‘Holiday’ is such a fascinating word that catches the fancy of each one, be it she or he, everybody finds it bliss to go for a holiday. We may be from any walk of life but we quite relate to this term ‘holiday’ equally. Professional people love holidays and children pray for the same. When it comes to holidays every grown-up and the working person acts like a child, desperate to relish the days of holidays. With the odds, if the holiday is cancelled, they will be sad and grumble as a child.  

Holidays are rightly known as pressure busters for the people. The normal routine of life requires a few days to relax. The holidays are always welcomed and awaited by all. Holidays give us immense peace and we cherish the memories of these well-spent days for the rest of our lives. Holidays help us in the following ways:

Mental Peace:  

We can derive mental harmony and mental calmness by staying at home and also by spending the holiday time with friends and family. 

Social Activities:  

The students in their holidays can also include the social activities that they do with their loved ones. 

Family Trip:  

We enjoy a family trip or a family excursion during these holidays.

This time, in the winters, our small family planned for a holiday in the hills of Darjeeling. This was a much-needed break for the members of this family to remain quite busy in their daily scheduled life. They remain occupied in the strictly disciplined life of either work or study. My little sister and I study in grades 8 and 4, respectively, my father is a deputy manager in his reputed company, and my mother is a working lady and also a housewife. So, you can guess how our life will be in the strict realms of schedule. Thus, this time, my father and I decided on a short trip to the hills. 

We started our journey on the 1st of December, 2019. On the way, we played a variety of games. The view over the hills was quite pleasant to watch. When we were on the top of the summits, we looked down at our town, which seemed like a toy town; how small that was from the top! 

We clicked pretty snaps of the places, clicked pictures of us, of the local residents there, after which we went to a famous restaurant to eat our afternoon meal. We had the most delightful dumplings and noodles, which were cooked and served to us when still on steam. 

As dusk dawned on us, the jungles over the hills seemed to tell us another story of spirits and supernaturals. My sister and I were quite fantasized about this view. We preferred to keep our eyes shut till we reached our destination. It was half-past 8 when we reached the hotel where we would spend the night. The hotel staff was kind people who welcomed us with great warmth. We freshened up and went downstairs to watch their cultural program. The tribes danced to the music of one of their traditional songs, which was quite amazing for us to watch. After this, dinner was served. The dinner was quite rich and they served us in a sophisticated manner. After the tiring day, we decided to call it off and went to sleep.

The next day, we went hiking in the mountains. When we reached the peak of the mountains, it was a very delightful view. We decided to camp for the rest of the day there in the hills. The scenario and being on the lap of nature were quite peaceful and serene.   

After the trip, we came down to our town and normalized our lives. 

This trip had ushered a sense of great peace and calmness in my mind, which was to be instilled. The memories of the trip were to remain fresh in my mind like the fresh droplets on the leaves.

Holidays have joyous feelings related to them. My favorite holiday is Christmas. I love this holiday because it comes in December, which is also my birth month. There are a lot of exciting things we do during Christmas. We start making preparations for Christmas early before the month starts. 

This year, my friends and I made snowmen with snow outside our houses. My dad put up all the lights in the interior and exterior of the house. It was looking really bright and pretty. My mom made a lot of food, cakes, and snacks, and ate with our family. My cousins from the US came over to spend time with us. 

Our whole group of family and friends ate and talked and laughed with each other, sitting cozily near the fireplace, with the Christmas tree towering over us. I had a lot of fun. It is one of my best experiences and I hope to feel it again.

The number of paragraphs would depend on the number of words the essay is expected to cover.

Whatever the target word-count, ensure that your essay is vivid and engaging by using sensory details. It’s simple. Just describe what you saw, heard, smelled, tasted, and felt during each experience.

Then reflect on the significance or impact of each event or activity. How did it make you feel? What did you learn from it? Did it change your perspective on anything? And so on.

This is where you end your essay. A good conclusion would provide a brief summary of the key points of your essay, including the lessons you learned.

You can tell whether the holiday experience met your expectations, and how you feel about it even at the point of penning down your essay. Then state whether you plan to do anything in the future drawing inspiration from your holiday experience.

My Relaxing Holiday 200 Words

My last holiday was amazing! I did not travel to any new or interesting location, but I had a lot of fun staying home. I took time to enjoy early morning sleep every day. This alone felt like a treat after waking up early for school the entire term.

In the afternoons, I went outside to play with my friends. We played the soccer ball around in the park, and would enjoy pretending to famous athletes.

Sometimes during the holiday, it would rain. And when that happened, I just stayed inside and got cozy. I got a good book and devoured it with a mug of hot chocolate by my side. I also liked watching funny movies with my family and munching on popcorn.

In some evenings, we had barbecues in the backyard. We grilled hamburgers and hotdogs, while Dad told us stories about when he was a kid. I don’t think that anything can feel more special than spending so much time together.

Although I did not travel anywhere, my holiday was full of fun and relaxation. I feel recharged and ready to go back to school now!

My Last Holiday Adventure 250 Words

Since I have been spending my holidays, none had been as enjoyable as the last one. When we vacated last term, I spent two weeks at home in order to assist my parents in farm work. After this, I left for Onitsha in order to visit some places of interest.

I visited the modern and popular Niger bridge which links Onitsha and Asaba, Mid-West. I also visited the famous Onitsha Main Market. It has no rival in comparison in West Africa just as Ibadan Liberty Stadium has no comparison in West Africa. When I was being taken round the great Onitsha Main Market by a friend, I observed that traders in their respective stalls felt at home. Some of them tuned in their radio sets. They were happy.

I spent one week at Onitsha and departed for Enugu. When I was at Enugu I visited the Eastern Nigeria Parliament, and I saw Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe’s Statue just close to the house of Assembly. I also visited Enugu Airport and several other places of interest. I spent five days in Enugu and departed for Lagos by a train. “Lagos Limited”, and that was my first time of entering train. When I reached Lagos, I hardly believed that it was a town in Nigeria. It was very beautiful indeed just like London.

When I was in Lagos, I went to the House of Representatives, the Senate, National Stadium, Air- port, Tinubu Square and other places of interest.

I spent 5 days in Lagos and returned home to resume School. I wrote a story on all my observations in the journey.

My Last Holiday Essay 300 Words

Last summer, I went on a trip that I will not easily forget. This is because it meant much more to me than just a vacation; rather, my perception was changed.

I had never been in Thailand before the holiday but only heard of its beauty. Finally visiting the country made my holiday worthwhile. The place was so different from home! Their market was busy with many colorful items for sale and their food was so delicious. I tried several new and amazing dishes, and they were all lovely. While in Thailand, I couldn’t fail to notice how beautiful their temples are with roofs gold plated and other carvings done wonderfully.

I am an outdoor kind of person. That is why spending time in nature during my holiday made me very happy. Some days I would hike through forests while others would find me relaxing at the beach. On one fine morning, I woke up early to witness sunrise over New Zealand’s mountains. It was simply breathtaking and that made me feel alive.

Lastly, to add some holiday fun into it; i did some daring activities too. For instance, skydiving and bungee jumping were included in my itinerary. Although at first scared, it turned out pretty awesome! I learned that it’s good to challenge yourself and try new things sometimes.

Looking back on my last holiday, I feel very grateful for all the experiences I had. I discovered a lot of new things and also made new friends. Yes, the holiday is over, but the memories I made will stay with me forever.

Reflective Essay: My Favorite Holiday Memory

I’ve had many wonderful holidays, but my favorite memory is that of a few summer weeks spent in Italy when I was about 13. My mom had to go to a clinic there for treatment (nothing severe or worrisome in any way, thankfully), and we all went together as a family and took the opportunity to have a beautiful vacation as well. Why this is my favorite holiday memory is because, besides the fact that it was the first time abroad for me, it was a vacation that has broadened my perspective, taught me a lot, and helped shape a bit of who I am today.

Although we did visit many famous places in northern Italy, we stayed mostly in a little town where some friends of my parents lived. While all the renowned attractions in the country were, indeed, marvelous, nothing immersed me in the Italian culture and nothing helped me understand the locals’ Latin spirit better than my stay in this picturesque, almost magical town that many haven’t even heard of.

At 13, I was quite a shallow girl who was interested mostly in having fun with the girls – and not much else. Thanks to the holiday spent in Italy, I also discovered my passion for music, which stayed alive in me to this day and will probably stay forever. My parents’ friends had a son, Ricardo, who was a pianist. While dad had repeatedly but unsuccessfully tried to make me study an instrument (and stick to it), when I heard Ricardo play, I instantly fell in love with music and felt a great desire to learn it. Ricardo taught me the first song I ever played on the piano, a silly, playful little tune that I still know by heart. Oh, and he was my first crush, too.

Another reason why I will never forget my holiday in Italy is the short trip we took to the Italian Alps at some point. I had never seen such majestic beauty before! The snow-covered peaks, the intimidating rocks, the fresh, harsh air – what an experience! And what I remember impressed me the most was the fact that, although this was a popular touristic area, the region was incredibly clean, still “natural”, with places that seemed to never have been touched by humans. Then, the shallow teen that I was learned what a real treasure nature is and how important it is to protect it.

Finally, there’s one peculiar memory from this vacation that stuck with me for reasons that I can’t say I grasp. It’s a pineapple & cheese sandwich that they sold at the clinic my mom went to for treatment. What a simple and ingenious mix of flavors – a sheer joy for the taste buds! I think it was the first time I tasted a mix of “regular food” and exotic fruit all in one, and I believe this is what triggered in me the pleasure I know have for experimenting with flavors in my cooking and coming up with unusual dishes. Looking back on it, this simple sandwich can also be a good metaphor for how you shouldn’t overcomplicate things in life – sometimes, the simplest solution and a bit of flair or courage can bring astonishing results.

My trip to Italy helped me understand more about other cultures, allowed me to find my passion (and let’s not forget about my first crush), taught me to cherish nature and do my best to protect it, and – maybe – inspired in me the courage to experiment (or, at least, it gave me the opportunity to discover that I adore pineapple & cheese sandwiches). This is why it is my favorite holiday memory.

Tricky Trials Update official release date

Today I’ve got news that’s as smashing as the mace, as exciting as the trial chambers, and as rewarding as the vault. The Tricky Trials Update’s official release date is June 13 , which means in just a few short weeks you can play with all the new update features on both Minecraft: Java Edition and Bedrock Edition! 

Discover the trial chambers 

Trial chambers are a new structure releasing as part of the update that are filled with traps, tricks, and treasures! No-one knows who built these sprawling copper structures (or if they do, they didn’t tell me!), but we do know what you’ll find inside them: a slew of new challenges, mobs to do battle with, rewards to claim, and blocks to build with. 

Meet the mobs that lurk there 

Wander down the oxidized corridors of the trial chambers far enough and you’re sure to see a trial spawner light up, spilling out hordes of hostile mobs! If you’re lucky, you might even meet two new hostile mobs that call the trial chambers home: the breeze and the bogged. 

The breeze is a mob that not only boasts envious eyebrows, but also a powerful projectile attack that can send its foes flying. This mischievous mob loves to leap dizzying circles around players and is hard to pin down with arrows. If you want to best a breeze, you’ll have to be quick on your feet, and even quicker with your sword-slashing! 

Keep your eyes peeled for the bogged too, a poisonous skeleton that’s as happy in the trial chambers as it is in muddy Overworld swamps. Clad in rags and covered in moss and mushrooms ( cute! ), this fearsome foe will do everything in its poisonous power to make your trial as challenging as possible. Can someone please remind me to add milk to my trial chamber preparation list? 

Adventure solo or with friends 

With danger lurking around every corner, and chambers filled with traps, it might be a good idea to team up and venture into the trial chambers with friends. (Not sure how to get the gang together? Find out how to play multiplayer on either Bedrock Edition or Java Edition ).  

Sure, the challenges might scale in chaotic-ness (definitely a word) with more players, and the fights will still prove a challenge, but you know what they say! Friends that stay together, slay together all get rewards from the vault! 

Reap the rewards

The vault is a special new block added as part of the Tricky Trials Update that rewards every player with precious, precious loot in exchange for a trial key! Unlike chests, which can be emptied by one player in a Realm (usually one of my brothers…), the vault rewards every player in your adventuring party that unlocks it with a trial key once!

But what do you need to do to clasp your blocky hands around that key?  It’s quite straightforward: defeat all the mobs from the spawner. Doesn’t sound too hard, does it? In fact, if you’re sitting there thinking it sounds easy, then fear not! This update has something for you, too. 

Level up your challenge

If you’re the kind of person that sees a bottle labelled “Ominous” and thinks “yum!”, then you’re going to really love ominous trials. The new ominous trial feature is part of a larger system of opt-in challenges that also include village raids – perfect for players that like to sprinkle their Overworld adventures with a healthy dose of extra peril . 

This doesn’t look too ominous, does it? Apart from the skulls. And the fire...

Ominous trial spawners spawn tougher enemies with better armor. 

These enemies might even carry enchanted weapons – and will be harder to defeat! 

To trigger an ominous trial or a village raid, you need to find an ominous bottle and drink from it to gain the optimistically titled Bad Omen effect . Ominous bottles can be dropped by raid captains or looted from vaults. Then it’s up to you which ominous path you wish to take next: run into a village to trigger an illager raid ( sorry !) or venture into the trial chambers to transform your Bad Omen effect into a Trial Omen effect and trigger an ominous trial. 

Ominous trials are like regular trials, only harder. With the Trial Omen in effect, you’ll find that the trial spawners around you will start spewing out tougher mobs (with even tougher armor!) as well as potions and projectiles. Battle on until the spawner resets and you might be rewarded for your bravery with an ominous trial key ! These unlock ominous vaults (there’s a theme in the naming here), which reward you with rarer loot – like the heavy core, a component used to craft the new mace!  

Smash your foes, or leap to victory 

The mace is a new weapon coming as part of the Tricky Trials Update , and it’s smashing. Crafted using a breeze rod (dropped by breezes) and a heavy core (a new item only found in ominous vaults), you’ll feel more powerful than a charged creeper with this new weapon in your hand. Use its smash attack while falling and knock back your enemies. The best part is you’ll feel like a blocky superhero while doing it – because the longer you fall, the stronger the mace’s smash. 

The mace also has three unique enchantments to make it even more powerful. The Density enchantment lets you deal even more damage when dropping down and smashing your foes, while the Breach enchantment lets your mace penetrate the armor of even the strongest hostile mobs (gold-clad zombies, I’m coming for you!). You can even evoke the breeze’s leaping abilities with the Wind Charge enchantment, which launches you high in the air after landing a successful smash attack (making it easier for you to chain your attacks!).

Time your fall-attack just right to knockback enemies with your mace!

If you prefer flying to fighting, then you’ll want to defeat a breeze, and get your hands on the wind charge ! The wind charge launches a powerful gust of air that'll not only deal damage on contact, but also send nearby foes flying. If that wasn't enough reason to battle a breeze, did you know you can even use the knockback from the wind charge to boost your jumping ability? Wheeee !

Bring a piece of the trial chambers home with you 

What’s a holiday into a hostile-mob filled trial chamber without a few souvenirs? Decorate your base (or your armor) with a memory of your trickiest trial chamber experience with the new armor trims, pottery sherds, or banners coming as part of the update. 

Which is your favorite new banner: flow or guster?

Let the loot f low  with the new flow armor trim!

Become the storm with the bolt  armor trim!

Whether you want to show everyone you meet that you’ve bested the breeze by sporting the flow or bolt amor trims (found as rewards in the vault!), or you want to declare yourself as being firmly on #TeamBreeze by covering your base in the guster banner, there are more ways than ever to bring a piece of your adventure home with you. Personally I’m excited to update my decorated pot collection with not one, not two, but three new pottery sherds! 

Unwind from your challenge with auto-crafting 

After all that excitement you’ll likely have an inventory full of new items and more than a few maces to craft. That’s where the crafter comes in, because this powerful new block uses redstone for automated crafting.  

The crafter

Pick a recipe, add stacks of ingredients, supply a redstone pulse, and tada! In just a few ticks, your auto-crafted item will pop out into the Minecraft world.

Build with new decorative blocks 

Alongside the copper bulb, a redstone-toggled light source that dims and brightens depending on its oxidization levels , there are also a host of new tuff and copper blocks to use for building that long-overdue base extension.

Wax lyrical about copper thanks to the copper trapdoor, copper door, copper grate, and chiseled copper block, which can all oxidize, plus be waxed and scraped. Tuff blocks now also have a family of craftable blocks, so you can chisel them, polish them, and turn them into stairs, slabs, bricks, or walls! Bring a bit of the trial chambers home with you – or better yet, relocate your base into the trial chambers themselves!* 

*Caution: your neighbors might be hostile. 

Decorate your base with 20 new paintings 

There are also twenty new paintings coming to Minecraft as part of the Tricky Trials update. These include five by Mojang Studios’ very own Game Artist Sarah Boeving, and 15 by Kristoffer Zetterstand, the artist behind such Minecraft classics as “Skull on Fire” and “Pigscene”!

I’m going to extend my base to build an art gallery , just for these new paintings! I’ll have a sea-themed room, and a baroque-themed room, and a skeleton-themed room! Perhaps I’ll even make it really realistic, and set it on fire build the walls with bone! Wait, does that mean I have to take a trip to the Nether? That went so badly last time...

I Supervised New York City Judges. Juan Merchan Put On a Master Class in the Trump Trial.

I spent almost 13 years as a judge in Brooklyn, Queens and the Bronx. I supervised judges presiding over a wide spectrum of cases, dealing with complex legal issues, angry victims, difficult defendants and intense media scrutiny. The job can at times be thankless and frustrating.

But for all the cases I saw, I never encountered anything remotely as challenging as what Justice Juan Merchan faced in his Manhattan courtroom while presiding over the first criminal trial of a former president. And since Donald Trump was found guilty on 34 counts, Justice Merchan has come under further vicious attack.

As a retiree, I was able to attend each day of the Trump trial. What I saw was a master class in what a judge should be — how one can serve fairly and impartially for the prosecution and the defense, and above all remain a pillar for the rule of law in America.

Since the indictment over the cover-up of hush-money payments was issued last year, Justice Merchan has been subjected to an unrelenting pressure campaign. The defendant, Mr. Trump, and his supporters viciously attacked the judge and his family in deeply personal terms. Most judges strive to maintain their composure under the greatest of stress, but few succeed — yet Justice Merchan remained cool, calm and collected at every step of the trial.

As a supervising judge, I always emphasized the importance of maintaining control to those under my charge. That is how a judge ensures that all defendants — especially the most difficult ones — get a fair trial. That is how everyone is treated with courtesy and how rulings are evenhanded and fair. In this area, Justice Merchan excelled.

He issued a gag order carefully designed to protect witnesses, jurors, prosecutors and court staff, but left himself out of the order. He did this to ensure that the defendant’s right to harshly criticize the proceedings was protected even though he must have known that he would become an even greater target of Mr. Trump’s ire. When Mr. Trump repeatedly violated the order, Justice Merchan bent over backward to avoid sending the defendant to jail, despite a clear legal justification to do so.

It is hard for me to think of another defendant acting out in the same manner who would have received such lenient treatment. But special times — and special trials — sometimes call for special measures. A judge needs to know when to apply such measures.

In the course of the trial, he maintained his composure. Defense attorneys received many favorable rulings, and in some instances (like during the testimony of Stormy Daniels) he even made and sustained objections on behalf of the defense during direct examination. On other occasions, when Mr. Trump engaged in particularly objectionable behavior (like muttering curses about a testifying witness), he calmly called one of the defense attorneys to the bench to put a stop to the inappropriate behavior. Other judges might have called out the behavior directly, embarrassing Mr. Trump in front of the jury, which could be seen as prejudicial to the defendant.

I can’t think of one time when the judge interjected himself unnecessarily against either prosecution or defense, but not everyone agrees with that. In a recent New York Post opinion piece , for example, the lawyer Alan Dershowitz referred to “one of the most remarkable wrongheaded biases I have ever seen” regarding Justice Merchan’s handling of the defense witness Robert Costello’s behavior.

Maintaining order and fairness in a courtroom is not bias; it is how justice is served, and it is no easy thing to obtain.

Since the verdict, Republicans have unleashed further attacks against Justice Merchan. One Arizona Republican running for a House seat called Justice Merchan “a corrupt and biased political operative” and said that he “must be disbarred and prosecuted.”

Let’s be clear, these attacks are not really about Justice Merchan. They are direct attacks on our entire system of justice. As President Biden said in remarks concerning this case on Friday afternoon, they are reckless, dangerous and irresponsible.

However, I do agree with Mr. Dershowitz’s position in that same opinion essay that we should televise trials in New York State, so all could see for themselves what I saw every day and what he saw on the day he was there. For most Americans who followed the case, all they were able to see has come from media gaggles outside the courtroom.

Justice Merchan had to set a boundary between Mr. Trump’s raucous but protected speech (barring transgressions of the gag order) and the fact-based evidentiary and back-and-forth questioning that is central to a trial. By guarding that boundary, he protected the integrity of the rule of law.

I am aware of the deep divisions in our country as to the wisdom and strength of this case. But I am certain that Americans were well served by Justice Merchan.

As the summer ended, I felt both happy and sad. I was excited to go back to school and see my friends, but I knew I would miss the beach, my grandparents, and the carefree days of summer. However, I returned home with a heart full of joy, a mind full of new knowledge, and a promise to myself to make the next summer holiday just as amazing. Summer holidays are a magical time, and I can’t wait for the next one!

Peter Dutton slams Labor's non-citizen military recruitment plans, Shorten grilled on claims NDIS money spent on holidays, drugs and cars — as it happened

NDIS Minister Bill Shorten has been pressed in Question Time over revelations from the NDIS integrity chief that unscrupulous providers or participants attempted to use funds on items such as drugs, holidays or new cars.

Meanwhile, the ADF is eyeing off citizens of foreign nations to swell its ranks from July this year.

Sally Sitou weighs in on Shorten speechwriter saga

Labor MP Sally Sitou is back!

Greg Jennett asks her about the news a speechwriter in Bill Shorten's office (but was contracted to Services Australia) who received a $600,000 contract over two years.

Sitou repeated much of the same lines hit by others today: it was a decision taken by Services Australia.

But she did add this:

"Would I have paid that amount for a speechwriter? No. But we're in a tight job market and this is the outcome."

Hamer 'fantastic' but Zoe McKenzie says redistribution was 'significant'

Labor's Sally Sitou and Liberal MP Zoe McKenzie are on the panel this afternoon.

But a division in the House cut the panel short and Sitou had to dash off to vote in the chamber.

Ever the professional, Greg Jennett presses on.

He asks about Josh Frydenberg flirting with the idea or returning to federal politics (despite a candidate already being preselected in his former seat of Kooyong).

That thought bubble lasted all for 30 hours before the former treasurer ruled a return out.

The saga came after the AEC proposed a redistribution that abolished Labor held Higgins and pushed voters into the surrounding electorates.

McKenzie says it was a "significant" redistribution and the Victorian division will look at whether preselection should be reopened.

She describes Amelia Hamer as a "fantastic candidate" but adds she doesn't want Frydenberg lost from public life.

"But when and how that happens, that's Josh's choice and we will see," the Liberal backbencher says.

Australia should be 'cautious' about opening up ADF ranks

Let's return quickly to the ADF's effort to recruit non-citizens.

Labor frontbencher Matt Keogh did his best to clean up the confusion about who exactly would be eligible to serve in our armed forces.

But Shadow Defence Minister Andrew Hastie tells Afternoon Briefing he doesn't think Keogh did a good enough job.

"We want clarity," he says.

"I don't think they've cleaned this up … they shouldn't treat this as poorly as they have today."

Hastie says Australia should be "cautious" about opening up ADF ranks to over countries.

Negotiations continue over 'Greater Sunrise' gas deal

Timor-Leste is in negotiations with Australia over the possible development of the 'Greater Sunrise' LNG field.

It's been reported that a significant new offer has been made by Australia's lead negotiator, former Victorian premier Steve Bracks, to fast track the project.

The Albanese government isn't saying much about the deal publicly, but President José Ramos-Horta was on Afternoon Briefing this afternoon.

He says what he knows about the offer so far has come from the media.

"However, from what I've seen in the media, I cannot really say how that would impact on the thinking of the Prime Minister [Xanana Gusmao]," he says. "We do not want a pipeline for the sake of it, but because a pipeline coming to Timor-Leste would generate much more benefits, employment and the secondary, primary industries that will create much more job and the wealth for Timor-Leste."

Ramos-Horta was asked if he thought Australia's concerns about China's influence was a "motivating factor" in its revised offer.

"It could be that one motivation on the part of Australia is to provide greater incentive to Timor-Leste so that we don't have to look at other options," he says, adding one of the other options is China. "But we don't view China with the same lens as Australia."

Breaking: Critical minerals company targeted in suspected cyber attack

An Australian critical minerals company has been targeted in a suspected cyber attack just hours after the federal treasurer ordered Chinese investors be removed.

Defence correspondent Andrew Greene has this breaking story for you.

A suspected cyber criminal group has claimed online to have successfully stolen sensitive data from Northern Minerals, which operates the Browns Range mine in Western Australia's Kimberley region. A spokesperson for the home affairs minister has told the ABC it's aware of the incident and is engaging with the company.

Will the ADF look at other foreign nationals next?

Back to Matt Keogh for a moment.

Afternoon Briefing host Greg Jennett asks when the ADF will allow citizens in nations beyond the Five Eyes and the Pacific into its ranks.

Keogh says that would "evolve over time".

He adds permanent residents have already "made a commitment to Australia" but they would also need to meet all the "normal security requirements" that would allow them to serve in the ADF.

How criminals manipulated NDIS participants and stole their money

Today's award for lowest of the low goes to: criminals tricking NDIS participants to use their money for drugs, holidays and cars.

In one case a participant would meet the fraudulent provider at the ATM, the provider would withdraw cash and provide that cash to the participant to get her to source illicit substances

Bill Shorten   — the minister responsible for the scheme — has been facing questions about this from his opposition counterpart Michael Sukkar .

Shorten says the scheme is dealing with more than 500 compliance investigations, but laid part of the blame at the feet of the former government.

"These issues of fraud did not start yesterday... clearly anyone claiming items which are not allowed under the scheme, it is illegal.

"The one difference between us and those people opposite is we are doing something about fixing up the scheme, you did nothing."

As I'm sure you can imagine, it went down a treat with those on the opposition benches.

Keogh says ADF recruitment change 'very clear' despite confusion

Veterans' Affairs Minister Matt Keogh is now on Afternoon Briefing doing his best effort to clear up the confusion about the government's ADF recruitment changes.

He's told Greg Jennett that it's all actually "very clear".

  To quickly sum it up for you:

• NZ citizens (if permanent residents) can apply to join from July 1
• Citizens of Five Eyes (if permanent residents) can apply from January 1
• Permanent residents who are citizens of Pacific nations will be next to be considered, but no set date on this one.  

"This is a crossing the Rubicon type moment, this is opening up something that we haven't done in the Australian Defence Force before, and so we need to open up that in a staged way," he said.

The confusion kicked off because Keogh told reporters this morning the January 1 date would also apply to "other countries".

All clear? I'll leave that up to you to decide.

Giles weighing up whether to cancel visa of Mokbel associate

A 51-year-old Maltese-born man with ties to Melbourne’s notorious Mokbel family has had his visa reinstated by the Administrative Appeals Tribunal.

The AAT reinstated 51-year-old Kevin Farrugia 's visa on Monday, despite the Maltese-born man's extensive criminal history.

'It's a dog's breakfast': Dutton calls for clarity on ADF recruitment

Opposition leader Peter Dutton is up now alongside   Andrew Hastie and Phil Thompson.  

It's safe to say they aren't fans of government's plan to allow ADF to accept recruits from overseas, especially after the confusion around who exactly would be eligible.

Here's a bit of what Dutton had to say:

"It's a dog's breakfast … what we see at the moment is a government in chaos and they’re lurching from one disaster to the next," he said. "Minister Keogh is out there telling you that it's going to apply to every nation. "They're now saying, oh, well, we're winding it back in. It'll only apply to some nations, but maybe not others. Maybe some people from Five Eyes. "We're up to version 4 or 5 ,and we're not even up to the nightly news."

Government housing agency spending millions on consultants

Up now at estimates is Housing Australia, the housing body which runs the government's Housing Australia Future Fund (HAFF), among other things.

Senator David Pocock   is quizzing them on why they spent $24 million on external consultants in the last year alone, which as he points out is more than the government gave to foodbanks over the same period ($21 million).

Yet Housing Australia has 131 of its own staff, including 27 on executive salaries and a salary of $526,906 for its CEO Nathan Dal Bon.

The basic answer was: to help with setting up new capabilities.

The new HAFF, a $10 billion investment fund set up to build social and affordable housing, will see at least $500 million a year go out the door to housing providers to build and operate houses.

The Senate heard a little more detail about how that will work: providers will get annual grants lasting 25 years to operate the housing. 673 prospective providers have applied in the first round, but the money has not yet gone out the door.

When will the first house be built? "It's hard to say," Dal Bon says.

There's a bit going on

Opposition leader Peter Dutton will also be standing up shortly.

A little bit of confusion about the ADF announcement today

So before we get into the rest of the day's antics, I wanted to step you through something that's caused a bit of confusion up here in the ABC office.

Earlier today, Veterans' Affairs Minister Matt Keogh was spruiking the plan to open up the ADF ranks to foreign citizens.

This is what he told reporters in the hallways this morning.

"The key thing in here is that from 1 July we'll be opening this up to permanent residents from New Zealand that have been here for a year and then from 1 January it will open up to Five Eyes countries and permanent residents from other countries."

But hang on a second. That's different to what Defence Minister Richard Marles just told the House in QT.

"From the 1st of July with those conditions in place around having been a permanent resident for a year … and the appropriate security checks, if you are from New Zealand, you'll be able to join the Defence Force. "From the 1st of January, that will be extended to other Five Eyes countries. In the future we are having an eye to the Pacific."

Keogh will be   up on Afternoon Briefing shortly where hopefully he'll be able to clear up the confusion.

What's the go with Labor's religious discrimination promise?

It's been a while since a question was asked about the Religious Discrimination Bill. But before I get into it, some context.  

Back in March, the PM shelved his election promise to overhaul the nation's religious discrimination laws unless it received bipartisan support.

But negotiations with the Coalition have stalled.

So enter Greens MP Stephen Bates. He asks the Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus if he'd be willing to work with the Greens to pass the bill.

Dreyfus says he wants to get this done, albeit not with the Greens.

"It is in the interests of all Australians that there be an enduring solution that strengthens protections for all Australians, including students, teachers and people of faith," he says. "And that's why bipartisan support is so essential. We want to get this done. We want unity, not division. "The prime minister has reached out to the leader of the opposition to get this done, and I continue to look forward to working with the opposition to progress legislation, if that is possible."

Legal funding for frontline gendered violence services

Independent Zoe Daniel has lobbed a question to the attorney-general about legal help for women fleeing violent situations.

An independent review of legal service funding found that current levels were insufficient to meet Australia's legal assistance needs, especially help for marginalised groups.

Daniel brought up the National Legal Assistance Partnership review, released publicly last week, which recommended funding for women’s legal services be separated from the general community legal centres stream.

Mark Dreyfus's office had the report for three months and is still considering the review.

Daniel asked if the government would adopt the recommendation for a dedicated funding stream and Dreyfus didn't directly answer the question.

"I know the importance of the work that they do for women fleeing violence, women's legal services provide advice and support to keep them from harm," he says.

So no answer on whether the government will implement that particular recommendation, however, it has allotted $44.1 million to ensure the partnership remains for another year.

"The government understands absolutely that this will not fix all of the issues currently plaguing the sector, but it is an acknowledgement of the resource and workforce issues. It's intended to directly assist with wage parity issues that have beset the sector for some time," he says.

The review now goes to the states and territories to agree on what the future of the legal service funding model looks like.

What is the government doing to support people with complex mental health conditions?

Wentworth MP Allegra Spender is up next. She represents the area in Sydney's eastern suburbs that takes in Bondi Junction.

"The senseless attack at Bondi Junction on April 13 left six people dead and traumatised ... the perpetrator experienced severe mental health problems and had fallen through the cracks of our mental health system," she begins.

Spender says she wants to know what the government is doing to support people with the "most complex conditions" and "fix our broken mental health system".

Health Minister Mark Butler says that many people with complex conditions are supported by the NDIS but "too many fall outside that system".

He adds states are currently undertaking an unmet needs analysis and it would be a "big focus" of the foundational supports process that is currently underway with the states.

Labor cheers as Angus Taylor asks treasurer a question

It's a bit of a lame joke really. It basically boils down to the fact the shadow minister rarely lobs a question directly at Jim Chalmers.  

Back to the question . Angus Taylor asks about the latest monthly inflation data.

Chalmers uses it as an opportunity to whack the Coalition's economic management.

Taylor isn't happy with that and asks the Speaker to bring him back to the question. Chalmers, however, isn't fazed.

"Without a hint of self-awareness, the shadow treasurer talks about something that sunk without a trace," the treasurer hit back.

"The least relevant person in the parliament wants to get up and talk about relevance."
