Therefore, I have decided not to study here in [home country]. I do have multiple options abroad for this course and hence would like to carry my education of Early Childhood Education and Care abroad.

Furthermore, there are other challenges in the education system of [home country]. For instance, courses are limited and in a lot of cases, courses have little or no anticipation. Theoretical knowledge and cramming are given more emphasis than a practical one. Course content follows an old and unrevised syllabus where teaching methodologies are exam-oriented. The global interaction and learning experience will also help me gain my professional and academic objectives. The Australian degree is globally recognized and it is one of the safest, vibrant and diverse countries. Unlike countries like the UK and USA where crime rates are increasing day by day. 

 The climatic condition of Australia is quite similar to my home country unlike countries like the UK, USA and Canada where weathers are dramatic and chilly most of the year. Furthermore, Australia is a culturally diverse country with a large number of international students from all over the world where Melbourne is in the second position and Sydney is in the Fourth position. Even the living expenses are less expensive than countries like the UK, USA and Canada. On the other hand, the language barrier is the most common problem based on international students in European and Asian Countries. Since Australia is an English speaking country which secures the language barrier of international students. I also found out that the Australian government has also formulated the ESOS Act (Education service for overseas students) to secure international students' rights. It also has many policies to help its students like Tuition protection Schemes (TPS), Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC), and Australian qualification Framework (AQF.  The duration of the degree provided by Australians is suitable for students. After my research, the course and campus I choose are [university] which is located in western Sydney as Australia provides many facilities to overseas students to improve their qualifications. So I think Australia would be the best-suited country for me to pursue my higher education.

When choosing the location in Australia, I especially prefer to go for Sydney, as Sydney is the largest, oldest, and most beautiful and world’s most multicultural city. It is the capital of New South Wales and situated on the southwest coast of the country. With hot summers and gentle, mild winters, Sydney’s temperate climate is favourable especially for Asian Students like us to adjust with the climate that is similar to my country. It will not be too difficult for us to find a part-time job during our studies, as there are many attractive work opportunities. After our hard work at study, we can immerse ourselves into many interesting activities in Sydney-for example, sightseeing, shopping, joining entertainment activities and enjoying a diverse spread of food culture. 

Furthermore, there are numerous recreational centres and shopping malls. We can experience not only Australian Festivals and events but also festivals from China, India, Egypt, Japan, Malaysia, Thailand and Poland. This will be a great chance for international students like us to soak up the culture. As well as being an Australian financial and economic hub, Sydney is the home of beaches. After choosing Australia as my study destination, finding a better and affordable institution was a difficult job as there was a wide range of institutions available. I wanted to pursue my degree in a reputed institution for which I carried independent research on multiple options available. The research showed institutions like [college names]. Almost all the colleges mentioned here provided only the Vocational Educational Training programs lacking a higher degree with fees ranging from AUD ** to ** annually. Among them, I found [university] only a government university, which offered a Bachelor in Early Childhood Education in Sydney. Early childhood education personal statement example.

I believe that early childhood is the most crucial stage in a child’s life, it has become my goal to be an early years teacher so I can offer support at this important stage and help children learn and grow as they interact with the world around them. The skills children learn at this age will stick with them for life such as reading, writing and communication, to be able to a part of this process would be very rewarding.

During my A-levels, I completed a weeks work experience at St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School. I was a teaching assistant for year groups two and three. This role allowed me to work closely with the children and support them in their lessons. This experience was gratifying, and I enjoyed helping the children learn and solve problems. I found myself excited to get to work and see the children and they seemed just as excited to see me. Although I only spent a week at St Joseph’s, I still formed a friendship with lots of the children and learned some essential skills for working with young children such as safeguarding and following a curriculum. Lastly, I taught a child with special needs and supported him in his lessons.

After my A-levels, I decided to take a gap year. Although the pandemic disrupted my original plans I tried my best to make the most of this time and keep motivated. Throughout lockdown, I completed an online course on the Open Learn website through the Open University called “An Introduction to Social Work.” This course covered a variety of subjects including the Attachment Theory developed by John Bowlby. This theory highlights how the brain develops differently depending on what kind of experiences it receives, especially in the early years. I found this very fascinating as I have loved learning about people since I started studying sociology at GCSE. I am intrigued by what influences people to act the way they do and have a particular fascination with how children develop in society. Becoming an early years teacher would allow me to make a difference in children’s lives and see this development first hand.

During my gap year, I also developed leadership and teamwork skills while working at my local café: Deli-Licious. I started this job in 2019 as Saturday help and gradually progressed and gained more responsibility, such as gaining more hours and eventually becoming a key holder. This customer-facing role allowed me to develop good people skills and taught me how to deal with the many characters I came across every day. I was also often in a leadership role allowing me to gain the skills and experience needed to be a good team leader. Furthermore, this job required great communication skills which are very useful when working in a team, especially while looking after children.

I have recently been offered and enthusiastically accepted a job at Bright Horizons Day Nursery as a Nursery Assistant. My responsibilities will include supervising children at playtime, engaging with the children in learning and play activities as well as working with the other nursery staff and attending staff meetings. This job will allow me to build skills such as childcare, proactivity, and time management which will help me build a strong foundation for early years teaching. I am excited to start this job as it is the first step I am taking to pursue a lifetime career in early education.

Studying early childhood studies at university will be a perfect opportunity for me to further my understanding of children in early years and allow me to learn about new areas I haven’t come across yet. My goal is to gain practical experience working with young children while also gaining relevant qualifications to be the best early years teacher I can be.

This helps them find the right candidate for the courses offered.

What is a Statement of Purpose (SOP)?

A statement of purpose (SOP) also referred as personal statement, is a letter that explains your intent to study abroad , what is your academic and professional interest, and value you will provide to the graduate program you’re applying for. Once submitted, it is reviewed by the admission panel and usually includes content related to your career path, interest, professional contributions, goals, and the reason that encouraged you to pursue a particular program. In simpler words, the SOP is your first introduction to the university as an applicant and it communicates your personality, intent, and goals to the selection committee of a university. It is usually written in the form of an essay but there are exceptions too, as some universities keep it question-based. It also becomes a deciding factor for admission into your preferred institution. Do remember, that an SOP is different from a personal statement.

An SOP allows you to highlight your overall personality to the university. If you have a weak profile, a good essay compensates for it by highlighting your ambitions and future goals. The university assesses you on your present and plans rather than dwelling on your performance in the past. Your content should be structured, well written, and develop a story. Here’s a perfect format for writing the Statement of Purpose. 

Introduction: Start with describing your childhood, what most interested you when you were a little kid and how it shaped you as a person.

Part1: Subtly talk about your undergrad achievements, also mention your current subjects that pushed you towards the course

Part2: Explain your projects, internships, training, and the learnings from them. 

Part3: Let them know what you like about their university e.g., Research, Faculty, labs, campus, courses etc.

Part4: Tell them about your long-term and short-term goals, like where you see yourself in 5 years.

Conclusion: In the end, add how you will be a valuable asset to the university and your home country.

Create an outline for your SOP and work accordingly. Sharing an anecdote that developed your interest in your subject is a good way to build your introduction. Create pointers and categories, list down your relevant achievements and expertise, and most importantly, your reason for choosing the course and the university.  

Work on your draft

Focus on sharing your learnings and knowledge during your education and industry experience. Limit the use of technical terms and use an active voice when writing your SOP. If there is a gap year  or an academic issue, optimistically address them. Make sure your SOP has a clear introduction and conclusion. Remember, you should always write your SOP in reverse chronological order.

It’s important to review what you’ve written. Re-analysing will help correct the flow, vocabulary, sentence construction errors, long sentences, and other grammar issues. Get a second opinion, maybe from your professor, senior, or an IDP counsellor. Make sure you proofread properly and double-check before submission.

What is the word limit for an Statement Of Purpose?

While writing an impactful SOP try not to go overboard, you must keep in mind that the person responsible for evaluating your essay would be responsible for analysing the SOPs of thousands of other students who have applied to the same course and university as you. It is best to stick to the word limit. The word limit of an SOP is ideally between 800-1,500 words unless communicated otherwise by the university. You should choose your words wisely to be precise and write an apt essay that is easy to understand and does not repeat or exceed the word count. 

How do academic institutions assess an Statement Of Purpose? 

Universities and institutions anticipate your SOP to be unique to your own experiences, they will evaluate the information provided in your SOP by corresponding it to your academic details. Writing an SOP true to your own experiences would make a lasting impression on the admissions committee. If an SOP appears to be plagiarised or copied, it might get lost among other applications. Therefore, be authentic and creative while writing it.

There are no defined rules on what or what not to include in your SOP. The format may vary with the course you have opted for, your study level, the university for which you are drafting an essay or, the country you want to study in. Not writing a focused Statement Of Purpose Instead of detailing your background or history, write a precise SOP that gives a clear idea about your career goal. 

Not researching enough  Try writing an SOP beforehand as it gives you sufficient time to research. Rather than writing randomly, explain how you will benefit from studying on campus and with faculty and industry exposure from the course you have applied to.

Lying in your SOP or copying it This may lead to rejection or even permanent blacklisting, so ensure that you draft your SOP honestly and include experiences of your own instead of copying from someone else. 

Using of jargon or technical terms Writing SOP in a technical language is not suggested as it is possible that the person from the admissions committee reviewing it might not be familiar with the jargon. It is recommended to keep the language of your SOP simple and make limited use of technical terms just to explain your goals.

An important part of your application to TAFE Queensland is a well-written Statement of Purpose (SOP). The statement is your opportunity to introduce yourself to TAFE Queensland.

SOPs provide our Admissions team with an understanding of who you are, your personal circumstances in your home country; your reasons for studying including why you have chosen to apply with TAFE Queensland.

SOPs generally cover three areas:

  • your personal, educational and professional background
  • your reasons for seeking an international education and interest in our program
  • your employment goals on your return to your home country.

Successful SOPs give our admissions team a genuine snapshot of who you are including your personal circumstances in your home country.

Key points to cover include:

  • detail your educational achievements in your senior school years and any subsequent studies.
  • describe your work history and addresses any and all relevant work related to your chosen career goal.
  • describe your family circumstances and if you have dependants (spouse or children) let us know if you intend to bring them with you or will remain until your return.
  • if you have family in Australia, what relationship do they have to you and where do they live. Let us know if they will support you financially.
  • if you have travelled to Australia before (working or holiday visa) or had a previous visa application rejected you should discuss the circumstances in the first part of your SOP.

Importantly, the SOP allows you to discuss any education or employment ‘gaps’ of more than 12 months.  Why is this important? In many cases, any unexplained gaps could indicate a lack of career progression or focus or at risk of not being considered a genuine student applicant.

In the second part of your SOP, we look for the reasons why you want to study overseas, in Australia, in Queensland at TAFE Queensland. You should be clear about the benefits of the city you have chosen to study in.

The SOP should show your understanding of our program – including specific units of interest.

Key points to cover:

  • discuss why you could not do a similar program in your home country
  • discuss why you would choose TAFE Queensland over another institute.
  • explain how our program complements any previous studies and enhances your career prospects.

The final part of your SOP must cover your employment and salary expectations when you return to your home country and have completed your studies and/or period of work rights.

Successful applications often include a clear explanation of a return on investment.  You should clearly state how your studies and time overseas will be funded.

This is your chance to describe the value of gaining international experience, Australian standard education, real world skills and a competitive edge in the global marketplace.

Schools' privacy policy

The Department of Education (the department) values your privacy and is committed to protecting information that schools collect.

All staff including contractors, service providers and volunteers of the department, and all Victorian government schools (schools), must comply with Victorian privacy law and this policy.

In Victorian government schools, the management of personal information  and health information is governed by Privacy and Data Protection Act 2014 (Vic) and Health Records Act 2001 (Vic) (collectively, Victorian privacy law). In addition, the Department and Victorian government schools must comply with the Victorian Data Sharing Act 2017 .

This policy explains how Victorian government schools collect and manage personal and health information, consistent with Victorian privacy law and other associated legislation.

In addition to its obligations described in this policy, the department has limited and specific obligations under national applied law schemes which are set out in the department’s Privacy Policy (National Law) . These additional obligations relate to our role as early childhood services regulator in Victoria, and also in relation to health practitioners who are governed by the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law (Victoria). However, health information collected and managed in Victorian government schools is primarily handled in accordance with the Health Records Act 2001 (Vic) and obligations are, in practice, consistent. Definitions

Personal information is recorded information or opinion, whether true or not, about a person whose identity is apparent, or can reasonably be ascertained, from the information. The information or opinion can be recorded in any form. A person's name, address, phone number and date of birth (age) are all examples of personal information.

Sensitive information is a type of personal information with stronger legal protections due to the risk of discrimination. It includes information or opinion about an identifiable person’s racial or ethnic origin, political opinions or affiliations, religious beliefs or affiliations, philosophical beliefs, sexual orientation or practices, criminal record, or membership of a trade union.

Personal and sensitive information is regulated in Victoria under the Privacy and Data Protection Act 2014 (Vic).

Health information is information or opinion about an identifiable person’s physical, mental or psychological health or disability. Health information is a type of personal information which, because of its sensitivity, also has different and stronger legal protections.

Health information is regulated in Victoria under the Health Records Act 2001 (Vic).

Note : De-identified information about individuals can become personal information if it is re-identified or if it is at high risk of being re-identified, for example, if it is released to the public or is a small sample size.

What information do we collect?

Schools collect the following types of information.

  • Information about students and their families provided by students, their families and others – for example, contact and enrolment details, health information, and parenting and access arrangements.
  • Information about job applicants, staff, volunteers and visitors provided by job applicants, staff members, volunteers, visitors and others – for example, qualifications, working with children checks, teacher registration and banking details.
  • Information about the activities of students, staff and families if they are on school grounds (for example captured through CCTV) or using school or departmental systems (such as school networks or school-acquired software).

How do we collect this information?

Schools collect information in a number of ways, including:

  • in person and over the phone: from students and their families, staff, volunteers, visitors, job applicants and others
  • from electronic and paper documentation: such as job applications, emails, invoices, letters, and forms (such as enrolment, excursion, medical, specialist or consent forms)
  • through school websites and school-controlled social media
  • through online tools: such as apps and other software used by schools
  • through any CCTV cameras located at schools
  • through photographs, film and other recordings
  • through polls, surveys and questionnaires
  • and, in some cases, through authorised information sharing arrangements with other services.

Collection notices

Schools provide families with a privacy collection notice (also known as a collection statement or privacy notice) on enrolment and on an annual basis to communicate:

  • the reason for collecting information about families and students
  • how the information is used and disclosed
  • how to access, update and correct the information.

Schools may also send out ad hoc collection notices during the year, for example if they are adopting new technologies or processes.

Consent processes

Consent is when someone voluntarily agrees for their information to be collected, used and/or shared within or outside the school or the department.

Consent, when required, is sought in different ways and can be verbal, online or in writing, depending on the circumstances. There are many consent processes that may be applied during the school year.

Some consents are annual, for example the yearly photography consent process, while some will be for a specific purpose such as to collect information for a school event or use of a new software application.

When seeking consent for photographing students, schools apply the Photographing, Filming and Recording Students Policy .

Unsolicited information about people

Schools may receive information about you that they have taken no active steps to collect. If permitted or required by law, schools may keep records of this information. If not, they will destroy or de-identify the information when practicable, lawful and reasonable to do so.

Why do we collect this information?

Primary purposes of collecting information about students and their families.

Schools collect information about students and their families when necessary to:

  • educate students
  • support students’ social and emotional wellbeing, and health
  • take reasonable steps to reduce the risk of reasonably foreseeable harm to students, staff and visitors (duty of care)
  • make reasonable adjustments for students with disabilities (anti-discrimination law)
  • ensure, as far as is reasonably practicable, the health and safety of people in school workplaces (occupational health and safety law)
  • communicate with parents about students’ schooling matters and celebrate the efforts and achievements of students
  • maintain the good order and management of schools
  • ensure the effective management, resourcing and administration of schools
  • fulfil statutory functions and duties
  • plan, fund, monitor, regulate and evaluate the department’s policies, services and functions
  • comply with reporting requirements
  • investigate incidents in schools and/or respond to any legal claims against the Department, including any of its schools.

Primary purposes of collecting information about others

Schools collect information about staff, volunteers and job applicants:

  • to assess applicants’ suitability for employment or volunteering
  • to administer employment or volunteer placement
  • for insurance purposes, including public liability and WorkCover
  • to fulfil various legal obligations, including employment and contractual obligations, occupational health and safety law and to investigate incidents
  • to respond to legal claims against schools/the department.

When do we use or disclose information?

Using and/or disclosing information refers to how it is utilised for a specific purpose, and how it is shared and/or made available to other individuals or organisations.

Schools use or disclose information consistent with Victorian privacy law and other associated legislation, including as follows:

  • for a primary purpose – as defined above
  • for a related secondary purpose that is reasonably to be expected – for example, to enable the school council to fulfil its objectives, functions and powers
  • with notice and/or consent – for example, consent provided for the use and disclosure of enrolment details (the information collected will not be disclosed beyond the department without consent, unless such disclosure is lawful)
  • a person’s life, health, safety or welfare
  • the public’s health, safety or welfare
  • when required or authorised by law – including as a result of our anti-discrimination law, occupational health and safety law, child wellbeing and safety law, family violence law, or reporting obligations to agencies such as the Department of Health and the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing and complying with tribunal or court orders, subpoenas, summonses or search warrants, and in some circumstances to meet our duty of care
  • when required under the Child and Family Violence Information Sharing Schemes, with other Victorian schools and Victorian services to promote the wellbeing or safety of children, or to assess or manage family violence risk
  • to investigate or report suspected unlawful activity, or when reasonably necessary for a specified law enforcement purpose, including the prevention or investigation of a criminal offence or seriously improper conduct, by or on behalf of a law enforcement agency
  • as de-identified information, for research or school statistics purposes, or to inform departmental policy and strategy
  • to establish or respond to a legal claim.

Unique identifiers

The department assigns a unique identifier to every Victorian government school student in its student records system to enable schools to carry out their functions effectively. In addition, the department uses a unique Victorian Student Number (VSN) assigned to each student by the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) when they enrol in a Victorian government school, independent or Catholic school. The use of the VSN is regulated and can only be used as stipulated by legislation.

The department also assigns international students a unique international student identifier number.

Other unique identifiers may be applied by schools.

Students undertaking vocational or university education can also register for a Federal Government issued and managed unique identifier, Unique Student Identifier (USI). The USI is used to create an online record of a student’s recognised Australian training and qualifications. Students are required to have a USI before they can receive their qualification or statement of attainment.

Student transfers

Between victorian government schools.

When a student has been accepted at, and is transferring to, another Victorian government school, the current school transfers information about the student to that school. This may include copies of the student’s school records, including any health information. Parental consent is not required for this.

This enables the new school to continue to provide for the education of the student, to support the student’s social and emotional wellbeing and health, and to fulfil legal requirements.

To and from Victorian non-government schools including Catholic schools

When a student has been accepted at, and is transferring to or from a non-government school in Victoria, the current school provides a transfer note from the student records system to the new school, with parental consent.

Additionally, the current school may share information with the new school to promote the wellbeing or safety of the student or to assess or manage family violence risk pursuant to the Information Sharing Schemes.

To and from interstate schools

When a student has been accepted at and is transferring to or from a school outside Victoria, the current school provides a transfer note to the new school, with parental consent.

NAPLAN results

NAPLAN is the national assessment for students in years 3, 5, 7 and 9, in reading, writing, language and numeracy.

Schools use NAPLAN data to evaluate their educational programs by analysing results for students who attended their school.

Victorian government schools can access student NAPLAN results from the student records system. When a student transfers to or from an independent, Catholic or interstate school, with parental consent, the school where the assessment was undertaken can provide a student’s NAPLAN results to the new school.

Responding to complaints

On occasion, Victorian government schools and the department’s central and regional offices receive complaints from parents and others. Schools and/or the department’s central or regional offices will use and disclose information as considered appropriate to respond to these complaints (including responding to complaints made to external organisations or agencies). More information about the process can be found in the Complaints – Parents policy .

Complaints relating to the department’s International Student Program are managed according to the ISP Complaints and Appeals Policy .

Complaints specifically about the department’s or a school’s handling of personal information are managed according to the privacy complaints process .

Complaints about the handling of personal information on the Child Link Register will be responded to by the department’s Privacy team. For all other complaints relating to Child Link email [email protected] or contact the Child Link Enquiry Line at 1800 549 646.

Accessing information

All individuals, or their authorised representative(s), have a right to access, update and correct information that a school holds about them, providing access to information or records doesn’t increase a risk to the safety of a child or children.

Access to student information

Schools only provide school reports and ordinary school communications to students, parents, carers or others who have a legal right to that information. Requests for access to other student information or by others must be made by lodging a Freedom of Information (FOI) application through the department’s Freedom of Information Unit.

In some circumstances, an authorised representative may not be entitled to information about the student. These circumstances include when granting access would not be in the student’s best interests or would breach our duty of care to the student, would be contrary to a mature minor student’s wishes or would unreasonably impact on the privacy of another person.

Additionally, the Child and Family Violence Information Sharing Schemes allow prescribed organisations to share confidential information with each other to promote the wellbeing or safety of children, or to assess or manage family violence risk. Victorian schools and a range of other Victorian services fall under these schemes. For more information, refer to: Information sharing and MARAM reforms .

Access to staff information

School staff may first seek access to their personnel file by contacting the principal. Guidance on access to staff health information is available at: Access to health information – Employees . If direct access is not granted, the staff member may request access through the department's Freedom of Information Unit.

Storing and securing information

Victorian government schools take reasonable steps to protect information from misuse and loss, and from unauthorised access, modification and disclosure. They store all paper and electronic records securely, consistent with the department’s records management policy and information security standards. All school records are formally disposed of, or transferred to the State Archives (Public Record Office Victoria), as required by the relevant Public Record Office Victoria record Retention and Disposal Authorities. Victorian government schools are provided with tools and information to help them assess software and contracted service providers for privacy and information handling risk. Privacy Impact Assessments (PIAs) help schools to assess third party software used in a school that handles personal, sensitive or health information. Conducting PIAs helps schools to identify privacy and security risks, evaluate compliance with Victorian privacy laws and document actions required to manage any identified risks.

The European Union’s (EU’s) General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) applies to international students from the EU.For queries, contact [email protected] .

Updating your information

It is important that the information we hold about students, families and staff is accurate, complete and up to date. Please contact your school’s general office when information you have provided to them has changed.

Next steps in ensuring the integrity and sustainability of the international education sector

Next week the Albanese Government will introduce legislation to support the integrity and sustainability of the international education sector.  

The legislation will enable the Minister for Education to set an allocation for the maximum number of new international student enrolments education providers can offer.

For vocational education, these allocations will be set based on advice from the Minister for Skills and Training. 

The legislation will also deliver important reforms to strengthen the integrity and quality of international education, including the power to:

  • Prevent education providers from owning education agent businesses. 
  • Pause applications for registration from new international education providers and of new courses from existing providers for periods of up to 12 months.
  • Require new providers seeking registration to demonstrate a track record of quality education delivery to domestic students before they are allowed to recruit international students.
  • Cancel dormant provider registrations to prevent them being used as a market entry tool by unscrupulous actors.
  • Prevent providers under serious regulatory investigation from recruiting new international students. 
  • Improve the sharing of data relating to education agents. 
  • In addition, the Government will prohibit agent commissions on student transfers between providers in Australia to remove incentives for unscrupulous agents and providers to ‘poach’ students.

This is the next step in delivering on the objectives of the Government’s Migration Strategy and is informed by engagement with the international education sector. 

The Government is also today releasing the draft International Education and Skills Strategic Framework . The draft Framework will support consultation with the sector on how to implement a system of sustainable, managed growth in international student enrolments. 

The Framework will support the sustainability, quality and integrity of our world-class international education sector.

The Government will work with international education providers to limit the number of international students that can be enrolled over a particular period of time. 

If universities want to enrol international students above that limit, they will be required to establish additional, new supply of purpose-built student accommodation to benefit both international and domestic students and free up pressure on the rental market. 

International students are an incredibly important part of our economy and our communities, and we need to ensure the sector is set up for the future. 

Through the new Framework, the Albanese Government is taking an active role in supporting:

  • a sector built on quality and integrity
  • a managed system to deliver sustainable growth over time, and
  • Australian providers to take our high-quality education and training to the world.

The Framework will provide greater certainty for the sector, particularly Australia’s regional universities, and enable international education to better contribute to Australia’s skills needs.

The Government will consult with the sector on all aspects of the Framework over the coming months and release the final Framework later this year.
