Malaria Innovation Essay Competition 2023 for African Youth ($2,500 prize)

Are you passionate about making a difference in your community and fighting against one of Africa’s most pressing public health issues, malaria? Do you have innovative ideas and fresh thinking on how to combat this disease? Then the Malaria Innovation Essay Competition 2023 is for you!

Malaria remains a pressing challenge in Africa. According to the World Health Organization, in 2021 alone, malaria killed over 600,000 people globally. The urgency to find a lasting solution to combat this disease is more critical than ever. To overcome this challenge, innovative solutions are essential, and young people have the potential to make a difference. To foster awareness and promote a better understanding of malaria innovations, the Ifakara Health Institute has joined hands with the African Leaders Malaria Alliance (ALMA) Youth Advisory Council to introduce the Malaria Innovation Essay Competition.

The aim of this competition is to inspire young people to think outside the box and come up with fresh, innovative ideas to overcome malaria which is one of Africa’s most pressing public health issues. By providing a platform for young people to showcase their innovative ideas, the competition seeks to inspire fresh thinking and catalyze the development of practical and effective solutions to combat malaria.

Competition Format

The competition will be structured in two stages:

Stage 1: Call for Essays

Participants are invited to submit an essay of no more than 2,000 words in any of the following 5 tracks/ thematic areas:

• New Technologies and Approaches : This track could focus on innovative approaches or technologies for preventing, diagnosing, or treating malaria. Submissions could include ideas for new drugs, technologies, vaccines, insecticides, or other interventions that could help to reduce the impact of malaria in Africa.
• Community-Based Solutions : This track could focus on community-led initiatives or programs that aim to prevent or treat malaria. Submissions could include ideas for outreach and education programs, community-based treatment or prevention programs, or other community-driven initiatives.
• Social Innovation : This track could focus on innovative approaches to mobilizing resources or raising awareness about malaria. Submissions could include ideas for social media campaigns, crowdfunding initiatives, or other creative approaches to engaging the public and driving action on malaria.
• Cross-Disciplinary Solutions : This track could focus on innovative approaches that bring together experts from different fields to address malaria. Submissions could include ideas for interdisciplinary research collaborations, partnerships between health professionals and community organizations, or other cross-disciplinary initiatives.
• Youth-led Solutions : This track could focus specifically on solutions that are led by young people in Africa. Submissions could include ideas for youth-led advocacy campaigns, innovative approaches to engaging young people in malaria prevention and treatment efforts, or other initiatives that empower young people to take action on malaria.

Stage 2: Presentation of Essays from the top 5 Champion Groups

• The top five participants will be invited to present their essays in a virtual competition through a pitch format. The pitch should be no more than 5 minutes and should focus on explaining the essay and its potential impact, how it addresses malaria innovations, and how youth champions can be good agents of promoting innovations in the fight against malaria.
• The top three winners will receive cash prizes of $2,500, $1,500, and $1,000 respectively.
• All finalists will receive certificates of participation and their essays will be published.

Eligibility

• Open to all young champions in Africa aged 18-35 who are passionate about malaria control and elimination.
• Participants may be required to submit proof of age and citizenship in an African country. While membership in a national malaria youth army is an added advantage, it is important to note that the challenge is open to all youth regardless of their background. Therefore, youth from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to participate, and no academic or health-related profession is required for one to take part in the competition.
• The submissions are acceptable in English, French or Portuguese languages.

Judging Criteria

The essays will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

• Quality of the essay, including clarity of thought and originality of ideas
• Relevance of the essay to the competition theme and objectives
• Potential impact of the proposed solution on malaria control and elimination in Africa
• Feasibility of the proposed solution, including its potential to be implemented in a real-world setting.
• Diversity of perspectives and representation of different African countries and regions

Empowering Our Youth: Tapping the Green Transition in the Fight Against Malaria

On the occasion of International Youth Day 2023, themed “Green Skills for Youth: Towards a Sustainable World,” the African Leaders Malaria Alliance (ALMA) joins the global community to celebrate the pivotal role African youth are playing in carving out a sustainable path towards eliminating malaria from Africa.

Today, as our planet moves towards an eco-resilient, climate-conscious trajectory, it is our youth, burgeoning with innovative ideas and energy, who are at the forefront of this shift. Equipped with green skills — an amalgamation of technical proficiency and sustainable values — they are the pillars of our future. Their potential to drive change and innovation, will mould the face of a sustainable, malaria-free Africa based on inclusive growth based on Agenda 2063’s transformative vision.

In line with these values, ALMA, in partnership with the Ifakara Health Institute, proudly unveiled the Malaria Essay Innovation Challenge, receiving insightful entries from young minds spanning 32 African nations. The caliber of essays submitted was a testament to the ingenuity and depth of understanding our youth possess about the intricate challenges and nuances surrounding malaria in the continent.

One essay that encapsulates the essence of this year’s Youth Day theme is by Kenneth Egwu, who secured the second position. His essay, titled “Waste to Net: A Community-Based Solution for Malaria,” provides an ingenious solution that synergizes community mobilization with environmental sustainability. By recycling waste to fund malaria prevention, Kenneth not only innovates in health but also contributes significantly towards a cleaner environment.

The top three illuminating essays, embodying the spirit of innovation and sustainability, are:

• Norman Jonas – “ Leveraging the Use of Integrated Mobile Health For Community-Level Malaria Control In Sub-Saharan Africa Through Community Health Workers “. Jonas, a 31-year-old medical doctor and teaching assistant in Tanzania , proposes the “Integrated Malaria digital health platform” (IMDHP), a consolidated system offering various functionalities for malaria control, easily accessible via mobile phones for community health workers (CHWs). The platform integrates mHealth applications, telemedicine, Electronic Health Records (EHR), data visualization, surveillance systems, and decision support systems.
• Kenneth Egwu – “ Waste to Net: A Community-Based Solution for Malaria “. Kenneth, a 24-year-old final year Pharmacy student at the University of Nigeria, proposes a community-based solution where villagers collect plastics and other recyclable waste, which are then sold to recycling companies. The profits are used to buy insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) for the community. The nets come with a target amount of plastics the villagers must accumulate, and the collection is monitored through a blockchain-based database. The initiative utilizes religious heads, youth volunteers, and healthcare workers to foster trust in the community. This approach tackles both health and environmental challenges, and the initiative’s progress will be monitored through a dedicated website.
• Oluwatomi Adedun – “ Paving a Way Forward? Eliminating Pediatric Malaria In Nigeria With the Aid of Surveillance Dashboards “. Adedun emphasizes the importance of surveillance systems, particularly dashboards, in monitoring and analyzing pediatric malaria in Nigeria. The 22 years-old geography student in Nigeria, an aspiring medical geographer and GIS analyst, created an analytical dashboard visualizing pediatric malaria data from various years, utilizing the ArcGIS Online Map tool. This dashboard helps in identifying patterns and predictors of pediatric malaria, such as rainfall, temperature, usage of antimalarials and ITNs by children, maternal literacy levels, urbanization, and more. This visualization aids in the effective monitoring and tackling of pediatric malaria in Nigeria.Top of Form

Our youth, with their unbounded enthusiasm and visionary ideas, are the torchbearers for a malaria-free future. Their commitment, showcased through initiatives such as the Malaria Essay Innovation Challenge, is a beacon of hope, proving that with combined efforts, we can overcome malaria while also treading an eco-conscious path,” said Joy Phumaphi, the Executive Secretary of ALMA.

Furthermore, the spirited engagement of the youth, as seen through initiatives such as the Malaria Youth Corps launched across different African nations, provides a heartening glimpse of the future. Africa’s youth are dedicated and have a great resolve that is ensuring that the fight against malaria is renewed with great vigor and far-sighted leadership and action.

Let us recall the AU Agenda 2063’s emphasis on the significance of youth in sculpting the continent’s destiny, especially in sectors like health, peace and security, nutrition and food security. This reinforces our belief in harnessing the demographic dividend and sets Africa on a solid path for sustainable development. Their fresh perspectives and innovative approaches fuel our conviction that the battle against malaria will be a victorious one, with young people at the helm.

As we celebrate this day, ALMA remains committed to nurturing these seeds of change. Call for Entries: Malaria Innovation Essay Competition 2024

The Malaria Innovation Essay Competition 2024, organized by Ifakara Health Institute and ALMA Youth Advisory Council, calls on Africa’s youth to offer innovative ideas to combat malaria. Introduction: The Malaria Challenge

According to the World Health Organization, malaria claimed the lives of over 600,000 people globally in 2024, making the quest for a solution crucial. To catalyze the development of practical and effective solutions, the competition encourages young minds to think creatively and present novel approaches to combat this disease.

Competition Format

The competition will unfold in two stages:

Stage 1: Call for Essays

Participants are encouraged to submit an essay not exceeding 2,000 words on any of the following 5 tracks: New Technologies and Approaches, Community-Based Solutions, Social Innovation, Cross-Disciplinary Solutions, and Youth-led Solutions. These themes cover a broad spectrum of areas, from technology-based interventions to community-led initiatives and cross-disciplinary collaborations.

Stage 2: Presentation of Essays from the top 5 Champion Groups

The top five participants will be invited to present their essays in a virtual pitch format, discussing their essay’s potential impact, relevance to malaria innovations, and how young champions can promote innovations in combating malaria.

Prizes and Recognition

The competition provides cash prizes of $2,500, $1,500, and $1,000 for the top three winners, respectively. Furthermore, all finalists will receive certificates of participation and have their essays published, marking their contributions to the fight against malaria.

Eligibility and Participation

The competition is open to African residents aged 18-35 who are passionate about malaria control and elimination. The submissions are acceptable in English, French, or Portuguese languages. Furthermore, while a background in a health-related profession or membership in a national malaria youth army is beneficial, it’s not a requirement to participate.

Judging Criteria

Entries will be judged on the quality and originality of the essay, its relevance to the competition theme, the potential impact of the proposed solution, its feasibility in a real-world setting, and diversity of perspectives.

 To foster awareness and promote a better understanding of malaria innovations, the Ifakara Health Institute has joined hands with the African Leaders Malaria Alliance (ALMA) Youth Advisory Council to introduce the Malaria Innovation Essay Competition. The aim of this competition is to inspire young people to think outside the box and come up with fresh, innovative ideas to overcome malaria which is one of Africa’s most pressing public health issues. By providing a platform for young people to showcase their innovative ideas, the competition seeks to inspire fresh thinking and catalyze the development of practical and effective solutions to combat malaria.

Participants are invited to submit an essay of no more than 2,000 words in any of the following 5 tracks/ thematic areas:

• New Technologies and Approaches : This track could focus on innovative approaches or technologies for preventing, diagnosing, or treating malaria. Submissions could include ideas for new drugs, technologies, vaccines, insecticides, or other interventions that could help to reduce the impact of malaria in Africa.
• Community-Based Solutions : This track could focus on community-led initiatives or programs that aim to prevent or treat malaria. Submissions could include ideas for outreach and education programs, community-based treatment or prevention programs, or other community-driven initiatives.
• Social Innovation : This track could focus on innovative approaches to mobilizing resources or raising awareness about malaria. Submissions could include ideas for social media campaigns, crowdfunding initiatives, or other creative approaches to engaging the public and driving action on malaria.
• Cross-Disciplinary Solutions : This track could focus on innovative approaches that bring together experts from different fields to address malaria. Submissions could include ideas for interdisciplinary research collaborations, partnerships between health professionals and community organizations, or other cross-disciplinary initiatives.
• Youth-led Solutions : This track could focus specifically on solutions that are led by young people in Africa. Submissions could include ideas for youth-led advocacy campaigns, innovative approaches to engaging young people in malaria prevention and treatment efforts, or other initiatives that empower young people to take action on malaria.

ALMA Malaria Innovation Essay Competition

• The top three winners will receive cash prizes of $2,500, $1,500, and $1,000 respectively.
• All finalists will receive certificates of participation and their essays will be published.
• All young African champions between the ages of 18 and 35 who are dedicated to the prevention and eradication of malaria are eligible to compete.
• Participants might be asked to provide documentation of their age and African citizenship.
• The challenge is available to all young people, regardless of their background, although membership in a national malaria youth army is a distinct advantage. Youth from various backgrounds are therefore encouraged to compete, and participation is open to anyone, regardless of academic or health-related background.

JUDGING CRITERIA

The essays will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

• Quality of the essay, including clarity of thought and originality of ideas
• Relevance of the essay to the competition theme and objectives
• Potential impact of the proposed solution on malaria control and elimination in Africa
• Feasibility of the proposed solution, including its potential to be implemented in a real-world setting.
• Diversity of perspectives and representation of different African countries and regions
• 25th April 2023(World Malaria Day): Announcement on the call for essays.
• 25th May 2023: Submission deadline
• 26th May to 16th June 2023: Evaluation and selection process.
• 25th June 2023: Top 5 finalists notified.
• 12th July 2023: Pitch competition held.
• August 12th 2023: Top 3 winners announced on International Youth Day.

The top five participants will be invited to present their essays in a virtual competition through a pitch format. Are you passionate about making a difference in your community and fighting against one of Africa's most pressing public health issues, malaria? Do you have innovative ideas and fresh thinking on how to combat this disease? Then this competition is for you!

Malaria remains a pressing challenge in Africa.  According to the World Health Organization , in 2021 alone, malaria killed over 600,000 people globally. The urgency to find a lasting solution to combat this disease is more critical than ever. To overcome this challenge, innovative solutions are essential, and young people have the potential to make a difference. To foster awareness and promote a better understanding of malaria innovations, the Ifakara Health Institute has joined hands with the African Leaders Malaria Alliance (ALMA) Youth Advisory Council to introduce the Malaria Innovation Essay Competition. The aim of this competition is to inspire young people to think outside the box and come up with fresh, innovative ideas to overcome malaria which is one of Africa's most pressing public health issues. By providing a platform for young people to showcase their innovative ideas.

COMPETITION FORMAT

The competition will be structured in two stages:

STAGE 1: CALL FOR ESSAYS

Participants are invited to submit an essay of no more than 2,000 words in any of the following 5 tracks/ thematic areas:

• New Technologies and Approaches  : This track could focus on innovative approaches or technologies for preventing, diagnosing, or treating malaria. Submissions could include ideas for new drugs, technologies, vaccines, insecticides, or other interventions that could help to reduce the impact of malaria in Africa.
• Community-Based Solutions  : This track could focus on community-led initiatives or programs that aim to prevent or treat malaria. Submissions could include ideas for outreach and education programs, community-based treatment or prevention programs, or other community-driven initiatives.

About Malaria Innovation Essay Competition 2023

The competition aims to foster innovation and creativity amongst young champions in Africa passionate about malaria control and elimination, increase awareness about novel tools and technologies to address specific malaria challenges, and encourage youth participation in the fight against the disease.

By providing a platform for young individuals to showcase their ideas and solutions, the competition hopes to inspire a new generation of leaders committed to eradicating malaria in Africa, ultimately making progress towards a malaria-free continent.

Program Details

The competition will be structured in two stages:

STAGE 1: CALL FOR ESSAYS

Participants are invited to submit an essay of no more than 2,000 words in any of the following 5 tracks/ thematic areas:

• New Technologies and Approaches : This track could focus on innovative approaches or technologies for preventing, diagnosing, or treating malaria. Submissions could include ideas for new drugs, technologies, vaccines, insecticides, or other interventions that could help to reduce the impact of malaria in Africa.
• Community-Based Solutions : This track could focus on community-led initiatives or programs that aim to prevent or treat malaria. Submissions could include ideas for outreach and education programs, community-based treatment or prevention programs, or other community-driven initiatives.
• Social Innovation : This track could focus on innovative approaches to mobilizing resources or raising awareness about malaria. Submissions could include ideas for social media campaigns, crowdfunding initiatives, or other creative approaches to engaging the public and driving action on malaria.
• Cross-Disciplinary Solutions : This track could focus on innovative approaches that bring together experts from different fields to address malaria. Submissions could include ideas for interdisciplinary research collaborations, partnerships between health professionals and community organizations, or other cross-disciplinary initiatives.
• Youth-led Solutions : This track could focus specifically on solutions that are led by young people in Africa. Submissions could include ideas for youth-led advocacy campaigns, innovative approaches to engaging young people in malaria prevention and treatment efforts, or other initiatives that empower young people to take action on malaria.

STAGE 2: PRESENTATION OF ESSAYS FROM THE TOP 5 CHAMPION GROUPS

The top five participants will be invited to present their essays in a virtual competition through a pitch format. The pitch should be no more than 5 minutes and should focus on explaining the essay and its potential impact, how it addresses malaria innovations, and how youth champions can be good agents of promoting innovations in the fight against malaria.

Language:  The submissions are acceptable in  English ,  French or Portuguese  languages.

• The top three winners will receive cash prizes of $2,500, $1,500, and $1,000 respectively.
• All finalists will receive certificates of participation and their essays will be published.

Eligibility

The competition is open to all young champions in Africa aged 18-35 who are passionate about malaria control and elimination. Participants may be required to submit proof of age and citizenship in an African country.

While membership in a national malaria youth army is an added advantage, it is important to note that the challenge is open to all youth regardless of their background. Therefore, youth from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to participate, and no academic or health-related profession is required for one to take part in the competition.

Adopting New Technologies and Approaches Towards a Malaria-Free Africa

PS: The following piece titled, “ Adopting New Technologies and Approaches Towards a Malaria-Free Africa ,” was originally written by Nelson Wachira and submitted to the Malaria Innovation Essay Competition, ALMA 2030 & Ifakara Health Institute, which was held between April 25th to May 25th, 2023 .

Malaria is a significant public health problem, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa, where it has a high incidence rate and mortality rate. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), malaria caused an estimated 229 million cases and 409,000 deaths in 2019. Most of these cases and deaths occur in sub-Saharan Africa, where the disease is endemic.

In recent years, the fight against malaria in Africa has been bolstered by innovative technologies and approaches. From genetically modified mosquitoes to new diagnostic tools and treatments, these advancements are making a significant impact on the lives of millions. For example, the use of long-lasting insecticidal nets has reduced malaria cases by over 50% in some countries. Furthermore, the development of rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) allows for quick and accurate diagnosis, enabling timely treatment and reducing the risk of severe illness and death. With these and other new technological and innovative approaches, the goal of a malaria-free Africa is becoming closer to reality.

Malaria is one of the deadliest infectious diseases, which has plagued the African continent for decades. Malaria is a preventable and treatable disease, yet it remains a significant public health challenge in Africa. The disease is caused by a parasite that is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected mosquitoes. Malaria is caused by four different species of Plasmodium parasites, with P. falciparum being the most deadly. The transmission of malaria is seasonal, with peak transmission occurring during the rainy season. Mosquitoes that carry the Plasmodium parasite are more common in rural areas where there is stagnant water, such as rice paddies, irrigation canals, and small ponds. Malaria can also be transmitted through blood transfusions, organ transplants, or shared needles.

Despite, various interventions such as insecticide-treated nets, indoor residual spraying, and antimalarial drugs, malaria continues to pose a significant burden on the African continent, by evolving and developing resistance to current treatments and prevention methods. This is therefore a wake-up call for continued innovation and adoption of new technologies to prevent, diagnose, and treat malaria.

New technologies can aid in improving the accuracy and accessibility of malaria diagnosis, enable more effective and targeted use of insecticide-treated bed nets, and provide new tools for vector control and disease surveillance. Similarly, innovative approaches to drug development and vaccine types are essential in combatting drug-resistant strains of the plasmodium parasite and reducing the burden of the disease. In this essay, I will particularly focus on innovative approaches and new technologies for malaria prevention, diagnosis, and treatment, particularly in Africa. I will explain some of these approaches, their benefits, and how they can be implemented in the fight against Malaria in the African region.

I want to first mention some stats on the epidemiology, distribution, and statistics of Malaria based on the WHO reports.

Distribution & Statistics

Malaria is prevalent in tropical and subtropical regions, with the highest burden of disease in sub-Saharan Africa. Malaria is endemic in 87 countries, with 46 of these countries located in sub-Saharan Africa. It is also a major economic burden on the African economy, with an estimated cost of $12 billion per year, affecting productivity and economic growth. The burden of malaria is not evenly distributed, with some countries experiencing higher incidence rates than others.

In 2019, the WHO reported that 94% of all malaria cases and deaths occurred in sub-Saharan Africa while in 2021, the African region was home to 95% of malaria cases and 96% of malaria deaths. More than two-thirds of deaths were among children under the age of five.

New Technologies and Innovative Approaches

New drugs are crucial in the fight against Malaria, especially in regions where the disease is endemic. Artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs) are the first-line therapy in almost all countries where malaria is endemic. Having been deployed in 2005 as an alternative to chloroquine and being considered effective for uncomplicated falciparum Malaria, ACTs became the standard treatment for malaria. Nevertheless, there is a need for new drugs that can overcome the emerging drug-resistant malaria. Several new drugs are currently in development, including KAE609 (Cipargamin), a new antimalarial drug that has shown promise in early trials. KAE609 works by inhibiting a protein in the parasite’s membrane, which prevents the parasite from taking up nutrients. If successful, KAE609 could be a significant breakthrough in the fight against malaria.

Innovative approaches to vector control are also crucial in the fight against malaria. One innovative approach is the use of genetically modified mosquitoes. Researchers can develop genetically modified mosquitoes that are non-resistant to malaria. An additional approach is to release genetically modified male mosquitoes that carry a gene that causes their offspring to die before they can transmit malaria. Another approach is the use of spatial repellents, which repel mosquitoes from a particular area. Adopting these approaches could significantly reduce transmission.

New technologies for malaria diagnosis are also crucial in the fight against the disease. Current diagnostic tools, such as rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) and microscopy, have some limitations in terms of sensitivity and specificity. This is a huge caveat in ensuring faster detection of malaria in an individual. There is a need for new diagnostic tools that can detect the disease early and accurately. One such technology is the loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay, a highly sensitive and specific diagnostic tool that can detect malaria in less than an hour. LAMP assays can be used in remote areas, where access to laboratory facilities is limited.

Vaccines are another crucial tool in the fight against malaria. The recent innovation of the malaria vaccine was a huge breakthrough in the fight against this disease. Mosquirix (RTS, S/AS01) was the only Malaria vaccine that was approved in 2021 by WHO for use, having been found to provide partial protection against Malaria. It took 30 years to develop this vaccine, It was not only the first ever Malaria vaccine but it was also the first ever vaccine for any parasitic disease. As of April 2022, the vaccine was administered to 1 million children living in areas with moderate-to-high malaria transmission levels. However, its efficacy was limited. There was a need for new vaccines that could provide long-lasting protection against the disease. Several new malaria vaccines are still in development, including the R21/Matrix-M vaccine, which had shown promising results in early trials. The R21/Matrix-M vaccine works by targeting the protein on the surface of the parasite, which triggers an immune response. The WHO is considering approving the R21 vaccine.

Nigeria and Ghana approved the R21/Matrix-M vaccine developed by the University of Oxford, becoming the first countries to approve this recent vaccine. The R21/Matrix-M vaccine proves to have more potent than Mosquirix; an earlier vaccine developed by British drug maker GlaxoSmithKline, which the WHO approved in 2021. R21 has an 80% efficacy if a booster was given to children in the required dose after a year of the initial dose. It has even exceeded the WHO’s target of 75% efficacy. On the contrary, Mosquirix was 30% effective at reducing cases of Malaria severity. Mosquirix had already been rolled out in Ghana, Kenya, and Malawi with funding from the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation (Gavi) and Vaccine Alliance. With the R21 vaccine having been approved, the challenges include financing and distributing the production of these vaccines to regions most needed and African children in need. Nevertheless, India Serum Institute says it can manufacture 200 million doses of the R21 vaccine per annum. It remains for Ghana and Nigeria to find money and place their orders to get these doses. With continued investment in malaria vaccine research and development, Africa can achieve the goal of eliminating Malaria.

Surveillance and monitoring is another technological approach that can greatly assist in the fight against malaria in Africa. Several African countries have already established national malaria surveillance systems to collect data on malaria cases and deaths, track trends in malaria transmission, and monitor the impact of malaria control interventions. Nevertheless, there are still several surveillance and innovative approaches that I think can be adopted. Here are some examples:

1. Geographic Information Systems (GIS): This can be used to map the incidence and prevalence of malaria in specific geographic regions. By tracking the spread of malaria over time, GIS can aid in identifying areas that are particularly vulnerable to malaria outbreaks, hence enabling effective intervention by public health officials.

2. Remote Sensing: This can be used to track environmental factors that influence the spread of malaria, such as rainfall and temperature. Though this approach has been applied in Ethiopia and Zambia, it is still not common in Africa. Remote sensing is a potentially effective tool in the fight against malaria. The main challenge is the high cost of satellite imagery and data processing. Nevertheless, applying remote sensing technology will aid in predicting the likelihood of malaria outbreaks and target their interventions more effectively.

3. Drones: Zipline, a company in Rwanda, has leveraged drone tech in the healthcare system. In Rwanda, drones are used to transport medical samples such as blood (for transfusion) and organs (for transplantation) to hospitals across the country. In that same way, drones can be used to collect and transport diagnostic samples and essential medical supplies, such as drugs and vaccines, to remote areas across Africa. This can improve the speed and efficiency of malaria diagnosis and treatment and reduce the burden of malaria in remote areas.

4. Wearable devices: Wearable devices, such as smartwatches and fitness trackers, can be used to collect data on individual health status (heart rate blood pressure, temperature), including malaria symptoms and treatment adherence. This idea has already been tried in Uganda and Zambia. This data can be used to monitor malaria transmission and evaluate the impact of malaria interventions.

5. Big data analytics: Big data analytics involves the use of advanced statistical and machine learning techniques to analyze large amounts of data. This approach can be used to identify patterns and trends in malaria transmission and predict outbreaks earlier. Both Kenya and Zambia launched a malaria surveillance system that uses big data analytics and provide healthcare workers with real-time updates on malaria. This approach should be upscaled across African countries.

Insecticide-treated bed nets (ITNs) are an effective innovative tool for preventing malaria. ITNs are widely used in Africa as part of malaria control programs. The nets are treated with an insecticide, pyrethroids, such as permethrin and deltamethrin that kills mosquitoes, preventing them from transmitting the Plasmodium parasite, P. falciparum . Bed nets have been shown to reduce malaria transmission by up to 90%. Currently, most bed nets are made from polyester or nylon, which can break down over time, reducing the effectiveness of the insecticide. However, researchers can develop bed nets made from polyethylene, a more durable material that can withstand repeated washing and exposure to sunlight, ensuring that the insecticide remains active for longer.

“Dual active ingredient net” (DAIN) is a new type of ITN that has been developed. It combines two different types of insecticides to target different parts of the mosquito’s nervous system. This mechanism makes the DAIN more effective against mosquitoes that might have developed resistance to one or more insecticides. This newly developed ITN has undergone early field trials in Burkina Faso and Tanzania, which have been promising. Such innovative approaches are necessary.

Bottom Line

Innovative approaches and new technologies are vital in the fight against malaria in Africa. New drugs, innovative approaches to vector control, new technologies for malaria diagnosis, and new vaccines are all essential tools in the fight against the disease. African governments and organizations working to eliminate malaria in Africa should prioritize the development and implementation of such innovative approaches and new technologies. Collaboration between researchers, governments, stakeholders, and organizations is crucial in ensuring these new approaches and technologies are accessible and affordable to the communities most affected by malaria. With innovative approaches and new technologies, we can achieve a malaria-free Africa.

Malaria remains a pressing challenge in Africa.  According to the World Health Organization , in 2021 alone, malaria killed over 600,000 people globally. The urgency to find a lasting solution to combat this disease is more critical than ever. To overcome this challenge, innovative solutions are essential, and young people have the potential to make a difference. To foster awareness and promote a better understanding of malaria innovations, the Ifakara Health Institute has joined hands with the African Leaders Malaria Alliance (ALMA) Youth Advisory Council to introduce the Malaria Innovation Essay Competition. The aim of this competition is to inspire young people to think outside the box and come up with fresh, innovative ideas to overcome malaria which is one of Africa’s most pressing public health issues. By providing a platform for young people to showcase their innovative ideas, the competition seeks to inspire fresh thinking and catalyze the development of practical and effective solutions to combat malaria.

The competition is open to all young champions in Africa aged 18-35 who are passionate about malaria control and elimination.
