The size of a graduation gown is determined by the wearer's height. The gown is designed to reach down to the wearer's mid calf. Height should be measured with flat shoes or barefoot - no heels.

Choral robes and tunics.

The size of a choral robe or tunic is determined by the wearer's height. The choral robe and tunic are designed to reach down to the wearer's mid calf. The size represents the back length of the robe or tunic measured in inches.

Choral Cassocks

The size of a choral cassock is determined by the wearer's height. The choral cassock is designed to reach down to the wearer's ankle. The size represents the back length of the choral cassock measured in inches.

Roman and Monastic Cassocks

The size of a cassock is determined by the wearer's height. The cassock is designed to end approximately 2" above the floor. The size represents the back length of the cassock measured in inches.

Long Sleeve Shirts

Only available in neck sizes 14½ to 17½. The sleeve length is measured from the back shoulder to the wrist.

Confirmation Gowns

The size of a confirmation gown is determined by the wearer's height. The confirmation gowns are designed to reach down to the wearer's mid calf. The size represents the back length of the confirmation gown measured in inches.

• The undergraduate's gown is black in colour, of ankle length, and with long sleeves.
• The master's gown is the same as the undergraduate's.
• The Ph.D. regalia consists of a gown, Cambridge style, of maroon silk material with front facing panel and sleeves of UBC blue with gold piping; hood, Cambridge pattern, blue silk outside and gold lining; cap, decanal bonnet, of maroon silk with gold cord and tassel.
• The Ed.D. regalia consists of a gown similar in style to that of the Ph.D. but is black in colour; hood American style with lining of light blue and with chevron of University blue, white and gold; cap, decanal bonnet of black stuff with gold cord and tassel.

The gowns, hoods and mortarboards worn by faculty and graduating students at the graduation ceremonies evolved from clothes worn by European scholars in the 12th century to authenticate degrees. The University of British Columbia has taken pride in continuing this tradition since our first ceremony in 1916.

Renting your regalia.

Rent your graduation hood and gown online in advance of your ceremonies online through the UBC Bookstore. Renting in advance provides a discounted rental rate.

The deadline to rent online is May 17, 2024.

Rent your regalia

If you have missed the online gown rental deadline, don’t panic. If you’ve missed the deadline to reserve regalia in advance, please arrive at the Student Marshaling Tent in Parking Lot M 1.5 hours before your ceremony start time. The cost to rent your regalia on-site is $75 (cash, debit or credit).

After your ceremony is over (you have about an hour after the end of your ceremony to take photos), please return your gown at the designated tent in Parking Lot M or inside the Administration Building beside the courtyard.

Pricing Details Visa, MasterCard and Visa Debit are accepted for payment method. Online: $55.00 (tax included, Visa, MasterCard and Visa Debit accepted) Onsite: $75.00 (tax included, Visa, MasterCard and Visa Debit accepted) Any students missing the rental deadline who still want to attend can rent a gown on the day of their ceremony for an additional charge. Regalia Pick-Up Instructions Students must pick up their gowns 1.5 hours prior to their ceremony start time. Pick up is located 1866 Main Mall Block B, Vancouver, BC V6T 1Z1 ( Buchanan building ). Please ensure you have your gown order number with you when you arrive, and a piece of photo ID. Regalia Return Instructions Gowns must be returned to the regalia returns TRAILER, located outside the Alumni Building on the Money and Raymond M.C. Lee Square plaza. Follow the signs from the Chan Centre to the "Alumni Graduation Reception" and look for the Bookstore trailer. Gowns MUST be returned no later than 1 hour after your ceremony concludes. Please DO NOT return your gown to where you pick it up from, and DO NOT return your gown to the Bookstore, you will be sent back to the regalia returns TRAILER outside the Bookstore.

Thank you for the custom doctoral hood. The colors matched my university's very well and, more importantly, it is a very high quality hood and it reminds me how this regalia was actually standard dress for faculty once upon a time. I purchased my gown, hood, and tam from Phinished and can imagine how these garments could be daily garb. Thank you for the care you put in to tailoring this regalia and appreciating the work we put in to Phinishing these degrees.

I ordered a gown for the University of Notre Dame - since someone had done this previously, they already had the school emblems that go on the front panels. (If you're also at ND, you'll want to order the gown with embroidery, and 8-sided tam. I believe colors are royal blue and gold). I can't verify that the gown is identical to the official one because I live elsewhere and am not attending commencement, but it looks and feels great. Way better deal than going through the university. They can be a bit slow over email, but once they respond, customer service is excellent.

These are excellent. The robe has buttons exactly where it is convenient for making everything hang properly. Love the pockets. Very fairly priced in comparison to other comparable robes (similar fabrics etc) and of comparable, if not better, quality. Regalia is a big, complicated, bulky garment - these hang nicely, the fabric feels nice, and they have nice finishing touches. Everything arrived well before graduation

Amazing job.

I was hesitant to get the custom regalia from a company other than the one contracted with the University. The new regalia is an unusual color and I specified the color on the order. It is a "olivey" shade of hunter green. Instead of contacting me when they didn't have the color, they made it in Emerald Green, which is definitely not right. Hunter green would have been close enough, but not emerald green. I had sent them pictures of the regalia as well, which was clearly not emerald. I tried to give them as much instruction as possible and they had my contact info if they had any questions. The quality of the regalia is beautiful, but I'm going to feel a bit embarrassed wearing it to commencement. At least I am faculty and won't be sitting next to numerous other people in the correct color.

I ordered a custom cap and gown set, and the finished product is beautifully crafted. They communicated well throughout the process, and shipping was fast. The order was delivered a few days early!

I am so pleased with my regalia — the materials and craft are beautiful and thoughtful. I ordered the custom regalia set for the University of North Carolina. It shipped just over a month after I ordered it. It is well-constructed, and all the details--down to the cording, braids, and embroidery--are spot on. And all for less than half the cost of the standard vendor!

I ordered a custom open design gown for my regalia for UC. The quality is beyond amazing and the gown fits perfect based of the measurements. The cap and hood are also gorgeous material and quality. I can’t wait to wear it at graduation and I’m the future!

For my hooding, I rented the official regalia, but as a new faculty member I needed my own to wear a few times a year. I’m so glad I went with PhinisheD! The regalia arrived today, and I couldn’t be more pleased. The quality is better than the official regalia—the fabric is lighter and nicer to wear, the tam is overall just nicer with an attractive tassel and an option to adjust the size, and that’s not even to mention the pockets, which are wonderful. The gown even has the embroidered badges for my university—which I wasn’t expecting from an unofficial source. I don’t know if they’re able to do it for all institutions, but it was a lovely surprise! I’m so grateful to be able to spend a bit less and get a better gown—it would be worth it at a higher price. Good quality, delivered on time

When I graduated with my PhD, my university didn’t give us the option of purchasing our regalia. I bought my regalia from PhinisheD Gown after earning a faculty position to wear to convocation and graduation ceremonies. Wearing this tam, gown, and hood feels 10x better than any other regalia I’ve worn! Oh, AND THE POCKETS ARE EVERYTHING!!! <3

Due to COVID, I didn’t get the chance to walk for my doctoral graduation. This was a gift from my parents and the custom PSU doctoral gown came out perfect! Every detail was immaculate and the fabric and embroidery was high quality. Highly recommend!

Admittedly, the ease in ordering online--and putting my other requests in a list on the comment box--made me nervous that I just donating a lot of money to just a costume. However, the surprisingly small box arrived over a week early, and I pulled out a beautiful (and unwrinkled!) gown, hood, and tam. The gown was protected in a bag and with a hanger. It wears very well--and it looks better than I thought it would. Each year, I've paid about 20% of the cost for renting regalia--I should have bought this years ago! I love love love that there are pockets!

The gown is excellent. There were facial masks in the pockets, which came as a pleasant surprise in this difficult time. Very happy.

When I received my doctoral regalia from my school I was seriously disappointed. Cheaply made and I felt after my years of hard work getting my PhD I deserved to wear something that looked as good as I felt. So, I searched the web and found Phinished Gown and read their reviews...all good, so I chose to have them make mine. They did not disappoint! Jane was attentive and made sure that I got exactly what I ordered. When I opened up the package I almost cried...well, I did when I put it on. The materials used are so beautiful and it just looks and feels so good. I can't say enough about it. So happy I chose to order from them.

Good as expected

After learning about Phinished Gown through Reddit, I emailed Jane with a tall order: could it be possible to create a gown that fits both me at 5'4" and my husband at 6'0" since we both earned our PhDs from the same institution? She guided us by providing precise measurements for each of the Phinished Gown sizes, so we ordered one and hoped for the best. They were very receptive to feedback I had when we received the proof, and they were quick to correct a miscommunication we had about the ordering process. As for the gown, it magically looks great on both of us! Regarding the match to our university's official regalia at my graduation ceremony, there were some differences in the fabric type and color of the gown, the style of the piping, and the tam's tassel. However, I much preferred the overall look and fit of our Phinished Gown set, and the differences will be negligible when my husband uses as a faculty member at a different college. The pockets are a HUGE plus, too.

Overall, I would highly recommend Phinished Gown for your regalia needs. The product is high quality and the service is exceptional. I received many compliments, and for a savings of a few hundred dollars, I did not feel like we had received a bargain product at all. I decided to purchase my regalia this year, as the rental regalia provided at my current institution for faculty/staff participating in commencement is of the generic black type, and I very much wanted to wear my alma mater's colors - but the price of the "official" regalia was far too high! I was similarly hesitant to purchase "unofficial" regalia, since it can be hard to tell how good it would come out. Phinished Gown was recommended to me by one of my old classmates, who purchased a set for her new faculty job, and said it was outstanding. So I decided to go for it, and I couldn't be happier that I did. Jane took great care at making sure to have enough photos to be able to color match the custom set with our official regalia, and it came out very close - a bit lighter in color, but I actually much prefer it. The gown is perfectly tailored and is a nice fabric texture, and as others have written, it has pockets, a great feature. I was a bit hesitant to custom order the PhD set for the University of Washington. I was concerned the quality would not be as good or that there would be slight differences. I was wrong. I received a high quality, beautiful set that is identical to what I rented when I graduated a few years ago. The packaging was professional (they include a nice cover to keep the set protected and clean). I am very impressed especially because the price cannot be beat. APPLICATION FOR GRADUATION

Students planning to graduate must submit an application regardless of whether or not they intend to participate in the scheduled ceremonies. If the request to graduate is not approved by the student’s faculty, a reapplication for the next graduation period will be required. Formal graduation takes place in May and November.

Congregation

Following program completion, degrees are awarded by UBC Senate. “Congregation” refers to the ceremony of graduation at which degrees are formally conferred by the UBC Chancellor, and official parchments (degree certificates) are provided.

The graduation ceremonies are held in the Chan Centre for the Performing Arts .  Graduands meet at the Student Marshalling Tent in Buchanan Courtyard  and  process together to the Chan Centre.

Before the Ceremony

To prepare graduands for the procession into the Chan Centre, we ask you to arrive at the Student Marshalling Tent in Buchanan Courtyard 1 hour and 30 minutes before your ceremony start time. This is the area where you will:

• Pick up your regalia, mortar board (hat), and hood. (Graduates of diploma programs will not have a hood)
• Pick up your degree parchment and reader card with your procession number , before lining up for the Procession in ascending order by processional number . [ Procession numbers will be posted throughout the tent for your reference. Please look up your number before picking up your procession card .]

There is no secure storage space available in the Student Marshaling Tent.  Whatever you bring with you into the tent, you will need to bring with you into the Chan Centre concert hall and you will need to keep these items with you throughout the ceremony.  Items can be tucked under your seat in the concert hall. It is recommended that you leave personal items such as purses and coats with your families / guests .

Procession numbers for the line will be posted throughout the tent for your reference.

The Procession

The ceremony.

Please remain seated until all graduands have been seated in the concert hall. You will then be asked to rise from your seats by the Senior Marshal on stage for the entrance of the Faculty Procession. During the ceremony, there will be several points where guests and graduands will be asked to rise and sit, as directed by the Chancellor and/or President. This is part of the ritual of the graduation ceremony, and we hope these points offer opportunities to recognize your supporters, reflect on your achievement, and congratulate your peers and graduates.

Once on stage, you will hand your procession card to the Reader, who will read out your name and degree as written. The Graduand Marshal may assist you with this. If you are a doctoral graduate, your citation will be read, and you will have the option of being hooded. As you pause in front of the Reader’s lectern and face the audience while your name is read out, a second photo will be taken of you. [PHOTO 2]

After your name is read, you will cross the stage and the President or designate will greet you and pose for a third photo with you. [PHOTO 3]. After the photo has been taken, you will continue crossing the stage, and will be greeted by your Dean and alumni representatives from your faculty. After crossing the stage, an usher will direct you back to your original seat where you will remain until the end of the ceremony.

Marshals and ushers will be on hand to provide guidance throughout the ceremony. Ceremonies vary in length from approximately 75 to 90 minutes.

The Recession

After the end of the speaking program, you will remain in your seat until instructions are given by the marshals and ushers. Graduand Marshals will organize and lead graduates in the procession out of the concert hall. We ask that you meet your friends and family at  Flag Pole Plaza  following the ceremony.

After Flag Pole Plaza, please join  alumni UBC  at the  Robert H. Lee Alumni Centre  for your graduation welcome reception and light refreshments.

Note: Regalia rental returns will be located at the UBC Bookstore . Gowns must be returned to the Bookstore no later than 1 hour after your ceremony concludes.
