History of Republic Day

While we got independence from British rule on August 15, 1947, our country was still lacking a concrete constitution. Moreover, India also did not have any experts and political powers which would help in the functioning of the state affairs smoothly.  Up until then, the 1935 Government of India Act was basically modified in order to govern, however, that act was more bent towards the colonial rule. Therefore, there was a dire need to form an exclusive constitution that would reflect all that India stands for.

Thus, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar led a constitutional drafting committee on August 28, 1947.  After drafting, it was presented to the Constituent Assembly by the same committee on November 4, 1947. This whole procedure was very elaborate and took up to 166 days to complete. Moreover, the committee organized sessions were kept open to the public.

No matter the challenges and hardships, our constitutional committee left no stone unturned to include rights for all. It aimed to create the perfect balance so all citizens of the country could enjoy equal rights pertaining to their religions, culture, caste, sex, creed and more. At last, they presented the official Indian constitution to the country on January 26, 1950.

Moreover, the first session of the India Parliament was also conducted on this day. In addition to that, 26 th January also witnessed the swearing-in of India’s first president, Dr. Rajendra Prasad. On 26th January 1950, India implemented the Constitution. Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was elected as the President of the Indian National Congress and Poorna Swaraj was declared on 26th January 1930. However, we got independence on 15 August 1947.

After independence, a special constituent assembly was appointed for making the Constitution of India. Dr B.R Ambedkar led the constitution drafting committee. While creating India’s constitution, other countries’ constitutions have also been referred to, so as to create the best constitution. After 166 days, the Constitution of India was finally made. It was created in such a manner that all citizens of India could enjoy equal rights pertaining to their religions, culture, caste, sex and creed. On 26th January 1950 , the Constitution of India was adopted and implemented, and the day is referred to as Republic Day. Moreover, it marks the end of British rule and the birth of India as a Republic State.

Republic Day is a Significant Moment in India's History

26 th January is celebrated as Republic Day in our country. On this day in 1950, the constitution of our country was formally adopted and India became a fully sovereign state. The fundamental law of the country, the Constitution, was enacted out of the diligence and hard work of great men like Mahatma Gandhi and the numerous freedom fighters who fought and sacrificed their lives for the independence of our country. So, the 26 th of January was declared a National holiday and has been recognized and celebrated as the Republic Day of India ever since.

After Independence, the country did not have any self-made official Constitution, instead, its laws were based on modified colonial acts. So, establishing an official constitution for our own country was the utmost task in front of the Government of India. Our constitution is the result of the hard work and struggle of the esteemed members of the Constituent Assembly under the Presidency of Dr. Rajendra Prasad. Dr. Ambedkar was the Father of our Constitution. After deeply studying the various constitutions of other countries, our founding fathers framed our Constitution and it is the lengthiest constitution in the world. It reflects upon the dedication and foresight of these great men. That is how the Constitution came into being. It took two years, eleven months, and eighteen days to complete the Constitution. Though it was enacted and adopted by the constituent assembly on 26 th November 1949, it came into force on 26 th January, 1950.

Significance of 26 th January

It is to be noted that January 26 had a great significance in India’s struggle for Swaraj. The Congress Session at Lahore on December 29, 1929, had passed a resolution declaring Purna Swaraj (Complete Independence) as India’s goal. It was also decided that the 26 th of January should be observed all over India as Purna Swaraj Day. The complete Independence Day was for the first time celebrated on January 26 th, 1930. It continued to be so observed until 1947. On achieving Independence, August 15 became our Independence Day.

January 26 th , however, marked a great event in India’s struggle for freedom. It was, therefore, in the favour of all that January 26 should be selected as the Date of Commencement of the new Constitution.

Therefore, this day is celebrated as a day of national significance with great joy and pride.

How is Republic Day celebrated in India?

Indians celebrate Republic Day with great jubilation and joy all over the country. The day honours India's constitution as an independent nation. Schools and colleges hoist the national flag on Republic Day. Cultural events celebrating India's struggle for independence are organised across the country. The President of India hoists the national flag at India Gate in New Delhi. In New Delhi, the most prestigious parade takes place on Rajpath. An Indian President conducts the parade, which is coordinated by the Ministry of Defence. The event not only displays India's military prowess but also promotes its diverse culture. In addition, the event pays tribute to those who have sacrificed their lives for the country. India's Prime Minister honours the martyrs by placing a ringlet at India Gate's Amar Jawan Jyoti. There is also a march-past that the armed forces, police, and National Cadet Corps take part in, during which the President of India is saluted by these regiments. When the fighter jets of the Indian Air Force fly past Janpath, the ceremony concludes. The Republic Day celebrations are held across the country, but Delhi is the centre of the largest celebration. Every year, millions of people have the opportunity to watch a live Webcast of the Republic Day Parade. 'Video on demand' is made available after the event as a way to view the exclusive footage. The flag is also unfurled in the state capitals, though on a smaller scale, where the Governor unfurls the flag. At district headquarters, subdivisions, talukas, and panchayats, the celebrations take place in a similar manner.

The official end to the Republic Day celebrations is Beating the Retreat, which takes place after all of the celebrations are over. From 26th to 29th, the government buildings are beautifully lit in glittering lights. On January 29, the third day after Republic Day, the beating retreat ceremony is held. During the Drummer's Call, drummers perform solo performances. The bands march back playing the popular martial tune, Saare Jahan Se Achcha. At exactly 6 p.m., the National Flag is lowered and the National Anthem is sung, marking the end of Republic Day celebrations.

Celebrating Republic Day in My School

My school celebrated the 66th Republic Day of India in a glorious manner. The spirit of patriotism echoed with National Anthem and hoisting of the National Flag was a proud moment for all of us.

Magnificent March Past with perfect action by senior students of my school brought a spark of patriotic passion on this important national day. However, the highlight of the programme was an act put up by the students of secondary section to emphasize the aim of our Prime Minister’s Swatch Bharat Abhiyan.

 The celebration of this national festival in our school was graced by the esteemed presence of notables from different fields. Mrs. Roxana, a retired school Principal and a well-known child psychiatrist was invited as the guest of honours to grace the function. We welcomed her in different languages. In her speech, she praised the students for their outstanding discipline and passion to celebrate the important occasion. She even pointed about our efforts in organizing the event.

Every year my school celebrates Republic Day with great pride to spread the feelings of love, unity, brotherhood, affection and goodwill among the students belonging to different religions. We remember and pay homage to the heroes who fought to achieve India’s freedom. However, with all respect, we sang patriotic songs that echoed the entire atmosphere of the school. Students skillfully presented pyramid and aerobics that captivated the audience. All admired our performance with great enthusiasm, encouragement and interest. Selected winners outshined in curricular and extra-curricular activities were also felicitated. Even I got a certificate for good conduct.

For this special day, my school had planned number of fascinating programmes that won the hearts of the guests and parents. Finally, the programme ended with a closing chorus of school anthem by the students and planting of sapling in respect of protecting the environment. As preparations for this day were done in advance everything went very smooth.

The chief guest in her speech congratulated the students and the audience for their wholehearted participation and enthusiasm shown. She further said that national festivals like Independence Day and Republic Day must be celebrated in grand style because it helps in keeping the patriotic spirit alive within us. She praised everyone for being responsible citizens of the nation and creating an environment where all would enjoy their rights with total freedom.

January 27; Sodepur High School: Sodepur High School yesterday celebrated Republic Day like all other years. This School is quite famous for its solemn celebration of National ceremonies like Independence Day, Republic Day etc.

They celebrate these ceremonies in a very eventful manner. This year was no exception as well. Students came to the school premises within 8:30 in the morning as per the instruction.

A beautiful procession mostly led by students of the school went out of the school at about 9 a.m. The procession came back within 45 minutes. Then a cultural function was opened with an inspiring speech of the honourable headmaster.

Following that some short drama depicting the parliamentary system of India was staged by the students of class 11 and 12. The program was full of Cultural events like singing, recitation, dance etc.

Amazing Republic Day Ceremony in Holy Child Girls’ High School

January 27; Holy Child Girls’ High School: The Holy Child Girls’ High School celebrated the Republic Day ceremony yesterday with great splendour. All students were instructed to be present at the school premises within 7:30 in the morning.

Then like all the years, the celebration was opened by the flag upliftment ceremony. This was followed by a drill march led by the girls of the school. This march is very famous among the city as it is a beautifully decorated procession and musical instruments like bagpipes, drums and flutes are played by the little students of the school.

The procession returned to the school premises after 30 minutes of march. A beautifully decorated stage was constructed in the school field for the cultural programme to take place. Like all other years, students, as well as teachers, participated in the function.

Even a collaborative drama of the students and the teachers was staged depicting the moment of birth of independent India. After the drama, the headmistress went on the stage and delivered a short speech explaining the tradition of the school in Republic Day celebration since independence. Thus the beautiful ceremony came to an end with the utmost completeness in the heart of everybody.

Republic Day Cultural Programme in Muralidhar Girls’ School 

January 27; Muralidhar Girls’ School: A beautiful cultural program took place yesterday in Muralidhar Girls’ School auditorium in order to celebrate the Republic Day this year. Unlike other years, this year the school authority decided to organise a cultural program on behalf of this day.

A notification was issued about a month ago in order to enlist the names of the participants in the program. Students started their rehearsal on a regular basis under the supervision of the class teachers.

On this particular day 26th January, all students were instructed to be present in the school premises within 9:00 in the morning. At around 9:45 the usual flag upliftment ceremony took place with the hand of the headmistress. Then a short speech was delivered by her in order to explain the significance of this particular day.

This was followed by the opening of the cultural program with the national anthem of our country. The function was quite eventful. Most of the students as well as teachers participated in the program.

Little students of class 5 and 6 were present at the entrance of the auditorium to welcome the guests with red roses. Thus, such an eventful day came to an end with a short drama staged by the students of class 9 and 10.

Vidyasagar College Celebrated Republic Day

January 27; Vidyasagar College: Vidyasagar College organised a different type of agenda in order to celebrate this year’s Republic Day ceremony. An agenda of spreading awareness about Indian democracy and its history was taken on behalf of the college this year.

To implement this humanitarian agenda the last week was declared as Republic awareness week from the college union. During the whole week, many beautiful informative posters were designed by the students and pasted all the walls around the college.

A unique initiative of painting graffiti was also taken on behalf of the students. These all forms of art depicted the great tradition and heritage of Indian democracy. According to the spokesperson of the college union, a complete awareness about the celebration of this Republic Day is very much important for the success and prosperity of Indian democracy.

On the particular day of 26th January, at the end of the Republic awareness week, a cultural program was organised by the college. At the very beginning, a flag upliftment ceremony took place and a splendid parade march was launched in honour of the architect of Indian Constitution Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar. Then the awareness week came to an end with a very eventful cultural function in the college premises.

When is Juneteenth? Here’s why and how the holiday is celebrated

Juneteenth may be the nation's youngest federal holiday, but the day has long been a special celebration even before it became a holiday.

The day has been commemorated for over 160 years to recognize and celebrate the day enslaved African Americans learned of their emancipation, making it official.

On June 19, 2022, President Joe Biden made Juneteenth a federal holiday by executive order. Efforts had been building since at least 1994 to make Juneteenth a national holiday, according to the Congressional Research Service. 

This year, Juneteenth falls on a Wednesday. Here's everything you need to know about the holiday and its significance.

When is Juneteenth?

Juneteenth is held annually on June 19. The date will land on a Wednesday in 2024.

What is Juneteenth?

On June 19, 1865, enslaved African Americans in the Galveston area of Texas learned of their freedom.

The news came two and half years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on Jan. 1, 1863, and more than two months after Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee  surrendered at Appomattox Court House  on April 9, 1865, bringing an end to the Civil War.

Enslavers were responsible for telling the enslaved they were free, but some ignored the directive.

This event gave rise to the Juneteenth holiday.

Why is it called Juneteenth?

The name of the holiday combines "June" and "nineteenth." It is also known as Emancipation Day, Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, Juneteenth Independence Day and Black Independence Day,  according to the Congressional Research Service .

Texas was the last Confederate state where the proclamation was announced and the first to recognize the date of June 19 – Juneteenth – statewide. Juneteenth, a day commemorating the official day enslaved people in Galveston, was first observed in 1866. The holiday spread across the country as African Americans migrated away from the South. 

Why is Juneteenth important?

It is a lesser-known fact that the Emancipation Proclamation did not result in all enslaved African Americans being freed.

Juneteenth is part of recognizing the conditions some Americans unknowingly liberated by law underwent. The proclamation, moreover, guaranteed freedom to enslaved people in secessionist states like Texas but not Union states like Maryland, which did not secede during the Civil War. The  13th Amendment, ratified in 1865, freed all enslaved people in the country .

When did Arizona start observing Juneteenth?

In 2016, the Arizona Legislature passed a law commemorating Juneteenth with a day of observance. It is not a state holiday. The first state to recognize Juneteenth as a holiday was Texas, in 1980, according to the  Congressional Research Service . More than half of the states now recognize Juneteenth as a state holiday, according to the  Pew Research Center .

When did Juneteenth become a federal holiday?

Congress passed The Juneteenth National Independence Day Act in June 2021 , a day after the Senate passed the bill with unanimous consent. Biden signed the bill into law on June 17, just two days before Juneteenth.

The federal government followed the lead of  47 states that already recognized Juneteenth . 

Do people celebrate the holiday? Is it OK to say 'Happy Juneteenth'? 

Juneteenth is celebrated nationwide with parades, barbecues, competitions for "Miss Juneteenth," rodeos, races and block parties, according to  Juneteenth.com , a resource website. A reading of the Emancipation Proclamation is also commonplace.

"Happy Juneteenth Day" is considered an appropriate greeting to mark the occasion, according to the website. The color red is also symbolic. It is featured on the red, white and blue  Juneteenth flag  and symbolizes that "from the middle passage to George Floyd, our blood has been spilled across America,"  according to Steve Williams , president of the National Juneteenth Observance Foundation.
