For more than a century most psychologists have accepted that there are distinct memory systems responsible for long and short-term storage. Originally based entirely on introspection (e.g., James, 1890), the idea that there are separate long- and short-term memory (LTM and STM, respectively) systems subsequently became a core assumption of modern cognitive psychology.

The way we store information affects the way we retrieve it. There has been a significant amount of research regarding the differences between Short Term Memory (STM ) and Long Term Memory (LTM). Most adults can store between 5 and 9 items in their short-term memory. Miller (1956) put this idea forward, and he called it the magic number 7.

Long- and short-term memory could differ in two fundamental ways, with only short-term memory demonstrating (1) temporal decay and (2) chunk capacity limits. Both properties of short-term memory are still controversial but the current literature is rather encouraging regarding the existence of both decay and capacity limits.

Encoded information is first stored in short-term memory and then, if need be, is stored in long-term memory (Roediger & McDermott, 1995). Atkinson and Shiffrin argue that information that is encoded acoustically is primarily stored in short-term memory (STM), and it is only kept there through constant repetition (rehearsal).
