Why Is Youth Empowerment Important?
At the core of youth empowerment is the belief that young people are capable of incredible things. When young people have exposure to inspiring ideas and opportunities and the tools to build their confidence – they can take on anything and everything.
An empowered young person recognizes their capabilities, self-determination and worth. They feel comfortable trying new things. They have the confidence to take risks and are aware that failure is a step toward progress, not a sign to give up. They don’t use the opinions of others as their guideposts in life. They stand up for their values. And they know they have built a foundation of self-empowerment to rely on in times of struggle or when they are feeling lost and need to recalibrate.
Youth empowerment is incredibly important – it gives kids and teens the courage to believe in themselves, to not be swayed by the opinions of others, and to go after their dreams.
While some kids and teens are born with an innate sense of “what if” and the courage to act on it, most look to the world around them to gain the ideas, excitement and skills to explore their potential and test the waters of their capabilities. Encouragement and opportunities go a long way in helping a kid or teen come out of their shell and take on new experiences, and a caring mentor – parent, caregiver, teacher or youth development provider – can be a powerful ally in youth empowerment.
Here are a few ways you can help empower a young person in your life:
Help kids and teens explore their interests and potential. Getting curious is the first step to feeling empowered. Read books and watch movies together about a variety of pursuits and careers and see where your kid’s interests are. Ask questions like “Can you see yourself doing something like this?” When they take on a hobby, explore different ways they can build on this interest and deepen confidence in their abilities.
Give them the space and trust to practice autonomy. Kids and teens are natural contributors, but often don’t feel adults expect them to do things well or participate at all. Offer safe, supportive opportunities for your kid to be autonomous and make clear your expectations for their contributions – whether that’s a toddler learning to take their plate to the dishwasher or empowering a teenager to decorate their own space.
Speak with honesty. Knowledge is power, and when we are open, direct and honest with young people, this not only helps expand their understanding of the world around them, but it builds their own self-awareness. Equipped with information to be successful, they are more likely to see the big picture and make smarter decisions, while not sweating the small stuff.
Trust their ability as leaders. From working on school projects to managing a household chore to leading community service events, in youth-led efforts, let young people own the trajectory of the assignment, from planning to execution. You can always be a safety net for when they make mistakes or need to be redirected but give them the space to try it their way first. Afterwards, ask for their feedback on what went right and what could be improved.
When youth are empowered, they feel confident and capable. They become active contributors and collaborators, excited to explore their impact on the world around them.

Empowering Youth for Sustainable Development
International Youth Day is a global occasion that celebrates the contributions of young individuals and recognizes their potential to create a more sustainable and inclusive world. As the challenges posed by environmental degradation become more pressing, the need for equipping young people with the tools to promote sustainable development has never been greater. One of the key ways to achieve this is through media and information literacy (MIL), which empowers youth with the knowledge and critical thinking skills necessary to navigate the complex landscape of environmental issues and develop green skills that contribute to a more sustainable future.
As we celebrate International Youth Day, it is imperative to recognize the role of media and information literacy in nurturing green skills among young individuals. By equipping youth with the ability to critically engage with media content and make informed decisions, we empower them to become leaders in sustainable development. Media and information literacy not only enhances their understanding of environmental issues but also enables them to drive change, promote eco-friendly practices, and contribute to a greener and more sustainable future for generations to come.
Green skills encompass a range of competencies and knowledge that are geared towards environmental sustainability. These skills enable individuals to contribute to eco-friendly practices, develop innovative solutions for environmental challenges, and participate actively in the transition to a greener and more sustainable economy. Green skills cover areas such as renewable energy, waste reduction, conservation, sustainable agriculture, and more. By acquiring these skills, young people can play a pivotal role in driving sustainable development and mitigating the impacts of climate change. Media and information literacy (MIL) serves as a catalyst for the development and promotion of green skills among the youth. In a world inundated with information, misinformation, and rapidly evolving technologies, MIL equips young individuals with the ability to critically assess and analyse media content, discern credible sources, and make informed decisions. MIL empowers them to sift through the noise, identify reliable information, and gain a deep understanding of environmental issues and solutions.
MIL enables young people to access a wealth of information on environmental conservation, climate change, and sustainable practices. Through various media channels, including websites, documentaries, podcasts, and social media, they can learn about successful green initiatives, cutting-edge technologies, and inspiring stories of environmental stewardship. By developing media and information literacy skills, youth can amplify their impact by sharing accurate and impactful information with their peers, communities, and the wider world.
Media and information literacy encourages critical thinking and problem-solving skills, which are essential for tackling complex environmental challenges. Young people who possess MIL skills can analyse data, evaluate policy proposals, and think creatively about sustainable solutions. By critically engaging with information, they can contribute to informed discussions and decision-making processes related to environmental issues, advocating for policies that prioritize sustainability. MIL empowers young individuals to become agents of change by fostering innovation and entrepreneurship. Armed with accurate information and critical thinking abilities, youth can identify gaps in the market for sustainable products and services. They can develop and launch green start-ups, creating solutions that address environmental challenges while generating economic opportunities. MIL enables them to navigate the business landscape, connect with mentors, and access resources that support their entrepreneurial endeavours.
UNESCO is the leading organization promoting media and information literacy. Media and information literacy empowers people to think critically about information and use of digital tools. It helps people make informed choices about how they participate in peace building, equality, freedom of expression, dialogue, access to information, and sustainable development. UNESCO supports and champions media and information literacy initiatives across the globe.

Youth empowerment
Today, the world is home to 1.8 billion young people, the largest generation of youth in history. They are more interconnected than ever before, and many are leading political, social, and economic change in their communities and societies. At the same time, young people face significant challenges and risks, disproportionately carried by girls and young women in many parts of the world. In many countries, youth exclusion is strongly evident, often crossing with other forms of marginalization linked to gender, location, culture and/or community, undermining development and social cohesion. In many cases, social norms continue to sideline youth, treating political and economic participation as the prerogative of older people. While a few national policy frameworks have started to pay deliberate attention to youth concerns, much more can be done. In all countries, youth need to be full participants in shaping and implementing the choices that affect them.
UNDP recognizes that young people can be positive agents of change and represent an immense and valuable potential that governments and institutions should nurture and invest in. UNDP seeks to enhance those aspects required for vibrant democratic governance, including by advancing initiatives focused on youth empowerment and engagement in peace and development processes.
Because youth are a significant force for sustainable development and key agents for social change, economic growth, and technological innovation, UNDP promotes and supports their empowerment. This is done by promoting fully inclusive governance, increasing youth participation in decision-making, ramping up youth employment, engaging youth in peacebuilding and gender equality programmes, and ensuring youth are a part of SDG integration, implementation, and monitoring.
UNDP also supports the capacity development of young people and youth-led organizations and the development of youth caucuses in government, parliament, and other bodies to be able to engage in dialogue and influence public decision-making processes. We engage with relevant stakeholders through outreach, advocacy, thought leadership, global networks, and policy debates, particularly in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals.

Point of Contact
Youth development is centered on developing the capacity of the individual youth. Youth empowerment is focused on creating greater community change that, in its methods, relies on the development of individual capacity. Therefore organizations operating with a youth development framework are not addressing social inequities, but rather developing the individual within an unjust society and not changing the source of the problem.
While various researchers have demonstrated that the theory is sound, there is little record of the implementation, effectiveness, and accountability of youth empowerment. Some researchers say the reason for this lack of evidence is simple: It is difficult to implement a theory, one with an intrinsic challenge to include the voice, ideas, and experiences of young people at the tables where important decisions are made. A further difficulty: youth empowerment implementation requires young people to be involved not only in the day-to-day programming decisions but also in organizational governance. It is only through this immersion that communities will be able to promote the development of all youth and adults.

YOUTH EMPOWERMENT & INCLUSION “Big Picture” approach to Human Resource Development as a major contemporary issue in IT applications ‘Gbenga Sesan Nigeria’s Information Technology Youth Ambassador www.gbengasesan.com | [email protected] 7th Nigeria Computer Society International Conference International Conference Centre, Abuja, NIGERIA. June 20, 2003
INTRODUCTION • The New Economy is driven by ICTs • Africa’s sleeping giant is awake but we need greater networking among Government, Private Sector, Academia and Civil Society to translate statements and action plans to action • Discussing Human Resource Development with a focus on the youth is an important issue within the global Information Society space – and Nigeria belongs here
Equipping the Next Generation • Young people are extending, animating and redefining the perimeters of IT applications • Empowering and involving young people in research and industry processes will complete the “big picture” of HRD in IT application • There is a present wave of “IT thirst”sweeping across Nigerian higher institutions, for example • Equipping the youth is the proof of the Nigerian IT industry’s commitment to the future
To ACT or not to ACT • Events, communiqués, action plans need to be converted to actionable steps and implemented • Most institutions presently have IT-related clubs (JETS, Computer Clubs, Electronic Clubs, Departmental Associations) BUT we need a Nigerian Information Society Youth Network • NISYN will redirect the energy of Nigerian youths for national development IF a credible platform and environment is facilitated
CONCLUSION “I see a new Nigeria emerging, one that will be built on the labours of ours heroes past, hewn out of the debris of the present waste, and engineered by the strength of tomorrow’s leaders – the youth. These young men and women will adopt IT for the purpose of personal development, nation building, regional cooperation and global participation. They may be unknown today, but in the secrecy of their abode, they master the tools that will change their lives and that of the nation. They’re building the nation’s tomorrow today.”
YOUTH EMPOWERMENT & INCLUSION “Big Picture” approach to Human Resource Development as a major contemporary issue in IT applications THANK YOU ‘Gbenga Sesan Nigeria’s Information Technology Youth Ambassador www.gbengasesan.com | [email protected] 7th Nigeria Computer Society International Conference International Conference Centre, Abuja, NIGERIA. Youth empowerment
Young people must have the opportunity to lead change within their own communities. We seek ways to enable vulnerable children to understand and defend their rights.
Across the world girls suffer injustices every day simply because they are young and female. We aim to help the girls’ rights movement to grow, to take it from grassroots to global, so girls have greater control in their lives.
We encourage boys and young men to respect girls and women, and empower them to become allies to the global girls’ rights movement.
Climate change activism
Children are the least responsible for creating global climate change but will bear the brunt of its effects.
Champions of Change
Empowering girls and engage boys to identify and challenge harmful masculinities that perpetuate discrimination and inequality.
