‘మ హానటి’, ‘కనులు కనులు దోచాయంటే’, ‘సీతారామం’ వంటి విజయవంతమైన చిత్రాలతో తెలుగు ప్రేక్షకుల్ని మెప్పించిన నటుడు దుల్కర్‌ సల్మాన్‌. అందుకే ఆయన నుంచి ఓ సినిమా వస్తుందంటే తెలుగు వారు ఆ వైపు ఓ కన్నేస్తుంటారు. ఇప్పుడాయన ‘కింగ్‌ ఆఫ్‌ కొత్త’ (కొత్త అంటే మలయాళంలో టౌన్‌ అని అర్థం) అంటూ బాక్సాఫీస్‌ ముందుకొచ్చారు. దుల్కర్‌ హీరోగా నటిస్తూ.. స్వయంగా నిర్మించిన చిత్రమిది. మరి టీజర్, ట్రైలర్లతో ఆసక్తిరేకెత్తించిన ఈ సినిమా తెరపై ఎలాంటి అనుభూతి అందించింది? ప్రేక్షకుల నుంచి ఎలాంటి ఫలితాన్ని అందుకుంది?

కథేంటంటే: స్వాతంత్య్రానికి పూర్వం ఎలాంటి విచారణ లేకుండా నేరస్థుల్ని శిక్షించడానికి బ్రిటిషర్లు ఎంచుకున్న ఊరు కోతా. ఆ ఊరు తర్వాతి కాలంలో అన్యాయాలకు.. అక్రమాలకు నిలయంగా మారుతుంది. ఆ నేర సామ్రాజ్యాన్ని మకుటం లేని చక్రవర్తిలా ఏలుతుంటాడు రాజు (దుల్కర్‌ సల్మాన్‌). తనకు స్నేహితుడు కన్నా (షబీర్‌) అంటే చాలా ఇష్టం. చిన్నప్పుడే తల్లిదండ్రులు రాజును దూరం పెడితే.. అండగా నిలిచింది కన్నానే. అలాగే రాజుకు తార (ఐశ్వర్య లక్ష్మీ) అంటే ప్రేమ. ఆమె ప్రేమ కోసం కోతాలో గంజాయి, డ్రగ్స్‌ లేకుండా చేస్తాడు రాజు. అయితే వీళ్లిద్దరి జీవితంలోకి మరో వ్యక్తి ప్రవేశించడంతో వీరి ప్రేమలో సమస్యలు మొదలవుతాయి. తార వల్ల మోసపోయానన్న బాధతో రాజు మద్యానికి బానిసవుతాడు. అదే సమయంలో కోతాను హస్తగతం చేసుకోవడానికి ప్రత్యర్థి రంజిత్‌ (చెంబన్‌ వినోద్‌ జోస్‌)తో కలిసి కుట్ర పన్నుతాడు కన్నా. ఓవైపు ప్రేయసి చేతిలో.. మరోవైపు స్నేహితుడి చేతిలో మోసపోయిన రాజు అకస్మాత్తుగా కోతాను వదిలి వెళ్లిపోతాడు. ఆ తర్వాత కోతాను కన్నా తన చేతుల్లోకి తీసుకొని రావణ కాష్ఠంలా మార్చేస్తాడు. (king of kotha review in telugu) అయితే కొన్నాళ్లకు ఆ ఊరిలోకి అడుగు పెట్టిన సీఐ షాహుల్‌ (ప్రసన్న).. కన్నా ఆట కట్టించేందుకు మళ్లీ రాజును కోతాకు తిరిగి రప్పిస్తాడు. మరి ఆ తర్వాత ఏమైంది? రాజు తిరిగి వచ్చాక కన్నాకు ఎలా బుద్ధి చెప్పాడు? తన చెల్లి (అనికా సురేంద్రన్‌)ని ప్రేమ పేరుతో మోసం చేయాలనుకున్న కన్నా బావమరిది జీనూ (శరణ్‌ శక్తి)ని రాజు ఏం చేశాడు? తారతో అతని ప్రేమ కథ ఏమైంది? కోతాలో తన జెండా పాతాలనుకున్న రంజిత్‌ ఏమయ్యాడు?తెలియాలంటే సినిమా చూడాల్సిందే!

ఎలా సాగిందంటే: 1980ల నేపథ్యంలో సాగే రొటీన్‌ గ్యాంగ్‌స్టర్‌ సినిమా ఇది. కోతా అనే ఓ కల్పిత పట్టణంలో కథ జరుగుతుంటుంది. తండ్రిలా రౌడీ అవ్వాలనుకున్న రాజు అనే కుర్రాడు తన కల నెరవేర్చుకునేందుకు ఏం చేశాడు? కోతాను ఏలే క్రమంలో ఎలాంటి సవాళ్లు ఎదుర్కొన్నాడు? ప్రేమ, స్నేహం విషయాల్లో ఎలాంటి ఎదురు దెబ్బలు తిన్నాడు? ఆఖరికి తన లక్ష్యం సాధించాడా? లేదా? అన్నది క్లుప్తంగా చిత్ర కథాంశం. పైకి ఇదొక గ్యాంగ్‌స్టర్‌ సినిమాలా కనిపించినా.. ఇందులో చాలా కోణాలు కనిపిస్తాయి. ప్రేమ, స్నేహం, చెల్లి సెంటిమెంట్, ఫ్యామిలీ ఎమోషన్స్‌.. ఇలా బోలెడన్ని అంశాల్ని దీంట్లో మేళవించే ప్రయత్నం చేశాడు దర్శకుడు. (king of kotha review) అయితే వీటన్నింటినీ చక్కగా ముడిపెట్టి రుచికరమైన వంటకం సిద్ధం చేయడంలో తడబడ్డాడు. కోతా ప్రపంచాన్ని.. అందులోని కన్నా భాయ్‌ అకృత్యాల్ని పరిచయం చేస్తూ సినిమాని ఆరంభించిన తీరు ఫర్వాలేదనిపిస్తుంది. (king of kotha review in telugu) అక్కడి నుంచి ఈ కథలోని ఒక్కో పాత్రను పరిచయం చేస్తూ నెమ్మదిగా కథలోకి తీసుకెళ్లే ప్రయత్నం చేశాడు దర్శకుడు. షాహుల్‌ సీఐగా కోతాకు రావడం... వచ్చీ రాగానే కన్నాకు వార్నింగ్‌ ఇవ్వాలని ప్రయత్నించి భంగపడటం.. కన్నాను దెబ్బ కొట్టాలన్న ప్రయత్నంలో అతను రాజు గురించి తెలుసుకోవడంతో అసలు కథ మొదలవుతుంది. అయితే సినిమా ఆరంభమైన 20నిమిషాలకు హీరో ఎంట్రీ ఇచ్చినా కథ ఏమాత్రం ముందుకు వెళ్తున్నట్లు అనిపించదు. ప్రతి అంశాన్నీ డిటైల్డ్‌గా చెప్పాలన్న ప్రయత్నంలో దర్శకుడు ప్రథమార్ధం మొత్తాన్ని పాత్రల పరిచయానికే వాడేసుకున్నాడు. దుల్కర్‌ పరిచయ సన్నివేశాలతో పాటు రంజిత్‌కు తను వార్నింగ్‌ ఇచ్చే ఎపిసోడ్‌లు ఆకట్టుకుంటాయి.

ఐశ్వర్యతో ప్రేమకథలో ఏమాత్రం ఫీల్‌ కనిపించదు. మధ్యలో ఫ్రెండ్‌షిప్‌ నేపథ్యంలోనూ.. చెల్లి అనుబంధాల నేపథ్యంలోనూ కొన్ని సన్నివేశాలు అల్లుకున్నాడు దర్శకుడు. కానీ, ఏవీ భావోద్వేగభరితంగా అనిపించవు. రాజు - తారల ప్రేమకథలోకి మూడో వ్యక్తి ప్రవేశించాక కథ మలుపు తిరుగుతుంది. అదే సమయంలో కన్నా కూడా రాజును వెన్నుపోటు పొడిచే ప్రయత్నం చేయడంతో కథ మరింత రసవత్తరంగా మారుతుంది. ఈ క్రమంలో విరామానికి ముందొచ్చే యాక్షన్‌ ఎపిసోడ్‌ ఆకట్టుకుంటుంది. (king of kotha review) అయితే ప్రథమార్ధం ఆకట్టుకున్న కథ ద్వితీయార్ధంలో పూర్తిగా గాడి తప్పింది. యాక్షన్‌కు ఇచ్చినంత ప్రాధాన్యత కథకు ఇవ్వకపోవడంతో ఏ దశలోనూ ప్రేక్షకులు సినిమాతో కనెక్ట్‌ అవ్వని పరిస్థితి కనిపిస్తుంది. (king of kotha review in telugu) నిజానికి ద్వితీయార్ధం ఆరంభమైన కాసేపటికే కథ ముగించే అవకాశం ఉంది. కానీ, దర్శకుడు అనవసరమైన ఎపిసోడ్లతో మరో గంట పాటు ప్రేక్షకుల సహనానికి పరీక్ష పెట్టాడు. హీరో.. విలన్‌కు మధ్య వచ్చే సుదీర్ఘ పోరాటాలు ఓ దశ దాటాక విసుగు తెప్పిస్తాయి. శుభం కార్డు కోసం వేచి చూసేలా చేస్తాయి. పతాక సన్నివేశాలు ఊహకు తగ్గట్లుగా ఉంటాయి. ఈ కథలో చాలా పాత్రలకు సరైన ముగింపు ఇవ్వకుండానే సినిమాని ముగించారు.

ఎవరెలా చేశారంటే: రాజు పాత్రలో మాస్‌ గెటప్పులో దుల్కర్‌ సల్మాన్‌ చాలా కొత్తగా కనిపించారు. తనదైన నటనతో ప్రేక్షకుల్ని ఆద్యంతం కట్టిపడేశారు. యాక్షన్, ఎమోషనల్‌ సన్నివేశాల్ని తన అనుభవంతో రక్తి కట్టించారు. కథలో కీలకమైన కన్నా పాత్రలో షబీర్‌ ఆకట్టుకునేలా నటించాడు. ఈ పాత్రను దర్శకుడు సరైన స్పష్టత లేకుండా తీర్చిదిద్దుకున్నట్లు అనిపిస్తుంది. ఐశ్వర్య లక్ష్మీ, అనికా సురేంద్రన్, ప్రసన్న తదితరుల పాత్రలు పరిధి మేరకు ఉన్నాయి. (king of kotha review in telugu)  స్పోకెన్‌ ఇంగ్లిష్‌ మాట్లాడుతూ రంజిత్‌ పాత్రలో చెంబన్‌ వినోద్‌ పంచిన హాస్యం అక్కడక్కడా నవ్వించింది. దర్శకుడు ఎంచుకున్న కథలో కొత్తదనం లేదు. కథలోని ఏ ఒక్క ఎమోషన్‌ను పూర్తిస్థాయిలో తెరపైకి తీసుకు రాలేకపోయారు. ఓ దశ దాటాక యాక్షన్‌ ఎపిసోడ్లు బోర్‌ కొట్టించేశాయి. నిడివిని అరగంటకు పైగా తగ్గించే అవకాశముంది. జేక్స్‌ బిజోయ్‌ నేపథ్య సంగీతం సినిమాకి ప్రధాన ఆకర్షణగా నిలిచింది. యాక్షన్‌ సన్నివేశాల్లో తన సంగీతంతో హీరోయిజాన్ని అద్భుతంగా ఎలివేట్‌ చేశారాయన. 80ల వాతావరణాన్ని చూపించేలా ప్రొడక్షన్‌ డిజైనర్, సినిమాటోగ్రాఫర్‌ చూపించిన పనితనం ఆకట్టుకుంటుంది. నిర్మాణ విలువలు ఉన్నతంగా ఉన్నాయి.

King Of Kotha Review: మహానటి, సీతా రామం సినిమాలతో తెలుగు ప్రేక్షకులకు దగ్గరైన దుల్కర్ సల్మాన్ హీరోగా కింగ్ ఆఫ్ కొత్త సినిమా తెరకెక్కింది. దుల్కర్ సల్మాన్ కి లభించిన పాన్ ఇండియా ఇమేజ్ను ఆధారంగా చేసుకుని ఈ సినిమాని తెలుగు, తమిళ , కన్నడ , మలయాళ భాషల్లో రిలీజ్ చేశారు. మలయాళంలో ఒక టాప్ డైరెక్టర్ కుమారుడైన అభిలాష్ డైరెక్టర్ గా లాంచ్ అవుతున్న సినిమాకి దుల్కర్ సల్మాన్ నిర్మాతగా వ్యవహరించడంతో ఈ సినిమా మీద అందరిలో ఆసక్తి పెరిగింది. గురువారం నాడు ప్రేక్షకుల ముందుకు వచ్చిన ఈ సినిమా ఎంత వరకు ఆకట్టుకుంది అనేది రివ్యూలో చూద్దాం.

కథ: క్రిమినల్స్ ఆగడాలతో అట్టుడికిపోతున్న కొత్త అనే ప్రాంతానికి కొత్తగా ఇన్స్పెక్టర్(ప్రసన్న)గా వచ్చి అక్కడ పరిస్థితికి కారణం కన్నా భాయి(షబీర్) అని తెలుసుకుంటాడు. తన స్టైల్లో అతని ఆగడాలు అరికట్టాలని ప్రయత్నించి అతన్ని అంతం చేయాలని నిర్ణయించుకుంటాడు. అతన్ని అంతం చేయాలి అంటే అది రాజు(దుల్కర్) ఒక్కడి వల్లే సాధ్యమవుతుంది అని సబ్ ఇన్స్పెక్టర్ టోనీ (గోకుల్ సురేష్ గోపి) వల్ల తెలుసుకుంటాడు. పక్కాగా ప్లాన్ చేసి రాజుని కొత్త ప్రాంతానికి మళ్ళీ రప్పించిన ఇన్స్పెక్టర్ కన్నా భాయ్ కథ ముగించాడా? చిన్ననాటి నుంచి కలిసిమెలిసి పెరిగిన రాజు కన్నా భాయ్ మధ్య గొడవలు ఎందుకు జరిగాయి? నిజంగానే ఇన్స్పెక్టర్ ప్లాన్ ప్రకారం వీరిద్దరి మధ్య జరిగిన గొడవ వల్ల ఎవరు మరణించారు? చివరికి అసలేం జరిగింది అనేది ఈ కింగ్ ఆఫ్ కొత్త అనే సినిమా కథ.

విశ్లేషణ: కింగ్ ఆఫ్ కొత్త అనే సినిమా చూసిన తర్వాత ఇదేమీ కొత్త కథ కాదు అనే విషయం ఈజీగా అర్థమవుతుంది. ఊరిలో అల్లరి చిల్లరగా తిరిగే యువకుడు డాన్ గా ఎదగడం, తర్వాత అప్పటి వరకు అతని స్నేహితుడిగా ఉన్న వ్యక్తి మోసం చేయడంతో వారిద్దరి మధ్య గొడవలు జరగటం, తర్వాత వారిద్దరూ కొట్టుకుని వారిలో ఒకరు బతకడం లాంటి కాన్సెప్ట్ తో ఎన్నో సినిమాలు వచ్చాయి. ఈ సినిమా కూడా దాదాపుగా అదే కోవలో సాగుతుంది. కొత్త అనే ఒక క్రియేట్ చేయబడిన ప్రాంతంలో గ్యాంగ్స్టర్ డ్రామాగా దీన్ని తెరకెక్కించారు. ఈమధ్య కాలంలో దుల్కర్ సల్మాన్ కి వస్తున్న పాన్ ఇండియా ఇమేజ్ ని వాడుకొని ఈ సినిమాని ఇతర భాషల్లో సైతం రిలీజ్ చేసేందుకు ప్రణాలికలు సిద్దం చేసినట్టు అనిపించింది. ఎందుకంటే ఈ సినిమా కేవలం మలయాళ ఆడియన్స్ కోసమే చేసినట్టు అనిపించింది. తెలుగు ఆడియన్స్ లేదా కన్నడ, తమిళ ఆడియన్స్ ఇలాంటి గ్యాంగ్స్టర్ డ్రామా సినిమాలు ఎన్నో చూశారు. అయితే దుల్కర్ ను మొదటిసారిగా ఒక పూర్తి స్థాయి మాస్ పాత్రలో చూపించింది ఈ కింగ్ ఆఫ్ కొత్త అనే సినిమా. రౌడీయిజం చేసే తండ్రిని చూసి రౌడీలా పెరిగిన కొడుకు కుటుంబం నుంచి దూరమై పూర్తిగా ఆ రౌడీయిజానికి ఎలా బానిస అయ్యాడు ? జీవితాన్ని దానికే అంకితం చేసి చివరికి ప్రేమ వల్ల మారాడు అనేది ఈ స్థూలంగా ఈ కింగ్ ఆఫ్ కొత్తలో చూపించారు. దారుణమైన విషయం ఏమిటంటే సినిమా టైటిల్ ని తెలుగులో కింగ్ ఆఫ్ కొత్త అని అనౌన్స్ చేశారు. కానీ సినిమా ఆద్యంతం కింగ్ ఆఫ్ కొత్త పేరుతో నడుస్తూ ఉంటుంది. ట్రాన్స్లేషన్ చేసేటప్పుడు తేడా పడిందో లేక డబ్బింగ్ చెప్పేటప్పుడు తేడా పడిందో తెలియదు కానీ కొత్త – కొత్త రెండింటిలో కరెక్ట్ పదం ఏమిటి అనే విషయం మీద సరైన క్లారిటీ అయితే లేదు.

ఎవరు ఎలా చేశారు అంటే ఈ సినిమాను మలయాళం సినీ పరిశ్రమలో మంచి పేరు ఉన్న జోషి అనే డైరెక్టర్ కొడుకు డైరెక్టర్ గా లాంచ్ అవుతూ తెరకెక్కించాడు. అభిలాష్ జోషి డైరెక్షన్లో ఈ కింగ్ ఆఫ్ కొత్త మనకి రొటీన్ అనిపిస్తుంది. రెగ్యులర్ గ్యాంగ్ స్టర్ డ్రామా అయినా అబ్బా భలే సీన్ పడిందే అనుకునే లోపే నిద్ర పుచ్చే సీన్స్ ఇబ్బంది పెడతాయి. ఈ సినిమాను అరగంట ముందే ముగించొచ్చు కానీ దర్శకుడు ఎందుకో పట్టుబట్టి ప్రతీ సీన్ నెమ్మదిగా తెరకెక్కించాడు. ఈ సినిమా నిడివి తగ్గించుంటే కచ్చితంగా దుల్కర్ సల్మాన్ కెరీర్లో మాంచి కమర్షియల్ సినిమా అయ్యుండేది, దర్శకుడికి కూడా పర్ఫెక్ట్ లాంచింగ్ అయి ఉండేది కానీ ఆ ఛాన్స్ చేతులారా మిస్ చేసుకున్నాడు దర్శకుడు అభిలాష్ జోషీ. చేజేతులా ల్యాగ్ సీన్స్ పెట్టి మాకు ఎందుకు ఈ కొత్త అనిపించేలా చేశాడు. ఒకపక్క యాక్షన్ మరోపక్క ఫ్యామిలీ సెంటిమెంట్ ఏవీ వర్కౌట్ అవలేదు. అన్నీ సగం సగం మిక్స్ చేసి ఆల్ మిక్చర్ చేయడంతో కొత్త ఇబ్బందికరంగా సాగింది. అయితే తెలుగు డబ్బింగ్ విషయంలో జాగ్రత్త పడాల్సింది. ఈ సినిమాకు మరో హీరో జేక్స్ బిజాయ్ బ్యాగ్రౌండ్ స్కోర్.. కొన్ని సీన్స్ కేవలం ఆయన రీ రికార్డింగ్ వల్లే ఎలివేట్ అయ్యాయి. నటీనటుల పనితీరు విషయానికి వస్తే దుల్కర్ సల్మాన్ మరోసారి అదరగొట్టాడు. తెలుగులో కూడా సొంత డబ్బింగ్ సినిమాకు ప్లస్.. సార్పట్టాలో డాన్సింగ్ రోజ్‌గా మెప్పించిన షబ్బీర్ ఇందులోనూ విలన్‌గా బాగున్నాడు. ఐశ్వర్య లక్ష్మీ, నైలా ఉష, చెంబన్ వినోద్, ప్రసన్న , శరణ్ శక్తి, అనిఖా వంటి వారు తమ తమ పాత్రల పరిధి మేర నటించారు.

ఆమధ్య మహానటి, ఈ మధ్య సీతారామం సూపర్ హిట్ అవ్వడంతో డుల్కర్ సల్మాన్ సినిమాలంటే తెలుగు ప్రేక్షకులకి కొన్ని అంచనాలుంటున్నాయి. ప్రతి సారి అంత సాఫ్ట్ సినిమాలు కాకుండా కాస్తంత ఫ్లావర్ మార్చినా ఇతని సినిమాలు చూడడానికి థియేటర్స్ వైపు అడుగులేసేవాళ్లుంటున్నారు. "కింగ్ ఆఫ్ కొత్త" పేరుతో ప్యాన్ ఇండియా చిత్రంగా విడుదలైన ఈ సినిమాలో ఏముందో చూద్దాం.

1996లో కొత్త అనే ఊరిలో మొదలై, అక్కడే 1986 నాటి ఫ్లాష్ బ్యాక్ కి వెళ్లి, మధ్యలో లక్నోని టచ్ చేసి చివరికి సిమ్లాలో తేలే కథ ఇది. 

1996లో కొత్తకి ఒక కొత్త సీఐ (ప్రసన్న) వస్తాడు. అక్కడతనికి కన్న (షబీర్) అనే డాన్ గురించి తెలుస్తుంది. ఆ ఊరంతా అతని కబ్జాలో ఉంటుంది. అతనే ప్రభుత్వం, అతనే శాసనం అన్నమాట. ఈ సీఐ ఆ కన్న ని తలబడే క్రమంలో కథ 1986 కి వెళ్తుంది. రాజు (డుల్కర్), కన్నా చిన్ననాటి మిత్రులు. ఇద్దరూ ఒకటే గ్యాంగులో ఉంటారు. కానీ కొన్ని అభిప్రాయబేధాల వల్ల ఇద్దరూ విడిపోవడం, రాజు చేతిలో కన్నా చావు దెబ్బ తినడం, రాజుపై కన్నా తన ప్రతీకారాన్ని తీర్చుకునే ప్రయత్నం..మళ్లీ 1996లో రాజు కొత్తాకి తిరిగిరావడం, ఆ పైన ఏం జరుగుతుందనేని క్లైమాక్స్. 

టైటిల్లో "కొత్త" ఉన్నా కథలో పెద్దగా "కొత్త"దనం ఏమీ లేదు కదా! పోనీ కథనమో? అది చెప్పక్కర్లేదు. 

తెర మీద పాత్రలు భావోద్వేగాలకు లోనౌతున్నా ప్రేక్షకులకి చీమకుట్టినట్టు కూడా అనిపించకుండా, తెర మీద ఎవరు చస్తున్నా ప్రేక్షకులకి ఎలాంటి ఎమోషన్ కలగకుండా, కామెడీ లాంటిది జరుగుతున్నా కనీసం సెంటిమీటరు నవ్వు కూడా తెప్పించకుండా..ఉత్సాహంగా కూర్చున్న జనాన్ని జీవచ్ఛవాల్లా మార్చిన ట్యాలెంటు ఈ దర్శకుడిది. తన మానాన తాను కథ చెప్పుకుపోంటూ పోవడం తప్పితే అసలా కథనం తెర మీద ఎలా ఉంటుందో ప్రేక్షకుల షూస్ లో నిలబడి ఊహించలేకపోయాడు దర్శకుడు.

అన్నీ పాత చింతకాయ సీన్లు, ప్రెడిక్టిబుల్ ఫ్లాష్ బ్యాకులు, పేలవమైన ట్విస్టులు, ట్రోలింగ్ చేసుకోదగ్గ క్లైమాక్స్..వెరసి ఈ చిత్రం చిత్రహింసలు పెడుతుంది. 

ఒక హీరో, ఒక హీరోయిన్, ఒక విలన్, ఒక ఫ్లాష్ బ్యాక్..ఇంతకు మించి వివరంగా దీని గురించి చెప్పాలన్నా కూడా నీరసం ఆవరిస్తుంది. 

ఎంతసేపూ స్లో మోషన్ సీన్లు, నోట్లో సిగరెట్లు; హీరోకే కాకుండా ప్రతి క్యారెక్టరుకీ ఎంతో కొంత ఇవే బిల్డప్పులు. 

ఇక డెడ్ బాడీ దగ్గర ఒక సీనుంటుంది. అది కామెడీయా, సీరియస్సా అర్ధం చెప్పినవాళ్లకి ఐన్ స్టీన్ కంటే ఎక్కువ ఐక్యూ ఉందని నిర్ధారించొచ్చు. 

డుల్కర్ సల్మాన్ నటన గురించి కొత్తగా చెప్పక్కర్లేదు. కానీ ఇందులో తన క్యారెక్టర్ డిజైన్ కొత్తగా ఉన్నా నేపథ్యంలో డెప్త్ లేకపోవడం వల్ల తేలిపోయినట్టయ్యింది. కేవలం క్లాస్ ఇమేజ్ నుంచి పక్కకొచ్చి తనలోని వైవిధ్యం చూపించుకోవడానికి ఈ మాస్ సినిమా చేసినట్టుందంతే.

ఐశ్వర్య లక్ష్మి పాత్ర ఫోర్స్డ్ గా ఉంది...హీరోయిన్ ఉండాలి కాబట్టి అన్నట్టుగా!

కన్నాగా కనిపించిన షబీర్ ది మొదట్లో ప్రామిసింగ్ పాత్రలాగ అనిపిస్తుంది. కానీ క్రమంగా అది కూడా వీకౌతూ వచ్చింది. 

మంజుగా నైలా ఉష పవర్ఫుల్ గా కనిపించింది. ఆమె ట్రాక్ ఓకే కానీ కథనంలో సరిగా బ్లెండ్ కాలేదు. 

బట్లర్ ఇంగ్లీష్ తో నవ్వించే ప్రయత్నం చేసిన చంబన్ ఓకే. హీరో తండ్రిగా షమ్మి తిలకన్ పాత్ర బాగుంది. 

సాంకేతికంగా ఈ సినిమాలో చెప్పుకోవడానికేమీ పెద్దగా లేదు. ఇలాంటి సినిమాలకి నేపథ్య సంగీతం చాలా కీలకం. కథనం ఎలా ఉన్నా బ్యాక్ గ్రౌండ్ స్కోర్ బాగుంటే గట్టెక్కేసినవి చాలా ఉన్నాయి. కానీ ఇక్కడ ఆ అదృష్టం కూడా కలగలేదు. 

సినిమాలో ఒక్కక్కొడూ చచ్చిపోతుంటే హీరోతో సహా అందరూ పోతే బాగుండు...త్వరగా ఇంటికెళ్లిపోవచ్చు అనే ఫీలింగొస్తుంది ప్రేక్షకులకి. 

దర్శకుడికి క్యారెక్టైరైజేషన్స్ మీద పట్టు లేదని చెప్పడానికి క్లైమాక్సులో ఫైట్ సీనొకటుంది. హీరో ఒక్కొక్క గ్యాంగ్ మేన్ ని చంపుతుంటే మిగిలినవాళ్లు తన అన్నయ్యో, కొడుకో పోయినట్టు ఎమోషనలైపోతుంతారు. అప్పటి వరకు కర్కశంగా కనిపించినవాళ్లు సడెన్ గా ఇలా ఎందుకు ప్రవర్తిస్తారో అర్ధమవ్వదు. 

ఇక చివరాఖర్న గ్యాంగంతా చచ్చిపోయారు..హమ్మయ్య..అనుకునే లోపు విలన్ మరొక స్పెషల్ గాంగ్ ని దింపుతాడు. వాళ్లందర్నీ చంపడానికి హీరోగారు తగిన సమయం తీసుకుంటూంటే కుర్చీల్లోంచి అప్పటికే లేచిన జనం తెగిన గాలిపటాల్లా మళ్లీ కుర్చీల్లో కూలబడ్డారు. 

ఫైటంతా అయ్యాక హీరో విలన్ కి గన్ను పెట్టి తాను చంపనని, ఆ అవకాశాన్ని ఇంకొకడికి ఇస్తున్నాని చెప్పి ఒకడిని ప్రవేశపెడతాడు. వాడెవడో మనకి అర్ధం కావడానికి కొన్ని ఫ్లాష్ బ్యాక్ సీన్లొస్తాయి. పోనీ అదేమైనా ఆ సీనుకి న్యాయం చేసే పాత్రా అంటే అదీ కాదు.

ఆ టైములో "నేను వాడి చేతుల్లో చావను..నీ చేతుల్లోనే చస్తాను.." అంటూ విలన్ హీరోని వేడుకుంటాడు. మొత్తానికి విలన్ తన కోరిక తీరకుండానే చస్తాడు. 

ఈ సుదీర్ఘ క్లైమాక్స్ టార్చర్ ని తట్టుకుని కొన ఊపిరితో ఉన్న ప్రేక్షకులకి సీను సిమ్లాకి చేరుతుంది. 

అక్కడ హీరోకి ఒక ఫోన్ కాలొస్తుంది. 

"దమ్ముంటే రారా చూసుకుందాం" అంటాడు అవతల వ్యక్తితో మన హీరో! అదే సినిమాలో చివరి వాక్యం. 

అదే ఈ సినిమా ప్రేక్షకుడికి విసిరే చాలెంజ్ కూడా అనుకోవాలి! ఇంత చెప్పాకా కూడా దమ్ముంటే వెళ్లండి.

కింగ్ ఆఫ్ కొత్త చిత్రంలో కన్నా భాయ్ (షబీర్ కల్లరక్కల్) కొత్త ను ఏలుతూ ఉంటాడు. యువత డ్రగ్స్ కి బానిస అయ్యి ఊరు లో అంతా కన్నా భాయ్ రాజ్యం ఎలుతుంది. అయితే డ్రగ్స్ ను ఊర్లో అంతం చేయడానికి కొత్తగా సిఐ (ప్రసన్న) ఊరిలోకి వస్తాడు. కన్నా భాయ్ ను ఎదుర్కోవడం అంతా సులభం కాదు అని గ్రహిస్తాడు. ఇంతలో ఐశ్వర్య లక్ష్మీ డ్రగ్స్ ను అంతం చేయడానికి పలు రకలుగా ప్రయత్నిస్తూ, వివరాలు అన్నీ కూడా సిఐ (ప్రసన్న) కి తెలియజేస్తుంది.

ఈ ఊరిలోకి రాజు (దుల్కర్ సల్మాన్) రావడం ముఖ్యం అని ప్రసన్న అర్దం చేసుకుంటాడు. అనైఖా సురేంద్రన్ డేంజర్ లో ఉంది అంటూ రాజు కి విషయం తెలుస్తుంది. రాజు, కన్నాభాయ్ లకు జరిగిన గొడవ ఏమిటి? స్నేహితులు గా ఉన్న వీరు ఎందుకు విడిపోయారు? అనైఖా సురేంద్రన్ ప్రమాదం లో ఉంది అంటే, హీరో ఎందుకు తిరిగి వస్తాడు? ఆ ఊరిలో గంజాయి, డ్రగ్స్ ను పూర్తి స్థాయిలో హీరో రాజు నిర్ములించాడా? ఐశ్వర్య లక్ష్మీ తో రాజు ప్రేమ సఫలం అయ్యిందా? లాంటి ప్రశ్నలకు సమాధానాలు సినిమాలో ఉన్నాయి.

ప్లస్ పాయింట్స్:

ఈ సినిమాలో హీరో దుల్కర్ సల్మాన్ నటన బాగుంది. రాజు గా ఆకట్టుకొనే నటనను కనబరిచారు. ప్రధాన నటీనటుల పర్ఫార్మెన్స్ బాగుంది. ఫ్రెండ్ షిప్, ప్రేమ కి సంబందించిన సన్నివేశాలు సినిమాలు ఆకట్టుకున్నాయి.

సినిమాలో బ్యాక్ గ్రౌండ్ మ్యూజిక్ సన్నివేశాల్ని హైలైట్ చేయడం జరిగింది. అక్కడక్కడా వచ్చే డైలాగులు, ఎమోషనల్ సీన్స్ ఆకట్టుకుంటాయి. హీరో దుల్కర్ సల్మాన్ ఫుట్ బాల్ ప్లేయర్ గా చాలా బాగా నటించారు. ఫ్లాష్ బ్యాక్ సన్నివేశాల్లో చిత్రీకరణ ఆకట్టుకుంటుంది.

సినిమాలో అనుకోకుండా వచ్చే కొన్ని ట్విస్టు లు ఆకట్టుకుంటాయి. హీరో హీరోయిన్ ల మధ్యన సీన్స్ బాగున్నాయి. నెగటివ్ రోల్ లో చేసిన షబీర్ కల్లరక్కల్ పర్ఫార్మెన్స్ ఆకట్టుకుంటుంది. సినిమాలో ఫైట్ సన్నివేశాలు ఆడియెన్స్ ను అలరిస్తాయి. సినిమాటోగ్రఫీ బాగుంది.

మైనస్ పాయింట్స్:

రన్ టైమ్ సినిమాకి అతి పెద్ద మైనస్ పాయింట్. సినిమా చాలా సాగతీత గా ఉంది. అవసరం లేని సన్నివేశాలు సినిమాలో చాలా ఎక్కువగా ఉన్నాయి. చాలా వరకు సినిమాలో సన్నివేశాలు సైడ్ ట్రాక్ ను కలిగి ఉన్నాయి.

సినిమాలో ఫైట్స్ ఎక్కువగా ఉన్నాయి. కథ ఏదైనా కొత్తగా మలుపు తిరిగింది అని అనుకొనే లోపే, అదే రోటీన్ సీన్స్ తో బోరింగ్ గా అనిపిస్తుంది.

సినిమాలో చాలా సన్నివేశాలు, కథ ఎక్కడో ఒక దగ్గర చూసిన సన్నివేశాలు గా కనిపిస్తాయి. సినిమా అంత ఎంగేజింగ్ గా సాగదు. ఇలాంటి గ్యాంగ్ స్టర్ చిత్రాలకి గ్రిప్పింగ్ స్క్రీన్ ప్లే ఉండాలి.

సినిమాలో హీరోను చాలా బాగా చూపించినా, కథ మాత్రం అంత ఆసక్తికరం గా సాగదు. రివెంజ్ సన్నివేశాలు ఆడియెన్స్ ను కాస్త అలరించినా, చాలా వరకు నాటకీయంగా అనిపిస్తాయి.

సాంకేతిక విభాగం:

డైరెక్టర్ అభిలాష్ జోషీ చెప్పాలనుకున్న స్టోరీ ఓకే అనిపిస్తుంది. కానీ, దానిని ప్రెజెంట్ చేసిన విధానం అంత బాగోలేదు. హీరోను ఎలివేట్ చేసిన సన్నివేశాల్లో బ్యాక్ గ్రౌండ్ మ్యూజిక్ బాగుంది. సినిమాటోగ్రఫీ బాగుంది.

సినిమాలో నటించిన నటీనటుల నటన బాగానే ఉంది. ఎడిటింగ్ టీమ్ కొంచెం వర్క్ చేసి ఉండి ఉంటే బాగుండేది. సినిమాను రిచ్ గా చూపించడం లో నిర్మాణ విలువలు బాగున్నాయి.

మొత్తం మీద, కింగ్ ఆఫ్ కొత్త లాంగ్ రన్ టైమ్ ను కలిగి ఉన్న బోరింగ్ గ్యాంగ్‌స్టర్ డ్రామా. దుల్కర్ సల్మాన్ ఎప్పటిలాగే తన నటనతో ఆకట్టుకున్నాడు. కన్నాభాయ్ పాత్రలో నటించిన షబీర్ కల్లరక్కల్ నుండి మంచి సపోర్ట్ ను పొందాడు. కానీ రొటీన్ కథ, సాగతీత కారణం గా సినిమా చాలా బోరింగ్ గా సాగింది. ఈ వారాంతంలో కింగ్ ఆఫ్ కొత్త ఆడియెన్స్ ను నిరాశపరిచింది అని చెప్పాలి.

మలయాళ సూపర్ స్టార్ మమ్ముట్టి తనయుడిగా చిత్రపరిశ్రమలోకి ఎంట్రీ ఇచ్చిన దుల్కర్‌ సల్మాన్‌.. తనదైన నటనతో తక్కువ సమయంలోనే స్టార్‌ హీరోగా ఎదిగాడు. మలయాళ హీరో అయినప్పటికీ మహానటి, సీతారామం చిత్రాలతో తెలుగు ప్రేక్షకులకు కూడా దగ్గరయ్యాడు. తాజాగా దుల్కర్‌ నటించిన చిత్రం ‘కింగ్‌ ఆఫ్‌ కొత్త’. గ్యాంగ్‌స్టర్‌ నేపథ్యంలో తెరకెక్కిన ఈ చిత్రం నేడు(ఆగస్ట్‌ 24)ప్రేక్షకుల ముందుకు వచ్చింది. ఈ చిత్రం ఎలా ఉందో రివ్యూలో చూద్దాం. 

‘కింగ్‌ ఆఫ్‌ కొత్త’కథేంటంటే.. ఈ మూవీ కథ 80,90వ దశకంలో సాగుతుంది. కోతా అనే టౌన్‌కి చెందిన రాజు(దుల్కర్‌ సల్మాన్‌) తండ్రి రవిలాగే తాను కూడా ఓ పెద్ద రౌడీ కావాలని చిన్నప్పటి నుంచి కలలు కంటాడు. అనుకున్నట్లే పెద్ద రౌడీ అయి కోతా టౌన్‌ని తన గుప్పింట్లోకి తెచ్చుకుంటాడు. అతనికి చెల్లి రీతూ(అనికా సురేంద్రన్‌)అంటే చాలా ఇష్టం. కొడుకు రౌడీ కావడంతో తల్లి అతనితో మాట్లాడేది కాదు. దీంతో కోతా టౌన్‌లోనే స్నేహితుడు కన్నా(షబీర్‌ కళ్లరక్కల్‌)తో కలిసి వేరుగా ఉండేవాడు. స్వతాహా ఫుట్‌ బాల్‌ ప్లేయర్‌ అయిన రాజు.. ఆ ఏరియాలో ఎక్కడ పోటీలు నిర్వహించిన తన గ్యాంగ్‌తో కలిసి పాల్గొనేవాడు. రాజుకి అదే ప్రాంతానికి చెందిన తార(ఐశ్వర్య లక్షీ) అంటే చాలా ఇష్టం. ఆమె కోసమే కోతాలో డ్రగ్స్‌ అనేది లేకుండా చేస్తాడు.

ఓ కారణంగా రాజుకు తాగుడు బానిసైతాడు. దీంతో అతని గ్యాంగ్‌ అంతా వేరు వేరు ప్రాంతాలకు వెళ్లిపోతారు. కొన్నాళ్లకు కోతా ప్రాంతాన్ని తన చేతుల్లోకి తెచ్చుకున్న కన్నా.. కన్నాభాయ్‌గా మారి ఆ ప్రాంతంలో డ్రగ్స్‌ని విచ్చలవిడిగా అమ్మేస్తుంటాడు. ఆ ఏరియా పోలీసు అధికారులు సైతం కన్నాభాయ్‌కి భయపడతారు. అయితే ఎంతో మంది గ్యాంగ్‌స్టర్స్‌ని మట్టుపెట్టిన సీఐ శావుల్‌(ప్రసన్న) కోతాకి ట్రాన్స్‌ఫర్‌ అవుతాడు. కన్నాభాయ్‌కి చెక్‌ పెట్టేందుకై రాజుని మళ్లీ కోతా వచ్చేలా చేస్తాడు? ఆ తర్వాత ఏం జరిగింది? అసలు రాజు ఎందుకు కోతాని వదిలి వెళ్లాడు? ప్రాణ స్నేహితులుగా ఉన్న కన్నా, రాజులు ఎందుకు శత్రువులుగా మారారు? పదేళ్ల పాటు రాజు ఎక్కడికి వెళ్లాడు? అక్కడ ఏం చేశాడు? కన్నాభాయ్‌ ఆగడాలకు రాజు ఎలా చెక్‌ పెట్టాడు? ప్రాణంగా ప్రేమించిన తారకు రాజు ఎందుకు దూరమయ్యాడు? చివరకు కోతా ఎవరి ఆధీనంలోకి వెళ్లింది? అనేది తెలియాలంటే ‘కింగ్‌ ఆఫ్‌ కోతా’చూడాల్సిందే. 

ఎలా ఉందంటే.. గ్యాంగ్‌స్టర్స్‌ నేపథ్యంలో ఇప్పటికే చాలా సినిమాలు వచ్చాయి. అయితే వాటిలో చాలా వరకు విజయం సాధించాయి. దానికి కారణం కథ, కథనం కొత్తగా ఉండడం. ‘కింగ్‌ ఆఫ్‌ కొత్త’లో అసలు కొత్తదనం అనేదే లేదు. అవే కత్తి పోట్లు.. తుపాకుల తూట్లు.. వెన్నుపోట్లు.  కథ పరంగా ఎక్కడా కొత్తగా అనిపించదు కానీ కథనం మాత్రం కాస్త వెరైటీగా నడిపించే ప్రయత్నం చేశాడు దర్శకుడు. అయితే ఆ విషయంలో పూర్తిగా సక్సెస్‌ కాలేదు. ఈ చిత్రంలో మదర్‌ సెంటిమెంట్‌, సిస్టర్‌ సెంటిమెంట్‌తో పాటు ప్రేమ, స్నేహ బంధం..ఇలా అన్ని అంశాలు ఉన్నాయి . కానీ వాటిని ఆడియన్స్‌కి కనెక్ట్‌ అయ్యేలా చూపించడంలో డైరెక్టర్‌ విఫలం అయ్యాడు.

ఈ మూవీ కథ కోత అనే పట్టణంలో జరుగుతుంది. (కొత్త అంటే మలయాళంలో టౌన్‌ అని అర్థం. అదొక ఫిక్షనల్‌ టౌన్‌. అయితే తెలుగులో కొత్త అనే పదానికి కొత్తది అనే అర్థం వస్తుంది. అందుకే డబ్బింగ్‌లో కోతా అని వాడారు ) ప్రారంభమవుతుంది. కోతా పట్టణానికి కొత్తగా వచ్చిన సీఐ శావుల్‌కి అక్కడి ఎస్సై టోని.. రాజు, కన్నాల ఫ్లాష్‌బ్యాక్‌ చెప్పడం ప్రారంభించినప్పటి నుంచి కథపై ఆసక్తి పెరుగుతుంది. ఫుట్‌బాల్‌ పోటీకి సంబంధించిన సన్నివేశం ఆకట్టుకుంటుంది. ఇక తారతో రాజు ప్రేమాయణానికి సంబంధించినసన్నివేశాలు రొటీన్‌గా సాగుతుంది. రంజియ్‌ భాయ్‌ పాత్ర మాట్లేడే ఇంగ్లీష్‌ నవ్వులు పూయిస్తుంది. ఓవరాల్‌గా ఫస్టాఫ్‌లో కథ ఏమీ ఉండదు.. అలా సాగిపోతుంది అంతే.

ఇక ఇంటర్వెల్‌ సీన్‌ తర్వాత సెకండాఫ్‌ ఎలా ఉండబోతుందనేది ఈజీగా అర్థమవుతుంది. రాజు తిరిగి కోతాకి రావడం.. కన్నాభాయ్‌ మనుషులపై దాడి చేయడం..ఇలా రొటీన్‌గా కథ సాగుతుంది. ఇక క్లైమాక్స్‌కి అరగంట ముందు వరుసగా ట్విస్టులు ఉంటాయి. కాని అవి బోరింగ్‌ అనిపిస్తాయి. ఇక సినిమా ముగుస్తుందిలే అని అనుకున్న ప్రతిసారి మరో మలుపు రావడం.. సాగదీతగా అనిపిస్తుంది. ఇక దర్శకుడిని మెచ్చుకోవాల్సిన అంశం ఏంటంటే.. పాత్రలకు తగ్గట్టుగా నటీనటులను ఎంచుకోవడం.  ఎవరెలా చేశారంటే.. దుల్కర్‌ సల్మాన్‌ గ్యాంగ్‌స్టర్‌గా చేయడం ఇదే తొలిసారి. అయినప్పటికీ తనదైన నటనతో గ్యాంగ్‌స్టర్‌ రాజు పాత్రకి న్యాయం చేశాడు. యాక్షన్స్‌ సీన్స్‌లో అదరగొట్టేశాడు. ఇక దుల్కర్‌ తర్వాత ఈ చిత్రంలో బాగా పండిన పాత్ర షబిర్‌ది. కన్నా అలియాస్‌ కన్నాభాయ్‌ పాత్రలో ఒదిగిపోయాడు. రెండు డిఫరెంట్‌ వేరియషన్స్‌ ఉన్న పాత్ర తనది. ఇక గ్యాంగ్‌స్టర్‌ రాజు ప్రియురాలు తారాగా ఐశ్వర్య లక్ష్మీ తన పాత్ర పరిధిమేర చక్కగా నటించింది. హీరో సోదరి రీతూగా అనిఖా సురేంద్రన్ తన పాత్రకు న్యాం చేసింది. సీఐ శావుల్‌గా ప్రసన్న, ఎసై టోనీగా గోకుల్‌ సురేశ్‌తో పాటు మిగిలిన నటీనటులు తమ పాత్రల పరిధిమేర నటించారు. 

ఇక సాంకేతిక విషయాలకొస్తే.. ఈ సినిమాకు ప్రధాన బలం  జేక్స్ బిజోయ్. తనదైన నేపథ్య సంగీతంతో సినిమా స్థాయిని పెంచేశాడు. బీజీఎం కారణంగా కొన్ని సన్నివేశాలు ఆసక్తికరంగా అనిపించాయి. నిమేష్‌ రవి సినిమాటోగ్రఫీ కూడా అద్భుతంగా ఉంది. ఎడిటర్‌ తన కత్తెరకు ఇంకాస్త పని చెప్పాల్సింది. ముఖ్యంగా సెకండాఫ్‌లో చాలా సన్నివేశాలు మరింత క్రిస్పీగా కట్‌ చేయాల్సింది. నిర్మాణ విలువలు సినిమా స్థాయికి తగ్గట్లు ఉన్నతంగా ఉన్నాయి.  -అంజి శెట్టె, సాక్షి వెబ్‌డెస్క్‌

కథ (King Of Kotha Story) : రాజు (దుల్కర్ సల్మాన్) 'కొత్త' పట్టణంలో రౌడీ. అతనికి ఎదురే లేదు. తండ్రిని చూసి రౌడీగా మారాడతాడు రాజు. అతడిని చూసి మోజు పడని అమ్మాయి ఉండదు. అయితే... తారా (ఐశ్వర్య లక్ష్మి) ప్రేమలో పడిన తర్వాత మరో అమ్మాయి ముఖం చూడడు. సొంతూరిలో రాజులా ఉన్న రాజు, ఊరు విడిచి లక్నో ఎందుకు వెళ్ళాడు? తన ప్రాణానికి ప్రాణమైన చెల్లెలు రీతూ (అనిఖా సురేంద్రన్), స్నేహితుడు కన్నా (షబీర్ కాళ్లరక్కల్)ను వదిలి ఎలా ఉండగలిగాడు? 'కొత్త'కు తిరిగి వచ్చిన తర్వాత కన్నా, రాజు మధ్య యుద్ధం మొదలు కావడానికి కారణం ఏమిటి? చివరకు ఏమైంది? అనేది సినిమా. 

విశ్లేషణ (King Of Kotha Review) : ఓ మహిళ కోసం రాజులు, రాజ్యాల మధ్య యుద్ధాలు జరిగాయని చరిత్రలో చదివాం! 'కింగ్ ఆఫ్ కొత్త'లో అంతకు మించిన కొత్త కథ ఏమీ లేదు. కథలోని ప్రతి మలుపులో ఓ మహిళ కీలక పాత్రధారిగా ఉంటుంది. కథలో చాలా లేయర్స్ ఉన్నాయి. హీరోతో చాలా పాత్రలకు స్నేహ బంధం లేదంటే బంధుత్వం ఉంటుంది. యాక్షన్ మీద కాన్సంట్రేషన్ ఎక్కువ పెట్టడంతో అవన్నీ మురుగున పడ్డాయి. ఎమోషన్స్ పూర్తిస్థాయిలో ఎలివేట్ కాలేదు. కథ, కథనాల్లో ఎంత వెతికినా కొత్తదనం కనిపించదు. 

'కింగ్ ఆఫ్ కొత్త'ను పై నుంచి చూస్తే గ్యాంగ్‌స్టర్ డ్రామా. లోతుగా చూస్తే... అందులో తల్లి ప్రేమ, సిస్టర్ సెంటిమెంట్, మనసుకు ప్రేయసి చేసిన గాయం, స్నేహితుడు పొడిచిన వెన్నుపోటు వంటివి భావోద్వేగాలు ఉన్నాయి. కమర్షియల్ ఫార్మటులో కథను చెప్పాలని, ప్రతి సన్నివేశాన్ని కళాత్మకంగా తీర్చిదిద్దాలని దర్శకుడు చేసిన ప్రయత్నం బెడిసికొట్టింది. దాంతో సినిమా చాలా అంటే చాలా నిదానంగా సాగుతుంది. ఒక విధంగా చూస్తే... ఫస్టాఫ్ అలా అలా సాగింది! పాత్రలను పరిచయం చేస్తూ వెళ్లడంతో కాస్త ఆసక్తిగా ఉంటుంది. విశ్రాంతి తర్వాత కాసేపటికి ముగింపు ఏమిటనేది చాలా స్పష్టంగా అర్థం అవుతుంది. కథ ముగుస్తుందని భావించిన ప్రతిసారీ దర్శక, రచయితలు సాగదీశారు. అక్కడ కొన్ని ట్విస్టులు పడ్డాయి. కానీ, అప్పటి వరకు సాగదీసి సాగదీసి కథను చెప్పడంతో త్వరగా ముగిస్తే ఇంటికి వెళ్ళవచ్చనే ఫీలింగ్ ప్రేక్షకుల్లో కలుగుతుంది. 

'కింగ్ ఆఫ్ కొత్త'లో అసలైన హీరోలు అంటే నేపథ్య సంగీతం అందించిన జేక్స్ బిజోయ్, సినిమాటోగ్రాఫర్ నిమిష్ రవి. కథా నేపథ్యంలో 1980, 90లలో జరుగుతుంది. ఆ కాలం తెరపై కనిపించేలా ప్రొడక్షన్ డిజైనర్లు, సినిమాటోగ్రాఫర్ జాగ్రత్తలు తీసుకున్నారు. యాక్షన్ సన్నివేశాల్లో జేక్స్ బిజోయ్ అందించిన నేపథ్య సంగీతం హీరోయిజాన్ని ఎలివేట్ చేసింది. నిర్మాణ విలువలు ఉన్నత స్థాయిలో ఉన్నాయి. యాక్షన్ సీన్స్ డిజైనింగ్ కూడా బావుంది.   

నటీనటులు ఎలా చేశారంటే... : దుల్కర్ సల్మాన్ ఎటువంటి పాత్ర అయినా చేయగలరని 'కింగ్ ఆఫ్ కొత్త' మరోసారి నిరూపిస్తుంది. యాక్షన్ సన్నివేశాల్లోనూ చక్కటి నటన కనబరిచారు. కథలో కీలకమైన కన్నా పాత్రలో షబీర్ లుక్స్ పరంగా వేరియేషన్ చూపించడమే కాదు... నటుడిగానూ మెరిశారు. ఐశ్వర్య లక్ష్మి, అనిఖా సురేంద్రన్, పోలీస్ అధికారిగా ప్రసన్న తదితరులు పాత్రల పరిధి మేరకు చేశారు. రంజిత్ పాత్రలో చెంబన్ వినోద్ దాస్ మధ్యలో కొన్ని నవ్వులు పూయించారు. రితికా సింగ్‌ ప్రత్యేక గీతంలో మెరిశారు.

Dulquer Salmaan became dearer to Telugu audiences with Mahanati & Sita Ramam. He is now back with a rugged-mass avatar in the gangster film ‘King of Kotha’. The trailer has raised the expectations on the film. Will Dulquer continue his success streak and will he cement his position? Let’s check out our verdict.

Kanna Bhai is a dreaded don who is ruling Kotha. Newly-transferred police inspector Shaul Hassan (Prasanna) challenges him to put an end to Kanna’s rule. But he is defeated. He decided to bring estranged criminal Raju (Dulquer) to Kotha to put a check to Kanna. What is the past between Raju and Kanna? How Raju settles all the scores from the crux of the story.

Performances :

Dulquer Salmaan gives up his class look and turns into a rugged avatar. He dons the role of a rowdy, albeit a good rowdy. This shade of Dulquer fails to work. Acting-wise there are no complaints though. Shabeer as the baddie does what is expected of him. Inconsistency in his characterisation makes him a weak villain. Aishwarya Lekshmi as Tara is alright. She got a cliched role of a heroine without much screen-presence. Anikha Surendran as Duqluer’s sister gets an unimportant role. Chemban Vinod gets the role of Ranjith, another villain. His fascination for English is good thought, but could have been executed well. The dialogues of his broken English failed to engage. Nyla Usha as Manju is seductive and her back story at the end is somewhat interesting. Shanthi Krishna as mother Malathi is fine. Her role has a twist towards the end. Gokul Suresh is seen as SI Tony. Dhruv Vikram is seen in a brief role as a guest appearance. The film has stellar performances which are backed by good characters. But weak writing plays the spoilsport.

Technicalities

The story of the King of Kotha is quite familiar. But the idea on paper sounds great. But it loses to the bad treatment. The film drags and drags. Weak screenplay takes away the steam. Direction suffers to an extent. Technically, the film is flawless. Production design and sound design deserve special mention. Background music is good. The film struggles with its pace.

Weak Story & Screenplay Lacks Powerful Villain Dragged Portions

Dulquer and director Abhilash Joshiy team-up for a gangster film. The film’s scale, look, template all give a huge elevation. The expectations before its release were high. After watching the trailer, what one expect is a kickass action crime drama, but what is finally offered is a mediocre gangster film with no surprises. The film begins with Kotha intro and how it eventually ruled by one don Kanna Bhai. He is portrayed as a notorious and dangerous villain. But his original characterisation is revealed when the story progresses. With the backstory, it is revealed he is actually a weak and feeble who rose to the position without much effort. All these make the villain less impactful. The writers have to be blamed. Even Dulquer’s elevation is not effective. It is all in words. He is called as Raj Madarassi in UP. He has introduced new-style of killing people. All these really need better translation onto the screen. And he is seen saying he bought ‘Apple Farms’ to turn the farmer and leave the violence. There is a disconnect and this wasn’t narrated well. There is a satire in the film from Dulquer where he mouths, “Everyone is going to Mumbai. So I went to Uttar Pradesh.”

Director Abhilash seems to be inspired from KGF, but this Kotha is nowhere close. The villains here in Kotha are mere jokers. The gangster action movie falters in terms of the story. Lack of a gripping screenplay adds to the woes. Dulquer and direction rescue the film to an extent. But the dragged portions bore the viewers. The film tests patience. Of all, the film is highly predictable and has several nostalgic moments squandered all over it. The love track between the lead pair is also unconvincing. The film towards the interval raises some hope. Dulquer aka Raju leaves the town of Kotha due to love failure and deceit in friendship. But the second-half doesn’t improve at all. It just moves in a sluggish way with highly predictable scenes.

Having said this, King of Kotha isn’t completely bad. It has its moments occasionally. There are several crafts in the film that have delivered. The production design, background score and the artistes performances are the biggest strengths that make one sit through the whole film. However, the formulaic scenes and lack of enough action, unworkable emotion make this a tiring watch. The film just drags and drags and make audiences wait for the climax sequence. This Kotha is ‘Rotha’. This gangster drama is damp squib.

What’s it about?

Set in 1996 in Kotha, a town infamous for its ganja (cannabis) addicts, there is a don named Kanna Bhai (Shabeer Kallarakkal). Even the cops are afraid of meeting him. A new police officer (Prasanna) promises to clean up Kotha and starts digging the background and rise of Kanna Bhai.

Raju (Dulquer Salmaan) was the gang leader of this location in 1986, and Kanna was his close friend and associate. Tara (Aishwarya Lekshmi), the lady he loved, betrayed him, he felt. On the other side, his pal Kanna, in collaboration with another gang leader Ranjith, defrauds Raju. Raju becomes infuriated and hits Kanna severely, damaging his eye. Raju decides to relocate from Kotha to Luckow as a result of this the incident. Kanna Bhai takes over as don in Raju’s absence.

And ten years later, Raju comes to town. Will things be the same in Kotha when he returns?

Since the advent of blockbusters like pan-Indian movies like “KGF,” it has become fashionable for filmmakers to narrate period stories set in a place where anarchy ruled and one individual (presumably the film’s lead hero) becoming the savior of the place. The film “King of Kotha” is similar. To obtain the action hero image, however, the highly talented Dulquer Salmaan, who recently impressed Telugu viewers in “Sita Ramam,” picked the wrong storyline.

Aside from being an exercise to cement Dulquer’s status as an action hero, the “story” (if it can even be called that) in “King of Kotha” is weak and muddled. The film’s subplots are poorly explained. The very thread between hero and his friend turned foe is pointless.

Raju’s parents never speak to him. Even when he returns to their house ten years later, his father maintains same stubborn face, but in the following scene, the son and father become emotional. Aishwarya Lekshmi is introduced as a woman who is battling for a drug-free town. She is portrayed as Raju’s girlfriend. However, it is revealed after a few scenes that she is in love with her university friend. In the second half, he meets her again and invites her to his sister’s birthday celebration, as if all of their prior episodes had vanished in an instant. The entire Dulquer Salmaan and Aishwarya Lekshmi thread is ridiculous. So is the fundamental rivalry between Dulquer’s Raju and Shabber’s Kanna Bhai.

The entire first half is a big bore. Thankfully, some drama in the second half holds our attention.

Except for Dulquer Salmaan’s presence and his genuine portrayal of Raju, this film is a yawn. The work of the production designer is among the best in the technical categories. Jakes Bejoy’s background score works well. The writing is bad. The direction of new filmmaker Abhilash Joshiy is poor.

Bottom line: “King of Kotha” is a predictable action drama with nothing new to offer. It puts our patience to the test and is a yawn-inducing drama.

The success of "Sita Ramam" has catapulted Dulquer Salmaan to prominence in Telugu. His fame spans all of India. “King of Kotha” is his latest pan-Indian film. He also produced it.

Let’s find out its merits and demerits.

Story: The story is set in 1996. Kanna bhai (Shabbeer) is the don of the drug-ridden town of Kotha. Shahul (Prasanna), a new police officer, tactfully organizes the return of the "King.” The 'King' is ex-gang leader Raju. Ten years ago, Kanna Bhai worked as Raju's assistant.

How Kanna deceives Raju and turns into a don is revealed in the rest of the drama. Details about what happened to make Raju leave town and his plans for exacting retribution are revealed. His relationship with Tara (Aishwarya Lekshmi) and the ups and downs it experiences are also detailed.

Artistes’ Performances: One of India's most dashing actors, Dulquer Salmaan also manages to impress with his performances. His performance is sincere and effective despite the thinness of his role. He brings life and energy to an otherwise boring film.

Aishwarya Lekshmi plays an unremarkable character. Sabbeer in the role of Kanna Bhai is a mismatch. While Anikha Surendran, who plays Dulquer Salmaan’s sister, only has a few scenes, Nyla Usha, who plays Khanna Bhai's girlfriend, is impressive. The guy who plays Ranjith gets some funny English lines.

Technical Excellence: The songs composed by Jakes Bejoy and Shaan Rahman are forgettable. The background score composed by Jakes Bejoy is also a let down.

In the same vein, the production design is worth mentioning. The writing and editing are both quite subpar.

Analysis Even a bullock cart moves faster than the narration of "King of Kotha." With a runtime of 170 minutes, this Dulquer Salmaan-starrer gangster drama suffers from a sluggish screenplay and lacks a convincing storyline.

Khanna Bhai, the don of Kotha, is introduced at the beginning of the story as a threatening and vicious figure who has the police force under his control. However, as the hero enters the scene, he transforms into a mere shadow. Initially, he was the hero's friend, but in his absence, he became a don. The reason behind the hero and his former friend being at odds is poorly explained.

The film contains numerous subplots, including the hero's conflict with his parents, Khanna Bhai's romance with Manju, and a cunning police officer, among others. Unfortunately, none of these subplots are adequately developed or reach a logical conclusion.

The first part of the film reminds one of "Dasara," a place filled with crime and narcotics (replacing alcohol addiction in "Dasara"), and the story of two friends. However, the entire first half is painfully slow. Although the pace of the plot does not significantly change after the intermission, things do improve somewhat in the second half compared to the first. Nonetheless, neither half provides a credible narrative.

The primary reason for Dulquer and Aishwarya Lekshmi's continued longing for each other after breaking up on a specific occasion is also unclear. A mother who prefers a cat over her own son or someone similar is equally unbelievable.

In addition to these dull portions, the film is excessively long.

It’s not that the film doesn’t have any positive elements. The film has a grand setting. The production design, the cinematography are ok but still it tests the patience. 

Overall, “King of Kotha '' suffers from poor writing, vague narration and sluggish pace. Despite Dulquers’s presence and grand production values, the film only offers boring moments. This is certainly an ignorable film and if dared to get into the theatres it squeezes out the energies of the majority audience for sure.

ఈ కథ అంతా కూడా 1980 లో నడుస్తుంది. రాజు (దుల్కర్ సల్మాన్) ఫుట్ బాల్ ప్లేయర్. అయితే ఇతను కొన్ని అనుకోని సంఘటనలని ఎదుర్కోవాల్సి వస్తుంది. అయితే రాజు వాటిని పరిష్కరించాలి అని ట్రై చేస్తుంటే ఆ ఊరికి ఏకంగా రాజు నాయకుడు అయిపోతాడు. అసలు ఎందుకు రాజు ఇలా మారిపోతాడు..? అందుకు కారణం ఏంటి..? అసలు తనకేం కష్టాలు వచ్చాయి..? ఎలా అందులో నుండి బయటకి వచ్చాడు..? ఇవి తెలియాలంటే మూవీ చూడాలి.

నిమిష్ రవి అందించిన సినిమాటోగ్రఫీ ఈ మూవీ కి ప్లస్ అయింది. 1980 లో జరిగే సంఘటనలు చూస్తున్నట్టు గానే మూవీ ఉంటుంది. సెట్ డిజైన్ అంతా పర్ఫెక్ట్. కొత్త అనే ఒక నగరాన్ని చాలా బాగా చూపించారు. యాక్షన్ సీన్స్ కూడా చాలా బాగున్నాయి. కొంచెం డిఫెరెంట్ గా ట్రై చేసారు. బానే ఉంది. కథ మొత్తం సెకండ్ హాఫ్ లో అదిరిపోతోంది.

కానీ సెకండ్ హాఫ్ మొత్తం కూడా ఒక స్లో పేస్ లో వెళ్తుంది. దుల్కర్ సల్మాన్ నటన అద్భుతం. పాత్ర కోసం తనని తాను మార్చుకున్నారు. నైలా ఉష పోషించిన పాత్ర కూడా బావుంది. ఐశ్వర్య లక్ష్మి కూడా ఆమె పాత్రకి బానే న్యాయం చేశారు. జేక్స్ బిజోయ్ అందించిన బ్యాక్ గ్రౌండ్ మ్యూజిక్ కూడా బావుంది.

Movie Review: King of Kotha Somewhere between King and minion

' King of Kotha ' is dubbed from Malayalam. Since Dulquer Salmaan 's stature has gone up in the eyes of the Telugu audience after last year's 'Sita Ramam', the openings are expected to be respectable in the Telugu States. How is the action drama film? Is it worth a watch? Let's find out...

Back in 1996, a town named Kotha came under the vice-like influence of drugs, thanks to Kannan (Shabeer Kallarakkal) and his gang. Before Kannan's ascension to the throne, Raju (Dulquer Salmaan) prevented substance abuse from taking root in Kotha. He opposed Ranjith (Chemban Vinod Jose) tooth and nail. Treachery by his friend Kannan resulted in Kotha falling prey to drugs.

Years later, motivated by the need to save his sister Ritu (Anika Surendran) from danger, Raju returns to the town with vengeance. Will he eliminate Kannan? Or, will he get eliminated?

Performances:

It takes time for the audience to accept Dulquer Salmaan in the role of a gangster who shows aggression and violent tendencies even in an unlikely place like a library. He is toxic but he can't tolerate some moral transgressions. He shines in the scenes with his girlfriend Tara (Aishwarya Lekshmi) more than with the antagonist.

But the staggering reliance on Dulquer takes a toll after a point. Nobody else makes an impression, be it Kannan, Raju's estranged father, Kannan's estranged and melodramatic mother, or the sister in danger. Some of the performances are watered down by illogical writing, especially in the second half.

Technical Departments:

In recent times, the background music has decided the fate of movies. In some cases, the BGM was the difference between a film becoming a blockbuster and just a hit. Think of 'Vikram' and 'Jailer'. Jakes Bejoy becomes that life-saving force in the case of 'King Of Kotha'. But director Abhilash Joshiy is no Lokesh Kanagaraj or Nelson. That's why the film under review can't aspire to become a box-office scorcher. Yet, purely from an artistic and technical standpoint, the film needs to be commended for letting Jakes Bejoy conjure up some magic here and there.

The cinematography by Nimish Ravi and the production design by Nimesh M Thanoor don't prevent the second half from feeling claustrophobic. The backdrops seem limited. The production values needed to be better. Shyam Sasidharan's editing is run-of-the-mill.

The resurrection element. The hero's return to Kotha and the build-up to it are good ideas.

The football element is another positive. Mollywood movies try to use sports/arts/literature pretty well even in mass movies.

No major Mollywood-ish hangover.

The second half is blighted by illogical moments where the antagonist behaves like a headless chicken.

The 'KGF' influence feels second-rate.

The romantic scenes don't work. Why can't Tara persuade Raju to leave the path of violence? You don't get an answer.

The action scenes and the grammar of violence are inspired by other movies. There is no originality.

Vox Verdict:

'King Of Kotha' is a lost opportunity. Its storyline had so much potential. In the second half, everything goes downhill.

King of kotha movie review - not a king by any reckoning.

'King of Kotha', originally produced by Dulquer Salmaan and Zee Studios, was released in theatres today (August 24). Here is our review of the action thriller dubbed from Malayalam into Telugu.

The story is set in a town named Kotha, a gangster-infested town. The time period is 1996.

Kannan bhai (Shabeer Kallarakkal) rules the roost there. CI Shahul Hassan (Prasanna as an IPS officer) tries to put him in his place but to no avail. This is when the brave cop learns about the bravest of all - Raju ( Dulquer Salmaan ), who once ruled the roost in Kotha.

Raju, incidentally, was Kannan's all-weather friend before they fell apart. After learning about the machinations that led to the enmity between Raju and Kannan, the cop decides to make Raju come back to Kotha to eliminate Kannan's gang. But it is not going to be easy, for Raju is not fond of becoming the King. The second half is about the complex arc involving Raju and Kannan.

Performances:

Dulquer sets aside the softness he was known for in 'Sita Ramam'. This time, he is up for an action star image. His screen presence is striking in some scenes.

A drawback is that this saga-like story is not powered by performances by others. Shabeer Kallarakkal is inconsistent in the full-fledged role that he gets to play. Prasanna's dubbing in the Telugu version is meh. Aishwarya Lekshmi is average as well; we don't feel for her misery. Chemban Vinod Jose (as Ranjith) is fun to watch as he struggles to speak in polished English.

Anikha Surendran (who was the female lead of the Telugu film 'Butta Bomma') is seen as the hero's sister. Her character is played up well in some instances.

Technical aspects:

Jakes Bejoy of 'Taxiwaala' and 'Oke Oka Jeevitham' delivers a superb score. His BGM, to an extent, is inspired by Anirudh Ravichander's style. Quite a few scenes brim with energy because of his work.

Nimish Ravi's cinematography is average, while editor Shyam Sasidharan leaves the overlong second half in the lurch. Production Designer Nimesh M Thanoor tries to recreate a bygone era.

Debutant director Abhilash Joshiy and writer Abhilash N Chandran tell a gangster story that is laced with betrayals, friendship, estrangements and romance. The storyline of the first half is decent, although the film struggles to acquire pace till around the 30th minute.

The interval block, the hero elevation moments, and the suspense factor keep the audience engaged. But the second half is where the film completely loses its track. The conversations between the various characters are bland. The tumultuous equations between Raju and Kannan should have been intriguing. Since Kannan's characterization is lifeless, the scenes fail to make the grade.

It would be unfair to say that the film relies too much on Dulquer's swag and charisma. There surely is an attempt to tell an emotional story. This is not a mindless action entertainer like, say, 'Bholaa Shankar'. However, through and through, logic has been thrown to the winds. There is just one thing that the antagonist needs to do. And since he is a powerful fellow lording over Kotha, he shouldn't have taken so long to figure out how to execute his plan. He fails. And every time he fails, he does an even more useless thing. And every time he does something useless, the story gets dragged further, letting Raju and the other primary characters keep on speaking.

The period gangster film is one of the most expensive products to come out of Mollywood. Yet, the film's scale doesn't appear cool in the more crucial second half.

Closing Remarks:

If Dulquer alone could save a film, 'King Of Kotha' would be a hit in the non-Kerala market. But that's not the case. This period gangster drama has too many flaws to mint money at the box office.

King of Kotha is a Malayalam language gangster action drama which is dubbed into Telugu and released with the same title. The film is written by Abhilash N. Chandran & directed by Abhilash Joshiy. It has Dulquer Salmaan & Aishwarya Lekshmi playing the lead roles while Prasanna, Shabeer Kallarakkal, Gokul Suresh, Nyla Usha, Anikha Surendran & others are seen in important supporting roles. The music is composed by Jakes Bejoy and the film is produced by Dulquer Salmaan & Zee Studios under the Wayfarer Films banner.

CI Shahul Haasan (Prasanna) takes charge in the crime-infested town of Kotha. Shahul decides to eradicate the drug mafia in the town. In this process, he is humiliated by a gangster named Khanna (Shabeer) and his men. Later Shahul learns from his colleague Tony about an exiled gangster named Raju (Dulquer Salmaan), who ruled Kotha a few years before. He also gets to know that both Raju & Khanna were best friends in the past who parted ways due to a few reasons. What are those reasons? What is Raju’s history? What did Shahul do then? This forms part of the crux of the story.

What about on-screen performances?

Dulquer Salmaan makes a late entry into the film but right from the time he comes, he steals the show with his terrific performance as Raju. He portrays 2 looks in the film and he nails both of them with his trademark swagger. He is especially good after he makes his entry in the second half and does well with all the action sequences in the latter half.

Shabeer Kallarakkal is excellent as Khanna. He gets a meaty role and he does full justice to it in both his shades.

Aishwarya Lakshmi’s role doesn’t offer much scope to show her acting talent but she is pretty decent in her limited portions.

Chemban Vinod entertains with his funny English diction lines.

Nyla Usha is a surprise in the film as she is extremely effortless in her role as Manju.

Prasanna plays a police officer and is good in it while Gokul Suresh is fine as SI Tony.

Anikha Surendran also shines in her short role as Raaju’s sister.

All the rest of the ensemble supporting cast are okay in their respective parts.

What about off-screen talents?

The story by Abhilash N. Chandran is very weak and is a routine gangster drama that offers nothing new. The screenplay too is utterly predictable and never excites us with at least one solid scene. Except for the slow-mo shots of Dulquer, there is no proper high in the film. The plot had the scope to be a proper gangster film, but the way the scenes are written & narrated is the biggest drawback of the film.

Debut director Abhilash Joishy does a middling job with the film. His presentation is top notch but his narrative is too boring. He should have taken much more care on the writing part and needed to keep the run time under check to at least make this film a watchable affair.

The cinematography by Nimish Ravi is brilliant. He lits all the scenes perfectly and his framing is on point.

The songs by Jakes Bejoy & Shaan Rahman are good. Kalapakkaara song and People of Kotha track are the best picks in the album.

Jakes Bejoy is kickass and is the biggest asset of the film. It is his trendy score that keeps the interest alive in the film.

The editing by Uma Sankar Satapathy is not up to the mark. Many prolonged sequences could have been trimmed down.

Special mention to the production designer Nimesh M Thanoor and the entire art team for the authentic sets in the film.

The production values by Zee Studios & Wayfarer Films are first-rate.
