Please note:

Math-Salamanders.com is mainly based around the US Elementary school math standards. It is a site which has been designed for students in the US to learn, practice and improve their math skills.

Though the links on this page are all designed primarily for students in the US, they are also at the correct level and standard for Australian students.

One of the issues you may notice is that some of the spelling may be different as our site and corresponding worksheets use US spelling.

Year 1 is generally equivalent to 1st Grade in the US.

The learning outcomes on this page have been taken from the Australian Education Curriculum Website

On this page you will find link to our range of math worksheets for Year 1.

Life Education

Over the last few weeks, Healthy Harold visited our school in the Life Education van. Our children loved learning about safe and healthy living.

The Life Education program was fully funded by our P&C, meaning all students attended at no cost to families. Thank you P&C!

Year 6 overnight excursion

Congratulations to our fabulous students in Years 5 and 6 who displayed exemplary behaviour on our recent overnight stay in Canberra. Our children thoroughly enjoyed learning about democracy, science and art at our old and new Parliament House, the National Gallery and Questacon. Our children are to be commended for the outstanding behaviour that they demonstrated as they represented our school in our nations’ capital.

District cross country carnival

After two postponements due to rain, we are thrilled that our district cross country carnival will be going ahead this Wednesday. I wish all our students the best of luck as they represent our school with pride and great sportsmanship.

Mother’s Day stall

I hope all of our mums and other family members enjoyed the beautiful gifts that were sold at our Mother’s Day stall. I extend a huge thank you to our kind and generous P&C for organising the stall for our children to do their shopping.

Athletics carnival

Next Monday 27 May, our school will beholding our annual athletics carnival on our school grounds.  All families are welcome to join us on this fun day.

Student led conferences

Student led conferences for Semester 1 2024 will be held on Monday  3 June 2024. Classrooms will be open between 3:15pm - 4:30pm on this afternoon. Parents/carers are welcome to attend at any time during this timeframe.

At the conference, your child will facilitate a conversation with you where he/she will share class and individual learning goals, progress towards achieving them and what his/her next learning goals will be. You will have the opportunity to see what learning expectations are in place for your child, and to see how your child is progressing to meet those expectations. You will also have the opportunity to see your child’s classroom, look through their workbooks and see their work displayed. Other conferences for children will be occurring at the same time as your child’s conference. Teachers will be available to join this conversation that will be led by your child.

If you would also prefer to book in for an individual appointment with your child’s class teacher instead of attending the student-led conferences, please do so by contacting your child’s class teacher through our Seesaw app. Of course, as always, parents are encouraged to request an individual meeting with your child’s teacher at any time of the year to discuss your child’s achievement and growth.

It is the hope of our school that all children and a parent/carer attend the student led conferences or an individual appointment.

Safety on Phillips Avenue

In order to ensure the safety of all children and wider community members of our school, it is essential that the following rules and guidelines are followed during school drop off and pick up times.

·         The speed limit of 40km/h is to be adhered to.

·         Check that no pedestrians are using the children's crossing before driving through it.

·         Follow the parking restrictions. At the front of the school, it is a 2 minute parking zone. This zone is simply to drop children off or pick children up. No car is to be parked in this zone. Drivers must remain in vehicles in this zone.

·         U-turns on Phillips Ave are to be made at the turning bay past the school.

·         No parents/carers are to be using our driveway. The driveway is for staff and contractor use only.

·         Parents/carers are asked not to park across neighbour’s driveways on Phillips Avenue.

It is essential that drivers behave respectfully and responsibly to ensure our children safely enter and exit school grounds each day.

I thank all community members for your assistance in keeping all pedestrians around our school safe.

Public Holiday

There is an upcoming public holiday to mark the King’s birthday. This is occurring on Monday 10 June. Our school will not be open on this day. Children are not to come to school on this date.

Kind regards,

Michelle Barnes

NSW government returns one demerit point to 1.2 million drivers as reward for safe driving

Commuters wait in peak hour traffic in Sydney

More than 1.2 million drivers across New South Wales have had a demerit point wiped off their record as a reward for 12-months of good behaviour.

The Central Coast Local Government Area (LGA) was the single biggest beneficiary of the state government program, with 54,971 residents getting a point back.

Drivers from Sydney's west, who are typically more car-reliant, featured in five of the top 10 LGA's — meaning 290,287 demerit points were scrapped from people living in Blacktown, Canterbury-Bankstown, Cumberland, Liverpool and Parramatta LGA's.

Roads Minister John Graham said it was an encouraging result.

"They have also been the place we've seen the biggest lift in safety. And as a result, more people have had their demerit points wiped in those suburbs," Mr Graham said.

To qualify, licence holders had to be infringement-free from January 2023 to January 2024 to get one-demerit point expunged— a process that can take three years.

The program was an election promise of the Minns government designed to place a sharper focus on road safety amid last year's record-breaking road death toll.

"This is a big community call out to people to drive safely... 1.2 million drivers responded to that call and kept a spotless record for 12 months," Mr Graham said.

"That's good news for them. But it keeps all of us safer."

He said extending the program for another year should bring relief to professional drivers who may have missed out.

"If they lose their license, they can often lose their job. So, this has been a particularly important trial for taxi and delivery drivers."

'Just stick to the law'

On the Central Coast, some locals said the scheme sends the wrong message.

"I think people shouldn't get their points back because they should learn their lesson," Gosford man Bill Sharp said.

"If they're speeding on the road that's their fault… they shouldn't be getting them back."

Another man, a truck driver named John, said the policy encouraged people to get away with speeding.

"Just stick to the law, don't speed," he said.

"I think they should pay the price and learn from it."

In the Canterbury-Bankstown area, 49,258 drivers qualified for the program, with 46,529 in the Northern Beaches, 36,460 in Sutherland and 33,815 in Lake Macquarie.

A combined 1,400 drivers be will rewarded in Bogan, Bourke, Brewarrina and Broken Hill.

The demerit point has started to flow back to drivers since early April.

The last week of Term 1 allowed a group of Year 10 students to investigate the local Anzac history of Plumpton, researching those from the community of Plumpton who enlisted (and for some gave their lives) in the First and Second World Wars. Additionally, they are contributing to Plumpton's commemoration display and with the support of staff will further explore community ties to the Australian Defence Forces and Peacekeeping Operations.

Polar blast strikes Australia: Here's how cold it's going to get

  • Cold front causes low temperatures
  • Rain over Sydney through to weekend
  • Second cold front to hit Victoria and Tasmania
  • READ MORE:  Brave cop wounded in the head while confronting a knifeman in Sydney's CBD is identified

Thousands of Aussies have shivered through the coldest mornings recorded so far this year as a chilly polar air mass continues to hover above the east coast.

The weather system, which sent temperatures plunging across the east, has now moved to the NSW Tablelands and the Mackay and North Queensland areas.

Sky News meteorologist Rob Sharpe said many Sydney residents awoke on Monday morning to temperatures between 7C and 9C.

Overnight, Canberra reached -3C and Hobart recorded only 4C.

Liawenee in Tasmania was the coldest minimum overnight at -5C.

Clear and windless skies at Guyra on the Northern Tablelands of NSW created a hoar frost Sunday morning, with the chilly conditions forecast to hang around into Monday.

Orange in NSW was barely one degree warmer overnight than Dubbo, which reached 0C.

Mr Sharpe said many parts of Queensland had woken up to their coldest morning of 2024, with Mackay recording 9C and just 13C being recorded in Townsville, in the state's north.

He said parts of the NSW Central Coast should experience showers throughout Monday.

The cold front has cleared to the east with a southerly airstream expected across Victoria during Monday and Tuesday as a high south of the Bight moves slowly east, the Bureau of Meteorology forecasts.

The high is expected to be near Kangaroo Island by Wednesday night before moving to the southwest of Tasmania during Thursday and extending a ridge over western Victoria.

While the cold persists, a warmer than average May continues in Western Australia.

'With twelve consecutive days above 25.5C, the average for the month is 22.3C, it’s the warmest May streak in more than 125 years,' Weatherzone  meteorologist Jess Miskelly said.

'It’s also been dry. A couple of days of rain at the very beginning of the month have been followed by persistently dry easterly winds north of a high pressure system that has also been keeping South Australia dry.'

Weatherzone meteorologist Corine Brown told Daily Mail Australia the cold front combined with a low pressure system over the Tasman Sea and a blocking high over the Great Australian Bight will cause lingering showers over Sydney.

'Moist southerly winds will funnel down the coastal fringe with showers continuing and possibly getting up to Hunter Valley tomorrow,' she said.

'Those will ease off from Wednesday afternoon with the blocking high shifting further east.

'Another cold front potentially much further south will affect Tasmania and Victoria but could see strong and moist southerly winds come up again along Sydney and the Central Coast on Friday.

'Showers are persisting on the coastal fringe into weekend before shifting north rapidly by Sunday. Isolated showers are expected to linger on Sunday but won't bring much rain.'

Showers over Melbourne are expected to continue all week alongside chilly temperatures.

There's a medium chance of showers on Monday, becoming less likely in the afternoon.

Wind speeds could reach up to 20km/h before easing in the afternoon.

Melbourne's north-west has a high chance of showers on Tuesday with a medium chance everywhere else.

Minimum temperatures in the city are forecast to dip to 9C on Tuesday and 7C on Wednesday with maximums sitting in the mid teens.

Queensland's capital is looking sunny on Monday ahead of a cloudy Tuesday with high temperatures in the mid 20Cs and a low of 9C on Tuesday.

Wednesday and Friday are looking similarly cloudy with a break of sunshine in between on Thursday.

The city has a medium chance of showers on both Saturday and Sunday.

Partially cloudy skies are forecast to remain over Canberra through to Thursday.

The city will be mostly sunny on Monday with light winds reaching up to to 20km/h in the middle of the day before becoming light in the late afternoon.

There's a chance of morning fog on Tuesday and Wednesday as well as morning frost on Wednesday.

Minimum temperatures in the city are set to fall as low as 1C and 2C.

Adelaide Hills and the city's southern suburbs have a high chance of seeing showers on Monday with a medium chance everywhere else, becoming less likely in the afternoon.

The rest of the week through to Sunday is looking partially cloudy with a chance of morning frost about the northern suburbs on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Adelaide's coldest day for the remained of the week is set to fall on Wednesday with a low of 5C.

Partially cloudy skies are expected to remain over Hobart until showers develop on Thursday.

Cooler temperatures over the city have set in with minimums below 10C and highs in the mid teens through to the end of the week.

Perth is set to be hot through to next week with a consistent high temperature of 27C through to Friday.

That top temperature will drop to 26C at the end of the working week as potential showers move over the city.

Darwin

Darwin will be the warmest city this week with a high temperatures in the mid 30Cs through to the end of the week.

That heat is set to be accompanied by sunny conditions before partial cloud coverage moves over on Thursday.

NSW COVID-19 cases, deaths and testing statistics

The latest weekly case numbers, testing figures totals and related COVID-19 statistics in NSW.

Changes to COVID-19 reporting

From 20 October 2023, weekly COVID numbers will no longer be published here. The best measures of COVID-19 in the community are:

  • admissions to hospital
  • sewage testing.

Detailed information is available in the weekly NSW Respiratory Surveillance Report . Find national COVID-19 case numbers and statistics on the Australian Government health website .

Latest respiratory surveillance report summary

Summary of epidemiological week ending 11 may 2024.

COVID-19 activity is increasing, with increases in most measures, including emergency department (ED) presentations, notifications and COVID-19 test positivity. There has been a particularly large increase in the notification rate of COVID-19 cases in those 90 years of age and older.

NSW Health confirms that the 2024 influenza season has commenced. Influenza notifications and ED presentations for influenza-like illness have increased in the last week and it is likely they will rapidly increase over the next 6 to 8 weeks and influenza activity will quickly reach high levels.

Measures of RSV continue to show a high level of activity although there has been some decline in the youngest children.

This winter, it is anticipated that there will be a large number of people infected with COVID-19, influenza and/or RSV, as all three viruses will be circulating at the same time. Everyone can help reduce the spread of respiratory pathogens through simple measures such as, staying home if unwell and wearing a mask if you need to go out, staying up to date with recommended vaccinations and practicing good hygiene, including regular handwashing.

Data sources and methods

NSW Health continually reviews the methods used to monitor respiratory virus activity in New South Wales. This is due to changes in testing, notification patterns and levels of respiratory virus, including COVID-19, in the community. These changes affect the usefulness of notifications for monitoring virus activity and community transmission over time. The Public Health, Rapid, Emergency and Syndromic Surveillance (PHREDSS) data, COVID-19 sewage surveillance program, whole genome sequencing (WGS) data and sentinel laboratory respiratory virus test results are currently of most value for monitoring COVID-19 and other respiratory viruses of importance in the community. Registration of positive COVID-19 rapid antigen tests (RAT) in NSW ceased on 30 September 2023 and notifications now only reflect cases referred by a doctor for PCR. NSW Health also monitors COVID-19 outbreaks in residential aged-care facilities that are published by the Australian Government and COVID-19 antiviral prescriptions dispensed in NSW.

The data source for this report updates as new information becomes available. Therefore, this report cannot be directly compared to previous versions of the NSW Respiratory Surveillance Report or to previous reporting periods. For additional information on the data sources and methods presented within this report please refer to COVID-19 surveillance report data sources and methodology.

Get tested and stay home

Protect yourself and those around you by getting tested, and stay home if you feel unwell. Even if you only have mild symptoms, you could pass COVID-19 on to someone more vulnerable.
