The Innovative Writing Advanced Certificate presents a unique form of graduate study in creative writing, closely intertwining the practice of writing with literary and aesthetic inquiries. The program creates a collaborative space in which we reflect on the ethical and political implications of creative writing within the matrix of global citizenship; tease out evident and obscured connections between contemporary and historical texts; consider how aesthetic concerns are inflected by various systems of power; and create rigorous, sensuous, contentious-above all, evocative-forms of writing that embody imaginative and forward-thinking strategies.

Completing the Creative Writing Certificate Program
Academic requirements.
Students must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.3 overall in required and elective certificate courses in order to be awarded the certificate upon completion of their Bachelors Degree.

The English Department awards credit for courses take elsewhere that approximately correspond — in content, approach, and/or pedagogy — to courses offered in our program.

Contemporary and Modern Literature requirement, choose one of the following: 392 Literature, Writing, Practice, 326 Modern British and Irish Fiction, 328 Multicultural British Literature, 337 20th C Lit in the U.S., 338 The Novel in the U.S., 339 American Poetry, 353 Experimental Fiction, 357 Contemporary Literature, 361 Modern & Contemporary Poetry, 362 Poetry Movements, 363 Modernist Poetry, or 387 Women Writers.

ENG 390 : Creative Writing: Poetry ENG 391 : Creative Writing: Fiction ENG 434 : Advanced Poetry Workshop ENG 435 : Advanced Fiction Workshop *Students may request substituting 1 300-level writing workshop with a similar writing workshop course in a different genre, such as ENG 393 : Literary Non-Fiction or TH 485 : Play Writing. *At least one workshop must be at the 400 level.

NAME publishes creative fiction and poetry from currently enrolled UB undergraduates.
