Entertainment is a mode to unleash all our suppressed passions and desires and enjoy a short moment of life with fun and happiness. For that visiting parks, places of heritage, zoos, museums, or having a simple picnic can be those several ways to enjoy our vacations and pass times. For me visiting a water park is great bliss.

Recently I and my friends went to a nearby water park in Kolkata that is well known for its water slides, fun, games, and also the ambience of happiness. We readily agreed to visit the park and make the day memorable. Reaching there we bought ourselves tickets and took some costumes to enjoy the water slides. We felt both excited and terrified viewing the giant rollercoaster and the ups and downs of the ride. Yet gathering all our courage we went on.

We got into it consecutively and as soon as the ride started we felt the greatest enjoyment of our lives. Each and every ride was wonderful, especially the water slip and the pool rides. In fact, the park also accommodated some really cool cocktail outlets and a platform to enjoy the music going on. The entire environment was one of mirth. After losing time in the pandemic, the water park visit became a fruitful experience get-together, as many friends came together who would have otherwise been disconnected for a while.

Taking any journey with people we love is always a rewarding experience. Whenever we find ourselves in a pensive mood, we feel desperate to attend a place of fun and excitement. Visiting a park, be it any local ground or an exclusive park with sophisticated rides and slips, strolling at parks is always a great exercise for the mind and body. It releases all our clogged emotions and makes the mind as free and wide as a huge green field. Visiting parks has often been a medicative remedy.

Many old people along with kids practice visiting to park in the morning and dusk. It enables them to maintain a healthy body and mind and feel carefree. Similarly for me visiting a park has also a great purpose. Recently I went to a famous water park in Kolkata, that is quite renowned for its water rides.

The park also has a separate underground base station for dance and music, where young people can spend their quality time. The entire park is well decorated with cartoons and animals, which in turn become viable for little kids. The park’s beauty attracts lots of visitors every summer. Also, the cocktail outlets lying adjacent to the water park add up to its beauty. 

Recently, I got a wonderful opportunity to get together with my high school friends and spent a great time with them in that water park, I hardly could have denied such an option and readily agreed. It was also a moment of nostalgia since these friends live far away without that old bonding. We arrived as one of our friends has already got our tickets. We opted for the rollercoaster ride, although it rose great fear and excitement in us. It was as majestic as it was fearful.

Once into it, we realized how beautiful the company was. We were thrilled with joy and enjoyed all the water rides with extreme fun. The summer heat no longer felt tormenting us as the mirth filled the air. After completing the rides we changed our dresses and quickly visited the dance p[platform. We enjoyed each other’s company and forgot the passage of time. Happiness, like bubbles, brewed up till we returned back and parted our ways. 

Visiting a water park that day was not any show of our sophisticated taste. But it was god’s grace that all our long-lost friends got reunited. Those lost memories were once again relived and cherished as if it was anew. I still can feel the happiness of that day and will never forget this wonderful memory.

Everyone needs to take a break from the crazy pace of NYC lifestyle, once in a while. When I ask myself where the best place to do that is, I do not have to think for more than a second. My favorite spot in the NYC is Van Cortlandt Park , with its long paved trails that I so much like to ride on my bike, passing jungles of trees and bushes so wild that they make you believe you have escaped the city completely and are somewhere in the middle of a real rich forest. I love its ample, spacious green valleys that remind me of those gorgeous Scottish hills you can sometimes see in movies, with white, puffy dots of sheep, and lonely, chunky trees. I adore the impetuous, dashing stream of the Tibbets Brook, and the contrasting calm and breathless pacifying waters of the Van Cortlandt lake.

Last week, I made my annual escape to the park. I was alone, did not take my bike this time, only my camera and my five senses, which was all I needed to enjoy a day away from work, buzz, and crowds. I first went to the Parade Ground, watched as a couple of cricket players run back and forth in their crisp, white mantles that sparkled in the sun. The players were like those sheep in the Scottish hills, only whiter and much faster. Not wanting to get burned in the bright morning sun rays, I quickly moved on to reach my destination—the meadow grass plot in the middle of the oak forest. I had spotted at this location before, and promised myself to go there again.

As I moved through the dense forest of the park, I pushed away the ample fluffy branches that came my way, trying not to hurt any of the big flat leaves, or neat, perfect acorns that covered each branch. Wanting to be closer to nature, I decided not to take the pathway but, instead, go directly through the forest. It was as if there was no sign of civilization around me. The oak trees were my favorite, with their wide, strong, mossy trunks and tender, roundish leaves. The air was still wet from the early morning shower—while everywhere, in the open, it had already been dry and hot, as if there had not been no shower. The shadows of the forest still preserved the humidity, intensified by the smell of wet moss and last year’s leaves that still laid on the ground. I loved this deep moist air, saturated with oxygen and filled with freshness.

As I was moving through the forest, a couple of times I came across little glades with no trees. They were intensely lit by the rays of the summer sun, like small islands of happiness, not enough to make me too hot from the fullness of sunlight, but enough to bathe my face and arms in their warmth. And when it got too hot, I could again dive into the pool of fresh, moist greens of the forest to appreciate the shadows of the generous old oaks. I stopped a few times, took my camera out, and captured the play of the light and shadow, spellbound by nature’s simple beauty that we tend not to notice, looking for chic and glam instead.

A half an hour later, I was at my destination point. The valley lay right in the middle of the park, between the forest and the lake, thoughtfully muffled by nature, protected from the inner noises and fuss. There were a couple of people already sitting on the grass, picnicking, reading, laying down dreaming. Even though I was not alone on the meadow this time, I appreciated this fact: I could observe the people merge and coalesce with nature in this somewhat Utopian picture of a perfect idyll.

Since the establishment of the idea of public parks by Frederick Law Olmsted over 100 years ago, the role of parks in modern cities becomes more and more significant. Planned by Olmsted as common green spaces accessible to all citizens, parks are now regarded as the reflection of the modernization that great and smaller cities undergo. The ever-increasing mobility of people sets the highest demands to the outside world. Therefore, nowadays, the role of parks does not restrict to recreation only, but to the factor of the city’s livability as a whole.

The complex of reasons that justifies the importance of parks in the modern cities may be presented in the following way:

• Parks provide environmental and ecological services;
• Parks are beneficial for human moral condition, enriching human life with meanings and emotions;
• Parks provide people with places for physical, cultural and social activities;
• Parks introduce some elements of the country into rapidly developing life of large cities, thus, the link between small towns and large cities is never lost;
• Parks make modern cities more lively and relaxing;
• Parks preserve the natural beauty in the large cities.

Increasing empirical evidence enables us to join the above-mentioned advantages of parks in modern cities with one statement. Parks contribute significantly to the quality of life being at the same time the indicator of this quality.

Realizing the importance of parks for modern cities and enjoying their beauty one should be aware of the basis for park culture that was founded by the godfather of American parks, namely, F. L. Olmstead. New York City’s Central Park serves as an example of landscape architecture for many countries.

Not only were numerous parks created across the country by this American landscape architect, but entire systems of parks which up to the modern days impress their visitors. The park systems designed for Buffalo, New York, and for Milwaukee, Wisconsin are ones among dozens of others. The most important feature of these parks is a wide range of active recreation opportunities that they provide: passive greenspace, playgrounds, immediate environment, sitting areas, playgrounds, bathrooms, drinking fountains, pathways, and sidewalks. They are common for most New York’s parks.

France is also rich with parks which play an important role in the life of the country. Especially it is true with the capital of France. It so happened that the central sections of Paris were not built for recreational purposes. At the early stage of its development Paris had a low ratio of green space per inhabitant. Nowadays the city is proud of its recreation places. The Bois de Boulogne, the Luxembourg Gardens, the Buttes Chaumont and Montsouris, the Toiletries are outstanding examples of French landscape architecture. Starting from 1852 Paris was radically transformed by Emperor Napoleon III which also resulted in the appearance of new parks at Boulogne and Vincennes.

Cardiff, one of the greenest cities in the UK, also serves as an example of the city where parks are significant factors of the city’s being an attractive place to live and to work in. We should admit the fact that public parks amount to 10% of the city’s land area. Cardiff is usually called “City of Parks”. Three of the parks have achieved the national Green Flag status.

The parks we have discussed have developed from simple spaces with amazing landscape to the places where one can understand and relate to nature, relax, feel social and cultural exchange and gain material benefit from the occupation.

The parks correspond to the most valuable criteria in terms of life science, Earth science, history, culture and natural phenomenon. They perform all the function stated above and prove the truth that great parks are the keys to great cities. Both of them are aimed at having healthy citizens, strong economies and neighborhoods that help to achieve these purposes.

A day at the park

It was the school holiday. Sam and his family were at home, having breakfast together. Sam’s father said, “Let’s go to the park after breakfast. We haven’t been there for a long time.” Sam and his sister cheered.

Soon, they were on their way to the park. When they reached there, the park was quite crowded as many people were there for their morning walks and some were fishing in the lake nearby.

Sam’s parents took them to the playground and the two children began playing on the slide. It was fun as they hardly got a chance to play at the playground. Furthermore, they were quite lucky that there were not many children there on that day. They also went on swings and had a competition on who could swing higher. Finally, they went on the seesaw and had a whale of a time.

After all that, Sam’s father said they should take a brisk walk around the park. The air was cool and crisp. There were birds singing and the scenery was beautiful. Many people were involved in jogging and ‘taiji’ exercises.

As they walked, they also chatted. Sam’s sister was skipping merrily along the track and from time to time, she would smell the beautiful flowers. When they reached the other end of the park, they bought a few bottles of drinks from the kiosk and sat down to drink.

Soon, they were on their way back again. After they had finished their walk, Sam’s mother suggested that they go to the market to buy some groceries for the week.

The Park is a vast and beautiful place. It is a place for both kids and adults to go during their leisure time and relax.  They enjoy the time spending there.  The Park generally has trees, plants, flowers, a play area, exercise area, yoga hall, etc…  

Children Play Area includes Slide, See-saw, Swing, and merry go round and other play activities.  Slide playing gives the children a wonderful feel.  Swing makes us feel as though they are flying in the air.  The children play hide and seek, kick the ball and they run fast to catch it with the new friends here.   The Park has flowering plants, bushes, and trees also.  It is a rule that we should not pluck the flowers.  The beauty of the flowers has to be seen and admired by all.  The gardeners maintain these plants and trees, water them daily and clean the dried leaves and make the area beautiful.    Some parks have an exercise area called Gym for adults to do exercises.  Some have separate Yoga Open Hall for people to do yoga.  Most parks have a special walking track for the people who like to do a long walk without any interruptions.  Some parks have a small pond with fishes in it. 

The Park gives people fresh air to breathe, facilities to do exercises and finally take rest in Benches.  They can sit, see, and enjoy the children playing sitting on the benches.  This gives them peace of mind and relaxation.  Thus Park is a really good place for both kids and adults to enjoy, play, exercise, and relax.

In Moscow’s Newest Park, All of Russia Comes Together

MOSCOW — “The park should describe the Russian soul,” said Petr Kudryavtsev, gesturing broadly at the sloping, snow-covered landscape. “A place where you can hide and where you can also see everything around you.” On an icy December day here, trees bare and frost-glazed, it wasn’t at first apparent where you could hide in Zaryadye Park, Moscow’s first new green space in 50 years, designed by the American architects Diller Scofidio & Renfro, and one of the most ambitious and expensive architectural projects in Russia in decades.

But Mr. Kudryavtsev, a partner at Citymakers, the Moscow-based urban planning team that worked on the project with the architects, was soon proudly pointing out how the numerous buildings on the 35-acre site have been tucked under curving, plant and tree-filled slopes. Each of these, he explained, represents an aspect of Russia’s varied regional landscapes: tundra, the steppe, the wetlands, birch forests.

He led the way through birch trees and meadow grasses, past an undulating glass canopy that covers a concert hall, with views toward the Kremlin, down to a spectacular, boomerang-shape bridge that hovers, seemingly unsupported, over the Moscow River. Children shrieked excitedly and posed for photographs, while adults gazed across the river at the Kotelnicheskaya Embankment Building, one of seven Stalin-era skyscrapers.

The park, which opened in September, is framed by the Kremlin, Red Square, St. Basil’s Cathedral and the Moscow River, and unusually for Russia, it is entirely open to the city on all sides.

“The park is conceived as a way of getting lost in the middle of the city,” Elizabeth Diller of Diller Scofidio & Renfro said in a telephone interview. “Most parks in Russia are very formal; how you enter, where you walk, where the plants live, not sitting on the grass. In our scenario, we envisioned a park where anyone could walk in any direction, and people could gather.”

That the park was built at all — let alone by an American-led design team — is mildly improbable. The Zaryadye district (the name means “the place behind the rows”) was home to a large Jewish population in the 19th century, and it was partly torn down after the 1917 October Revolution. Stalin had planned a skyscraper there, but it was never built; in the early 1960s, the Soviet premier, Nikita Khrushchev, championed the construction of the 3,000-room Rossiya Hotel , which was still the largest hotel in Europe when it was demolished in 2006.

Developers began to compete for the site with designs for apartment, hotel and shopping complexes. A Norman Foster project was approved in 2007, then canceled after Sergei S. Sobyanin was appointed mayor of Moscow in 2010 and made green space a priority for the city, said Sergey Kuznetsov, Moscow’s chief architect. Over tea and thick cranberry juice in a glamorous Soviet space-travel-themed restaurant at the park — the waitresses wore navy boilersuits and saltshakers came in the shape of white-helmeted cosmonauts — Mr. Kuznetsov explained that after he was appointed to oversee urban planning in City Hall in 2011, he found that an architectural competition for the site had led to nothing.

“It didn’t have the right technical brief, and we collected about 100 ideas, but it was total rubbish,” he said bluntly.

Around the same time, Mr. Kudryavtsev, with his Citymakers partner Andrey Grinev, began advocating a purely green space, and lobbying governmental bodies. They formed a Friends of Zaryadye group , inspired by Friends of the High Line , which had successfully campaigned for the restitution of a disused elevated rail track on Manhattan’s West Side led by Diller Scofidio & Renfro .

“It’s hard to say whether our ideas reached Putin,” Mr. Kudryavtsev said, referring to President Vladimir V. Putin. But after the Russian leader was filmed in January 2012 walking on the site with the mayor, discussing the potential for a park, everything took off. A second competition, with a detailed technical brief and program, was held.

Mr. Kudryavtsev asked Ms. Diller if her office would team up with Citymakers, and the architects invited the landscape architects Hargreaves Associates to join the project.

“We were a little skeptical,” Ms. Diller said. “It was during the Snowden period, there was a coolness in relations between Russia and the United States, and honestly, no one thought we had a chance,” she said, referring to Edward J. Snowden, a former National Security Agency contractor who received temporary asylum in Russia.

The team made the shortlist of six finalists, and then it won.

There had “absolutely” been pressure to choose Russian architects, Mr. Kuznetzov said. “After we announced the winners, the mayor’s office was deluged with letters criticizing the project and calling me an enemy of Russia,” he said, adding that more than 60 percent of Moscow had been built by foreign architects.

“It’s a very Russian tradition to resist influences from abroad,” he said, but the success of the park had silenced the criticism. “It has become a standard, a new image of what can be done.”

The park cost around 14 billion rubles, he said, or roughly $283 million at the time; the ruble has since devalued.

Kirill Martynov, the political editor of the newspaper Novaya Gazeta, told the Echo of Moscow radio station that the park’s cost were hard to justify at a time when many Muscovites faced financial hardship. “People’s incomes have been falling for four years in a row, and here, just imagine, some kind of exotic lichens have been brought to Moscow,” he said, according to a report on the Radio Free Europe website .

The central principle of the design, which Charles Renfro described as “urbanity gives up to nature,” was an unusual one for Russia. “When you look at landscape in Russian fairy tales and literature, you see that nature is outside of the city and something ‘other,’ ” said Mary Margaret Jones, a senior principal at Hargreaves Associates .

Ms. Jones and her team collaborated with local horticultural experts to work out which plants would survive in Moscow’s climate. The park now has over 200 species of plants, mostly perennials and grasses, and two-dozen species of trees, which number around 1,000. Countering the grayness of Moscow with abundant green was important, Mr. Renfro said, adding that “the surreality of finding this lush park with this hill was one of the things that drew the jury to us.” (It also captivated the opening-day crowd, which reportedly damaged many plants and even stole some, according to a The Moscow Times ; the park’s press office later disputed the thefts.)

Zaryadye Park has been a huge success, visited to date by over 9.5 million people. Were the architects at all worried about effectively promoting a government often seen as problematic in its policies and approach?

“I can’t say we didn’t think about that,” Ms. Diller said. “However, national governments are failing us all, period.”

She added: “As architects, we can have an impact. Cities actually have the most opportunity to change the lives of citizens. I think one has to think beyond the regimes.”

Pickleball court plans for Lincoln Park abandoned by Seattle Parks

The space in north central Lincoln Park that was once a tennis court, then a materials storage area had been the target of plans for the installation of a pickleball court. Those plans have now changed and the temporary fencing that was in place is coming down.

The long fight about pickleball in Lincoln Park is over. In a note to people associated with the plans, Andy Sheffer with Seattle Parks said in an email communication that the fencing that has been in place since last fall will be taken down soon. 

Plans to expand the number of pickleball courts in Seattle are continuing however, just not in the middle of Lincoln Park.

Andy Sheffer Deputy Superintendent of Planning and Capital Development for Seattle Parks said,

"We are proceeding with opportunities to partner with Seattle Schools to utilize parking lots.  Unfortunately, it is not as easy as just converting parking to pickleball.  All facilities have a designated number of stalls serving the facility per permit requirements.  We are sorting thru the details but I am hopeful.  I am also hopeful that we can work with community to de-pave and naturalize the Lincoln courts thru grants and partnerships."

Sherman, together with his late brother Robert, won two Academy Awards for Walt Disney’s 1964 smash “Mary Poppins” — best score and best song, “Chim Chim Cher-ee.” They also picked up a Grammy for best movie or TV score. Robert Sherman died in London at age 86 in 2012.

The Walt Disney Co. announced that Sherman died Saturday in a Los Angeles hospital due to age-related illness. “Generations of moviegoers and theme park guests have been introduced to the world of Disney through the Sherman brothers’ magnificent and timeless songs. Even today, the duo’s work remains the quintessential lyrical voice of Walt Disney,” the company said in a remembrance posted on its website.

Their hundreds of credits as joint lyricist and composer also include the films “Winnie the Pooh,” “The Slipper and the Rose,” “Snoopy Come Home,” “Charlotte’s Web” and “The Magic of Lassie.” Their Broadway musicals included 1974’s “Over Here!” and stagings of “Mary Poppins” and “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” in the mid-2000s.

“Something good happens when we sit down together and work,” Richard Sherman told The Associated Press in a 2005 joint interview. “We’ve been doing it all our lives. Practically since college we’ve been working together.”

Their awards include 23 gold and platinum albums and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. They became the only Americans ever to win first prize at the Moscow Film Festival for “Tom Sawyer” in 1973 and were inducted into the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame in 2005.

President George W. Bush awarded them the National Medal of Arts in 2008, commended for music that “has helped bring joy to millions.”

Most of the songs the Shermans wrote — in addition to being catchy and playful — work on multiple levels for different ages, something they learned from Disney.

“He once told us, early on in our career, ‘Don’t insult the kid — don’t write down to the kid. And don’t write just for the adult.’ So we write for grandpa and the 4-year-old — and everyone in between — and all see it on a different level,” Richard Sherman said.

The Shermans began a decade-long partnership with Disney during the 1960s after having written hit pop songs like “Tall Paul” for ex-Mouseketeer Annette Funicello and “You’re Sixteen,” later recorded by Ringo Starr.

They wrote over 150 songs at Disney, including the soundtracks for such films as “The Sword and the Stone,” “The Parent Trap,” “Bedknobs and Broomsticks,” “The Jungle Book,” “The Aristocrats” and “The Tigger Movie.”

“It’s a Small World” — which accompanies visitors to Disney theme parks’ boat ride sung by animatronic dolls representing world cultures —  is believed to be the most performed composition in the world.  It was first debuted at the 1964-65 New York World’s Fair pavilion ride.

The two brothers credited their father, composer Al Sherman, with challenging them to write songs and for their love of wordsmithing. His legacy of songs includes “You Gotta Be a Football Hero,” “(What Do We Do On a) Dew-Dew-Dewy Day” and “On the Beach at Bali-Bali.” His sons went on to popularize the terms “fantasmagorical” and “supercalifragilisticexpialidocious.”

The Shermans teased songs out of each other, brainstorming titles and then trying to top each other with improvements. “Being brothers, we sort of short-cut each other,” Richard Sherman said. “We can almost look at each other and know, ‘Hey, you’re onto something, kiddo.'”

Away from the piano, the two raised families and pursued their own interests, yet still lived close to each other in Beverly Hills and continued working well into their 70s. When “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” came to Broadway in 2005, they added new lyrics and four new songs.

Richard Sherman is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, and their two children: Gregory and Victoria. He also is survived by a daughter, Lynda, from a previous marriage.

A private funeral will be held on Friday; Disney said a celebration of life service will be announced later.

Though they were estranged for a number of years, the brothers largely avoided sibling rivalry. When asked about that, Richard Sherman was philosophical, touching and jokey all at the same time — much like the trunkful of songs he wrote with his brother.

“We’re human. We have frailties and weaknesses. But we love each other very much, respect each other,” he said. “I’m happy that he’s a successful guy. That makes me a successful guy.”

Opinion | Denial about Donald Trump is deeper than ever

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump , who incited a violent insurrection in January 2021 to try and remain in office illegally after he lost the 2020 election, has been clear about what kind of president he intends to be if he returns to the White House in January 2025.

In December 2023, he declared that he would be a dictator “on Day One” of his time in office. He proposed deploying the National Guard and even the military as a deportation force in an April interview with Time magazine. Add in his recent statement at the National Rifle Association convention that he might need three terms , and a new video from his Truth Social account with multiple references to the “creation of a unified Reich” — the Nazi government was known as the Third Reich — and it seems likely that a Trump victory would usher in a new autocratic era for America.

Yet it seems that so many in America are treating this election as politics as usual. Primaries, caucuses and other events proceed, even as the Republican nominee refuses to commit to accepting lawful election results if he is not the victor. And most of the GOP still embraces the false reality that Trump won the 2020 election as well.

This surreal situation reflects both an information deficit and a disinformation surfeit. A March poll of swing-state voters revealed that most respondents were unaware of Trump’s criminal charges, dictator threats, use of fascist language (such as calling people “vermin”), and vows to pardon the “patriots” who attacked the Capitol on Jan. 6. More worryingly still, the poll excluded voters who believed Biden stole the 2020 election. Those surveyed, though they are not lost in the Trumpist alternate universe, lack the information to take the threats to our democracy seriously.

And many better-informed Americans don’t take Trump’s proclamations and actions seriously either. Instead, they accuse those who are sounding the alarm at his strongman actions and rhetoric of hyperbole and hysteria.

Certainly, Americans are prone to thinking “it can’t happen here.” Our country has lived on its reputation as a bastion of freedom and democracy, and since we have never had a national dictatorship at home (though the Jim Crow South was a regional authoritarianism), many people don’t recognize autocratic creep as it unfolds. But as Robert Kagan’s stirring essay for The Washington Post put it: “A Trump dictatorship is increasingly inevitable. We should stop pretending.”

Yet too many are still pretending. President Joe Biden’s age receives far more coverage than Trump’s declarations that if he returns to the White House he will detain and deport millions of people and allow Vladimir Putin’s Russia to “do whatever the hell they want.” Such is his affinity for Russia’s authoritarian that he’d let Moscow attack NATO member states if they pose obstacles to Putin’s imperialist ambitions — a situation that could trigger World War III.

These dire outcomes can seem unreal, a world away from our daily lives of school pickups, doctor visits, work commitments and sports competitions. Dwelling in denial is the default mode for millions who have taken our freedoms for granted and don’t want to think about how their lives would be altered by the advent of authoritarian governance in America.

Americans are not the first to live in a state of collective denial. Authoritarians have often told us what they are going to do, but people have rarely believed them, or they have felt that since they didn’t fit the profile of those the autocrat was targeting, they wouldn’t be affected. Later, when it came their turn to be harassed or persecuted, it was too late to do much about it.

When Italian Prime Minister Benito Mussolini declared dictatorship in 1925, most active anti-Fascists tried to leave Italy or went into hiding to avoid going to jail. But Ignazio Silone, an Italian Communist who took refuge in a safe house in Milan, heard a comrade say that even as the streets filled with Fascist security forces, people lined up outside the La Scala opera house, waiting to see the latest spectacle as though Mussolini’s seizure of power did not concern them.

In Germany, the Jewish linguist Victor Klemperer, who kept a diary of his life during Hitler’s rule, was not in denial, but had to stay in Nazi Germany since he could not find a university position abroad. “Don’t think about it, live one’s life, bury oneself in the most private matters!” he wrote on Sept. 20, 1938, hoping that each new round of persecution would be the last.

Even when democracy dies by coup, and the repression is heavy and immediate, some underestimate the impact and view the situation as merely temporary. After Chile’s bloody 1973 coup, former Chilean President Eduardo Frei Montalva , a conservative Christian Democrat, was sure that the new military dictatorship would restore order and then “return power to democracy.” But as dictator Augusto Pinochet tightened his grip, Frei realized his grave error and began to criticize the regime. He would die less than a decade later, with his family alleging that Frei was poisoned on Pinochet’s orders.

Tyranny “advances with the pace of a tightening screw rather than with the dash of the executioner’s blade,” wrote the Italian anti-Fascist exile G.A. Borgese in 1937. We can learn from this sad history and treat the actions and declarations of Trump with all the gravity they deserve.
