Trois jours après l'officialisation de l'accord avec Al-Nassr, où il s'est engagé jusqu'en 2025 pour un salaire estimé à 200 millions d'euros par saison, Cristiano Ronaldo a posé les pieds en Arabie saoudite, lundi 2 janvier, à la veille de sa présentation officielle. Le quintuple lauréat du Ballon d'Or, sans club depuis la résiliation du contrat le liant à Manchester United en novembre dernier, a été aperçu dans la soirée à l'aéroport King Khaled, avec sa compagne Georgina Rodriguez. 

Ses premiers pas sur le sol saoudien, encadrés par un large dispositif de sécurité, ont été retransmis en direct par la télévision locale. Quelques clichés du Portugais de 37 ans, pris à la volée à l'intérieur de l'aéroport, ont fuité sur les réseaux sociaux, avant qu'Al-Nassr se fende d'un tweet officiel pour saluer l'arrivée en grande pompe de sa nouvelle star.

Pour l'accueillir, l'Émirat a vu en grand, en ne lésinant pas sur les moyens. Avant même l'arrivée de "CR7", qui sera présenté officiellement, mardi 3 janvier, à 17h heure de Paris (19h heure locale) sur la pelouse du stade Mrsool Park de Riyad, d'une capacité de 25.000 places, la capitale saoudienne s'était mise sur son 31. Sa silhouette avec le maillot d'Al-Nassr, accompagné du message "Hala Ronaldo" ("Salut Ronaldo", en espagnol), ornait la quasi totalité des panneaux d'affichage de la ville.

Après avoir passé la nuit dans un hôtel luxueux du centre de Riyad, Cristiano Ronaldo devra satisfaire à la traditionnelle visite médicale, mardi dans la matinée. Il partira ensuite à la rencontre des supporters d'Al-Nassr, en attendant d'étrenner ses nouvelles couleurs, peut-être dès jeudi, contre Al-Ta'ee, s'il est jugé apte à démarrer par le staff de Rudi Garcia.

9 things we learned from the 'Ronaldo: El Presidente' documentary

Football documentaries are being churned out so fast it's almost impossible to keep up with them all these days.

That being said, we're absolutely hooked every time we actually get chance to watch one, so much so that we'd probably watch 'The Rise of Jack Colback' if it got commissioned - let's be honest, it's probably being made as we speak.

Undoubtedly the most 'must-watch' football documentary of 2021 is 'Ronaldo: El Presidente', available to watch on DAZN now, following the Brazilian superstar as he looks to forge a career for himself in football's boardrooms having purchased Spanish outfit Real Valladolid.

With the first episode of the six-part series recently released, we've listed everything we learned from a fascinating opening episode.

1. There truly is only one Ronaldo

'The great Ronaldo?' That's how Spanish radio presenter Jose Ignacio Tornadijo reacted when told of the news Ronaldo had purchased Real Valladolid. These days the nicest way he's referred to is 'original Ronaldo' or 'Brazilian Ronaldo'. Make no mistake about it however, there is only one Ronaldo. Had the radio presenter been Brazilian or an Inter fan you'd be forgiven for saying 'well of course he thinks he's the great one because he's biased', but this is a neutral from a country where both Ronaldo Nazario and Cristiano Ronaldo have played and the latter enjoyed the best years of his career.

2. He still absolutely loves football

Some players pretend to be interested in football when in reality it's just a job to them. Ronaldo is quite the opposite. Upon purchasing Real Valladolid the Brazilian admitted it was a business venture, but also that he wanted to inspire change and hoped to help the club moving forward. "Above all I'm here to leave a legacy at this club and this city", he said of his purchase, as well as describing the thrill at the thought of leading the club to success. That's not just a fella sat in the boardroom counting his cash, that's someone who's seen the impact football can have on lives and who wants to help others in the game.

3. He seems a really humble, funny guy

We're not sure why we're so shocked to say this, but Ronaldo genuinely seems like a proper nice bloke. It's difficult to imagine someone with that much money, fame and talent being so humble, but throughout the first episode of the documentary he seems to have time for absolutely everyone (we know there's a film crew following him round but we're giving him the benefit of the doubt). At one point in the episode he's seen joking with a number of the club's players, asking them which game is the most important of the season before claiming it was a trick question and that they're all important - alright, it's hardly stand-up stuff, but it brought a smile to our face.

4. He loves to party

Alright, so we might as well change the name of this whole article to 'things we 100% already knew about Ronaldo'. The former Barcelona striker seemingly loves partying almost as much as he loves scoring goals, demanding his team get drunk after their final day of the 2018/19 season before jetting them all off to Ibiza. The big man is seen chugging red wine faster than big Sam necks Bovril, though he moves onto the water when he meets with Real Madrid president Florentino Perez prior to his side's trip to the Santiago Bernabeu. Probably a good job as well considering Real Valladolid scored a late equaliser, imagine him swinging his shirt above his head in front of Perez after two bottles of Merlot.

5. He's not your every day football club owner

Again, this one pretty much goes without saying, but for the players Ronaldo is more like a teammate than a boss. He tells the team he's not the president, he's their friend Ronnie, and when he sees footage of players complaining about pre-season he just laughs and recalls his own horrendous experiences with it. You can tell how much he misses football because he's just desperate to be part of the team and to be a mate more than a boss.

6. Absolutely everyone loves him

Ex-teammates, current Real Valladolid players, former bosses - you name it, absolutely everybody loves Ronaldo. The episode showed a number of interviews with ex-players like Roberto Carlos and Javier Zanetti, and not one of them had a bad word to say about him and they all recalled his love for the game and life in general. Similarly, the fans absolutely adore him, with supporters of every age desperate to get a photo with the great man himself - something he's all too happy to go along with.

7. He manages to make white linen shirts look cool

Now this is the real litmus test. When your dad gets the white linen shirt out on holiday you know he means business, the only problem is he looks an absolute idiot. Ronaldo might be a the athlete he used to be, but somehow he's still one of the coolest men on the planet. The Brazilian is seen wearing the dad attire during a team trip to Ibiza in the summer and he still looks like the best dressed man at the club.

8. He's absolutely minted

Probably seems a bit daft to sound surprised that a former professional footballer who represented some of the biggest teams on the planet is rich, but you'd be surprised. The amount of stories you hear of footballers throwing money down the drain and becoming bankrupt at the age of 45, but Ronaldo clearly has his head screwed on. The Brazilian revealed he bough Real Valladolid totally with his own money, with the club setting him back €30m. €30m!!!! No investors, no partners, no loans, nothing. All out of his own pocket. And he still has enough money left to buy those line shirts. Remarkable.

9. The next episode looks amazing

The trailer for the next episode looks absolutely incredible. Former Real Valladolid man Borja Fernandez is a big focus of the first episode, with the midfielder given a fitting send off after hanging up his boots at the end of the 2018/19 season. However, the club are rocked by match fixing allegations of which the Spaniard is said to have been a part of...we're already hooked. Roll on the next episode.

Was Ronaldo’s unveiling event at Al-Nassr viewed more than 2022 World Cup finals?

Claim: A user on Twitter stated that the presentation ceremony of Cristiano Ronaldo at Al-Nassr FC  was viewed more than the FIFA World Cup finals in Qatar.  

Verdict: The tweet that the presentation ceremony of Cristiano Ronaldo at Al-Nassr FC was viewed more than the FIFA World Cup finals in Qatar is misleading. No sufficient evidence or reliable source backs the claim. 

Towards the tail end of 2022, Christiano Ronaldo made a career move to leave his Manchester United club for a Saudi Arabian club, Al-Nassr FC. The deal was reported to be worth millions of Euros . Since the club announced his arrival, football fans have been anticipating the unveiling of the veteran footballer at his new club.

On Thursday, January 5, just two days after Ronaldo was unveiled at the Al-Nassr stadium, a Twitter user, Twilight ( @the_marcoli_boy ), claimed that Ronaldo’s unveiling event had more views than the World Cup final. He went ahead to say that Ronaldo is more than football (banter).

“Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr presentation had more views than the World Cup Final. He is bigger than Football🐐.”

While most users perceived the tweet as harmless football talk that idolises Ronaldo’s legendary football career, the comparison to the World Cup finals attracted substantial interest. 

A poke through Google search to see if this is the case of an isolated claim threw up an interesting result. Around the time the tweet was made, many blogs had picked the same claim, distributing it all over the search engine. A look at a few of them pointed towards another account of an acclaimed journalist, Pedro Sepúlveda .

His tweet, which was made a few hours after @the_marcoli_boy’s post, tagged the official handle of the FIFA World Cup as a show of confidence in the statement.

The tweet attracted diverse opinions; while some users believed the claim, others expressed their scepticism. A Twitter user, @Rose31999202, described Ronaldo as a king deserving the attention. “It’s a CR7 effect. We love our King.”

Verification

In his post, DUBAWA noticed that the claimant never mentioned the names of the 40 channels that screened the said presentation. He also did not define the channels to know if they were TV stations or YouTube channels, making his post a conjecture at best. 

Nonetheless, a report by Trenddetail mentioned that five channels (Saudi sports, 1SSC Saudi sports channels, Bein Sports news channel, Abu Dhabi Sports Channel, and Sports TV Portuguese channel) would telecast the presentation. However, still, there was no tally of the number of viewers. 

El-Nassr ‘s presentation video on its YouTube channel had less than 50,000 views when this report was filed. 

The world’s population, according to the UN , is 8 billion. To say three billion watched Ronaldo’s debut would mean more than 37% of the world’s population were connected. There is no evidence to back this.

Although FIFA is yet to release the official figure of viewers who tuned into the 2022 World Cup final, a report showed that BBC streaming service alone had 10 million views of the final. In 2018, 1.12 billion people watched the final match between France and Croatia. With the hype around the Qatar campaign being a better edition in terms of engagement, the viewers’ participation in 2022 may be slightly higher.

Additionally, there was no report from any credible media about this unprecedented phenomenon. This is very unusual considering the media attention Ronaldo has amassed since announcing his intentions to join the Saudi Arabian Club. 

Conclusion 

There is no sufficient evidence or reliable source backing the claim that Ronaldo’s unveiling at his new club, Al-Nassr, had more views than Qatar’s 2022 world cup finals. This tweet is misleading.
