A small-budget film named Mem Famous grabbed public attention through its innovative marketing campaign. Sumanth Prabhas is the writer-director of this flick, and he also played the lead role. The movie, backed by Lahari Films and Chai Bisket Films, has hit the screens today. Let’s see how it is.

Set in the village of Bandanarsampalli, the movie is about three best friends Mai aka Mahesh (Sumanth Prabhas), Durga (Mani Aegurla), and Balakrishna (Mourya). These three good-for-nothing guys often face the wrath of the villagers for their irritating behavior. Mahesh and Balakrishna will be in a relationship with Mounika (Saarya) and Bubby (Siri Raasi), respectively. One day they decide to do something useful in their lives. They choose to start a tent house business with the intention of becoming famous in the village. But God has other plans for them. What is it? Did the three become famous in their lives? Did Mahesh and Balakrishna succeed in their love lives? The film has the answers.

Plus Points:

Sumanth Prabhas is too good as an actor, and he performed with aplomb throughout the movie. Though it is his first feature film, Sumanth got into the shoes of a village guy effortlessly. Though it was the last-minute call of the team to have Sumanth Prabhas in the lead role, it turned out to be helpful for Mem Famous.

The first half moves at a good pace, and there are some well-written scenes here. A few comedy scenes work well, and from the time hero and his gang decide to do something worthwhile in their lives, the movie becomes sensible. The first half ends with a crucial scene, and this really came out pretty well. The emotions were neatly captured here.

Though there are a lot of first-time actors, everyone did their jobs pretty well. Mani Aegurla, Mourya Chowdary, Saarya, Siri Raasi, Kiran Macha, Anji Mama, Narendra Ravi, and Shiva Nandan performed well and did justice to their roles. The climax was nicely handled. Showcasing the plight of the village through a song looked good.

Minus Points:

The biggest drawback which the team could have totally avoided is the usage of sync sound technology. Unfortunately, this has totally spoiled the viewing experience, as most of the dialogues weren’t audible. Even the scenes which were good lost impact because of the sync sound. For films that are shot outdoors, it would be better if makers don’t prefer synchronized sound recording.

The movie looked sensible in the first half when the hero and his gang commence their tent house business, but all this has been marred with some bad writing in the second half. There is also a considerable amount of lag in this second hour bogging down the impact. Scenes showcasing the protagonist and his gang’s efforts to gain a good reach for their Youtube channel looked pale. Though there was a bit of entertainment here and there, the majority of the second half was bland.

Also, the pacing becomes extremely slow in the second half, and many scenes are prolonged. The editing team should have trimmed down the movie by 10 minutes. The love track of the hero’s friend hasn’t been etched well.

Technical Aspects:

Kalyan Nayak’s music is good, and a few songs were nice to hear. His background score is also neat. The cinematography by Shyam Dupati is exemplary, and the village locations are well captured through his lens. The production values are neat. The editing should have been better. As mentioned earlier, the sync sound affected the movie significantly.

Coming to the director, Sumanth Prabhas, he did an okay job. There are some really good scenes, but on the whole, the film isn’t that great. Particularly, the second half lacked gripping moments and was dragged heavily. The movie actually could have been a very good youthful drama had there been more emphasis on the key issues mentioned. Nevertheless, the potential is visible in Sumanth Prabhas, and he would definitely go places if he could focus on the flaws.

On the whole, Mem Famous is a partly engaging youthful drama. Sumanth Prabhas and all the cast did extremely well, and there are some genuinely good moments in the film. But the second half fails to carry the momentum, and hence the film ends up being just an okay watch this week.

Mem Famous Movie Review: A youth drama that feels more like a short film

Mem famous opened in cinemas on may 26. the telugu film's story could have have been more impactuful, says our review..

Listen to Story

Mem Famous is directed by and stars 23-year-old debutant Sumanth Prabhas.

Release Date: 26 May, 2023

Set in 2017, Mem Famous is about three friends residing in the village of Bandanarsampalli. Mahesh AKA Mai (Sumanth Prabhas), Durga (Mani Aergula) and Bali (Mourya) are in their early 20s but are good-for-nothing and spend all their time idling and playing games.

The trio get into trouble frequently, with Mai constantly breaking people’s noses, and the villagers are totally ashamed of them. They hang out with Anji mama and teenager Lipstick Spoiler Lingam (Shiva Nandan) drinking and enjoying their free life.

One day, the three cross limits and are told by their families and the villagers they need to mend their ways. Their intention is to earn respect and become famous and with this in mind, they start a ‘tent house’ (the business of supplying tents, chairs, vessels, etc. for functions).

READ| Mahesh Babu lauds Mem Famous, producers call it 'fun-filled movie with 40 debutants

Sarpanch Jinka Venu (Kiran Macha), Durga’s father, Mounika (Mai’s love played by Saarya Laxman) and Babbi (Bali’s love played by Siri Raasi) all pitch in with money to help them start their tent business. The three boys start to make a respectable life for themselves when a disaster strikes. Babbi gets engaged to someone else and their tent house supplies all burn down. Mai, Durga and Bali are dejected. How do they make the Rs 2 lakhs they owe their family and friends? Can they ever earn people’s respect and become famous?

Debutant Sumanth Prabhas, who plays Mai, has written and directed this film. The 23-year-old has expertise in making YouTube videos and he has used that idea in this story as well. For being a debutant actor, he has delivered a good performance. And, so have Mani and Mourya. Being youngsters themselves, the roles are suitable for them, and they are believable as the jobless youth. Anji mama and Shiva Nandan bring in the comic factor and are quite funny. Kiran Macha and Saarya Laxman also make an impact.

As for the story itself, the first half is engaging and the build-up to the intermission is good. However, it falters somewhat badly in the second half.

The story could have been far more impactful if the hook was stronger. The way the boys ultimately make money, and the rivalry portrayed is too simplistic. The climax is a letdown, and the good work of the first half goes waste. The writing needed more work as it often felt like an extended short film.

The rural background and the characters suit what this film tries to convey. Mem Famous also gives us glimpses of village life today.

Mem Famous has good intentions and natural performances but struggles due to the second half.

2.5 stars out 5 to Mem Famous. Published By: Latha Srinivasan Published On: May 26, 2023 --- ENDS ---

Mem Famous Movie Review: An Overlong But Pleasing Drama That Needed Tighter Writing

Mem Famous Movie Review

Director: Sumanth Prabhas

Cast: Sumanth Prabhas, Mani Aegurla, Mourya Chowdary, Saarya, Narendra Ravi, Kiran Macha, Anjimama, Shiva Nandan

Watching Mem Famous in a near-empty multiplex on a Friday morning once again strongly pronounced the distinction between the experience of watching a film in a single-screen theatre and a multiplex. But shouldn’t a good film captivate you regardless of where you watch it? It’s an ambiguous argument that cannot be generalised and applied to all films. The case in the study, Mem Famous, is a film that banks heavily on and is deliberately constructed around moments that for its target audience—youth—to resonate with and celebrate. Like a singer or a stand-up performing for their audience, this film pretty much borrows its spirit and energy from the young, effervescent crowd that tends to fill up the seats of single screens for the FDFS of mass films.

In a way, the film’s writing is reverse-engineered; it’s replete with moments that are designed to make its target audience go mad (The shot of Mai walking in slow motion while a DJ song plays in the background might be a blast in a packed single screen). But what’s so special about Mem Famous ? Doesn’t every mainstream crowd-puller aim to evoke a similar, uproarious response from its audience? Yes, what separates Mem Famous from other crowd-pleasers is that it draws its entire personality from this youth vibe. It’s more committed to its ‘vibe’ than the story. That’s why watching this film in a packed single-screen theatre is likely to bestow an enhanced viewing experience.

A still from Mem Famous

Moving on from the experience surrounding the film, Mem Famous is to aimless 20-something-year-olds what Majili (2019) was to heartbroken middle-class, young men. It’s a fantasy. I don’t use the term to ridicule its good intentions, but in the process of assuring its target audience that they will succeed in their lives despite the hardships, it makes conventional and easy writing choices.

Mahesh aka Mai (Sumanth Prabhas), Durga (Mani Aegurla) and Balakrishna aka Baali (Mourya Chowdhary) are the three directionless musketeers of Bandanarsampally who spend their days goofing around, drinking, splurging, much to the disappointment of their parents and the villagers. After 30 minutes of set-up and a funny incident involving a chicken that takes a serious turn, the trio decides to fix their life. In the journey, however, they have to overcome numerous roadblocks, individually and collectively—from two childhood love stories to a loan shark and a final, macro conflict, one involving the development of their village.

A still from Mem Famous

Sumanth Prabhas makes a ‘good’ film. It’s filled with good people. Jinka Venu (Kiran Macha), the Sarpanch of the village, for instance, is the trio’s guardian angel who stands by them when the entire village reprimands them. When the boys hit rock bottom in the second half he is the only one to console them in a beautiful scene. Likewise, Mai’s uncle, Anji Mama, who remains a constant source of support to the boys, is a warm presence. Durga’s father might look at them with disdain and compare them to pigs but he goes to the extent of mortgaging his hard-earned land to support them financially when the trio decides to kickstart a business. Baali’s prospective father-in-law, despite initial resistance, gives him the approval to marry his daughter Babitha albeit on the condition that he moves to Hyderabad. Even Ramachandar, the 'bad guy' of the film, isn't treated like one in the end. You see, Mem Famous is comforting and uplifting in its mood. It keeps telling the youth that everything will fall into place in the end despite the heartbreaks.

The moment when Baali has to part ways with his best friends and move to Hyderabad is beautiful, accompanied by Kalyan Nayak’s heartfelt ‘Dosthulam’, rendered beautifully by Kaala Bhairava. A thread featuring a minor character named Mallayya, for instance, whom the trio offends twice, gets a lovely closure. This hearty film soars during such pleasing moments.

While the film, complemented by Kalyan Nayak’s score, hits the right notes on the ‘feels’ front, it falters a bit on the pacing front. That’s partly due to the structure of a film. The first half of the film is propelled by a particular motivation—to make the leads find a direction in their life. In the second half, the characters are pushed to ground zero and they have to restart from scratch. This structure itself makes the film overlong because we have to see the characters find a new motivation and work towards the goal. Again. While the YouTube video angle—capturing the reactions of villagers when they interact with modern inventions—itself is chuckle-worthy, the film and the characters take a tad long to get to the point. Also, 'going viral' is a cliched plot point and a convenient writing choice at this point. And just when you think the film might have finally found its ground, it shifts gears and takes up another conflict (one about the development of the village) for the finale. These shifts can be uneven at times and made me wonder about the film’s focus.

A still from Mem Famous

And the fact that the writing ties Mai’s uninspiring love story with his maradhalu Mounika (Saarya, whose makeup makes her character stick like a sore thumb in an otherwise natural-looking film), giving it so much prominence, is baffling. For instance, we know that Mounica harbours passionate feelings for Mai although she never expresses them verbally. Towards the end, the film dedicates itself to this ‘expression of love’, making it a big deal. Even the way the scene is staged feels amateurish. Had the film chosen to actually keep her feelings concealed from the audience, instead of revealing her intentions through dialogue in the first half, the payoff would have worked. It’s during these moments you question whether the film deserves its 150-minute runtime. However, thanks to characters like the photographer Baashi and the hilariously named Lipstick Spoiler Lingam (Shiva Nandhan), the Thumbs Up-drinking teenager who hangs around with the gang, the ‘vibe’ of the film remains intact even when nothing major is happening. Lipstick Spoiler narrating his love story is a cracker of a scene.

The 'youth vibe' is sacrosanct to Mem Famous . The fresh faces (Be it Sumanth Prabhas, Mourya Chowdary, or Mani Aegurla) and their lingo (the phrase ‘youth untadhi’ is used to describe something good) are all part of this vibe. They all lend novelty to an otherwise familiar coming-of-age tale. It’s an optimistic film that does venture into generic territories. But its worldview and characters lend Mem Famous an endearing quality that makes it hard to dismiss the film despite many of its obvious shortcomings.

Mem Famous Movie: What's Behind

Sumanth Prabhas' Mem Famous is capturing the imagination of all with attractive teasers and trailers. The film is releasing on 26 May 2023 and let us see how Mem Famous entertained movie lovers. Mem Famous OTT partner is yet to be locked and streaming will be announced at a later date.

Mem Famous Movie: Story Review

Mem Famous story is all about three youngsters who pass the time without doing anything in their village and how circumstances turned them and made the entire village proud of them. Mai aka Mahesh (Sumanth Prabhas), Bali aka Balakrishna (Mourya Chowdhary), and Durga (Mani Aegurla) who lives in Bandanarsampally village in Telangana spend time doing nothing.

Their acts in an inebriated state often land them in trouble and villagers loathe them to the core. The trio decides to mend their ways following an incident. To find out what is the incident and whether they are successful in their attempts form the rest of the story. To find out how Mounika (Saarya Lakshman), Bubby aka Babitha (Siri Raasi), Yellareddy (Muralidhar Goud), Anji Mama (Anji Mama), Bhaskar yadav (Narendra Ravi) are connected to it, watch Mem Famous on the screen.

Mem Famous (2023) Movie: Artists Review

Sumanth Prabhas who played the lead role performed well and impressed with his body language and mannerisms. Mourya Chowdhary and Mani Aegurla who played the role of his friends supported him quite well taking the scenes to new heights. Saarya Lakshman and Siri Raasi who played the lady love of Sumanth Prabhas and Mourya Chowdhary got limited scope to perform and they did full justice to their roles.

Anji Mama his the highlight in the film. He showed good emotions and expressions and his screen presence turned out to be the strong point in the narration. Anji Mama turned out to be the vital cog in taking the narration forward in the otherwise wayward film. Others like Muralidhar Goud, Narendra Ravi, etc performed according to their roles.

Mem Famous Movie: Technicians Review

Mem Famous story written by Sumanth Prabhas highlighted how a fit-for-nothing three youngsters did a turnaround in their village helping it to develop with their acts. The story is simple and predictable. Sumanth Prabhas tried to generate fun and entertain movie lovers with the dialogues in Telangana accent and the village's rustic atmosphere.

People are treated with similar stories earlier too and however, Sumanth Prabhas did a decent job for most of the first half balancing the unworthy acts of the three friends, highlighting the problems in the village, and also the romantic angle. The first half ends on a decent note with a predictable interval bang.

Many expected Sumanth Prabhas to carry on in a similar manner if not reach the next level. However, the narration, screenplay, and direction took a nose dive with the silly acts to get views and clicks for a youtube channel. This along with many repetitive scenes, turned the entire second half into a boring spectacle. Finally, the film ends in a routine manner with no real interesting elements.

Kalyan Nayak's music is just ok. His background score is in sync with the rural backdrop. Shyam Dupati's cinematography showcased the rustic village atmosphere in a realistic and natural way. The editing of Srujana Adusumilli is ok in the first half. However, in the second half, it seems she has taken it casually and dealt with it leniently and this resulted in many repetitive and unwanted scenes which ended up testing the patience of the viewers. Dialogues in Telangana accent at times are decent and overall average. Production values of Chai Bisket Films and Lahari Films are good.

Mem Famous Movie: Advantages

  • Sumanth Prabhas
  • Performances
  • Cinematography

Mem Famous Movie: Disadvantages

  • Routine Story
  • Repetitive Scenes

Mem Famous Movie: Rating Analysis

Altogether, Mem Famous is a routine comedy drama in a rural backdrop. Sumanth Prabhas who played the lead role and directed the film must be commended for his attempt. He not only shone in his performance as an actor in the lead role but got the optimum out of all the actors. He got good performances and emerged successful in generating entertainment in a few scenes. Few dialogues in Telangana accent draw applause. This helped him in coming up with a decent first half though the story is predictable and routine.

But his screenplay and direction went for a toss in the second half and he flattered to deceive. Had Sumanth Prabhas worked on the script and screenplay, he could have done wonders turning this rural comedy into out an out fun feast. Considering all these aspects, Cinejosh goes with a 2.5 Rating for Mem Famous .

Mem Famous movie review: Search for fame and relevance

Mem famous movie review: despite feeling like an extended youtube short at times, it is a heartfelt film that addresses today's social realities..

mem famous movie review and rating

Mem Famous is a coming-of-age film about a trio of friends in a small village, Banda Narsampelli. Mahi (Sumanth Prabhas), Durga (Mani Egurla), and Bali (Maurya) are upto no good, and are ever ready for scraps.. The three friends have a bad reputation in their village and their families have also given up on them. Their saviour is the village headman Jinka Venu who has helped them get out of a tough spot one too many times. However, their mischief finally gets out of hand and their families are humiliated in front of the entire village by a rich man Ram Chander, who wants to become a political power-to-be. The three finally decide to clean up their act and set up a tent house. Their girlfriends, the headman and Durga’s father help them with the funds for their new business.

However, their efforts come to nought and they are plunged into debt. Bali is forced to go and live in the city while Durga has to pay his debts or his fields will be taken away. Pushed against the wall, Mahi and Durga come up with a unique solution — to find fame on the internet, something we are all aware of given the deluge of viral content. Whether their plan backfires or pulls them out of misery forms the rest of the story.

mem famous movie review and rating

The film is limited to the small world it inhabits, making it repetitive and affecting its pace. The scenes involving setting up their business and running it lift the narrative, only to sag again. The actual theme of the film, becoming famous and using it to make money, comes into play a little later in the second half. However, the film again gets tedious with a few unimaginative scenes. The idea of introducing modern city life to older generations of the village is interesting and works well in part, but its potential is not mined properly. The film does a better job with the friends becoming rich and wanting to give back to their village; Goreti Venkanna’s famous song “Galli Chinnadi” has been used imaginatively.

All the actors have performed well in the film, including those who form the ensemble cast. Sumanth Prabhas is quite impressive but will be well advised to do away with certain affectations in his performance.

This film strictly caters to the 15-25 age group. Produced by Chai Bisket Films, who earlier made Writer Padmabhushan, the film is youthful at heart and will be appreciated by its target group. Mem Famous feels more like an extended YouTube short film at times. If you manage your expectations — the film’s tickets are also priced at Rs 99 — you may be surprised.

Even as the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) deferred the launch of the alignment connecting Andheri’s Gokhale bridge and CD Barfiwala flyover to July 4, confusion reigned supreme among citizens as vehicles started plying on the structure from Monday morning onwards before the civic body once again barricaded the structure to bar access to the flyover.

Mem famous movie review - familiar conflicts but fun.

mem famous movie review and rating

'Mem Famous', bankrolled by Anurag Reddy, Sharath Chandra, and Chandru Manoharan on Chai Bisket Films and Lahari Films, was released in theatres today.

Mai, Durga and Baali are unemployed, reckless youngsters notorious for lazing around. A teen nicknamed Lipstick Spoiler is their underage buddy. Mai is in love with his 'maradalu' Mounika, whose father hates him for obvious reasons.

After a shattering event that leaves them with no hope and mounting debts, the trio must finally pull up their socks and do something worthwhile despite their incompetence. What will they do when they are royally inept?

Performances:

Sumanth Prabhas, who also wields the megaphone, thoroughly understands his character, its sympathies and traits. The graph of his performance is in tune with his measured talent. Mani Aegurla doesn't make his character's qualities boring. Mourya Chowdary is good.

The female leads (Saarya and Siri Raasi) are effective. Saarya gets a better deal between the two by virtue of the fact that she is the main lead's GF. Muralidhar Goud plays a routine irate father once again. Anji Mama Milkuri as a single middle-aged uncle is endearing. Shiva Nandhan as the teen companion of the trio is enjoyable in the second half. The rest of them get sketchy characterizations and therefore are boring.

Technical aspects:

Shyam Dupati takes us to the everyday ambience of the village. The rural atmosphere comes through, more so in the initial phase. There are some generic moments where the cinematography doesn't do the heavy lifting, though. Editor Srujana Adusumilli shows talent in the first half, where the screenplay was written tightly (on the face of it).

Usually, we don't expect much from the songs in small movies. Kalyan Nayak's songs, nevertheless, attempt to entertain in bits and pieces. Rahul Sipligunj's rendition of 'Ayyayyo' and 'Minimum Song' sounds average, though.

The sound design by Nagarjuna Thallapalli doesn't lift the overall quality of the film. The sync sound technique delivers a mixed result.

Post-Mortem:

The characterization of the male lead Sumanth Prabhas (who is also the film's story writer, screenplay writer, dialogue writer and director) is steeped in cliches. He is combative and can be seen as needlessly belligerent. One of his friends comes with a relatively less energetic mien and he predictably has a heartbreak moment (thankfully, there is no break-up anthem from him). There is a pathos song but it is a tribute to the decades-old friendship among the three.

The first half might be entertaining to a large chunk of the audience, but it is packed with conventional ideas. This reviewer could see how the interval block would end once the sub-plot of political rivalry was introduced.

It is in the second half where 'Mem Famous' succeeds in presenting a couple of unexpected elements. People might find the second half to be lengthier, but if you are engaged by the plausibility of the creative idea the lead man comes up with to become "famous", we are on the same page. This is also a phase where Anji Mama and Lipstick Spoiler get very good scenes and arcs.

The film needed an unanticipated, curious climax. Instead, it has a YouTube-ey ending where a conflict arises and gets resolved in a span of a few minutes.

Closing Remarks:

'Mem Famous' is fun to watch despite the familiar conflicts and situations. Watch it for the vibes, not the story.

‘Mem Famous’ movie review: Sumanth Prabhas makes a promising debut in this partially engaging coming-of-age story

Newcomers led by sumanth prabhas get the carefree rural telangana vibe right in the telugu film ‘mem famous’, which shines in a few segments but falls short of being a roller coaster fun ride.

An adolescent character curiously named ‘lipstick spoiler’ Lokesh keeps harping on the importance of connecting with the youth. He knows that torn jeans are a fashion statement and that videos of charming rural love stories will pique the interest of smartphone users. The predominantly young cast and crew of the Telugu film Mem Famous , which introduces more than 40 newcomers to Telugu cinema, aims to nail this youthful vibe in the narrative. Sumanth Prabhas, debuting as actor, writer and director, narrates a coming-of-age story of three young men who go from being wastrels to finding purpose in their lives. It is a familiar story packed with old tropes, heavily relying on the lived-in depiction of the rural Telangana lifestyle to work its magic. And, Mem Famous succeeds partially.

Mem Famous (Telugu)

Cast: sumanth prabhas, mani aegurla and mourya chowdary, direction: sumanth prabhas, music: kalyan nayak, storyline: three carefree young men in rural telangana find a purpose in life but realise that growing up isn’t easy.

Mahesh or Mai (Sumanth Prabhas), Baali or Balakrishna and Durga have been friends since childhood. They while away their time and have a knack for landing themselves in embarrassing squabbles. The villagers think of them as headaches and their parents, too, have nearly given up on them. A fun-packed opening episode establishes the nature of the happy-go-lucky friends who think they can get past any sticky situation with easy banter.

The narrative is packed with endearing characters and is written with an understanding of the rural Telangana lifestyle. The names of the villagers, the true-to-reality houses, the dialect, the food and the festivals add charm to the film. Mem Famous is the latest addition to the line-up of Telugu films dipping into the Telangana milieu, after Dasara and Balagam earlier this year. The characterisation of Mai, Baali and Durga also brings back memories of the Jogipet trio from Jathi Ratnalu .

Unlike Jathi Ratnalu , Mem Famous stays put in rural Telangana for the most part. It takes an entire village to accelerate the turnaround of the three boys, with subplots of two love stories and a loan acting as a catalyst. Good Samaritans in the form of Anji mama and sarpanch Jinka Venu pitch in to help the boys. You can spot the hurdles from a mile, both in business and in romance, and the boys soon realise that growing up isn’t easy.

As hurdles pile up, the simple story feels needlessly stretched. Some portions call for patient viewing. There are sporadic segments of sparkling fun and quiet moments of introspection for the boys. Some segments feel like they belong to amateurish YouTube short films. Much later, a subplot of making videos for YouTube is also thrown in.

The affable villagers in different age groups and their easy banter salvage the tale when it loses momentum. Bringing in singer Goreti Venkanna perks up the proceedings but the finale feels both contrived and rushed.

Sumanth Prabhas does a fine job of handling multiple tasks in his first feature film; he is a talent to watch out for. He gets ample support from Mani Aegurla, Mourya Chowdary and several other actors including the dependable Muralidhar Goud. Shyam Dupati’s visuals and Kalyan Nayak’s music further accentuate the Telangana setting.

Mem Famous is a film that had potential. The slice-of-life comedy-drama would have benefited from sharper writing and editing.

Movie: Mem Famous Rating: 2/5 Banner:   Chai Bisket Films, Lahari Films Cast: Sumanth Prabhas, Mani Aegurla, Mourya Chowdary, Saarya, Siri Raasi, Kiran Macha, Anji Mama, Narendra Ravi , Muralidhar Goud, Shiva Nandan and others DOP: Shyam Dupati Editor: Srujana Adusumilli Music: Kalyan Nayak Art: Aravind Muli Producers: Anurag Reddy, Sharath Chandra, Chandru Manoharan Written and Directed by: Sumanth Prabhas Release Date: May 26, 2023

To get people's attention, small films require creative and effective promotion. "Mem Famous," which featured almost entirely newcomers, succeeded in generating a lot of buzz on social media. The Chai Bisket team is known for making a lot of noise with their promotions, and they have done an excellent job of generating publicity for this small film. Even before the film's release, superstar Mahesh Babu praised it.

Let's see if the film is worth all the hype.

Story: Three friends in a village named Bandla Narsampalli in Telangana wile away time doing nothing. They are shamed for their irresponsibility. One of their elder friends Anji Mama advises them to do something unprecedented in their village.

They begin a tent house business. However, after only a few days in business, their store is destroyed. So, one of their friends has moved to the big city. The other two mull over a number of options before settling on the idea of starting a YouTube channel called "Famous TV" and uploading videos there about daily life in their village.

Will they become famous with their attempt?

Artistes’ Performances: Sumanth Prabhas is the writer, director and lead actor of the movie. His acting is surprisingly natural, especially considering this is his first film.

A young kid who plays "Lipstick" steals the show. Another excellent find is Anji Mama. The rest are average at best. The two leading women play their respective roles neatly.

Technical Excellence: The film's technical quality is below par. The camerawork is typical of low-budget videos posted on YouTube.

Another major problem is the sync audio which was not properly corrected. The "Dosthulamu" song is the only good one on an otherwise mediocre album.

Highlights: Couple of episodes The young boy’s torn-jeans joke

Drawback: Predictable screenplay and direction Poor writing skills Low production values Giving short-film vibes

Analysis The trailer and promotional materials have given the impression that "Mem Famous" is a hilarious comedy about village life. But the film is quite different. Despite being set in a village and focusing on three friends, the film has a surprise for you: it is made more like a short film and YouTube fun video than a feature film.

Even after the movie is over, we can't get this feeling out of our heads. Because it lacks the proper structure of a movie script. The beginning, middle, and end all look the same.

Sumanth Prabhas, the actor-writer-director, delivers one or two amusing moments. That’s all, nothing more. The film depicts rural life to some extent, and provides a couple of watchable moments.

The jokes are passable. It's hilarious to see a young boy is scolded by his mother for wasting money on torn jeans, believing that the shop owner duped him by giving him old jeans. Only this episode provides a laugh out loud moment. Others are passe.

The film conveys a message: youth should be encouraged (Youth Ni Encourage Cheyyali Dhum Dhum Cheyoddu). The film employs an episode of Famous TV, a YouTube channel created by teenagers, to convey this message. The message is okay but when it comes to script coherence, it falls short.

It's difficult to believe that in the age of Instagram Reels and Tik-Tok videos, there are rural youth who don't know how to make YouTube videos. Aside from these flaws, the film is mostly superficial and lacks the quality of a feature film.

The film contains a prank video episode. Even in such a case, the director failed to deliver. The film would have looked better if they had used half the creativity they did in the trailer.

"Mem Famous" is yet another attempt to cash in on the rural drama trend. Significant drawbacks include a lack of feature film qualities and random sequences with no cohesiveness. It is a short film video that is mostly boring to watch.

Bottom line: Short Video

Mem Famous, a small film starring Sumanth Prabhas in the lead role has generated good buzz among the audience with its kind promotional stuff. Directed by Sumanth Prabhas himself, the movie has hut the screens today. Let’s see how it fares.

Story: Mahesh, aka Mahi (Sumanth Prabhas), and his group of friends always bring a bad name to the village. This leads to their parents hanging their heads in shame. The film’s basic story is about how the group became famous by overcoming hurdles and making their families and loved ones proud, forms the crucial crux.

Performances: Sumanth Prabhas has done a passable job of looking confident for a debutant. He gets through most of the proceedings with this tough guy with attitude. His screen presence is an advantage for the film.

On the flip side, there are hardly any emotional scenes, and the drama as well is done flatly without any high moments. There is a heavy influence in dialogue mannerism with subtle attitude and body language which suggest a heavy influence of a star hero.

Saarya is the heroine in the movie. However, she has a small role compared to the rest of the boys and barring a scene towards the end, it lacks any impact.

Others artists did an okayish job in their respective roles. Artists such as Mani Aegurla, Mourya Chowdary and Siri Raasi are fine with their given prominent roles.

Technicalities: The music composed by Kalyan Nayak’s fits well with the setting and the proceedings even though, on its own, they don’t have long-term appeal. The background is alright, serving the purpose of pushing the appropriate emotions.

Shyam Dupati’s visuals are neat as they capture the village locations nicely which are rustic yet appealing. The dialogues are impressive as they apt to the proceedings and enjoyable.

Srijana Adusumilli’s editing could have been better. The editing would have definitely been an advantage for the movie.

Production values for this limited budget movie are okay and so is case with production design work.

Analysis: Sumanth Prabhas not only acts as the lead but also directs the movie. It’s his debut, and he has picked a relatable subject concerning the youthful subject.

The opening block sets the tone for things to follow neatly. The injury post the cricket match and the hoodwinking followed by the fight everything looks natural yet has the ‘cinematic’ enjoyment factor all along. It’s this combination that does the trick for the movie as a whole.

The director takes time to establish the various characters but doesn’t make it too much of a drag by simultaneously providing fun at regular intervals. It arrives with the writing, which is sharp, and the actors deliver the punches.

The story kicks in midway through the first half. It is utterly predictable without any novelty. Similar stories involving aimless youth have come in the past, too and give a outdated feel. But, the director succeeds to extend in projecting the issue with writing due to which it provides the movie with its freshness in presentation.

To summarize, Mem Famous a youthful entertainer that had its heart in the right place but not that impressive with the execution part. Except for a few comedy scenes are well written but the rest the proceedings are dragged with lackluster screenplay and emotions that don’t work.

Verdict: Youthful entertainer that fails to deliver!

Despite having relatively unknown faces in the lead roles, Mem Famous has been making good noise. None other than Mahesh Babu heaped praises about the film and shared his opinion after watching the movie. All these seems to have added to the buzz surrounding the film. Let’s find out whether the buzz is real or just created.

Set in Bandanarsampally, a rural village in Telangana, Mai (Sumanth Prabhas), Bali (Mourya) and Durga (Mani) are goalless youth who pick fights for no reasons and at nights booze with his friend Anji Mama (Anji). Mai deeply loves his maradalu Mounika (Saarya Laxman) and Bali falls for his childhood sweetheart Babitha (Siri Raasi). Mai, Bali and Durga are trouble-creators in the village. When the world turns upside down, the lives of Mai, Bali and Durga are overturned and forced to stand on their own feet. The trio starts a tent house business which takes off well but hits the roadblock. This pushes their families into debt. How Mai, Bali and Durga overcome their hurdles and win their love and find their purpose forms the crux of the story

Performances

Sumanth Prabhas as the lead actor Mai carries the film on his shoulders. As a first-timer, he delivered a promising performance. He got ample support from his friends Mourya (Bali) and Mani (Durga). The trio nailed in their scenes. They effortlessly pull off the scenes of aimless and jobless youth. Saarya Laxman as Mounika is good as her expressive eyes do the talking. Siri Raasi as Babitha is easy on the eyes. Anji Mama nailed it with his show. His scenes generate a good dose of fun. His “enjoy” dialogue becomes popular in the film. Shiva Nandan is hilarious as lipstick spoiler who doesn’t turn up at school but hangs out with the famous gang. His candid video goes viral and makes him famous. Kiran Macha as Sarpanch Jinka Venu is a politician with heart in the right place. He helps the youth when in need. Narendra Ravi plays photographer Bhaskar and he plays his part well. Muralidhar Goud (of DJ Tillu fame) sticks to his usual role of heroine’s father Yella Reddy and he does justice to his character. All the actors delivered natural performances. The new cast brought a lot of freshness to the movie.

Technicalities

Writer-Director and lead actor Sumanth Prabhas juggles with different crafts and he succeeds in them. The writing and direction in the film score points. But the uneven pace of narration struggles. Kalyan’s music works for the film. He is also seen in a brief cameo. Goreti Venkanna’s song which comes in the second half wins the hearts. The film deserves better making and quality.

Comedy Scenes & Dialogues Natural Performances

Dragged Portions Predictability Too Simple Climax

Coming-of-age films have youth attention. Mem Famous, set in rural milieu of Telangana, falls into this genre. It starts off as a light-hearted film, but as the film delves deeper, the undercurrent emotion comes to the fore. The entertainment portions are handled well whereas emotional portions are big bore with cliches.

Mem Famous is about three youths who want to become famous and earn respect. The plot-line isn’t new or something extraordinary. But what makes the film different is its treatment and soul. The film’s heart is in the right place. But the portions are stretched out for the convenience. The scenes have the rawness and freshness of rural Telangana. The dialogues are hilarious and well-written. But the Telangana slang is not easy to catch up with.

The film’s story has two major conflicts – one belongs to the personal conflict of the lead actors and the second one is the water problem of Bandanarsampally. Both these conflicts converge. However, the second problem which is rather serious one gets sidelined and overlapped by the former.

The film portrays the fall, rise, fall & rise of the three youths. This journey of the protagonists holds key to the film. The pre-interval episode shows strength in the writing. While one of the lead actors Bali suffers a heartbreak, the rest three get the shocker of their life. This sets the tone for the second-half.

The second-half, however, reminds us of Vijay Deverakonda’s Pelli Choopulu and their struggle with the vlogs. Mem Famous has moments of nostalgia. Goreti Venkanna’s song towards pre-climax strikes a chord. It brings cheers and energy to the film. The songs and background score are impressive.

On the downside, Mem Famous has a rather predictable story. As the story progresses, it is quite easy to guess the next proceedings. The climax is simple and ends on expected lines. The film has its advantages and its limitations. The film’s narration struggles at times. The uneven pace of the film puts one off. Even making-wise, it doesn’t score points. It appears to be made for limited audiences. Overall, Mem Famous is a mixed bag. How it fares at the cinemas depends on the acceptance of youth audiences.

Verdict: Honest Attempt Goes Infamous!

Should a review of a “Despicable Me” movie be a thoughtful analysis or just a list of the funny stuff the Minions do in it? As much as I might believe in the value of film criticism, I kind of suspect that even the finest points of assessment would be dismantled about as fast as a Minion can says “Bello!”

Since they first emerged in the original “Despicable Me” in 2010, the Minions have marauded through movie theaters with impunity , soaking up some $4.6 billion in ticket sales and spawning a franchise that with its latest entry, “Despicable Me 4,” and counting the multiplying “Minions” spinoffs, numbers six movies and counting.

Along the way, they’ve accumulated bits of vocabulary from around the globe to add to their gibberish squeals. In “Despicable Me 4,” I heard “antipasti,” “bazooka” and something that sounded a little like the old “Goonies” line: “Hey you guys!”

So the Minions continue to evolve even if the movies don’t. Six films in and with more on the way, too much of a good thing is becoming more of a pressing question in “Despicable Me 4,” a silly and breezy installment from Illumination Entertainment that passes by with about as much to remember it as a Saturday morning cartoon.

That’s not all bad. Much of what makes the “Despicable Me” movies fun is that they avoid any sense of seriousness like the plague. They stand proudly in the Looney Tunes realm of animation, with little aim beyond loosely stitching slapstick sequences together. There’s a good chance you might cry during a Pixar movie , but if you wept during a “Despicable Me” movie, someone might call for help.

For “Despicable Me 4,” which opens in theaters July 3, the filmmakers have, as if unsure about where to go next, smashed four or five sequel plotlines together. The film starts with a school reunion — the Lycée Pas Bon School of Villainy Class of ’85 — where Gru encounters an old rival, Maxime le Mal (Will Ferrell), a French-accented cockroach-obsessed villain.

Gru is attending, though, as an agent for the Anti-Villain League. (One hopes there is somewhere an Antihero League led by Travis Bickle and Walter White.) Gru traps Maxime and arrests him, but in short order, Maxime breaks out of prison and vows revenge on Gru, sending their family — wife Lucy (Kristen Wiig), and their three adopted children, Margo (Miranda Cosgrove), Edith (Dana Gaier), and Agnes (Madison Polan) — into witness protection.

This gives the movie a few jokes about Gru, who may be a family man now but who still has the bearing of a supervillain, trying to blend in. He tries to impress their next-door neighbor, a snobbish country club member named Perry Prescott (Stephen Colbert). But there’s also a new character at home: baby Gru Jr.

That allows for some decent gags — the Minions, dressed like a race car pit team, help change dirty diapers with t-shirt gun — but overly familiar ones. Gru Jr. is crawling in the footsteps of another child born into an atypical family with a big-torso’ed, spindly-legged father: Jack-Jack of “The Incredibles 2.”

That may be why “Despicable Me 4” also quickly moves on from this narrative, shifting for a time into a heist movie. Gru is blackmailed by the Prescott daughter Poppy (Joey King) into stealing a honey badger from his old school. Meanwhile, the Minions, back at AVL headquarters, are used as guinea pigs for a new serum. Five of them are turned into the Mega Minions, a Fantastic Four-like assemblage of Minion-ized superheroes that have powers (flight, elasticity, a ray-gun eyeball) that they’re predictably useless at controlling. One boulder-shaped Minion is keen enough to swallow a bomb before it detonates but not to prevent his belch from causing just as much damage.

So, yes, it will take a lot more than a so-so sixth film to slow down the Minions. Though there’s little that distinguishes this latest, overstuffed “Despicable Me,” series veteran director Chris Renaud (with co-director Patrick Delage and writers Mike White and Ken Daurio) are in something between cruise control and autopilot on this careening, carefree sequel.

The “Despicable Me” movies have always benefitted from the somewhat judiciously meting out their Minions. Even if they very handily upstage the franchise’s main characters, they’re second-banana henchmen who patiently wait for their many cameos. In “Despicable Me 4,” one gets trapped in a vending machine and nonchalantly spends the rest of the movie there. If that’s not a show of force, what is?

“Despicable Me 4,” a Universal Pictures release, is rated PG by the Motion Picture Association for action and rude humor. Running time: 95 minutes. Two stars out of four.
