The Department of Computer Science was established in the year 1971 and is one of the earliest Computer Science & Engineering departments in the country. Currently, it has 22 faculty members and over 800 students working towards their Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral degrees. In addition, it actively participates in select off-campus programmes.

In the past, the department has attracted unrestricted research grants as well as competitive research grants from several sources including national funding agencies (DST, DEITY-MCIT, DEC, UGC, ATB and CAIR), International funding agencies (European Commission, MFA-Government of France) as well as from corporate research laboratories (Microsoft Research (Redmond), Microsoft Research (India), IBM, CISCO, TCS, Digital Think amongst others).

Part Time Ph D

A person working in reputed research organizations, academic Institutes and industries, situated preferably in the close vicinity of one of the campuses of BITS Pilani, can be admitted on part time basis provided

• the candidate is working in an organization which encourages and facilitates research
• candidate meets the requisite minimum qualification for admission to Ph. D programme of BITS Pilani
• candidate has minimum of one year work experience in related field, and (iv) candidate furnishes a "consent & no objection certificate" from his/her parent organization.

Ph D Aspirant scheme

Industries and R & D Organizations collaborating with BITS can sponsor candidates to work for Ph.D under the Ph.D Aspirants Scheme. Under this Scheme such Employed professionals working in Industries and R&D Organizations having long experience and proven competence aspiring for Ph.D. programme will be considered and will be allowed to pursue their research at their own locations of work. They will choose one BITS faculty as supervisor and or as co-supervisor.

Minimum Academic qualification:

• M.E/M.Pharm./MBA/ M.Phil of BITS or its equivalent with a minimum of 60% aggregate.
• Candidate with an M Sc/B.E or an equivalent with a minimum of 60% will also be considered for provisional admission to the Ph D programme. For Ph D programme in languages and humanities, candidates with an M.Phil/M A and with a minimum of 55% aggregate may also be considered. Such candidates have to undergo a minimum of two semester course work prescribed by DRC.
• The rare and special case of a person of high professional standing and proven competence who is deemed to have acquired mastery over all or substantial part of the course work of a higher degree of the Institute through long professional experience.
• Admission to the Ph D programme is made in both the semesters against the advertisement, which can be checked at www.bitsadmission.com, the candidates have to apply along with details required in the application form.
• A candidate is normally admitted to the Ph.D. programme after passing his/her Ph.D. qualifying examination. A few candidates may be admitted to the programme as provisional candidates before passing the Ph.D. qualifying examination. This provision is applicable to full time research scholars on the campus.

IIIT Hyderabad has announced suspension of the course work with immediate effect on 14th-March-2020 and has made it mandatory for all undergraduate students (first year to fourth year batches) and postgraduate students (MTech first and second year batches) doing only course work to return home by 18th-March-2020; research students (MS, PhD and Dual Degree students registered for thesis credits) can choose to stay and continue their research work. Institute will announce plans for finishing the Spring semester's coursework by 20th-March-2020.

PhD in Computer Science and Engineering

About the program.

The Ph.D programme in Computer Science and Engineering imparts the knowledge, skills and attitude to do world class research in the area of computer science. Doctorate students are expected to publish their work in leading international journals and conferences pertaining to their area of research. Research programmes leading to M.S/Ph.D. degrees are the main thrust in the institute. These programmes attract students from all corners of the country, in addition to some international students.

The research programmes have a limited amount of course work, essentially to prepare the student to carry out research, and to develop adequate breadth in the subject area. The main emphasis is on the research work leading to a thesis. This involves delving in depth into a research topic and includes grasping, evaluating and refining ideas, mathematical rigor, problem formulation, literature survey, implementation (programming) and performance evaluation. Typically students decide on their research area and faculty advisor within the first year while doing course work. Thereafter, the steps involved are finishing course work (to build research background and breadth), thesis proposal defense, and thesis defense. Upon clearing the requirements and the acceptance of their thesis proposal, the student works on the thesis, and its successful defense leads to the degree.

Course duration

Flexible (6 semesters minimum; 12 semesters maximum). Typical duration varies between 4-6 years.

B.E/B.Tech/M.E/M Tech all branches, M.Sc, MCA, MA (Maths).  

A student has to take and clear any 3 courses (1 in each bucket), from the following 3 buckets by getting an average grade of B or higher. Breath courses are courses that help student to gain a broad understanding of computer science and are distinct from student’s specific research work.

• Programme Overview

Admission Notification

Eligibility criteria.

Subject to the conditions stipulated in these Regulations, the following persons are eligible to seek admission to the Ph.D. programme:

• Candidates for admission to the Ph. D programme shall have a Master's degree or a professional degree declared equivalent to the Master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade 'B' in the UGC 7-point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) or an equivalent degree from a foreign educational Institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions.
• Candidates who have cleared the M. Phil. course work with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade 'B' in the UGC 7-point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) and successfully completing the M. Phil. Degree shall be eligible to proceed to do research work leading to the Ph. D. Degree in the same Institution in an integrated programme.
• A relaxation of 5% of marks, from 55% to 50%, or an equivalent relaxation of grade, is allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer) / differently-abled and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the UGC from time to time.
• The eligibility marks of 55% (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) and the relaxation of 5% to the categories mentioned above are permissible based only on the qualifying marks without including the grace mark procedures.
• A person whose M. Phil. dissertation has been evaluated and the viva voce is pending may be admitted to the Ph.D. programme on the condition that the admission is automatically withdrawn if the candidate fails to submit the marks cards / grade cards within one month after the closing date of admissions and also if he / she does not pass the M Phil with required marks / grades for admission to Ph D.
• Candidates possessing a Degree considered equivalent to M. Phil. Degree of an Indian Institution, from a Foreign Educational Institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions, shall be eligible for admission to Ph.D. programme.
• To encourage experts from industries to pursue their passions for continuous learning in the field of computer science, candidates with rich industrial experience and possessing any Master’s degree can be permitted to Pursue research in Computer Science and Applications. However, such candidates should undergo two semesters of course work with a total credit of 30.
• Candidates from abroad with relevant degree should submit equivalence certificate to pursue Ph.D. in REVA University
• Candidates with four-year degree programme with minimum of 70% aggregate or equivalent grade in UGC 7 -point scale are eligible for Ph.D. programme.

Documents Check List

The REVA University has well experienced faculty members to guide candidates to pursue research leading to Doctoral degree in various disciplines. The University has well equipped infrastructure for advanced research. All Schools have engaged in advanced research and undertake funded projects.

PhD Entrance Syllabus 2024

Duration of the programme.

• The minimum duration for Ph.D programme is THREE years, including course work. However, extension up to SIX years period of registration beyond the above limits shall be permitted based on the recommendation of the concerned Research Supervisor.

REVA University Ph. D. Entrance Test (REVA PET)

The University will conduct Entrance Test of 100 marks with 3 hours duration as under:

• The registration for PhD is through Entrance Test (REVA PET), Interview and Counseling. The Entrance Test will be 100 marks with 3 hours duration as under:
• The Entrance Test for candidates other than those who have qualified UGC-NET (including JRF) / UGC-CSIR NET (including JRF) / SLET / GATE or passed in M. Phil or candidates hold teacher fellowship, shall consist of 50% of Research Methodology and 50% of Subject Specific. The syllabus of the Research Methodology and Subject Specific components shall be framed by the respective Schools.
• For candidates who have passed M. Phil program, the syllabus for entrance test shall only be Subject Specific which shall be framed by the respective School Boards / Board of Studies and the question paper shall be for 100 marks with 3 hours duration.
• Candidates with qualified UGC-NET (including JRF/SRF) / UGC-CSIR NET (including JRF) scores are exempted from the entrance test. Such candidates are eligible for interview.
• Foreign Students with CGPA 4.8/5 and above are exempted from the entrance test. Such candidates are eligible for interview.
• For candidates from abroad satisfying 3.6, the entrance test and interview can be conducted online.
• Candidates in final year of their PG programme/B.Sc. Research Program are eligible to appear for the entrance test. However, for admission into Ph.D. programme, the conditions in section 3 are applicable.
• Based on the performance of the candidates in the entrance examination, the candidates shall be declared eligible for interview/Viva Voce. The performance levels will be decided by the doctoral committee for the said entrance examination.
• The results of the Entrance Test will be displayed on the notice board of the Research and Innovation Council / hosted on the University website / separate intimation will be sent to the candidates about the results of entrance examination and admission.
• The eligible candidates will be invited for interview/ viva-voce on the specific date and time. The candidates have to come prepared to discuss their research interest / area through presentations.

Candidates invited should attend the interview-cum-counseling along with following original documents:

• Original marks cards of prescribed qualification such as two year PUC/10+2 examination, degree and PG degree examinations along with Convocation certificates.
• Original certificate / proof for having qualified UGC-NET (including JRF) / UGC-CSIR NET (including JRF) / SLET / GATE or passed M Phil or proof of holding teacher fellowship.
• Proof of date of birth, preferably SSLC/10th examination pass certificate.
• Three copies of latest passport size photographs.
• No due certificate from the employer (in case employed).
• Candidates selected should take admission after payment of prescribed fee in full within the notified date failing which they will automatically forfeit the seat. Those candidates who are registered for PhD should have to undergo course work of One Semester of SIX months and follow necessary conditions in the “REVA University Regulations Governing the Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of Doctoral (Ph D) Degree, 2022”.

Note: International Students can write entrance test online and the exemption of test is allowed to the eligible Candidates*. The selected candidates will have to attend the coursework for One semester offline.

* CGPA above 4.8/5 & 15 years of Experience in Industry/Academia.

Interview-cum-Counseling

• Original marks cards of prescribed qualification such as two year PUC/10+2 examination, degree and PG degree examinations.

The performance in the interview / viva voce will be assessed for 50 marks. The Selection of candidates for provisional registration shall be based on the performance in the interview only provided further that such a selection depends on the availability of the guide in the subject / area of interest of the candidate.

Selection and Provisional Registration

Candidates selected should take admission after payment of prescribed fee in full within the notified date failing which they will automatically forfeit the seat.

Candidates who are not selected for a Ph.D. program have to re-apply whenever the applications are invited again and go through the Entrance Test afresh.

Course Work

Those candidates who are registered for PhD should have to undergo course work of One Semester of SIX months and follow necessary conditions in the “REVA University Regulations Governing the Minimum Standards and Procedure for Award of Doctoral (Ph.D) Degree, 2022”.

The course work comprises of five courses, viz.,

• Advanced Research Methodology
• Research and Publication Ethics
• Program Specific Course 1
• Program Specific Course 2
• Literature Review in the Thrust Area of Research

Course Work:

Course Work is an essential component of Research leading to Doctoral Degree. The provisionally registered candidates shall undergo Ph.D. Course Work of One Semester duration (16 weeks) from the date of Provisional Registration, prescribed by the University. The Scholars from abroad, who are qualified in the interview and with valid VISA, should undergo coursework in offline mode.

The coursework for candidates with UG degree shall be covered over a period of three semesters as follows:

Scheme of Instruction, Scheme of Assessment and Evaluation (for experts from industries with PG qualification other than Computer Engineering/science to pursue Ph.D. in CSA)

The suggested program specific courses for such candidates can include not limited to the following: Data Structures, Algorithm Design, Operating systems, Database Management, Object oriented Analysis and Design, performance Modeling, Calculus and Discrete Mathematics. The guide and the doctoral members shall decide the program specific courses to be taken by the scholar.

Candidates who pass the exam administered by the specific university are granted PhD in CS. However, candidates who pass the NTA RET, UGC-NET, UGC-CSIR NET, SLET, CEED, SRF, and GATE exams are exempt from the entrance exam at several universities. The following is the common admission procedure for a PhD in computer science followed by various educational institutions:

Step 1: To apply for PhD admission, candidates must complete an online application.

Step 2: Candidates must upload all required documentation online.

Step 3: After completing the form, candidates must pay the application fee. 

Step 4: Candidates should keep up to date on the entrance exam, syllabus, counselling dates, and admit card. Candidates who meet the requirements will receive admit cards with important information such as the exam date, time, and location. 

Step 5: When the entrance exam results are released, the college or university will issue a list based on the cutoff and available seats, as well as personal interview details. 

Step 6: If a candidate is chosen for the personal interview, he or she must immediately pay the course fee and attend the college-hosted orientation and counselling to receive further information.

The majority of universities and colleges hold entrance exams, and admission to PhD  in computer science is granted to those who pass the exam. However, there is an exception where candidates are granted direct admission to PhD Computer Science course without an entrance exam. Direct admission to IIT Ropar PhD course is available to applicants who meet the following requirements:

• PhD admission requires a Master's degree or an MPhil with an aggregate of at least 55% from any recognised university in the country or a foreign university. 
• The candidate must be a BTech/BE final-year student at the Technical Institute with Central Funding.  

To apply for PhD Computer Science or research course, applicants must complete the following steps:

Step 1: Go to the official website of the college or university, review all of the information about the PhD Computer Science course it offers, and select the field of study you want to pursue.

Step 2: Candidates must keep a look out for any admission updates or visit the university's official website to complete their application for admission to the course of their choice.

Step 3: Candidates must then complete and submit their PhD Computer Science application forms in accordance with the educational institution's timeline. Applicants must also submit all required paperwork and the application fee on time in order to be considered for PhD admission.

Step 4: Some colleges and universities may require a research proposal in addition to the application form. The application is submitted to the educational institution's research unit, which reviews it along with the research proposal.

Step 5: Following the review of the PhD Computer Science application, the majority of colleges and universities shortlist the names of candidates who must appear for the entrance exam and other admissions processes that are held to select applicants for admission to the PhD course they offer.

Step 6: Candidates are assigned supervisors or guides for their PhD research after being admitted to a PhD Computer Science course based on their performance in the admission rounds.

Entrance Examination: Ph.D. entrance examination shall consist of 50 objective type questions to be solved in 02 hours. The approximate distribution of questions will be as given below:

Selection based on Interview:

• Minimum marks to be obtained in the interview for admission in the Ph. D. program UR category: 55% SC/ST/OBC/EWS category candidates: 50%
• Candidates may submit a research proposal (optional) to express their area of interest (if any).
• Interview in Elementary Mathematics and the following core Computer Science areas: Group I: Programming, Data Structures, and Algorithms. Group II: Computer System Architecture, Operating Systems, and Computer Networks.
• Research Proposal (if any)

Candidates with SCI/SCIE publication(s) as first or corresponding author shall be exempt from Round-I.

The Round-II interview will be of 100 marks. The weightage will be 90% for interview in subjects from Group I and 10% for research proposal (if any), else weightage will be 100% for interview in subjects from Group I.

Interaction with supervisors, for the sake of assigning supervisors before the final shortlisting, will be the third step in the admission process. This step may span about a week to give sufficient time to the candidates and the supervisors to make the selection.

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign offers advanced coursework in cloud computing and scientific visualization, while Texas Tech University has advanced coursework in multivariate analysis and project management. Admissions information

While admissions requirements can vary by school, graduate degree programs require the following of aspiring data scientists :

• Successful completion of a bachelor’s degree, as demonstrated by an official transcript from a college or university
• If you don’t have an undergraduate degree in a data-related field (like computer science), you may need to demonstrate that you have sufficient work and educational experience in fundamental concepts on your résumé
• You may also use your personal statement or essay to highlight your unique characteristics and goal for the program
• Letters of recommendation from supervisors, professors or alumni of the program
• Many top-ranked data science programs no longer require you to submit GMAT or GRE scores, though you may need to if you don’t meet minimum undergraduate GPA requirements
• Some master’s degree programs in data science, like the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, may require applicants to complete a data proficiency exam

GMAT, GRE & GPA

A majority of online master’s degree programs in data science have waived GRE or GMAT score requirements and, in fact, only two schools on Fortune’s ranking still require applicants to submit scores as part of that application process. That said, you may submit this information particularly if you want to provide additional supporting information that’s helpful in the admissions process. Moreover, GPA requirements also vary by school and may be waived with sufficient work experience.

Which factors drive acceptance?

While admissions officers strive to take a holistic approach when evaluating candidates, they will be particularly interested in your educational background and work experience in a data-related field. Applicants to some data science programs, like the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Connecticut , must show they’ve completed particular quantitative college-level coursework, while other programs like Syracuse University place a greater emphasis on the personal essay and what applicants emphasize they’re looking for in the program, why they chose it, and what their goals are.

The online master’s in data science experience: What is it like to study online?

Online learning has been growing in popularity in recent years, and students considering a master’s degree program in data science can often choose between an in-person or online option within the same school. Data science programs may offer a mix of both synchronous and asynchronous learning, meaning courses that either need to be attended live at a particular time or at the student’s convenience, and could include some limited in-person elements.

Fortune’s ranking of online master’s degree programs in data science is a good starting place when comparing various programs. We emphasize selectivity (schools with top-notch faculty that attract some of the brightest students) and demand (based on the size of the student body), since the people you meet in graduate school could be transformative to your future career.

That said, prospective students should also consider how a particular program will help you achieve your goals and advance in the field of data science. Other factors that may be important include cost, a school’s prestige, its curriculum, and the years of work experience schools may require of applicants.

Start times, schedule, and program length

As data science programs have grown in popularity, schools have beefed up the number of start dates they offer. The University of Illinois and UC Berkeley, the No. 1 and No. 2 ranked programs, both offer three start dates throughout the year. Students may have some flexibility in choosing their schedule and how long it takes to complete the program of their choice, though two years is common.

As indicated, some data science programs include project-based learning opportunities that focus on the real-world application of skills taught in the program. Because these projects can be useful to show potential employers, career switchers may want to consider prioritizing schools with project-based learning opportunities—even if they could extend the program’s length.

Concentrations

As you think about your career goals post-graduation, you should also consider the concentrations offered by various data science programs. By carving out a specialty within data science, that may make you a more attractive job candidate for some employers—and it could increase your earning potential. People with the title of “data scientist” can earn up to $170,000, while manager-level professionals in the field could fetch salaries of as much as $250,000. 

The cost of a data science program is undoubtedly a factor to consider when applying to school—and tuition varies widely. Students may be able to pay one-year tuition of about $20,000 (or less) at schools like the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, Loyola University Maryland, the University of Missouri-Columbia, and CUNY School of Professional Studies. That said, the cost of tuition exceeds $50,000 at UC Berkeley, Syracuse University, and the University of Denver.

Network and access to alumni

The more students a data science program has, the larger its alumni network. This is important to consider during your selection process, not only because your cohort can be a defining characteristic of your grad school experience even if you’re attending classes online. What’s more, the network and a school’s ability to connect you with alumni may help you when looking for jobs—and particularly if you’re not already working in the field.

Years of work experience

Because many data science programs are seeking out applicants who already have relevant work experience, it may be useful to see how your experience compares. What’s more, the amount of work experience will inherently influence how advanced your fellow students are in their careers. Worcester Polytechnic Institute reports that students have an average of 8 years of work experience, while roughly half of the master’s degree students in New York University’s program enroll straight out of undergrad.

Careers for master’s in data science graduates

There’s a hot job market for data scientists thanks to robust demand—and that means many graduates of master’s degree programs are fielding multiple, six-digit salary offers. Big tech companies are a likely career path for many data scientists. A survey of more than 11,000 data scientists found that the companies with the largest teams of data scientists are Microsoft, Facebook, and IBM. And Apple, for example, pays as much as $182,000 for data scientists.

Financing and scholarships

If your goal of obtaining a master’s degree in data science is to advance within your current company, then your employer may help pay for the cost of the program. New York University grants tuition scholarships to some master’s degree students, while UC Berkeley offers several fellowships of varying amounts. 

You may also want to seek out a growing number of scholarship or fellowship opportunities from private organizations. Some examples that are available to master’s degree students include:

• The Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) awards computational and data science fellowships to diverse candidates with a $15,000 annual stipend. 
• Acxiom awards $5,000 scholarships to U.S.-based students from diverse backgrounds who are enrolled full-time in various programs that include data science.
• Although it doesn’t specify the amount, the American Statistical Association (ASA) offers a pride scholarship to students enrolled in a data science graduate program and identify as LGBTQ+ or an ally.

Finally, current members of the military or veterans may want to consider covering the cost of your data science program with Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits or the Yellow Ribbon Program , which can cover any tuition and fees not covered by those benefits.

Through 2026, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects data science jobs will grow by 28% per year . Even before graduation, some data science students in master’s degree programs are fielding offers of $125,000 and up .

As with any career, pay prospects can vary by company and role. Data scientists made a median salary of $164,500 in 2020, according to a 2021 survey of engineering professionals by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

The median base salary for data scientists is $120,000, according to figures from Glassdoor, though the likely range for positions goes as high as $294,000. Some tech companies are even paying in excess of $300,000 for senior-level data scientist roles.

The sky’s the limit for job opportunities for data scientists, including careers in tech, entertainment, pharmaceuticals, telecom, sports, consulting, or even as a company executive who understands data. What’s more, new job titles are likely to be created, particularly related to ethical concerns with sensitive data and as companies look for new ways to utilize their massive data sets and emerging technologies such as cloud computing, A.I., and machine learning.

In 2012, Harvard Business Review called the role of a data scientist “ the sexiest job of the 21st century .” Ten years later, data science remains a good career field for many people thanks to the wide range of jobs available now and in the future, along with robust demand and six-figure salary prospects.

MSEE Program Overview

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering offers graduate study leading to a Master of Science degree in Electrical Engineering (MSEE). The areas of study are Communication Systems, Digital Signal Processing, Electromagnetic Systems, VLSI Systems, Computer Networks, Energy Systems and Control, and Embedded Systems.

The MSEE program comprises of several coursework and a culminating experience which can either be a thesis (Plan A) or a project (Plan B). Each student must complete 30 units either by selecting Plan A (Thesis) or Plan B (Project). This is referred to as the student’s Program of Study or POS. Each of our courses are worth three units – therefore you are looking at completing ten courses for a MSEE degree. Eighteen of the thirty units should be 600 and 700-numbered courses. The remaining twelve units can be from 500, 600 or 700-level courses offered by the department. No more than two courses can be taken from other departments in the College of Engineering or from the College of Sciences to satisfy these requirements, with the prior approval of the Graduate Advisor. Students are required to pick an area of specialization and then choose relevant courses that help the student to gain mastery in that area (referred to as “Depth area courses”) and a few other courses that pertain to peripheral skills that can make the student well-rounded (referred to as “Breadth area courses”). The department allows the student to tailor their individual course selection (or POS) to align with their interest and their career goals, often in consultation with their Thesis/Project advisor and/or the Graduate Advisor. A minimum average GPA of 3.0 is required to successfully complete the degree.

IMPORTANT NOTE: International Students requiring an I-20 immigration document from SDSU must be enrolled in a minimum of 6 units of in-person course instruction on campus, per semester. International students may not take more than 3 units of fully online course instruction, per semester.

Thesis and Project Plans

There are two plans of studies: Plan-A (Thesis) and Plan-B (Project).

Plan A: Thesis Option

Students opting for Plan A must complete 21 units of course work (7 courses), 6 units of EE 797 "Research" (typically as two 3-unit EE 797 “Research”, taken in two different semesters) and 3 units of EE 799A "Thesis" under supervision of a full-time ECE faculty. The remaining twenty-one units can be taken from the course guidelines document , all subject to the approval of the Thesis Advisor and Graduate Advisor.

Credit for EE 799A will be given only after completing the thesis. Credit cannot be given for EE 798 for students in Plan A. An oral defense of the thesis is required in front of a committee of three faculty members one of whom will be your Thesis Advisor, another from your department and the third member from any department other than your own. In addition, a completed thesis report in a required format needs to be submitted to the university. Once your thesis has been published, credit will be given for EE 799A. Please note, that the University requires you to complete several formalities as you approach your graduation – please stay abreast with the procedures and monitor your progress on your digital webportal.

Plan B: Project Option

Students opting for Plan B or the Project option are required to pick an area of specialization and complete a minimum of 18 units of “Depth Area Courses” and 3 units of EE 798 as the project. Courses can be chosen from the following course guidelines document . Students are allowed to enroll in the project course (EE 798) after the completion of 21 units but must do so in the semester immediately after completing 27 units. EE 797 cannot be used for students in Plan B.

An oral defense of the project is required in front of a committee of two faculty members one of whom will be your Project Advisor and another faculty member from your department. In addition, a project report in a required format needs to be submitted to the department. Once your project has been defended, credit will be given for 798. Program of Study (POS) Plan

Each student should prepare a Program of Study (POS). The POS allows you to plan your graduate coursework ahead of time and gives you clarity on your road ahead. Therefore, it is in your best interest to prepare the POS as soon as possible but no later than the end of your second semester. You will also find the relevant POS forms under the Thesis/Project Procedures tab on our website. Be sure to stay on top-of-your-game throughout your graduate program.
