it on the internet is absolutely a flat-out lie.”

First lady Jill Biden took on the issue of Biden’s age head-on Saturday at an event for seniors in Phoenix: "Joe and the other guy are essentially the same age, so let’s not be fooled."

According to polls, voters so far do not agree with her. And some Democrats seem to be constantly bracing for some major, unedited moment when Biden shows his age.

NBC News ’ national poll in late January found three-quarters of voters, including many Democrats, saying they had major or minor concerns about Biden’s physical and mental health.

He told an Australian TV station last week that he wanted his comedy to be a refuge from politics.

“We all want to forget about it for a couple of hours,” he said. “That’s the whole idea of the show. Forget about everything for a couple of hours.”

In December, Seinfeld traveled to Israel to meet with hostages freed by Hamas amid the ongoing war against Israel in Gaza and has faced hostility at some public appearances since.

Using AI to decode dog vocalizations

Leveraging a human speech model to identify different types of barks

Have you ever wished you could understand what your dog is trying to say to you? University of Michigan researchers are exploring the possibilities of AI, developing tools that can identify whether a dog’s bark conveys playfulness or aggression.

The same models can also glean other information from animal vocalizations, such as the animal’s age, breed and sex. A collaboration with Mexico’s National Institute of Astrophysics, Optics and Electronics (INAOE) Institute in Puebla, the study finds that AI models originally trained on human speech can be used as a starting point to train new systems that target animal communication.

The results were presented at the Joint International Conference on Computational Linguistics, Language Resources and Evaluation.

“By using speech processing models initially trained on human speech, our research opens a new window into how we can leverage what we built so far in speech processing to start understanding the nuances of dog barks,” said Rada Mihalcea , the Janice M. Jenkins Collegiate Professor of Computer Science and Engineering, and director of U-M’s AI Laboratory.

“There is so much we don’t yet know about the animals that share this world with us. Advances in AI can be used to revolutionize our understanding of animal communication, and our findings suggest that we may not have to start from scratch.”

One of the prevailing obstacles to developing AI models that can analyze animal vocalizations is the lack of publicly available data. While there are numerous resources and opportunities for recording human speech, collecting such data from animals is more difficult.

“Animal vocalizations are logistically much harder to solicit and record,” said Artem Abzaliev, lead author and U-M doctoral student in computer science and engineering. “They must be passively recorded in the wild or, in the case of domestic pets, with the permission of owners.”

Because of this dearth of usable data, techniques for analyzing dog vocalizations have proven difficult to develop, and the ones that do exist are limited by a lack of training material. The researchers overcame these challenges by repurposing an existing model that was originally designed to analyze human speech.

This approach enabled the researchers to tap into robust models that form the backbone of the various voice-enabled technologies we use today, including voice-to-text and language translation. These models are trained to distinguish nuances in human speech, like tone, pitch and accent, and convert this information into a format that a computer can use to identify what words are being said, recognize the individual speaking, and more.

“These models are able to learn and encode the incredibly complex patterns of human language and speech,” Abzaliev said. “We wanted to see if we could leverage this ability to discern and interpret dog barks.”

The researchers used a dataset of dog vocalizations recorded from 74 dogs of varying breed, age and sex, in a variety of contexts. Humberto Pérez-Espinosa, a collaborator at INAOE, led the team who collected the dataset. Abzaliev then used the recordings to modify a machine-learning model—a type of computer algorithm that identifies patterns in large data sets. The team chose a speech representation model called Wav2Vec2, which was originally trained on human speech data.

With this model, the researchers were able to generate representations of the acoustic data collected from the dogs and interpret these representations. They found that Wav2Vec2 not only succeeded at four classification tasks; it also outperformed other models trained specifically on dog bark data, with accuracy figures up to 70%.

“This is the first time that techniques optimized for human speech have been built upon to help with the decoding of animal communication,” Mihalcea said. “Our results show that the sounds and patterns derived from human speech can serve as a foundation for analyzing and understanding the acoustic patterns of other sounds, such as animal vocalizations.”

In addition to establishing human speech models as a useful tool in analyzing animal communication—which could benefit biologists, animal behaviorists and more—this research has important implications for animal welfare. Understanding the nuances of dog vocalizations could greatly improve how humans interpret and respond to the emotional and physical needs of dogs, thereby enhancing their care and preventing potentially dangerous situations, the researchers said.
