Phd in Sociology and Social Research

The PhD in Sociology and Social Research (SSR PhD) offers a 3 years advanced training aimed at educating highly qualified research professionals in the fields of sociology and social research. The program emphasizes solid theoretical foundations and in-depth knowledge of research methods and techniques specific for social research. Established in 1981 as the first PhD programme in Sociology in Italy, the Doctoral Programme  in Sociology and Social Research places a strong emphasis on theoretically driven empirical research. Doctoral candidates are encouraged to engage with the international academic community and to progressively publish their doctoral thesis in the format of scientific articles, ensuring both internal validation within the programme and external validation within the broader scientific community.

Training Activities

The training activities in the Doctoral Programme in Sociology and Social Research are designed to provide a comprehensive and structured learning experience over the course of three years. During the first year, doctoral students attend lectures and start to work on their PhD research. Lectures cover foundational theoretical concepts, research design and advanced research methods specific for the social sciences, encompassing qualitative, quantitative, mixed, and computational approaches. The second and third years are primarily devoted to research and writing. Throughout the PhD programme, doctoral students attend seminars organized by the Department of Sociology and Social Research to foster critical thinking and engage with contemporary research topics. In particular, doctoral students benefit from a dedicated seminar series where they practice being a discussant for the research presented by international renown speakers.

Monitoring and Evaluation

Throughout the programme, doctoral students benefit from the mentoring of two supervisors. The progress of doctoral students is closely monitored by the PhD board throughout the programme.       At the end of the first year, students are required to submit a research report and an activity report, and by the end of the second year, a mid-term research reports. Successful completion of these milestones is a prerequisite for advancing to subsequent years.      By the end of the third year, doctoral students are required to submit their thesis. The thesis undergoes a rigorous review process, which includes evaluation by three experts, two of whom are external specialists not affiliated with the PhD board.

Research Dissemination and International Mobility

Doctoral students are encouraged to actively participate in conferences, workshops and winter/summer schools and to spend at least 3 months at non-Italian research centers/universities to improve their international profile. For these activities, doctoral students are provided with research funds, as well as the support of a dedicated administrative office.

The interdisciplinary nature of the PhD programme together with its methodological focus and specific internationalisation experiences included in the programme, contributes to a unique training context for research, where students will be able to develop cutting-edge research on social and psychological phenomena in an innovative manner. The programme is structured in 2 curricula: one curriculum in  Sociology   and one in  Applied Psychology , each of them characterised by a specific selection process and a dedicated teaching and research pathway. The Sociology curriculum dwells in particular on three crucial areas of research in order to grasp the most significant discontinuities in contemporary societies:

  • Intercultural relations: mobility, religions, family, gender;
  • the relationship between society, technoscience and the media;
  • the relationship between institutional processes and the practices of production and reproduction of everyday life.

These three areas identify paths of study and theoretical reflection that can find multiple connections with many research themes, in the perspective of developing skills for the critical analysis and management of the processes that characterize today's contemporary complexity. Particular emphasis is placed on the cultural construction of social processes and practices; qualitative, quantitative and digital-based methodologies currently available in social sciences; comparative research approaches; internationalization of topics and research activities, through extended periods of research abroad. The Applied Psychology curriculum focuses on the psychological processes that characterise the several spheres of individual, relational and collective life, with the aim of developing theoretical, methodological and applicative knowledge required to carry out evidence-based psychological research and interventions. The objectives are structured around a diversified spectrum of topics, including: - the social sphere, with particular reference to the investigation of attitudes and behaviour, intergroup relations and various forms of prejudice, environment and culture, violence and perceptions of safety, individual dispositions, well-being and positive social relations, social construction of meaning - the work and organisational sphere, in relation to issues such as personnel selection, the centrality of work on a psychological level, organisational well-being; - the clinical and dynamic sphere, in relation to personal and relational distress and suffering, couple and parenting relationships, preventive, support and psychotherapeutic interventions. Particular emphasis is given to psychometric and methodological aspects, transversal to the various fields, involving training in relation to quantitative and qualitative methods, instruments for detecting and measuring psychological variables and constructs, formal models in psychology.

The main objective of the Department of Sociology and Social Research ’s PhD programmes is to contribute to the post-graduate education of Italian and international students interested in research. However, PhD programmes are also designed to offer a high-level route towards production, social and scientific opportunities in Italy and around the world. PhD Students are accepted onto courses following an application process open to all candidates in possession of old-style Degrees, Specialist Degrees, Master’s Degrees or a suitable academic qualification obtained abroad.

Every PhD course features a specific programme of study, established as part of a shared teaching plan designed to enable the communal management of educational proposals. Every programme aims to develop the knowledge and ability of students with regard to the standard research paradigms and methods in their chosen discipline, maintaining a constant focus on opportunities for cross-discipline learning.

Important networks with European and non-European Universities have been created and continue to be developed, as part of international agreements signed by each PhD Student. As well as the title of PhD, students can also obtain the title of “Doctor Europaeus” if they fulfil certain criteria.

  • Curriculum in Sociology

The Curriculum in Sociology trains highly specialised scholars to analyse social, cultural and political processes typical of highly complex societies , through the acquisition of sociological skills complemented by the contribution of the disciplines of political science, social statistics, economics and anthropology.

In particular, the interdisciplinary nature of this curriculum and its methodological approach, developed through specific internationalisation experiences, constitute a unique training context for research in Italy. In this context, it is possible to develop research projects that focus on the analysis of theoretical and empirical frameworks related to the forms of mobility of individuals, social and economic exchanges, interactions with technoscientific elements, with the media and the environment, and the spread of new and old forms of poverty and political processes in increasingly globalised societies. In the interdisciplinary perspective of this doctorate, multiple research methods are used in an innovative way to analyse and interpret social phenomena.

The curriculum in Sociology aims to provide  advanced training in methodological techniques and contemporary theories and approaches  to the analysis of cultural, communicative and political processes. Within the many themes and issues that characterise contemporary social sciences,  the curriculum in Sociology is characterised by four specific lines of research:

Institutional Processes and Practices of Social Production and Reproduction

Science, technology, innovation and media studies, socio-cultural change: identity, families, gender, communication and consumption.

  • Political sciences

These four areas identify paths of study and theoretical reflection with multiple links to several research topics, aimed at the analysis and management of contemporary social complexity. A priority is to maintain an educational context that takes into account how contemporary processes present themselves in continuously multiscalar forms. Particular emphasis is therefore placed on research in diverse social contexts, including at the supranational level and through extended periods of research abroad.

The curriculum aims to promote the interdisciplinarity of theoretical and methodological approaches by encouraging research projects that cut across traditional scientific and disciplinary fields. The Doctorate favours empirical and theoretically oriented analyses based on a predominantly interpretative approach. Innovative and multi-method research approaches that effectively develop the joint use of qualitative and quantitative methods, or that experiment with new models of analysis to cope with social and technological change are valued within the PhD.

More information about the research lines

Socio Cultural Change Identity Families Gender Communication and Consumption Department of Philosophy, Sociology, Pedagogy and Applied Psychology of the University of Padua. Human beings everywhere are now experiencing high levels of uncertainty and are therefore forced to develop a dialogical self. Based on this assumption, this line of research focuses on the analysis of social and cultural change through the following concepts: individual identity, social identity, social interactions, and globalisation/localisation in times of uncertainty. The main social phenomena and institutions considered in this line of research are: identity, families, gender, communication and consumption. The approach is rooted in a socio-cultural perspective.

Human beings everywhere are now experiencing high levels of

science technology innovation and media studies Department of Philosophy, Sociology, Pedagogy and Applied Psychology of the University of Padua. This research line aims to investigate the social and cultural implications of innovation processes, the role of science and technology in contemporary society and the centrality of the media and technologically mediated forms of communication. The main research fields include science & technology studies, the sociology of media and communication, media studies, the sociology of medicine and health, the sociology of the environment and, in general, perspectives that identify science, technology and the media as privileged areas for interpreting social change. The interpretative perspective cultivated in this research line promotes the study of science, technology and the media as drivers of social change and, at the same time, as outcomes of particular historical, social, cultural and economic conditions. Examples of topics addressed are the presence of technoscience in the public media sphere; the role of digital technologies in everyday life; the relationship between gender, sexuality and media; scientific practices in laboratories and research organisations; the processes of digitalisation of cultural industries; the forms of social interaction mediated by digital devices and platforms; the relationship between innovation and environmental sustainability; and the role of innovation in the field of biomedicine and health.

This research line aims to investigate the social and cultur

institutional processes and practices of social production and reproduction Department of Philosophy, Sociology, Pedagogy and Applied Psychology of the University of Padua. This line of research focuses on the heterogeneous set of practices, spaces and places where the activities involved in human, social and environmental production and reproduction take shape. In empirical terms, these social processes are investigated in a variety of settings, including labour and welfare systems, consumption, the structures of family life, and imprisonment, to cite only a few examples. In addition, they are scrutinized at the moment they take shape in space, given that they are processes that involve the territory and the environment, or in other words, the milieu where the material and, more generally, ecological underpinnings of social reproduction are created and transformed. These are areas where actors of different kinds interact—individual, interindividual and collective and public or private, with aims that may be market driven or otherwise—and which, as is the case in other fields of research, call for an analysis of complex dynamics that are neither mechanical nor linear.

This line of research focuses on the heterogeneous set of pr

Political science Department of Philosophy, Sociology, Pedagogy and Applied Psychology of the University of Padua. The research line of Political science encompasses a range of topics that address the institutional, economic, and communicative dimensions of political processes, providing insights into how political systems function, how policy decisions are made, and how they affect individuals and societies in the contemporary global world. In particular, the specific areas of this research line are: comparative public policy analysis, comparative analysis of democracies, comparative politics, political economy, European studies and political communication. These areas are addressed within the PhD programme through different types of theoretical approaches and research methods that characterise contemporary political science.

Programme Aims & Structure

The Ph.D. in Sociology and Methodology of Social Research is a joint programme of the Department of Social and Political Sciences at the University of Milan and the Department of Cultures, Politics and Society at the University of Turin.

The University of Milan is the administrative seat of the programme,  which is embedded in the Department of Social & Political Sciences, awarded as " Department of Excellence 2023-2027 " by the Italian Ministry of University & Research.

The Faculty includes scholars from the two universities of Milan and Turin as well as from other Italian Universities: University of Piemonte Orientale, University of Pavia, University of Bergamo, University of Bologna, University of Napoli Federico II, University of Trento, and University of Parma.

The SOMET Programme cooperates in several joint supervision and visiting programmes for both outgoing and incoming students with prestigious Universities in other European countries, such as Ku Leuven University (Belgium), Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Belgium), University of Amsterdam (The Netherlands), Pontificia Universidad Católica de Val Paraiso (Chile), and several French Universities, among which the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) in Paris.

Aims & Structure

The aim of the Ph.D. Programme in Sociology and Methodology of Social Research is to provide structured and advanced training in theoretically-guided empirical research across a wide range of sociological fields and to introduce students to current international issues in both qualitative and quantitative social research. Graduates will be able to compete successfully for positions as researchers (in public and private universities and research centres), skilled professionals and consultants in sociology to public agencies and international organizations and institutions in Italy and elsewhere in Europe.

The PhD Programme includes three main phases.

First phase: 1st year

The 1st year is spent partially at NASP Graduate School in Social and Political Sciences in Milan and partially at the Department of Cultures, Politics and Society in Turin .

Students attend advanced didactic courses in classical sociological theories and are introduced to the most up-to-date theoretical debates in both general and specific sociologies. Special attention is given to training in methodology, epistemology, research design, sampling, data collection and analysis. Students are expected to attend also international and peer seminars, conferences and summer schools.

During the first year, Ph.D. students also select a supervisor from the Faculty.

Second phase: 2nd and 3rd year

During the 2nd and the 3rd year , Ph.D. students undertake research, visiting periods and dissertation writing under the supervision of a member of the Faculty.

The 2nd year is partly spent on visiting a relevant university department abroad and is devoted to conducting the empirical research and the initial drafting of the thesis. Students will also attend additional courses and seminars in the fields they have selected for their research project. By the end of the 2nd year, each student is expected to produce an extended introductory paper for the dissertation.

The 3rd year is entirely devoted to the completion of the doctoral dissertation, under the supervision of one or more members of the Faculty. The final dissertation is submitted to the Faculty Board at the end of the 3rd year for admission to external review.

Third Phase

The third phase includes the review process, subsequent thesis revision & completion and, ultimately, the VIVA . The dissertation is reviewed by two external referees who may:

i) admit the candidate to the VIVA; ii) require amendments and revisions. In the latter case, up to six months may be allowed to revise the thesis before admission to the VIVA.

The examining committee is usually composed of three members.

The Programme's research areas

The research areas covered by the PhD Programme in Sociology and Methodology of Social Research comprise:

♦ Culture and consumption

♦  Digital society and the media

♦  Gender and sexuality

♦  Migration studies, multicultural societies and citizenship

♦  Science, technology, environment and urban studies

♦  Social inequalities and socio-economic stratification

♦  Social movements, collective action and civil society

♦  Sociology of family

♦  Sociology of health

♦  Sociology of politics, public opinion and voting

♦  Work and organizations

For each of these sociological areas/topics, the PhD Programme places particular emphasis on the integration of theories and methods.

The Social Science PGCE prepares students to teach the Social Sciences across the 14-19 age range in a flexible and exciting way. Tutors are committed to promoting interactive teaching and learning in their sessions; a collaborative ethos is encouraged so that PGCE students share materials, resources and ideas. The programme specialises in Sociology teaching, with some opportunities to teach other related curriculum subjects.

IOE, UCL's Faculty of Education and Society, has been ranked 1st for Education in the QS World University Rankings by Subject since 2014.

  • Entry requirements

First degree

A minimum of a lower second-class UK Bachelor’s degree or an overseas qualification of an equivalent standard with at least 50% Sociology content.

Preferably an A level in Sociology, plus an additional social science or humanities subject.

English Language and Mathematics at grade C or 4. We do not accept "applied" or "additional" GCSE subjects. Applicants who do not offer a GCSE in English Language or Mathematics may demonstrate an equivalent standard by completing a test via Equivalency Testing or A Star Equivalency and achieving at least a grade 4. For Mathematics, equivalency tests in Mathematics Foundation or Mathematics Higher with grade 4 are accepted. BTEC, Functional Skills or Access course qualifications are not accepted in place of GCSEs.

School experience

We recommend that you aim to gain some experience in a classroom prior to interview.

Skills tests

Trainees will be assured against a set of fundamental Mathematics and English skills by the end of their teacher training.

Relevant experience and background

Applicants whose degree qualifications are below a lower second-class standard may be admitted if they can demonstrate an appropriate academic background at Master's level and above and/or significant postgraduate experience in the relevant field.

Country-specific information, including details of when UCL representatives are visiting your part of the world, can be obtained from the International Students website .

International applicants can find out the equivalent qualification for their country by selecting from the list below. Please note that the equivalency will correspond to the broad UK degree classification stated on this page (e.g. upper second-class). Where a specific overall percentage is required in the UK qualification, the international equivalency will be higher than that stated below. Please contact Graduate Admissions should you require further advice.

The English language level for this programme is: Level 2

Further information can be found on our English language requirements page.

This programme is suitable for international students on a Student visa - study must be full-time, starting September.

DBS and occupational health

If you are made an offer you will be required to successfully complete Occupational Health and Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) Enhanced Disclosure checks. The Occupational Health Check is £90, and depending on your DBS requirements, there may be an additional fee of £15.00 if you can submit your DBS Enhanced Disclosure check via a UK Post Office. These checks are required to ensure you meet the Department for Education’s requirements for physical and mental health to teach, as well as assessing your suitability for access to children and vulnerable adults. More details can be found on the Entry requirements page.

About this course

We draw on current research at IOE, UCL's Faculty of Education and Society, and elsewhere to inform Social Science teaching, encouraging student teachers to engage with recent debates, literature and policy in the field. Our underlying aim is to develop students as reflective and highly skilled teachers. We promote themes of social justice and anti-discrimination in the curriculum and look at ways that the Social Sciences can advocate for a more equitable and just society.

The PGCE Social Sciences programme will feature four ‘Intensive Teaching & Practice’ (ITAP) sequences designed to establish and develop students’ Social Sciences teaching through the year.

Who this course is for

The Secondary PGCE full-time programme is suited to those wishing to gain Qualified Teaching Status (QTS) for teaching in a UK maintained (state-funded) school and who have fulfilled the appropriate entry requirements.

What this course will give you

Tutors on the Social Science PGCE are skilled classroom practitioners with extensive experience in secondary schools and colleges, as well as in subject leadership, educational research and consultancy. Students participate in a range of lectures, workshops and seminars designed to enhance their development as a teacher. They will also be supported with sessions from experts working in partnership schools and PGCE Alumni.

Our approach to ITAP is proudly subject-specific. Our ITAP sequences are embedded through the PGCE Social Sciences programme and will give students the opportunity to build their practice and confidence in pivotal areas of Sociology-specific pedagogy. Closely linking theory and practice, and enabling students to observe, deconstruct, plan, practice and progress in specific areas of teaching, these focus on:

  • Behavioural expectations and establishing a positive learning environment
  • Planning, developing, and sequencing sociological knowledge, concepts and skills
  • Teaching for assessment for 14-19 (KS4 & KS5)
  • Teaching for social justice and anti-discrimination in Social Sciences

During their teaching practice placements, students benefit from our partnership with over 300 secondary schools and colleges in Greater London and beyond, which enables each of our students to become a skilled and confident teacher in their chosen subject specialism.

The teacher you want to be

Graduates of the Secondary PGCE programme are highly employable and sought after by schools and colleges in London and further afield. Almost all student teachers secure their first teaching post by the time they complete the programme. Many graduates become a head of department or head of year within 2-5 years, frequently progressing to senior leadership in schools. Several are now headteachers. Others have developed their careers by becoming lead teachers in the classroom, engaging in further study and research or by writing, blogging and advising other teachers.

Overall, the Secondary PGCE Programme aims to provide a springboard into a rewarding career as a skilled subject-specialist teacher and future educational leader.

The tools of a great educator

  • Understanding of theory and subject or phase pedagogy
  • Creating a successful climate for learning, including behaviour management
  • Planning and teaching classes that engage pupils
  • Using assessment to inform planning
  • Working with the wider school community, including parents

Employability

Graduates of this programme are currently working across a broad range of areas. Some are working as Sociology and Psychology teachers, while others have jobs as heads of department and heads of year. Graduates in this area can also be found working as senior leaders and subject leads.

Accreditation

Students who successfully complete this programme will be recommended for Qualified Teacher Status (QTS).

The programme is taught through a mix of face-to-face and online sessions, (including keynote lectures and debates, presentations, discussions, and classroom group tasks), and a practical teaching element based in two schools. Students are required to read widely and to carry out written assignments in their own time.

Students will also take part in specific activities that provide the opportunity to focus on specific, pivotal areas of our curriculum. These opportunities (totalling 20 days of ITAP) will strengthen the link between theory and practice and provide students with specific feedback to support their progress in these pivotal areas.

We have identified four placement days for ITAP. The remaining 16 days for ITAP will take place during IOE timetabled time.

Assessment is through practical teaching, written assignments and portfolio tasks.

The Social Science PGCE course is a full-time programme. During university taught sessions, students are expected to be present all day. Students spend a minimum of 124 days on school placement and will be required to attend for full and entire school days, including pre- and post-teaching sessions as expected of a normal, full-time teacher at their placement school.

IOE pushed me out of my comfort zone and helped to bring out the best in me. I haven’t graduated as yet but I have already been offered two jobs in both of the schools that I undertook my placements in. Rhia Gibbs Social Science PGCE Q&A with Rhia Gibbs

You will undertake two modules at level 7 (Masters level) and one Professional Practice module at level 6. The level 7 credits can be carried forward onto some full Masters programmes at IOE (check individual programme requirements)

When you are not undertaking face-to-face teaching at IOE, you will be undertaking at least 124 days of school experience in two Partnership Schools.

Throughout the year, you will also participate in specific activities at IOE and in school that focus on important areas of our curriculum. These activities (totalling 20 days with at least 4 days in school) will help you to better understand links between theory and practice. They will also involve feedback from experts so that your progress is supported in these pivotal areas. These days form part of your 124 days on placement.

Compulsory modules

Please note that the list of modules given here is indicative. This information is published a long time in advance of enrolment and module content and availability are subject to change. Modules that are in use for the current academic year are linked for further information. Where no link is present, further information is not yet available.

Upon successful completion of 60 credits and the Professional Practice module, you will be awarded a PGCE in Social Science.

School placements

Students will spend at least 124 days in schools, working with Sociology or Psychology mentors who provide support through the two school placements. Social Science Student Teachers will teach their main social science subject (usually Sociology) at A level. At GCSE, most student teachers teach Sociology and some teach Psychology. In some placements there are opportunities to contribute to relevant vocational qualifications and Key Stage 3 Humanities.

The Professional Practice Module is assessed through these placements, associated tasks and an assessment and development portfolio.

During placement periods Students should be prepared to travel to and from each school placement. It should be noted that there is variation in how accessible schools are, and whether they have parking facilities. However, if you let us know of any particular accessibility needs you have, we will endeavour to accommodate them.

We ensure your placement will provide fulfilling and valuable experiences through:

  • A dedicated team who will identify the best schools for your placements
  • Support and guidance from your university tutor and your school-based mentor
  • School experience that allows you to progress at an appropriate pace for you
  • Reasonable travel times from your home to your school

Making the most of your placement

Teaching is a demanding profession and student teachers can feel nervous about school placements or anxious about the workload. Your tutor and school-based mentor will help you navigate your school experience, ensuring that you have the input you need. Empathetic feedback and discussion about your developing professional practice will support you to be successful.
