Harkara Movie Review: Weak screenplay pulls down this well-intended film

Rating: ( 2.5 / 5).

Ever since I walked out of the theatre after watching Harkara , the song ‘ Anjalkaaran ’ has been reverberating in my head, and so is the film’s core theme. Albeit being an interesting page from the history of India’s first postman, the over-dramatised screenplay makes it a run-of-the-mill film.

Helmed and performed by Ram Arun Castro, Harkara is the story of two postmen from two different timelines. In the present, Postman Kaali (Kaali Venkat), is assigned duty in the obscure foothill of Keezh Malai, but he wishes to get a transfer from the underdeveloped tribal village. Does he change his mind after listening to the story of India’s first postman Madheshwaran/Harkara (Ram Arun Castro)? tells the rest of the film.

Ram's staging is brilliant, as we get hooked on to the conflicts faced by Kaali within the first 20 minutes. For instance, the film begins with a scene where a woman from the village wakes Kaali up, in the dead of night for her savings money, effectively highlighting how naive and atypical the local people are.

As we get hooked on to the narrative, Kaali starts climbing uphill to deliver a letter to Mariyammal, who has been awaiting it for years. Unfortunately, this is the point where the film’s engaging factor starts tumbling down and it takes a while to get back on track.

It is said that the postal services played a key role in delivering government secrets and important messages to the most inaccessible regions across the country, nay, the world. The flashback portions of Harkara , where we travel into the life of Madheshwaran, give us a glimpse into this postal history. We are shown that the Harkaras are trained in martial arts, medicine, and a host of other skills. As these portions, featuring Ram Arun Castro start to become compelling, the avoidable storylines and hurried conflict resolutions, make the stretch feel lacklustre.

We see a great amount of time dedicated to Madeshwaran’s love story with Durga (Gautami Chowdry). Especially the love song that pops up just as the film gets gripping, becomes the last straw on the camel’s back. It is a wonder that these portions weren't trimmed down in the edit table, as the conflict resolution in the flashback involving the Britishers and their despotism feels quite hurried and flat.

It is in these portions we expect Harkara to wear nationalism on its sleeves and accentuate the heroics of the man who stood up for his people. But the film fails us, as it resorts to an overdose of melodrama. Also, Madheshwaran's decision to rebel against his long-trusted British master, feels so hasty and forced, making him feel like a lesser hero.

Don’t get me wrong. The Harkara’s sacrifice at the end did manage to wet my eyes. But, rather than being an instant tear-jerker that highlights the physical torturing of the protagonist, perhaps smarter writing that explores his emotional battles would have left us with a longer-lasting effect.

All this said and done, Harkara does end with sweet surprises. No points for guessing whether Kaali changes his mind or not in the end. But, it is quite heartening that it is a personal encounter that triggers Kaali's change of heart aside from the sacrificial tale of Harkara . Ram Arun Castro neatly envelopes a neglected aspect of the Postal services at the end of the film, which stays with us even after we step out of the theatres. So it is safe to say that his message posted to the audience has been safely delivered to our hearts, despite the obstacles on the way.

Director Ram Arun Castro, whose outing Harkara, got mired in legal dispute, has now been cleared for release. The film, which is said to be based on India's first postman, is all set to hit screens in theatres tomorrow. Harkara was supposed to be released today (August 24), but a day ahead of the release, the Madras High Court had issued an interim injunction to restrain the release.

According to a report in DT Next, R Chidambaran had filed a case against Harkara in the Madras High Court seeking a permanent ban on the film stating that he was not given the due credits in the film. According to Chidambaram, the film was originally titled Oatta Thooduvan and that he and Ram Arun Castro had equal shares in the project. His counsel stated that Castro had added a couple of scenes in the film, renamed it to Harkara, and taken solo credit as the writer and director. The film's release was then postponed.

However, now we hear that all decks have been cleared and that Harkara is gearing up to drop in theatres tomorrow (August 26). The film traces the history of India's postal service and the first postman, and is presented by the makers of V1 Murder Case.

The plot of the film is set in a mountainous village in Theni where a new postman arrives. One day, when he listens to the story of Harkara, India's first ever postman, his life changes forever. While Kaali Venkat plays a postman of contemporary times, Ram Arun Castro plays the Harkara. The trailer was released by post men and post women in Tamil Nadu.

Harkara review: Only half as good as it ideally should have been

Despite the brilliant performances and the stunning visuals, Ram Arun Castro's directorial fails to connect and move you.

Good attempt but falls flat.

Director Ram Arun Castro, who impressed audiences with his performance as an actor in the investigative thriller V1 (2019), chose to not just act but also direct this time.

The story of his directorial Harkara , which its makers claim is based on facts and real-life incidents, revolves around two people.

Postman Kaali (Kaali Venkat) is posted to a sparsely populated village that is right on top of some inaccessible but scenic mountains.

Matheswaran (Ram Arun Castro) is a Harkara or messenger who carries messages to inaccessible regions in the same region during the British rule of India.

Harkara undoubtedly has a significant story to tell. Sadly though, the movie does not narrate the story in a gripping manner and falls flat, making an impression that it is only half as good as it ideally should have been.

Kaali, the newly appointed postman to the lone post office atop the scenic mountain of Eesan Malai, is disillusioned and looking desperately for a transfer. The reason for his desperation is the place of his posting.

Located in the higher reaches of the mountain, the village, for all practical reasons, is cut off from the rest of the world.

kaali venkat harkara

What is even more annoying to him is the fact that the small, sparsely populated village, comprises mainly illiterate people who use the post office more as a bank than anything else.

Kaali pleads for a transfer. However, his officers in the city flatly refuse to entertain his request, pointing out that they cannot find a replacement for him.

It is at this time that the postman gets an idea. He realises that nobody in the village is educated. So, he chooses to write a petition on behalf of the villagers to the government, asking it to close down the post office and instead open a bank there.

He also fools the villagers into stamping their thumb impressions on this petition.

He believes that the move will result in him eventually getting transferred to another place closer to civilisation.

Soon after having done this, Kaali goes about his job of distributing mail.

One day, a letter that has to be delivered to an elderly woman in the highest point of the neighbouring range, comes to his post office.

Kaali sets off to deliver it and during his long trek, he gets to know about his first predecessor Matheswaran or the Harkara, whom the locals now worship as God.

The story leaves a profound impression on Kaali and makes him change his mind. What the story is and how it changes Kaali is what Harkara is all about.

Fails to connect with viewers.

There can be no two ways about the film’s content. It is rich and refreshing. However, the story fails to connect because of some of the questions that invariably crop up in your mind as the developments begin to unfold.

For instance, the Harkara is shown delivering mail in the region to locals in pre-independence India. This is a little difficult to accept as the initial portions of the film give us the impression that almost all people in the village are uneducated and illiterate.

If people living in the village in this day and age are illiterate, then how could those who lived in the same village during the pre-Independence era be educated enough to write letters?

The film’s soul lies in the ultimate sacrifice that the Harkara makes at one point. However, the reasons that push him to make the sacrifice are not convincingly told. In other words, this portion is not put across strongly enough to the viewers.

Overwhelming to hear what the celebs feel about #Harkara after watching the premeire ☺️🥰 Feel Good, emotional, patriotic & everything in a fine presentation. Releasing in cinemas on August 25th. pic.twitter.com/o49PKyOudp — Ramesh Bala (@rameshlaus) August 23, 2023

Brilliant cinematography

Having said that, Harkara is worth watching for a number of reasons.

The breathtaking visuals of cinematographer Philip R Sundar and Lokesh Elangovan simply leave you spellbound. The good news is that these visuals don’t just appear in one portion but throughout the movie.

Ram Shanker’s music, for a few minutes in the first half, comes across as jarring and makes it difficult for one to follow dialogues.

However, as the story progresses, his background score just blends into the story, accentuating the mood and complementing the beautiful visuals on screen.

An impressive show by actors.

Ram Arun Castro Harkara

Kaali Venkat, who made it a habit to come up with impressive performances, delivers yet another realistic performance. He effortlessly slips into the skin of the role as a postman.

Ram Arun Castro, who plays the Harkara, impresses as well. In particular, the Silambam action sequences where he is shown wielding a staff to perfection speak volumes about the amount of training the man must have put in to play the part.

Gautami Chowdry as Durga has few dialogues to deliver. But that doesn’t stop her from owning several scenes and making it all about her.

She lets her eyes do all the talking and ensures that her silent expressions ring louder than the dialogues her male counterparts utter.

A word of appreciation to the makers for their efforts in attempting to shoot this flick in such inhospitable terrain is in order.

In all, Harkara can best be described as a noble attempt to tell a heroic story. Sadly though, it fails to connect and move you.

Vijay Antony, who is riding high on the success of Bichagadu 2, has now come up with a crime thriller titled Hatya. Directed by Balaji K Kumar, the movie also stars Ritika Singh and Meenakshi Chaudhary in other key roles. The movie has hit the screens today, and let’s see how it is.

Laila (Meenakshi Chaudhary) is a professional model who gets killed in her flat. What’s mysterious is that her flat is locked from inside during the crime. Sandhya Mohan Raj (Ritika Singh), an IPS officer, takes up the case, and she seeks the help of her master and private detective Vinayak (Vijay Antony) to solve the case. Though Vinayak disagrees initially, he later teams up with Sandhya to crack the murder mystery.

Both Sandhya and Vinayak doubt Babloo (Kishore Kumar), who pretends to be Laila’s manager, Satish (Siddhartha Shankar), who is Laila’s boyfriend, Arjun Vasudevan (Arjun Chidambaram), who is a renowned photographer, and Aditya Kowshik (Murali Sharma) an agent who works at a modeling company. Who killed Laila is what the movie is all about.

Plus Points:

Hatya looks completely different due to the amazing production design. We have been seeing more investigative thrillers recently, and what differentiates Hatya from others is how its world is portrayed in a unique style. The fantastic cinematography gives a fresh feeling altogether to this crime thriller.

Vijay Antony played a private detective in Hatya. His salt and pepper look seemed very natural. One of the best things about Hatya is his subtle performance. Vijay Antony does what his character demands precisely and doesn’t go overboard. The way he delivers dialogues and the manner in which he reveals the final twist is magnificent.

Some of the investigation portions in both the halves are shown in detail, and especially when the investigation points fingers at all four suspects, the film turns out to be interesting. Meenakshi Chaudhary, around whom the entire film revolves, did a fine job. There is a poetic touch to her character. Ritika Singh lends a nice support to Vijay Antony.

Minus Points:

One of the biggest drawbacks of the film is its slow pacing which irritates after a point in time. Initially, significant screen time has been taken to introduce the characters, but even after the investigative portions start, the film moves at a slow pace. The editing team could have trimmed the length of many scenes for a better experience.

The initial part of the second half takes a big diversion from the main story as we get to see family scenes related to Vijay Antony’s character. The director tried to infuse family emotions, but that wasn’t absolutely necessary to this plot.

Murali Sharma and Radhika Sarathkumar have nothing much to do in the film, and both senior actors are wasted in small roles. On top of that, Murali Sharma didn’t dub in Telugu and it is a bit problematic to see someone else dubbing for the fantastic performer.

Technical Aspects:

Girishh Gopalakrishnan’s background score is good in the second half. The retro style of music worked well in a few scenes. The cinematography by Sivakumar Vijayan is fantastic. The art direction deserves special applause as the artwork gave a completely new touch to the film. The VFX works could have been better. The production values are neat.

The editing needs some serious corrections. Coming to the director, Balaji K Kumar, he did a below-par job with the movie. While he handled some investigative portions well, he brought in unnecessary family drama in the second half that diluted the proceedings. However, the biggest drawback of Hatya is its pacing which is painfully slow. Even a few decent sequences lost their impact due to the ultra-slow pacing.

On the whole, Hatya is a slow-paced crime thriller that largely depends on Vijay Antony’s compelling performance. Though a few investigative portions are handled well, the slow narration played spoilsport. The plot gets significantly deviated in the second half with unwanted family emotions. Hence Hatya ends up being a strictly okay watch this weekend.
