During the last school vacation, I went on a pilgrimage to Kandy, Anuradhapura and some of the ancient cities with my school mates and teachers. On the first day, we went to Kandy to see and worship the Temple of the Tooth Relic, Devadas and Shrines. There we lit Joss sticks, poured coconut oil in to the oil lamps, offered flowers and worshipped. Then we watched the Thevawa Ceremony and listen to an Anusasana delivered by a member of the Sangha. After around 1 p.m. we had our lunch. And walked towards the lake. We had a quiet evening. We spent that night in the pilgrims rest.

On the second day we reached Anuradhapura. First, we worshipped the sacred "Bo Tree" Jaya Sri Maha Bodhiya. Then we went to see the Ruwanvaliya, the Maha Stupa. On the way we saw a lot of sacred places and were fortunate to visit and worship eight other places called Atamasthana. Thereafter we went to Polonnaruwa. On our way we visited Dambulla where we saw the beautiful Rock Temple, Dambulla Viharaya.

Afterwards we went to Sigiriya. When we climbed up the stairs to Sigiriya, we saw the world-famous wonderful entrance which is called the " lion's mouth " which had been made in that shape.

In Polonnaruwa we visited many sacred places. We saw many large tanks which were built by ancient kings. We spent that night in an inn at Polonnaruwa.

The following day we come to Badulla. We saw the glamorous Dunhinda waterfall. After seeing the waterfall, we came to Muththiyangana Mahaviharaya. At least we came to Colombo at 7.30 p.m.

We were so happy and I will never forget our pilgrimage. If I get another chance to visit those places, I will never miss it.

I still remember how dangerous it was. But still, this adventure is a great memory.

It went slowly to the hilltop. I felt the cool breeze and looked out. It was so pretty. When we reached the top, I jumped out. It snowed that day. I started playing with it. 

But the biggest adventure came after this. We had to take horses to go to the hilltop. I have seen horses in books. But had never ridden them. I clapped my hands in joy. My father and I got onto one. It slowly started moving. I touched the soft mane of the horse and it neighed. Soon we were at the top of the mountain. I looked down and got scared. It was dark. Long waterfalls were falling from the top. I stared at it. Suddenly I could not breathe. I tried hard but failed.

I soon fainted and was about to fall off horseback. But my father immediately caught me and we came down. The people nearby helped me and I opened my eyes. I had turned blue for no air. The people gave me hot soup to drink and feel warm. Gradually I felt better. After this, we left for our hotels. That day I was scared, but today I feel it as my best adventure. I will never forget this wonderful trip.

Here’s advice on how to turn a simple “my best trip” essay into a story that will inspire others to explore the world.

Welcome home! Now that you’re back from your trip, you’d like to share it with others in a travel essay. You’re a good writer and a good editor of your work, but you’ve never tried travel writing before. As your potential reader, I have some advice and some requests for you as you write your travel experience essay.

Trip Essays: What to Avoid

Please don’t tell me everything about your trip. I don’t want to know your travel schedule or the names of all the castles or restaurants you visited. I don’t care about the plane trip that got you there (unless, of course, that trip is the story).

I have a friend who, when I return from a trip, never asks me, “How was your trip?” She knows that I would give her a long, rambling answer: “… and then … and then … and then.” So instead, she says, “Tell me about one thing that really stood out for you.” That’s what I’d like you to do in this travel essay you’re writing.

The Power of Compelling Scenes

One or two “snapshots” are enough—but make them great. Many good writers jump right into the middle of their account with a vivid written “snapshot” of an important scene. Then, having aroused their readers’ interest or curiosity, they fill in the story or background. I think this technique works great for travel writing; at least, I would rather enjoy a vivid snapshot than read through a day-to-day summary of somebody’s travel journal.

Write About a Trip Using Vivid Descriptions

Take your time. Tell a story. So what if you saw things that were “incredible,” did things that were “amazing,” observed actions that you thought “weird”? These words don’t mean anything to me unless you show me, in a story or a vivid description, the experience that made you want to use those adjectives.

I’d like to see the place, the people, or the journey through your eyes, not someone else’s. Please don’t rewrite someone else’s account of visiting the place. Please don’t try to imitate a travel guide or travelogue or someone’s blog or Facebook entry. You are not writing a real travel essay unless you are describing, as clearly and honestly as possible, yourself in the place you visited. What did you see, hear, taste, say? Don’t worry if your “take” on your experience doesn’t match what everyone else says about it. (I’ve already read what THEY have to say.)

The Importance of Self-Editing Your Trip Essay

Don’t give me your first draft to read. Instead, set it aside and then reread it. Reread it again. Where might I need more explanation? What parts of your account are likely to confuse me? (After all, I wasn’t there.) Where might you be wasting my time by repeating or rambling on about something you’ve already told me?

Make me feel, make me laugh, help me learn something. But don’t overdo it: Please don’t preach to me about broadening my horizons or understanding other cultures. Instead, let me in on your feelings, your change of heart and mind, even your fear and uncertainty, as you confronted something you’d never experienced before. If you can, surprise me with something I didn’t know or couldn’t have suspected.

I hope you will take yourself seriously as a traveler and as a writer. Through what—and how—you write about just a small portion of your travel experience, show me that you are an interesting, thoughtful, observant person. I will come back to you, begging for more of your travel essays.

How to Write the Essay

Once you've chosen your topic and your tone, think about the story you want to tell. In most cases, your essay will follow a typical story arc:

• The hook (the funny, sad, or scary sentence that grabs the reader's attention)
• The rising action (the beginning of your story)
• The climax (the most exciting moment in your story)
• The denouement (the aftermath or ending to your story)

Start by writing out the basic outline of your story. For example, "I started cleaning a guest's room and found that they'd left behind a wallet with $100 in cash. When I turned it in without taking a single dollar for myself, my boss rewarded me with a $100 gift certificate and a special award for honesty."

Next, start fleshing out the details. What was the room like? What was the guest like? What did the wallet look like and where was it left? Were you tempted to just take the money and turn in the wallet empty? How did your boss look when you handed her the wallet? How did you feel when you got your reward? How did others around you react to your honesty?

Once you've told your story in all its detail, it's time to write the hook and conclusion. What question or thought can you use to grab your reader's attention? For example: "What would you do if you found a wallet loaded with cash? That was my dilemma this summer."

I have visited London several times, and yet it is amazing how I find something new to explore every time I visit the capital city. My visit last autumn too did not fail to surprise me. With the hustle and bustle and the rich royal history, London city has a lot to offer. Since I just had a few days to spare, I wanted to make the best out of this trip.

Although vast and sprawling, I decided to visit most of the city on foot this time. Now since in my previous visits I had seen most of the tourist-y attractions already, I wanted to take the path less travelled this time to discover the hidden gems of the city. The last time I had been to London, I had missed out on the chance to visit the chock full of literature and history that awaited me in the Shakespeare Globe Theatre. Being a student of literature, visiting the place where the Bard of Avon once enacted the plays he wrote was a spellbinding moment. And guess what? I also caught a staging of the Macbeth before I left the place. Before heading towards the Hyde Park tube station, I grabbed some of London’s famous Fish ‘n’ Chips from the oldest food market of the city, the Borough Market. From Hyde Park to Tower Hill in under fifteen minutes by Tube, I began exploring the Tower of London. It was there that I heard a guard speaking about where he hailed from. A quick conversation with Peter, I had gotten intrigued to know more about his village – Suffolk in Lavenham. I asked him how to get there and Peter, being the quintessential helping guide that Londoners are known to be, told me that I could either take a car from central London. Or I could wait for the next day and take the train from Liverpool to Sudbury and then take the bus route 753 and reach in around two hours. Having nothing to do, I spent that day in the British Museum and walking on Oxford Street.

The next morning, I started my journey to the quaint village of Suffolk. I had picked up a book about the village where I learned that the village had once housed Henry III in 1257. And a bonus for all the Harry Potter fans – the village also starred in ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows’ as Godric’s Hollow where Hermoine and Harry are seen to be visiting Bathilda Bagshot. On reaching the village, the first thing that grabbed my attention was the picture-perfect silhouette of prosperous medieval England with all the half-timbered houses. The lime-washed and brightly coloured buildings added an idyllic element to the village with the De Vere House standing out from the rest. Adding to the rustic touch was the fifteenth-century St Peter Church with its soaring height of a 141ft tower. The autumn breeze welcomed me as I walked on the leaf-covered high streets. I saw some young guns cycling around in a park and called out to them for directions. My stay for the trip was an Air BnB home-stay where I had to put up with an elderly couple – the Havishams. I still remember how on reaching the gate of the house, I had caught a waft of crumpets and hot scones. After an exchange of banalities followed by me gorging on the scones, I had found out about the hidden gems from Mr Havisham who happened to be quite a cheerful talker. He told me what a must-visit Hadley’s was when in Suffolk. I had then set out with a local map to find the hidden gem. On reaching I had found that Hadley’s was a cutesy ice cream shop, almost run down, run by an old lady. Here Rebecca told me how the ice cream parlour was opened back in the 1850s and was still known for their hand-made sorbets.

Like the sorbet, my stay in Suffolk had been a sweet experience – a trip of revelation. The tour – with all the lonely walks – had in an inexplicable way helped me to get my perspectives right. It isn’t the exotic locales and the flight above the clouds that make travelling my drug. Rather, it is little but beautiful discoveries like Suffolk that feed my wanderlust. Thank you, London. ‘My trip started with me and my family making a list of necessary items and packing our stuff. Me and my family went on a 4-day trip to Udaipur, the city of lakes. ‘When I was in Class 5, we went on a school trip to Rishikesh, the famous hill station. My mother packed all my important things and told me to follow everything my teacher told me. ‘My favorite trip was to Kashmir, called ‘Paradise on Earth’. It is an Indian Union Territory, located in Northern India. There were breathtaking views, serene lakes, and snow-capped mountains. It was like I was in heaven.

After skiing, we were so hungry that my brother and I ate a hearty meal to recover our exhausted energy. We were so exhausted that we slept for 4 hours. When we woke up, we witnessed snow for the first time. We made a snowman and played Tic-Tac-Toe using sticks.

Travelling is an important part of human life, as it gives you a break from your busy schedule and makes you feel rejuvenated for a new start. It takes away all your stress and anxiety and improves your health and mind. We can explore the beautiful nature around us and meet new people. This makes us socially stable and confident. So last time I planned to visit Goa to take a break and refresh myself mentally and physically.

It was such a thrilling and adventurous trip. I enjoyed all three days spent in Goa. So if you want full entertainment and happiness in life, you must visit Goa once in a lifetime. It was my dream destination as I have heard many things about this place. So eventually I fulfilled my dream and reached Goa to enjoy my life and get away from the daily hustles of life.

I started my journey with train and then airbus and finally reached my hotel situated in the midst of Baga beach and the main market. It was the most happening place where I stayed throughout my vacation. On the very first day me and my family visited the Baga beach, once you enter this beach, you’ll forget about everything-the mesmerizing beach view, high tides touching your feet and taking away all your worries and stress. When you see on the other side, you can see people enjoying and dancing with loud music.

Goa is the party capital of India and you can experience the festivity of life here. The lush green landscape, sand, beaches and what else do you want? The water sports are the most exciting part of the trip. Jet skiing, Banana Tube Boat Ride, Parasailing, Flyboarding, Yachts And Cruises, Paddleboarding, Snorkelling are some of the water sports you can enjoy on different beaches in Goa. My favourite was Jet skiing-what an adventurous experience, I can never forget in life.

Then you can experience that royalty by entering into the cruise casinos situated in the Mandovi river. They take you to the casino through a private boat and then you can see that gala all around. People playing cards, dancing, and enjoying the delicious food on the cruise.

Aguada Fort is a popular tourist destination of Goa. So we went there in the morning, clicked some good and candid pictures over there and returned to our hotel as we had a flight in the early morning. So, I am winding it up here, it was the most fabulous vacation of my life and it still makes me happy whenever I commemorate my trip to Goa.

What could be more exciting than a trip? One finds himself in it, understands what is wrong with the place where he was born and grew up, and rethinks his whole life. An exciting journey is a sort of sip of freshness and inspiration for new beginnings. However, it’s not easy for everyone to describe and talk about their travels. What is a travel essay?

A travel essay is a story about the author’s journey to a certain place and a description of his or her emotions, feelings, and experiences resulting from that journey. The trip does not need to be to a remote or extreme location. A visit to a village with relatives whom you have not seen since childhood can be more precious and memorable than climbing to the highest peak in your country. This type of essay is usually written in the first person and includes a large number of personifications. Today travel blogs are becoming more and more popular and are not just about colorful photos. Texts play an equally important role.

Tips on writing a travel essay

It is important to be able to interest your reader and make them read the story to the end. If you start your story with “Last summer, I went to a neighboring state,” you are unlikely to intrigue anyone. Try to start your essay with a quote or a phrase that will make you want to dig deeper. “Jump faster, what are you waiting for? He’s already right behind us! “my friend shouted.” The reader immediately has many questions: Where should he jump? Who is chasing them? Will they be able to run away? Breaking the chronology also works fine if you have the task of enticing the reader. Never write an essay when you are still traveling

During the trip, it is better to write down the details and emotions that you get in new places, but not to write the whole essay. You’ll do that when you get back. You need the information to calm down, and the analytical part of the brain will come into play.

Do not rewrite Wikipedia

No one is interested in reading about the Eiffel Tower in Paris for the thousandth time or about the year the Colosseum was founded and who fought there. Leave it to Wikipedia. Stop and think about what you know that’s not on Wikipedia. For example, it doesn’t know what flavors fill the streets of Paris, where they sell delicious buns in Amsterdam, and where to find the biggest bicycle parking .

Tell Stories

The most powerful “hook” to attract readers or listeners is a good story. Something that brings the story to life and what is ultimately memorable. When you tell a story about an architectural monument, no one will remember what year and style it was built. They will remember the legend associated with it. Stories can be written about anything.

Add emotions and dynamics to your essay

When approaching the text critically, however, do not forget about the emotional component. Try to write not so much in words as in images. A genuinely fascinating text should capture the reader, teleport him to the very heart of your story. The reader should feel the air temperature, sounds, tastes, and fragrances that surround you. Do not be afraid of metaphors and epithets.

Do not emphasize the negative aspects of the journey, but do not hide the mishaps

Everyone knows that delicate things can spoil the mood. You get off on the wrong foot, and the day is ruined. You should not confuse your expectations with the actual state of things. However, when you stand on a sea urchin with that very foot, for example, where the encounter with him could not have happened, that’s another story. This experience makes your report special. That’s where practical advice is born.

What should you remove from the travel essay?

• pathos and pathetic (they kill the text and make it dull);
• other people’s ideas (use your own words and feelings);
• the beautiful (magnificent, luxurious, delightful — these epithets no longer have any meaning). It’s better to talk about tactile sensations, smells, and tastes;
• lengthy descriptions, unnecessary details — banalities and common places;
• cliches and stamps (“narrow, cobbled streets,” “indelible impressions,” “the fall was due to a loss of balance”);
• exclamation points and ellipses (their abundance reveals the author’s powerlessness).

You should especially double-check those facts where you are 100% sure.

If the truthfulness of the story cannot be confirmed, but it is fascinating, there are magic expressions such as “they say,” “there is a version that,” “according to a local legend…”.

Today I will talk about a trip I made to (name of the place) accompanied by (companionship during the trip).

We began to prepare for the trip, prepare the necessary equipments and booking with the tourism company that organizes this type of trips.

I prepared food and drink for the trip. The food contained sandwiches, juices and dessert. He (who was with you) prepared entertainment and fun necessary during the trip.

We contacted the tourism company one day before the trip day to confirm the date and place of the bus that will take us to the (trip destination).

We woke up early in the morning and took our bags and went to the assembly point designated by the tourist company.

The distance between the city where I live and the destination of the trip is (distance in km) km. The bus took (time period) to get to the place.

On our way, we saw beautiful scenery and lots of amazing things. We passed through a mountainous area with many high volcanic mountains and the road was winding and difficult. The nature of the area was harsh and did not have many aspects of life due to the scarcity of water. It had only some Prickles and short plants.

Then we passed through a plain flat area. Water was available, which has contributed to the spread of greenery, plants and green grasses.

We saw a wild rabbit crossing the road in front of the bus. It was very agile and beautiful.

On our way to (the place of the trip), we stopped for a break on the way and dined in a small restaurant on the road.It was a restaurant serving traditional food, which is famous for its region. It was delicious food.

The bus started on the road again to complete the journey and arrived on (arrival time to the place of the trip).

We went to the hotel as soon as we arrived to put our bags and change our clothes and rest for two hours before starting the trip program. The view from the hotel was great and the hotel rolled out the red carpet.

Our trip program began two hours after our arrival at the hotel, where we gathered in the hotel lobby and set off to visit the beautiful city landmarks according to the trip plan of the tourism company.

The trip lasted three days during which we toured the city, visited archaeological and entertainment sites, markets, factories and companies, and bought souvenirs for friends and family.

After the trip, we thanked the trip supervisor and the tourism company for their great efforts and commitment to the program.

We are preparing for the next trip to be organized by the tourism company.

The following is excerpted from her new memoir, “A Light Through the Cracks,” about the day she returned home to the U.S. 

Amsterdam, August 2000

By the time my boyfriend, Tommy Caldwell, and I made it to Amsterdam’s gleaming, sterile airport, we had been passed along a half dozen times, like an important but increasingly well-worn package. Military helicopters had brought us and our other two climbing partners from base to base. We’d endured a surreal ride on a private jet from the last military base to the capital, Bishkek, traveling alongside the tipsy and jovial president of Kyrgyzstan. He’d patted us on the shoulders like a grandfather and claimed us long enough for a photo op and a speech to local media in a language we couldn’t understand. Then he handed the four of us off to the American embassy, which scrambled to find us flights home. A few days later, Tommy and I drove across the Kazakhstan border, in a hired car with a diplomatic escort, to the international airport in Almaty, and finally a commercial jet took us from Central Asia to the edge of the Atlantic. Now we had just one more flight to go.

Our tickets were a last-minute mess, and we needed to check on our connection. As we crossed the terminal, I carried a brown paper gift bag from the airport candy shop — despite what we’d been through, I still wanted to bring my older brother a present from this trip. I watched the families clustered around the gates, the lone business travelers perched at the bars, scanning each face around me. I’d been on edge through practically every step of the journey: The embassy in Bishkek had felt almost safe, but at the hotel where they’d sent us to get some sleep, I’d felt vulnerable and stayed vigilant.

In the airport, I was hungry again. When we’d made it to the second army base, the one that felt like a cluster of portable classrooms set down on a vast brown plain, we’d stuffed ourselves with barley and warm buttered bread, but I could not stay full. I had just eaten two chocolate croissants. Still, my stomach felt like a cavern. My brother didn’t really need a present, did he?

I ate half the chocolate in the bag before we got to our gate.

The line at the KLM Royal Dutch Airlines counter felt so orderly. The whole airport did. Just existing there felt like getting a big, soothing hug. When we’d boarded the flight in Kazakhstan, the passengers had formed no line. Everybody just pushed in a scrum toward the plane. Tommy and I stood frozen, like the good, shocked scouts that we were, and got lost in the flood. I felt so fragile, so extremely fragile, and so resigned to that fragile state.

We weren’t safe. That was obvious to me. No line, no order, no rule of law. I loved rules. People smoked openly on that first plane.

“Next,” the flight attendant said as we arrived at the counter. Her voice was as professionally cheerful as her uniform: light blue skirt, light blue jacket, white blouse underneath.

“We’re here to check in for our flight,” I said.

“Wonderful. May I please have your boarding passes?”

I mumbled something apologetic and handed her a few crumpled, dirty sheets of paper. “I think we have to get our seats and stuff from you.”

She pinched her brow as she read our mess of documents. She typed vigorously. I was sure this meant we weren’t going to make it home.

“Can you wait one second?” she asked, flashing a strained smile. She disappeared behind a wall.

I looked at Tommy. He stared into the blank space where the woman had just been. I couldn’t tell if he was as scared as I was, if he was also monitoring the people pooling and flowing around us for any threat. I felt like I had grown an invisible antenna that vibrated continually, never at rest. Never letting me rest. A memory tried to surface inside me: a body in silhouette, sailing off a dark cliff. A crunch, and an exhale. I forced it back down.

Two blond attendants now appeared where there had been one.

“Can you tell me: Was it something KLM did?” the new flight attendant asked.

I looked back at Tommy. Did he know what she was talking about? Did she know what had happened? Tommy shrugged.

“Wait, what?” I said. “What was something . . . ?”

“Well, um, how to say this,” the flight attendant said. “It says on your tickets, ‘Emotionally distressed passengers, please take care.’ So, we are just wondering if it’s something KLM did.” She looked concerned and defensive in her caring, like a hospital billing manager. She didn’t want to know the answer, but she had to ask.

I didn’t want a stranger to try to comfort me, but I did feel the need to comfort her. So I said, “Oh no, definitely not. We were just kidnapped and we want to go home.”

I couldn’t believe how easily the sentence came out. We were just kidnapped . . . I’d never said it so plainly before.

The flight attendant exhaled all her breath at once, stunned and relieved. “Well, good,” she said.

Well, good?

“KLM does our best. How about business-class seats for you two?” She printed our fresh, flat boarding passes. Tommy and I boarded the plane.

We ate every meal and every snack that was offered to us on the long ride home. My hunger was like a portal opened into a galaxy — infinite, absolute. When I was in middle school, I used to watch my older brother, David, eat, stunned by the mountain of food he could consume. Now, it felt strangely freeing to eat with that type of abandon. I hadn’t done that since ninth grade, when I became obsessed with climbing.

I could eat, but I still couldn’t sleep. My anxiety kept me wide awake, and my wakefulness in turn meant I had nothing but space and time for the anxiety to spin itself tighter in my body. I kept wondering if the plane would crash. That seemed possible, maybe even probable, given how the rest of our trip had gone. An appropriate ending, in a way. I wondered if I’d be scared. What would Tommy say to me before impact? Would it hurt? Our backpack, stuffed at our feet, was filled with souvenirs purchased in a blur during our strange interlude in Bishkek, between our flight with the president and our diplomatic drive across the border. I had stuffed the paltry remains of the airport chocolate into our bag alongside the rest of the things we’d acquired: a hand-carved wooden chess set, a wool hanging. Proof that we’d done something major and been somewhere cool. What were we thinking?

The backpack that sat at our feet had been lost in transit when we’d first landed in Kyrgyzstan, full of hope for our climbing adventure, and was waiting for us, perversely intact, at the hotel in Bishkek after our escape. We’d left San Francisco with 20 expedition duffels, and all I had left was this backpack filled with trinkets from a country to which I’d never return. Maybe that was why we’d bought them, with the money Tommy had wadded up in his sock just before we were marched away from our camp at gunpoint. Maybe it was some attempt to fabricate a decent memory of the place.

My hands trembled the whole 12 hours to San Francisco. I knew I needed sleep, but if the plane did crash, wasn’t I supposed to be awake for that? I had no idea how to act, what to do or say or who to be when we saw our parents. I’d left as a 20-year-old girl full of herself, ready for the world, sure I was doing something extraordinary. I was living out the dream I’d stared at in the posters I hung on my bedroom wall: climbing to incredible heights in far-off places. My mother had hardly traveled, certainly not by my age. I’d felt so awfully superior as I’d walked down the jetway when we left. I didn’t even turn back to wave.

My parents had given me everything — pride, freedom, confidence. They trusted me. They trusted my decisions. They trusted the world. Now I was returning home a broken mess. I’d spoken to them a few times from the embassy in Bishkek, the words mainly drowned in my tears. I wanted to be small again, so small I could crawl through the phone into their arms, where they’d hold me and shush me and stroke my head. I wanted my mother to say, “Mama’s here, Mama’s here,” just like she always did when I was a girl. I wanted to shrink back into that little-girl body and lay my head in her lap and cry.

How was I supposed to carry myself getting off the jetway? Was the idea to act strong, like I was fine? I was weirdly good at that. Or should I literally run into their arms?

They were so kind, so present, and gently but firmly on my team. But inside, I always felt nervous, like there was a line I was afraid to cross, like I needed to be tougher, solid, unbreakable. And even if I could lay my head in my mother’s lap and have her say, “Mama’s here,” would that still work to soothe me? I was not the same person I had been when I left. My thoughts flapped like the loose end of a film in an old-fashioned movie projector, the front reel spinning empty.

I looked over at Tommy. Maybe he’d know what to do. His head was slumped at a 45-degree angle to his chest, his mouth dropped open, snoring. He was sick. His brain was more lucid and less spastic than mine, but his body was breaking down. He had a fever. I envied Tommy’s oblivion. I felt so alone.

We landed. My palms were sweating, but Tommy’s hands felt strong. That felt like a plan: I’d hold his strong hand and we’d present a united front, though I hadn’t told him about my looping, flapping mind. I was trying to stay composed — for him, for me, maybe for my parents too. We collected our bag of souvenirs from under the airplane seats. The souvenirs promised our trip was normal. We were normal. I grabbed a free chocolate bar and a package of cookies from the plane’s galley as we exited. I never did anything like that, but now instead of saying, “Don’t eat that, Rodden,” I thought, “Just in case we don’t have any other food.”

I didn’t race off the plane like I had seen people do in movies, straight into their loved ones’ arms. Instead I walked so slowly that other passengers started passing us. I was desperate to return home, to the narrow twin bed in my parents’ house, on our quiet block filled with minivans and white Honda sedans, to replant myself in the flat farmland around Davis, California, to recommit to the safe wide sidewalks. I just didn’t know how. I wondered if people could tell we’d changed: if we walked differently or stood slightly less straight, if we’d absorbed so much fear and terror that we now emitted it.

Mayor Adams meets pope, tours migrant center on trip to Rome

The mayor went to Rome, saw Vatican City and met the pope on a recent three-day trip.

Mayor Eric Adams was in Italy to attend the World Meeting on Human Fraternity, a global peace conference.

“Clearly there’s something special about Pope Francis, just down to his interactions with you. It was clear how attentive he was,” Adams said.

Adams spoke to the pope for a few minutes and had some specific requests.

“Please pray for us as we deal with the many conflicts globally. The war in Sudan, what is happening in Haiti, what is happening in the Middle East. I discussed Robert Kraft’s organization to end antisemitism,” Adams said.

The mayor said the pope responded in the affirmative and then asked Adams to pray for him.

“I think that some people have a level aura and energy and the ability to just calm people in different situations, and I think that’s what he possessed,” Adams said.

The mayor said ahead of the meeting that he was excited to see the pope.

“In my prayers, I thank God for having the opportunity this morning,” Adams said.

Adams also delivered remarks to the global conference on Saturday. His speech focused on issues facing major cities.

“Mayors say it all the time. It’s a fraternity that many of us understand. It’s the same issues from housing to public safety to economic recovery to educating children to making sure our citizens are employable,” Adams said.

Adams used the last day of his trip to visit local communities and migrant centers.

The mayor started Sunday by visiting a migrant center outside of Rome. Adams said his goal was to see how Italy handled their own influx of migrants.

“Probably the top thing is how fast they are able to cycle the migrants and asylum seekers out of the welcome center. Within two months, they target folks into working, trained, teaching them basic Italian and moving them forward through the system,” Adams said.

The mayor said he plans to potentially use the best practices he saw in Rome back in New York.

On Sunday, Adams also made stops in Jewish and Muslim communities, visits that came as Adams has been dealing with pro-Palestinian protests and antisemitism in the city.

“As I moved from those different houses of worship, there was the same underlying theme. Be kind to your fellow man. Be there to assist them as they move forward. And let your faith be shown through you as you move about your daily life,” Adams said.

The mayor’s trip was funded by the foundation that hosts the conference. Adams returned to New York City on Monday.

“There's some pretty great places to hike in Andalusia as well if you want to be in nature,” says one Reddit user.

Go from city to beach without breaking the bank in Portugal

Portugal ranks highly as a top destination for first-time solo travellers.

Reddit users recommend starting in Porto , the home of port wine. It’s “ walkable and the locals are great”, says one Reddit user.

From here, take the train to Lisbon for “excellent” and “inexpensive” food, with plenty of English-speakers to help you on your journey.

For more money-saving, get the Lisboa Card - a pass that covers transportation , discounts and entry to over 50 museums and monuments - recommends one Reddit user.

“It's discounted/free admission to a bunch of local landmarks, plus unlimited metro/bus rides, plus free rides on the commuter trains out to Sintra (definitely worth visiting, especially Pena Palace - but go early in the morning) and Cascais,” they say.

Once you’ve had enough of city life, continue south to the Algarve’s Atlantic beaches - reachable in three hours by train.

Explore ancient temples and golden beaches in this English-speaking archipelago

Malta comes highly recommended for English speakers worried about communication - it’s one of the country’s official languages alongside Maltese.

The compact island is easily navigable by bus or taxi, making “great, modern party towns, gorgeous historic cities… lovely beaches and countryside all accessible within an hour or so from your hotel,” says one Reddit user.

Don’t let the country’s small size fool you though - with three islands to explore, you won’t get bored. Don’t miss the ancient Ggantija temple complex on Gozo , whose megalithic structures are over a thousand years older than the pyramids of Giza.

Drawing on cultures from across the Mediterranean, the country’s seasonal, rustic food draws on Italian and North African influences.

“It's a wonderful place to start working all this stuff out for yourself,” says one Reddit user. “One of my favourite destinations that I’ve ever travelled to. I can’t think of a better stepping stone to solo travel in Europe,” adds another. “Locals are friendly, food is superb, and it’s unbelievably easy to explore.”

Choose your own adventure: Where to go and how to save on summer vacations

Revenge travel is so last year.

“It's not necessarily about just getting out of the house anymore,” said Sydney Stanback, Global Insights and Trends lead at Pinterest, which has seen more than 1 billion travel searches and more than 10 billion travel saves over the past year. 

Sure, many of the usual suspects are once again among the most popular destinations across multiple search engines this year, but she said this summer, “It's more so about traveling with intention.” 

According to NerdWallet’s Summer 2024 Travel Report , 45% of Americans plan to take a trip requiring a hotel stay or flight this summer with expenses averaging just under $3,600. A fifth of those travelers expect to go into debt to pay for vacations.

What is the best place to travel in summer? 

The answer is subjective, especially this summer.

“Everyone's kind of choosing their own adventure based off of what their needs are for travel,” Stanback said. 

Pinterest’s Summer 2024 Travel Report found summer travelers are most interested in adventure, exploring mysterious or uncharted destinations, and rest. Searches for “quiet life” jumped 530%, but that doesn’t mean the same thing to everyone.

“My mother actually just took a yoga retreat to Panama,” Stanback said. “That's what she needed to do in order to get the rest that she needed and the well-being that she needed. But for me, when I think of rest and restoration, I simply think about going to a beach spa and just sitting and being by myself.”

Solo travel remains popular. Solo travel searches reached an all-time high in Google in January, but again, not for everyone.

“For Gen Z specifically, that need is to gather and reconnect with their community because they were in isolation for so long and during very meaningful moments in their lives,” Stanback said. She noted group travel and road trips are of keen interest to Gen Z.

“It's not necessarily about traveling and going out and going to restaurants and going to bars and clubs,” she added. “We actually see that a lot with younger generations. They’re kind of stepping away from that and really considering their well-being when they're taking time off.”

Expedia’s Summer Outlook and Google Flights identified the same cities among their most searched summer 2024 destinations based on flights, though rankings varied by platform.

Allianz Partners found slightly different results in their analysis of “more than six million flight itineraries for trips between five and eight days in length for travel booked between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day.”

Instead of LA and Vegas, Allianz named Boston and Honolulu among this summer’s top five domestic destinations. Internationally, San Jose del Cabo, Mexico; Oranjestad, Aruba; and Punta Cana, Dominican Republic, made Allianz’s top five, instead of Rome, Paris and Tokyo.

“I am expecting crowds to rival last summer's in popular overseas cities,” Expedia’s travel expert Melanie Fish said, noting how places like Barcelona and Venice are trying to curb overtourism. “They're trying fees and if that's not enough, they're going to have to go even further.”

How can I save on a trip?

Summer trips are already costly for many travelers. “Americans with household income under $100,000 accounted for nearly half (46%) of intended leisure travel spend in summer 2023,” according to Deloitte’s Facing travel’s future report from April.

Expedia’s Fish shared five tips for booking summer 2024 vacations:

◾ Bundle your trip. Booking airfare and a hotel at the same time can earn you deep discounts.

◾ Travel midweek or later in the summer if it's an option. You'll save money and save yourself from fighting crowds. 

◾ Fly early in the day … The early bird who takes the first flight of the day will typically get a better price and a lower chance of delays and cancellations.

◾ Book once, earn twice. You can stack rewards from your travel credit card (and) your airline.

◾ Just go. Don't pressure yourself to create the trip of a lifetime … Do it in a bite-sized chunk if possible. 

'Expensive in every way': What travelers should expect this summer

How far ahead should I book travel?

“The sweet spot is now,” Fish said. “We're within that 21- to 60-day pre-travel window to save around 15% on airfare, so now is the time to plan. That means ready, set, but maybe wait until August to actually go.”

She said travelers can save an average of $250 on international flights if they wait until the peak summer travel season passes. 

“It's 15% cheaper on average to fly domestically in August versus June, 30% cheaper to fly to Europe in late summer, and 55% cheaper to fly to Mexico and the Caribbean in August,” she said. “Of course, August is peak hurricane season , so that has something to do with that price dip.”

Iowa AG Brenna Bird joins Donald Trump entourage in NYC, calls hush money trial 'a travesty'

Iowa Attorney General Brenna Bird called the charges against Donald Trump a “scam” Monday as she joined the former president's entourage at a New York City courthouse where he is standing trial in a criminal hush money case.

Bird, a Republican, has been an outspoken Trump supporter, endorsing him ahead of the 2024 Iowa Caucuses and using her elected position to aggressively target Democratic President Joe Biden's policies .

In video footage , Bird can be seen Monday morning entering the courthouse behind Trump along with a gaggle of his supporters, including U.S. Sens. JD Vance (R-Ohio) and Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.), and U.S. Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-N.Y.). Vance is reported to be a vice presidential contender as Trump seeks another term in office.

Bird’s office confirmed to the Des Moines Register she was in attendance, and a spokesperson said no taxpayer money had been used to fund her travel.

During a mid-day break in court testimony, Bird joined a news conference outside of the New York City courthouse with fellow Trump supporters, including Vance and Tuberville.

She said she traveled from Iowa to represent the red state's support for the former president, who is running to defeat Biden in November.

"We need him back as our president leading our country again," Bird said. "My background is as a prosecutor, and what I saw in that courtroom today is a travesty. Politics has no place in a court of law."

Bird said Trump should be campaigning, not spending time in court. She claimed the charges brought against Trump by a federal grand jury are a "scam" to prevent him from winning a second term.  

"They try to charge him with all these ridiculous things that include a star witness who is a perjurer, disbarred, convicted of lying," Bird said. "It tells us the state we are in this country right now."

The Iowa Attorney General’s office issued a statement in which Bird again railed against the trial, saying in part: “I am glad to stand with President Trump in New York today in opposition to the lawfare being waged against him."

The Iowa Democratic Party criticized Bird's appearance in New York.

“Iowans deserve to know whether their hard-earned money is going to a political photo op 1,100 miles from the State Capitol," party chair Rita Hart said in a statement. "Even more so, Iowans deserve an attorney general that’s focused on serving her constituents — not her political ambitions."

Bird has made a point of opposing the Biden administration at every turn. A Register analysis published in January found that her office has brought, joined or filed more than a dozen briefs against the federal government.

When Trump won the Iowa Caucuses Jan. 15, he lauded Bird in his victory speech, telling the Iowa crowd, "She's going to be your governor someday."

Michael Cohen, Trump's former lawyer, took the witness stand  Monday in an effort to convince the jury that Trump authorized him to pay $130,000 in hush money to porn star Stormy Daniels ahead of the 2016 election, and that Trump arranged to reimburse him in a scheme that would cover up the hush money.

Trump is charged with 34 felony counts of falsifying business records. He has pleaded not guilty.

Cohen was disbarred after pleading guilty in 2018 to campaign finance violations and lying to Congress, among other crimes. Prosecutors  hope to overcome that baggage  and persuade a jury Cohen is telling the truth.

Movies | review: ‘gasoline rainbow’ is a memorable teenage road trip along an improvised oregon trail.

This forlorn image signals the start of one end of “Gasoline Rainbow,” the latest genre blur from the brothers Bill Ross IV and Turner Ross opening this weekend at the Music Box Theatre. A beat-up Econoline-type van interrupts the silence. In it are five Wiley high school graduates, nervously thrilled with the getaway they’re about to make. The kids haven’t stolen anything, other than the van “borrowed” from one of the friends’ folks. But time and the meager options afforded by Wiley have stolen plenty from these five. As we share their zigzag, life-altering itinerary, a 513-mile backroad odyssey gathers an emotional momentum we’re grateful to experience.

The Ross brothers continue their exploration of docu-fiction here (more on that shortly). The five friends make their introductions by way of their school IDs popped onto the screen. Their names: Tony Aburto, Micah Bunch, Nichole Dukes, Nathaly Garcia and Makai Garza. “Gasoline Rainbow” chronicles their fortunes on the road, the chance encounters that take them to a bonfire gathering here, a truck stop there. Their destination: the Pacific Ocean, and a raging “End of the World” party somewhere on the coast they’ve heard about.

I’d rather not detail the encounters, other than to note the overnight crash pads and bull sessions offered by various relatives and newfound acquaintances. We come to know these three young, good-hearted men and two good-hearted young women as they drink, smoke, dance, skateboard and discover what it feels like to open up about their worry about what’s next. For all that, “Gasoline Rainbow” lets the story of their lives and this particular road-trip story go where it goes. I found the movie very moving, and often funny (discussion topics range from “The Lord of the Rings” to Enya), and not far in some respects from the roads taken by Chloe Zhao’s “The Rider” and “Nomadland,” portraits of rootless or questing American spirits in a time without a compass.

And this is where we talk about what the movie is, and isn’t, and acknowledge that the Ross brothers make no bones about it.

“Gasoline Rainbow” is not a documentary. It’s fiction. The five central figures use the real names of the first-time actors playing versions of themselves, and a lot of what they talk about comes from their real lives and doubts and yearnings. But the narrative is an extended form of outlined and improvised imagination. The Ross brothers roughed out the idea in early 2020, an eyeblink before the pandemic; a little over a year later, in between pandemic lockdowns, they started filming with their cast members. Plenty of visual cues and tip-offs arrive early in “Gasoline Rainbow,” indicating the fictional/nonfictional blur afoot; an arresting shot, filmed (I think) from the front of the van, shooting inside, delights the eye while consciously or subconsciously telling you it’s not a documentary.

Neither was the Ross’s previous film “Bloody Nose, Empty Pockets,” a ripe 2020 ensemble portrait of the regular customers of a Las Vegas dive bar on the evening of the 2016 Trump victory. Actors and non-actors alike created those parts, just as the five expressive and unerring amateurs fill out parallel versions of themselves in “Gasoline Rainbow.”

Also, regarding the town of Wiley: There isn’t a Wiley, not really. It’s fictional. So it really is a nowhere kind of town, literally.

The movie suggests something more interesting, I think, than 100% truth or 100% fiction. We’re all from somewhere; we all wonder if we’re doing it right, whatever “it” is. We all dream of freedom somehow tethered to our families, our friends, our sense of belonging. The Ross brothers belong to a long, coast-to-coast family of docu-fiction landmarks, from New York-set “On the Bowery” (1956) to Los Angeles-set “The Exiles” (1961).

See it, and see what you make of this new and quite wonderful example of this in-between cinematic tradition — and of Tony, Micah, Nichole, Nathaly and Makai, both real and imagined.
