Introduction
According to the latest rankings by the Times Higher Education (THE), Tohoku University has been named the best university in Japan for the fourth year in a row. The ranking evaluates universities based on a wide range of criteria, including entrance exam scores, job placements, and research grants, as well as qualitative factors such as surveys of stakeholders. Overview of Rankings
The Times Higher Education is a globally renowned education magazine that conducts rankings of universities worldwide. Its rankings are considered one of the most prestigious university rankings, alongside those by QS and ShanghaiRanking. The rankings assess universities based on various factors such as entrance exam scores, job placements, research grants, educational outcomes, and internationalization efforts. It is unique because it also considers qualitative factors such as surveys of stakeholders in addition to quantitative metrics.
Criteria for Ranking
The rankings consider a wide range of criteria to evaluate universities, including the quality of education and research, the international diversity of students and faculty, and the universities’ contributions to the economy and society. The rankings are conducted through surveys of stakeholders and analysis of quantitative data, such as entrance exam scores and research funding.

Japanese universities climb rankings in Times global survey
Several Japanese universities shot up in the latest annual ranking published by British magazine Times Higher Education, with the University of Tokyo rising to 29th, the highest position for a Japanese institution since 2015.
In its World University Rankings 2024, the University of Tokyo climbed from 39th place in the previous ranking while Kyoto University jumped from 68th to 55th place.
The magazine said the notable rise in the rankings of Japanese institutions was due to a newly added metric on patents.
Tohoku University, Osaka University and the Tokyo Institute of Technology were also among the institutions rated more highly due to the new indicator that rewards contributions to patents.
The magazine looked at 1,904 institutions in 108 countries and regions, evaluating their performance across five areas including research, international outlook and knowledge transfer.
The top 10 was dominated by British and American institutions, with Britain's University of Oxford ranked first and Stanford University in the United States second.
China's Tsinghua University and Peking University came in 12th and 14th place respectively.
According to a Times official, links between universities and industry are strong in Japan, making it easier to put university research into practice.
However, Japanese universities tended to rate poorly on indicators relating to international outlook and overall research output, with the magazine noting that Japan "faces some real challenges to its international competitiveness."

APU ranks # 1 for Environment in Times Higher Education Japan University Rankings 2022!
Mar 25, 2022
On Thursday, March 24 at 17:00, it was announced that APU ranked #1 for Environment in the Japan University Rankings 2022, released by the Times Higher Education (THE), a British journal specializing in higher education. It was also the 5th consecutive year that APU was declared the #1 private university in western Japan.
This year, APU took the nation’s top spot in the pillar of Environment, a category that "looks at the make-up of the student and faculty body at each campus, helping students to determine whether they will find themselves in a diverse, supportive, and inclusive university environment."
For any educational institution in Japan that aims to provide an international learning environment, the restriction of international academic exchanges during the COVID-19 pandemic is a severe challenge. However, under such circumstances, APU continued to accept more than 90% of international students as full-fledged students (not exchange students). The university striving to maintain its multicultural and multinational learning environment even under the pandemic led to this evaluation.
In the pillar of Engagement, which considers the degree of satisfaction of current students as well as reputation among high school teachers, APU ranked 3rd in Japan once again. As for the field of Outcomes, which reflects graduates' success and reputation among researchers, the university was ranked 32nd.

How do rankings work for Masters study?
International rankings use all sorts of metrics to assess universities and they aren't all equally relevant to postgraduate study. That's why we've put together a guide to university rankings for Masters students .
So, how good are Japanese universities for Masters study?
Japan holds its own in the global rankings, with multiple universities in the top 100 of the QS rankings.
However, these league tables don’t tell the whole story. In particular, one of the metrics that the Times Higher Education ranking uses is how many times a paper has been cited in English. Japanese scholars don’t always have the same tendency to publish in English as academics elsewhere in the world, which may help explain the relative lack of Japanese universities at the top end of the Times Higher Education worldwide league table.
One way to get past this is to look at rankings that are designed specifically for Asian universities. For example, the Times Higher Education Asia University Rankings ‘recalibrate’ the metrics used for the international table to give a clearer indication of Asian universities’ relative position. As you can see in the table below, Japanese institutions feature heavily in the top 100 of this particular ranking.

Purdue University jumps to No. 33 nationally and to world’s top 100 in 2024 Times Higher Education World University Rankings
In the latest THE rankings, Purdue surged 7 spots domestically and over 40 spots globally, and ranked No. 9 among U.S. public land-grant universities.
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. —
Purdue University is among the world’s best academic institutions, according to yet another highly regarded ranking. The 2024 Times Higher Education World University Rankings, released Wednesday (Sept. 27), ranked Purdue the No. 33 university in the U.S. and No. 86 worldwide, up from No. 40 and No. 127 in the last round and reflecting Purdue’s rising global reputation.
Among U.S. public universities, Purdue ranked No. 14, and among public land-grant universities, Purdue ranked No. 9.
Across all universities worldwide, Purdue is the only university from Indiana among the top 100.
“What we do each day is not about any ranking, but instead rankings partially reflect what we do relative to higher education peers in the state and the country,” Purdue President Mung Chiang said. “Purdue will continue to be distinct, humble and competitive in our small steps and giant leaps. One brick higher in excellence at scale.”
The World University Rankings are produced annually by Times Higher Education and have been compiled since 2004. This 20th edition marks the first substantial methodological update since 2011, adding new measures focused on the quality of research and patents. The rankings are based on 18 calibrated indicators that measure an institution’s performance.
“As we aspire to be a top public land-grant university, rankings such as these reflect our strong and continued progress,” said Patrick J. Wolfe, provost and executive vice president for academic affairs and diversity. “Our continued rise is due entirely to the consequential work our faculty, students and graduates produce each day.”
Additional rankings
Purdue scored a top 10 placement among U.S. public universities and advanced five spots to No. 27 among all U.S. universities in the QS (Quacquarelli Symonds) World University rankings in June, which included both undergraduate and graduate/research components and placed Purdue again as a top 100 university in the world as well.
The Times Higher Education rankings come just a few weeks after Purdue’s best-ever showing in U.S. News & World Report’s 2024 Best College rankings of undergraduate programs . Purdue jumped eight spots to No. 43 overall, and moved to No. 17 among public universities, on a list of 435 ranked national universities. The university also scored a sixth consecutive top 10 Most Innovative (No. 7) ranking. Thirteen undergraduate programs were individually ranked in the top 10 nationally, with agricultural and biological engineering (No. 1 in U.S.), industrial engineering (No. 2), and aeronautics and astronautics (No. 3, historic high) earning top 3 placements.
THE’s latest rankings are consistent with a bevy of other accolades Purdue has collected in recent months, which reflect a range of ranking emphases and methodologies:
- This past July, Purdue was ranked the No. 3 most recognized public university in the U.S. and No. 10 worldwide in the Global University Visibility rankings.
- Purdue was also named one of the World’s Most Innovative Companies — coming in at No. 16 overall and No. 1 in education — and the only university among Fast Company magazine’s Top 50 Most Innovative Companies .
- Earlier this month, SmartAsset recognized the university’s excellence at scale by ranking Purdue the No. 6 Best Value among public universities in the U.S. and No. 15 overall .
About Purdue University
Purdue University is a public research institution with excellence at scale. Ranked among top 10 public universities and with two colleges in the top 4 in the United States, Purdue discovers and disseminates knowledge with a quality and at a scale second to none. More than 105,000 students study at Purdue across modalities and locations, with 50,000 in person on the West Lafayette campus. Committed to affordability and accessibility, Purdue’s main campus has frozen tuition 12 years in a row. See how Purdue never stops in the persistent pursuit of the next giant leap, including its first comprehensive urban campus in Indianapolis, the new Mitchell E. Daniels, Jr. School of Business, and Purdue Computes, at https://www.purdue.edu/president/strategic-initiatives .

GCSE results day 2024: Everything you need to know including the number grading system
Thousands of students across the country will soon be finding out their GCSE results and thinking about the next steps in their education.
Here we explain everything you need to know about the big day, from when results day is, to the current 9-1 grading scale, to what your options are if your results aren’t what you’re expecting.
When is GCSE results day 2024?
GCSE results day will be taking place on Thursday the 22 August.
The results will be made available to schools on Wednesday and available to pick up from your school by 8am on Thursday morning.
Schools will issue their own instructions on how and when to collect your results.
When did we change to a number grading scale?
The shift to the numerical grading system was introduced in England in 2017 firstly in English language, English literature, and maths.
By 2020 all subjects were shifted to number grades. This means anyone with GCSE results from 2017-2020 will have a combination of both letters and numbers.
The numerical grading system was to signal more challenging GCSEs and to better differentiate between students’ abilities - particularly at higher grades between the A *-C grades. There only used to be 4 grades between A* and C, now with the numerical grading scale there are 6.
What do the number grades mean?
The grades are ranked from 1, the lowest, to 9, the highest.
The grades don’t exactly translate, but the two grading scales meet at three points as illustrated below.
The bottom of grade 7 is aligned with the bottom of grade A, while the bottom of grade 4 is aligned to the bottom of grade C.
Meanwhile, the bottom of grade 1 is aligned to the bottom of grade G.
What to do if your results weren’t what you were expecting?
If your results weren’t what you were expecting, firstly don’t panic. You have options.
First things first, speak to your school or college – they could be flexible on entry requirements if you’ve just missed your grades.
They’ll also be able to give you the best tailored advice on whether re-sitting while studying for your next qualifications is a possibility.
If you’re really unhappy with your results you can enter to resit all GCSE subjects in summer 2025. You can also take autumn exams in GCSE English language and maths.
Speak to your sixth form or college to decide when it’s the best time for you to resit a GCSE exam.
Look for other courses with different grade requirements
Entry requirements vary depending on the college and course. Ask your school for advice, and call your college or another one in your area to see if there’s a space on a course you’re interested in.
Consider an apprenticeship
Apprenticeships combine a practical training job with study too. They’re open to you if you’re 16 or over, living in England, and not in full time education.
As an apprentice you’ll be a paid employee, have the opportunity to work alongside experienced staff, gain job-specific skills, and get time set aside for training and study related to your role.
You can find out more about how to apply here .
Talk to a National Careers Service (NCS) adviser
The National Career Service is a free resource that can help you with your career planning. Give them a call to discuss potential routes into higher education, further education, or the workplace.
Whatever your results, if you want to find out more about all your education and training options, as well as get practical advice about your exam results, visit the National Careers Service page and Skills for Careers to explore your study and work choices.

Last updated 12 June 2024
At Times Higher Education we create university rankings to assess university performance on the global stage and to provide a resource for readers to understand the different missions and successes of higher education institutions.
Our rankings cover the three main missions of university activity: research, teaching and impact.
Each university in the rankings has a detailed profile, with a breakdown of its overall scores across the rankings and supplementary data designed to help students. For example, there are data on the staff-to-student ratio at each university, the total income per student, the proportion of international students and the gender breakdown of students.
Some universities have enhanced profiles to showcase their student offer and their individual strengths and qualities beyond the rankings data. To raise your university’s global profile with THE , please contact [email protected] .
THE ’s rich data have become a vital resource for students, helping them to make one of the most important decisions of their lives – who to trust with their education.
To help students get the most out of our rankings, we have a dedicated Student section , providing student-focused news and advice and featuring a wide range of student blogs with invaluable first-person advice and tips.
The rankings are also widely used by faculty to inform career decisions, by university leaders to help set strategic priorities and by governments to help monitor policy. Why? Because the THE rankings are based on one of the richest databases of university performance in the world.
Ten ways THE has improved the university rankings landscape
One ranking to rule them all? Absolutely not
Research rankings
The THE World University Rankings , founded in 2004, have an emphasis on the research mission.
Our carefully balanced and comprehensive methodology was developed after more than a decade of working in consultation with the world’s leading universities, and builds on our team’s deep understanding of what makes a university truly world class.
Our team of data experts evaluates world-class universities against 18 separate performance indicators, covering the full range of a top university’s essential areas of activity: teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.
THE ’s rich data has become a vital study advice resource for students, helping them to make one of the most important decisions of their lives – who to trust with their education.
The overall THE World University Rankings, featuring more than 1,500 institutions, are accompanied by a series of subject-specific rankings to help students determine where to study:
- Arts and humanities
- Business and economics
- Clinical and health
- Computer science
- Engineering
- Life sciences
- Physical sciences
- Social sciences
All the rankings tables can be filtered by country and can be personalised to create a new rankings against any one of five key areas of performance, to suit user preferences.
You can read more about why THE ’s methodology is trusted by students and watch our 90-second student guide to the rankings methodology below.
To create the THE World University Rankings 2024 list, THE ’s data team drew on a comprehensive and growing database containing hundreds of thousands of data points on more than 2,600 global research universities, and employed a global Academic Reputation Survey of more than 68,000 leading scholars, who provided us with their expert views on the world’s leading universities.
In addition, we also analysed 134 million citations to 16.5 million academic publications (from Elsevier’s Scopus database) published over a five-year period between 2018 and 2022.
As well as the flagship THE World University Rankings, THE has drawn on its rich database, and in some cases collected additional data, to create a series of regional and thematic rankings, offering deeper insights into a wider range of universities against a wider range of missions, and providing students with even greater resources. Our major rankings are:
- Asia University Rankings This is focused on universities in Asia. The methodology gives more weight to knowledge transfer, research income and research productivity, while teaching and research reputation count for less. This reflects Asian universities’ close ties to industry as well as the fact they tend to be younger than their Western counterparts and, therefore, are typically not as well known or well regarded across the world. - Young University Rankings This includes the world's top universities aged 50 years and under. The methodology reflects the special characteristics of younger universities, giving less weight to subjective indicators of academic reputation. Click to read analysis of the 2024 results
- Latin America Rankings This includes universities in the Latin America and Caribbean region. The methodology gives less weight to citation impact and more weight to teaching and research environment metrics. Click to read analysis of the latest results
- World Reputation Rankings This explores the reputation of the world’s leading universities, based on the largest invitation-only academic opinion survey Click to read analysis of the latest results
- Arab University Rankings This includes universities in the Middle East and North Africa. The methodology include three bespoke metrics, while the calculations of some of the other metrics have been adjusted to reflect the features of universities in the Arab world. - Interdisciplinary Science Rankings The inaugural ranking will be published in 2024. It will list the world's top universities for interdisciplinary research in science disciplines. Click to read about the ranking
Impact rankings
In 2019, we launched our first Impact Rankings, the only global league table that assess universities against the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Alongside the overall Impact Ranking , there are 17 tables showing universities' progress towards delivering each of the SDGs.
We use carefully calibrated indicators to provide comprehensive and balanced comparisons across four broad areas: research, outreach, stewardship and teaching.
We have compiled a list of frequently asked questions about our Impact Rankings, but if you have any further questions, email [email protected] .

Teaching rankings
Our first teaching rankings – exploring the second of the great university missions – was launched in 2015.
These rankings give students and their families the information they need to help them choose where to study, and have a survey of current students at their heart. The overall methodology explores four key areas, which we call pillars: resources, engagement, outcomes and environment.
- Japan University Rankings This ranking is based on 16 performance indicators, with three of the metrics drawing on the THE Japan Student Survey. Click to read analysis of the latest rankings
- Online Learning Rankings The inaugural ranking will be published in late 2024. It will include universities across the world that offer online undergraduate and/or postgraduate degree programmes.
Between 2017 and 2022, we published the US College Rankings , in partnership with the Wall Street Journal . We no longer publish this ranking.
Hybrid rankings
The first Sub-Saharan Africa University Rankings was launched in June 2023. THE created this ranking in partnership with Mastercard Foundation to assess the impact of higher education across the region, based on five pillars: resources and finances, access and fairness, teaching skills, student engagement, and Africa impact.
The Sub-Saharan Africa University Rankings methodology was developed by THE ’s data team, in consultation with university leaders across sub-Saharan Africa. The project was initiated by a consortium of African and international higher education organisations including Botho, Maverick and Mycos, and led by Ashesi University in Ghana. THE independently managed all data collection and calculations.
