Biocenter Innsbruck

Medical University of Innsbruck

About the Biocenter

The Biocenter at the Medical University of Innsbruck was established in 2006 with the goal to become a leading institution for biomedical research in Western Austria. In year 2012 eleven spatially dispersed institutes moved to a central location providing state-of-the-art infrastructure and core facilities that enable interdisciplinary biomedical research. Currently, the Biocenter hosts 30 principal investigators and 200 researchers and supporting staff. The Biocenter is the major hub for the bachelor and master programs in Molecular Medicine, and is supporting the undergraduate program of Medicine as well as the main PhD program at the Medical University of Innsbruck. The major research focus is on molecular and cellular mechanisms of human diseases including cancer, infectious diseases, neurological disorders, and rare diseases.

PhD positions on cancer cell biology - Medical University Innsbruck, Austria

Logo of Science 4 Refugees

Job Information

Offer description.

Are you passionate about delving into the intricate mechanisms behind cancer progression? If the answer is yes, join us at the Institute of Pathophysiology, Medical University of Innsbruck, Austria, where two fully funded PhD positions await you in the Baschieri research group.

Research Topics:

1 - Topography of the Tumor Microenvironment : to escape from solid tumors and form metastases, cells have to navigate into an intricate mesh of collagen fibers. Aim of your PhD will be to understand what strategy do successful metastatic cells use to move in this complex environment.

2 - Energy-efficient strategies for cell movement : cell migration requires a lot of energy. We think that metastatic cancer cells can develop strategies to move more efficiently. Objective of your PhD will be to investigate how cells adapt their energy production for efficient migration.

Your profile:

  • Master’s degree in biology, life sciences, or a related field.
  • Interested in fundamental research.
  • Team player.
  • Fluent in English (it is our working language).
  • Previous experience with live cell imaging, and/or mechanobiology would be a plus.

What you will receive:

  • Become part of an enthusiastic and diverse international team.
  • Work in a state-of-the-art laboratory facility located in Innsbruck, the “capital of the Alps”.
  • Engage with the global scientific community through conferences and networking opportunities.
  • Fully funded position available immediately (here you can see your gross salary: FWF ).

Besides work, the Medical University Innsbruck offers several benefits, including free German classes and discounts for sport and cultural activities. Indeed, Innsbruck offers plenty of opportunities for outdoor adventures such as skiing, hiking, and biking, while also fostering a cultural atmosphere thanks to the presence of two major universities.

Neuroscience PhD Program

The PhD Program in Neuroscience is designed as a course of study introducing students into basic, translational and clinical neuroscience. Research areas cover the entire range from molecular and cellular neuroscience over physiology, behavior and translational to clinical neuroscience. Students are exposed to recent theories about brain function and malfunction and up-to-date research strategies. They acquire the technical skills of planning, conducting and evaluating complex experiments and clinical studies. Participation in the program forms a cornerstone in the training of young researchers interested in pursuing a career in academic, clinical or biotechnological environments. The PhD Program in Neuroscience has been associated with two excellence graduate schools funded by the Austrian Science fund: SPIN – Signal Processing in Neurons and CavX – Calcium channels in excitable cells . The Neuroscience PhD Programm Innsbruck is a member of the Network of European Neuroscience Schools (NENS) .

Lectures and Courses

The program offers three partially overlapping teaching modules, all based on fundamental neuroscience training.

uni innsbruck phd biologie

The minimum study duration for a PhD program at the Medical University of Innsbruck is 6 semesters, equivalent to 180 ECTS points. The program is a full-time degree course. The PhD candidate must provide verifiable evidence of his/her ability to work on a scientific problem independently and with scientific rigor. The PhD thesis is a detailed, written presentation of the PhD candidate’s work on their research project. The completed, positively assessed PhD thesis will be weighted with 160 ECTS points. During his/her training, the PhD student must attend curricular courses corresponding to a total of 20 ECTS points (workload of 500 hours). Of those,

8-10 ECTS are allocated to core subjects, 6 ECTS points are allocated to journal clubs/thematic seminars, 4-6 ECTS points are allocated to general subjects.

The final examination takes the form of a public defense of the PhD thesis in front of an examination board. The requirements for admission to the thesis defense are:

– successful passing of all required courses, – successful completion of the thesis.

Mühlegger: Deadwood: the influence of the rotting degree of Picea abies on the stability of biochar

Nowadays waste wood or forest wood residues are used for energy generation if not recycled directly. Partially decomposed wood cannot be recycled due to the loss of quality and strength properties, hence important resources are left untapped. In this project, residual forest wood, is to be converted into charcoal via Pyrolysis. This product can then be used in wastewater treatment plants for water filtration or in agriculture, increasing water storage capacity, improving yields and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Therefore, playing an important role in fighting climate change.

This study aims at closing the knowledge gap regarding the influence of different wood decomposition stages of Picea abies on biochar characteristics. The project will compare chemical and gravimetric fiber analysis with non-destructive near-infrared spectroscopy (NIR) to determine if NIR can effectively be a quick quality assessment in field to set optimal pyrolysis parameters in the future.

Kirschner: Effects of climate change-driven temperature increase on brown algae-parasite interactions

The effects of climate change are becoming obvious in a wide variety of ecosystems. One example is the increasing overall temperatures of the water in the world oceans. In this work, two perspective scenarios of temperature increase in the world ocean were used to test the response of a pathosystem involving the brown alga Macrocystis pyrifera and two oomycetes Anisolpidium ectocarpii and Eurychasma dicksonii (strains Eury05 and Eury96) and one phytomyxid (Maullinia ectocarpii) infecting it. We used complementary molecular (qPCR) and microscopy (bright field and fluorescent microscopy) methods to assess the influence of temperature on the growth and infection phenotype of the pathosystem at 10 °C, 15 °C and 20 °C. The preliminary results show that different parasites have different temperature optima, in particular the infection potential of E. dicksonii and M. ectocarpii decreases with rising temperatures and disappear at 20 °C, whilst A. ectocarpii seem to be favoured at higher temperatures. According to these observations, the effects of changing temperatures are likely to be mediated in a species-specific way in the interactions between parasites and hosts, potentially affecting the coastal habitat.

Marte: Exploring the enzymatic potential of AF

Optimizing biogas plants is essential for meeting rising energy demands and efficient resource use. A challenge is the use of energy crops due to the difficult breakdown of lignocellulose, which impede energy extraction. Research on Neocallimastigomycota, anaerobic fungi known for breaking down lignocellulosic material, offers a possibility for improvement. These fungi produce cellulosomes, enzyme complexes that dislodge lignin and aid in breaking down plant materials, improving nutrient access for other microorganisms. This Masterthesis focuses on the isolation of (novel) Neocallimastigomycota and investigation of their enzyme activity. Enzymes of interest are Avicelase, Carboxymethyl-cellulase (CMCase) and Xylanase. The goal is to enhance our understanding of these fungi's enzymatic potential and the implementation in biogas plant.
