హవీష్ కథానాయకుడిగా నిజార్ షఫీ దర్శకత్వంలో కిరణ్ స్టూడియోస్ పతాకంపై రమేష్ వర్మ ప్రొడ‌క్ష‌న్‌లో రమేష్ వర్మ నిర్మించిన డిఫరెంట్ రొమాంటిక్ థ్రిల్లర్ 'సెవెన్'. రెజీనా, నందితా శ్వేత, అనీషా ఆంబ్రోస్, త్రిధా చౌదరి, అదితి ఆర్య, పూజితా పొన్నాడ కథానాయికలు. రహమాన్, సుంకర లక్ష్మి ప్రధాన పాత్రలు పోషించారు. ఈ సినిమా జూన్ 6వ తేదీన ప్రేక్షకుల ముందుకు వచ్చింది. అయితే ఒకరోజు ముందుగానే పెయిడ్ ప్రివ్యూలు ప్రదర్శించడం గమనార్హం. అయితే ఈ సినిమా ఎలాంటి ఫలితాన్ని అందించిదనే విషయాన్ని తెలుసుకోవాలంటే కథలోకి వెళ్లాల్సిందే.

కార్తీక్ (కోనేరు హవీష్) సాఫ్ట్‌వేర్ ఇంజినీర్. అదే కంపెనీలో పనిచేసే రమ్య (నందితా శ్వేత)ను ప్రేమించి పెళ్లి చేసుకొంటాడు. కానీ ఓ రోజు రమ్య తన భర్త కనిపించడం లేదంటూ పోలీసులకు ఫిర్యాదు చేస్తుంది. అదే విధంగా జెన్నీ (అనిషా అంబ్రోస్), ప్రియా (త్రిథా చౌదరీ) కూడా తమ భర్తలు కనిపించడం లేదని ఫిర్యాదు చేస్తారు. ఆ క్రమంలో వరుస హత్యలు జరగడం పోలీసులకు సవాల్‌గా నిలుస్తుంది. ఆ హత్యలు కార్తీక్ చేస్తున్నట్టు అంతా భావించి పోలీసులు వేటాడం మొదలుపెడుతారు. హత్యలన్నీ చేసేది కార్తీక్ కాదు కృష్ణమూర్తి అనే కథను మరో మలుపు తిప్పుతుంది.

సెవెన్ కథలో కార్తీక్ ఎవరు? కల్యాణ్ ఎవరు? రెజీనా కసండ్రా (సరస్వతి) పాత్ర ఏమిటి? పూజిత పొన్నాడ (భాను), అదితి ఆర్య పాత్రలు కథను ఎలా మలుపు తిప్పాయి? ఇంతకు కృష్ణమూర్తి పాత్ర ఉందా? ఉంటే దాని విషయం ఏంటి? ఈ వరుస హత్యల వెనుక అసలు కారణం ఏమిటి. చివరకు పోలీస్ అధికారి (రెహమాన్) కేసును ఎలా ఛేదించాడు? అనే ప్రశ్నలకు సమాధానమే సెవెన్ సినిమా కథ.

ఫస్టాఫ్ అనాలిసిస్

సెవెన్ సినిమా హవీష్, నందిత శ్వేత, విద్యులేఖ రామన్, 'జబర్దస్త్' వేణు, ధనరాజ్ లాంటి క్యారెక్టర్లతో పాజిటివ్ నోట్‌లో మొదలవుతుంది. కానీ సరిగా పండని సన్నివేశాలు, అనూహ్యమైన ట్విస్టులు కథను, ప్రేక్షకుడిని గందరగోళంలోకి నెట్టినట్టు అనిపిస్తుంది. జెన్నీ, ప్రియా క్యారెక్టర్లు కథలోకి ఎంటర్ కావడంతో ఏం జరుగుతుందనే విషయం ప్రేక్షకుడిని అర్థం కాకుండా ఉంటుంది. కృతిమంగా రూపొందించుకొన్న సన్నివేశాలతో ప్రేక్షకుడిని తప్పుదారి పట్టించే ప్రయత్నం జరుగుతుంది. ఎలాంటి లాజిక్ లేకుండా హవీష్ ఎటాక్‌‌తో తొలి భాగం ముగుస్తుంది.

సెకండాఫ్ అనాలిసిస్

ఒక సెకండాఫ్‌లో రెజీనా క్యారెక్టర్ ఎంట్రీ ఇచ్చేంత వరకు తలా తోక లేకుండా సినిమా సాగదీసినట్టు ముందుకెళ్తుంది. 1980 ఫ్లాష్ బ్యాక్‌లో సరస్వతిగా రెజీనా రావడంతో కథలో వేగం పెరుగుతుంది. ఇక రెజీనా పాత్ర వృద్ధాప్యంలోకి వెళ్లగానే మళ్లీ సినిమా ఎప్పటిలానే మొదటికి వస్తుంది. పేలవమైన యాక్టింగ్ స్కిల్స్‌తో నటీనటులు తమ పాత్రలను పండించకపోవడంతో సినిమా తేలిపోయినట్టు అనిపిస్తుంది. క్లైమాక్స్‌లో ఉండే డ్రామా చాలా నాసిరకంగా ఉంటుంది. సరస్వతి పాత్రతో ఎమోషన్స్ పండించాల్సిన చోట సన్నివేశాలు కామెడీగా మారుతాయి.

దర్శకుడి ప్రతిభ

సెవెన్‌లో బలమైన కథ ఉన్నప్పటికీ.. దానిని ఓ పద్దతి ప్రకారం రాసుకోవడంలో దర్శకుడు నిజార్ షఫీ విఫలమైనట్టు కనిపిస్తుంది. దర్శకుడిగా నిజార్‌పై సినిమాటోగ్రాఫర్ డామినేట్ చేశాడా అనే ఫీలింగ్ కలుగకమానదు. సెకండాఫ్‌లో ఉండే బలమైన కథ కోసం జరిగే డ్రైవ్, ఎగ్జిక్యూషన్ సరిగా లేకపోవడంతో అది కూడా తేలిపోయనట్టు అనిపిస్తుంది. పాత్రల స్థాయికి నటీనటులు ఎంపిక చేసుకోకవడం సినిమాకు మరో మైనస్ పాయింట్‌గా మారింది. హీరోయిన్లకు సంబంధించిన క్యారెక్టర్లను లాజికల్ తీర్చిదిద్దడంలో తడబాబు కనిపిస్తుంది.

హీరో హవీష్ గురించి

ఇక హీరో హవీష్ లుక్, మేకోవర్ బాగుంది. కానీ ఇంటెన్స్, ఎమోషనల్ సీన్లలో తేలిపోయాడు. నటనపరంగా ఇంకా పరిణితి చెందాల్సిన అవసరం చాలా ఉంది. కీలక సమయంలో ఎమోషన్స్ పడించడంలో విఫలమయ్యాడు. ఏడుగురు హీరోయిన్ల ముందు యాక్టింగ్ పరంగా వెనుకపడినట్టు కనిపిస్తుంది. యువ హీరోగా పుష్కలంగా భవిష్యత్ ఉంది కాబట్టి తదుపరి సినిమా కోసం యాక్టింగ్ పరంగా మెరుగులు దిద్దుకోవాల్సిన అవసరం ఎంతైనా ఉంది.

ఏడుగురు హీరోయిన్ల గురించి

ఇక ఏడుగురు హీరోయిన్లలో రెజీనా కసండ్రానే మిగితా హీరోయిన్లను డామినేట్ చేసింది. నెగిటివ్ షేడ్స్‌ పాత్రలో రెజీనా అదరగొట్టింది. ప్రేమ కోసం తహతహలాడే యువతిగా పాత్రలో ఒదిగిపోయింది. ఆ తర్వాత నందిత శ్వేత కొంతలో కొంత తన పాత్రను రిజిస్టర్ చేసేందుకు ప్రయత్నించారు. త్రిథా చౌదరీ అదితి, పూజితా పొన్నాడ పాత్రల నిడివి తక్కువే అయినప్పటికీ తమ వంతుగా తమ పాత్రలకు న్యాయం చేశారు.

మిగితా పాత్రల్లో

మిగితా నటీనటుల్లో ఏడిద శ్రీరామ్, విద్యులేఖ రామన్, 'జబర్దస్త్' వేణు, ధనరాజ్, సత్య, 'జోష్' రవి కనిపించారు. అయితే వీరి పాత్రలకు కథలో పెద్దగా ప్రాధాన్యం కనిపించదు. కొంతలో కొంత జోష్ రవి, సత్య పాత్రలు మెరుగ్గా ఉంటాయి. ఇక మిగితా వారంతా గుర్తింపు పొందని పాత్రలతోనే సరిపుచ్చుకొన్నారు. ముఖ్యంగా రెహమాన్ పోలీస్ అధికారిగా ఆకట్టుకొన్నారు. తన పాత్రకు పూర్తిస్థాయిలో న్యాయం చేశారు.

టెక్నికల్‌గా

సాంకేతిక విభాగాల్లో దర్శకుడు నిజార్ షఫీ అందించిన సినిమాటోగ్రఫి చెప్పుకోదగ్గ స్థాయిలో ఉంది. ఎడిటింగ్, మ్యూజిక్ ఇతర సాంకేతిక విభాగాలు పనితీరు కేవలం యావరేజ్‌గానే అనిపిస్తాయి. రమేష్ వర్మ అందించిన కథ బాగున్నప్పటికీ.. స్క్రీన్ ప్లే బెడిసి కొట్టిందనే చెప్పవచ్చు.

సెవెన్ మర్డర్ మిస్టరీతో సాగే ఓ సస్పెన్స్ థ్రిల్లర్. కథలో బలమున్నప్పటికీ.. కథనం బలహీన పడటం ఈ సినిమాకు ప్రధాన లోపం. లెక్కకు మంచి పాత్రలు ఉన్నప్పటికీ. వాటికి సంబంధించిన క్యారెక్టరైజేషన్ సరిగా లేకపోవడం మరో మైనస్. సస్పెన్స్ థ్రిల్లర్ సినిమాలను ఇష్టపడే వారికి సెవెన్ నచ్చుతుంది. బీ, సీ సెంటర్ల ప్రేక్షకులకు నచ్చితే సినిమా కమర్షియల్‌గా మంచి ఫలితాన్ని అందిస్తుంది.

హవీష్ హీరోగా నిజార్ షఫీ దర్శకత్వంలో కిరణ్ స్టూడియోస్ పతాకంపై రమేష్ వర్మ నిర్మించిన చిత్రం ‘7’. పూర్తి కమర్షియల్ థ్రిల్లర్‌గా తెరకెక్కిన ఈ చిత్రం రెజీనా, త్రిథా చౌదరీ, అదితి ఆర్య, నందితా శ్వేతా, అనీషా అంబ్రోస్, పూజిత పొన్నాడ హీరోయిన్లుగా నటించారు. సస్పెన్స్‌కు పెద్ద పీట వేసిందంటూ వచ్చిన అంచనాల నడుమ రిలీజైన ఈ సినిమా ప్రేక్షకులను ఏ మేరకు మెప్పించగలిగిందో చూద్దాం.

సాఫ్ట్‌వేర్ ఇంజనీర్‌గా పని చేస్తున్న కార్తీక్ (హవీష్).. తన కంపెనీలో సహద్యోగి రమ్య(నందితా శ్వేత)ను ప్రేమించి పెళ్లి చేసుకుంటాడు. ఇది ఇలా ఉండగా ఓ రోజు రమ్య తన భర్త కనిపించట్లేదంటూ పోలీసులకు ఫిర్యాదు చేస్తుంది. అదే తరుణంలో రమ్య మాదిరిగానే జెన్నీ(అనీషా అంబ్రోస్), ప్రియా(త్రిథా చౌదరీ)లు కూడా తమ భర్తలు కనిపించట్లేదని ఫిర్యాదు చేస్తారు. ఇక ఆ క్రమంలో సిటీలో జరిగే వరుస హత్యలు పోలీసులకు పెద్ద సవాల్‌గా మారతాయి. ఈ హత్యల వెనుక హస్తం ఎవరిది.? హత్యలన్నీ కార్తీక్ చేస్తున్నాడా.? అసలు మధ్యలో ఈ కృష్ణమూర్తి ఎవరు.? అనే ప్రశ్నలకు సమాధానాలు తెలియాలంటే సినిమా చూడాల్సిందే.

న‌టీన‌టులు  :

సినిమాకి ప్రధాన బలం హీరోయిన్ రెజీనా కసాండ్ర. మిగిలిన హీరోయిన్స్ అందరిని డామినేట్ చేస్తూ చక్కని నటనకనబరిచింది. ప్రేమ కోసం తహతహలాడే అమ్మాయి పాత్రలో అక్కడక్కడా నెగటివ్ షేడ్స్ చూపిస్తూ రెజీనా తన పాత్రలో ఒదిగిపోయింది. ఇక హీరో హవీష్ విషయానికి వస్తే.. సినిమాలోని అతని లుక్, మేకోవర్ బాగుంది. కానీ ఇంటెన్స్, ఎమోషనల్ సీన్స్ వచ్చేసరికి పూర్తిగా తేలిపోయాడు. నటన పరంగా మరింత పరిణితి చెందాల్సి ఉంది. రెజీనా తర్వాత నందిత శ్వేత కొంతలో కొంత తన పాత్రను రిజిస్టర్ చేసేందుకు ప్రయత్నించింది. త్రిథా చౌదరీ అదితి, పూజితా పొన్నాడ పాత్రల నిడివి తక్కువే అయినప్పటికీ తమ పాత్రలకు న్యాయం చేశారు.

విశ్లేష‌ణ‌  :

సెవెన్ కథలో బలం ఉన్నప్పటికీ.. దాన్ని ఎగ్జిక్యూట్ చేయడంలో దర్శకుడిగా విఫలమైనట్లే చెప్పాలి. ఫస్ట్ హాఫ్ మొత్తం సస్పెన్స్ పెట్టి.. సెకండాఫ్ కి వచ్చేసరికి పూర్తిగా తేలిపోయేలా చేశాడు. నటీనటుల సెలక్షన్ కూడా సినిమాకు మరో మైనస్ పాయింట్ గా మారింది. క్లైమాక్స్ సన్నివేశాలు నాసిరకంగా ఉండడం వల్ల సినిమాకు మరింత డామేజ్ ఏర్పడింది.

సాంకేతిక విభాగాల పనితీరు :

దర్శకుడిగా కంటే సినిమాటోగ్రాఫర్ గా నిజార్ షఫీ సఫలమయ్యాడనే చెప్పాలి. ఎడిటింగ్, సంగీతం, ఇతర సాంకేతిక విభాగాల పనితీరు యావరేజ్ గా ఉన్నాయి. అటు నిర్మాతగా మారిన దర్శకుడు రమేష్ వర్మ ఎంచుకున్న కథ బాగున్నప్పటికీ.. స్క్రీన్ ప్లే మాత్రం బెడిసికొట్టింది. నిర్మాణ విలువలు మాత్రం బాగున్నాయి.

7' (seven) is what happens when you think you've written a gripping film, and then when it is adapted to the screen, you learn that it can be two different things.

Caricature. This word kept popping up in my head as I watched cinematographer Nizar Shafi's debut directorial 7 (Seven) because a lot of what unfolds in the film is caricature...ish. The hero, the cop (Rahman), the women, and even the journalist's character (with a jolna bag, kurta and nerdy glasses) all exist to prove that point.

Where to begin? Well, credit where it is due, Shafi's camera work is bearable for its nearly two hour run time. Nothing exemplary about it, but it isn't jarring to prompt a quick exit from the theatre. The list of "pros" ends there.

The writing is a big letdown. One particular scene, early on in the film, where an old man meets Rahman's ACP Vijay Prakash to share vital info, helped me make my mind up about what was in store. Soon as he drops a bombshell — in other words, plot la twist — he is revealed to be a mental patient, and is dragged out of the cop's room by a doctor and a ward boy all in a matter of five seconds! Shafi, going forward, should consider deputing this responsibility to someone who understands the difference between scripting for a staged drama and a movie.

Then there's the romance. I can stand mokka comedy, but why present it as acceptable commentary between a couple in a relationship? Sample this. Nandita Swetha (as Ramya — a 'why did I do this role?') tells Havish that her family is urging her to get married soon. To which the hero responds, "Ponnunga na konjam freedom kudukkanum!"... and this revolutionary response is greeted with a "romba matured ah pesureenga!"

But what gripped me from start to end of this film was a feeling of 'What am I watching?' (minus the profanity). David Fincher's The Curious Case of Benjamin Button is name-dropped more than twice. Shafi himself appears in a blink-and-you-miss cameo to put forward the point that perhaps the mystery we're "investigating" in this film is something similar to what we saw in Fincher's. But when has a thriller ever been straightforward?

And so it proves, when Regina Cassandra is revealed to be the key. But wait! She is not. It is actually the older version of Regina. Credit to the elderly artiste who played that role, but when she yells at Havish... "Neeya sethuru, illana naa unna konnuduven!", the audience had a hearty laugh. I think it isn't too difficult to draw a parallel between the situations of the watching public and Havish!

Because 7 (Seven) is what happens when you think you've written a gripping film, and then when you adapt it to screen, you learn that it can be two different things.

Seven Review: Ludicrous Thriller

'Seven' has been in the news as six glamorous heroines paired up with Havish. Why did these six heroines agree to do lip-locks with Havish and has the film justified its buzz?

Let’s find out.

Story: An ACP officer (Rehman) in Hyderabad finds intriguing the stories narrated by two women Ramya (Nandita Swetha) and Jenny (Anisha Ambrose) who come to his police station to report their missing husbands.

He concludes that the husbands they are reporting is the same person Karthik (Havish), a software engineer in a MNC.

A mentally retarded old-man makes the case even more complicated by revealing that the guy in the photo is not Karthik but Krishnamurthy who was his classmate in his village in Godavari district. How would Karthik, a young guy, be classmate to this old man?

The mystery deepens with another woman coming to report her husband’s missing who also happens to be Karthik? What is the real mystery?

Artistes’ Performances: Havish got to play two shades of the role that of a young software guy and a person in the 80’s. Surprisingly, Havish is fitted in the role of a rural 80’s guy than the software professional. In both the roles, he is clueless and expressionless.

However, the real star of the movie is Regina Cassandra, who in the role of Saraswathi owns the proceedings in the second half entirely.

As an obsessive woman, Regina has made her portion more interesting and later the old woman who played Regina’s older self has gone overboard. 

Rehman as ACP is just okay. Nandita Swetha and Anisha Ambrose appear in the first half with neat roles while Tridha Chowdhary makes her appearance in brief sequences in the second half.

Poojitha Ponnada and Aditi Arya have got roles that are generally played by junior artistes.

Technical Excellence: Nizar Shafi has directed this film as well as filmed it as a cinematographer. He gets marks as cameraman. Music is not appealing. Dialogues are plain. Editing is better in the second half.

Analysis “Seven” is directed by cinematographer Nizar Shafi but the story and screenplays is written by Ramesh Varma. This is more of Ramesh Varma’s work. The writer has come up with most unbelievable twist for this thriller.

The story’s twist and turns encompassing 1980’s to present day is hard to digest. This is the fatal flaw in this thriller that is less engaging and more boring.

“Seven” gets the proceedings wrong from the first two romantic threads involving Havish- Nandita Swetha and Havish-Anisha Ambrose. Had these two romantic threads been a bit engaging and told in cute way, the movie would have been different.

As these romantic episodes are clichéd, the entire first half never draws into it. The main mystery unfolds in the second half but even those portions look forced, twists look for the sake of twists.

When central point holds on the fact that a woman dreams the hero as her ‘man’, the hero ought to be very handsome personality or should have such ‘dream man’ persona off-screen.

If a woman dreams a personality like Mahesh Babu or Prabhas or Vijay Deverakonda and lives her life imagining them, it is believable.

Here Havish has played this role and his persona doesn’t fit for this aspect. This is why the film’s main point in the second half looks odd and unbelievable.

The film has many actresses but it primarily focuses on Regina’s character which is seemingly based on Farhan Akhtar’s role in Bollywood film “Karthik Calling Karthik”. 

To be fair, the film’s final portions are a bit interesting compared to the rest of the mess. Regina makes them riveting with her performance but her thread is stretched beyond point and portions involving Regina’s old self (another actress has played Regina’s old woman character) have turned into laughable fare.

This is another example that Ramesh Varma's poor writing skills and Havish's expression-less action.  

All in all, “Seven” has half dozen heroines but it offers little redeemable points but it sure provides head-ache.

Seven Movie Review: A bland thriller that messes with your brains

Cinematographer Nizar Shafi has turned director with the Telugu-Tamil bilingual  Seven  (this review is based on the Telugu version), headlined by six women — Regina Cassandra, Nandita Swetha, Poojitha Ponnada, Tridha Choudhury, Anisha Ambrose and Aditi Arya — and it is an investigative thriller that messes with our brains. 

There’s an interesting premise at the heart of Seven . It begins with two women — Ramya (Nandita Swetha) and Jenny (Anisha Ambrose) — lodging complaints with the police about their missing husbands. After speaking to them, alcoholic cop, ACP Vijay Prakash (Rahman) conjectures that both of them are looking for the same person, Karthik (Havish). Another woman, Priya (Tridha Choudhury) comes up with a similar missing complaint about her husband and this intensifies Prakash’s resolve to catch Karthik. However, the cops are in for a shock when a mentally ill old man claims that the person they are searching for has died a few years ago.

Meanwhile, Prakash survives an attempt on his life by Karthik. Refusing to believe his subordinates' theory that Karthik is a spirit/ghost and insisting that he is a fraudster, the ACP makes it his mission to track him down before the victim count increases.

Despite giving us an intriguing plotline, Shafi and writer Ramesh Varma quickly run out of ideas to keep us hooked. The twists in the film unfold a little too lazily. In the second hour, the director turns what could have been a riveting thriller into something quite bland.

The script dallies with themes of obsession, psychopathy and the consequences of one's action, and just when you think you have figured out the twist, the carpet is pulled under your feet to unfold another twist. But despite this, Seven  is not a gripping investigative thriller owing to the perfunctory treatment which betrays the rawness in the story. Every dialogue uttered by the characters, especially in the second hour,  promises a big reveal, but the performances, sadly, are not up to the mark.

The story does have some unintentionally amusing yet interesting moments. There are echoes of David Fincher's The Curious Case of Benjamin Button , and the recurrent nature of the backstory reminds us of several films with reincarnation themes. Yet Seven is nothing like those and never quite succeeds in spooking us, thanks largely due to the excessive melodrama.

Although Nizaf Shafi fails as a director, his cinematography lends an edge-of-the-seat feeling to the proceedings. Chaitan Bharadwaj's songs and score too aid in creating a spooky vibe to an extent. 

Regina Cassandra, and the woman who plays her older part, steal the show as far as the performances go. Havish, on the other hand, seems ill-equipped to tackle the role of Karthik, and while he does a decent job in the love scenes, is quite blank in the emotional scenes. He definitely needs to reinvent himself as an actor. Rahman is convincing as the manipulative cop.

All told, Seven is a moody investigative thriller with an unenthusiastic narrative and a lot of logical loopholes that undo the promising build-up of the first half.

One movie that has caught much attention due to the presence of multiple heroines and a single hero and thrilling premise with loads of suspense and glam happens to be seven. Here's team AP Herald's exclusive first on net seven review.

Havish doesn't have much acting scope and he's rather disinterested and his performance doesn't engage, but the girls are equally glamorous with Regina Cassandra, Aditi Arya, Nandita Swetha, Tridha Chaudhary, Pujitha Ponnada and Anisha Ambrose are seductive and sensuous besides emoting adequately. Rahman is impressive in his powerful role.  In fact, the entire movie revolves around the way he enquires the case. His Telugu dubbing is not as impressive as the Tamil. Most of the heroines' sole purpose is just glamor and we have enough of it. 

Chaitan Baradwaj's background score is interesting but his songs are not hum-worthy. Cinematography by Nizar Shafi is top notch and Seven is visually classy and glossy while editing by Praveen KL could have been better. Also, the plot is similar to Tamil movie 'Naan Avan Illai' which released a while ago. In fact, that movie even had a sequel. Seven is mostly in the same lane. However, the screenplay in the investigation differs. The only thread which makes the movie unique is that. 

Debutant director Nizar Shafi has taken an interesting premise on the lines of Naan Avanillai and has hotter heroines as well. However the screenplay isn't engaging enough. The first half moves at a leisurely pace with dull and monotonous proceedings, and reaches momentum at interval, however the second half drags big time, ending in a cliched flashback and predictable finale. Only the glamorous heroines, the occasional twists and superb cinematography and visual treat are the High points of seven which ends as an average outing.

'7/G' movie review: A promising start squandered

CHENNAI: The first 20–30 minutes of Haroon’s 7/G is refreshing, as he brings back horror to an urban setting, away from the abandoned palatial buildings of the village. Though not new, tropes like running from floor to floor and escalator malfunctioning strike a chord with our immediate reality compared to the bhoot bungalows we don’t frequent, which requires an effort on our part to engage.

The strong beginning makes you feel like 7/G might join the league of celebrated Tamil urban horror films like Shock, Yaavarum Nalam, and Eeram. If only Haroon had maintained the momentum throughout, 7/G begins with the housewarming ceremony of Rajiv (Roshan Basheer), an IT employee, and Varsha (Smruthi Venkat), along with their kid in the titular apartment. Though smiles are flooding the place, their neighbour, played by Subramaniya Siva, gives an ‘andha veeda?’ look. Pretty soon, trouble brews, with people envious of Rajiv’s professional and personal success devising plans to push his family into disarray. On the other hand, the 7/G apartment in itself is a problem. Whether this family survives the two-pronged crisis is what the rest of the film is about.

The plasticity in the characters, along with the ostentatious display of the ‘IT employee lifestyle’, didn’t look too bad as long as the scare scenes were working. However, when the film decides to bring a good spirit and an evil spirit, the screenplay goes into a tailspin, and there is no recovery from then on. Films revolving around a benevolent spirit usually try to make us connect with said spirit through a heart-tugging backstory and make us hate the evil spirits by showing the extent of their malevolence.

Despite complaints of being loud and gaudy, some of the Kanchana and Aranmanai films worked because the good spirit’s flashback is poignant, the injustice meted out to that person is intolerable, and the vengeance is justified. None of that could be said about 7/G. The murder of the person who ends up becoming the benevolent spirit, happens undramatically and in a hurry, only to rush to the present.

The antagonist is poorly written and the actor seems to be miscast as well. Not a single character is worth remembering. All that would have been forgiven if they had delivered on the scare scenes. Also, the writers could have added more effort into writing the male characters, instead of just making them all lewd. This is done only to conveniently move from one scene to another in pursuit of carnality, which ends up serving as an excuse for unwanted sexually charged scenes. While the flashback already failed to evoke empathy, we stop empathising with director Haroon for his problematic writing choices in the second half.

Another glaring problem is the dialogue writing. With an excessive artificiality, the lines do not come off like they are spoken by real people, the issue is further aggravated by the fact that the lines are delivered by one-dimensional characters. It looks as though the director has decided that these actors cannot express anything without words, so he makes them express everything explicitly, with painfully obvious dialogues. For example, a character wakes up from a nightmare and says, “Oh, it’s just a dream,” as if we didn’t get that.

The first thing that goes wrong in any horror film is logic and 7/G is no different. A guruji, who was introduced as an expert in black magic, whose spell causes too much chaos in the first half, is reduced to a comic prop in the pre-climax scene, which both drains the intensity the scene requires and lets the effective first-half build-up, go down the drain.

7/G is a horror film that definitely has its moments and offers ample spooks in the first half. In a welcome move, the male characters in the film take the backseat while the women take over the ghost-hunting vocation. However, all the positives are quickly undone by shoddy execution and a lacklustre second half. More than feeling disappointed with this underwhelming fare, we are left frustrated by the fact that the film squanders the promise it had in the beginning. 7/G might have worked better if there wasn’t a good spirit and the family fought against the evil spirit on their own. The screenplay could have benefitted from brevity and simplicity.

అనుముల అక్షిక (అన‌సూయ‌) ఓ సాధార‌ణ స్కూల్ టీచ‌ర్‌. అనుకోకుండా ఓ హ‌త్య కేసులో ఇరుక్కుంటుంది. ఈ మ‌ర్డ‌ర్ కేసును ఇన్వేస్టిగేట్ చేస్తోన్న జ‌ర్న‌లిస్ట్ ఫాజిల్‌తో (శ్రీనాథ్‌) పాటు అత‌డి ప్రియురాలు ఇష్ట (దివి) పోలీస్ ఆఫీస‌ర్ అనురాగ్ (వ‌శిష్ట సింహా) క‌ళ్ల ముందే మ‌రో వ్య‌క్తిని హ‌త్య చేస్తారు. మ‌ర్డ‌ర్స్ చేసే ముందు అక్షిక‌తో పాటు ఫాజిల్, ఇష్ట వింత‌గా ప్ర‌వ‌ర్తిస్తారు.

ఈ క‌థ‌ను మ‌ర్డ‌ర్ మిస్ట‌రీ బ్యాక్‌డ్రాప్‌లో స్టార్టింగ్ నుంచి ఎండింగ్ వ‌ర‌కు ఇంట్రెస్టింగ్‌గా స్క్రీన్‌పై న‌డిపించ‌డంలో ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు కొంత వ‌ర‌కు స‌క్సెస్ అయ్యాడు.సైన్స్‌, ప‌ర్యావ‌ర‌ణం లాంటి రెండు భిన్న‌మైన అంశాల‌ను రివేంజ్ స్టోరీలో మిక్స్ చేస్తూ క‌న్వీన్సింగ్‌గా చెప్పాడు.

చిక్కుముడులు రివీల్‌...

అక్షిక పాత్ర ప‌రిచ‌యం, ఓ వ్య‌క్తిని ఆమె మ‌ర్డ‌ర్ చేసే సీన్‌తో సినిమా ఇంట్రెస్టింగ్‌గా మొద‌లుపెట్టారు ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు. ఈ కేసునుసాల్వ్ చేయాల‌ని అనుకున్న వాళ్లు కూడా హ‌త్య‌ల‌కు పాల్ప‌డే ట్విస్ట్ ఆక‌ట్టుకుంటుంది. అనురాగ్ ఇన్వేస్టిగేష‌న్ చేసే సీన్స్‌తో అనేక ప్ర‌శ్న‌లు, చిక్కుముడుల‌ను వేసుకుంటూ వెళ్లిన ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు సెకండాఫ్‌లో వాటికి ఆన్స‌ర్ ఇచ్చాడు.

వీటి వెనుక ఎవ‌రున్న‌ది రివీల్ చేసే సీన్‌ను రాసుకున్న తీరు మెప్పిస్తుంది. బ‌యోలాజిక‌ల్ మెమ‌రీ పాయింట్ ప్ర‌ధానంగా సెకండాఫ్‌ను అల్లుకున్నారు. అనుభ‌వ‌జ్ఞులైన న‌టీన‌టులు, టెక్నిక‌ల్ టీమ్‌ను వాడుకుంటూ టిఫిక‌ల్‌ కాన్సెప్ట్‌ను అర్థ‌వంతంగా చెప్పేందుకు ద‌ర్శ‌కుడు ప‌డిన క‌ష్టం తెర‌పై క‌నిపిస్తుంది.

ఈజీగా ఊహించేలా...

సినిమా కాన్సెప్ట్ కొత్త‌గా ఉన్న ట్రీట్‌మెంట్ విష‌యంలో కొన్నిసార్లు రొటీన్‌గా అడుగులు వేశారు మేక‌ర్స్‌. సీరియ‌ల్ కిల్లింగ్స్ వెనుక ఎవ‌రున్నార‌న్న‌ది ఈజీగానే ఊహించేలా ఉండ‌టం సినిమాకు మైన‌స్‌గా మారింది. జ‌గ‌ప‌తి బాబు పాత్రకు సంబంధించిన సీన్స్‌, డైలాగ్‌లో ఎమోష‌న్స్ అంత‌గా పండ‌లేద‌నిపిస్తుంది.

సెకండాఫ్‌లో ఎంట్రీ...

ఈ సినిమాలో జ‌గ‌ప‌తిబాబు మెయిన్ రోల్ అంటూ ప్ర‌చారం చేసింది సినిమా యూనిట్‌. కానీ ఆయ‌న పాత్ర సెకండాఫ్‌లోనే సినిమాలో క‌నిపిస్తుంది. ప‌ర్యావ‌ర‌ణ ప్రేమికుడిగా ఆయ‌న చెప్పై డైలాగ్స్ ప‌ర్వాలేద‌నిపిస్తాయి.

అక్షిక‌గా డిఫ‌రెంట్ వేరియేష‌న్స్ ఉన్న క్యారెక్ట‌ర్‌లో అన‌సూయ క‌నిపించింది. వ‌శిష్ట‌సింహా, శ్రీనాథ్‌, దివితో పాటు ప్ర‌తి ఒక్క‌రూ త‌మ ప‌రిధుల మేర న‌టించారు. గౌత‌మి, క‌స్తూరి వంటి సీనియ‌ర్ హీరోయిన్లు క‌నిపించేది కొద్ది సేపే అయినా వారి న‌ట‌నానుభ‌వం సినిమాకు హెల్ప‌యింది.

సైక‌లాజిక‌ల్ థ్రిల్ల‌ర్‌...

సింబా మెసేజ్‌తో కూడిన సైక‌లాజిక‌ల్ థ్రిల్ల‌ర్ మూవీ. క‌థ విష‌యంలో కొన్ని లోపాలు ఉన్నా జ‌గ‌ప‌తిబాబు, అన‌సూయ తో పాటు మిగిలిన యాక్ట‌ర్ల న‌ట‌న సింబా మూవీని నిల‌బెట్టింది.
