Basic mistakes in a real estate application letter (and how to avoid them)

Key takeaways for a marketing cover letter.

When hiring managers need new real estate professionals, they look for talent that can capitalize on the good times and stay active in the downturns. Whether you sell or support those who do, you will need a real estate cover letter that builds your career momentum and land you the job of your desires.

With expert tips and resources, Resume.io is here to help you develop a real estate cover letter that will get your candidacy off the ground floor. In this cover letter guide, along with the corresponding real estate cover letter example, we’ll cover the following topics:

  • How to choose the best cover letter format and what paragraphs the cover letter should include
  • How to maximize the effect of each cover letter paragraph (header, greeting, intro, body and conclusion)
  • What approach to take when writing your cover letter
  • What mistakes to avoid when writing your marketing cover letter.

So, what will set you apart from other candidates? How do you write a convincing letter that clearly states your message and highlights your career? The guide below will analyze the details (and you can also check out our library of 125+ cover letter examples .)

The median home value is forecast to be up 14.9% with median number of days on the market down more than 20%, according to Fortune Builders . That’s great for housing specialists. In business real estate, office leasing is showing some signs of improvement, but if even a fraction of companies decide to allow employees to continue working from home, that’s a huge blow, New Geography says.

Best format for a real estate cover letter

All real estate transactions start with a standard contract containing common elements that can be adjusted to suit. Cover letters do the same. Before you get started building your letter, you should know what to include.

A real estate cover letter should contain the following elements:

  • The cover letter header
  • The greeting / salutation
  • The cover letter intro
  • The middle paragraphs (body of the letter)
  • The ending paragraph of your cover letter (conclusion and call-to-action)

So what makes a cover letter different from a real estate resume? A cover letter gives you room to express your style, tell a bit about yourself and sell! sell! sell! your candidacy. It is here that you establish a clear message and write in a style that tells hiring managers who you are.

You can find even more writing advice in our comprehensive cover letter guide.

Below you’ll find our real estate cover letter sample which can be adapted for your own experience!

Cover letter header

Staging and curb appeal make a huge difference in real estate sales. It takes a special buyer to see past a weed-filled yard or a cluttered interior to the fabulous bones of the house. Apply that same principle to your real estate cover letter. The header is the one spot where you can make a design choice that will have hiring managers wanting to open the door and step in (or read your text).

The main purpose of the header is to prominently display your name, email and phone contact information, but you can also catch a hiring manager’s attention by creating a clean design.

Remember the ATS

You may be familiar with Applicant Tracking Systems or ATS when it comes to resume writing. Don’t disregard that software in your cover letter either. Some ATS algorithms may take your cover letter text into account as well.

We don’t recommend “stuffing” your letter with keywords and phrases, but do keep them in mind as you write. You do want to target the job listing throughout your letter, so a second look at the requirements of the position will never hurt.

The aim of this section: Create a memorable first impression and make it easy for recruiters to contact you for that coveted interview.

Cover letter greeting

What do you say to new clients when you meet them or when you answer the phone to schedule appointments? Adopt that same tone in your greeting. Our cover letter samples typically begin with “Dear Mr/Mrs/Ms. Surname” because that opening treads the line of being both personal and business-like. You can’t go wrong there, so we recommend you do the same, but be careful to triple check that you have the spelling and honorific correct.

Real estate is a personal business, so do your best to address the hiring manager or your prospective boss by name. If you absolutely cannot discover the name of the person responsible for hiring, “Dear (Company Name) Hiring Team” can work well or even “Dear real estate (assessor, inspection, contract, etc.) team” if you are sure the company style is casual.

The aim of the cover letter greeting: Set a friendly tone and show you’ve gone the extra mile by addressing the hiring manager personally.

Cover letter introduction

Your introduction equates to showing off the best features of the property first. (Have you noticed the quartz countertops?) You know how to sell or to create a customer-friendly environment. Your intro should reflect your style while making a big pitch. The best cover letters are reflections of their authors and yours should be, too.

Hiring managers are looking for how you sell as well as how well you sell. Do some research on the real estate firm you want to work for. Find out the demographic it caters to, the most common types of property it sells and how it handles everything from gaining new sellers and buyers to sealing the deal. Then, craft a message that shows how you will become a fixture on the list of top salespeople or streamline office procedure.

Use positive, strong language to answer the question, “Why should I hire you?” If you can’t sell yourself, how are you going to sell that startup on some primo office space? Offer a glimpse of what’s to come in the rest of your letter to entice them to read on.

The aim of the cover letter intro: Send a message of success and a hint of what’s to come so hiring managers will read on.

Below you’ll find the introduction from our adaptable cover letter sample.

Cover letter middle part (body)

The middle part, or body, of your real estate cover letter is the house tour section. You’ve shown off the very best and now you are going to back it up with the large rooms and sunny backyard. You have a few paragraphs to get into your approach to real estate and client services. Tell a story of one particularly difficult transaction to show that you can handle the outliers.

Show you’re a well-rounded real estate professional by detailing your knowledge of regulations pertaining to your specific area. Emphasize your administrative competence. One missed deadline can ruin an otherwise smooth acquisition.

Take an appraisal of your career and choose three accomplishments to highlight in bullet items. This breaks up the paragraphs into easier to read chunks and serves to focus the hiring manager’s eye on the aspects of your job you are most proud of. Make sure these illustrate the ways in which you will fit into your prospective new role.

The aim of the body of your cover letter: Give a tour of your greatest career achievements and show how you will fit into the new company.

Here’s the body section from our real estate cover letter example.

How to close a real estate cover letter (conclusion and sign-off)

In the conclusion, it’s time to seal the deal. Again, use your sales style to review your key points. Then add one personal item that will leave the hiring manager with a question to ask during your interview. What do you love most about your job? Why do you specialize in the area you do? What convinced you to buy your house?

Answering any of these questions reveals a lot about you and how you will fit into the company you wish to work for.

Your final task here is a call to action, or a request for an interview. It’s always better to explicitly say what you want. Our cover letter sample has wording you can use, or use your own language to convey your interest.

The aim of the close of your cover letter: Remind the hiring manager of your message and ask for an interview for the position.

Here’s the conclusion from our adaptable cover letter example.

  • Get in and get out. By that we mean, keep the story short. Just as customers don’t want a 30-minute pitch, hiring managers won’t read through one either. If it’s a great anecdote, but requires explanation, save it for the interview.
  • Avoid errors of oversight. Spellcheck, grammar check and have a friend look it over. You can’t afford to make mistakes here that leave your future employer wondering if you will repeat them on the job.
  • Write naturally. Yes, you should be a bit more formal when you write than when you speak, but you don’t want to end up sounding like you just wrote a thesis for your doctorate in house hunting.

Just like the staging can make or break the sale, a great page layout can quickly leave a hiring manager wanting to know more. To avoid costly mistakes and create an attractive design, consider using a cover letter template .

  • Your key message should reflect your sales or customer service style.
  • Don’t neglect the administrative and regulatory knowledge you have gained in your career.
  • Choose anecdotes that show you understand the requirements of the job you seek.
  • Sound like yourself. You don’t want the hiring manager to wonder who is before them when you get the interview.

Dear Ms. Lewis:

My interest in SRS Real Estate Partners goes back to when I observed your intriguing collection of premier retail property portfolios throughout San Jose. I instantly realized what a rare opportunity it would be to be a commercial real estate agent at your esteemed firm.

How to Present the Right Skills in Your Real Estate Cover Letter

Salesperson pops out of computer screen to depict outselling the competition with sales cover letter

You know that presentation is key. When showing clients properties, you want to help them envision what their life will look like in each home. You should take a similar approach to your cover letter.

Start by reviewing each real estate organization’s needs in the job description . Then, tailor your cover letter to the company’s mission and skills they’re looking for, like property evaluations and client relations that’ll show how you’ll fit in with their team culture.

Capture attention with your real estate cover letter’s greeting and intro

When staging a home, the objective is to display it in a way that grabs someone’s attention the moment they walk through the front door. You can also use strategies to capture attention immediately with your real estate cover letter.

The first step is finding a hiring manager to address your cover letter by reviewing the job description and company website. It’s similar to learning names when greeting buyers at an open house. It makes their experience feel more personal.

Once you get into the opening paragraph, you’ll want to relate to the company’s mission and how your skills, like negotiation or market analysis, will fit their needs.

You should avoid sounding like you could be applying to any real estate position, as in the example below.

Try to get more specific than this!

Hello,

I’m eager to be applying for your real estate agent opening. I have five years of experience, and this looks like a great company for my skills.

Instead, write an opener like the one below that immediately relates to Halstead Real Estate’s mission of integrity and innovative property solutions.

A great opener relating to the company’s mission!

Dear Mr. Johnson,

In alignment with the sentiment that real estate is the tangible manifestation of our universal aspiration for shelter and home, I extend my interest in contributing to Halstead Real Estate’s promise of utmost integrity and innovative property solutions.

Showcase the right skills in your real estate cover letter’s body

When you get to the body of your real estate cover letter, it’s time to provide more details about how your skills and experiences make you the right candidate for each company’s needs.

Ideally, choose examples that align with the job description . For instance, a real estate firm looking to increase its online presence may appreciate agents who are well-versed in social media marketing and optimizing online property listings.

You should also include some essential real estate metrics in your example, like listing-to-meeting ratios, homes sold, and average commission per sale.

A well-structured body paragraph full of essential metrics!

cover letter for real estate application

Solidify your abilities with the closing and sign off of your real estate cover letter

The closing of your real estate cover letter is similar to how you’d end a property showing with a client. You’d want to wrap things up by reviewing key features that make a property special. You should do the same with your top skills and how you fit in with the company’s mission.

It’s also good practice to say thank you and use a light call to action, like “I look forward to discussing this opportunity with you further.” It helps reinforce your interest, just like you would when meeting with a prospective client who is considering selling their home through your real estate firm.

The example below is a good start but could use some work since the applicant doesn’t relate back to any specific needs or the mission of the real estate firm.

Needs more details!

I believe my skills fit in well with your firm’s needs, and I would be eager to join your team. I look forward to hearing from you soon to discuss this real estate agent position in more detail.

John Ramos

A better option is the closer below that shows exactly how the client fits in with Dream Town Realty’s broker team and people-first mission.

A great closer that connects with the company’s mission!

At times, you may review the job description , real estate firm’s website, and social media profiles like LinkedIn and still not find the name of a hiring manager. In those instances, you can simply lead with “Dear [name of company] hiring team.” Just be sure to follow with a highly specific opening paragraph that shows your passion for the company and how your skills, like prospecting and negotiation, fit in with their mission.

When working with clients, you probably try to speak in a tone they’ll relate to well as you explain the specifics of each property. You can use the same strategy in your cover letter by reviewing the job description and trying to match each real estate firm’s tone as best as possible.

You should keep your real estate cover letter on a single page. It’ll help provide a concise overview of your abilities, like lead generation and property staging, without overwhelming hiring managers with too many details when they quickly review applicants.

A great real estate agent cover letter usually has five sections, outlined below. When possible, connect each section back to your sales, marketing, and other pertinent skills. The following advice and examples show what to include in your cover letter so it’s optimized for each job application.

At the top of the page, include your resume contact header, the date, and any basic details you have about your recipient (as in the example below). To set a clear focus, add the title “Real Estate Agent” to your contact header. You can then modify your title to align with each job posting. For instance, use the title “Commercial Real Estate Agent” if that’s closer to the role in question and still true to your experience.

(Note: Feel free to omit this section if you send your letter by email and your contact details are part of your signature.)

2. Salutation

Whenever you can, address your recipient by name – it’s the quickest way to signal you’re sending a job-specific letter and not a boilerplate. If you can’t find the recipient’s name, use a variation of “Dear Hiring Manager” so your greeting is still tailored somewhat to each real estate firm.

Dear Carpenter Realtors Talent Specialist:

3. “Hook” or introduction

Catch the reader’s attention by starting your letter with a clear example of your impact as a real estate agent. Choose a highlight that demonstrates your talent for engaging with buyers and sellers, as well as your skill at handling the many parts of a home sale.

4. Body paragraph(s)

Use the main section of your letter to tell why this real estate job or employer suits you. For instance, you could share the company’s focus on creative property marketing. Or maybe the job posting describes a dynamic work culture similar to your recent experience.

Following this explanation, cite a few more of your main skills or achievements , possibly as bullet points. In the real estate agent cover letter sample below, see how the applicant uses bullets to cover relevant duty areas like client education and property descriptions.

5. Call to action

Finally, request an interview for the position. Consider briefly restating your ability to manage successful home sales or transactions. To end your cover letter, use a simple closing like “Sincerely” or “Best regards” and then your name.

Real Estate Agent Cover Letter Tips

1. quantify your success.

With performance data like sales rankings or client referral rates, you can make your cover letter more specific and compelling to employers. In the example below, see how the candidate’s citing 35% growth makes a stronger impression than if he’d used a general phrase like “Boosting my client roster by a large amount…”

2. Highlight your skills and market knowledge

As part of your letter’s body text, add a short list of bullet points showing your success in key real estate agent work areas, like home staging, revenue growth, or client communications. Also, consider citing your knowledge of market factors and how you’ve used that insight to deliver value to home buyers or sellers.

3. Keep it concise

Limit your cover letter to one page, or around 250 words. Resist the urge to tell your whole career story, even if you have extensive background in real estate. Give just enough detail to pique hiring managers’ interest so they take a closer look at your resume.

Real Estate Agent Cover Letter Frequently Asked Questions

How can i make my cover letter introduction stand out -.

When possible, network. Start your letter by citing any connections you have with your recipient. If someone at the company alerted you to the job, use a line like "I was excited to hear from your colleague [Name] about [Company]'s new real estate agent position." Or, if you've already met your recipient, mention that with a line like "It was great speaking with you at the [event] last month."

How should I format my cover letter? -

Like your resume. Carry over that document’s basic format settings , such as font style, line spacing, and page margins.

Are cover letters becoming obsolete? -

No. As long as hiring managers want to know why you want the job and don’t have time to get your (initial) answer by interview, the cover letter will stay a key part of the job search.

Real Estate Cover Letter Example & How-To (2023 Guide)

cover letter for real estate application

Written by James Vandersmith

April 20, 2023.

Writing a real estate cover letter can be intimidating, especially when you’re unsure of what to include. A good cover letter should provide a clear snapshot of your skills and experience, demonstrate your enthusiasm for the role, and leave the hiring manager wanting to learn more about you.

Real Estate Cover Letter Example

Captivating Real Estate Cover Letter Header & Title.

Start your cover letter with a strong header and title. You want to make sure the hiring manager knows who you are and why you’re writing to them, so provide your full name, email address, phone number, and any other contact information as part of the header. The title should be something along the lines of “Real Estate Cover Letter” or “Application for Real Estate Agent Position.” This will help the hiring manager quickly identify that it is related to the real estate job they’re looking to fill.

Show Your Most Compelling Credentials and Relevant Experience in your Real Estate Cover Letter.

The body of your cover letter should emphasize the most relevant experience and credentials that make you a strong candidate for the role. If you have prior real estate experience, highlight that first. Or if you don’t have any direct real estate experience, focus on any job-related skills or qualifications that could be transferable to a real estate agent position. Demonstrate why you are uniquely qualified and why this job is right for you.

The best way to start a Real Estate Agent cover letter is by grabbing the reader's attention with a strong opening line. This could be a brief statement about your passion for real estate, your proven track record in sales, or a unique skill you bring to the table. For example, "As a seasoned real estate agent with a 90% closing rate, I am excited about the opportunity to bring my sales skills and passion for helping clients find their dream homes to your team." This not only shows your enthusiasm for the job but also highlights your qualifications right from the start.

Real estate agents should end a cover letter by summarizing their key skills and experiences that make them a suitable candidate for the role. They should express enthusiasm for the opportunity and a desire to bring their unique skills to the position. The closing should be professional and courteous, thanking the reader for their time and consideration. For example: "I am excited about the opportunity to bring my unique blend of skills and experience to your team and am confident that I can contribute to your continued success. A Real Estate Agent's cover letter should ideally be about one page in length. This is because hiring managers often have many applications to go through, so a concise, one-page cover letter ensures your key points are easily digestible and don't get lost in a sea of text. In terms of word count, aim for around 250 to 400 words. This length is enough to introduce yourself, explain why you're interested in the position, highlight your relevant skills and experiences, and conclude with a call to action. Therefore, it's important to keep it brief, engaging, and focused on your qualifications as they relate to the real estate industry.

Writing a cover letter with no experience as a Real Estate Agent can seem daunting, but it's important to remember that everyone starts somewhere. Here are some steps to guide you: 1. Start with a Professional Greeting: Address the hiring manager by name if possible. If not, use a professional greeting such as "Dear Hiring Manager." 2. Introduction: Begin your cover letter by introducing yourself and stating the position you're applying for. Mention where you found the job posting and if you were referred by someone. 3. Highlight Relevant Skills: Even if you don't have direct experience as a real estate agent, you likely have skills that are relevant to the job. This could be anything from sales experience, customer service skills, or even being a quick learner. Highlight these skills and explain how they would make you a good fit for the role. 4. Show Enthusiasm for the Industry: Show that you're passionate about real estate. This could be through personal experiences (like buying or selling your own home), or through your education if you've taken relevant courses. 5. Provide Examples: Use specific examples to demonstrate your skills and enthusiasm. For example, if you have sales experience, talk about a time when you exceeded your sales targets. 6. Show You've Done Your Research: Demonstrate that you've researched the company and understand its values and mission. Explain why you want to work for them specifically. 7. Close Professionally: Thank the hiring manager for considering your application. Express your eagerness to further discuss your qualifications in an interview. 8. Proofread: Make sure your cover letter is free of errors. This shows that you pay attention to detail, which is a crucial skill for a real estate agent. Remember, the goal of a cover letter is to show why you would be a good fit for the role and the company. Even without direct experience, you can still make a strong case for why you should be considered.

  • Leadership Abilities: Mentioning the role of leading a team showcases the applicant's leadership skills, an essential attribute for senior positions, indicating the candidate's ability to manage and drive a team towards success.
  • Market Knowledge: Emphasizing an understanding of market dynamics and client needs – especially within a specific geographical area (Washington, D.C.) – suggests that the candidate possesses critical local market insights, which is a valuable attribute in the real estate industry.
  • Intent to Deliver Value: The applicant expresses a desire to apply their skills to create growth for the company, demonstrating a forward-thinking approach and an eagerness to contribute positively to the prospective employer's success.

What are the basics of the design or format of your real estate sales cover letter?

To start, here's a reminder for you: the Applicant Tracker System (or software that is used to assess candidate profiles), won't be reading your real estate sales cover letter.

Recruiters enjoy reading real estate sales cover letters with a standardized format that uses:

  • the same font as the resume (e.g. modern ones like Raleway or Volkhov are prefered over the clichéd Times New Roman or Arial);
  • single spacing to keep the content concise and organized (this is all ready for you in our cover letter templates );
  • a one-inch margin to wrap around the text, like in our cover letter builder ;
  • PDF as a file format, as it allows your design (and visual element) to stay the same.

Finally, we can't go on without mentioning the key sections of your real estate sales cover letter.

In the top one-third, make sure to include a header (with your contact information, name, role, and date), a salutation, and an introduction.

Next, follows the heart and soul of your real estate sales cover letter or its body.

End your real estate sales cover letter with a closing paragraph and, if you wish, a signature.

The top sections on a real estate sales cover letter

  • Header: This includes your contact information and the date, providing the recruiter with immediate reference for reaching out to you and aligning with professional correspondence practices.
  • Opening Salutation: Tailor this to the hiring manager if possible, which demonstrates your attention to detail and personal investment in applying for the sales position.
  • Introduction: Briefly articulate your interest in the real estate sales position and mention any referral or connection, as relationships are crucial in the real estate industry.
  • Body: In one or two paragraphs, highlight your sales achievements, familiarity with the real estate market, and any relevant certifications or education, underscoring your capability to perform in the sales role.
  • Closing: Reiterate your enthusiasm for the role, include a call to action encouraging the recruiter to contact you, and thank them for considering your application, reflecting good manners and salesmanship.

Key qualities recruiters search for in a candidate’s cover letter

  • Strong negotiation skills: Essential for closing deals and ensuring the best terms for clients.
  • In-depth knowledge of local property markets: Critical for advising clients and pricing properties accurately.
  • Excellent networking abilities: Key to finding buyers, sellers, and connecting with industry professionals.
  • Proven sales track record: Demonstrates ability to successfully sell properties and meet targets.
  • Superior communication and interpersonal skills: Necessary for building rapport with clients and guiding them through complex transactions.
  • Attention to detail: Important for preparing accurate property listings, contracts, and other necessary documentation.

How to greet recruiters in your real estate sales cover letter salutation

As the saying goes, "You never get a second chance to make a first impression."

Write your real estate sales cover letter salutation to be more personalized to the actual hiring manager, who is set to assess your profile by:

  • greeting them on a first-name basis, if you have previously communicated with them (e.g. "Dear Sam,");
  • using their last name, if you have more formal communication or haven't spoken to them (e.g. "Dear Mr. Harrows" or "Dear Ms. Marshall");
  • writing "Dear HR Team" or "Dear Hiring Manager", if you have no clue about who's recruiting for the role.

Search on LinkedIn, Google, or the company website to find information as to the recruiter's name.

In any case, avoid the impersonal "Dear Sir or Madam".

List of salutations you can use

  • Dear Hiring Manager,
  • Dear [Company Name] Team,
  • Dear [Hiring Manager's Name],
  • Dear [Department] Department,
  • Dear [Mr./Ms. Last Name],
  • Dear Search Committee,

Get creative with your real estate sales cover letter introduction

Recruiters are going to assess plenty of candidate profiles for the role. Thus, anything you do to stand out will win you brownie points.

Use your real estate sales cover letter introduction to share something memorable about your experience .

But before you go down the rabbit hole of creativity and humor, align your message with the company culture.

For example, if you are applying for a role in some startup, use those first two sentences to tell a funny story (about your experience) to quickly connect with the recruiter.

That one achievement in your real estate sales cover letter body

The lengthiest part of your real estate sales cover letter is the body.

Within the next three to six middle paragraphs, present yourself as the best candidate for the role .

How can you do that without retelling your whole professional resume?

Select one key achievement that covers job-crucial skills and technologies (and is memorable).

Within the body of your real estate sales cover letter, aim to tell the story of how you achieved your success. Also, write about how this would help out your potential team.

Closing remarks to end your real estate sales cover letter

Of course, you'll have to show gratitude to the recruiters, who have assessed your profile at the end of your real estate sales cover letter .

A "Thank you for the consideration" would work wonders, instead of the standard "Sincerely yours".

Do you want to make an even better impression?

Close off your real estate sales cover letter by promising how you see yourself excelling in the role and the positive impact you'd bring about.

A sentence that encourages some further action on the recruiter's end could also be a good way to close off the communication (e.g. provide your availability for an interview).

Keep this in mind when writing your zero experience real estate sales cover letter

Even though you may not have any professional experience , your real estate sales cover letter should focus on your value.

As a candidate for the particular role, what sort of skills do you bring about? Perhaps you're an apt leader and communicator, or have the ability to analyze situations from different perspectives.

Select one key achievement from your life, outside work, and narrate a story that sells your abilities in the best light.

If you really can't think of any relevant success, you could also paint the picture of how you see your professional future developing in the next five years, as part of the company.

Key takeaways

Winning recruiters over shouldn't be difficult if you use your real estate sales cover letter to tell a story that:

  • Is personalized by greeting your readers and focusing on key job skills greets;
  • Isn't spread all over the place, but instead focuses on one key achievement and selling your value as a professional;
  • Introduces your enthusiasm for the role, passion for the job, or creativity in communication;
  • Is also visually appealing - meeting the best HR practices;
  • Ends with a nod to the future and how you envision your growth, as part of the company.

Thanks to these cookies, we can count visits and traffic sources to our pages. This allows us to measure and improve the performance of our website and provide you with content you’ll find interesting.

Performance cookies let us see which pages are the most and least popular, and how you and other visitors move around the site.

All information these cookies collect is aggregated (it’s a statistic) and therefore completely anonymous. If you don’t let us use these cookies, you’ll leave us in the dark a bit, as we won’t be able to give you the content you may like.

We use these cookies to uniquely identify your browser and internet device. Thanks to them, we and our partners can build a profile of your interests, and target you with discounts to our service and specialized content.

On the other hand, these cookies allow some companies target you with advertising on other sites. This is to provide you with advertising that you might find interesting, rather than with a series of irrelevant ads you don’t care about.
