Jersey movie review: Nani, Shraddha Srinath film is a rewarding story of triumph and self discovery

Jersey movie review and rating: jersey, starring nani and shraddha srinath, plays out at two levels — as sports drama and a tale of a father and son — and works at both levels. rating: 4/5.

Film : Jersey Director : Gowtam Tinnanuri Cast : Nani, Shraddha Srinath, Sathyaraj, Rao Ramesh Rating : 4/5

Jersey stars Nani and Shraddha Srinath in lead roles.

It’s the season of sports films in southern cinema and the success of recent films such as Kanaa, Natpe Thunai and Majili is proof to the popularity of the genre. If done right, sports dramas can be both moving and inspiring and there can’t be a better example than Nani starrer Jersey, which is truly a rewarding story of triumph and self-discovery. Even though it comes across as a familiar story of dreams and failure set against a sports backdrop, it goes beyond exploring the usual tropes that are generally associated with such films.

Jersey, which predominantly unfolds between 1986 and 1996, revolves around a cocky ex-Ranji cricketer Arjun ( Nani ), who is undoubtedly the best player of his time. Sarah (Shraddha) is madly in love with Arjun and she marries him against her father’s wishes. At the peak of his career when he’s due to be selected for the Indian team, Arjun decides to quit cricket after being let down by politics in the selection committee. Reality hits him hard and he’s no longer the arrogant Arjun he used to be as he reminds himself he has a wife and son to look after. 10 years after he’s bid adieu to cricket, he starts playing once again to prove himself at 36 for the sake of his son.

Jersey is both a competent sports drama and a moving tale of a father and son. This is not the story of a hero; this is one of a father who doesn’t want to disappoint his son, of a husband who wants to finally bring a ray of hope into his wife’s life and of a cricketer who wants to fulfill his coach’s long-time wish. This is the success story of a man who has seen more failures and constantly been beaten by life but refuses to give up.

In recent years, no other filmmaker has made a sports film with such ease and conviction, and Gowtam makes a strong mark with this story of a late bloomer. Jersey humanizes a sports star and shows us how his failures can affect the people close to him. Instead of making this a story of glory and success, Gowtam makes this a tale of redemption and self-discovery.

Nani hits all the right notes in his portrayal of a former cricketer and a father in Jersey.

Nani is terrific as Arjun and he hasn’t looked so comfortable in role in a while. As Arjun, it’s extremely difficult to see Nani in the role and that’s probably the biggest achievement of Jersey, which also features Shraddha Srinath in a pivotal role. As the guilt-ridden couple struggling to keep their marriage afloat, it’s through her unspeakable words Sarah places her faith in Arjun and the scenes between them are so refreshing. There are scenes where we see them living under the same roof and not conversing but one can still sense the love they have for each other. The ever reliable Sathyaraj as the coach shines in yet another role which he can even play in his sleep.

Arjun’s relationship with his son is what really makes Jersey a heartwarming father-son bonding drama. It’s their relationship that really drives the story forward. It is through the son’s eyes, we see Arjun without judging him. Some of the film’s best moments are between Arjun and his son.

Jersey manages to showcase the cricket games as convincingly as possible. The effort that has gone into getting trained for his character is quite visible in Nani’s performance. From the stands to the shots and the follow through, Nani gets the body language of a batsman right and is a treat to watch while playing.

Jersey movie review: Shahid Kapoor film is sincere but lacklustre

Jersey movie review: shahid kapoor-mrunal thakur-starrer film, an official remake of the 2019 telugu hit of the same name and by the same director, has all the elements of an inspirational sports drama..

jersey movie reviews

Jersey movie cast: Shahid Kapoor, Mrunal Thakur, Pankaj Kapoor, Rituraj Singh, Ronit Kamra, Geetika Mehandru Jersey movie director: Gowtam Tinnanuri Jersey movie rating: 2.5 stars

A wildly talented cricketer, dealing with a flatlined career and an uncertain future. His wife, at the end of her tether, trying her best to keep everything going. Their young son, who sees the father as an idol, the recipient of unshakeable faith. And the secret which spills out, lighting up a loser who is, in reality, a winner, not just for his family, but for his friends and fellow-players.

jersey movie reviews

The world of Arjun Talwar ( Shahid Kapoor ) revolves around Vidya (Mrunal Thakur), and Kittu (Ronit Kamra). It’s your average middle-class family, based in Chandigarh , dealing with dripping walls and unpaid electricity bills, and the weight of the man of the house who is struggling to find a path for himself.

Jersey , an official remake of the 2019 Telugu hit of the same name and by the same director, has all the elements of an inspirational sports drama. A leading man nursing a crucial secret which curbs his sporting ambitions. Authentic cricketing action in the inter-state Ranji matches, minor skirmishes between players, politics amongst the selectors of the Indian team. And the insistence on keeping it low-key, which instantly makes everything relatable. But the film is too stretched at 172 minutes, and the hero is too hangdog: ‘Jersey’ needed to be a little more rousing to keep us engaged all the way.

In the original, the leading man is forty, and the key relationship between the father and son (Kamra was also in the Telugu film) is more contentious. In the Hindi remake, Arjun Talwar is younger, at 35. And the hero-worship between him and his son doesn’t shift, despite everything. It would have been interesting to have more texture in the interactions between Talwar Sr and Jr, like there is in the arc between Arjun and Vidya, which starts from youthful giddiness to the sober realisation that life cannot be lived on love and fresh air alone.

Festive offer

The film comes alive in the sequences between Shahid and his real-life father who plays his never-say-die coach and mentor. Pankaj Kapoor delivers a lovely, relaxed performance, which shows up the constriction of the son, who appears much more in command when he is smashing fours and sixes on the field, and too morose off it. The reason for his sliding off the scale is left as a big reveal in the remake, but it comes too late: the original version had given us an early hint, and that had helped us understand the depth of the hero’s pain. Here, the plot provides Shahid too few moments to let his guard down and show us his vulnerable side: more of those would have left a decided impact.

An emotional end, even if it feels very last-minute, provides the essential drama that a movie like this needs. That, and the message that it’s never too late to make your dreams come true. Overall, though, Jersey comes off sincere but lacklustre.

Jersey Movie Review: Shahid Kapoor and Mrunal Thakur Jersey rests on outstanding performances, emotional moments, and the touching finale.

While shahid kapoor jersey scores with its performance and touching finale, the slow pace and opposition from kgf 2 will limit its box office prospects., jersey review {3.0/5} & review rating.

JERSEY is the story of a common man with big dreams. In 1986, Arjun Talwar ( Shahid Kapoor ) is a talented cricket player from Chandigarh. He's in love with Vidya ( Mrunal Thakur ). Vidya's father opposes their relationship and hence, both elope and get married. Sadly, Arjun fails to make it to the Punjab Ranji team. Arjun's coach and mentor, Coach Bali (Pankaj Kapur), advises him to try next year. But Arjun decides to quit. He takes up a government job and shifts to a government quarter with Vidya. Vidya gives birth to a son, Ketan aka Kittu (Ronit Kamra). In 1996, the lives of Talwars are not going great. Arjun has been suspended on corruption charges. A lawyer has told him to pay a bribe of Rs. 50,000 to get back his job. However, Arjun refuses to do so. Their kitchen is running thanks to Vidya's job at a five star hotel. She is frustrated as she feels Arjun is not doing anything with his life. Kittu, meanwhile, has been enrolled into cricket coaching. One day, he asks Arjun to buy him the team India jersey. Arjun promises to buy him one on his birthday, which falls a few days later. However, Arjun learns that the jersey costs Rs. 500 and hence, it's beyond his budget. He tries to take a loan from his friends but his efforts prove futile. Vidya refuses to hand him the money as she feels that she needs to save for far more important expenditures. Meanwhile, Coach Bali tells Arjun that a charity match will be played between Punjab and New Zealand. The Punjab team is looking for a batsman. Arjun agrees to play the match, especially when he learns that each player will be paid Rs. 1,000. What happens next forms the rest of the film.

Jersey

JERSEY starts on an intriguing note, in present-day Bengaluru. The first half oscillates between the 1986 track and the 1996 track. A few scenes stand out here like Arjun attacking the player who insults Vidya and Arjun applying cream on Vidya’s hands. The scenes where Arjun slaps Kittu and later gets slapped by Vidya are quite moving. The charity match sequence is exhilarating and so is the intermission point. Post-interval, the scene where Arjun heads to the railway station just to shout in excitement is too good. Vidya asking Arjun to fly instead of going by train is cute. The final match is euphoric. The finale is unexpected.

Gowtam Tinnanuri's story is touching, despite being a bit clichéd. Gowtam Tinnanuri's screenplay works well at certain places. A few scenes are written exceptionally. However, the writer should have reduced the length of some sequences for a better impact. Siddharth - Garima's dialogues are normal, though a few one-liners stand out. Too much Punjabi has been used, however, which should have been avoided.

Gowtam Tinnanuri's direction is fair. The pain and dilemma that the protagonist goes through come out very well. Hence, one is connected to the character from start to finish. There are some heroic scenes in the film that are helmed in a commercial manner. When it comes to the emotional quotient, Gowtam gives his best. On the flipside, he has made a scene-by-scene remake of the Telugu original film. Those who have seen it will not find anything novel here. Moreover, at 171 minutes, the film is needlessly lengthy. A few scenes might make viewers restless, especially in the first half, which has a sluggish pace. The director should have realized that the sensibilities of the Hindi audiences are different and hence, should have shortened or maybe done away with a few scenes here and there. A few aspects of the film are unconvincing. Chief among them is Arjun and Vidya’s strained relationship. Lastly, there’s far too much cricket in the second half, with the commentary being in English. This alienates a large section of the audience. Even 83 [2021] faced the same issue. The makers should have learnt from it, especially when they had the time, and re-dubbed the commentary in Hindi.

Speaking of performances, JERSEY rests on Shahid Kapoor’s strong shoulders. The actor has given his hundred per cent and gets into the skin of his character. In several scenes, his eyes do the talking and it’s seen to be believed. JERSEY proves yet again that Shahid is one of the best actors at present in Indian cinema. Mrunal Thakur’s character is not fleshed out properly. However, she performs very well. Ronit Kamra is cute. Pankaj Kapur is quite good and shares great chemistry with Shahid. His dialogues in the climax, however, are difficult to comprehend. Geetika Mehandru (Jasleen Shergill) is adorable and delivers a confident act. Rituraj Singh (Mahesh sir) is dependable. Anjum Batra (Amrit) is nice as Arjun’s sidekick. The actor playing Ravinder and adult Kittu is decent.

Laugh Riot: How well do Shahid Kapoor & Mrunal Thakur know Cricket? | Jersey

Sachet & Parampara's music is average.  'Mehram'  has an exhilarating feel and stands out. The rest of the songs like  'Maiyya Mainu', 'Baliye Re'  and  'Jind Meriye'  are not memorable.  'Baliye Re'  works due to the visuals. Anirudh Ravichander's background score gives the adrenaline rush.

Anil Mehta's cinematography is splendid. The off-the-field scenes are shot marvellously by the veteran DOP but it’s the match scenes that work big time. Shashank Tere's production design is realistic. Payal Saluja's costumes are non-glamorous, as per the requirement of the script. Nihar Ranjan Samal's sound adds to the impact. Manohar Verma's action is minimal and entertaining. NY VFXWaala's VFX is fine though it could have been better. Navin Nooli's editing is poor as the film should have been shorter by 20-30 minutes. Special mention should go to Rajiv Mehra's cricket coaching and Rob Miller's sports choreography as the cricket scenes seem very authentic, thanks to them.

On the whole, JERSEY rests on Shahid Kapoor’s outstanding performance, the emotional moments and the touching finale. However, due to the slow pace, long length and opposition from KGF - CHAPTER 2 in single screens, JERSEY’s box office prospects will be limited only to multiplexes and the metros.

Jersey Review: Shahid Kapoor's Star Turn Holds The Film Together

Director: Gowtam Tinnanuri

Rating : 2.5 stars (out of 5)

A man's undying passion for cricket, a father's life-altering promise to his seven-year-old son and a husband's many failings in a marriage between unlike poles provide the warp and weft of Jersey , writer-director Gowtam Tinnanuri's remake of his 2019 Telugu hit of the same title. Parts of it are a snug fit. But segments of the 170-minute film, now out in the theatres after numerous postponements, could have done with some pruning.

The emotional chords that Jersey hits, especially those that pertain to the father-son relationship, make the right music, but perfect consonance eludes the film because far too much of it is devoted to the sporting action around which the story revolves.

The cricket on view suffers the repercussions of overkill and tends to be monotonous, predictable and exaggerated. It is worsened by the shallowness of the running commentary, which of course is the bane of most Indian sports dramas driven by the belief that the audience needs constant spoon feeding.

On the field, Jersey is an unending flurry of maximums, a large percentage of them flowing from the bat of the protagonist; off it, the film strings together some delicate cuts and glances in service of a poignant tale of a man desperate to make up for lost time.

While much of the credit for what works in Jersey should accrue to Tinnanuri's screenplay, it is Shahid Kapoor's star turn that holds the film together. The actor is impressively restrained and layered as he fleshes out a man dealing with the consequences of the missed chances and quirks of destiny that, despite his stupendous feats as a batsman in first-class cricket, stopped him short of greatness

In a brief prelude, a young man walks into a bookstore in Bangalore - the Telugu Jersey opens in Times Square, New York - and picks up the last copy of a bestselling cricket biography. The next scene reveals that the book is about his father, "the best batsman of his time".

It is about Arjun Talwar, a very gifted Punjab batsman who was a prolific run-scorer in his heydays. We see a glimpse of the man walking out to bat in a mid-1980s Duleep Trophy final in which he helps North Zone register a famous win.

Cut to ten years later. Why Arjun Talwar never got a national call-up is still the beyond the comprehension of the man himself and his long-time coach and mentor (Pankaj Kapur). As the story gathers pace, it is revealed that he hung up his boots at the age of 26 never to return to a cricket field.

Now 36, Arjun is a spent force. Life has painted him into a corner. His will to claw his way back into the thick of the action, whether as a cricketer out of touch with the sport or as a government employee under suspension for bribery, has deserted him.

His wife Vidya (Mrunal Thakur) wants him to redeem himself by proving his innocence and wrest back his job. His son Ketan (Ronit Kamra), who has inherited his dad's cricketing genes, wants him to buy him a Team India jersey for his birthday because the boy believes he will be the school team captain if he sports one. Talwar is unable to fulfil either wish.

He needs Rs 50,000 to bribe his way back into government employment and Rs 500 to buy a jersey. Vidya, a Chandigarh hotel employee, is keen to help him financially with the legal appeal against his suspension but is in no mood to spare the money for a piece of clothing. So, poor Arjun scours Chandigarh for the meagre sum he requires in to order not to disappoint his son.

This bit of the plot, one of the film's most crucial narrative pegs, is unconvincing to say the least, pretty much like the sixes and fours that the man smashes at will when he has a cricket bat in his hands. It comes across more as a contrivance than a believable struggle of a gentleman with his back to the wall.

Despite its overly simplistic moorings, Jersey has emotional heft because the father's desire to live up to his son's expectations is palpable and essential, if devoid of complexity. Arjun's negotiations with his wife, on the other hand, are marked by ambiguity and elements of uncertainty.

It is not often that a Hindi film portrays a man-woman marital relationship with such sobriety. In Jersey , gender roles are blurred seamlessly. The woman is her own mistress and does not shy away from putting her foot down when matters come to a head. Her man respects her for her sternness, a fact that comes to the fore even when the marriage teeters on the edge. Neither of the two raves and rants to get a point across.

Jersey is, in the end, a story of loss and hope, tragedy and tenacity, the vicissitudes of fate and the assertion of the human spirit. It is told with a fair degree of flair until the 'explosive' cricket action gets in the way.

The best way to enjoy the film, therefore, would be to discount the flatness of the one-way cricketing action - everything Arjun does on the field is crowned with success, so one is never exactly waiting with bated breath to find out how his outings with the bat are going to pan out - and concentrate on the unfolding and shifting family drama that is on offer.

On the acting front, Shahid is the Man of the Match all right. The team effort behind him is strengthened by the performances from Mrunal Thakur, who lends a quite grace to conveying both the inner turmoil and the fortitude of a woman holding firm amid many an upheaval, and Ronit Kamra, a confident child actor who played the same role in the Telugu original.

Although the character of the hero's cricket mentor, a man who has never graduated beyond being the assistant coach of the Punjab team, isn't etched out with sufficient clarity, Pankaj Kapur, being the actor he is, sails through the role with aplomb.

In one sequence, when the character has gone from being old to very old, Kapur effects a sharp intonation change and holds a consistent line with it. Pure magic. Had Jersey packed more such strokes into its repertoire, it would have shone much brighter.

‘Jersey’ review: A uneasy walk back to the crease

Gowtam tinnanuru’s official remake of his telugu hit ‘jersey’ stars shahid kapoor, mrunal thakur and pankaj kapur..

‘Jersey’ review: A uneasy walk back to the crease

Shahid Kapoor delivered one of his career’s biggest hits with Kabir Singh , the remake of the Telugu-language Arjun Reddy . Kapoor’s new film Jersey is also from Hyderabad. Gowtam Tinnanuru has remade his film of the same name from 2019, barely tinkering with the source material and even adding some minutes to the running length.

The 171-minute Hindi version is the saga of Arjun (Kapoor), a talented batsman who is on the edge of a promising career when he steps back from the game. Suspended from his government job after being falsely accused of corruption and forced to depend on his wife for money, 36-year-old Arjun has all but been turfed out of the sport and, it appears, from life itself.

This ticking time bomb, who is ripe for psychological counselling, is forced into action when his son demands a jersey of the sort worn by the national cricket team. Unable to afford the sum of Rs 500 – the film is set mostly in the 1990s – Arjun finally begins the steep climb towards glory.

Arjun’s long-time coach Bali (Pankaj Kapur) is his biggest advocate. Having declared that Arjun is the best Indian batsman in the annals of the game, Bali waits for his protege to get his act together.

The chronicle of heroism needs a villain, and should have found it in Arjun’s self-doubt. Tinnanuru’s screenplay half-heartedly explores Arjun’s crippling self-doubt, poor anger management and prickly pride. Somewhere along the feel-good arc of this typical sports drama is hidden a potentially curious film, one in which we better understand men like Arjun – flawed and egoistic but also vulnerable and endearing in their stubborn idealism.

Instead, Tinnanuru heaps some of the blame at the feet of Arjun’s wife Vidhya (Mrunal Thakur). Circumstances have transformed Vidhya from Arjun’s biggest cheerleader to his biggest detractor. Understandably fed up of her sulking husband and anxious about their precarious bank balance, Vidhya is nevertheless portrayed as the main obstacle that Arjun must navigate during his triumphant march back to the pavilion.

Arjun’s misery occupies nearly half the film’s runtime. It’s a downer all the way until Arjun begins swinging a metaphorical bat that sends the ball to the boundary.

But Tinnanuru isn’t done. He saves for the end a secret about Arjun so big that it has escaped his cricket handlers and has even evaded his biographer. So much for her reporting skills.

Despite operating in a realistic register, Jersey is frequently prone to exaggeration. Arjun’s advanced age – one of the key reasons for the doubts about his comeback– vanishes as soon as he begins to re-connect bat to ball. Sidharth-Garima’s dialogue actually trots out the cliche that “age is only a number”.

A charity match assumes as much importance as a World Cup event. When Arjun tries to borrow money from Vidhya, she hands over her entire jewellery collection.

It always keeps coming back to Vidhya. The relationship between husband and wife is as inconsistent as Arjun’s bond with his son is rock-steady. The Hindi remake ignores the opportunity to course-correct the punitive attitude towards Vidhya in the original Telugu film.

Shahid Kapoor and Mrunal Thakur are admirably committed to a narrative that goes on for far too long but says little about the challenges faced by older athletes. Kaun Pravin Tambe? , the biopic of the bowler who made his Indian Premiere League debut at the age of 41, did a far better job of portraying its lead character’s struggle for validation.

Kapoor broods well and wields the bat with confidence too. Mrunal Thakur, despite being saddled with a poorly written character, ably conveys Vidhya’s anguish. As Arjun’s buoyant coach, Pankaj Kapur lends much-needed lightness to a film that sometimes feels as heavy as its self-pitying hero.

Jersey Movie Review: Script Analysis

Using the already tried and tested formula (also by a Shahid Kapoor film), Jersey retains the original director of its predecessor in the Telugu version. Just like Sandeep Reddy Vanga in Kabir Singh , Jersey’s OG director Gowtam Tinnanuri steers the ship of the Hindi version as well. This is how a movie/subject should be adapted, by asking the same mastermind to do the trick once again but with different material. Thankfully, I jumped into this sea full of surprises without watching Nani’s version, and that helped to delve into Arjun’s chaotic life establishing a better connection.

Yes, it uses all the classic tropes of sports films like rising through family struggles, and predictable last-ball deciding matches but the narrative doesn’t solely rely just on these ideas. You have a lot to cover apart from cricket matches and family drama, like father-son’s unbeatable bond, a couple’s rocky relationship and an inside journey of a man who could’ve been (or could be by the end).

Gowtam Tinnanuri’s impeccable character-building lets him paint Arjun so well, that he speaks loudest when he has nothing to say. When the world is moving towards the short-content-consumption era, it’s always a delight to see a film clock 170 minutes keeping the intrigue alive for a major chunk of the total duration. A story that sketches a character’s journey from start to finish, that inculcates even a glimmer of hope in many distressed lives.

Anil Mehta brings his usual best in the scenes apart from the sports sequences because those are treated very game-like with some close-up shots. The pause-and-pan camera technique used in a couple of cricketing shots works deliciously in the favour of the makers. In another brilliant move, makers also retain the same editor Naveen Nooli to perfectly know what should stay and what should be edited out.

Jersey Movie Review: Star Performance

Even when Shahid Kapoor isn’t playing your guy-next-door, chocolatey hero kinda characters for quite some time now, the image does come out just when it’s required. Like here, even though Arjun is an all-serious person but to make him charming, Shahid just smiles and does a peculiar thing to his face to change the mood in the same sequence. Shahid not only gets the father aspect of Arjun right, but he nails the cricketer’s side as well. He plays a lot with his expressions, achieving every mood with perfect ease.

Thank to the holy heaven, Mrunal Thakur’s Vidya isn’t another flowerpot character to fill in the void of having a leading lady. Vidya does impact a lot of what Arjun does in the film, and Mrunal with a stunning conviction shows the dark side of struggle as well. While Arjun is struggling, Vidya showcases how hard the struggle is for the entire family. There’s a scene in which she smiles as she cries, and I couldn’t hold back the single tear sliding down through the edge of my eyes.

Pankaj Kapur plays a father-figure coach to Shahid Kapoor’s Arjun and the script smartly uses their real-life bond to add a comfortable depth on-screen. Pankaj Ji in his all elements also turns into a comical relief at times proving why he’s really an ‘all-rounder’ of this game. Ronit Kamra as Shahid’s son shoulders not one but multiple scenes on his very subtle reactions. Without crossing any line, Ronit creates this nuanced aura around him mastering every scene he’s in.

Jersey Movie Review: Direction, Music

Amid the debate of Bollywood VS South, people like Gowtam Tinnanuri are the ones who show why it doesn’t need to be a clash? When you can mix up emotions from stories of certain fabric, and mash them with similar elements broadening the target audience of a similar story. It’s crazy to know how some tweaks to the same story can expand its reach by serving a wider group of people. Gowtam packs an emotional entourage around one person, showing how the changes in his life affected everyone around him.

From what I can recall, this is Anirudh’s first ‘Bollywood’ film to compose the score for, and he continues to wave his magical wand for this one as well. The thumpy, not ‘noise’ to your ears background score adds real impact to many scenes. Sachet–Parampara’s songs are exceptionally placed, but the compositions could’ve been way better.

Jersey Movie Review: The Last Word

All said and done, Shahid Kapoor continues to add some interesting innings in the second phase of his life, and Jersey is surely one of them. A rare and almost-perfect blend of drama, (predicable-yet-interesting) game & everything else.

Three and a half stars!

After several postponements and delays, the Shahid Kapoor-starrer highly talked about film Jersey   hit the big screens on 22 April 2022. Directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri, the film follows the story of a sportsperson deciding to follow his dream while navigating his tumultuous relationship as a father and a husband. It is a remake of the 2019 Telugu film of the same title. The film stars Shahid Kapoor, alongside Mrunal Thakur. Along with them, it also stars Shahid's father Pankaj Kapur and Ronit Kamra in pivotal roles.

Ahead of its release, the film was successful in creating a massive buzz online with Shahid Kapoor's powerful acting and hard-hitting dialogues in the trailer garnering all the attention.

Jersey Review

Jersey is a soulful heart-touching story that follows the life of former Ranji Cricket player Arjun Talwar who faces lots of ups and downs in his life and despite all the circumstances he bounces back stronger. The film opens with a young man in New York City who buys a book titled  Jersey  from a bookstall but later gives it to a woman who came to purchase it. The woman asks the reason why he's letting her have the copy to which he says that it's his father's story. Then the film goes back to the flashback where Arjun Talwar an immensely talented Ranji player, who at the peak of his successful career decides to leave cricket after he fails to make it to the Indian team. Following this, he lands up getting a government job but loses that after he is accused of false bribery.

The movie then jumps to 10 years later in 1996, showing a 36-year old Arjun who is jobless and is often taunted by his wife Vidya and other people for not doing anything in his life. The only person who trusts him is his son Kittu who believes in his father and loves him immensely.

His son Kittu, like his father, is interested in cricket and plays for his school cricket team. On this birthday, Kittu asks Arjun for an Indian jersey that is worth rs 500. The film then follows the struggle of a father in buying a Jersey for his son and how he revives his cricket career and becomes his son's ultimate hero.

What works:

Gowtam Tinnanuri who helmed the original version of the film lived up to the audience's expectations. Right from its first scene, the film catches pace and engages the audience through the emotionally striking journey of Arjun Talwar. Despite difficult circumstances, the lead protagonist never gives up in his life. He manages to find hope in every situation, like for an instance in one of the scenes, due to non-payment of the electricity bill, the officials cut off the power supply of Arjun's house, seeing his disheartened son he says let's light the house with candles all over for a change. Such small-small detailed scenes strike a chord in the heart of the audience. The dialogues of the film are well written, crisp and to the point that has a perfect blend of emotions as well as humour.

The humour element and emotionally-stirring moments are the core element of the film. This one will see Shahid Kapoor delivering his career’ best performance with ease as he gets into the skin of his character and picks up a cricketer's body language with utmost perfection. From being a rebel during his mid-20s to being an emotionally sober man in his late 30s, Shahid's character connects with the audience from the very beginning and helps them feel what he is going through throughout his journey.

Mrunal Thakur and Shahid Kapoor's pair comes as a fresh breath of air. Shahid Kapoor's scenes with his reel life coach and real-life father Pankaj Kapur are like the cherry on the cake. Their camaraderie throughout the film and the way he stood by Arjun in his thick and thin makes the audience believe that the father-son duo very well knows how to weave magic on the screens.

The major highlight of the film was Arjun Talwar's son Kittu who manages to bring a smile to the faces of the audience with his charm and innocence. Arjun's bonding and his love for his son stole the entire show. Their scenes are not just well written but very well enacted by the two actors. The film beautifully shows Arjun becoming his son's idol and reviving his career and it imparts a very strong message that it’s never too late to follow your dreams.

What doesn't work:

Since it is a remake, those who have already watched the original film will try to draw a comparison between both the film which itself is a drawback. Moreover, the flashbacks are not well synced so the audience might feel disconnected at some points. Apart from that, there are certain dialogues that are in the south Indian language, which the audience might find difficult to understand. The songs too, leaving one or two did not leave a strong impact.

Review: Final Thoughts

The film gives a sneak peek into a cricketer's life but more than being a sports film it strikes a perfect balance between sports and human emotions. It imparts strong life lessons in every scene and urges the audience to stand strong and be hopeful no matter how difficult the situation is. For those watching it for the first time, they will definitely love the film, but those watching it again should go with a fresh perspective.

In the end, it will leave the audience teary-eyed making Arjun's character immortal in the minds and hearts of the audience. Overall Jersey is a must-watch film that has all the elements and will make you laugh, cry and cheer throughout.

'Jersey' Review: Hits the Ball Out of the Park

'Jersey' Review: Hits the Ball Out of the Park

Movie: Jersey Rating: 3.5/5 Banner: Sithara Entertainments Cast: Nani, Shraddha Srinath, Sathya Raj, Praveen, Sampath and others  Music: Anirudh Ravichander Cinematographer: Sanu Varughese Art: Avinash Kolla Editor: Navin Nooli Producers: Suryadevara Naga Vamsi Written and direction: Gowtam Tinnanuri  Release date: April 19, 2019

Nani’s “Jersey” has generated lot of interest ever since its first look was released. The movie’s trailer received unanimous positive response further spiking up expectations. Has the movie lived up to expectations?

Let’s analyse.

Story: Arjun (Nani) quits cricket at the age of 26 though he scores many centuries and wins matches. He tells wife Sarah (Shraddha Srinath) that he wants to do regular job and joins as a manager in FCI. However, he loses this job on wrong charges and he’s struggling to make ends meet though his wife works in a hotel.

Set in 1996, the story then narrates how Arjun, now 36-year-old wants to play for Ranji matches again, to fulfil his young son’s wish.

Will he succeed at this age that normally is considered retirement stage in professional sports? What is the real secret behind Arjun quitting from the game at 26?

Artistes’ Performances: Nani, without a doubt, has given his best performance. Matured acting this is. The internal turmoil of a failed cricketer, the helplessness of a penniless father, and the struggle with all the problems… Nani has portrayed them with perfection. He is also quite believable in the jersey of a cricketer. He has carried the mood from start to finish.

Besides cricket and sentiments, this is also performances driven movie and Nani leads from the front.

Shraddha Srinath as his wife has also given competent performance. Hers is not a glamorous role. She has pulled it off well.

Sathya Raj as Nani’s coach is excellent. After Nani, Sathya Raj gets more role. The kid Ronit is cute and gives touching expressions. Sampath as coach is neat.

Technical Excellence: Anirudh Ravichander’s tunes are not so catchy but his work in the BG department is huge asset. Cinematography by Shanu is top-class. He has filmed cricket matches in a realistic way.

Art work and production values are superb. Dialogues are fantastic. Screenplay writing is excellent.

Highlights: Story Nani’s performance Emotional scenes Background score Cinematography

Drawback: Runtime Excessive cricket footage

Analysis Very rarely we get to see movies based on cricket in Tollywood. “Jersey” is totally different in terms of plot, genre and narration. This is not a regular Tollywood movie.

Even though it touches on the aspects of husband-wife differences, father-son sentiment, this is more about making your dreams come true overcoming all obstacles.

As a journalist writes a book on Arjun’s life (played by Nani), it stresses the point that “it’s never too late to dream”.

36-year-old Arjun aiming to get a place in the national team is the basic point. But director Gowtam Tinnanuri has layered many elements to tell it in a compelling manner. To hold the sports drama till the end, one needs emotional pitch. This is where Gowtam has succeeded.

Why does Arjun dream to join the cricket team at the age of 36 after quitting at 26 voluntarily? Because he wants to remain as a hero in son’s eyes forever. This point is the core element of “Jersey” and this has given the required emotional touch to the sports drama.

Director Gowtam Tinnanuri has begun the movie by going back and forth from 1986 to 1996, from revealing his current life of wife and kid and his early romance with his future wife.

After establishing these, he comes to the main point, his son asking for an Indian Cricket team’s Jersey and Arjun aiming for it and from here, the director narrates the story in a straight forward manner. He doesn’t forcibly include any twists.

Everything happens as one can easily guess, still it is engaging enough, and it unfolds without pretence. And he brings a good twist in end that makes the film complete.

It is quite interesting from start to finish. The first half builds on characters and their problems and the second half goes on emotional pitch.

The director has also dealt the wife-husband’s gap in a matured way. The father-son sequences are endearing. The Railway station scene is a wonderful moment.

Nani’s performance is brilliant that make the movie even more engaging.

On the downside, the film runs on slow pace and has taken plenty of time to come to the main point. Also the cricket matches become repetitive after a time. The film needs trimming.

All in all, “Jersey” is an inspirational sports movie that tells the triumph of the common man and teaches you to never give up. Aided by natural performance of Nani and heart-warming moments, “Jersey” is a winner. This will appeal to audiences who like classy movies.

Jersey is a sweet little drama that hits a home run on the strength of its heart and hero, applauds Sukanya Verma.

jersey movie reviews

A promise can be a driving force.

A promise can be a burden.

But when a father struggles to get an Indian cricket team jersey for his son, a promise becomes a life mission.

Jersey is a father-son story whose source of sentiment is one's innocence and the other's failure.

But there is no special attempt to garner sympathy.

Unlike Aamir Khan trying really hard to be a perfect dad in Akele Hum Akele Tum , the bonding between Arjun (Shahid Kapoor) and his seven-year-old Kittu (Ronit Kamra) is a given.

Rather the story, told across multiple flashbacks across the '80s, '90s and present-day, only begins when his dad is down in the dumps and has grown somewhat uncommunicative with his family.

Once 'the best batsmen of his time' Arjun's glory days as a domestic cricket star are long behind him and his only consolation and source of income, a Grade III officer position in a government job is a stalemate following a corruption case languishing in the courts.

Ten years have passed and Vidya 'the girl who was always there to cheer for him' is no longer a starry-eyed cheerleader, but a bitter half, a picture of slowly-built resentment (Mrunal Thakur).

A distant, solemn energy has superseded their once passionate equations but little Kittu is too young to understand the complexities of the grown-up world or judge them over it. And that hits Arjun more than having let down anyone -- be it his wife or his coach (Pankaj Kapur).

It's perpetually wintry in Chandigarh where Jersey captures its gloomy resident Arjun idling all his time around equally down-on-luck pals, pointing out flaws in upcoming players to their gushing girlfriends yet resisting any attempt to talk shop around his father-figure coach.

Despite his defeated state of mind, Jersey finds moments of humour in his everyday life and creates an endearing air through the people that touch Arjun's lives.

Everybody may have stopped expecting miracles out of him but they are more than willing to help.

Of these, Pankaj Kapur's affectionate coach is foremost.

The scenes between the real-life father-son are so effortlessly warm, its sheer genuineness instantly wins you over.

I had a big smile on my face when the Senior Kapur gushes, 'He's different' and the scene cuts to the offspring obsessing over sauce on his samosa . Fans of the Kapur-Javed Jaffery iconic ketchup commercial will remember.

Gowtam Tinnanuri's faithful remake of his Telugu hit is about a batting beast forced to hold back the fire in his belly for reasons that go well beyond the demands of domestic life. Except brooding is no less injurious to health.

Arjun then decides it's time to swing that bat again.

If the only way to stay alive is to give up what keeps you alive, the only way to love is to make that life count.

It's like a character quoting Rajesh Khanna's Anand reminds us, ' Zindagi lambi nahi badi honi chahiye .'

Anand's life motto forms the essence of Arjun's journey from champion to loser to not out.

And Shahid Kapoor throws himself in the part resulting in a performance that feels splendidly lived-in.

It's not the first time we've cheered for a failed, frustrated protagonist triumphing against all odds.

There's almost a pattern to these stories, their emotional graph and our emotional reaction to it.

What is unique about Jersey is that in place of soppy melodrama or stylish training sequences (even though there's no death of adrenaline-pumping rock ballads), it gives us a poignant insight into a tenacious mind.

Arjun's problem isn't form or spunk -- it's age, diminished self-worth and braving that awkward, misfit feeling around youngsters still to face the hard knocks of life.

It's all the more challenging when a sport that welcomed a young daredevil with open arms is skeptical of his worth when he tries to attempt the same in his mid-30s.

Director Tinnanuri gently makes a case for late bloomers sans sermons or stunts. Like the rock-solid Nani of the original, he finds a spectacular embodiment of his ideals in Shahid Kapoor.

Shahid is excellent at containing debilitating emotion.

The greater Arjun suffers, the smoother he lands.

There are times when his back is turned to the screen and yet you hear the sound of his heart break into a thousand pieces.

It's only in that brief moment of outburst he allows himself, drowning out his screams against that of a running train, the extent of his dormant volcano shows.

The actor's comfort with the bat is commendable and injects zest in an otherwise predictable winning streak (DoP Anil Mehta wielding his magic on cricket once again after Lagaan ).

Tinnanuri repeats the kid from his Telugu drama and Ronit Kamra is innocuous if not dazzling as the son whose jersey wish triggers it all.

I was impressed by the actor (Prit Kamani) playing his grown-up avatar as well as his stunning resemblance to Shahid.

But why is that whenever the focus is on father-son, the woman gets the short end of the stick?

That's where Jersey loses some ground.

The movie acknowledges Vidya's support but makes her look unreasonable even when there is no need.

Her animosity is understandable when Arjun is stuck in good-for-nothing mode, but why single her out as a grump even after he gets his act together and succeeds?

It's good then Mrunal Thakur is far too likeable to stick out as a sore thumb.

All in all, Jersey is a sweet little drama that hits a home run on the strength of its heart and hero.

Hollywood at the Jersey Shore. This Margate restaurant to be the set of a new film

Hollywood is coming back to the Jersey Shore this week.

Dino's Subs and Pizza of Margate announced via Facebook on Tuesday that inside dining will be closed on Wednesday, June 5.

The reason? "Hollywood called and Dino's answered," the restaurant's post explained.

Owner Tim Wainwright told the Courier-Post that the movie "People Not Places" starring Shirley MacLaine and Stephen Dorff is responsible for the restaurant takeover.

Wainwright said that Dino's has been in business for over six decades and that they are excited to host a piece of Hollywood and also happy that the film crew chose Margate.

According to the film's IMDB page , the drama centers around a "sprightly woman in her twilight years (who) strikes up an unlikely friendship with a local homeless man, while struggling to mend a troubled relationship with her son."

MacLaine, 90, is known for her roles as Aurora Greenway in "Terms of Endearment" (1983) and Ouiser Boudreaux in "Steel Magnolias" (1989).

The film is being directed by Brad Furman.

As of Tuesday, filming was only set to take place on Wednesday, and takeout, pickup and delivery will still be available for customers via tents on the side of Granville Avenue.

"Honored, Privileged, and Excited to announce that Steve's Burgers on Route 46 has been chosen by @adamsandler and @netflix to shoot a scene for the new and heavily anticipated Happy Gilmore 2 movie coming soon to Netflix!" Burgers wrote. "We will keep you all posted on shooting dates so you can possibly meet the man myth and legend himself! Adam Sandler, who starred in and co-wrote Universal Pictures’ "Happy Gilmore," will reprise his role as Gilmore, a hockey player with anger management issues who discovers a talent for golf.

The original film, directed by Dennis Dugan, remains one of Sandler’s most popular comedies.

Fans of the franchise showed their excitement and support in the comment section of the Instagram post. One user commented, "How many burgers do I need to buy to be an extra or at least meet the Sandman lol."

Jennifer Aniston knows what she likes.

The “Friends” favorite might be known for her love of little black dresses , but switched things up with a red floral midi at an Emmy FYC Event for “The Morning Show” in Los Angeles Sunday — and it turns out she owns the same design in another pattern.

Aniston, 55, can’t get enough of Reformation’s Kourtney dress ($278), wearing the slinky style in a burgundy hue at Paramount Studios over the weekend and in a black floral print for an April Instagram post .

She wore the midi dress — which features a high slit and spaghetti straps that tie at the back — with strappy red heels and a red teardrop necklace at the “Morning Show” promo event.

Aniston styled her blond hair in her typical straight style, adding gold hoop earrings and two chunky gold bracelets.

While both her black and red floral frocks are currently out of stock, those looking to copy the A-lister’s look can sign up to be notified when the latter’s available again — and if you don’t want to wait, you can grab the same dress in a springlike green floral print or a pretty white-and-blue toile pattern right now.

The “Murder Mystery” star is far from the first famous face to step out in Reformation on repeat, with everyone from Sydney Sweeney to Jennifer Lopez favoring the sustainability-focused fashion brand.

Taylor Swift owns five different pairs of shoes from Ref and has rocked plenty of its other pieces, including the red knit Radlee dress ($98) she wore for dinner with Sophie Turner and the Jadey swearer  ($298) her bestie Selena Gomez also owns .
