While there is an increasing interest in Augmented Reality (AR) technologies in Primary and Secondary (K-12) Education, its application in Higher Education (HE) is still an emerging trend. This study reports findings from a systematic mapping review, based on a total of forty-five (n = 45) articles published in international peer-reviewed journals from 2010 to 2020, after evaluating the use of AR applications that support Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects' learning in HE settings. This review's results highlighted the lack of research across the STEM spectrum, especially in the Technology and Mathematics subfields, as well as the scarcity of location-based and markerless AR applications. Furthermore, three augmentation techniques, suitable for STEM learning, were identified and analysed: augmentation of laboratory specialised equipment, physical objects and course handbooks or sheets. The main contribution of this article is a taxonomy of instructional models and the discussion of applied instructional strategies and techniques in STEM fields focused on HE settings. In addition, we provide visualisations of the present state of the area, which aim at encouraging and scaffolding educators' efforts based on specific classification criteria to develop AR experiences and conduct further research to enhance STEM learning.

Augmented reality (AR) is an emerging technology with the potential to transform learning. By digitally adding or removing information from the physical world, AR creates a sense that real and virtual objects coexist, and can enhance people's interactions both with each other and with objects in the world. Most museum implementations of AR have been in the realms of art and history. Using examples from across formal and informal settings, this article illustrates the learning affordances of AR for museums that aim to communicate concepts related to human health. These topics often present spatiotemporal challenges for learning, but can be made more accessible to learners when contextualized within personally, socially, and culturally relevant contexts. After briefly reviewing research on learning with AR, the article examines how museum designers might leverage AR's capacity for spatial and temporal representation, narrative and interactivity, real-time personalized scaffolds, and collaboration, to create meaningful learning experiences on medicine and human biology. The article ends with a discussion of issues related to the use of AR in museums, and thoughts on future research.

The Extended Reality (XR) technologies like Mixed Reality (MR) are expanding the physical world with improvements to the real environment. While this expansion affects the daily habits of people, it is also affecting the scope of architecture. As Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Mixed Reality becoming popular and ubiquitous, the content of architectural studies is broadened with extended realities into virtual worlds. In 1965, Ivan Sutherland mentioned virtual worlds in his research called “The Ultimate Display” by saying “The screen is a window through which one sees a virtual world. The challenge is to make that world look real, act real, sound real, feel real”. Today in 2018, the developed technologies provide many opportunities to engage virtual worlds not just via a screen, also with haptic devices, goggles, projectors, and many others. Nevertheless, the question is how it is possible to take advantage of virtual worlds and make the quality of life in the physical world better. This study explores spatial interface design and development for Mixed Reality, to help autistic people with sensory difficulties by making the spaces customizable and interactive to improve their daily lives. In the scope of the study, along with the various resources on Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and MR technology, existing interface designs of applications for autistic people are examined. After the examination, the results are compared, and the spatial interface design is proposed accordingly. A prototype of the interface is tested on 12 autistic kids between the ages of 6-16 to observe their reactions to the HoloLens device. The initial results are shared in this study, and the future of spatial interface design and development for autistic people is discussed further. In the end, an open-source spatial interface toolkit named “My Ho Me” is proposed to be implemented into the MR applications that assist autistic people with sensory difficulties.

Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR)

The rapid development in technology in recent years has brought people closer to what digital devices can offer in our imagination: turning everything into digital their digital versions, including reality. Thanks to that, now there are two technological inventions that can make that happens. Those inventions are called Virtual Reality, which is often abbreviated as VR, and Augmented Reality, which is often abbreviated as AR.

What is virtual and augmented reality?

Since ancient times, people usually give name to their inventions based on what those inventions do or represent. It is the same with virtual reality and augmented reality. As their names suggest, they both have something to do with creating a new reality. However, the differences in their names, which are the noun adjectives in their names that both explain the same noun: reality, indicate that although both inventions have something to do with creating a new reality, they surely have different methods in the processes.

To put it simple, virtual reality is a technology where a VR device creates a new reality from scratch and brings the device user to the reality while almost cutting him/her from the real world. On the other hand, augmented reality is a technology where an AR device, which can be in the form of our regular smartphones, creates a new reality from materials taken from the real world, which are usually taken using a phone camera.

However, AR is not like VR, which almost cuts the user from the real world due to the use of a pair of headsets and the VR device itself that completely blocks the user’s vision, because AR does not require the user to put a pair of headsets and the device, which is usually a smartphone or tablet, does not completely blocks the user’s vision at all.

Why vr is better than ar.

Based on the explanation above, it can be said that virtual reality creates a completely different reality for the user while augmented reality only does half of the job or even less. So, it is safe to assume that VR is much better than AR in terms of creating a new reality and bringing the user to it.

However, if the user does not want to really separate him/herself from the real world due to certain reasons, then AR is the more suitable option for him/her. So, the decision to use VR or AR depends on the interests and needs of the user, but still, in terms of technology, VR is absolutely better than AR.

What is the future of AR and VR?

If we talk about the potentials of augmented reality and virtual reality in the future, it can be said that both technologies have promising futures. Slowly but surely, both technologies have become more and more common in our daily life, especially AR because AR uses devices like our regular smartphones. It is just like how smartphones were first introduced to the public.

Smartphones were quite expensive, sophisticated, and considered to be far superior compared to feature phones back then. However, now smartphones have become quite common in our society and can be bought starting from a very affordable price.

What are some applications of AR and VR?

Every time a new technology appears, it has to have its application in real life. In fact, most of new technologies appear due to problems that demand solutions from the new technologies. Both augmented reality and virtual reality appear due to the demands of making a digital reality for many purposes. So, it should not be too hard to find the applications of AR and VR in real life.

Even, many people may not notice that the features in their smartphones that they use every day are categorized as AR. One of the applications of AR that we can find in our daily life is photo or video filter. By using photo or video filters, we have altered or augmented the reality that has been take by our smartphone camera, so that the result of the filtered photo or video deserves to be called an AR. Such filters are now quite common in our society because anyone who accesses social media can use the filters.

Of course, that is not the only application of AR and VR. There are many other significant applications of AR and VR besides photo or video filters. Those applications include the applications in video games, medical exams, engineering, such as simulation of a building construction, project explanation, and so on.

Virtual reality and augmented reality in education

Many people may still think that both augmented reality and virtual reality are only for gaming needs due to the many uses of the technologies in that field. However, in fact, AR and VR have been widely used in education. There are several examples of the uses of the technologies in education, such as the use of AR technology in a microbiology class to see and explain the physical forms of cells and other parts of organisms.

This is quite helpful because if we just use a microscope to observe cells, then we can only see the cells that are being observed and we have to go through the trouble of taking the cells and setting the microscope every time we want to observe them.

Meanwhile, if we use AR technology in the microbiology class, we can see the cells that are being explained in more details in 3D. Not only that, we can also see many kinds of cells from various organisms and we do not have to go through the trouble of preparing the cells and microscope for that.

As for virtual reality, it can even give a better vision to students than what augmented reality can give regarding the materials being studied. However, it seems that only high-budget schools or colleges that have applied VR in education due to the relatively expensive price of a VR device.

That is only one example of VR and AR in education, so that there are many other examples out there, such as the use in explaining our solar system in an astronomy class, the use in explaining atoms in chemistry class, and so on.

What is Google’s AR and VR?

As one of the leading companies in technology, Google has launched its new product called Google’s AR and VR. As explained above, augmented reality and virtual reality create new reality to help and ease our life with their implementation. So, Google uses the new technologies to help bridge digital world and physical world.

Google AR and VR utilizes the camera of the user’s smartphone and provide the user with information he/she needs, such as the name of the street, navigation, simulation, and so on. So, by using Google’s AR and VR, its user will be able to obtain information that can be very helpful for him/her.

During the Los Angeles MWC 2019 for Sprint’s VIP visitors, we augmented a physical model of a 1.5 mile autonomous vehicle test track to demonstrate 5G capabilities for self driving cars, drones, smart signal intersections and light poles. Read the full client use case .

For example, during the Future of Health presentation for Anthem, a leading health care company, we simulated a body scan and extracted vital sign data like the heartbeat from the user and then displayed them as a diagnostic. Even though it was a pure simulation, over half the users experiencing it believed we were showing their actual heart rate.

First person narratives deployed in AR will emotionally touch the user, generating compassion and a deep understanding of your message. This will resonate for a long time after the presentation is over.

How do I start using augmented reality presentations?

Most presentation are still built from scratch using Unity3D, Maya, Blender and all the tools needed to create games or animated movies.

With emerging tech like augmented reality , businesses can leverage a new way to connect with customers. Creating content that is exciting to users makes for an unforgettable experience that is sure to get them talking and coming back for more.

Best augmented reality examples

AR leaves a little to science and a lot to the imagination. Finding the best augmented reality software is the easy part when you know what you’re building.

What is augmented reality software?

Augmented reality software works with mobile devices, allowing virtual objects to be projected into the real world. This allows users to interact with and manipulate the digital 3D models within a physical space.

The following 13 examples of augmented reality experiences are sure to get you on your way to dreaming up your next big venture.

This augmented reality sandbox developed by UC Davis uses projection-based AR to create a more hands-on learning environment. This innovation uses a Microsoft Kinect 3D camera, visualization software, and a projector. The sandbox simulates a map in real-time to allow users to create topography models by moving and shaping real sand inside the box.

The different elevations are shown by color, along with contour lines. Even virtual water can be incorporated into the sandbox. When a hand is placed above the augmented reality sandbox in line with the projector, it simulates a cloud. Rain starts to fall and fill up the low spots, just as it would in a real landscape.

2. Furniture

Augmented reality furniture and other in-home uses are becoming more and more popular as well-known brands like IKEA jump on board. The technology is giving customers the ability to virtually see the furniture in their homes before making a purchasing decision. With this augmented reality furniture tech, the user can even snap a picture of it in the room.

As the advertisement above shows, all you have to do is simply place the physical catalog where you want to put your new sofa or armchair. This is what’s called marker-based AR, which uses a physical marker (the catalog) to trigger the digital content.

3. Business cards

Handing your business card over to a contact is all about first impressions. With augmented reality business cards, you can stand out in their mind. Plus, you can only fit so much into that tiny business card design .

Virtual business cards allow room for more information – like your personal portfolio site. Some even let you implement a voice-over to go along with the digital content.

4. Out of home advertising

This augmented reality experience doesn’t require users to take the extra step to pull out their camera. Pepsi went for shock factor and they got it with this campaign.

Pepsi’s “Unbelievable” ad campaign captured the attention of patrons and kept them engaged. How many advertisements can you say that about?

I would definitely miss my bus.

5. Packaging

Augmented reality can be used to tell a story about your brand. And, ideally, it gets people talking about it. When 19 Crimes wine hit the shelves, the physical label itself was already jarring to the average customer just perusing the aisles.

The video went viral when a video online showed the talking characters on the bottle. Using the brand’s app, each wine variation features a different criminal with their own unique story. As a true crime junkie and a fan of wine, I’ll definitely be trying them all. They certainly know their target audience.

Imagine seeing what the food looks like before actually ordering it. With an augmented reality menu, you can swipe through the entire selection before deciding what to have.

This application of AR technology opens up a lot of avenues for similar businesses in the service industry to go the extra mile for their customers. For example, nail salons could show their clients color and style options before having to make a choice.

Kids already have wild imaginations, but now stories really can jump off the pages. There are a number of augmented reality children’s books that offer virtual content on top of each page. All of the virtual animation and content is predetermined per page.

But, what if what was on the page changed? With coloring books, there are no rules – except, of course, color inside the lines. This technology by Disney shows the little Picasso what they are drawing in 3D by synthesizing exactly what is on the paper in real-time.

This augmented reality exhibit at the Smithsonian shows museum-goers what they’ve never seen before – dinosaurs! This AR exhibit brings the extinct back to life to put visitors at the center of it all.

We’ve all read about dinosaurs and seen drawings of them. But aside from Jurassic Park, we’ve obviously never seen one, let alone interacted with one.

9. Newspaper

Augmented reality newspapers are another example of a unique application of this emerging technology. We’re constantly bombarded with new content to consume and, to be honest, it’s usually six of one, half dozen of the other. This augmented reality newspaper is changing that.

Using an AR app, users can see the images as videos, including the advertisements at the bottom of the page.

10. Tourism

Your phone is your most dependable tour guide as you search for restaurants and translating your questions to locals. There are a lot of different ways that augmented reality can be used in the travel industry. Google enhanced its popular translate tool by taking removing a step for its users. Say goodbye to copy paste, copy paste .

With Google Translate’s Instant Camera, users can translate the world around them in real-time. Plus, you can save them to your device so that you don’t have to keep translating the same signs over and over again.

11. Architecture

Blueprints give you a general idea of what you can expect in a new space and 3D models are used to convey that message even further. When AR is used in architecture, these two concepts can be combined.

In this video, we see the physical building plans with digital structures built right on top. There’s even a timeline portion of this presentation that shows what floors of the building will be completed by a set date.

12. Military

The US Army is experimenting with augmented reality technology to give soldiers better spatial awareness. The AR glasses are wirelessly connected to a tablet that soldiers wear around their waist.

This simulation looks a lot like a video game with the maps pulled up, but it’s expected to be incredibly helpful when soldiers are unfamiliar with their surroundings. The technology is not available to the troops yet, but it’s coming soon.

Another retail application of augmented reality, this mirror lets users virtually try on clothes. While I don’t know that the physical process trying things on will be totally eliminated, it certainly cuts down on the number of items you take to the fitting room.

It’s safe to say that Cher Horowitz’s closet outfit matching program from the popular 1995 movie Clueless is getting an upgrade.

The possibilities are endless

As these 13 examples have shown you, there are limitless applications for augmented reality tech just waiting to be uncovered. My advice: push the boundaries.

Limitation of AR • Objects in the real and virtual worlds have to be properly aligned with respect to each other. • Some applications demand accurate registration., e.g., virtual surgery where error can be fatal!! • AR requires much more accurate registration than VR.

Conclusion • From this session it can be concluded that AR is far behind than virtual reality in maturity. • May be it take too much time to applied in regular life because of cost. • Accuracy is required in success of AR..that is quit difficult. • But still AR has a great future as it promises better interaction with real and virtual world which is previously unimaginable.
