Before you start your presentation, ask your audience what information they need. Are they familiar with your company? Have they already gone to your website for information? Knowing this might help you tailor it more to your audience’s needs by editing or even completely omitting sections of your presentation. The key is to remain flexible while presenting and only include what is really relevant to your audience.

The first step is to make sure your presentation is completely up to date .  A slide master is the easiest way to make any universal changes to your presentation, update key figures, contact information, etc., without sacrificing formatting or layout.

Even in a completely updated presentation, you may find there’s information that just isn’t relevant to your target audience. PowerPoint helps you with this by providing a quick and easy option to hide slides . In the thumbnail pane, right-click the slide you want to hide and select Hide Slide .  You can also hide multiple slides by holding down the Ctrl key , clicking on them and then selecting Hide Slide with a right-click. The hidden slides will now appear greyed out. To reverse this option, simply click Hide Slide again and you slides will be visible.

Another technique to make your PowerPoint company presentation more flexible and interactive is to use hyperlinks . For example, you could hyperlink all the titles of individual sections on your agenda slide so that you can jump from the agenda slide directly to the relevant section with a simple click. This also allows you to respond dynamically to your audience’s reactions or interests.

Pro tip : Use your company logo as a home button. Adding a small logo to the corner of each slide not only strengthens your branding, but also allows you to add a hyperlink to the agenda slide. Click on the logo and you’re back to your PowerPoint presentation overview.

Tip 7: Present like a pro

A company presentation lives and dies by its delivery . Even a perfect presentation is of little value if the delivery isn’t convincing. As a presenter, you need to communicate the passion and enthusiasm you feel for your brand through your presentation.

But don’t go overboard! Be authentic . If you can do this, your company presentation will not only reinforce your company’s positive image but will also excite your audience.

Arouse emotions by using images that speak to your audience . Involve your audience by starting with words such as “Imagine…”. Focus less on “we” (your company) and more on “you” (your audience) . These techniques will help you open the door to your audience’s subconscious – which is where most decisions are made.

 ✔ Leave enough time to rehearse your presentation . Ask your colleagues if they would be willing to serve as a test audience and give feedback on your presentation.

Tip 8: Post-presentation best practice

Always prepare a ready-to-email format of your presentation . When your customers and partners are impressed, they’ more likely to ask for a digital copy.

Never send your presentation as a PowerPoint file; always send it as a PDF to preserve its formatting and layout. Be sure to pay attention to the file size , too. A company presentation in PDF format should be no larger than about 3MB. An email attachment containing a 30MB company presentation will come across as anything but professional. There’s also a risk that the email won’t even reach the recipient’s inbox due to a limited attachment size.

✔ Create your company presentation PDF before you present . This way, you can offer it as a digital copy directly after the presentation.

That mindset helps to ease anxiety out of the equation. Avoid crossing arms or constantly pacing across the stage – that only shows impatience and lack of interest.

Keep the concepts simple. Don’t overload your presentation with unnecessary jargon; if you feel something cannot be easily explained, go break down concept by concept until the whole idea is understandable. Graphics are a fantastic asset to help you in this process and boost your performance as a presenter. 

Be mindful of not doing any of these common pitfalls:

  • Including large chunks of text on a single slide.
  • Using intense background colors that make it difficult to understand the contents of the slide.
  • Don’t read every single element in your slides – this is perceived as boring by your audience.

One particularly interesting approach is by Guy Kawasaki, author of the book “The Art of the Start.” He considers the best presentations to be handled using 10 slides, lasting no longer than 20 minutes, and using a 30pt font size. That’s known as the 10-20-30 rule in presentations . It helps you to condense the content for the sake of information clarity.

In case you don’t use a PowerPoint presentation, there are multiple ways to make a presentation memorable:

  • Tell a story, but connect with your audience in terms of body language. Play with the elements on the stage (much like TED presenters do), and let the audience feel the experience of your story by being as detailed as possible within the time frame.
  • Using a video is an incredibly engaging tool, as it lets you introduce a topic you will discuss in more detail later.
  • Use a visual impact in the form of an image with a dramatic element (i.e., climate change consequences, technological advancements, children engaging with technology or studying, etc.). This allows to hook the audience into what’s due to come next.

Knowing how to start a presentation is a critical skill all presenters ought to master. There are several approaches for this behalf, but for the sake of this guide, let’s stick to the following ones.

Most people assume that ending a presentation equals doing a recap. It is a bad idea since your audience feels as if you haven’t planned a conclusion for your presentation. 

Another bad practice is to end with a Q&A format. Although questions and answers are often a required part of any presentation, they shouldn’t be the end of your presentation. You can include questions during your presentation or opt for a proper closure of the presentation past the Q&A session.

There are some powerful strategies to give a memorable ending to a presentation:

  • Include a CTA on the lines like “Join our journey!” or similar that make the audience part of a bigger story.
  • Close using a relevant quote. The idea is to deliver something that can linger, so the audience remembers your content.
  • Use a story to close your presentation, as long as you avoid using a case study. The idea is to close with a meaningful thought, not with boredom.

In this section, we will see how to use PowerPoint to make a presentation . Starting from creating a blank presentation or choosing a pre-defined PowerPoint template to preparing the presentation structure by adding PowerPoint slides and then working on the design of the presentation, we will explain how to make a visually-appealing and eye-catching PowerPoint presentation and how to create a slideshow in PowerPoint.

1. Selecting a PowerPoint template

2. Add or delete slides in PowerPoint

  • Go to Transitions in the Ribbon, and choose a transition.
  • If the transition allows the Effect Options menu, you can alter that transition’s direction and behavior.

  • To remove a transition, select Transitions > None .

Considerations for your PowerPoint presentation

Ideal typeface and font size.

There are multiple opinions on which typeface is ideal for presentations. Experience tells us the ideal typeface to work with is one that is system-available, meaning you don’t have to install a new font in the computer used to present. Why? You may ask. Simple: If the font used is not available on a computer, PowerPoint will automatically render a different font (sometimes even a different typeface) to replace and display the text appropriately. That action, which is replicated by other software such as Google Slides, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Apple Keynote, etc., can drastically change your design. 

Font size for titles should be between 36-44 pt. Paragraph font size between 24-28 pt. Use bold to emphasize concepts, and italics to insert foreign terms or quotations. Alternatively, you can make quotations to be displayed on a single slide, using 36 pt size, in italics.

Remember, these recommendations about size are intended for presentations in a live format. If the presentation is streamed through Zoom, using screen sharing, reduce the font size by 10-15% to avoid incredibly large texts. Test your presentation beforehand to be on the safe side.

The color scheme used is a primary part of your presentation design. When defining the presentation color palette , we recommend working within the colors that make part of your branding scheme. 

If we speak about a personal presentation or a presentation with no logo, then opt for pastel tones that don’t create harsh contrast between text and background.

Above all things, avoid these conflictive color combinations:

  • Yellow and green
  • Brown and orange
  • Red and green
  • Neon colors combined
  • Purple and yellow
  • Red and purple
  • Black and navy
  • Navy and red (unless you use a muted red tone or control the amount of red used)

Sometimes, printables are a requirement by event organizers, which represents a challenge to many presenters. We want to give a helping hand on this behalf, offering tips that can improve your printing experience:

  • Always work within margins when adding content. It helps not to downsize the presentation, which often renders the text illegible. 
  • If you have to print a presentation that uses intense background colors, opt for laser printing instead of inkjet. Laser printing won’t make the paper look odd when it is full-color print. The extra price is worth it when presenting a quality product.
  • On the same lines about color-heavy presentations, ask for thicker printer paper than the average. This option is often advised when opting for laser printing.
  • Run a print proof before ordering a large printing order. Colors can significantly change due to the RGB to CMYK conversion.

Some of these tips are tailored to presentation skills, others to design ideas, but ultimately, you can take in mind these tips the next time you need to make a powerful presentation in PowerPoint.

Tip #1. Using Video Presentations

An alternative to conventional presentations is to work with video presentations . These are particularly useful in academic and educational environments since they can convey large chunks of information in a memorable, easy-to-digest format. 

If we consider that social media platforms like YouTube and TikTok are transitioning into professional content for creatives, you should consider using video presentations when the situation arises. As a plus, you can repurpose that presentation on your website or other official social media channels for your company.

Tip #2. Drop Shadows and Text Shadows

When we intend to create interesting contrasts between elements, color isn’t the only option to try. Learn how to work with drop shadows in PowerPoint to make images and objects stand out from the presentation. It is an effect that boosts a tri-dimensional feeling in the presentation.

Using text shadows in PowerPoint – with extreme caution – is an excellent method to highlight titles instead of using fancy colors or other 3D effects. Do not overdo the text shadow, as it makes the text illegible.

Giving presentations in front of an audience is, as we have seen, a process that involves many factors. One of those is the human element and the speaker’s ability to resonate with the audience. Therefore, we advise presenters to work on their presentation skills early, especially for mastering different kinds of presentation approaches, such as persuasive presentations (used in sales).

Sometimes, PPT presentation templates include quality backgrounds that make the design pop from the screen. Yet, some of those backgrounds may not be suitable for all brands in terms of color, textures, etc.

Finally, we want to remind users that almost every PowerPoint template has compatibility with Google Slides – if you intend to upload the presentation into the Cloud. Creating a business presentation from scratch is never an easy task – you always have to consider and start from the type of presentation you’d need, the goals you want to achieve through it, your audience’s profile, needs and expectations, and the context of the presentation (how and where it’s going to be delivered and how much time will you have).

But when you have a guideline of how to figure out these elements and what you should include in your business presentation, then it all starts to make sense. That’s why we decided to put together several guides and how-tos on the most common business presentations out there. We started our series with the slides you should have in your pitch deck , followed by what to add in your sales deck and now in this article, we want to cover another very common type of presentation: the company profile.

What is a company profile and when & where to use it?

Company profiles are presentations made to be used in introduction emails, to introduce your company before getting to specifics. You won’t need to actually present it, so make it explicit and easy to understand. 

Compared to a live presentation, where your focus is on the audience, in a company profile it is ok to talk about you. The reader’s purpose is to get to know you. 

A company profile is essential, from a startup to any major company

It is what most of your future partners and clients will see for the first time. What impression do you want to make? 

It happens for a lot of companies to get so involved in making the company profile that they forget for who is actually made. Putting in all the information about you will make it boring for the reader and at the same time won’t leave any mystery about you. 

As the Business Dictionary would define it: 

A company profile is a concise description which, among other items of information, includes  firm’s history, number and quality of its human, financial, and physical resources, organizational and management structure, past, current and anticipated performance, and its reputation, and the standing of its goods or services.

But let’s not get wrapped around a definition and see how we can make a unique profile. Even if it’s your company profile, we recommend you to focus on how your company helps your customers. 

It can also take many forms, some companies have it in a word document, others in a brochure, or as a presentation. We will talk about the 10 elements any company profile should have:

1. Mission statement/vision 

This is the moment where you tell customers what drives you to do what you do. Continue with your mission and what are the values the brand stands for. Without knowing all the details about your products, they judge you by your values and your vision. 

What does your company aspire to achieve? 

You probably know the mission’s company, as it is part of your brand identity. With it, or with some additional information, also cover here details as who are your primary customers and where are your operations active.

2. Brief history of the company 

A very simple way to tell your history is with a timeline slide. This way you can put all the steps that got you to the present in a visual way that is easy to understand. For the important one you can always add a short paragraph.

Keep in mind that you should include both ups and downs from your company. Show your readers that you have been through difficult moments, but you overcame them.

3. Overview of the solution

Spark some curiosity. Before getting into more details about each product/service you have, do an overview of the solution you are offering. Talk about what problem your solution tackles and how it does that.

You can also walk the reader through the process of creating this solution, what were your drivers and aspirations. This slide is meant to paint the big picture of your work.

4. Development & Growth 

Hit me some numbers. Use real facts and data to show the difference between where you started, where you are now and where the company is going. Based on the internal data make a connection with external factors. They will be of much more interest for the reader, and at the same time will be explained by your work.

Tell stories of how much effort all the company did to grow. It’s up to you if you want to share struggles your company faced or specific actions of improving.

5. Detailed Products & Services

If your company has only a few products/services you can present them individually. Each product/service needs to be described from a technical point of view ( specific characteristics ) and from a customer point of view ( how can it be used/ for what it is used ). 

In case there are too many products/services and it will take a lot of space to write about all, put them in categories. Under each category make a list of the products that it includes and add a general description. 

It would be very helpful for your potential client and also for you if you add pricing and offers for the products/services. This will save time and you will continue discussion with those who are interested even after seeing the pricing.

6. Industry recognition/position

Let your reader know what your position is in the market. Include details about market size, your contribution to the market and what is the course of the industry. Don’t forget to differentiate yourself from other players in the market. 

Even better, if you have received any recognitions or awards don’t be shy to mention them. Your readers will trust your company more if they see you have been acknowledged by specialized institutions.

7. Client portfolio & Testimonials

Show your potential partner/customer with whom you have already worked. Having testimonials form the biggest clients will bring value to your brand. Try to get a quote from a well known person in that organization or from an authoritative one.  

Real feedback will strengthen your image without being too promotional. And is more credible as it comes from an external source.

8. Case studies

A very good way to showcase your work is with a case study. This means that you take a client that you worked with and start explaining how you worked together, what were the challenges, how you handled them, what was your approach and what were the results.

This is the process from the first talk until the end of the collaboration. Focus on the relevant aspects that showcase your solution and your communication during the collaboration. It is also helpful to have feedback from the client here.

9. Team & Departments

Who are the people behind the company? 

In a startup it may be easier to present every member of the team, their background and area of expertise and it is also more important. A strong team sends a clear message, that you are ready for business.

For a bigger company having only the ones in leadership won’t be as meaningful. They must appear in the company profile together with the departments of the company. You want to transmit the image of a united company where every employee has its contribution.

10. Call to Action & Contact

A must have in your company profile is a simple push toward the next step. If the reader doesn’t know exactly what to do when they finish going through the document give them a few ideas, like:

“For more information contact us”, “Let’s schedule a call to talk more”.

In the end put the contact info where you can be found, address, email, telephone number. You can also have more contact persons for different situations. This will make it easier for the reader and will shorten the contacting process.

Company profiles can get very formal and have a lot of pages, the difference is that you can make it more interactive. Use creativity and put yourself in the customer shoes to see what they would be interested to see. May it be in a word document form or a presentation format do the best to personalize it and add your colors to it (metaphorically and literally).

Speaker 1: Good morning, afternoon or evening colleagues. Hi, my name is Brandt van de Gaast and I'm a temporary instructor at the philosophy department of Utrecht University. Now, in this quick video, I'd like to show you a few things on how you can record lectures or presentations for remote teaching. And I will especially go into the technical details, so the hardware and the software that you could use for this purpose. And hopefully some of you will find the information useful for your own teaching. Now, the things I'd like to cover are tools and software. Then I will first show and explain how to record a lecture in Microsoft Teams. Then how to do the same in OBS, which is open broadcaster software. Then I'll show you how to use an electronic whiteboard in OBS. And finally, I will combine a few of these applications together. For instance, I'll show you how you can stream your webcam together with a whiteboard into video conferencing software such as Microsoft Teams. Now, the level of tech savviness that these applications presuppose increase. So not everybody may be interested in all of them, but it's just to show you what can be done. All right, so let's first talk about some of the tools and the software. So for recording, what I like is OBS, open broadcaster software. This is open source and it's very versatile. You can download it at obsproject.com. For video conferencing and also for teaching, Utrecht University normally uses Microsoft Teams. So that's what I'll be using as well. For your presentations, you can use PowerPoint. But of course, you can also use a PDF viewer or Apple's Keynote or another bit of software. Now, the whiteboard application will require a drawing program. Lots of options there. The one I like is called SmoothDraw, which is a very minimalistic, free drawing program. The hardware that you'll need is a webcam, of course, a microphone, and usually that's built into the webcam. For the whiteboard application, a drawing tablet is useful. Now, Wacom has pretty much cornered this market. So any Wacom tablet will do the job. And of course, a desktop or a laptop computer. Okay, so let's look at the first application, recording a lecture in Microsoft Teams. And this is fairly straightforward. You go to the calendar in Teams and you click on Meet Now. You are now in a meeting with yourself and you can share the screen containing your presentation. Now, if you now hit record and give your lecture, your presentation will be recorded. If you then stop recording, stop sharing your screen and stop the meeting, then you have a video of your presentation. Now, you can find this video by going to web.microsoftstream.com. And on stream, you can edit the video. You can determine who can view it and who can delete it. You can also create a channel and you can assign the video to a channel. Now, this is useful because if you also teach inside Teams, you can simply combine the channel to your team and give the students access to that video. In your class in Teams, you can simply create a tab which contains all the videos of your channel. So, it's useful and it's worthwhile to use both Teams and Stream at the same time. It's very well integrated. Let me show you how to do this. So, let's record a lecture using only Microsoft Teams. You go to calendar and you click on Meet Now and you join the meeting. Now, you are in a meeting with yourself and you can start sharing the screen containing your presentation. So, I'm going to share this screen. Well, now I can go back to Teams and I can start recording my meeting by clicking on Start Recording. So, right now, my meeting with myself is being recorded. Now, at this point, I can simply go through my slides and give my lecture and then finish. And I will go to Teams. I will stop recording. I will stop sharing. And I will stop the meeting. Now, I can go to the website, web.microsoftstream.com, and I can look at the most recent video. And as you can see, my meeting has been recorded and here's the file. I can click on it. Well, it's not ready yet, but this is where I can set all the permissions. I can allow students to watch it. I can also add it to a channel and I can even do simple editing. So, this is the very simplest method of recording your lecture. So, the next thing I'll show you is how to record a lecture in open broadcaster software, OBS. So, first, you go to obsproject.com and download and install OBS. When you have installed it, make sure that the audio and video connections are working as they should. You then go to Sources and you add your webcam window and the window of your presentation. Now, there's a slight complication here because OBS and Microsoft PowerPoint, they don't play nice together. So, what I usually use is a PDF viewer. I convert my presentation into PDF and use that. You arrange them as desired, these windows, and you start recording. Now, let me show you how you can do this. Let's now try to record a lecture in OBS. So, first, you install OBS and this is what the main window looks like. Now, you can add sources to the Arrange window by going to Sources down here, clicking on Plus. And first, I will select Video Capture Device, which is my webcam. And I will make some adjustments. Usually, that's not necessary. And then I can resize my webcam because my face was too big just then. And I can make it like that. And now I can add another source. For instance, I can go to Window Capture and I can select my Presentation window. There it is. I can resize it and reposition it. Now, this window contains this unwanted border and I don't want that. So, I can use Alt-Left-Click to crop the window and show me only the part that I want to see. I put it in the top right, I make it bigger again and I send it to the back. So, now my webcam is on top. Now, I can just give my lecture and go to my PDF window and advance through the slides while giving my presentation. And then I can stop recording. Now, as I said, OBS does not play nice with PowerPoint, unfortunately. So, you'll have to use PDF Viewer or some other program. Now, this recording will end up on your hard drive and it will have a certain resolution and a certain file format. If you want to change that, go to File, Settings and go to the Output or the Video menu. And that's where you can adjust the resolution as well as the file format. So, that's fairly straightforward, I hope. So, the third thing I'd like to show you is how you can use a whiteboard in Open Broadcaster software. So, first you'll need a drawing program. So, start up your favorite drawing program. What I like is called Smooth Draw. Then you start OBS. And in the Arrange window, you add your webcam and the window of your drawing program. You arrange them the way you want and you start recording. Now, the whiteboard, for instance, is used by the Khan Academy. This is a well-known organization that creates math videos on the internet. Look up their channel to see how you can use a whiteboard in teaching to great effect. Okay, so let's now combine our webcam and a whiteboard in OBS. First, we add the video capture device as a source. And we have our webcam. Make adjustments if needed and then resize it. Now, then we add a new source, which will be a window capture. And we will select our drawing program. There it is. We will resize it with CTRL-left-click. Now, as you can see, this window also has unwanted edges. We can crop those by using ALT-left-click. So, there we go. And then we make it bigger. And we send it to the back. And now I can hit Record. And then I can start drawing. Which is basically the whiteboard application we were going to use. And, of course, you can assign a button to delete so that you can easily wipe the whiteboard and start from scratch. So, this is how to use OBS and a drawing program to create a lecture in which you use a whiteboard. Now, the fourth application I'd like to show you is how you can use your webcam together with a whiteboard inside a meeting in, for instance, Microsoft Teams or in other video conferencing software, for instance, Zoom. Now, to do this, you'll need a plugin for open broadcaster software, which is called VirtualCam. So, get this plugin and install it. Fire up OBS and arrange the webcam and the whiteboard window the way you want it to look. And then start running VirtualCam. So, what OBS will do is it'll take the output of the arrange window and present it to other software as if it's the webcam. So, for instance, in Teams, you can now select OBS camera as your webcam and the participants in your Teams meeting will see the output of OBS. This is one way where you can stream your webcam together with a whiteboard to other participants in a meeting in Teams. Now, of course, you can also do this in certain other ways. For instance, you could also share the window of your drawing program inside Microsoft Teams. But combining them in OBS is what I prefer. So, let me show you how to do that. All right, so let's try some other applications. Let's combine some of these. Suppose we would like to have our webcam and a whiteboard visible in a live meeting, for instance, in Teams. Well, that's possible. So, you go to OBS and you add your webcam and your drawing window as a source and you arrange them the way you want. Then you install a plugin for OBS called VirtualCam. And when you've installed it, it'll become visible in the Tools menu. So, you hit VirtualCam and then hit Start. What now happens is that OBS presents this output to other software as if it is your webcam. So, you can go to Teams, go to Calendar, start a meeting, join the meeting, and other participants in this meeting will see your webcam combined with a whiteboard and not just your webcam. And you can talk to the other participants. And meanwhile, you can draw on the screen. Draw in a live meeting. Now, this is useful for certain applications. I've been using it for question and answer sessions with my students where I would talk to them and draw on the screen using the whiteboard. Now, there are some downsides. One is that Teams sometimes crops your image unpredictably. Now, you can prevent that by asking other members of the meeting to right-click your image and to select Fit to Frame. If you select Fit to Frame, there's no cropping going on. And, of course, they can also pin your screen, which means that your screen will be more prominent on their screens. Now, of course, you could also achieve this in a slightly simpler setting. You can, of course, also have a meeting with others where you use your webcam and where you share the window of your drawing program in Teams by going to Share. So that's also a possibility. But I like this one a little bit better because you have more control over what others see. So hopefully this was also useful. All right, so that's it for today. How to Start a Presentation

Knowing how to start a presentation is just as crucial as the message you're trying to convey. If you can't start it effectively, you might not be able to leave a strong enough impact by the end of it.

TED speakers are some of the best presenters in the world, and there's a lot you can learn from their talks. Below, we've handpicked some of these presentations that start with a bang and manage to keep the audience hooked till the very end.

1 Make a provocative statement.

"I want to discuss with you this afternoon why you're going to fail to have a great career."

One surefire way to get your audience's attention is to make a provocative statement that creates interest and a keen desire to know more about what you have to say.

The presentation above, for example, does just that by making a surprising first statement that inspires surprise, amusement, curiosity and fear at the same time.

With 4.8 million views and counting, this talk by an economics professor draws you in precisely because it steers clear of the traditional talk, using blunt humor to enumerate all the irrational excuses people make for not pursuing their dreams and passions.

2 Incite curiosity.

"I need to make a confession at the outset here. A little over 20 years ago, I did something that I regret, something that I'm not particularly proud of. Something that, in many ways, I wish no one would ever know, but here I feel kind of obliged to reveal."

Another way to grab your audience by the collar is to incite curiosity. In this popular TED talk viewed over 15.4 million times, career analyst Dan Pink succeeds at getting the entire audience to look at him intently, waiting for his next word, by resorting to an opening statement that builds suspense.

Since human beings are by nature curious creatures, most people in the audience were probably asking themselves "What did he do?" and imagining all sorts of possible scenarios.

3 Shock the audience.

"You will live seven and a half minutes longer than you would have otherwise, just because you watched this talk."

In many ways related to the previous two presentation starters, this hook involves making a counter-intuitive or paradigm-shifting statement that goes against a popular belief or simply shocks due to the perceived impossibility of the proposed statement.

This introduction by game designer Jane McGonigal, for example, achieves a level of surprise by making a seemingly improbable assertion. After hearing this kind of statement, most people will want to listen to your entire talk, if not out of genuine interest, then at least for the sake of pacifying their incredulity.

(By the way, she makes good on her promise by revealing a game she designed to boost resilience, which is backed by scientific research.)

4 Tell a story.

"When I was seven years old and my sister was just five years old, we were playing on top of a bunk bed..."

As covered in a previous post , storytelling is the key ingredient that separates good, engaging presentations from bad ones that lack a clear message and persuasive delivery.

In his popular talk on the secret to being more productive, psychologist Shawn Achor tells a childhood story to lead into the effectiveness of positive psychology. He then goes on to provide concrete evidence backing his claim that pursuing happiness, rather than productivity for its own sake, actually makes you more--not less--productive.

5  Be authentic.

"I'm going to tell you a little bit about my TEDxHouston Talk. I woke up the morning after I gave that talk with the worst vulnerability hangover of my life. And I actually didn't leave my house for about three days."

Another way to draw your audience into your own world is to tell a revealing personal story. This is certainly not easy but, when done right, can quickly spark interest in your topic and build an emotional connection between you and your audience.

In Brene Brown's talk on confronting shame, she begins by admitting that she felt embarrassed over the revelations she had made in her massively popular TED talk on embracing vulnerability.

6 Quote an influential person.

One of the easiest ways to start a presentation is to quote an influential person. In these cases, it's best to use a pithy, short and relevant quote to catch your audience's attention.

In the widely viewed video above, for example, writer Andrew Solomon quotes Emily Dickinson to begin his talk on depression, an illness he asserts affects many more people than the official figures suggest.

The quote is particularly powerful and effective because it eloquently describes the state of depression from the point of view of a person who is feeling all the emotions associated with it.

7 Begin with a captivating visual.

To introduce this fascinating TED talk on how movements really get started, entrepreneur Derek Sivers uses some surprising footage to support his statements. They are especially captivating because they debunk widely held beliefs on the matter, proving that it takes more than just a charismatic leader to start a revolution of any sort.

8 Ask a question.

"Do you think it's possible to control someone's attention? Even more than that, what about predicting human behavior?"

In this attention-grabbing presentation on the flaws in human perception, world-famous pickpocket Apollo Robbins starts off by asking the audience a question that leads right into the meat of his talk, which has been viewed worldwide more than 10.5 million times.

In these cases, it's best to pose a question that will really get your audience thinking and, in the best possible scenario, challenge their prevailing beliefs or preconceptions on a certain topic.

9 Use silence.

Another effective technique--which should only be used if you're a seasoned presenter and are able to maintain your composure throughout--is to leverage silence to command a room.

Watch, for example, how musician Amanda Palmer starts off her talk by not saying a word, simply breathing in and out and using props to communicate her message.

Although you may not want to resort to both silence and using a prop in your presentation, this is a very effective dramatic technique that, if done right, quickly draws all eyes to you.

10 Start with a prop.

Considering that the audience's gaze is attracted by motion and visual objects, another way to hook them right from the outset is to use a prop.

Take a look at how best-selling author Susan Cain uses a physical object to visually complement her opening story on her first summer camp experience. It not only adds a dramatic effect, it also keeps viewers eyes on her while on stage.

11 Tell a relevant joke.

"Okay, now I don't want to alarm anybody in this room, but it's just come to my attention that the person to your right is a liar."

Humor is not only a good way to break the ice and endear the audience to you right from the outset, it can also be very effective in getting your point across if it's relevant to your talk.

Lie detector Pamela Meyer, for example, deftly uses both humor and an element of surprise in her opening statement as she tells the audience that the person to their right is probably a liar. This gets the audience to laugh and then focus on her topic at the same time.

She goes on to give some shocking statistics (such as that on any given day, we're lied to up to 200 times) and delivers an intriguing talk that has been seen close to 13 million times.

12 Use the word "imagine."

"Imagine a big explosion as you climb through 3,000 ft. Imagine a plane full of smoke. Imagine an engine going clack, clack, clack. It sounds scary."

Lastly, there are times when leading your audience to use their imaginations is the best bet. You can prompt them to do this by using the commands "imagine," "think of" or "picture this." These are just a few of the most powerful opening words for presentation.

Plane crash survivor Ric Elias, for example, uses this technique in the video above to quickly thrust his audience into the central scene of his harrowing story.

Costco wholesale corporation reports june sales results and announces quarterly cash dividend and plans for membership fee increase.

ISSAQUAH, Wash., July 10, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Costco Wholesale Corporation (“Costco” or the “Company”) (Nasdaq: COST) today reported net sales of $24.48 billion for the retail month of June, the five weeks ended July 7, 2024, an increase of 7.4 percent from $22.78 billion last year.

Net sales for the first 44 weeks were $210.55 billion, an increase of 6.9 percent from $196.93 billion last year.

The Company also announced today that its Board of Directors has declared a quarterly cash dividend on Costco common stock of $1.16 per share. The quarterly dividend is payable August 9, 2024, to shareholders of record at the close of business on July 26, 2024.

The Company also announced that, effective September 1, 2024, it will increase annual membership fees by $5 for U.S. and Canada Gold Star (individual), Business, and Business add-on members. With this increase, all U.S. and Canada Gold Star, Business and Business add-on members will pay an annual fee of $65. Also effective September 1, annual fees for Executive Memberships in the U.S. and Canada will increase from $120 to $130 (Primary membership of $65, plus the Executive upgrade of $65), and the maximum annual 2% Reward associated with the Executive Membership will increase from $1,000 to $1,250. The fee increases will impact around 52 million memberships, a little over half of which are Executive. Costco currently operates 882 warehouses, including 609 in the United States and Puerto Rico, 108 in Canada, 40 in Mexico, 33 in Japan, 29 in the United Kingdom, 18 in Korea, 15 in Australia, 14 in Taiwan, seven in China, four in Spain, two in France, and one each in Iceland, New Zealand and Sweden. Costco also operates e-commerce sites in the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Mexico, Korea, Taiwan, Japan and Australia.
