10 things to consider before applying for admission at LUMS

LUMS

LUMS is an institute that attracts students from all over the country and abroad. Quality education, high employability, world-class faculty, and extraordinary facilities have made it the most wanted institute by students. Despite the expensive education, admission to LUMS is not easy. In fact, it has one of the toughest admission criteria in Pakistan with a lot of requirements and a high academic record. However, if you follow proper guidelines and are successful in fulfilling the criteria, you can easily secure admission. Here are a few things that are the most important to consider before applying for admission at LUMS.

Admission takes place like at an international university

If you have applied to an international university, you will understand what is the process. Explaining it briefly, you have to submit the application electronically by making a student account for it. The documents and all other requirements have to be fulfilled and submitted through it. So, go to the website and check the section on how to apply to start your process.

Admissions take place once a year only during the fall semester

Admissions at LUMS do not take place twice as most people expect. It only admits students to the fall semester every year. If you are planning to apply, keep your preparation complete before the applications open in the fall.

You cannot apply if your grades are lesser than the requirement

Unlike many private universities in Pakistan, you have to meet certain academic criteria to be able to apply at LUMS. Generally, it requires seventy percent marks in matric and the same in intermediate exams. Moreover, if you are an O levels student, you have to acquire an average grade point of B in at least 8 subjects.

SAT is compulsory to apply for admission

You have to appear in SAT exam and achieve a good score in order to secure your admission at LUMS. To have the maximum chance of admission, a score of around 1400 out of 1600 is good enough. However, you might get admission at around 1300 score if you have an exceptional academic record, in rare cases. If you are applying at the Law school, you have to give LAT along with SAT.

You need teacher evaluations or reference letters

Just like international admissions, you need to get authentic reference letters from your teachers as a necessary document to apply at LUMS. These recommendations have a huge influence on the admission decision.

The personal statement is the most powerful document

The personal statement is the most important document to apply for admission. It can change the decision in your favor if it is exceptionally good despite average academic and SAT scores and against you if it is not that good despite the extraordinary academic score. Check out this link to know about how can you prepare your personal statement.

There is an application processing fee

It is important to know that the admission application has a processing fee. This fee is nonrefundable and will not be returned even in the case you are not awarded a position.

Merit Scholarship based on SAT and academic excellence are available

LUMS also offers financial assistance to its students. One of the scholarships is awarded on the basis of SAT and academic scores. It offers 100 merit scholarships both partial and full-funded. Students are automatically selected for these merit awards without having to fill out a separate application form. Get more information about this scholarship here .

Need-based scholarships

Through the National Outreach Program (NOP), LUMS also offers need-based scholarships to students. This program also has academic criteria and is not entirely based on financial status. Well, it is highly facilitative. You can check out further details of this scholarship here .

Additional tips

If you want to make your application stronger and enhance your chances of acceptance, you have to make your profile stronger. It can be done through your past experience of working somewhere. It can be anything like writing, doing an internship, or volunteering somewhere. Welfare work can also be a strong point in your profile and you get a lot of opportunities to do it. Some other things that can strengthen your case are co-curricular activities, some awards, participation at tournaments, etc. Moreover, you can get some online courses. There are plenty of them offered both at the national and international levels.

If you are serious about making a position at LUMS, you must start well before the deadline. Start your homework from today. Add to your credentials, get some experience, and enhance your skills in writing. Good luck!

Inside the Harvard of Pakistan: Guide to LUMS 2024

by Rayan Khan

Blog Image

Popularly known as the Harvard of Pakistan, owing to its world-class faculty and rigorous programs (and the occasional viral video on social media 🥺), LUMS stands tall as the most coveted university in Pakistan. Ask anyone, and they’ve probably heard of LUMS.

However gaining  admission to LUMS is fiercely competitive, with approximately a hundred thousand applicants vying for a seat each year. In this article, we break down the complex application process into bite-sized topics, providing additional exclusive insider insights to ease your admissions journey.

LET’S DIVE RIGHT IN! 🥳

Admissions Process:

LUMS accepts admissions only through the  LUMS Online Application Account . Once you register, the admission process is segmented into four broad steps:

LUMS Online Application Form Submission:

The online application has multiple steps and will ask you for your personal information ranging from O and A Level grades (or Matric and FSc marks) to have you craft a Personal Statement to gauge if LUMS and you are a good fit for each other. If you run into any trouble or have any questions, feel free to utilise the in-portal  “Ask Admissions” feature or  email the Admissions Office which typically responds within 2 working days.

Online submission of scanned copies of required documents:

This step includes uploading your CAIE Certificates, certificates of extra-curricular activities and awards that you mentioned in the first step. The complete list can be found  here .

Submission of Application Processing Fee:

After the completion of your application, a fee voucher will be generated, which has to be paid within the stipulated deadline   for your admission to be considered.

Online submission of Teachers’ Evaluation(s)/ Letter of Recommendation(s):

LUMS strives to understand the aptitude and personality of every applicant in a holistic manner and thus requires Recommendation Letter (s) to be written by your teacher/ mentor etc. An email is sent to the referee (the person who’s recommending you) with the deadline for the submission approximately 15-20 days after the application deadline.

While these letters should ideally showcase your strengths and abilities, they are meant to offer meaningful insights into an applicant’s life by those who know the applicant well. Hence, it is best not to go for that famous teacher who barely knows you but look instead for a teacher who’s worked with you closely and can vouch for your abilities.

Out-Class helps you get success in entry test exams such as SAT, FUNGAT and ECAT. This blog includes how to get into LUMS

Entry Test:

In case you haven’t taken the SAT at the time of the application or would like to apply on the basis of an improved test score, you can take the  LCAT (LUMS Common Admission Test) which is designed and conducted by LUMS. Very similar to the SAT, LCAT assesses reading, writing, and math capabilities (in a slightly easier way). You can register for the LCAT through the   LUMS Online Application Account.

Admissions Requirements:

In order to be eligible for admission into LUMS, you have to have an average of at least 2Bs and 1C  in your A Levels, with no grade being less than E. For students from the FSc/FA route, at least 65% in FA or 70% in FSc/ICOM/ICS is needed for consideration of your application.

Fee Structure:

Although LUMS chooses not to share its fee structure publicly, we have calculated an annual estimate based on the  22% hike that is set to kick in from Fall 2023 and taking an average of the required Credit Hours per semester. You can view the annual fee and much more  here.

Programs/Majors:

At LUMS, you'll find 4 schools   ( business, engineering, social sciences, and law ) offering  19 undergraduate programmes. Upon acceptance into either one of these schools (you get two preferences only), you'll have 1 or 2 foundational years to select your degree program/major from the school. Competitive majors (like Econ-Math) have limited seats, so meeting the GPA criteria is essential. You can access the complete list  here .

*IMPORTANT CONSIDERATION WHILE APPLYING:

Unfortunately, many students have the misconception that they could accept the offer for another school at the time of admission and simply transfer later.

Keep in mind that inter-school (for e.g from the humanities school to the business school) transfers are uncommon and extremely difficult to get. Apart from the limited applications processed and the GPA cut-offs, you’ll have to work extra hard from the get-go to meet other requirements before the deadline.

Concluding Remarks:

CONGRATULATIONS! You're now equipped with essential insights to navigate the LUMS application process with confidence. From fulfilling admission requirements to selecting your dream major, this article has you covered. Best of luck on your journey to LUMS! 🙌🏼

If a student is not shortlisted or is unable to clear the Summer Coaching Session then that particular student can still apply to LUMS for admission and can avail this scholarship through the regular admission process. For that they would need to fill out the online Undergraduate Admission and Financial Aid Application. If he/ she clears the Admission Testing requirements and merit criteria and is granted admission to LUMS, then his/ her case will be reviewed by the Financial Aid Committee. We admit students purely on the basis of merit through a very transparent and competitive process. The objective of this whole NOP Programme is to guide and mentor those who are talented and cannot afford the high cost of studying at LUMS. This will help them for applying to LUMS Programmes and meeting our admission standards.

We have been conducting this session for many years at the LUMS Campus which is located in Defense Housing Authority (DHA) Cantt, Lahore.

The Summer Coaching Session is arranged during the summers; in July and August when intermediate students are on vacation after their first year exams.

If a student fails to attend the Summer Coaching Session, his/ her admission application will not be processed through National Outreach Programme Stream. But he will have the option to apply through Regular Admissions & Financial Aid Stream.

All of the participants are shortlisted on the basis of their performance in the Summer Coaching Session. Student's performance is evaluated on factors such as class participation, performances in the tests as well as quizzes, conduct in the class, punctuality, discipline etc. All classes during the Summer Coaching Session are mandatory for the participating students.

All You Need to Know About LCAT LUMS Common Admission Test

LUMS Common Admission Test Guide

LCAT LUMS Common Admission Test : The LUMS General test for admission to any undergraduate degree is called the LUMS Common Admission Test (LCAT).

For admission to any of its schools—Suleman Dawood School of Business, Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering, Mushtaq Ahmad Gurmani School of Social Sciences, and Shaikh Ahmad Hassan School of Law—LCAT is an alternative to the SAT-1 but is not required.

LUMS has its own test, just like IBA, NUST, etc. Following the COVID Pandemic and the cancellation of many SAT tests that year, this test was canceled in 2013 and reintroduced in 2021.

The LCAT helps students because it gives them more opportunities to raise their scores.

The LCAT is a three-hour exam that mainly consists of multiple-choice questions and gauges a person’s verbal and mathematical reasoning skills.

What should I study for LCAT?

LCAT a multiple-choice test gauges fundamental verbal and mathematical skills. Math and English are the two main topics covered on the test.

Two timed sections for math and two for English make up the four sections of the exam. When a section’s allotted time has passed, the student must proceed to the following one. The test will last three hours leaving out the essay portion. The exam will be administered in person. There is no negative marking.

Is LCAT the same as SAT?

When applying to LUMS, the LCAT (LUMS Common Admission Test) takes the place of the SAT. Tests like the SAT, LCAT, and ACT are acceptable for a variety of LUMS programs. You can also watch the provided video about LUMS admissions.

The math on the LCAT is much more difficult than on the SAT I. Sometimes they ask questions from FSC and A-Level Math. On the other hand, English is easier than SAT I in comparison.

What does LCAT stand for in Pakistan?

In Pakistan, LCAT stands for LUMS Common Admission Test. All candidates (with the exception of those residing abroad) applying to the Suleman Dawood School of Business (SDSB) or the School of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Law (SHSSL) must take the LUMS Common Admission Test (LCAT).

What are the passing marks for LCAT?

LCAT being an aptitude test consists of two parts. Applicants having diplomas can apply if they have scored a minimum of 70% or above marks. They must, however, provide an equivalent certificate issued by the IBCC, Pakistan

Is LCAT compulsory for LUMS?

LCAT is an alternative to SAT-1 for admission to any of its schools, including Suleman Dawood School of Business, Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering, Mushtaq Ahmad Gurmani School of Social Sciences, and Shaikh Ahmad Hassan School of Law. LCAT is optional, not required, but it is a better option.

How many questions are on the LCAT?

The LCAT has seven (7) sections, all of which are required to pass.

  • a) Each of the first two sections—a Verbal and a Math section—takes 30 minutes.
  • b) The remaining five sections are each 25 minutes long, consisting of two Verbal sections, two Math sections, and either a Verbal or Math section for the final 25-minute section.

The LCAT is a multiple-choice test with questions that are comparable to those on the SAT I. It assesses reading, writing, and math abilities, just like the SAT I. There is NO essay section on the LCAT.

Where is LCAT conducted?

LCAT is conducted in the designated cities of Pakistan simultaneously.

Sat / act prep online guides and tips, which colleges require the sat essay complete list.

body_satkeyboard.png

Planning to take the SAT? Before you sign up, you need to decide whether you're going to take the test with or without the optional Essay . How should you pick? Well, some colleges require that you apply with the SAT with Essay; others don't care whether you submit an SAT score with or without the Essay.

In this article, I'll provide you with a complete list of colleges that require or recommend taking the SAT with the Essay .

UPDATE: SAT Essay No Longer Offered

In January 2021, the College Board announced that after June 2021, it would no longer offer the Essay portion of the SAT (except at schools who opt in during School Day Testing). It is now no longer possible to take the SAT Essay, unless your school is one of the small number who choose to offer it during SAT School Day Testing.

While most colleges had already made SAT Essay scores optional, this move by the College Board means no colleges now require the SAT Essay. It will also likely lead to additional college application changes such not looking at essay scores at all for the SAT or ACT, as well as potentially requiring additional writing samples for placement.

What does the end of the SAT Essay mean for your college applications? Check out our article on the College Board's SAT Essay decision for everything you need to know.

What Is the Optional SAT Essay?

The redesigned SAT debuted in March 2016 with a now-optional Essay section. For the Essay, you have 50 minutes to read a passage (similar to those you see on the Reading section ) and write an essay dissecting how the author made the argument . Did the author use evidence to support the main claim? Appeals to emotion? Specific word choice?

If you take the SAT without Essay, the test length is three hours . However, if you take the SAT with Essay, the optional Essay adds 50 minutes . It also costs more to take the SAT with Essay : $64.50 vs $49.50 without the Essay.

Don't automatically assume you must take the Essay. Whether it's important for you depends on which schools (and scholarships) you're applying to and what the rest of your application looks like. I'll go into more depth later about how to decide which version of the SAT to take.

List of Schools That Require the SAT With Essay

Below, I've compiled a list of colleges that require or recommend taking the SAT with Essay. All data comes from the College Board and some individual schools we consulted separately.

Note: This list is subject to change, so make sure to double-check with each school you're applying to.

Surprisingly (and in contrast to how it's been in the past), top schools mostly do not require the SAT essay . Currently, no Ivy League School requires students to take the SAT with Essay; the same is true for Stanford, Caltech, Duke, Georgetown, Johns Hopkins, MIT, Northwestern, NYU, and UChicago. Many of these schools no longer even recommend students to take the SAT with Essay, which is a huge turnaround from just a couple of years ago.

Similarly, most liberal arts colleges do not require or recommend the SAT with Essay ; however, there are some exceptions, such as Soka University, which does require it.

In general, most state schools also do not require the SAT with Essay, though there's still a significant portion that do. There tends to be some weird variance even within states. For example, all University of California schools require the SAT with Essay, but most of the California State University schools do not.

Regardless of the types of schools you're applying to, don't assume that they all ask for the SAT with Essay . Check with every school to make sure you understand their testing requirements.

How to Decide Whether to Take the SAT Essay: 4 Questions

When making your decision about whether to take the SAT with Essay or the SAT without Essay, you'll need to consider the following four questions.

#1: Do Any Schools I Want to Apply to Require the SAT Essay?

If you're applying to any school that requires the Essay, then you must take the SAT with Essay . If you take the SAT without Essay, your application will be incomplete and you won't get admitted. By contrast, if you apply to any schools that don't require the SAT Essay, you can still take the SAT with Essay since these schools will accept both types of SAT scores (with or without Essay).

To reiterate, colleges that require the SAT Essay won't consider your score if you took the SAT without the Essay . The last thing you want to do is take the SAT without the Essay and get a good score—but then find out that one of your target schools requires you to take the SAT with Essay.

Remember that some colleges change their application policies from year to year, so make sure to double-check the testing policies of the schools you're applying to .

#2: Do Any Schools I Want to Apply to Recommend the SAT Essay?

If you're not applying to any schools that require the SAT Essay section but are applying to some that recommend it, then I'd still suggest taking it . This gives you another dimension schools can use to evaluate your application; however, there are some cases in which you shouldn't take the SAT with Essay.

If, for some reason, you do not qualify for SAT fee waivers and paying the extra cost to take the SAT with Essay would be a financial burden to you , then please don't feel as if you have to take it. In this case, it's fine to take the SAT without Essay instead.

In addition, if you really struggle to write essays under time constraints (due to anxiety), you might want to opt out of the Essay . That said, I only recommend this for students who normally have strong English and writing skills but struggle to write coherent essays when there's the added pressure of a time constraint.

For example, do you get As on essays you can work on at home but Cs on in-class essays because you get easily nervous? If that's the case, taking the SAT with Essay might not be a good idea.

#3: Am I Applying to Any Scholarships That Require an SAT With Essay Score?

Many scholarships (such as National Merit ) require you to submit SAT scores , and some specifically want SAT with Essay scores.

Therefore, be sure to check the requirements of each scholarship you're planning on applying for . While scholarships that don't require or recommend the SAT Essay should still accept your SAT with Essay score, scholarships that require the Essay section will not consider your SAT score if you took the no-essay version .

#4: Will the SAT Essay Enhance My Application in Other Ways?

Generally speaking, taking the SAT Essay if it's not required won't add a lot to your application. In truth, colleges that don't recommend or require the Essay really don't pay much attention to it.

Nevertheless, the Essay might be helpful for international students who want to prove they have strong English skills and who think they'll do especially well on it. If you fall into this category and feel confident you'll get a high score on it ( after doing practice essays , for example), definitely consider taking the SAT with Essay.

On the other hand, if you don't think you'll do well on the Essay, I recommend against taking it.
