Karnataka SSLC English Model Question Paper Design 3

  • Weightage to difficulty level remains the same at 20%.
  • Instead of lesson wise weightage, theme wise weightage is given.

Learning language is a skill, too much stress on textual content encourages rote learning among the students without understanding the content. Objective type and short answer questions are viewed by the students as easy and descriptive answers as difficult. Though in reality, all these questions require comprehension of the subject matter. To improve the quality of writing, the focus should be on the expressive and descriptive aspects of the language.

In this regard, minor changes have been made in this year’s question paper pattern. Reducing the weightage of 1 and 2 mark questions and increasing the weightage of long answer questions will help in preparing a balanced question paper and also prevents the possibilities of malpractice. Cognitive level based weightage gives a free hand to the teacher to explore and frame different kinds of questions covering important aspects of language learning.

This shift towards enhancing writing skills also marks a shift in teaching learning process. Stress should be on developing language skills instead of procuring marks by rote learning. Improving language proficiency should be the aim as it helps the students to move to the next stage of higher education with confidence.

Weightage to difficulty level:

Karnataka SSLC English Model Question Paper Design 1st Language 4

The basic objective of language learning is to develop language skills – hearing, speaking, reading, and writing. But of late it has been observed that examinations have become marks oriented neglecting the very basic purpose of learning a language. Therefore the design of the question paper in First Language English for the year 2019-20 has been changed.

With a view to discourage the method of writing answers by memorised learning the marks allotted to the objective of remembering have been reduced. The number of objective type questions has been reduced with the intention of avoiding the malpractice of mass copying during the examinations as well as to give more importance to the writing skill. The increase in the number of descriptive (long) answer questions gives scope to the students to express themselves, thus developing creative thinking and writing. Therefore the total number of questions has been reduced from fifty to forty five.

It is a known fact that the teaching/ learning process by the teachers and the students as well as the parents has been carried on based solely on the intention of scoring marks(marks oriented). Therefore fixing the unit wise allotment of marks has been discarded to avoid teaching/leaming processes based on certain units only. A student should learn to give equal importance to all the units. Therefore theme based allotment of marks has been introduced, i.e., as Prose, Poetry, Supplementary Reading, Grammar and Vocabulary, and Composition. No specified marks are given to any unit.

Changing the previous pattern of A, B and C divisions in the question paper, the questions are arranged according to the ascending order of the marks allotted to the questions to bring uniformity in the pattern of the question paper. Direct questions from the text book given at the end of the lesson or poem are avoided so as to instigate the student to read the content in detail thus aiding thought provoking process. The difficulty level of the questions has been retained the same as the previous years to benefit all categories (types) of students.

Karnataka SSLC 3rd Language English Model Question Paper Design

The pattern of question paper for the year 2019-2020 for class 10 has been modified in order to cater to the students of Third Language English, to express their ideas in more of descriptive manner. This will help the learners in acquiring vocabulary and its usage in a creative expression. This pattern of question paper allows the students to think creatively beyond the text and gives scope for language learning, which helps them in their future levels. Hence the weightage for long answers questions that demand the answers in descriptive manner has been raised and the weightage for the objective forms of question has been minimized.

The following table gives the comparative view of number of questions in different types.

Karnataka SSLC 3rd Language English Model Question Paper Design 1

The total number of questions is restricted to 38. 1 mark, 3 marks and one five marks questions have been newly introduced. Essay writing is introduced in order to cater to creative writing. The topics for essay would be covered based on the themes which students have already familiar with. Though the reading comprehension that is passage, has four sub questions, it is considered as one question of four marks. The grammar and vocabulary items would be covered from the content. The difficulty level is maintained as, easy 30%, average 50% and difficulty level is 20%.

MCQ, VSA and SA questions take 40% anddescriptivev questions f. e. 3 marks, 4 marks and 5 marks questions take 60% of the question paper. The unit wise weightage has been squashed and weightage is fixed on themes, i.e. prose, poetry, supplementary reader, grammar and vocabulary, and composition. The question paper is designed in such a way that it leads from easy to difficult level. The marks are graded orderly, starting from 1 mark question to 5 marks question. Blueprint will not be provided by the board.

Weightage for the content, Objectives and Difficulty level is mentioned. Teachers are free to prepare their own question paper based on these weightages.

The table below gives the picture of weightage to content domain with respect to marks.

Karnataka SSLC 3rd Language English Model Question Paper Design 2

The costs of essential goods are ascending huge amounts at a time. This is bringing a lot of hardship to the people. Now, such price – hike is totally unexpected and this is the gravest problem which our country faces now. The worst affected people are those who live below the poverty line. The main reason for this price-rise is the artificial scarcity of goods made by dishonest businessman.

Kerala Syllabus SSLC Class 10 English Notes Unit - 2 Chapter 1 Project Tiger (Memoir)

Chapter 1 project tiger (memoir).

One of the best filmmakers of the 20th century is largely acknowledged as being Satyajit Ray, an Indian Bengali. Ray started his career as a commercial artist after being born in Calcutta to a prominent Bengali family in the arts and literature. After meeting French director Jean Renoir and viewing Vittorio De Sica's 1948 Italian film Nealealist Bicycle Thieves while visiting London, he became interested in filmmaking. Ray has helmed 36 movies, spanning documentaries, shorts, and movies. In addition, he works as a writer, publisher, illustrator, composer, graphic designer, and cinema critic. She has authored many novels and short tales, many of them are geared at young readers. In his mythology, Feluda, a professional, and Professor Shonku, a writer of science fiction, are well-known figures. Oxford University conferred honorary degrees on him. Pather Panchali, Ray's debut film from 1955, garnered eleven international accolades, including the inaugural Best Human Document Award at the Cannes Film Festival in 1956. The movie spawned the Apu Trilogy, together with Aparajito (1956) and Apur Sansar (1959). In addition to writing the script, acting it out, scoring points, and editing it, Ray also created the credit articles and promotional materials. Ray has received multiple prestigious honours for his work, including the Academy Honorary Award in 1992, 32 Indian National Cinema Accolades, the Golden Lion, Golden Bear, and two Silver Bears. He has also won countless other awards at international film festivals and award ceremonies. In 1992, the Indian government bestowed upon him the Bharat Ratna, the highest human accolade.

Kerala SSLC English Summary Project Tiger (Memoir)

Nobody can compete with Hollywood when it comes to producing animal-themed movies, according to Satyajith Ray. Ray remembers seeing Rin-tin-tin and Lassie, two movies about dogs, when he was a kid. These canines were well-known animal celebrities with better acting than most people. Their earnings were equivalent to those of a genuine TV star. He learned that Hollywood handled its animal performers with the utmost regard. The performers are often present while the studio's lights are put up. When it comes to well-known celebrities, stand-ins handle this responsibility. He saw that the animal actors had stand-ins when he watched a movie being made in the Disney Studio twenty years ago.
Training ravens to act in a movie takes a lot of work. Even this, though, was feasible in Hollywood; for instance, hundreds of trained ravens and other birds were used in Alfred Hitchcock's movie "Birds." Many movies have also been shot in Bombay, Madras, and Calcutta using trained horses, dogs, and elephants. Ray asserts that taught animals may deliver good results if one is persistent enough. On the other hand, working with tigers is not an easy task, but Ray had to do it for his movie Goopy Gyne Bagha Bync. The protagonists Goopy and Bagha confront a tiger in a jungle during one scene in the movie Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne, and they freeze in fear. Ray secured a trained tiger and its trainer, Mr. Thorat, from the Bharat Circus Company with the intention of hiring a trained tiger for this sequence. In order to shoot the scene, Mr. Thorat and his crew travelled to a bamboo grove close to the village of Notun Gram with two tigers. They wrapped one around the tiger's neck and wore a collar made of tiger hide around it. They attached a short, sturdy wire to the tiger's collar and a ground-anchored iron rod on the other end. In order to let the tiger go, Mr. Thorath threw open the cage door. The tiger sprang out of the cage and fiercely assaulted the spectators. The tiger's unexpected behaviour shocked everyone. The trainer, Mr. Thorat, was unable to control it, but gradually it calmed down.
They took the required pictures, but subsequently found that the camera was broken and the pictures were too dark. All of their efforts were in futile since the first shot they took did not connect. The target required to be fired at. The shots needed to be reshot, so this time they travelled to Boral village to find a different bamboo grove. There, too, the tiger rushed at the spectators before rapidly calming down. All the rounds were fired by Ray and his crew. This time, the camera worked well, producing excellent shots.

Write a letter to the Commissioner, Mangaluru City Corporation regarding the water scarcity in your area. Your letter should include: – problems you face – reasons for the water scarcity – solutions to end the water scarcity.

29/1A, II Cross Mallikatte Mangaluru – 575 008

14 March 2019

The Commissioner Mangaluru City Corporation Mangaluru 575 001.

Dear Sir, Sub.: Water scarcity

Mallikatte is well within the limits of Mangaluru City Corporation and hence I hope the complaints that I place before you will have their place on your high priority list. The people of Mallikatte are going through acute water scarcity. They do not even have enough water to meet their basic necessities. Considering the fact that it is examination time for students, the corporation should try and make life as comfortable as possible for the students.

Callous attitude of citizens who waste a lot of water and the indifference of authorities concerned to the leakage in the main reservoir of water are the cause of water scarcity.

The short-term solution for the problem could be the supply of water through tankers. Long-term plans should include plugging the water wastage and employing more scientific methods of water storage.

While permanent solutions are always better, we the citizens of Mallikatte request you to come up with ad hoc arrangements to end the water crisis in our area immediately. Thank you,

Yours faithfully, A concerned citizen

The roads are very bad in your locality. This has caused many problems. Write a complaint to The Commissioner, BBMP, Bengaluru, about this problem.

6271, Palm Grove Miller’s Road Cox Town Bengaluru-45.

3 June 2019

The Commissioner BBMP Bengaluru.

Dear Sir, Sub.: Request for road repair.

I am a resident of Cox Town, Bengaluru. I wish to bring to your notice the poor condition of the roads in our area.

Almost all the roads in our area have developed deep ditches. It is very difficult to drive, whatever might be the means of conveyance. During rains in particular, water collects in the ditches. It continues to stagnate there unless it gets dried by the sun. These ditches consequently have become breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

The matter has been brought to the notice of the local ward office but no action has been taken so far.

I request you to resolve the matter at the earliest. Thank you.

Yours faithfully, Sd. (XXXXXXXXX)

Write a letter to the President, Municipal Corporation of your town, about the poor condition of the drainage system in your locality. Request him to take immediate remedial steps.

Srinivas Adiga 56-B Darshan Apartments Sirsi 581 401

20 April 2019

The President Town Municipal Corporation Sirsi.

Dear Sir, As a concerned citizen I deem it my duty to bring to your notice the poor drainage system in our locality.

In the past one year not a single repair work has taken place in our locality as far as the drainage system is concerned and it points to the negligent attitude of the department concerned. Let me also add that last year we lodged a minimum of fourteen complaints which seem to have fallen on deaf ears. Some of the open pipes and manholes not only cause traffic hazards but are also dangerous to the lives of the pedestrians. Moreover, the dirty smell has led to swarms of mosquitoes and the place has become a haven for pigs and other animals, all causing health problems.

The problem needs to be addressed immediately. We are given to understand that the budgetary allocation is not enough to take up the repair work. 250 residents have come forward to share half of the expenditure. Hope you will take note of the point that we have come forward with this proposal despite the fact that we are all tax payers and are entitled to proper infrastructural facilities. We urge you to give directives to begin the maintenance and repair work immediately. Thank you,

Yours faithfully Srinivas Adiga

Write a letter to your friend describing a place of historical importance you have visited recently.

K.R. Nagar Udupi 19 January 2019

Dear Sukumar, I have received your letter. Sorry for the delay in replying. In fact, I got to read your letter only yesterday because till yesterday I was in Goa.

You know, the desire to visit Goa is a compulsive one with most. The government also has made the experience a pleasant one for tourists by making available accommodation that suits the pockets of every class of people. But, my interest in Goa is as a historically important place. If we see the influence of the British predominantly everywhere else in India, in Goa – it’s the Portuguese influence. The Portuguese at first came to Goa as traders, then as tourists, later settled as rulers enamoured by the beauty of the place. The Portuguese way of life is reflected in Goa even now. But, we must remember that Goa is put on the world map for its ancient churches like the Basilica of Bom Jesus in Old Goa where the remains of St. Francis Xavier are preserved, the church of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception at Panjim and the Mangeshi temple at Ponda.

What I liked the best about Goa is that despite being multi-lingual and multi-cultural, peace-loving people of Goa have always maintained communal harmony. Don’t miss the chance of visiting Goa if an opportunity comes your way. With best wishes

Yours affectionately Kiran

Write a letter to your friend telling him about a book you have read recently.

Palghat 5 June 2019

Dear Anitha, I have just put down Arundhathi Roy’s ‘God of Small Things’ and I have an urge to share my excitement with someone. Since you are a voracious reader, I’m sure that you have read the book and whatever I say will make sense to you.

Since the novel is a Booker Prize winner I expected it to be good, but it turned out to be even better. The ease with which Roy writes shows that Indian Writing in English has come of age. Since I am from Kerala, the setting of the novel had a greater charm for me. Even when Roy comes up with shocking details, it is clear that she does it to highlight how bizarre reality can be and not at all with the intention of coming out as a daring novelist. All in all I have fallen in love with her style.

What about you? Have you read any book recently? Do write to me when time permits.

Love Anjali

Write a letter to the Editor, The Hindu, about accidents caused by rash driving of vehicles in your town.

XXX “Priyadarshini” 2nd Block, Jayanagar Bengaluru.

27 July 2019

The Editor The Hindu Bengaluru.

Dear Sir, Enclosed please find my views on the rash driving of vehicles in Bengaluru. I am of the opinion that there should be awareness programmes regarding this and as the first measure towards this I have put down my views. I request you to publish the same in your esteemed daily. Thank you.

Yours faithfully, XXX

Driving licence is given to people who exhibit their ability to control a vehicle, following all the traffic rules. But, the rash driving that is seen in every part of the city now-a-days makes me wonder whether 75% of the drivers deserve the licence at all! Driving is not just an act. It is also a tact. It has both physical and psychological aspects to it. None of us can think of ourselves as the most powerful beings the minute we are behind a wheel. We must remember that rash driving jeopardises not only the life of the driver but also of a whole lot of innocent people. Rash driving should be dealt with very stringently and heavy fine should be imposed on the defaulters. None can play with safety.

Write a letter to the editor of a newspaper complaining about the inconvenience caused by vendors on pavements.

XXX No. 32, First floor Ivory Tower Apartments New Thippasandra Bengaluru.

The Editor Times of India Bengaluru.

Dear Sir, Enclosed please find my views on the inconvenience caused by vendors on pavements in Marathahalli. I am of the opinion that there should be awareness programmes regarding this and as the first measure towards this I have put down my views. I request you to publish the same in your esteemed daily. Thank you.

Yours faithfully, Sd/- XXX

There seems to be no pavement at Marathahalli. Moreover, there seems to be not even a road at Marathahalli. If the pavements are illegally occupied by the vendors, the roads are filled with people bargaining and dealing with the vendors. In addition, the vendors dump their waste by the side of the road and since there is no garbage collection system, the whole area stinks. The authorities concerned have all along turned a deaf ear to the complaints of the residents of the area. I hope they will wake up at least now and make the vendors vacate the pavements.

Write a letter to the Editor of a newspaper complaining about the menace of stray dogs in your locality.

XXX No. 157, “Mathrushree” III Block, Jayanagar Bengaluru – 560 011

2 June 2019

The Editor The Indian Express Bengaluru.

Dear Sir, Enclosed please find my views on the menace caused by stray dogs in our locality. I request you to publish the same in your esteemed daily. I do hope the authorities will wake up to the problem before it is too late. Thank you.

As a resident of Jayanagar III block I would like to bring to the notice of the authorities concerned, the intolerable nuisance caused in our area by stray dogs. They are so numerous that they strike one as constituting a whole legion. Alike during day and night, we encounter them at every turn both on the main road as well as in the cross roads. They literally fall on us, barking ferociously. Women and children appear to be their particular target of attack. Young boys and girls returning from school and housewives engaged in their respective errands, are frightened out of their wits as a result. Rabies, as you know, is a deadly malady, the cure for which is incredibly painful. Such being the case, I earnestly call upon the authorities to take necessary measures for putting an end to this alarming state of affairs by capturing all stray dogs infesting our locality and doing away with them.

Dear Kavitha, It’s such a long time since we have corresponded with each other. I suppose both of us were caught up in our world of assignments and tests. I think we must take some time off to catch up with each other.

On the 18th of this month, I’ll be celebrating my birthday at Ocean Pearl with a few of my friends and relatives. As it’s my 15th birthday, my parents want to make it very special for me. As you are a special friend, I invite you to be with us. The party starts at 6 p.m. and will end at 9 p.m. with dinner. I promise you that it will be fun. My sister has kept a number of party games ready. You can be a lucky winner too.

I’ll be very happy if you can make it with your family. Please inform Mom and Dad that I’ll be disappointed if they don’t make it. One last word – please don’t get any gifts. Your presence will be my biggest present. Hope you won’t disappoint me. I’ll be grateful if you could drop a line confirming your presence by the 16th. Love and best wishes.

21 May 2019

Dear Karan, Hope this letter finds you in the best of health and fine spirits. Hope you have received my previous letter. How come you have not replied? Are you very busy?

My first term exams and assignments are over. My school is known for its discipline. So we finish everything according to the schedule. The teachers are also disciplinarians. However, they are approachable and help us in every way. That is why I’m very happy in my new school.

I’m not very happy with the food served in the hostel though. It’s very spicy and I find it very difficult to adjust. Often I end up eating cornflakes. The best part about my school is the playground. We also have basketball and tennis courts. I play basketball whenever I’m free.

I can’t say the same about our library. It’s an old, dingy set-up in dire need of modernization. We have complained to the HM and he has promised us that the library would be renovated next year.

How is your school? Are you happy in your new school? Do write a few lines in reply if time permits…

Warm regards Jeevan

Write a letter to the Editor column of any newspaper focusing on the problem of irregularity of buses to your area. Clues are given below: Buses do not come in time – inconvenience to daily commuters – bring it to the notice of the higher authorities.

Suresh Kumar 33, Gokula Road Vijayanagara Badavane Bengaluru 560 105

12 March 2019

The Editor The Times of India Bengaluru Edition

Dear Sir, Enclosed please find a letter of complaint. I request you to publish it in your esteemed daily so that the authorities concerned will be quick in taking action. Till now whatever attempts We have made to get help have fallen on deaf ears. We hope that with the letter being published in your prestigious newspaper, the authorities will wake up and act.

Sir, We are the residents of Vijayanagara Badavane. For the past eight months we have faced terrible problems with regard to. bus service to our locality. Earlier we had eight buses plying from and to our locality, to and from other points of importance. But, in June last year, for no reason at all the authorities reduced the number to four. Earlier if we had buses at intervals of 15 minutes, now we don’t get a bus in even 30 minutes. This has put working people and school going children to great hardship. The next bus terminus is five kilometers away and it’s impossible to go to that point to catch buses.

We have repeatedly written letters and even met the authorities to solve the problem, but no one seems to be bothered. We are all tax payers and we expect at least basic conveniences to be extended to us. If we are not given a hearing, we may have to think of taking the extreme step of going on hunger strike. I hope the authorities concerned will not test our patience further.

XXX Vijayanagara Badavane

Yours faithfully, Suresh Kumar

Your Best College Essay

Maybe you love to write, or maybe you don’t. Either way, there’s a chance that the thought of writing your college essay is making you sweat. No need for nerves! We’re here to give you the important details on how to make the process as anxiety-free as possible.

student's hands typing on a laptop in class

What's the College Essay?

When we say “The College Essay” (capitalization for emphasis – say it out loud with the capitals and you’ll know what we mean) we’re talking about the 550-650 word essay required by most colleges and universities. Prompts for this essay can be found on the college’s website, the Common Application, or the Coalition Application. We’re not talking about the many smaller supplemental essays you might need to write in order to apply to college. Not all institutions require the essay, but most colleges and universities that are at least semi-selective do.

How do I get started?

Look for the prompts on whatever application you’re using to apply to schools (almost all of the time – with a few notable exceptions – this is the Common Application). If one of them calls out to you, awesome! You can jump right in and start to brainstorm. If none of them are giving you the right vibes, don’t worry. They’re so broad that almost anything you write can fit into one of the prompts after you’re done. Working backwards like this is totally fine and can be really useful!

What if I have writer's block?

You aren’t alone. Staring at a blank Google Doc and thinking about how this is the one chance to tell an admissions officer your story can make you freeze. Thinking about some of these questions might help you find the right topic:

  • What is something about you that people have pointed out as distinctive?
  • If you had to pick three words to describe yourself, what would they be? What are things you’ve done that demonstrate these qualities?
  • What’s something about you that has changed over your years in high school? How or why did it change?
  • What’s something you like most about yourself?
  • What’s something you love so much that you lose track of the rest of the world while you do it?

If you’re still stuck on a topic, ask your family members, friends, or other trusted adults: what’s something they always think about when they think about you? What’s something they think you should be proud of? They might help you find something about yourself that you wouldn’t have surfaced on your own.

How do I grab my reader's attention?

It’s no secret that admissions officers are reading dozens – and sometimes hundreds – of essays every day. That can feel like a lot of pressure to stand out. But if you try to write the most unique essay in the world, it might end up seeming forced if it’s not genuinely you. So, what’s there to do? Our advice: start your essay with a story. Tell the reader about something you’ve done, complete with sensory details, and maybe even dialogue. Then, in the second paragraph, back up and tell us why this story is important and what it tells them about you and the theme of the essay.

THE WORD LIMIT IS SO LIMITING. HOW DO I TELL A COLLEGE MY WHOLE LIFE STORY IN 650 WORDS?

Don’t! Don’t try to tell an admissions officer about everything you’ve loved and done since you were a child. Instead, pick one or two things about yourself that you’re hoping to get across and stick to those. They’ll see the rest on the activities section of your application.

I'M STUCK ON THE CONCLUSION. HELP?

If you can’t think of another way to end the essay, talk about how the qualities you’ve discussed in your essays have prepared you for college. Try to wrap up with a sentence that refers back to the story you told in your first paragraph, if you took that route.

SHOULD I PROOFREAD MY ESSAY?

YES, proofread the essay, and have a trusted adult proofread it as well. Know that any suggestions they give you are coming from a good place, but make sure they aren’t writing your essay for you or putting it into their own voice. Admissions officers want to hear the voice of you, the applicant. Before you submit your essay anywhere, our number one advice is to read it out loud to yourself. When you read out loud you’ll catch small errors you may not have noticed before, and hear sentences that aren’t quite right.

ANY OTHER ADVICE?

Be yourself. If you’re not a naturally serious person, don’t force formality. If you’re the comedian in your friend group, go ahead and be funny. But ultimately, write as your authentic (and grammatically correct) self and trust the process.

And remember, thousands of other students your age are faced with this same essay writing task, right now. You can do it!
