Practicing clinical psychology is a desired pursuit of many who aspire to work in the field of mental health. Clinical psychologists mainly work as highly trained professionals in the assessment, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of mental disorders. Although they do not prescribe medicine, clinical psychologists use psychological techniques to inspire change in their clients. There are numerous ways to become a clinical psychologist, but a common factor among all methods is a license issued by the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) that regulates and monitors services given to people with mental health problems.

Earlier they typically worked in hospital settings wherein a clinical overview is required. The situation now though has changed, they are also being functionally used in schools, colleges, NGOs, universities, and private clients.

Every psychology student has at least once considered this stream of specialisation as it is the most popular and desirable one for those wishing to have their own practice, etc. In order to obtain an RCI license, certain eligibility criteria have to be met, and only then can you practice as a clinical psychologist. Even without having a psychology background, you can acquire certain degrees/ diplomas to be eligible for RCI approval.

Let us take a look at the need for an RCI license and the process for obtaining it.

Why is an RCI license important?

The RCI is the central regulatory body that monitors mental health services provided in the country. The body is responsible for research development, training, recognition, standardisation of curriculum, recognition of institutions, and registration of professionals. RCI maintains the Central Rehabilitation Register of all qualified professionals who work in the field of rehabilitation and special education.

Thus, in order to run your own clinic or practice as a clinical psychologist, an RCI license is mandatory. Licensed professionals have the authority to issue certificates for mental illness and are also authorised to speak on the subject of declaring a person mentally fit for trial in a court of law.

There are serious consequences for people practicing clinical psychology without an RCI license. The regulatory body can prescribe punitive actions against such people.

Eligibility for RCI Application

At the onset, you may be from any background as far as your bachelor's is concerned, but a master’s degree in psychology is one of the main prerequisites for RCI approval. A bachelor’s degree in psychology is desirable but even if you are not a psychology grad, you can pursue a master’s from universities and colleges that do provide such flexibility.

A checklist for RCI approval is as follows:

1. Master’s in Psychology: As discussed above, this criterion is a necessity, and a regular mode of education is usually preferred. Although, as long as you do your post-grad degree from an RCI-recognised university, you’re good to go.

2. Professional Diploma/M.Phil. In Clinical Psychology: The aim of doing a post-grad diploma is to acquaint you with theoretical inputs and practical clinical experience. Students who complete this stage are also eligible for specialised posts in various health care settings including schools, community centres, rehabilitation units, nursing homes, and so on. On the other hand, an M.Phil. will train you in diagnostic, therapeutic, rehabilitative, and administrative services in the clinical setup. Diplomas are usually concluded within a year and an M. Phil may be for a year or two depending on the institute. In both cases, the institution must be recognised by RCI and must have been undertaken in a regular mode of education. As far as education is concerned, with this criterion, you are eligible to apply for RCI.

3. Documents and Guidelines: The procedure for RCI license is given in detail on the website of the regulatory body as well. Going through it before starting the process will be a great first step. These guidelines contain a list of documents that are to be filed along with the form. Ensure the documents are ready digitally (scanned copies) to be uploaded/ submitted online. Be very careful while following the rules on documents and submissions.

Step – by step process of obtaining an RCI license

Once you go to the RCI Registration website, here are the steps in brief:

1. An application under the RCI Act, 1992 will have to be filled with a form fee of Rs. 1000/. Make sure to fill in the details cautiously and as per the info in your M. Phil. completion certificate.

2. Submit the documents asked by the portal (the website takes out lists and guidelines regarding the applications). Make sure they are scanned.

3. Take out the form given by RCI and get it filled out from your M.Phil. (or PG Diploma) institute that is of course recognised by RCI. This will serve as the Certificate of Authentication.

4. Once submitted, you shall get a Provisional Registration Certificate that shall be valid for a year.

5. Make sure to send all the documents offline as well to the postal address of RCI within 10 days of submitting the forms.

6. Once your license is ready, the official website portal will update the status of your application. You can keep a check on the site and once you get it, you are now an RCI registered psychologist.

All things aside, it is important to gain enough expertise in psychology to practice as a clinical psychologist which is why the RCI demands specific requirements. Recently, the RCI also released a list of RCI-approved Diploma courses in Special Education. The changes and efforts are afoot and if this is your calling, falling these steps will ensure a place for you in the clinical practice. The opportunities are also on the rise once you have RCI registration, making this a crucial step in your professional career. However, if you don’t wish to practice as a clinical psychologist, you don’t have to get an RCI registration. Thus, make sure to find your path of focus and work toward that.

Clinical Psychology has always attracted many young minds to pursue it as a career. It is a popular branch of Psychology that deals with the assessment, diagnosis, evaluation, and intervention of Psychological Disorders.

Clinical Psychology revolves around the understanding and treatment of maladjustment issues of people to help them live a quality life. In simple terms, it is the application of psychological research and techniques in actual, “clinical settings.” 

Clinical Psychologists work in a variety of settings including hospitals, private practices, clinics, rehabilitation centers, academic institutions, etc. Clinical Psychology leans heavily towards psychopathology and offering mental health services to people from all walks of life. It is important to note that there’s a lack of labor and an immense need for clinical psychologists in India. And it is not a piece of cake to perform this job with ease! To be able to deliver psychological services proficiently, one should be highly skilled, qualified, and trained in the field.

The most crucial facet of the journey of becoming a clinical psychologist is to get a license from the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI). This requires one to pursue a course in clinical psychology which is recognized by RCI. This basic requirement is to complete post-graduation in Psychology and further pursue an M.Phil. in Clinical Psychology or PsyD. in Clinical Psychology. The prospects of both these courses are discussed in detail further in this article.

About Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI)

The Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) is a statutory government agency that operates under the Rehabilitation Council of India Act, which was adopted by the parliament in 1993 and amended in 2000. This body is responsible for providing services to differently-abled, disadvantaged and special education requirement communities. It is India’s only council with the authority to maintain a central rehabilitation register with vital information on all trained professionals working and operating in the relevant disciplines.

RCI is concerned with the regulation of training programs and policies, as well as the standardization and sustenance of training courses for professionals working in the field of rehabilitation. In addition, RCI also establishes minimum qualification requirements for professionals working with the differently-abled, recognizing numerous universities and medical institutions that offer, bachelor’s, Master’s degrees, Diploma courses, Certifications, etc. for it.

RCI is of utmost significance as it is necessary to gain RCI accreditation to serve as a professional in the field of Clinical Psychology. Professionals who are eligible to seek accreditation are clinical psychologists, special educators, rehabilitation psychologists, rehabilitation therapists, etc.

MPhil. In Clinical Psychology

The Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) in Clinical Psychology is a two-year advanced postgraduate program. It is designed as a rigorous program that includes thorough theoretical knowledge and hands-on clinical experience to equip students with the necessary skills for practice. During the course, the major emphasis is given to the in-depth detailed study of the discipline of Psychology and offering practical exposure to the trainees.

Various RCI-recognized institutes in India offer the course of M.Phil. in Clinical Psychology. Some institutes also provide the trainees with a basic stipend. To apply to these colleges/institutions, the students are required to appear in the respective entrance examination followed by an interview round (this round depends on the institution to institution, some of them have it as a mandatory procedure, whereas some rely only on the marks scored in the Entrance test). The eligibility criteria to enroll for this course is to hold an MA or an MSc. in Psychology with a minimum of 55% (50% for reserved categories, which also differs from institution to institution) from a UGC-accredited university.

The program offers a diverse range of opportunities to degree holders in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, multinational organizations, research, the education sector, and various other domains. One can also begin their private practice as a clinical psychologist after getting a license from the RCI.

About PsyD.

PsyD is the highest-level degree in psychology for clinical practice. In PsyD., the emphasis is given to the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of the clients. Research is not the major area of interest here. PsyD is more concerned with preparing skilled and qualified mental health professionals and clinicians.

PsyD or Doctorate of Psychology is a full-time, 4-year doctorate level program. It is a practice-oriented course. The first two years include training to promote personal and professional growth and the development of the trainee to function independently in evaluating problems and developing a treatment plan for patients. The third year includes completion of advanced proficiency in two sub-specialization areas chosen by the trainee from the list given by RCI which consists of behavioral therapy, psychoanalytic therapies, school psychology, psycho-oncology, etc. In the fourth year, one has to complete a rotation internship under a professional clinical psychologist who may or may not be a faculty member. In addition, an empirical research thesis has to be submitted by the trainee based on one of the chosen sub-specializations for advanced proficiency.

If one has completed an M.Phil. in Clinical Psychology, one can get admitted to this program through lateral entry (admission directly in the third year). Whereas, the students who hold a master’s degree in Psychology can enroll in the program through direct entry (all four years included). Only a few RCI-recognized institutes offer PsyD in India, admission to which is based upon an entrance examination that is held separately for direct and lateral entry candidates.

This program inculcates in the individual the required therapeutic skills, effective methods of identifying and dealing with clinical problems, and a sense of sensitivity towards the patient’s problems.

Difference between M.Phil. in Clinical Psychology and PsyD

The clashing factor between M.Phil. and PsyD is that one can start their clinical practice after completing M.Phil. in Clinical Psychology; however, it does not provide training in sub-specializations. Thus, to be a specialist in a specific field of Clinical Psychology, PsyD is required. It prepares one for a better understanding of diagnosis and clinical interventions for various psychological disorders.

Another distinguishing aspect is that the duration of the M.Phil. program is two years. In contrast, the duration of PsyD is four years. PsyD is the highest-level degree in Psychology, while M. Phil. is the advanced level intermediate course between master’s and Ph.D./PsyD.

PsyD or Ph.D.?

Ph.D. in Psychology is a more rigorous and longer period program than PsyD. In Ph.D., the emphasis is given to conducting scientific research that adds to the literature of the discipline. It contributes to developing new theories and revising the existing ones. In contrast, PsyD is centered more around the practice of Psychology. It focuses on the diagnosis and interventions of Psychological Disorders. Although PsyD does not emphasize research, professionals are considered the consumers of that research knowledge.

Ph.D. is the perfect option for the ones who are passionate about conducting scientific research. If one is more interested in providing psychological services than undertaking disciplinary research in psychology, PsyD is the option to go.

How to become a RCI Registered clinical psychologist – step by step guide

A clinical psychologist is highly trained in the assessment, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of mental, cognitive, emotional, and behavioral disorders. They work on a range of short-term and long-standing issues like relationship problems, work stress, regulating emotions and PTSD, substance dependence, dementia, etc. respectively. 

A clinical psychologist does not give medications, rather they use psychological techniques to bring about a change in their clients. 

They typically work in hospital settings; however this has changed now. Clinical psychologists can also function in schools, colleges and universities, NGOs, and private clinics. 

HOW TO BECOME A CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGIST?

1- BA/BSC IN PSYCHOLOGY

Pursuing graduation in psychology is important because it helps you in clearing the fundamentals of the course so that you can have a strong base. 

There are two kinds of courses offered for bachelor’s;

• BA (Hons) Psychology 
• BA (Hons) Applied psychology

BA(H)-Psychology is the science of behavior and mind, including conscious and unconscious phenomena, as well as feelings. It finds applications across all avenues of life, be it family, work, relationships, corporate spaces, or industries. 

BA(H)-Applied Psychology is the use of psychological principles and theories to overcome problems such as mental health, business management, education, health, product design, and law. The course also enables them to develop a critical, interactive, integrative understanding of the nature of applied psychology rather than just a knowledge base of historical theories and current research perspectives.

2- Pursue your post-graduation in clinical psychology 

All colleges conduct entrance tests for you to get admission to the PG program. You can pursue either MA or MSc in clinical psychology While some universities make it mandatory for you to have a bachelor’s in psychology with an aggregate percentage of 55%, other universities do allow you to sit for entrance without having a bachelor’s in the field. In your master’s, you will gain a thorough understanding while gaining exposure through the internships and the practicals that are designed in the course. You will get to visit hospitals and private clinics since clinical psychology focuses mainly on mental disorders. In the final semester, you will be required to write a paper under the guidance of your professor. You can choose to get it published as well.

3- Getting an RCI license

Mphil in the clinical psychology program teaches candidates about how to apply the gained knowledge to the field of clinical psychology.

To get the license, you are required to pursue your M.phil (Clinical Psychology).it is a 2-year course and to apply for this course, it is mandatory to have a master’s in psychology (exception in some colleges).  During the M.Phil, you will work under a senior psychologist and handle patients. The majority of the days are spent in the hospital and the rest in colleges. Hence, you will get hands-on experience in dealing with patients. Also, during the final year, you have to write a detailed paper with the guidance of your professor.

No, but you are eligible to get admission at RCI recognized institutes. If you have done an MA in Psychology from IGNOU, you will need to do an M.Phil or a Ph.D. from an RCI affiliated University or hospital, to get RCI registration. You can apply for RCI registration after completing the M.Phil or Ph.D.

The Department of Clinical Psychology runs a ‘Certificate course in Counselling’ with an intake capacity of 12 students per year. It carries out various assessments like IQ testing, Learning Disability Assessment, Personality Assessment and Diagnostic Psychometry. The department provides modern psychotherapeutic techniques such as Behaviour therapy, Cognitive Behavioural therapy, Dialectical Behaviour therapy, Rational Emotive Behaviour therapy, Motivational Enhancement therapy, Family therapy, Marital therapy and Supportive therapy. Apart from regular lectures, group activities, film screening, journal clubs and discussions on recent updates in therapy are also conducted. Outreach activities are also carried out by the department such as stress management workshops to the government & corporate sector. Learning Disability workshops for school teachers are also conducted. Students from different colleges in the state also come for internship and observation postings. They are also involved in research on psychological issues.

Maharashtra Institute of Mental Health has well equipped clinical psychology department. The department of clinical Psychology works in the area of patient care, teaching, clinical services, resource development and community services. It has a major role in the process of disability certification for Intellectual Disability, Learning Disability, Psychometric assessments and psycho-therapeutic work-up. Apart from regular lectures, group activities, film screening, discussions on recent updates in therapy are also conducted. To enhance the subject knowledge and practical skills of the students, department organizes workshops and guest lectures where experts from the field are invited. Outreach activities are also carried out by the department such as stress management workshops to the Government & Corporate sector. Learning Disability workshops for school teachers are also conducted. Students from different colleges of Maharashtra are provided observership by the department.

The Department has started M.Phil in Clinical Psychology from Academic year 2021-2022 with recognition by Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI), New Delhi and is affiliated with Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS), Nashik.

The aim of this course is to prepare the trainee to function as a qualified professional Clinical Psychologist in the areas of mental and physical health by offering Diagnostic, Therapeutic, Rehabilitative, Administrative services, and to work towards promoting the well-being and quality-of-life of individuals.

• Diagnose mental health problems.
• Conceptualize specific adult and child mental health problems within a psychological framework, giving due consideration to psychosocial/ contextual factors, and carryout relevant treatment/management.
• Apply psychological principles and techniques in rehabilitating persons with mental health problems and disabilities.
• Work with the psychosocial dimensions of physical diseases, formulate and undertake focused/targeted psychosocial interventions.
• Work with community to promote health, quality-of-life and psycho-logical well-being.
• Undertake research in the areas of clinical psychology such as, mental health/illness, physical health/diseases and relevant societal issues viz. misconception, stigma, discrimination, social tension, gender construction, life style etc.
• Undertake responsibilities connected with teaching and training in core and allied areas of Clinical Psychology.
• Undertake administrative and supervisory/decision-making responsibilities in mental health area.
• Provide expert testimony in the court of law assuming different roles.
• Minimum educational requirement for admission to this course will be 2 years M.A./M.Sc. degree in Psychology from a university recognized by the UGC with a minimum of 55% marks in aggregate.
• For SC/ST category, minimum of 50% marks in aggregate is essential, as per GOI.
• Student should be domicile of Maharashtra State.

Certificate Course in Counseling

The department of clinical psychology runs Certificate Course in Counseling since 1993-94. It is the only Government approved post P.G. Course in the state of Maharashtra. This one year course also provides opportunity for the students to apply their practical skills and knowledge during the 3 months of internship under the supervision of the faculty after the successful completion of the course.

Observership to different postgraduate students of psychology discipline

Dept. of Clinical Psychology also provides observership for psychology students from different universities and colleges. Students who have completed or doing their post-graduation in Psychology can apply for observership. During the observership, students are posted to Psychiatry OPD, Psychology OPD and Psychiatry ward.

Training workshops on learning disability for school teachers and principals

As a part of awareness of learning disabilities and related academic difficulties, Dept. of clinical Psychology conducts various training and awareness programs for teachers and principals of different government and private schools in Pune.

Community Services

Training workshops on stress management for school students and other professionals: Till date, various workshops were arranged by dept. of clinical psychology for students appearing for their board exams and also for students of undergraduates and post graduates. There were also many training programs arranged for health care workers and other frontline workers like staff nurses, resident doctors and police personals, in the difficult time of COVID-19 pandemic.

PDCP Admission Open 2024 | Professional Diploma Clinical Psychology

Various institutes have opened admissions for the 1-year RCI-recognized Professional Diploma in Clinical Psychology (PDCP) for the academic session 2024-25. Eligible candidates may apply online for PDCP for these institutions with the link provided in this article.

RCI designed the Professional Diploma in Clinical Psychology (PDCP) as an intensive one-year diploma program to provide its trainees with comprehensive practical skills and hands-on experience in Clinical Psychology.

Graduates of this 1-year regular diploma program are eligible to register under the Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) as Clinical Psychologists (Associate).

This course allows you to function as:

1. To practice as a Clinical Psychologist Associate with RCI registration.

2. Carry out the psychological assessment to reduce psychological distress & promote psychological well-being among the population.

3. Interview patients, and conduct assessments or diagnostic tests to address mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders.

Eligibility Criteria of PDCP for all institutes:

MA/ MSc in Psychology/ Clinical/ Applied Psychology from a university recognized by the UGC with a minimum of 55% marks in aggregate.

For the SC/ ST/ OBC/ PwD category, a minimum of 50% in aggregate is essential for admission to all the RCI-recognized Universities.
