Today, June 12, 2024, the Philippines commemorates the 126th anniversary of its independence. The theme for this year’s celebration, ‘Kalayaan. Kinabukasan. Kasaysayan.’, emphasizes the intertwined essence of freedom, future, and history in shaping the nation.

Spearheaded by the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) today’s festivities will begin at 8:00 AM at Rizal Park, Luneta, Manila, with a flag-raising ceremony led by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. at the Independence flagpole near the Jose Rizal Monument. This will be followed by a wreath-laying ceremony where the President will be joined by NHCP Chairperson Lisa Guerrero Nakpil and Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief of Staff General Romeo Brawner Jr. The AFP will also provide arrival and departure honors.

In the afternoon, the much-anticipated Parada ng Kalayaan 2024 will kick off at 3:00 PM, highlighting pivotal events that marked the Philippines’ path to independence. The parade will feature the first agencies established by the young Philippine Republic alongside their modern counterparts, celebrating the country’s journey from its revolutionary beginnings to its current state.

Simultaneous flag-raising and wreath-laying ceremonies will also take place at significant historical sites across the country, including the Dambanang Emilio Aguinaldo in Cavite, Barasoain Church Historical Landmark in Malolos City, Bulacan, and the Pinaglabanan Memorial Shrine in San Juan City, among others. These ceremonies will be mirrored in all twenty-eight NHCP museums and local government units nationwide.

From June 10-11, the Mga Pampamahalaang Programa at Serbisyo will feature over 50 government agencies and offices in 132 booths showcasing their products and services. Additionally, the Kadiwa ng Pangulo, led by the Department of Agriculture (DA) and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), will offer fresh produce, while Klinikalayaan 2024 will provide free medical, dental, and optical services.

Burnham Green Activities in front of the Quirino Grandstand will offer a variety of fun and entertaining events, including a chili-eating contest, music and dance concerts, cooking shows, obstacle courses, film showings, Kalye Kasaysayan, and Love Lokal Tiangge, a flea market featuring local products.

The Spirit of Kalayaan

The celebration of Philippine Independence Day is not just about looking back at the historical events that led to the country’s freedom from colonial rule. It is also about reflecting on the essence of kalayaan (freedom) in today’s context.

As the nation marks 126 years of independence, it is crucial to ask whether the spirit of nationalism and love for the country still burns brightly, especially among the youth.

The concept of kalayaan has evolved over the years. From the revolutionary days of fighting for sovereignty to the current struggles for social justice, economic stability, and political integrity, freedom remains a dynamic and multifaceted ideal.

Today, kalayaan encompasses the fight against corruption, the quest for equal opportunities, and the drive to preserve the environment for future generations.

However, questions arise about the current state of patriotism, particularly among the younger generation. Are Filipino youths still imbued with a strong sense of national pride? Do they understand and value the sacrifices made by their forebears for the freedom they now enjoy?

Patriotism Among Filipino Youth

In the age of globalization and digital connectivity, the younger generation’s view of nationalism can sometimes seem diluted. The influences of other cultures, the allure of opportunities abroad, and the pervasive nature of social media can all contribute to a more global rather than nationalistic identity.

Yet, many Filipino youths are rising to the challenge. They are actively participating in social and political movements, advocating for environmental sustainability, and using technology to promote Filipino culture and heritage.

Initiatives in schools and communities aimed at educating the youth about Philippine history and the importance of patriotism are also crucial in keeping the spirit of nationalism alive.

As the Philippines celebrates its 126th Independence Day, it is a time to renew the commitment to the ideals of freedom and democracy. It is an opportunity to inspire the younger generation to cherish their heritage, understand the value of their independence, and contribute positively to the nation’s future.

The celebration is a reminder that the fight for kalayaan is ongoing and that each generation has a role to play in shaping a free, just, and prosperous Philippines.

This speech was given in the Filipino language by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo during the 103rd Independence Day Celebration on June 12, 2001, at the Quirino Grandstand in Luneta.

Maraming salamat Secretary Richard Gordon.

Happy Independence Day sa inyong lahat.

Bakit Mahalaga Ang Kalayaan? (Sagot At Halimbawa)

Bakit Mahalaga Ang Kalayaan? (Sagot At Halimbawa)

MANILA, Philippines – Senator Panfilo Lacson was the guest speaker during the 119th Independence Day celebration in Kawit, Cavite, where the proclamation was made on June 12,1898.

The senator was joined by Tourism Secretary Wanda Teo in commemorating the country’s independence.

Lacson, who hails from Cavite, urged the public not to forget the sacrifices of the earlier generations, and thanked the military and the police for securing the country’s territory and safety, especially amid the clashes in Marawi City.

We may not all agree with him, the senator said, but he thinks having a president who unexpectedly rose to power and who deals with the country’s longrunning problems differently from how his predecessors did could be our chance at hope and change.

Here is the full text of his speech entitled “Kalayaan 2017: Pagbabagong Sama-samang Balikatin.”

kahalagahan ng independence day essay

Araw ng Kagitingan: A relevant date

By KIDLAT TAHIMIK, The Philippine STAR Published May 23, 2022 5:00 am

kahalagahan ng independence day essay

Consider the possibility of moving our Independence Day to April 12, 1895 — when Andres Bonifacio scribbled “ Viva La Independencia Filipinas ” at Pamitinan Cave (Montalban). That suggestion came from Ambeth Ocampo, my favorite historian (after Yoyoy Villame, siyempre !)

Ambeth takes a second (or probably third?) look at that overlooked date after President Diosdado Macapagal moved Araw ng Kalayaan to June 12, 1898 (dumping the July 4, 1946 “Independence Day” first chosen by our colonizer, USA).

Thanks to never-ending re-valuations by historians, forgotten dates get rescued from the trashbin of history. Re-contextualizing old data, debunking hand-me-down history (written by our colonizers) is why we need continually to ukay-ukay history.

Let’s look at another national holiday we celebrated recently: Araw ng Kagitingan . Yearly we celebrate April 9, marking the Fall of Bataan . Yes, let’s honor the bravery of our aging veterans — with monuments and parades, and supporting their fight for veterans’ back pay. (After all, didn’t General MacArthur brag, “Give me 10,000 Filipino soldiers and I can win any battle”?) Kadakilang walang ka-pantay.

kahalagahan ng independence day essay

Fight for whose Freedom?

But weren’t they fighting a war of our colonizers (or for the hubris of their generals)? We didn’t just inherit Yankee culture ( salamat sa Benevolent Assimilation); we also inherited the enemies they created as an emerging world power. Alliances with the US continue — SEATO, VFA, APEC — call it by any other name: TNgA ( Tuta Ng America) or more gracefully, BFFngA — damay ang Pinoy sa rambol ni big brother Rambo.

The symbolism of April 9, 1942 fails in comparison with that of April 27, 1521. It remains very much a colonial holiday. Why highlight the Fall of Bataan rather than the victorious indios bravos at Mactan? The victory over Magellan’s technological might (cannons, armor and Toledo-forged swords) was sobrang klaro !

kahalagahan ng independence day essay

Tagumpay sa Mactan! Recorded for posterity by an enemy scribe, Antonio Pigafetta, writing the diary of the voyage. He acknowledges objectively the Spanish retreat —while subjectively lamenting the tragic loss of Magellan (“Our mirror, our light, our guide”). Yes, even Ukraine’s battle of Mariupol will be recorded either as a glorious victory or butcherous bullying — depending on who hired the cameras on the battlefield.

Hasty Retreat, Hazy Details

Pigafetta’s memory failed to publish many details. Remember, his hand-written manuscripts were left behind with King Carlos I in Villadolid (who favored the chauvinistic accounts of Sebastian ElCano). Pigafetta reconstructed his memoirs in Italy — published three years later as The First Voyage Around the World. The book often betrays the compassionate and artistic curiosity of Pigafetta. Strict historians zero in on his infatuation with Magellan. For his romantic journals (aka un-academic), one can admire his subjectivity when he zooms in on the local culinary taste, native words of anatomical parts, and sympathetic insights into lifestyles of “others.”

Allow this artist, reviewing the finale at Mactan, to add “observations.” Not to rival Pigafetta’s first-person accounts, but as a hindsight framer. Five hundred years later, I would dare to include some oral traditions from the folklore of Cebuanos today: Our POV.

Pigafetta, like on-the-spot reporters in Ukraine, easily recalled quantitative details: like “49 Spaniards” wading ashore to face “1,500 angry warriors.” (Wow pare , dehado kami!) His framings also provide dramatic details: how Magellan, wounded by a poisoned arrow, ordering a retreat, valiantly stays behind as the rear guard —until the “savages” swarmed the helpless admiral.

Aiming the Camera at Cultural Details

Understandably the retreating Pigafetta was pretty vague on the details of the final mano-mano combat. Might a chronicler (less starstruck ) have recalled cultural nuances of the fight? Might he have noted the Mactan warriors, in last hand-to-hand moments, resorting to sariling-atin martial arts, pulling out their arnis sticks?

kahalagahan ng independence day essay

Might he have noticed the tsunami of combatants included women — furiously defending their lifestyle from bearded extraterrestrials? (Trivia: My Quincentennial installation in Madrid last October 2021 depicted the 1521 Mactan scenario, wherein I included Bae Bulakna, the wife of Lapulapu swinging her arnis sticks. The conjugal pair overwhelm the armored Magellan in my version. A gender-balanced victory!)

Earlier, when Magellan ordered Mactan huts burned, might Pigafetta have observed that villagers of all ages — young maidens, kids, and even senior citizens, too frail to be frontliners in the Mactan rambol — had mobilized themselves into fire brigades ( taga-igib ng tubig ) to help put out the fires? Perhaps it wasn’t just macho warriors determining history?

kahalagahan ng independence day essay

Such details could have portrayed more of a cultural victory — if the lightning-swift arnis sticks (home-grown kali arts weapons in pre-colonial Cebu) had been picked up by Pigafetta’s camera eye.

Tinimbang Ka Ngunit Kulang

Teka muna! Is this artist rewriting history? Okay, forget those what-might-have-been details (as Ambeth calls them). Anyway, most academics classify these digressions as “dilitantic history writing.” Or, gently relegate them as poetic license of an essentialist .

Palibhasa , just as the valor of the Bataan defenders is well documented, so also the Victory of Mactan is solidly recorded (although Pigafetta described the Mactanese as savages). Sobrang tapang ng freedom fighters, in both wars — all academics agree.

But let’s look at the symbolic layer: whose war was being fought? Was it our warriors fighting for our independence against colonizers? Or were soldiers fighting kapit-bisig — arm-in-arm with our colonizers, embroiled in their war?

Are we just splitting hairs? Or is it a significant POV that can tip the scales on which date to celebrate? Sariling away ba natin ? O napa-subo lang sa rambol nila ?

Surely, April 27 was our victory in our war, diba ? April 9 was their surrender — after we risked our lives fighting their war. So, why not move that national holiday to April 27?

A Wish for the Lapulapu Time Capsule

The Quincentennial fireworks commemorated the Victory at Mactan, our first recorded repulsion of foreign invaders. I had hoped President Du30 would declare April 27, 2021 as a national holiday ( hindi lang sa Cebu). Sayang . We missed a chance to canonize Lapulapu as a nationwid e bayani in the jubilee year. Pero it’s never too late.

The 501st anniversary was to be celebrated in Mactan with a time capsule laid for the Lapulapu Memorial Shrine and Museum. Expect, in 2025, a Lapulapu statue, taller than Magellan’s monument. That’s a wish Pres. Idolo-ko-si-Lapulapu Du30 expressed. Instead, a state-of-the-art bridge was unveiled.

The humble wish of this artist was simple: sana, sa loob ng time capsule, kasali isang presidential proclamation, declaring April 27 Araw ng Magiting . From an outgoing president, such a farewell salvo could have been more spectacular than all the fireworks in Ukraine. Or the Olympic pyrogenics at the Beijing Olympics, diba ?

Let me dream… Maybe in 2025, during the inauguration of the Lapulapu Shrine, baka pwede pa ang April 27, 2025 maging LapuLapu National Holiday… Sugod !

DepEd, NHCP discuss significance of Philippine independence in an online symposium

PASIG CITY, June 22, 2022 – The Department of Education (DepEd), in partnership with the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP), discussed the significance of Philippine independence during the conduct of the Virtual Symposium on the Commemoration of the 124th Anniversary of Philippine Independence on Friday.

Education Secretary Leonor Magtolis Briones commended the NHCP for working with DepEd in the virtual event that gives a full perspective of the country’s historical events that made their mark on teachers and students all over the country.

“We would like to show appreciation to the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) for the continuous partnership and collaboration in promoting awareness of commemorative events to our teachers and students, instilling nationalism and love for the country in their hearts and minds,” Briones said.

“We hope that through the conduct of a symposium like this, our teachers and learners will fully recognize the value of historical events, and appreciate our ancestors and Filipino heroes who fought hard for this country to gain its independence,” added Briones.

Spearheaded by the External Partnerships Service (EPS) and DepEd IV-A CALABARZON, the virtual symposium brings together some of the foremost historians in the country such as Dr. Ambeth Ocampo, a professor/historian from Ateneo De Manila University, and Mr. Michael Charleston “Xiao” B. Chua, also a professor/historian from De Lasalle University-Taft.

In the virtual event, the two lecturers discussed very significant topics about Philippine independence and how our teachers and the youth of today can apply lessons, and knowledge, including compassion and love for the country.

Furthermore, Dr. Rene Escalante, Chairman of the NHCP, emphasized the significance of the declaration of Philippine independence on how we move forward as a nation.

One of the highlights of the virtual symposium was the round table discussions between the speakers, the Araling Panlipunan and Edukasyon sa Pagpapakatao teachers, and the learners. In the discussion, the participants understood the value of getting accurate information regarding Philippine history and the methods that they have to follow to verify historical facts, and how to handle these sources.

Undersecretary for External Partnerships Tonisito M.C. Umali thanked everyone who participated in the virtual event and hoped that whatever they have learned will have a positive impact and appreciation of the freedom we are enjoying today.

“We hope that all of what we discussed this afternoon will lead you to further value and appreciate the hard-fought freedom that we are enjoying now and have an impact on our present situation. Mabuhay kayong lahat,” Usec. Umali said.

Araw ng Kagitingan (Day of Valor)

araw ng kagitingan images

Most veterans living today were just a teenager forced to fight in the war and fight for our freedom. If you know something, you’re lucky. Do not forget to thank these war veterans.

Araw ng Kagitingan (day of valor) commemorates the heroism of Filipino and American soldiers at the Battle of Bataan. The Bataan Peninsula and Corregidor Island were the only remaining Allied strongholds in Southeast Asia. Their relentless fighting delayed the Japanese invasion over the Pacific until the Fall of Bataan on April 9, 1942. Approximately 76,000 Allied soldiers surrendered, the largest in both American and Philippine military histories. These prisoners of war were then forced into the 140-km Death March.

Dambana ng Kagitingan was erected atop Mt. Samat to memorialize the heroic stand of Filipino and American soldiers who fought for three months at the Bataan Peninsula. The shrine stands on the site where some of the fiercest battles were fought. The Memorial Cross is a remembrance of the soldiers who fought and lost their lives in these battles to defend the Philippines.

Today, April 9, 2019, is the 77th anniversary of the fall of Bataan. About 75,000 prisoners of war, 65,000 Filipinos, and 10,000 American soldiers marched at least  65 miles from Bataan to Camp O’Donnel in Capaz, Tarlac without rest, food, or water.

On the dawn of April 9, 1942, Major General Edward P. King, commander of the Bataan forces,  was forced to surrender together with his men when the Filipino and American soldiers could no longer defend the Bataan peninsula from the invasion of Japanese troops.

The surrendered Filipino-American forces were forced at gunpoint to march under the tropical hot sun from Bataan to San Fernando, Pampanga, and then taken by rail to Camp O’Donnel in Tarlac. Those who could not make it because of physical weakness were shot or bayoneted to death .

The event was indeed so inhuman that it was called the “Death March” and marked the beginning of the total Japanese Occupation of the Philippines during the Second World War.

Despite the travails of defeat, most of the captured soldiers stood strong and heroes emerged from the event. The surrender was only temporary.

Eventually, American and Filipino liberation forces retook the Bataan peninsula on February 8, 1945.

The nation marks “Araw ng Kagitingan” (Day of Valor) on April 9 of every year to highlight the valor and heroism of the Filipino and American soldiers who fought in the Philippines during World War II.

Formerly called “Bataan Day” or “Fall of Bataan,” the celebration was changed to “Day of Valor” and made a national public holiday under Letter of Instruction No. 1087 issued on November 26, 1980, by then President Ferdinand E. Marcos.

Executive Order No. 203, dated June 30, 1987, further declared April 9 of each year as “Araw Ng Kagitingan” to pay tribute to the heroes of Bataan, Corregidor, and Bessang Pass. ( kahimyang )

April 9 is Day of Valor in the Philippines (officially known as Araw ng Kagitingan) which commemorates the Fall of Bataan to Japanese troops during World War II and the infamous Bataan Death March where thousands of Filipino and American soldiers died from being forced to march from Bataan to Pampanga and Tarlac by the Japanese. Osun State Governor, Mr Adegboyega Oyetola, on Monday, said Osun’s choice to celebrate the nation’s Independence with an essay competition for youths in secondary schools and tertiary institutions was to demonstrate his administration’s commitment to building the teeming youth population for future leadership.

According to the Chief press secretary to the governor, Mr Ismail Omipidan, Oyetola described the essay competition as a wake-up call to youths in the State to embrace intellectually engaging activities and to have a taste of good life, rather than indulging in criminal activities.

“This is as Oyetola announced the award of scholarship to Miss Adegboyega Abisola Faith up to the university level in any public institution of her choice within the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

“On the part of the government, the welfare of teachers and other categories of workers will continue to remain priority.”

Oyetola, who also commended the event’s sponsors for their show of interest in developing youths, called on other stakeholders to join hands with the government in its resolve to propel Osun to greater heights by investing in the future of the youths.

In his remarks, the Commissioner for Regional Integration and Special Duties, Lekan Badmus, expressed satisfaction with the successes recorded so far since the introduction of the future-focused and leadership-oriented essay competition.

Also speaking on behalf of the examiners, Dr Mrs Akintunde said “we are happy that this initiative is thriving at a period negative things have been happening among the youth. Osun has become a good example of good things. I must commend your support on this. It shows your deep love for educational development.”

As far as this initiative is concerned, it is clear that Osun is the pacesetter in education development. I congratulate the organisers, winners, the parents for believing in this initiative.

Our freedom fighters struggled for India’s Independence. Famous leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Subhash Chandra Bose, Bhagat Singh, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Jawaharlal Nehru, Rani Lakshmi Bai, Mangal Pandey, Dada Bhai Naoroji fought fearlessly against the Britishers. Many of them also sacrificed their lives to make India free from British rule. Their contribution and effort are remembered in India’s Independence history.
