What is a Library Database?

A library database  is an electronic collection of information, organized to allow users to get that information by searching in various ways.

Examples of Database information

Articles from magazines, newspapers, peer-reviewed journals and more.  More unusual information such as medical images, audio recitation of a poem, radio interview transcripts, and instruction video can be found in databases as well.

General reference information such as that found in an encyclopedia.  Both very broad topic information is available as well as very specific.

Books.  Online versions, eBooks, are the same as print versions with some enhancements at times, such as an online glossary.

Why not just use Google?

What’s the difference?

Information in a database has been tagged with all sorts of data, allowing you to search much more effectively and efficiently.  You can search by author, title, keyword, topic, publication date, type of source (magazine, newspaper, etc.) and more.

Database information has been evaluated in some way, ranging from a very rigorous peer-review publishing process to an editor of a popular magazine making a decision to publish an article.

Databases are purchased, and most of the information is not available for free on the internet. The databases are continually updated as new information is produced.

Citation information.  Databases include the information you need to properly cite your sources and create your bibliography.  Information you retrieve using Google may or may not have this information.

My professor says I can’t use the Internet.  Can I still use these databases?

Yes!  The internet is only the delivery system for the databases.  The information in the databases is not found on the free web.

Transcript | Download

EBSCO Discovery Service, or EDS, delivers relevant research results for your users through a fully customizable single-search experience and an interface designed and informed by user research. When a user types the search term into the search box, EDS recommends popular searches and publications. It then returns a modern results list with peer review indicators and detailed filters that help users find content more efficiently. With EDS, your library records are front and center in search results. Researchers will see detailed metadata for each entry, along with clear and easy-to-understand indicators showing the record's availability. Plus, libraries have the flexibility to customize how this information is displayed  to best meet their needs. EDS has the most comprehensive full-text searching capabilities of any discovery service and is the only one that prioritizes subject indexing. This allows users to access high quality research faster than other discovery services. Users can also conduct advanced searches using Guided-Style Find fields to create a more targeted search. EDS offers a Research Starter related to the search to help start a user's research journey. If there is an exact match for a publication - whether it's a book, magazine or journal - it will be shown in the placard at the top of the results list. Should the user want to search for their topic within a particular publication, they can enter the publication's name in the search box to access the Exact Match Placard. This tool has a search box of its own for searching specifically within that publication. Users can bookmark, cite, add to a project, share, and even open or download the full text of an article directly from the results list. The same options are available on the detailed record page. They can choose the citation format as well as copy the citations, export them to tools like Zotero or NoodleTools, or email them. Plus they can share to Google Drive, Google Classroom or create a link to share on other platforms. For quick access to an e-book, EDS’s new eBook Viewer lets users download an entire EBSCO eBook right from the results list. If a user only needs a few chapters, they can use the table of contents from within the viewer to navigate to and download sections of the book. For libraries with Full Text Finder, a new Publication Finder user interface offers browsing by alphabet, database and hierarchical subject, as well as a search box to quickly locate publications. CWP: What Data Can Tell Us — Fall 2024: Grey Literature

Grey Literature is not academic/scholarly piece of writing. It includes government documents, foundation reports, white papers, working papers, issue briefs, organizational (versus academic) research, and other kinds of policy reports. It can be challenging to distinguish grey literature from academic sources, and often enough scholars are authors of this grey literature, blurring the lines all the more. An important distinction between grey literature and academic publications are that the latter are peer reviewed by scholars with expertise in the field.

Searching for Grey Literature:

  • You may find references to this kind of literature in bibliographies of articles and books (e.g., citation chasing).
  • You can often find it by means of a Google search, experimenting with different key words and adding genres such as “foundation report," "issue brief," "policy report," "funding report,” “working paper,” “study,” or “white paper.”
  • Documents and Reports contains final and official documents and reports from 1946 through the present
  • Open Knowledge Repository is World Bank's official open access repository for all of its research and "knowledge products"
  • Pew Research  Center  is a "a nonpartisan fact tank that informs the public about the issues, attitudes and trends shaping the world"
  • Ford Foundation -- The Ford Foundation's mission is to, "reduce poverty and injustice, strengthen democratic values, promote international cooperation, and advance human achievement."
  • OECD iLibrary -- is OECD's Online Library for Books, Papers and Statistics and the gateway to OECD's analysis and data.
  • United Nations -- Penn Libraries subscribes to the UN iLibrary . You can also search the UN site directly.
  • Public Affairs Information Service (PAIS)   is a database that indexes and provides access to government documents, statistical directories, grey literature, research reports, conference reports, publications of international agencies.
  • HeinOnline provides access to legal periodicals, international law, treaties, court reports, historical and contemporary legislation, and more
  • Policy Commons -- a one-stop community platform for objective, fact-based research from the world's leading policy experts, nonpartisan think tanks, IGOs and NGOs.

Some social science databases will index this material and it may appear in government or organizational websites or through other means rather than formal publication. The creators of these documents may be teams or individuals, and the authors are not always listed.

Unlike academic articles, grey literature doesn't necessarily go through a vetting or peer review process. As such, when using this material, you will want to have an understanding of the organizational body sponsoring the work. Who funds them? What is their mission? Are they a lobbying or political group? What kinds of information do they publish?  Do other organizations cite them?  Who and for what reasons? Google Scholar is a great way to find out who is citing a particular publication.

BEOnline was a database of over 1,600 selected websites on many aspects of business and economics, created and maintained by the Business Section at the Library of Congress.

It began in 1996 as an experimental project of the Bibliographic Enrichment Advisory Team (BEAT) of the Cataloging Directorate of the Library of Congress to explore means of access and bibliographic control for remote Internet resources of interest to the practice or study of entrepreneurship and small business. It expanded to include selected internet resources on all aspects of business and economics that may be of interest to researchers.

In the summer of 2021, BEOnline underwent a major review to fix broken links, clean categories, and identify catalog records to remove. As a result, it created a more accurate and curated list of recommended websites.

In the fall of 2023, the BEOnline project closed as the Science & Business Reading Room website updated. Many reviewed and recommend links have since migrated to our guides such as Doing Industry Research , Doing Company Research , and the Small Business Hub .

To access an archive of BEOnline, visit the web archive page listed below. For questions, contact Ask a Librarian .
