Movie Biopics on the Way: Timothée Chalamet as Bob Dylan, Sebastian Stan as Donald Trump, Selena Gomez as Linda Ronstadt and More
The biographical drama, or biopic as it is widely known, is often a staple of the movie release calendar. Paramount Pictures already has one of the year’s big hits thanks to its Bob Marley biopic “One Love,” featuring Kingsley Ben-Adir as the reggae music icon, which has earned more than $170 million at the worldwide box office. And that’s not the only biopic that has already opened in 2024: “Shirley,” starring Regina King as Shirley Chisholm, is now streaming on Netflix, and Angel Studios was behind the eponymous biopic about Catholic missionary Francesca Cabrini, which is nearing $20 million worldwide.
Of course, one of the biggest movies of last year was Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer.” The Robert Oppenheimer drama earned nearly $1 billion at the worldwide box office and won the Oscar for best picture, although Nolan himself would not call it a biopic . The genre can be a box office goldmine, and it can also be an awards season juggernaut. Just look at some of the recent best actor Oscar winners: Cillian Murphy for “Oppenheimer,” Will Smith for “King Richard,” Rami Malek for “Bohemian Rhapsody,” Gary Oldman for “Darkest Hour.” All of these movies were biopics.
The biopic genre isn’t slowing down anytime soon either. Timothée Chalamet has been making headlines left and right as set photos come in from the filming of “A Complete Unknown,” the Bob Dylan biopic being directed by “Walk the Line” helmer James Mangold. See the list below for a complete rundown of the most high-profile biopic movies on the way.
Timothée Chalamet as Bob Dylan
Timothée Chalamet is traveling back to the early 1960s to portray Bob Dylan in James Mangold’s “A Complete Unknown,” which will chronicle the music legend’s arrival to New York from Minnesota and his emergence in and disruption of the Greenwich Village folk scene. Photos of Chalamet draped in ’60s garb during the production of the movie have gone viral online , despite the release date for the Dylan film remaining a complete unknown. What is known is many of the supporting cast members, including Monica Barbaro as Joan Baez, Elle Fanning as Sylvie Russo, Edward Norton as Pete Seeger, Boyd Holbrook as Johnny Cash and Nick Offerman as Alan Lomax. Dylan himself is also apparently involved behind the scenes, as Mangold revealed he personally annotated the script and has been supportive of the film.
Jeremy Allen White as Bruce Springsteen
While no deals are set in stone yet, “The Bear” star Jeremy Allen White is in talks to play Bruce Springsteen in a movie about the making of “Nebraska,” the stripped-down 1982 album that marked a new artistic direction for the Boss. Springsteen recorded “Nebraska” on four-track cassette in his New Jersey bedroom a few years before he and the E Street Band would release the landmark “Born in the U.S.A.” The film is based on (and shares a title with) Warren Zanes’ 2023 book “Deliver Me From Nowhere,” and it hails from producers Eric Robinson and Ellen Goldsmith-Vein of the Gotham Group. A24 is also in talks to board the project, and Scott Stuber, in his first major film project since leaving his post as head of film at Netflix, has joined as a producer.
Selena Gomez as Linda Ronstadt
Selena Gomez is set to portray Linda Ronstadt in a biopic directed by David O. Russell . The music movie is currently in pre-production, with producers including James Keach, who produced the 2019 documentary “Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice,” and Ronstadt’s manager, John Boylan. Gomez, whose acting credits include “Wizards of Waverly Place” and “Only Murders in the Building,” teased the role on Instagram by posting a photo of the country-rock legend and 11-time Grammy winner’s 2013 memoir “Simple Dreams.” No other casting has been announced.
Four Beatles Biopics Directed by Sam Mendes
Sam Mendes has embarked on the long and winding road to telling the epic story of the Beatles — in four separate biopics set for release in 2027. Each movie will be told from a different Beatle’s point of view, but it’s unclear in which order the Paul, John, George and Ringo films will be released. The movies, from Sony Pictures and the Oscar-nominated director of “American Beauty” and “1917,” will intersect to “tell the astonishing story of the greatest band in history.” Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr and the families of the late John Lennon and George Harrison have granted full life story and music rights for the scripted films, so we can expect a soundtrack of the band’s greatest songs. No casting has been announced, but Variety has a few ideas for who should portray the Fab Four.
Sebastian Stan as Donald Trump
Sebastian Stan is playing young Donald Trump in a movie titled “The Apprentice” from Iranian filmmaker Ali Abbasi (“Holy Spider”). The cast also includes “Succession” Emmy winner Jeremy Strong as Roy Cohn and “Borat 2” and “Bodies Bodies Bodies” actor Maria Bakalova as Ivana Trump. According to the logline, the film is “an exploration of power and ambition set in a world of corruption and deceit. It’s a mentor-protege story that charts the origins of an American dynasty. Filled with larger than life characters, it reveals the moral and human cost of a culture defined by winners and losers.”
Pauly Shore as Richard Simmons
After playing Richard Simmons in an unrelated Sundance short film titled “The Court Jester,” Pauly Shore will reprise the role of the fitness icon in a feature-length biopic from Warner Bros. subsidiary The Wolper Organization. Just hours after the film was announced, the reclusive Simmons disavowed the project on Facebook , writing, “I have never given my permission for this movie. So don’t believe everything you read.” Still, the team behind the movie insists, “We respect his desire to privacy and plan to produce a movie that honors him, celebrates him and tells a dramatic story.” Additional casting for the movie is underway.
Jaafar Jackson as Michael Jackson
Jaafar Jackson is portraying his uncle Michael Jackson in Lionsgate‘s upcoming biopic “Michael,” directed by Antoine Fuqua. The biopic is expected to depict the complicated legacy of the man who became known as the King of Pop. According to the studio, the film will explore all aspects of his life, “including his most iconic performances that led him to become the greatest entertainer of all time.” The film is being made with the cooperation of the Michael Jackson estate. The supporting cast includes Colman Domingo as Joe Jackson, Nia Long as Katherine Jackson, Miles Teller as John Branca and Kat Graham as Diana Ross, among others.
Elon Musk Biopic Directed by Darren Aronofsky
An Elon Musk biopic is in development at A24 with Darren Aronofsky on board to direct. Walter Isaacson’s authorized biography of the controversial tech mogul, published in September 2023, is serving as the basis for the screenplay. Isaacson’s “Steve Jobs” book was previously adapted into the 2015 Universal film of the same name, starring Michael Fassbender as the Apple CEO. Musk addressed the news on X when it was announced by writing in response: “Glad Darren is doing it. He is one of the best.”
Angelina Jolie as Maria Callas
Angelina Jolie is transforming into legendary opera singer Maria Callas in the latest biopic from “Jackie” and “Spencer” director Pablo Larraín. The movie will “explore the life of the legendary, iconic and controversial singer, often described as the original diva,” according to its official description. “Based on true accounts, ‘Maria’ tells the tumultuous, beautiful and tragic story of the life of the world’s greatest opera singer, relived and re-imagined during her final days in 1970s Paris.”
Jolie’s costumes will be based on real garments worn by Callas, including vintage fur items from Massimo Cantini Parrini’s archive collection, on which the crew consulted with PETA in order to not use any new fur.
Daisy Edgar-Jones as Carole King
Daisy Edgar-Jones is playing Carole King in Sony’s upcoming film adaptation of the stage musical “ Beautiful .” The “Normal People” star and upcoming “Twisters” actor is familiar to Sony, having starred in the studio’s box office winner “Where the Crawdads Sing.” She will be directed in “Beautiful” by Academy Award nominee Lisa Cholodenko (“The Kids Are All Right”). Cholodenko and Stuart Blumberg, who co-wrote “Kids Are All Right” together, are behind the script.
“Daisy has a spirit and energy that I recognized as myself when I was younger. She’s a tremendous talent and I know she’s going to give a great performance,” King told Variety .
Tom Holland as Fred Astaire
“Spider-Man” star Tom Holland has long been attached to a biopic on the legendary actor, dancer and singer Fred Astaire for Sony Pictures, the studio where Holland has made a name for herself as the world’s most iconic web-slinger. The actor is already a trained tap dancer.
“Fred Astaire does have a very particular style,” Holland told Variety shortly after the project was first announced. “‘Billy Elliot’ was very much a kind of like scuffy boot kind of tap dancer whereas he is very elegant and graceful so I’ll probably have to learn how to do that. But it’s something I’m gonna practice, something I’m very excited for and I think it will be a fantastic film.”
Billy Porter as James Baldwin
Billy Porter is preparing to portray the author and civil rights activist James Baldwin in an upcoming biopic. He will also co-write the untitled movie with Dan McCabe, which will be adapted from the 1994 book “James Baldwin: A Biography” by David Leeming. An emeritus professor of English at the University of Connecticut, Leeming was well-versed in the world of Baldwin as his friend of 25 years as well as his assistant.
Porter says it has been a career-long dream to tell the story of Baldwin on film. Born in Harlem in 1924, Baldwin was a Black gay writer whose influential works include “Go Tell It on the Mountain,” “Notes of a Native Son” and “If Beale Street Could Talk.” In addition to writing, Baldwin fought for racial justice in the U.S. civil rights movement. In Leeming’s book, he’s described as a “complex, troubled, driven and brilliant man” who has a “gift for compassion and love.”
Marisa Abela as Amy Winehouse
Starring “Industry” actor Marisa Abela as Amy Winehouse and directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson (“Nowhere Boy,” “Fifty Shades of Grey”), the upcoming music biopic “Back to Black” tracks career highs and lows of the music icon.
“‘Back to Black’ is a never-before-seen glimpse into Amy Winehouse’s early rise to fame and the release of her groundbreaking studio album, ‘Back to Black,” the logline reads. “Told from Amy’s perspective, the film is an unapologetic look at the woman behind the phenomenon and the relationship that inspired one of the most legendary albums of all time.”
Hari Nef as Candy Darling
“Barbie” and “Transparent” star Hari Nef is playing Andy Warhol superstar Candy Darling in a biopic directed by Zachary Drucker. John Cameron Mitchell is also attached to the untitled film about the transgender icon as executive producer. The film traces Darling’s childhood in Long Island through her years alongside underground icons Holly Woodlawn and Jackie Curtis in Warhol’s Factory scene, and her influence on musicians including Lou Reed, the Velvet Underground and Patti Smith. She was immortalized in popular songs including Reed’s “Walk on the Wild Side” and The Velvet Underground’s “Candy Says.”
Colman Domingo as Nat King Cole
Oscar nominee Colman Domingo will be starring as the legendary singer Nat King Cole in a movie musical from a script he co-wrote. He will also be making his feature directing debut on the project. This isn’t Domingo’s first rodeo with Cole, as he co-wrote the play “Lights Out: Nat ‘King’ Cole” with Patricia McGregor that premiered at the Geffen Playhouse. That interpretation imagines what might have been going through the singer’s mind during his 1957 Christmas special on “The Nat King Cole Show,” the first network program hosted by an African American.
“I’ve been working on it quietly for a few years,” Domingo said during a Variety Awards Circuit Podcast episode earlier this year. “It’s something I’m looking forward to putting together with some great partners.”

- Trendsetter: Biopic films are Hollywood's new favorite trend, with hits like 'Bohemian Rhapsody' setting the stage for many more to come.
- Star-Studded: A wave of new biopics on icons like Michael Jackson, Amy Winehouse, and Bob Dylan promises captivating cinema experiences.
- A New Era: With upcoming projects like Fred Astaire and Linda Ronstadt biopics on the horizon, Hollywood is embracing music legends on screen.
Hollywood loves to chase trends. If they see that something makes money, every studio in town is bound to start imitating it, and one of the biggest trends at the moment is the biopic film. Ever since Bohemian Rhapsody made $900 million and won 20th Century Fox four Academy Awards — for Best Actor, Best Film Editing, Best Sound Editing, and Best Sound Mixing — it was only a matter of time before moviegoers were up to their eyeballs in biopics. Already, some of the biggest movies of the past year have been biopics. Oppenheimer is universally expected to win at the Oscars, not even in only one category, but multiple, reaching from Best Actor for Cillian Murphy to Best Director for Christopher Nolan.
BlackBerry , which was released in May of last year, won three awards while Elvis star Austin Butler took home a Golden Globe for his charismatic performance as the legendary musician. Given the tremendous success and hype around these movies, the biopic trend is bound to continue. Both Priscilla, about Elvis Presley's ex-wife, and Napoleon, about the French Emperor starring Joaquin Phoenix, also hit theaters at the end of 2023. The next few years will see the biopic become a familiar staple of the release schedule.

For six years, the musical Beautiful found its stage on Broadway, captivating the audience with its incredible performances. Jesse Mueller, who starred as the lead character Carole King, even won a Tony Award for her remarkable talent and dedication. While its time on Broadway has come to an end, the doors to something else opened, because the musical Beautiful will soon be available on the big screens.
Edgar-Jones to Star as King
Lisa Cholodenko's Beautiful is based on the life and career of the highly talented singer Carole King, who also gained recognition as a successful songwriter. The only cast member whose involvement was already announced is Daisy Edgar-Jones. Apart from further news regarding the actors and actresses who will join Edgar-Jones, everyone is also still waiting for a release date.
Antoine Fuqua is directing the upcoming Michael Jackson biopic Michael , which will chronicle the life and legacy of the King of Pop from his rise to fame with the Jackson 5 to his untimely death in 2009 at 50. Singer and actor Jaafar Jackson will portray his iconic uncle after an intense two-year casting process, revealing on his Instagram shortly after the news broke that he was "humbled and honored to bring my Uncle Michael's story to life," with the project marking his Hollywood acting debut.
Music Legend's Buzzed-About Biopic
The legendary entertainer's mother Katherine Jackson even gave the casting decision her seal of approval , expressing in a statement: "Jaafar embodies my son. It’s so wonderful to see him carry on the Jackson legacy of entertainers and performers." Michael will explore the many complex facets of the late musician, shining a light on the highs and lows he experienced throughout his career, though it is unknown if his public controversies will be included in the biopic. Colman Domingo will appear as Joe Jackson while Nia Long will star as Katherine Jackson, and the film is set to hit theaters on April 18, 2025.
Untitled Linda Ronstadt Biopic
Music chameleon Linda Ronstadt is yet another star to receive the biopic treatment, as the influential singer will be the focus of an untitled project that is currently in the works with Selena Gomez attached to headline. Boylan and James Keach are producing the upcoming film, who previously produced the Oscar-winning Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line, and David O. Russell is set to direct. Ronstadt is an 11-time Grammy recipient who has provided her voice to over 120 albums and had a whopping 38 Billboard Hot 100 singles.
A Major Music Trailblazer
Both Ronstadt and Gomez seem equally excited about the upcoming biopic, with the Only Murders in the Building actress taking to her social media to express her elation at portraying the music great: "I have no words to describe my heart for this project ... years of hoping this dream would become my reality." Ronstadt herself mirrored the sentiment about Gomez's involvement in the film, which will depict her struggles breaking into the rock world, sharing the casting news to her own social media accounts and declaring with heart emojis: "It all started with a simple dream."
A Complete Unknown
A Complete Unknown will be another addition to Hollywood's biopics, which already has the public longing for its release. The movie, which will be directed by James Mangold, will take a look at the life of the famous musician Bob Dylan, and highlight how the use of an electric guitar impacted his career. From music festivals to trying out new sounds, and potential love interests, A Complete Unknown seems to have a lot in store. Stepping into the role of the iconic Bob Dylan is none other than Timothée Chalamet.
A Dazzling Film Resume
Having gained recognition due to his roles in Beautiful Boy , Call Me By Your Name , and Dune , there is arguably no better choice than Chalamet. With his incredible versatility and utter dedication to his roles, the actor will likely deliver an exceptional performance. Additionally, another famous performer will join Chalamet's side. Benedict Cumberbatch, who is mostly known for his appearances as Doctor Strange in the Marvel Universe, is said to portray the role of folk musician Pete Seeger.
Seeger played an incredibly important role in Bob Dylan's rise to fame; hence, there will likely be numerous on-screen interactions between Chalamet and Cumberbatch. Unfortunately, production has only recently started , which means that there is no available information regarding a release date yet; however, A Complete Unknown is certainly a biopic to look forward to.
The 12 Best Timothee Chalamet Movies, Ranked
The charismatic young superstar Timothee Chalamet has proved his talents film after film and has become one of the most in-demand stars working today.
Back to Black (2024)
Another biopic which many are looking forward to, is Sam Taylor-Johnson's Back to Black . Focusing on the life of one of the greatest singers, this upcoming movie will finally get the chance to offer insight into Amy Winehouse's incredible career and her troubled day-to-day. Back to Black will capture Winehouse's astounding transformation from jazz singer to Grammy winner , digging deeper into how and why she became one of the biggest superstars.
Winehouse's Spectacular Rise to Stardom
While the movie will tell the story of the singer's impressive successes, Taylor-Johnson finds it equally necessary to tackle further topics such as her alcohol and drug problem, which tragically led to the end of her life at the age of 27. Marisa Abela will step into the role of Amy Winehouse, while Jack O'Connell will take on the role of Blake Fielder-Civil, who was Amy's husband for two years and played a major role in her extreme substance abuse. Back to Black , which is named after one of Amy Winehouse's widely loved songs, will be released on May 17, 2024.
11 Best Movies About Musicians
Movies about rock stars and music biopics are always popular, and these are some of the best and most intimate looks at musicians.
Fred Astaire Biopic
Marvel superstar Tom Holland will be putting on his dancing shoes as he is set to portray actor, singer, and dancer extraordinaire Fred Astaire in a big-screen biopic of the Hollywood icon. News first broke in 2021 that Holland would be starring in the untitled project, and since then it has been revealed that Paul King ( Wonka, Paddington ) will be directing the highly-anticipated film.
A Much-Needed Status Update
The biopic will explore the relationship between Fred and his sister Adele, who were a dynamic duo on the vaudeville scene before finding further success on Broadway. The sensational sibling act ended up parting ways in 1932 when Adele got married, and while Fred was left devastated by the career shake-up it ultimately paved the way for his Tinseltown takeover. After a few years of silence, King commented on the status of the project while promoting the digital release of Wonka , revealing:
"I'm working on a script with Lee Hall, who's a great, great, great writer, a great screenwriter. And he's incredibly well versed in the era and he's historically, incredibly knowledgeable as well. Clearly, he knows his dance inside and out. So, I've been working with him and learning a huge amount."
The always charming Holland should have no problem capturing the magic, wonder, and talent of the renowned performer, whose career spanned 76 years and led to two Golden Globes, a Grammy, and an Honorary Academy Award. The ambitious actor has proven time and time again that he can really sink his teeth into any role and make it his own, so it will be exciting to see how he brings the legend to life.
Alina of Cuba: La Hija Rebelde
Alina of Cuba: La Hija Rebelde is a biopic about Alina Fernández, one of the fiercest critics of the communist Castro regime — who also happened to be Fidel Castro's daughter. Fernández was born to Cuban socialite Natalia Revuelta, whom Castro had an affair with, and wasn't told who her father was until the age of 10. As an outspoken critic and activist, she was frequently arrested by the Castro regime and eventually fled the country and defected to Spain in 1993, making headlines around the world.
Controversial Choice for the Leading Man
The film has drawn criticism for its decision to cast James Franco ( 127 Hours , Spring Breakers ), who is of European descent, as Cuban leader Fidel Castro. Colombian-American actor John Leguizamo ( Moulin Rouge , Encanto ) blasted the casting on Instagram, calling it “F'd up!” Alina Fernández herself, whose life the film is based on, defended the choice, however, noting that Franco has an obvious resemblance to her father and that he is a great actor. Filming began in August 2022 in Cartagena and Bogota, Colombia, whose colonial-era architecture will stand in for Havana, Cuba, but there is no release date yet.
Upcoming Music Biopics Coming Out In 2024 And Beyond
Music hits the big screen...
At some point soon, there will be a lot of upcoming music biopics that we’ll be talking about in the conversation of best musically-inclined biographical dramas . Over the years, we’ve seen some of the most enchanting and unforgettable movie moments from Best Picture winners about beloved and tormented musicians. Movies like Walk the Line , What’s Love Got to Do with It , and more recently, Back to Black , have not only shed light on the careers, lives, and legacies of their subjects, they also introduced new audiences to several of history’s best musicians.
In the coming months and years, audiences will get to take a deep dive into the lives of even more celebrated musicians in the crop of upcoming music biopics. Here are some of the music-centric biographical dramas on the 2024 movie schedule and beyond that we’re excited to see.
Piece By Piece - October 11, 2024
The music biopic format will get a new look this fall when Piece by Piece , an upcoming family-friendly movie telling the life story of Pharrell Williams with Lego bricks (hence the name) hits the big screen. Directed by Morgan Neville, this unique spin on the genre combines elements of documentaries, coming-of-age stories, and hilarious animated comedies like The Lego Movie to retrace the steps and career of one of the most prolific and influential artists of our time.
When Piece by Piece opens in theaters on October 11, 2024, it will see mini-fig versions of Pharrell, Gwen Stefani , Kendrick Lamar, Justin Timberlake , Snoop Dogg , and many others, as well as Daft Punk, according to Variety .
A Complete Unknown - December 25, 2024
This Christmas, Timothée Chalamet will portray one of the most influential musicians in American history: Bob Dylan. James Mangold ’s A Complete Unknown will follow the trailblazing musician around the time he expanded his repertoire and shocked his fans by going electric at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival, according to Deadline . Chalamet, who’s perfect for the role , will be joined by Elle Fanning and Edward Norton, who is set to portray folk legend Pete Seeger.
If Chalamet’s presence and singing voice from the first A Complete Unknown trailer are any indication, this highly anticipated biopic could be one of the best films of the year before it’s all said and done.
Better Man - January 17, 2025
Robbie Williams, one of the most successful and beloved British pop stars will soon be the subject of a biopic titled Better Man , in which he will play himself. Directed by The Greatest Showman helmer Michael Gracy, this promising biographical drama will follow the former Take That member as he goes from a young boy with aspirations of being a performer to a pop idol performing sold out shows at the Royal Albert Hall, and everything in between.

Better Man is slated to have a wide release in the United States starting on January 17, 2025 (after a limited run on December 25, 2024), according to Deadline , which means we might be hearing about the Robbie Williams experience in the upcoming awards season.
Michael - April 18, 2025
Though the 1992 ABC miniseries, The Jacksons: An American Dream , took a deep dive into the life and career of Michael Jackson and his brothers, the King of Pop has never received a proper music biopic. Well, that will change in 2025 with the release of Michael . Directed by Antoine Fuqua, this highly anticipated biographical drama will turn its focus on the pop culture icon, who will be played by his nephew, Jaafar Jackson, though it’s not yet known what all that will entail.
There are some things we know about Michael at this point, including its April 18, 2025 release date, and the fact that Colman Domingo and Nia Long will be playing his parents, Joe and Katherine Jackson. Miles Teller is also set to appear in the movie as John Branca, Jackson’s longtime manager and the co-executor of his estate. We’re all very excited for this long-awaited film to land on the 2025 movie schedule .
Sam Mendes’ Beatles Movies - 2027
Sam Mendes , a director who doesn’t get talked about enough , is preparing to take on what could possibly be his most ambitious project yet, four movies about the Beatles . If all things go according to plan, the 1917 filmmaker will release a series of biopics, with each film centering on a specific member of the iconic rock outfit.
Details are slim to none at this early stage in the films’ development, but there are plenty of key events that would make for great scenes in whatever this ends up being. Mendes, who has made movies like American Beauty and Skyfall throughout his career, will be more than up to the task, and hopefully, that’s the case for whoever signs on to play John, Paul, George, and Ringo. And according to Variety , the movies will start rolling out at some point in 2027.
Maria - TBD
Pablo Larraín, the Academy Award-winning Chilean filmmaker behind biopics like Neruda , Jackie , and Spencer , will return to the genre once again with his upcoming project, Maria . The movie, which doesn’t have a release date at this time, will see Angelina Jolie take on the role of iconic opera singer, Maria Callas.
According to The Hollywood Reporter , which shared first-look images from the upcoming movie in October 2023, Maria will tell the story of Callas’ final days in 1970s Paris, though not a lot of other details have been released concerning the plot. Production was slated to kick off around that time.
The Nat King Cole Biopic - TBD
Colman Domingo, who’ll also play Joe Jackson in another upcoming biopic, has been on a tear as of late, and that momentum will hopefully be enough to get his long-in-the-works Nat King Cole biopic into theaters sooner rather than later. In January 2025, the Rustin and Sing Sing star told Variety’s Awards Circuit Podcast that the movie, which he is attached to lead and direct, is something he’s been working on quietly for a number of years and something he’s looking forward to putting together.
According to Variety , this isn’t the first time the Academy Award nominee has crafted a project based on the “Unforgettable” singer, as Domingo previously co-wrote the play Lights Out: Nat King Cole which followed the singer during his 1957 Christmas special, the first of its kind hosted by an African American performer.
Shout It Out Loud (Kiss) - TBD
KISS, one of the biggest rock bands (and brands) of all time, will be getting the biopic treatment at some point in the future, as Deadline has reported that McG is slated to direct Shout It Out Loud , a film based on the life and career of the iconic outfit. Details about the movie are scarce at this point in its development, but considering the history and iconography that made the Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley-led rock group so legendary over the past 50 years, this could be a flashy, splashy, and over-the-top rock pic.
Expect to hear more about this exciting project in the coming weeks and months as more details are announced.
Janis Joplin Biopic - TBD
Though one of the most transformative and beloved singers of the ‘60s counter-culture movement, Janis Joplin has never been the subject of a biographical drama, though there have been numerous attempts . Well, that will soon change as Variety has reported that Big Little Lies star Shailene Woodley is set to play the “Piece of My Heart” singer in an untitled biopic.
The singer, who’s remembered for her electric performances and powerful voice, passed away in October 1970, joining the ranks of other famous musicians like Jim Morrison and Jimi Hendrix who passed away at the age of 27. There’s no word on which aspects of Joplin’s career will be documented in the upcoming film, but hopefully, it includes her legendary Woodstock set.
Frank Sinatra Biopic - TBD
One of the most exciting music biographical dramas in the works, Martin Scorsese’s Frank Sinatra biopic will focus on the life and career of the iconic crooner and actor who dominated American music and pop culture throughout the 20th century. Though details are limited at this point, Variety reported in April 2024 that the Killers of the Flower Moon director was looking to make the movie one of his next two projects and that longtime collaborator Leonardo DiCaprio was being eyed for the lead role alongside Jennifer Lawrence.
Expect to hear a lot more about this high-profile biopic in the coming months, as this could be one of the best of its kind in quite some time.
Deliver Me From Nowhere - TBD
Bruce Springsteen is one of the most iconic American rockers, and his 1982 stripped-down LP titled Nebraska is one of the best records of, not only his career, but in rock music history. At some point in the near future, Scott Cooper’s Deliver Me From Nowhere will explore how “The Boss” crafted his masterpiece and everything that led to it.
Not a whole lot is known about the movie at this point, but The Bear ’s Jeremy Allen White is set to portray the New Jersey rock ‘n roll icon while Succession star Jeremy Strong will be joining the biopic as Springsteen’s longtime manager, Jon Landau. When speaking on the role with Deadline in September 2024, White said he felt “really lucky” to be playing the decorated rocker. Both Springsteen and Landau are serving as producers on the film, so don’t get too worried about its authenticity.
Linda Ronstadt Biopic - TBD
Linda Ronstadt, the 11-time Grammy winner behind iconic tracks like “You’re No Good,” “Somewhere Out There,” and “Blue Bayou” will be getting the biopic treatment at some point in the future, and the actress tied to portraying her has us very excited. In January 2024, Rolling Stone confirmed that Only Murders in the Building star Selena Gomez was attached to star in the untitled movie after she shared an image of Ronstadt’s Simple Dreams memoir on her Instagram page.
Not a lot is known about the movie at this time, including its cast, director, and official title. With Gomez being one of the biggest names in pop culture right now, it probably won’t be long before we hear more about this exciting music biopic.
Fred Astaire Biopic - TBD
Hollywood has seen few stars who have shined as bright as Fred Astaire, the legendary entertainer who could seemingly do it all, and better than anyone else. Well, at some point in the future, Tom Holland will play the legendary actor/singer/dancer/musician/choreographer in a biopic that has been long in the works. According to The Hollywood Reporter , the movie, which is being directed by Paddington and Wonka ’s Paul King, will center on the relationship shared by Astaire and his sister, Adele.
There hasn’t been any word on who will be playing Adele Astaire, but considering her talent was only eclipsed by that of her brother, the ideal candidate will need to be able to sing and dance alongside the Spider-Man star.
Beautiful - TBD
We’ve seen several long-running Broadway musicals get turned into big-screen adaptations in recent years with the likes of The Color Purple and Mean Girls . At some point soon, we’ll have another addition to that list with Beautiful , a movie based on the Tony Award-winning Beautiful: The Carole King Musical .
In December 2022, Variety revealed a ton of information about the project, including that Where the Crawdads Sing star Daisy Edgar-Jones would be playing the beloved musician in the biopic helmed by The Kids Are All Right director Lisa Cholodenko. There aren’t a lot of details about the movie at this time, but Sony Pictures did secure the rights to King’s catalog of hits, meaning we’ll be hearing some legendary tracks in the musical biopic.
The Grateful Dead Biopic - TBD
The Grateful Dead, one of the pioneers of the jam band movement in the 20th century, will be getting the biographical drama treatment at some point in the future. What makes this so exciting is the fact that Martin Scorsese is attached to direct, Variety reported in November 2021. This won’t be the filmmaker’s first time working on a project about the Dead, as he previously helmed the 2017 documentary, Long Strange Trip .
Deadline also reported that Jonah Hill, who worked with Scorsese in The Wolf of Wall Street , had been tapped to play Garcia in the biopic. There hasn’t been any word on when the project will enter production or who will join Hill in the cast.
Sublime Biopic - TBD
Sublime, the iconic ‘90s band that became a massive hit thanks to its blend of punk, reggae, rock, and late singer Bradley Nowell’s signature voice, will be getting the biopic treatment if everything goes to plan. In September 2022, Variety reported that Francis Lawrence, the director behind I Am Legend and the Hunger Games movies , was spearheading the untitled project for Sony’s 3000 Pictures.
There hasn’t been much in terms of details about the biopic centered around the Long Beach alternative rock band, but it would be interesting to see how the movie handles the band’s rapid rise to fame and Nowell’s tragic death just before the release of their self-titled album.
Bee Gees Biopic - TBD
There has been talk of a movie about the Bee Gees for years, but it looks like it may really be happening this time. In December 2022, Deadline reported that Hustlers director Lorene Scafaria would be helming the Paramount Pictures biographical drama after original helmer, John Carney, backed out.
Not much is known at this time, and we don’t yet know who will be playing the chart-topping disco group best known for coming up with beloved tracks like “Stayin’ Alive” and “How Deep Is Your Love?” on the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack.
We will make sure to keep everyone updated on the status of each of these projects (and any new biographical dramas) as more information becomes available. But, in the meantime, take a look at our rundown of 10 biopics about black musicians everyone should watch.
Philip grew up in Louisiana (not New Orleans) before moving to St. Louis after graduating from Louisiana State University-Shreveport. When he's not writing about movies or television, Philip can be found being chased by his three kids, telling his dogs to stop barking at the mailman, or chatting about professional wrestling to his wife. Writing gigs with school newspapers, multiple daily newspapers, and other varied job experiences led him to this point where he actually gets to write about movies, shows, wrestling, and documentaries (which is a huge win in his eyes). If the stars properly align, he will talk about For Love Of The Game being the best baseball movie of all time.
