My Childhood Memories

Growing up, I had a very loving family. I had three siblings with whom I used to play a lot. I remember very fondly the games we use to play. Especially, in the evenings, we used to go out in the park with our sports equipment. Each day we played different games, for example, football on one day and cricket on the other. These memories of playing in the park are very dear to me.

Furthermore, I remember clearly the aroma of my grandmother’s pickles. I used to help her whenever she made pickles. We used to watch her do the magic of combining the oils and spices to make delicious pickles. Even today, I can sometimes smell her pickles whenever I look back at this memory.

Most importantly, I remember this instance very clearly when we went out for a picnic with my family. We paid a visit to the zoo and had an incredible day. My mother packed delectable dishes which we ate in the zoo. My father clicked so many pictures that day. When I look at these pictures, the memory is so clear, it seems like it happened just yesterday. Thus, my childhood memories are very dear to me and make me smile when I feel low.

For an adult the best days of his life were spent while he was a child and it is during his stressful days he longs for the lost time. This is when the significance is best realised. The moral and social character of a child is developed in this time. In this time, the parents can easily alter the mindset of the children and make them differentiate between right and wrong. The minds of children are like clean slates on which any story, pleasant or harsh, can be written easily. 

Childhood is the time when a child’s diet must be apt to develop his health and immunity. The proper habit of eating, reading, sleeping, doing exercise, and to be neat and clean must be taught in this phase of time. It is also the best time for a child to engage in any creative activity like drawing, singing, etc. or sports for these will be with him when he grows up and works as a stress buster. 

We adults also have a thing or two to learn from children. They care for every people without any discrimination. They are also very helpful in nature to the people surrounding them. We can learn the lesson of humanity from children. Children are to be treated as the future of the country and they are the biggest part of a developing nation. Thus, they must be nurtured accordingly. 

A happy childhood makes for a successful adulthood. Children are like vehicles without any proper destination. You can drive them in any direction you want. Children are the representatives of God. Childhood memories always bring smiles to our faces because of the innocence that lies within them. People feel happy when they think about and discuss these memories.

One of my strongest childhood memories is playing in the park with my best friend. We would spend hours there, running and playing on the swings and slides. The sun would beat down on us as we giggled and chased each other, and our laughter echoed in my mind even now. We would also play games of tag and hide and seek and always have fun. I remember feeling so carefree and happy in those moments, with no worry. These memories of playing in the park with my best friend bring back feelings of pure joy and innocence, and I will always treasure them as some of my fondest childhood memories.

Memory is an interesting and important part of our lives. When I look back on my childhood, I recall many stories. Some make me happy, and others help me learn and grow.

Summer At My grandparents

One of my fondest childhood memories is spending summers at my grandparents' house in the countryside. The lush green fields and tall trees surrounded the house, and I loved going on adventures with my cousins through the fields and woods. My Childhood Memory

One of my most memorable childhood memories is playing with my friends in my neighborhood. I grew up in a small village surrounded by lush green trees and rolling hills. My friends and I would spend hours exploring the woods, building forts, and playing games. We were always outside, regardless of the weather, and we never seemed to run out of things to do.

One of our favorite games captured the flag. We would divide into two teams, each with their own flag that they would hide. The game's objective was to capture the other team's flag and bring it back to your base without getting tagged. We used to steal pickles from the refrigerator that my grandma made. I still can feel the smell and taste of that pickle when I look back at the memories. My dad was a super busy person, but still, he spent enough time with us. I can remember a picnic at a zoo where the entire family went. 

My mom took some delicious food items there. I can’t remember what exactly the dishes were, but they were amazing in taste. That was an incredible day. We sometimes visited our native village and that was the best moment for me and my cousins. 

We got enough space to run, play football, and do all the stuff that we can’t do in the city. When I think about my childhood, that takes a large part there. Because I have so many amazing memories related to village life. 

My First Day at School: 

The first day at school is a beautiful memory that I can remember clearly. That was a very special event for me. I was very excited. I have been preparing for school and worked very hard for three months. My mother was also working very hard to teach me all the basic things such as alphabets and a few rhymes. 

I was pretty confident. I got my new uniform, school bag, some books, and new shoes. And the day came and they took me to school. That is quite a popular school in the city. My parents took me to the headmaster’s room. 

He was a gentleman and he greeted us properly. I can remember he asked me some basic questions and I answered them confidently. He called an assistant teacher and sent me to my classroom . A class was going on there already and I joined it. I found tons of boys and girls my age. 

I made some friends on the first day. I went back and found my parents waiting for me. That was a pleasant experience for me. I will never forget that day. My parents were very supportive and that’s why everything was easy for me.

The Best Short Stories about Children and Childhood

What are some of the best short stories about childhood, and the experiences of children? Although there are dozens of classic tales about those formative years, the following stories represent, for our money, some of the finest stories about children taking the rocky path of knowledge and experience towards adulthood.

Not all of them are about this, however: some are more straightforwardly about learning things, such as the children in Asimov’s story (below) who learn about the antiquated ways children used to be taught in schools. But other stories take on bigger and more ‘adult’ themes, including war and religion, to reflect on the passage from childhood towards adolescence.

Ambrose Bierce, ‘Chickamauga’.

‘Chickamauga’ is a war story, but is unusual in focusing on a young child who is a bystander to the carnage that unfolds. Warning: this story contains some rather graphic and harrowing imagery.

The story’s title is derived from the Battle of Chickamauga, which was fought in September 1863 between U.S. and Confederate forces in the American Civil War. Bierce was a Civil War veteran. The protagonist is a deaf-mute boy of around six years old who strays from home with a wooden sword in search of adventure, but will encounter the aftermath of a bloody battle – and horrors which he can only partially comprehend.

Saki, ‘The Lumber-Room’.

‘The Lumber-Room’, by the British author Saki (real name Hector Hugh Munro), is a classic short story about a child who is too clever for the adults. Specifically, it is about how one clever but mischievous boy, Nicholas, seeks to outwit his aunt so he can gain access to the lumber-room with its hidden treasures and curiosities.

But the story might also be viewed as an analysis of the nature of obedience and the limited adult view of the world when contrasted with the child’s more expansive and imaginative outlook. Saki was usually on the side of children and animals in his stories, rather than the hypocritical Edwardian adults.

James Joyce, ‘The Sisters’.

Rumours and gossip surround the priest as his funeral takes place, leading the narrator to wonder if there was something wrong with the priest. In one sense, the story marks the narrator’s journey from childhood to (tentative) adulthood.

Katherine Anne Porter, ‘He’.

Katherine Anne Porter (1890-1980) wrote just one novel and fewer than thirty short stories, yet she is regarded as an important twentieth-century American writer, with ‘He’ among her most celebrated and critically acclaimed works. An important theme of Porter’s work is the search for meaning in a modern and increasingly materialist world.

This 1927 story is about a poor American family. The mother, Mrs Whipple, loves her second son best of all: a boy who is identified only as ‘He’ and who appears to be mentally and physically weak. The story invites us to question whether Mrs Whipple has the best interests of her son at heart, or whether she is more concerned with being  seen  to be a good parent to her child.

J. D. Salinger, ‘Down at the Dinghy’.

This is a short story by J. D. Salinger, originally published in 1949. As in some of Salinger’s other stories, notably ‘A Perfect Day for Bananafish’, ‘Down at the Dinghy’ involves an adult speaking to a child. However, in this case the theme of the story – which remains largely in the background until the end of the story – is anti-Semitism.

The story is about a young boy who runs from home and goes down to the nearby lake, where he gets into a dinghy and refuses to speak to his mother. ‘Down at the Dinghy’ also involves the conversation between two of the family’s servants, one of whom has made derogatory remarks about the father of the family (as well as his son). The story ends with the mother being reconciled with her son and bonding with him over his dinghy.

Isaac Asimov, ‘The Fun They Had’.

This is a short story by the Russian-born American writer Isaac Asimov (1920-92). Like Asimov’s novel The Naked Sun , this story is one that has taken on new significance in the wake of 2020 and the shift to remote learning and working, and the themes of this 1951 story are as relevant to our own time as they were over seventy years ago when Asimov wrote it.

In the story, which is set in the year 2157, two children find an old paper book and reflect on how quaint it is, when compared with television screens on which they read in their own time. Stories about school, especially very short stories that are just a few pages long, lend themselves to study at school, and Asimov’s tale is light enough and brief enough to fit the bill, while also carrying some intriguing commentary on education and technology, among other things.

Ray Bradbury, ‘All Summer in a Day’.

This is a 1954 short story by Ray Bradbury (1920-2012), who (like Asimov) is often classed as a ‘science-fiction author’ although he preferred to describe himself as a fantasy writer. The story is set on Venus, where the sun only comes out once every seven years for a couple of hours; the rest of the time, the sun is hidden behind clouds and rains fall constantly.

‘All Summer in a Day’ is about a group of schoolchildren who have grown up on Venus, the sons and daughters of ‘rocket men and women’ who came to the planet from Earth, as the children prepare to experience the first ‘summer’ on Venus that they can remember.

Amy Tan, ‘Two Kinds’.

Let us conclude this pick of the best short stories about childhood with a short story by the American author Amy Tan (born 1952), published as part of her book The Joy Luck Club in 1989. The story is about a young American girl born to Chinese parents; her mother pushes her to become a child prodigy, but the daughter resists.

A powerful tale about pushy parents and their children, ‘Two Kinds’ invites us to explore what motivates a ‘pushy parent’ to encourage (or coerce?) their child into working hard to achieve something. Does the mother in the story have her daughter’s best interests at heart when she tries to make her learn the piano? Where does a parent’s well-meaning desire to see their child succeed spill over into interfering with the child’s desire not to do a particular thing?

When I was a kid in early and mid-1990s China, one item above all marked a family’s entry into the country’s burgeoning middle class: a color television. My family owned one, which helped initiate me into the ecstatic world of Chinese cartoons and other children’s programs. Back then, the television was merely an enjoyable means of whiling away weekday afternoons and weekend mornings. Decades later, when memories of this childhood were at their haziest, lightning would strike in my life to trigger a reinterpretation of those days — a reinterpretation that would reverberate beyond my past and into the present, and beyond my life and into today’s world of migration, faith and ethnic rivalry.

What Happens When Abusive Parents Keep Their Children

In February 2023, Phoenix Castro was born in San Jose, Calif., suffering from neonatal opioid withdrawal after being exposed to fentanyl and methamphetamine in her mother’s womb.

Her mother was sent to jail and then ended up at a drug treatment facility. But her father, who had multiple drug arrests, was allowed to take the newborn to his San Jose apartment, even though a social worker had warned that the baby would be at “very high” risk if she was sent home. The county’s child protection agency had already removed the couple’s two older children because of neglect.

Three months later, Phoenix was dead from an overdose of fentanyl and methamphetamine.

The ensuing uproar, chronicled in detail by The Mercury News, focused on new efforts by the county to keep at-risk families together. In the past, children often would be removed from unsafe homes and placed in foster care, and newborns like Phoenix in all likelihood would not have been sent home.

Those policy changes led to a “ significant ” drop in removals of children from troubled homes in the San Jose area, according to the state’s social services agency. They reflected a larger shift in child welfare thinking nationwide that has upended the foster care system. Reducing the number of children placed in foster care has been hailed as an achievement. But leaving children in families with histories of abuse and neglect to avoid the trauma of removing them has had tragic results.

We need to ask whether avoiding foster care, seemingly at all costs — especially for children in families mired in violence, addiction or mental illness — is too often compromising their safety and welfare.

The use of foster care has been in decline even as more children are dying from abuse and neglect in their homes. In recent years, the number of children in foster care fell by nearly 16 percent while the fatality rate from abuse and neglect rose by almost 18 percent. Many factors were and are at work, among them caseworker inexperience, a lack of resources and the high bars for removing children from their homes that have been erected by child welfare agencies, policymakers and judges.

What is clear from a sampling of states that release fatality reports in a timely fashion is that we are seeing deaths of children in cases in which they had been allowed to remain in homes with records of violence, drug use and neglect.

In Minnesota, a children’s advocacy group’s study of 88 child fatalities in the state from 2014 to 2022 found that “many of these deaths were preventable” and were the result of a “child welfare philosophy which gave such high priority to the interests of parents and other adults in households, as well as to the goals of family preservation and reunification, that child safety and well-being were regularly compromised.”

The prioritization of family preservation has been advanced by states and the federal government and by the nation’s largest foundation focused on reducing the need for foster care, Casey Family Programs.

Three ideas seem to have guided the effort: the child welfare system is plagued by systemic racial bias, adults should not be punished for drug addiction, and a majority of children in the system are simply in need of financial support and social services.

This effort was bolstered in 2018 with the passage by Congress of the Family First Prevention Services Act , which enables states to use federal funds “to provide enhanced support to children and families and prevent foster care placements through the provision of mental health and substance abuse prevention and treatment services” and other programs.

The push certainly has been well-intentioned. There was a sense that child welfare authorities had overreacted to concerns about a crack baby epidemic in the 1980s. Mothers were arrested and babies and children taken away. The number of children in foster care more than doubled between 1985 and 2000. There was also deep concern — concern that persists — that Black children in particular were bearing the brunt of being removed from their homes and sent to foster care, which can cause its own upheaval for children.

In some states, the reductions in the number of children in foster care were drastic. But there are limits to how much those numbers can be reduced without putting children in grave danger.

In Santa Clara County, Calif., where Phoenix Castro died, an inquiry the previous year by the California Department of Social Services into the county’s child protection agency found “multiple” instances of “children placed into protective custody by law enforcement,” only to have the county agency “immediately” place “the children back in the care of the unsafe parent.” (In what appears to be an about-face by the county, The Mercury News reported that in the last two months of 2023, the number of children removed from their homes was triple the two-month average for the previous months of that year.)

In an email to Santa Clara County’s Department of Family and Children’s Services staff in 2021, explaining the new emphasis on keeping families together, the director at the time described the move as part of the county’s strong commitment “to racial justice and to healing the historical wounds underlying disproportionate representation of children of color in the child welfare system.”

As much as racial disparities in foster care are deeply troubling — Black children are twice as likely as white children to spend time in foster care — Black children also suffer fatalities from abuse and neglect at three times the rate of white children. Which means that policies intended to reduce disproportionality by reducing foster care may actually be resulting in more deaths of Black children.

Foster care is not a panacea. The trauma children suffer from suddenly being removed from their home and their siblings, to be placed in a strange home with a caregiver they don’t know, is well documented. But the alternative, allowing a child to remain in a dangerous home, should never be an alternative.

  • Use simple language and avoid complex terms, as they can confuse the examiner. The simpler your answer, the higher your score.
  • Write your answers in a logical and organised manner. Structure your answers with separate paragraphs, bullet points, flowcharts, tables, etc., as this makes it easier for the examiner to read and understand your answer.
  • During the preparatory phase, use colourful pens, flashcards, charts, and drawings to learn concepts well. This method helps in recollecting the answers during exams.
  • Indulge in self-testing methods by practicing sample question papers, demo tests, and solving previous year question papers to understand the probable questions and the exam pattern.
  • Having a time management strategy in place is important. Allocate time for different types of questions and try to solve them within the given time frame.

  • Understand the topic well and follow the instructions.

Illinois man who allegedly shot neighbor, a white woman with Black sons, charged with hate crime

An Illinois man was arrested and charged with a hate crime after he allegedly shot his neighbor several times in what authorities say is a racially motivated incident.

Around 5:37 p.m. Tuesday deputies were called to an area in Lockport Township for reports of shots fired. The responding deputies were told that the victim, a 45-year-old woman, had been shot by her neighbor, the Will County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release on Facebook.

Witnesses identified the shooter as John P. Shadbar and said he had "shot the victim outside and was walking around his property with a rifle," according to authorities. They said he allegedly fired dozens of rounds at the woman "from different outside locations."

The shooting was captured on video from security cameras in the area. The sheriff's office said they believe it was racially motivated.

Deputies provided life-saving measures to the woman and she was taken to the hospital in critical condition. Authorities said she had been shot in the chest and hand and underwent surgery. She is currently recovering, the sheriff's office said.

The victim was identified by family members as Melissa Robertson. The family told NBC Chicago that they have been harassed by Shadbar since they moved in 10 years ago. Robertson is white and her sons are Black.

Mikeal Johnson, one of Robertson's sons, told the news station that during one incident Shadbar allegedly yelled slurs like "dead n-words, n-word this, n-word lover."

"[He] called me the n-word straight to my face," Johnson said. "My mom made him apologize. A few days later he comes out holding a gun in his underwear."

Other times, Shadbar would allegedly fire his gun in his yard and toss fireworks between the homes, the family said.

During Tuesday's incident, he was yelling "dead n-word" and was trying to get into the family’s backyard, Robertson’s aunt, Jeanne Beyer, told NBC Chicago. Robertson’s 8-year-old son witnessed the shooting, the family said.

Authorities said Shadbar, 70, barricaded himself inside his residence after the shooting. After speaking with him on the phone, a crisis negotiator convinced him to exit with his hands up, according to the news release.

Deputies said Shadbar made "several incriminating statements" while speaking to the crisis negotiator.

He was transported to the Will County Adult Detention Facility and charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm, unlawful use of a weapon by a felon and a hate crime. The sheriff's office said additional charges are likely.

The family said that they contacted authorities several times over the years about the alleged harassment, but nothing was ever done about it. NBC News reached out to the Will County Sheriff’s Office.

"This did not need to happen at all. Not just our lives, but his life and his wife’s and our neighbors are all affected by it," Johnson told NBC Chicago.

Shadbar appeared in court on Thursday and was denied pretrial release.

In January 2022, we first told viewers about Chuck, a man with dementia who was taken to the hospital but was able to walk away and die.

His body was found weeks later -- just blocks from the hospital.

During Chuck’s disappearance and after his death, we took a closer look at all that went wrong in our documentary called 53 Days.

Little did we know that documentary would strike a chord with a classroom full of future health care workers. Students were determined to make a change, and their ideas are now becoming reality in multiple states.

“We have wanted this for so long. To actually see it come full circle, it’s crazy,” said Daylee Ellis, a Mingo Central High School senior.

Across the country, high school seniors are wrapping up those final days in the classroom -- looking forward to receiving that diploma.

But Ellis said a paper she’s been dreaming of is a little different. It has a purple hue, and it won’t be handed out at a ceremony.

These purple papers will be making their way through health care facilities in her community. Call it a passion project turned reality -- just in time for graduation.

It’s one Ellis believes will keep those who suffer from dementia a little safer -- the purple color alerting those who provide care to a patient’s cognitive issues.

The idea for the purple papers started in a classroom this year after Health Sciences teacher Andrea Clark gave her students an assignment -- to watch our documentary 53 Days.

It, of course, is Chuck Carroll’s story. He was taken to a hospital in Huntington for fever and vomiting but was able to walk away -- and die.

Chuck’s body was found 53 days later -- just blocks from the hospital.

Teacher Andrea Clark said she learned about Chuck’s story - from her cousin Nikki Hatfield.

“I opened the article, and I went out to watch the WSAZ, that you had done Chuck’s story. After i saw it, I went immediately and showed her the whole thing,” Hatfield said.

She works in health care in Tennessee where she’s also a student -- ultimately hoping to become a pharmacist.

WSAZ’s Sarah Sager asked her, “Did you ever dream that, you know, showing Andrea would create what’s happened now with how far things have come and well you’ve all been working on?”

Hatfield: “I really did not. I knew that it was going to hit close for her as it did for me. I never imagined that the students would take it as far as they had. but the fact that they have has opened so many doors for future health care workers for future nurses, anyone coming in or out of that program. and hopefully one day after speaking with Andrea, there is hope that this will grow to reach further regions of the country.”

And it has. The Mingo Central students have officially rolled out the purple papers at two skilled nursing facilities.

While Hatfield, as a part of a project toward her Masters degree, has helped to distribute purple alert forms in Sevierville, Tennessee.

“I sat down with all the medical assistants in a large group. I did a presentation for all of them and kind of just explained things, brought up some interesting points, showed them the clips from chuck’s story, 53 Days, and really explained to them how important it was to me that we get started here,” she said.

Hatfield told Sager that, during a six-week period, more than 3,100 patients were seen and about 15 percent filled out a purple alert form.

But the students and Hatfield believe the papers could go even further.

Sager : Where would you like to see this go ultimately?

Hatfield: I think that it is just important as the pink DNR papers. Of course every hospital has those. I feel the purple papers have the same importance when it comes to ranking things, especially in hospital settings, I think it is necessary.

“I really hope that it becomes not just statewide but like a nationwide thing,” Daylee Ellis said.

Statewide and nationwide are not outside the realm of possibilities.

“I actually spoke with your instructor about going to the American Health Care Association and seeing if they can get it pushed throughout of the state because it’s something that’s definitely needed in nursing care, hospitals, nursing homes and day cares. It’s very lacking in our communities.”

While these students hope to reach and help others with their purple papers, they say they’ll never forget where it all began.

“We’ve worked really hard to get these papers out and we’re trying to distribute them locally, so that we can make a change so that Chuck can make a change and so that his story can always be remembered throughout our community,” Ellis said.

Those seniors last day of high school is Friday, May 17, and graduation at Mingo Central High School is next Friday -- May 24.

In the meantime the juniors -- soon to be upcoming seniors -- will continue working on this project.
