Entry-Level

To write a great recent graduate cover letter that can truly help you break into your industry, the key is to show the most compelling aspects of your academic career and internships. Carefully analyze the role you’re applying for and identify how your unique skill sets align with the company’s needs. By tailoring your document towards individual opportunities, you’ll maximize your chances of landing an entry-level position. Below, we’ll walk you through each step of building your recent graduate cover letter:

1. Contact information and salutation

List all essential contact information at the top of your recent graduate cover letter, including your name, phone number, email, and LinkedIn URL. Be sure to address the hiring manager by name — Mr. or Ms. [Last Name]. If you can’t find the hiring manager’s name, use a variation of “Dear Hiring Manager.” This is preferable to salutations such as “To Whom It May Concern,” as these types of greetings are largely considered outdated.

2. Introduction

Open your recent graduation cover letter with a powerful introduction to grab the hiring manager’s attention and convey your interest in the job. Feature an eye-catching achievement from your resume and highlight key skills the organization is looking for. If you don’t have an internship you can point to, showcase academic achievements that demonstrate your qualifications for the job.

In the example below, the candidate has a unique advantage due to their experience interning at a large financial institution. This adds a certain level of credibility to the knowledge and skills they gained. That said, even if you haven’t had a similar opportunity, you can still hook the reader in the opening paragraph of your recent graduate cover letter by carefully tailoring it toward the job description.

During my internship with Brooklyn Financial Services, I interacted with a team of financial analysts to evaluate investment opportunities for a multimillion-dollar firm. This experience gave me valuable knowledge of business models, product use cases, and financial forecasting, which makes me the ideal candidate for the financial analyst position with your company.

3. Body paragraphs

In the body paragraphs of your recent graduate cover letter, continue to focus on achievements from your internships. If you haven’t had the opportunity to work in your field, draw attention to your academic projects. Using a list of bullet points to break up the monotony of the text on the page is helpful here, as this will improve the overall readability of your document. It’s also important to mention the organization’s reputation or mission statement and how it aligns with your background and professional values.

New England Marketing Inc.’s reputation for driving customer success draws me to apply for this position. My expertise in brand messaging and social media marketing will allow me to provide valuable contributions to your organization based on my career achievements:

  • Supported the marketing team in executing social media campaigns on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter platforms and utilized Hootsuite to schedule posts based on KPIs, resulting in a 500% increase in followership on LinkedIn
  • Collaborated with copywriters and SEO specialists to create engaging copy and brand messaging, which resulted in a 10% increase in page views for a customer website
  • Served on a student marketing team to manage Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn social media pages for Columbia University under the supervision of the marketing manager

4. Recent graduate cover letter skills and qualifications

To compensate for a lack of hands-on industry experience, leverage the skills and knowledge you’ve gained from your academic career in your recent graduate cover letter. Instead of providing a comprehensive list, focus on integrating relevant key terms from the job description into your paragraph. Emphasize how you’ve utilized these skill sets in your internships and academic projects. Below, you’ll find a range of potential skills across a variety of industries:

Key Skills and Qualifications
Academic research Analytical
Business analysis Business strategy
Client relations Cloud technology
Communication Computer science
Content writing Cross-functional collaboration
Data analysis Data analytics
Financial analysis Marketing
Nursing Patient care
Sales Team leadership

5. Closing section

Include a call to action in the conclusion of your recent graduate cover letter. Invite the hiring manager to bring you in for an interview or reach out for more information on your background. Emphasize how your skill sets can translate effectively to a professional industry setting. Be sure to thank the hiring manager for their time and consideration in the last sentence.

I look forward to speaking with you further regarding how my application development experience can aid Solaris Software Inc. in continuing to create value for users. You may contact me via phone or email at your earliest convenience. I appreciate your time and consideration.

Recent Graduate Cover Letter Tips

1. leverage your internships.

One of the best ways to grab the hiring manager’s attention is by leveraging your internships. This shows potential employers you’ve acquired hands-on experience, which can be exactly the type of information that advances you to the next phase of the hiring process. Be sure to provide context and numbers for any notable achievements, as this will heighten the impact of your positive contributions.

2. Feature academic achievements and certifications

If you haven’t had the opportunity to pursue an internship, you can still make a strong impression on the hiring manager by featuring your academic achievements. Instead of only mentioning coursework, call out impressive projects that demonstrate how you’ve applied industry skills while completing your degree.

3. Showcase volunteerism and community service

Another way to compensate for a lack of hands-on work experience is by highlighting community service and volunteerism on your cover letter. Even if this isn’t relevant to your field, in some instances, this can help show potential employers you’re the right culture fit for their organization. It also sends a positive message in regard to your personal values.

Why should i include a recent graduate cover letter -.

While not every job will require a cover letter during the application process, including one can help bolster your chances of landing the interview, especially as a recent graduate. This allows you to make a strong introduction and display your most relevant qualifications using a more personal approach than you would on your resume.

How do I make my cover letter stand out? -

To make your cover letter stand out, carefully research the company you’re applying to. Think about how your academic background and experience match the needs of the organization. Mention something specific about the company and why it drew you to pursue the opportunity. This shows you’re a serious candidate who’s truly engaged in the hiring process.

How long should my cover letter be? -

Keep your cover letter concise and focused, limited to no more than three or four paragraphs. This ensures your document is centered on your most relevant academic achievements, internships, and industry-related skills. Avoid padding your cover letter with fluff and generic buzzwords, as this doesn’t provide any valuable information that would interest the hiring manager.

Craft a new cover letter in minutes

Get the attention of hiring managers with a cover letter tailored to every job application.

Business and management cover letter example

A well-written business and management cover letter leverages your best and puts you in line for the job. Recruiters are on the lookout for candidates who can show their business acumen and how they will add value to the companies for which they want to work.

You may dismiss the cover letter as secondary to your resume, and that may or may not be true, but rest assured that if your resume is impressive, your cover letter will be read. This is the document that may distinguish you from other qualified candidates.

So how do you increase your capital in the eyes of recruiters? Read on.

Our business and management cover letter examples coupled with this guide will detail following topics to help you design the best cover letter possible:

  • How to choose the best cover letter format and what paragraphs the cover letter should include
  • How to maximize the effect of each cover letter paragraph (header, greeting, intro, body and conclusion)
  • What approach to take when writing your cover letter
  • What mistakes to avoid when writing your business and management cover letter.

The guide below will analyze the details and give you ideas on how to make the most of this one-page addition to your application. (You can also check out our library of 125+ cover letter examples ).

Best format for a business and management cover letter

Before you start listing metrix, you need to understand the structure of your document. Every business and management cover letter should include the following elements:

  • The cover letter header
  • The greeting / salutation
  • The cover letter intro
  • The middle paragraphs (body of the letter)
  • The ending paragraph of your cover letter (conclusion and call-to-action)

What are you trying to convey within this structure and what is the best way to do it? Maintain a consistent tone and make sure all the points you make relate directly to your main message.

For a general idea of how to go about writing an application, the comprehensive cover letter guide is a great read, but this text offers a focused approach to each section of business and management cover letter.

The business and management cover letter example below gives an overview of how to create your own application:

Dear Mr. Lopez,

It is with great enthusiasm that I hope to be considered as a candidate for the Business Director position currently seeking fulfillment at the Foley Group. I bring forth experience, education, and the necessary skills to effectively carry out this role, drive new business, and resolve business challenges. In the last decade I have worked as a Director for Gradient and Action Force, where I worked hard to achieve business objectives. I am hoping to bring the same passion and energy to the Foley Group as a dedicated Business Director.

I understand that you are looking for someone who specializes in strategy and solutions, and I can assure you that I have continuously provided my former places of employment with both. I am highly adept in creating risk assessments for new initiatives that outline business risk and operational impacts. As a Business Director for the Foley Group I will work tirelessly to evaluate business and operational impacts and design high level solutions.

Is there a time we can set aside to further discuss the value I can bring to the Foley Group as a Business Director? Please contact me at your earliest convenience.

Most Sincerely,

Davina Matthews

Cover letter header

While it may be true that you can’t judge a book by it’s cover, that doesn’t mean that human nature allows us to discount our first visual impression. That’s what makes the header so important. You need to present a professional, organized and analytic image. When you design the header of your cover letter, take that into account.

The main point of this section is to get your contact information in front of the recruiter. By that we mean your name, email and best phone number. No need to list your address unless it is pertinent to the job. If you want the job, you will make sure it’s easy to reach you by making sure this information is legible and accessible.

Aim for consistency

When you apply for a job, you’re making a presentation, so use the same principles you use then. Choose a consistent theme for both your resume and cover letter. This approach makes for a more polished application and ensures that your documents will be seen as a unit.

The aim of this section: Present a businesslike image and get your contact information before the eyes of the recruiter.

Cover letter greeting

The greeting of your business and management cover letter sets the tone for the user experience. Recruiters are people, too, and they like to be addressed politely and by name.

Therefore, we recommend “Dear Mr/Mrs/Ms. Surname.”

This standard, but friendly, start will show that you did some homework before sitting down to compile your application and it will engage the reader who you addressed correctly. Remember to triple check that you have the spelling and honorific correct. There’s no quicker way to lose points than to misspell someone’s name or get their gender wrong.

Our cover letter samples typically use this style, but if you cannot get the name of a person, “to whom it may concern” is a fine alternative. If you are sure that a company has a casual culture, you can use “Dear _______ team,” or wording to that effect.

The aim of the cover letter greeting: Use the hiring manager’s name to set the tone for a friendly but professional letter.

Cover letter introduction

Think of your introduction as your elevator pitch. You have to pique the interest of the hiring manager quickly or they won’t read on. That means presenting your business philosophy or management style and following it up with your career highlight all within the first paragraph.

Jump right in with your core competency and offer an overview of your career. Show confidence that you are the right person for the job (and make sure you tell the recruiter exactly why). This is not a self performance review or time for reflecting on your errors. If you want the job, you need to make sure you show off your best.

Give recruiters an idea of what it’s like to work with you or for you and tease what’s coming up in your body paragraphs. Keep your tone professional, but confident.

The aim of the cover letter intro: State your business plan with confidence and show why you will exceed expectations while getting the job done.

Cover letter middle part (body)

Great managers engage their employees, value their talents and make room for their ideas. They motivate and reward excellence. (For the top 8 behaviors of great managers, check out this Gallup research .) The middle part of your business and management cover letter gives you the space to show how you do these things or, if you are not in a management role, how you respond to your manager’s style and take your work to the next level.

Choose the top two or three achievements of your career. You are trying to show that you can step into your new position with an understanding of what it takes to do a great job, so make sure your examples illustrate how you will solve a pain point in your new role. Use examples of your people skills and your business and technical knowledge.

Focus the recruiter’s eye on your biggest successes by using bullets, which also serves to break up big blocks of type. Use strong action words to begin each item. Data and details will make your point stronger.

The aim of the body of your cover letter:  Show exactly how you will use your skill to add value to the company you are applying to work at.

How to close a business and management cover letter (conclusion and sign-off)

It’s time to close the deal. You have one final paragraph and recruiters are waiting for your big finish, so give it to them!

Start by restating why you are the candidate for the job. Then, relate a story that gives this some weight. Maybe you had a great mentor and now you want to be one. Perhaps you pride yourself on your amazing spreadsheets or your financial modeling. Maybe you have an origin story for your great marketing campaign. This is the place to show those off. These items add a personal touch to your conclusion and may entice the recruiter to follow up during an interview.

Finally, you need a call to action. Don’t be shy to politely request an interview. Our business and management cover letter example offers one way to accomplish that. Sign off with “Sincerely” or “Best regards.”

Avoiding basic mistakes in a business and management application letter

  • Spell check, grammar check, proofread! We can’t say this enough. If you show you don’t have great attention to detail in your application, how will you do on the job?
  • Use natural language. Keep the business jargon to a minimum. Your main goal is to get your message across clearly, so avoid confusing language or language that may mean different things to different people.
  • Keep your anecdotes to one or two sentences. If a story needs too much explanation, it’s best saved for the interview.

Key takeaways for a business and management cover letter

  • You need soft skills as well as a strong business sense and technical competence, so make sure you vary your examples to show you are well-rounded.
  • Use a confident tone to explain why you are an outstanding candidate for the job.
  • Define what it is like to work with your and/or for you.
  • Show off the biggest career success you have that will translate to a win in your new job.

You can edit them as needed to fit your own personal and professional experiences. With our help, you’ll be well on your way to landing your dream job.

The Best Structure for an Application Letter Example for Fresh Graduate

As a fresh graduate, writing an application letter can be a daunting task. It’s your first step towards getting your dream job, and you want to make a good first impression. A well-written application letter highlights your skills, experiences, and qualifications and allows you to stand out from other applicants. Here are some tips on the best structure for an application letter for a fresh graduate.

The first thing to include in your application letter is a professional heading. The heading should include your name, your contact details (phone number and email address), and the date. Format the heading to be aligned to the left side of the letter, and use a standard font size and style like Times New Roman or Arial.

2. Salutation

The second thing to include is a formal salutation. Address the letter to the hiring manager or recruiter, using their name and job title. If you are not sure who to address the letter to, you can use “Dear Hiring Manager.” Avoid using “To Whom It May Concern” as it is too generic and may show lack of interest.

3. Introduction

The introduction should include your intention for writing the letter. State the position you’re applying for and where you found out about the job opening. Show enthusiasm and interest in the position with a brief statement or two, convincing the reader that you’re the perfect fit for the role.

4. Body Paragraphs

The body of the letter should focus on highlighting your skills and qualifications. Convey your experiences related to the position you’re applying for and provide examples to demonstrate your skill set. Focus on achievements and projects that showcase your adaptability, team-player mentality, and multiple skills. Use bullet points to list specific details about your experiences, making sure it is well-detailed but concise. Show how your transferable skills and education align with the job description and the organization’s core values. Always tie the experience or credentials back to the company’s goals.

5. Closing Paragraph

The closing paragraph should thank the reader for their time and consideration. Restate your interest in the position, and indicate your availability for an interview. Include a call-to-action by encouraging them to review your application and resume or add any additional information they would like. Mention that you are excited about hearing from them soon.

6. Closing Salutation

End the letter formally, using “Sincerely” and your name. Underneath, include any professional certifications or degrees you possess which reinforces your standing among other applicants.

In conclusion, the above structure serves as a guide to creating an appropriate application letter for a fresh graduate position. Stick to the structure and customize it to mirror your abilities and experiences. In the end, your letter should showcase your professionalism, passion, and interest in the position. Good luck in your job search!

How long should my application letter be?

Your application letter should be brief and concise, ideally no more than one page. Avoid lengthy paragraphs and use bullet points to highlight key points and achievements.

What format should I use for my application letter?

Your application letter should be in business letter format, which includes the date, recipient’s name and address, salutation, body of the letter, closing, and signature. Use a professional font and size, and make sure to proofread for errors before sending.

What should I do if I don’t have any work experience?

If you don’t have any work experience, focus on highlighting your academic achievements, extracurricular activities, volunteer work, and relevant skills that you have developed. How long should I wait to follow up after submitting my application letter?

It’s advisable to wait about one to two weeks after submitting your application letter before following up with the employer. Application Letters for Fresh Graduates: See Two Samples That Work

If you’re a fresh grad looking for a job, then you know very well the challenge of writing an application letter. Together with your resume, an application letter is one of the two main documents you need to finally get a job and join the workforce.

But with no job experience, what should you include? Read these sample application letters for fresh graduates, and use them as a starting point to write yours.

Application Letters: Some Basics

What’s the difference between an application letter and a cover letter.

A cover letter is literally a cover sheet for your resume: “Here is my resume, please consider me for XXX job.” An application letter is longer and more detailed, because it can be sent on its own, without a resume or a specific job in mind: “Hello, I am XXX, interested in a job at your company. Here are my qualifications.”

That’s in theory. Here in the Philippines though, the terms are interchangeable. In this article, your “application letter” is a one-pager that introduces your resume for a specific role. It describes your skills and markets your abilities. It’s your brief, formal way to introduce yourself – and make HR teams notice your resume and offer you an interview.

Why do I need an application letter, when the information is in my resume?

Your resume follows a strict format, including keywords that you’ve pulled from the job listing. In contrast, an application letter gives you some room to express yourself, and highlight why you’re different from all your batchmates applying for the same job.

Most important, a letter identifies the job you’re applying for. Have you ever seen a resume headlined “[NAME], HR Associate”?  No.

Do resume scanning systems even read application letters?

Some job ads specify “No cover letter”, but this is rare. If the listing doesn’t mention a cover letter, or says “Cover letter optional”, then you should write one. As with your resume, you should use keywords from the job ad in your letter to raise your application’s place in the rankings.

Once you’re ready to write your letter, use these samples to get started.

Dear Mr. Chua,

Having obtained my Bachelor’s Degree in [XXXX]  major in Human Resources in [XXX] University, I hope to bring my knowledge, skills, and commitment to excellence to BPI.

With my major in HR management, I am familiar with standard processes for recruitment, workforce organization, training, and compensation, as well as legal provisions and labor concerns.

My internship at San Miguel Corporation gave me the chance to work with top professionals in recruitment and HR. Being a trainee there developed my enthusiasm for human resources, and convinced me that HR management is my true calling.

Application Letter Tip: When submitting a hard copy, always follow the business letter format. Your letter and resume do not need expensive paper or flowery words, but they do need to be error-free and professional. Use an online program to check grammar, spelling and punctuation. Before printing, proofread again, then ask a friend to do so too.

Application Letter Sample 2 (Email)

This application letter sample below is tailored for email. Note the subject line and the absence of mailing addresses.

Email Subject: Alvin Marfal, Marketing Associate Position [Keep your subject line brief and straightforward.]

Dear Ms. Castañeda,

I would like to apply for your company’s recently announced position of Marketing Associate.

I am a recent graduate of [XXX], major in Marketing, from [XXX] University. My studies there have given me the skills to develop marketing campaigns and drive strategies, especially through the efficient use of social media.

During my internship at XXX Corporation’s Marketing Department, I learned how companies decide what products to sell, how to reach target customers, and how to react to competition. I also had the opportunity to work with seasoned professionals. They taught me how marketing concepts apply outside the classroom, how to blend with a group’s culture, and strive for common goals despite setbacks.

Finally, through active involvement in academics and extracurriculars, I developed communication and leadership skills that make me a valued member of any marketing team.

I attach my resume for your consideration. Thank you for taking time to review my application. I look forward to your reply so that we can further discuss it.

Yours sincerely,

Alvin C. Marfal (email address / mobile number)

Application Letter Tip: Check your subject line before pressing “Send.” A typo error in your email subject won’t reflect positively on you – and could result in your mail being ignored by the resume software. Our email subject above follows the usual format (name, position). However, some recruiters require a specific subject line or number code. Check the job ad to be sure.

Include your contact details on the email signature, so the recruiter can respond to you immediately.

To create a cover letter that stands out, customize.

Finally, remember that these are just samples to help you get started. Templates are guide that you can certainly customize. You have to change the name, position and company anyway, and of course the content of the letter as befits the job you are eyeing.

So when you follow these formats,  take time to write simply and clearly about yourself. Skip the legalese (“Attached herewith”) and the cliches (“out of the box”, “passionate”). In addition, be specific (see Alvin’s three marketing skills above) and consider the norms of your industry. Finally, don’t forget to proofread!

Your letter should prove that you’ve done your homework, understand the job requirements, and are the best person for the role. For example, this witty sample application letter for a fresh graduate is great for a content manager, but not for a technical or administrative job.

Now that you can write a good application letter, don’t let your new skills go to waste. #LetsGetToWork by finding out which companies are looking for fresh grads like you.

Dear Mr. Richard,

RE: Application for Graduate Trainee Position

As a young and motivated individual, I am extremely interested in applying for the advertised Graduate Trainee Position with Alan & Grant Plc.

In November 2011, I completed my undergraduate studies and obtained a degree in Business Administration. This has given me a range of practical capabilities that will meet the needs of this role.

While rounding up my undergraduate studies, I worked part-time as a Customer Service Assistant for Shoprite. My responsibilities in this role included providing face-to-face customer service and assisting on the floor with stock movements and visual merchandising. This position has given me key employability skills while also allowing me to have an experience of working in a professional and fast-paced work environment.

Management Trainee

Aspiring to become an executive, a management trainee works under managers in order to gain a deep understanding of business organizations and how they work. Management trainees should be certainly knowledgeable about the principles of finance and business analysis, but they are no strangers to such areas as operations, information technology, data analytics or human resource management.

These Graduate Scheme cover letter examples provide you with some guidance and inspiration for writing a cover letter that gets noticed and ensures your CV will get opened.

But if you really want to master the art of writing a winning cover letter , then follow our step-by-step cove letter writing guide below.

How to write a Graduate Scheme cover letter

Here’s a simple process to write your own interview-winning cover letter.

How to write a cover letter

Write your cover letter in the body of an email/message

You should write your cover letter in the body of the email (or messaging system if sending via a job board) and never attach it as a document.

The reason for this?

You want your cover letter to start connecting with the recruiter from the moment they open your application.

If they have to open a document to read it, it will slow things down and they may not even bother to open it.

Write cover letter in body of email

Start with a friendly greeting

Cover letter address

Start you cover letter with a greeting that is professional but friendly.

This will build rapport with the recruiter whilst showing your professionalism.

  • Hi, hope you’re well
  • Hi [insert recruiter name]
  • Hi [insert department/team name]

Avoid overly formal greetings like “Dear sir/madam ” unless applying to very traditional companies.

How to find the contact’s name?

Addressing the recruitment contact by name is an excellent way to start building a strong relationship. If it is not listed in the job advert, try these methods to find it.

  • Check out the company website and look at their  About page. If you see a hiring manager, HR person or internal recruiter, use their name. You could also try to figure out who would be your manager in the role and use their name.
  • Head to LinkedIn , search for the company and scan through the list of employees. Most professionals are on LinkedIn these days, so this is a good bet.

Identify the role you are applying for

Now that you have warmed the recruiter up with a friendly greeting, firstly you need to let them know which role you are applying for.

Sometimes a recruitment consultant will be juggling 10 or 10 vacancies, so it’s important to specify which one you are applying to.

Give us much detail as possible (team/department, role title etc.) and paste in the reference number if you have one.

Here are some examples you can use.

  • I am interested in applying for the Graduate Scheme with your company.
  • I would like to apply for the role of Sales assistant (Ref: 40f57393)
  • I would like to express my interest in the customer service vacancy within your retail department
  • I saw your advert for an IT project manager on Reed and would like to apply for the role.

Highlight your suitability

The bulk of your cover letter should be focused around highlighting your suitability for the job you are applying to.

Doing this will show the recruiter that you are suitable candidate and encourage them to open your CV.

The best way to do this, is by studying the job advert you are applying to, and find out what the most important skills and knowledge are.

Once you know the most important requirements, you then need to highlight your matching skills to the recruiter. In a few sentences, tell them exactly why you are a good fit for the job and what you can offer the company.

Cover letter tips

Keep it short and sharp

A good cover letter is short and sharp, getting to the point quickly with just enough information to grab the attention of recruiters.

Ideally your cover letter should be around 4-8 sentences long – anything longer will risk losing the attention of time-strapped recruiters and hiring managers .

Essentially you need to include just enough information to persuade the reader to open up your CV, where the in-depth details will sit.

Sign off professionally

To finish off your cover note, add a professional signature to the bottom, stating your important contact details and information.

This not only provides recruiters with multiple means of contacting you, but it also adds a nice professional appearance to the cover letter, which shows that you know how to conduct yourself in the workplace.

Include the following points;

  • A friendly sign off – e.g. “Warm regards”
  • Your full name
  • Phone number (one you can answer quickly)
  • Email address
  • Profession title
  • Professional social network – e.g. LinkedIn

Here is an example signature;

Warm regards,

Aaron Smith Customer service professional 075557437373 [email protected] LinkedIn

Quick tip : To save yourself from having to write your signature every time you send a job application, you can save it within your email drafts, or on a separate document that you could copy in.

What to include in your Graduate Scheme cover letter

Your Graduate Scheme cover letter will be unique to your situation, but there are certain content guidelines you should stick to for best results.

To attract and entice recruiters, stick with the following key subjects in your cover letter – adapting them to fit your profession and target jobs.

  • Your professional experience – Employers will be keen to know if your experience is suitable for the job you are applying to, so provide a good summary of it in your cover letter.
  • Your qualifications and education – Highlight your most relevant and high-level of qualification, especially if they are essential to the job.
  • The positive impact you have made – Employers love to hear about the benefits you can bring to them, so shout about anything impressive you have done, such as saving money or improving processes.
  • Your reasons for leaving – Use a few words of your cover letter to explain why you are leaving your current job and ensure you avoid any negative reasons.
  • Your availability – Let recruiters know when you can start a new job . Are you immediately available, or do you have a month notice period?

Introducing the Application for the MBA Class of 2027

Bruce DelMonico, assistant dean for admissions, outlines what has changed and what hasn’t in the new application, which is now live.

Bruce DelMonico

As the 2024-25 admissions cycle begins, I’d like to share a few thoughts about the Yale SOM MBA application and some of its new aspects, to help you think about and prepare your Yale SOM candidacy.

I’ll start by saying that this year’s application remains largely the same as last year’s. Many of the core elements of the application haven’t changed, including the essay question, which allows applicants to choose among (1) the biggest commitment you’ve ever made, (2) the community that has been most meaningful to you, or (3) the most significant challenge you have faced. We introduced these choices last year to give applicants the opportunity to write about what’s truly most important to them. The feedback, both from our own review of applicant essays and the comments we received from applicants themselves, suggests that that’s exactly how the prompts worked— applicants seemed to like the choices they were given in terms of topics, and we really liked the essays they wrote. So we’re following that reliable advice: “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

Another change we made last year was to further expand the Background Information section of the application—something we’ve been doing for several years—to allow applicants to provide more contextual information about the individual circumstances in which they’ve lived, studied, and worked. Our overarching goal is to expand access to graduate management education to the broadest range of individuals possible, and knowing as much as we can about the context of your candidacy is one way we’re able to do that.

The most significant change to our application this year is also aimed at increasing access, but in a different way. We already offered a sliding-scale application fee structure to lower the cost of applying to Yale SOM, as well as full application fee waivers to candidates who fall within certain categories, including U.S. military members and veterans, Teach for All members or alumni, Forté MBALaunch and MBA Launch for Undergrads program participants, and U.S. Peace Corps volunteers. This year, we’ve added a new application fee waiver category: students and alumni of nearly  700 U.S. colleges and universities that have significant initiatives to promote economic diversity, including schools where at least 35% of students receive Pell Grants. We know that school choice can largely be driven by circumstances and the opportunities that are available to someone, so we continue to work to make sure we’re expanding opportunities to individuals for whom financial considerations may loom especially large in the decision-making process. Expanding our application fee waiver program to students and alumni of these schools is one additional way we’re trying to increase access to graduate management education.

As you explore your MBA options and begin to work on your application, we invite you to learn more about Yale SOM and how to navigate the MBA application process. I would particularly point you to our first major online event, Inside the Application, Literally , hosted by my colleague Laurel Grodman YC ’02, SOM ’06, assistant dean for admissions. Laurel will give a live walk-through of the MBA application and offer insider advice on how to complete it. We also have a variety of other events and resources to help you with your application, including our Application Guide . And of course, if you still have questions, you can always  contact us directly.
