3.8 Paragraph building

Knowing how to produce a well-structured, cohesive paragraph will help you to present your own ideas and understandings clearly, together with good supporting evidence for your argument(s).

Paragraph criteria

  • Has a topic sentence with a controlling idea
  • Has an appropriate number of supporting sentences (3-8 can be taken as a guide) which can include explanations and examples, as well as giving appropriate evidence and a link to your major argument (shown in the thesis statement)
  • Uses appropriate cohesive devices
  • Has only one main idea
  • Is written in an academic style
  • Is grammatically correct

Paragraph structure

Topic sentence:

  • The topic sentence for each paragraph introduces the controlling idea. Although it can come in the middle or at the end of the paragraph, it is a good idea to make it the first sentence. This allows you to present your own ideas so the writer’s voice (your voice) is evident.

Supporting sentences:

  • These include your own explanation(s), any examples, details and supporting facts you may want to give, and most importantly, evidence from your reading to support your arguments.

Concluding sentence:

  • This can sum up the main idea running through the paragraph and connect it to the main argument of the essay as a whole (as shown in the thesis statement in the introduction). It can also form a link with the following paragraph, although this link may be made at the beginning of that next paragraph.

NOTE 1 : If your explanations need to be quite lengthy, you can put the evidence in a separate paragraph.

NOTE 2: Have you noticed how the structure of a paragraph reflects that of an essay as a whole:

Cohesion within the paragraph

Cohesion is the term given for the ways of structuring the flow of information so that the links between ideas are clearly expressed. Four important ways of making writing ‘flow’ and ’stick together’ are:

  • Use of TRANSITION SIGNALS such as conjunctions (e.g. and, although) and sentence connectives (e.g. however, finally). These show a logical relationship of ideas, e.g. but (contrasting/opposing idea); so (result); moreover (additional idea); lastly (time); because (reason).
  • Use of REFERENCE through pronouns (e.g. he, it, we, they)
  • REPETITION of key words and phrases in different forms (‘chains’ of words). (See below for examples.)
  • THEMATISATION where the words before the first finite verb are the focus (or theme ), and the idea they express may be linked to those at the beginning of the next clause or sentence. Alternatively the new information (after the first finite verb) in one sentence may become the theme in the next. (See below for examples).

The following paragraph shows what happens when cohesive devices are not used:

Students work efficiently sometimes. Students may set out detailed daily and weekly plans. There is a semester. Students allot regular rest and leisure activities. Students plot hourly study sessions. The approach to time management follows a pattern familiar from secondary school. Sometimes unforeseen events occur. There can be problems.

Here is the same paragraph using the techniques listed above:

Some students find they 5 work more efficiently if 1 they 5 can develop for themselves 6 a detailed daily and weekly timetable for a whole semester. They 7 allot regular periods for all rest and leisure activities and 2 plot hourly study sessions. This 8 approach to time management follows a pattern familiar from secondary school. However 3 problems can arise when 4 unforeseen events occur.

1. CONNECTIVES:

  • 1. If - a subordinating conjunction which introduces a condition (something may or may not happen).
  • 2. and - a co-ordinating conjunction introducing an additional idea.
  • 3. However - a sentence connective introducing a contrasting idea.
  • 4. when - a subordinating conjunction introducing a time clause.

2. REFERENCE:

  • 5. They (twice). This personal pronoun refers to ’some students’ and it its use avoids the need to keep repeating the word ’students’.
  • 6. Themselves - a reflexive pronoun referring back to the subject of the clause. In this case the subject of this clause is ‘they’ which of course refers to ’some students’.
  • 7. They - again referring to ’some students’.
  • 8. This - a demonstrative pronoun referring to ‘approach to time management’ which in turn refers back to the whole of the previous sentence. Notice that the phrase ‘approach to time management’ could be left out all together and the sentence would still make sense.

3. WORD CHAINS:

  • Words/phrases to do with the idea of studying: students timetable semester study sessions secondary school
  • Word/phrases related to time management: work more efficiently develop ... daily & weekly timetable allot regular periods for .... activities plot hourly study sessions approach to time management
  • Words/phrases related to difficulties: problems unforeseen event

4. THEMATISATION

Notice how the theme in most clauses is students (or ‘they’ referring to students)

Notice how the themes in the paragraph change when a more academic style of writing is used:

A more efficient use of student time can result from the development of a detailed daily and weekly timetable for the whole semester. This approach to time management through the allotment of hourly study sessions and allowance for regular rest periods follows a pattern familiar from secondary school. Nevertheless the occurrence of problems because of unforeseen events cannot always be avoided .

The students have all but disappeared! The only time the word ’student’ appears is as a modifier for the noun ‘time’. In place of people acting on the world, there are abstract nouns representing ideas, and these are embedded in long, complex noun groups which form the themes of the three sentences.

The theme of the second sentence, this approach to time management ... picks up the idea expressed in the new information (the words after the finite verb group ‘ can result ’) in the first sentence ‘the development of a detailed ... timetable’.

The change of theme in the third sentence, the occurrence of problems ..., is signalled by the sentence connector ‘nevertheless’ which shows that a contrasting idea is to come.

Thematising whole clauses:

The idea in a dependent clause is subordinate to the one in the main clause and is very often written after the main clause.

e.g. Alex and Kim were late for their first lecture, because they lost the way to the auditorium.

However the writer may put the subordinate clause first in the prominent position in the sentence as a whole when s/he wants to draw attention to the idea expressed in it.

e.g. Because Alex and Kim lost the way to the auditorium, they were late for their first lecture.

Comparing and Contrasting London and Washington, DC

Both Washington, DC, and London are capital cities of English-speaking countries, and yet they offer vastly different experiences to their residents and visitors. Comparing and contrasting the two cities based on their history, their culture, and their residents show how different and similar the two are.

Both cities are rich in world and national history, though they developed on very different time lines. London, for example, has a history that dates back over two thousand years. It was part of the Roman Empire and known by the similar name, Londinium. It was not only one of the northernmost points of the Roman Empire but also the epicenter of the British Empire where it held significant global influence from the early sixteenth century on through the early twentieth century. Washington, DC, on the other hand, has only formally existed since the late eighteenth century. Though Native Americans inhabited the land several thousand years earlier, and settlers inhabited the land as early as the sixteenth century, the city did not become the capital of the United States until the 1790s. From that point onward to today, however, Washington, DC, has increasingly maintained significant global influence. Even though both cities have different histories, they have both held, and continue to hold, significant social influence in the economic and cultural global spheres.

Both Washington, DC, and London offer a wide array of museums that harbor many of the world’s most prized treasures. While Washington, DC, has the National Gallery of Art and several other Smithsonian galleries, London’s art scene and galleries have a definite edge in this category. From the Tate Modern to the British National Gallery, London’s art ranks among the world’s best. This difference and advantage has much to do with London and Britain’s historical depth compared to that of the United States. London has a much richer past than Washington, DC, and consequently has a lot more material to pull from when arranging its collections. Both cities have thriving theater districts, but again, London wins this comparison, too, both in quantity and quality of theater choices. With regard to other cultural places like restaurants, pubs, and bars, both cities are very comparable. Both have a wide selection of expensive, elegant restaurants as well as a similar amount of global and national chains. While London may be better known for its pubs and taste in beer, DC offers a different bar-going experience. With clubs and pubs that tend to stay open later than their British counterparts, the DC night life tend to be less reserved overall.

Both cities also share and differ in cultural diversity and cost of living. Both cities share a very expensive cost of living—both in terms of housing and shopping. A downtown one-bedroom apartment in DC can easily cost $1,800 per month, and a similar “flat” in London may double that amount. These high costs create socioeconomic disparity among the residents. Although both cities’ residents are predominantly wealthy, both have a significantly large population of poor and homeless. Perhaps the most significant difference between the resident demographics is the racial makeup. Washington, DC, is a “minority majority” city, which means the majority of its citizens are races other than white. In 2009, according to the US Census, 55 percent of DC residents were classified as “Black or African American” and 35 percent of its residents were classified as “white.” London, by contrast, has very few minorities—in 2006, 70 percent of its population was “white,” while only 10 percent was “black.” The racial demographic differences between the cities is drastic.

Even though Washington, DC, and London are major capital cities of English-speaking countries in the Western world, they have many differences along with their similarities. They have vastly different histories, art cultures, and racial demographics, but they remain similar in their cost of living and socioeconomic disparity.

A review of the five-paragraph format

Many writers will be able to detail the five-paragraph format.

  • The introduction previews the entire essay.
  • The thesis statement goes at the end of the introduction and describes what the three body paragraphs will be about.
  • The body paragraphs discuss each topic described in the thesis statement in detail.
  • There should be transitions between each body paragraph.
  • The conclusion repeats key points made in the essay and could be the introduction re-worded in a different way.

These are sample answers from writers who describe what they have learned about the five-paragraph format. The five-paragraph format is a reader-friendly organizational structure that writers can rely on if they need to get information quickly and formally across to a wide audience. For instance, the five-paragraph format might be useful when writing a report to a supervisor with the purpose of explaining progress on a project. The introduction gives the most important information at the beginning and each paragraph is clearly related to one topic. The conclusion leaves the reader with a summary and a possible call to action.

Problems with the five-paragraph format

Donald Murray in his article “Teach Writing as a Process Not a Product”argues writing should be taught as “…the process of discovery through language. It is the process of exploration of what we know and what we feel about what we know through language. It is the process of using language to learn about our world, to evaluate what we learn about our world, to communicate what we learn about our world” (4). However, when writers use writing to discover more about a topic, the five-paragraph format can be limiting because of the following:

  • Writers usually decide on the three main body paragraphs before they start drafting.
  • With three large topics to change from, writers are less likely to dig deep into a specific topic.
  • Writers may use the five-paragraph format in ways that avoid detail and make their essays indistinguishable from other essays on the same topics.

For instance, a writer might want to discuss communication on social media. They decide before they start writing that their three main topics will be Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. By the time they write a few details about Facebook, they move on to Instagram. There is not enough space for the writer to get into details and differentiate ideas on their topic and to describe observations, experiences, and research in depth. When writers start with three main topics, it’s also hard to find the space to teach the reader something new.

Discover with writing

Writing is an opportunity to share unique experiences with readers. If writers feel like they are not sharing anything valuable through their writing, they should reconsider their stance on the assignment or schedule a meeting with their instructor so that they can orient themselves more meaningfully to the assignment. Often, five-paragraph format writing is uninspired. Writers race to jot down what they know on three loosely related subjects so that they can finish the essay. The writer is not learning through the writing and neither is the reader. The main problem with the five-paragraph format is that it discourages writers from discovering what they could write on one focused and specific topic.

When to use the five-paragraph format

Published essays, in any genre, that use the five-paragraph organization are very rare. It might be interesting for writers to pay attention to how published material that they read on their own time is organized. Because first-year writing is a context where writers are encouraged to learn and teach through their writing, the five-paragraph format might not be the best choice for organization. However, when writers are in situations that demand them to relay information quickly, the five-paragraph format can be useful. Formulaic writing is not uninventive or inherently bad. Different genres use various kinds of formulaic writing, and it’s important for writers to adhere to conventions and pay attention to how essays are organized in the genre they are writing in.

When exploring a text, consider the structure and arrangement of paragraphs. Follow the colors in the discussion and example below. Note, if you have difficulty distinguishing between these colors or if you’re not using a color copy of the text, the first shaded part identifies the topic sentence, the shaded part in the middle identifies the support, and the final shaded part identifies the transition.

In terms of structure, an “academic” paragraph includes a topic sentence , which introduces* the paragraph’s main idea. It then offers several sentences (or at least one, as a minimum) to support or explain the topic sentence . Finally, it concludes with a sentence that helps transition to the next paragraph .

*Note that the topic sentence is often, but not always, the first sentence in the paragraph. You’ll hear more about that later. (For more about topic sentences see “ Writing Paragraphs ” in the “Drafting” section of this text.)

Example \(\PageIndex{1}\):

Single-use plastic water bottles cause dangerous substances to “leach” into the soil and water (Macklin). The bottles typically don’t begin to break down for one hundred years, or even longer. Their decomposition may be speeded up by extreme weather conditions, e.g., very hot or very cold temperatures. As they break down, they release dangerous chemicals like bisphenol-A into the soil. Bisphenol-A is an endocrine disruptor, i.e., it can affect the levels of hormones within the human body, creating disease. In addition, BPA is known to be carcinogenic (cancer-causing) in humans. As these chemicals accumulate in the soil, they eventually sink into the water table, contaminating the water (O’Connor). Making these threats even more frightening is the fact that there is currently no known technology for removing BPA and other leachates from the soil and water once they’re there.

Writers may choose to use short or long paragraphs to create specific effects—much the same as using short and long sentences. Short paragraphs can build tension or a sense of expectation, while long ones may create a “stream of consciousness” feeling, in which the narrator’s thoughts, feelings, and reactions are given in a continuous, rambling flow.

The classic arrangement of paragraphs in a text may be described as “linear” or time-based. In other words, the narrator typically starts at the beginning and moves logically to the end. Sometimes a writer will use flashbacks, flash-forwards, or dream/imaginative sequences to affect the usual flow of time in the story or to provide additional information. For example, a flashback allows the reader to learn something about the story’s past they wouldn’t have known otherwise.
