What is a bibliography

A bibliography, sometimes known as a “Reference List” is a list of all of the sources you have used (whether referenced or not) in the process of researching your work. In general, a bibliography should include:

  • the authors' names
  • the titles of the works
  • the names of the publishers who published your sources and where they were published.
  • the dates your sources were published
  • the page numbers of your sources (if they are part of multi-source volumes)

When preparing your thesis, be aware of rules around using copyright restricted material in your submission. The library can advise you on these matters and in relation specifically to publishing and necessary embargoes that should be considered when you prepare your final document.

What is EndNote Online?

EndNote Online  (formerly called EndNote Web) is available to all UL staff and students. It allows you to access your EndNote library from any PC with an Internet connection, to create bibliographies in Word and to share your library with group members.

Creating an EndNote Online account

When you first access EndNote Online you  MUST Register. Please follow the instruction in the box opposite to ensure you register for EndNote Online correctly. If you do not register correctly you will not  be able to access the Harvard UL referencing style.

Once you have created your account you will be able to use EndNote from anywhere once you have a PC with Internet access.

How to Cite a Thesis/Dissertation in Chicago/Turabian

Academic theses and dissertations can be a good source of information when writing your own paper. They are usually accessed via a university’s database or a third party database, or found on the web. The main difference between a thesis and a dissertation is the degree type they are submitted for:

  • Thesis—A document submitted to earn a degree, such as a master’s degree, at a university.
  • Dissertation—A document submitted to earn an advanced degree, such as a doctorate, at a university.

This guide will show you how to create notes-bibliography style citations for theses and dissertations in a variety of formats using the 17th edition of the  Chicago Manual of Style.

In rare cases, you may need to cite a thesis or dissertation that has not yet been published. This is particularly the case if you want to cite your own work or the work of a colleague.

Theses & Dissertations

Citing a published thesis, citing an unpublished thesis, citing a thesis in online database or repository.

  • CMS 14.224: Theses and dissertations

Titles of unpublished works appear in "quotation marks"—not in italics . This treatment extends to theses and dissertations, which are otherwise cited like books.

The kind of thesis, the academic institution, and the date follow the title. Like the publication data of a book, these are enclosed in parentheses in a note but not in a bibliography.

If the document was consulted online, include a URL or, for documents retrieved from a commercial database, give the name of the database and, in parentheses, any identification number supplied or recommended by the database.

For dissertations issued on microfilm, see 14.120 . For published abstracts of dissertations, see 14.197 .

Book Consulted in an Electronic Format

To cite a book consulted online, include either a URL or the name of the database. For downloadable ebook formats, name the format; if no fixed page numbers are available, cite a section title or a chapter or other number in the note (or simply omit). For citing a place rather than a publisher for books published before 1900 (as in the Moby-Dick example below), see CMOS 14.31.

Journal articles are usually cited by volume and issue number. In a note, cite specific page numbers. In the bibliography, include the page range for the whole article. For articles consulted online, include a URL (preferably one based on a DOI; see CMOS 13.7); alternatively, list the name of the database.

Journal articles often list many authors, especially in the sciences. For works by two authors, list both in the bibliography and in a note (as in the Dittmar and Schemske example above). For three or more authors, list up to six in the bibliography; for more than six authors, list the first three, followed by “et al.” (“and others”). In a note, list only the first, followed by “et al.” Note that the bibliography entry for the Dror example below (which credits eighteen authors) includes an article ID in place of a page range; in a note, specific page numbers may be cited as shown (see CMOS 14.71 for details).

Articles from newspapers or news sites, magazines, blogs, and the like are cited similarly. Page numbers, if any, can be cited in a note but are omitted from a bibliography entry. For articles consulted online, include a URL or the name of the database.

If a more formal citation is needed, it may be styled like the examples below. If a source does not list a date of publication or revision, include an access date. Alternatively, if a publicly available archive of the content has been saved using the Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine or similar service, the link for that version may be cited.

Social media content

Citations of content posted to social media can usually be limited to the text (as in the first example below). A note may be added if a more formal citation is needed. In rare cases, a bibliography entry may also be appropriate. In place of a title, quote up to the first 280 characters of the post. Comments are cited in reference to the original post.

The Instagram post included a photo of the president delivering a eulogy at the National Cathedral and referred to O’Connor as “gracious and principled” (@potus, December 19, 2023).

Definitions

A bibliography is a list of sources (books, journals, Web sites, periodicals, etc.) one has used for researching a topic. Bibliographies are sometimes called "References" or "Works Cited" depending on the style format you are using. A bibliography usually just includes the bibliographic information (i.e., the author, title, publisher, etc.).

An annotation is a summary and/or evaluation. Therefore, an annotated bibliography includes a summary and/or evaluation of each of the sources. Depending on your project or the assignment, your annotations may do one or more of the following.

  • Reflect : Once you've summarized and assessed a source, you need to ask how it fits into your research. Was this source helpful to you? How does it help you shape your argument? How can you use this source in your research project? Has it changed how you think about your topic?

Your annotated bibliography may include some of these, all of these, or even others. If you're doing this for a class, you should get specific guidelines from your instructor.

Why should I write an annotated bibliography?

To learn about your topic : Writing an annotated bibliography is excellent preparation for a research project. Just collecting sources for a bibliography is useful, but when you have to write annotations for each source, you're forced to read each source more carefully. You begin to read more critically instead of just collecting information. At the professional level, annotated bibliographies allow you to see what has been done in the literature and where your own research or scholarship can fit. To help you formulate a thesis: Every good research paper is an argument. The purpose of research is to state and support a thesis. So, a very important part of research is developing a thesis that is debatable, interesting, and current. Writing an annotated bibliography can help you gain a good perspective on what is being said about your topic. By reading and responding to a variety of sources on a topic, you'll start to see what the issues are, what people are arguing about, and you'll then be able to develop your own point of view.

To help other researchers : Extensive and scholarly annotated bibliographies are sometimes published. They provide a comprehensive overview of everything important that has been and is being said about that topic. You may not ever get your annotated bibliography published, but as a researcher, you might want to look for one that has been published about your topic.

The format of an annotated bibliography can vary, so if you're doing one for a class, it's important to ask for specific guidelines.

The bibliographic information : Generally, though, the bibliographic information of the source (the title, author, publisher, date, etc.) is written in either MLA or APA format. For more help with formatting, see our MLA handout . For APA, go here: APA handout .

The annotations: The annotations for each source are written in paragraph form. The lengths of the annotations can vary significantly from a couple of sentences to a couple of pages. The length will depend on the purpose. If you're just writing summaries of your sources, the annotations may not be very long. However, if you are writing an extensive analysis of each source, you'll need more space.

You can focus your annotations for your own needs. A few sentences of general summary followed by several sentences of how you can fit the work into your larger paper or project can serve you well when you go to draft.

What is a thesis?

What is a dissertation, getting started, staying on track.

A thesis is a long-term project that you work on over the course of a semester or a year. Theses have a very wide variety of styles and content, so we encourage you to look at prior examples and work closely with faculty to develop yours. 

Before you begin, make sure that you are familiar with the dissertation genre—what it is for and what it looks like.

Generally speaking, a dissertation’s purpose is to prove that you have the expertise necessary to fulfill your doctoral-degree requirements by showing depth of knowledge and independent thinking.

The form of a dissertation may vary by discipline. Be sure to follow the specific guidelines of your department.

There is also a link to guidelines for the prospectus . Consult with your committee chair about specific requirements and standards for your dissertation.

Finding an original topic can be a daunting and overwhelming task. These key concepts can help you focus and save time.

Finding a topic for your thesis or dissertation should start with a research question that excites or at least interests you. A rigorous, engaging, and original project will require continuous curiosity about your topic, about your own thoughts on the topic, and about what other scholars have said on your topic. Avoid getting boxed in by thinking you know what you want to say from the beginning; let your research and your writing evolve as you explore and fine-tune your focus through constant questioning and exploration.

Get a sense of the broader picture before you narrow your focus and attempt to frame an argument. Read, skim, and otherwise familiarize yourself with what other scholars have done in areas related to your proposed topic. Briefly explore topics tangentially related to yours to broaden your perspective and increase your chance of finding a unique angle to pursue.

Critical Reading

Critical reading is the opposite of passive reading. Instead of merely reading for information to absorb, critical reading also involves careful, sustained thinking about what you are reading. This process may include analyzing the author’s motives and assumptions, asking what might be left out of the discussion, considering what you agree with or disagree with in the author’s statements and why you agree or disagree, and exploring connections or contradictions between scholarly arguments. Conversation

Your thesis or dissertation will incorporate some ideas from other scholars whose work you researched. By reading critically and following your curiosity, you will develop your own ideas and claims, and these contributions are the core of your project. You will also acknowledge the work of scholars who came before you, and you must accurately and fairly attribute this work and define your place within the larger discussion. Make sure that you know how to quote, summarize, paraphrase ,  integrate , and cite secondary sources to avoid plagiarism and to show the depth and breadth of your knowledge.

A thesis is a long-term, large project that involves both research and writing; it is easy to lose focus, motivation, and momentum. Here are suggestions for achieving the result you want in the time you have.

The dissertation is probably the largest project you have undertaken, and a lot of the work is self-directed. The project can feel daunting or even overwhelming unless you break it down into manageable pieces and create a timeline for completing each smaller task. Be realistic but also challenge yourself, and be forgiving of yourself if you miss a self-imposed deadline here and there.

Your program will also have specific deadlines for different requirements, including establishing a committee, submitting a prospectus, completing the dissertation, defending the dissertation, and submitting your work. Consult your department’s website for these dates and incorporate them into the timeline for your work.

Accountability

Sometimes self-imposed deadlines do not feel urgent unless there is accountability to someone beyond yourself. To increase your motivation to complete tasks on schedule, set dates with your committee chair to submit pre-determined pieces of a chapter. You can also arrange with a fellow doctoral student to check on each other’s progress. Research and writing can be lonely, so it is also nice to share that journey with someone and support each other through the process.

Common Pitfalls

The most common challenges for students writing a dissertation are writer’s block, information-overload, and the compulsion to keep researching forever.

There are many strategies for avoiding writer’s block, such as freewriting, outlining, taking a walk, starting in the middle, and creating an ideal work environment for your particular learning style. Pay attention to what helps you and try different things until you find what works.

Finally, remember that there is always more to learn and your dissertation cannot incorporate everything. Follow your curiosity but also set limits on the scope of your work. It helps to create a folder entitled “future projects” for topics and sources that interest you but that do not fit neatly into the dissertation. Also remember that future scholars will build off of your work, so leave something for them to do.

Browsing through theses and dissertations of the past can help to get a sense of your options and gain inspiration but be careful to use current guidelines and refer to your committee instead of relying on these examples for form or formatting.

How to Write a Bibliography for a Dissertation

Properly acknowledging the outside research that you used within your dissertation is crucial. Your bibliography is a list of all the ideas, texts, graphics and data used in your paper. It may include works cited in your paper or information you simply consulted. Compiling your bibliography may take longer to write and organize than you expect, so work on compiling your bibliography on days where you are not in a writing mood. There are several different formats for bibliographies, so consult with your dissertation committee for its desired style.

General Format

Your bibliography goes at the end of your dissertation. List every outside source individually on your bibliography. The list is arranged alphabetically. Every entry must contain the author’s name, the title of the work, the journal, publisher and year. Different disciplines use different formats. The most frequently used styles are APA style for sciences and MLA style or Chicago style for humanities.

MLA Bibliography

According to the Seventh Edition of the Modern Language Association handbook, include a Works Cited page as your bibliography. This style is different from Chicago and APA style because it requires you to list your medium of publication, such as print, film or DVD. The basic form for MLA style is author’s last name, comma, first name and a period. Then list the title of the book in italics followed by a period. Next, type the city of publication, a colon, the publisher, a comma, the year of publication and a period. End with the medium of publication and a period.

APA Bibliography

The American Psychological Association is typically used in social science dissertations. According to the Sixth Edition, if you are asked to complete your bibliography in APA style, consult with your committee chair about more specific requirements. With APA style, you use a reference list instead of a bibliography. This is different because you only list sources that you referenced in your text. The basic rules for your entry are the author’s last name, comma, first initial and then a period. Then place the year of publication in parentheses followed by a period. Put the title of the work in italics followed by a period. Finally, write the publisher’s location, a colon and the publisher’s name. End with a period.

Chicago Bibliography

In the 16th Edition of the Chicago Manual Style, include a bibliography page for your dissertation. To correctly format entries, list the author’s last name, a comma, the first name and a period. Next, type the title of the text in italics followed by a period. End with the city of publication, a comma, the publisher’s name, a comma, the year of publication and a period.

Thesis and dissertation can mean different things, depending on which institution the work is from.

At Auckland University of Technology (and other NZ universities):

  • Thesis is used either for a doctoral or a master's degree.
  • Dissertation is used either for a master's or a bachelor's degree with honours.
  • Exegesis is the written component of a practice-based thesis where the major output is a creative work;  e.g. a film, artwork, novel.

In some other parts of the world, such as the United States, a dissertation may be used for a doctoral degree and a thesis   used for a master's degree. You can use the same citation pattern, no matter what the type of thesis is called.

List the type of thesis as it appears on the title page, but abbreviate dissertation as diss .

The bibliographic search for professional thesis or dissertation

To be efficient, bibliographic search for the professional thesis or dissertation must be undertaken in a methodical way. A good knowledge of the Learning Center resources is also necessary.

Indeed you have to realize a “review of literature”, that is a state-of-the-art on what has been written on a given subject. To do so, knowing key resources which give access to academic or professional articles will be very helpful!

But one thing at a time. You begin your search: what are the key steps to follow without getting lost in the process?

1. Limit the subject of your dissertation

From your beginning topic, you have to define a research problem. Answering those few questions: What? Who? Where? When? How? Why? will help you consider all the dimensions of your topic.A partir de votre thème de départ, il s’agit de cerner précisément votre problématique, en lien avec votre directeur de thèse/mémoire.

2. Define appropriate keywords

Think of the different terms that you can use to consult the different resources relying on the concepts you have identified. Don’t stop to the first term that arises, but try to think about synonyms, close terms, so that you can keep moving on if your first results are not satisfying.

3. Define the type of information to find 

As part of the review of literature, you might have to find theoretical analysis, or practical applications in companies, on a management subject for example. But you could also need market data, statistics, legal information or financial data...

4. Consult the right resources

The previous step determines the sources or resources you will use. For the review of literature you are going to focus on books of course, but also on “academic” (research) and professional articles.

5. Evaluate the results 

You must systematically ask yourself if the documents you got are valuable, in a double dimension:

  • Reliability: are facts or data advanced in the documents true? Is the author known and recognized? What’s his goal: a theoretical analysis or rather the expression of an opinion)? Is there a date?
  • Relevance: a given document can be reliable, but not relevant in respect of your needs, and what you want to demonstrate

In other words be critical with what you find. You must pay critical attention to results found on internet. Always try to identify the organism or author of the site. Besides, don’t collect more documents than you can deal with, for example if your topic is widely covered by literature. Be realistic with your work load evaluation!

6. Organizing the results 

You may collect a huge number of documents throughout your search.  Capitalize those results as you go further in your search to make sure that you do not get weighed down under a great amount of information that you will not be able to deal with! Give clear titles to your documents, articles or else, that you download and file them into folders, by subject for instance, on your PC. List the results you found in an (Excel for instance) file in which you write the document references (title, source, date, name of the file, findings…). Following this process will help you save time when using your sources but also when writing your bibliography!

7. Using the information in your thesis 

It is the thesis/dissertation writing part. Your thesis has to be organized according to a consistent outline. Throughout your demonstration, you will use the bibliographic references that you will have selected and that you will imperatively quote. This is also when you will start to build the bibliography that you will be presented at the end of your work (we will get back to these two crucial elements).

Of course, this way of putting the process is schematic: you will probably go back and forth between the steps. For example, it often happens that according to the documents you find, you widen the key word list, you might even adapt your thesis or dissertation topic.

After seeing the general process, let’s have a look at step n°4.

Which resources should you favour for your literature review?

First of all, look for books that deal with your topic or part of your topic on Discovery . If your are doing an internship and therefore not present on the campus, you may check ebooks which are listed in the catalogue too.

Academic articles are scientific, thorough articles that build, with books, a solid base to your work. The “Journal of Finance” or the “Journal of Marketing” are two examples for academic review, but many others exist in all possible fields of research including Management.

You can find information with a professional and practical point of view in articles from professional periodicals . There is a great number of journals and magazines providing access to this type of articles. For instance, in the marketing field you may look over “Advertising Age”, Marketing Week” or “New Media age” for example. The table below shows the main resources giving access to all those articles. Do not forget to read the description for each resource you visit before accessing it, so that you have a more detailed idea of their content and specificities (language, technical features, etc).

You are going to use part of the documents found during your research. To avoid plagiarism, it is important to cite the sources you draw inspiration from, whether you are citing them directly by using quote marks or rephrasing them.

Title: graph retrieval-augmented generation: a survey.

Abstract: Recently, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) has achieved remarkable success in addressing the challenges of Large Language Models (LLMs) without necessitating retraining. By referencing an external knowledge base, RAG refines LLM outputs, effectively mitigating issues such as ``hallucination'', lack of domain-specific knowledge, and outdated information. However, the complex structure of relationships among different entities in databases presents challenges for RAG systems. In response, GraphRAG leverages structural information across entities to enable more precise and comprehensive retrieval, capturing relational knowledge and facilitating more accurate, context-aware responses. Given the novelty and potential of GraphRAG, a systematic review of current technologies is imperative. This paper provides the first comprehensive overview of GraphRAG methodologies. We formalize the GraphRAG workflow, encompassing Graph-Based Indexing, Graph-Guided Retrieval, and Graph-Enhanced Generation. We then outline the core technologies and training methods at each stage. Additionally, we examine downstream tasks, application domains, evaluation methodologies, and industrial use cases of GraphRAG. Finally, we explore future research directions to inspire further inquiries and advance progress in the field.
