Students take language certifications like the Cambridge B2 First qualification for lots of different reasons. You might do it to motivate yourself to improve your language abilities, to prove your level of English to an employer, or even to achieve an ambition like travelling around the world and going to live in an English-speaking country.

The Cambridge B2 First exam includes a two-part writing section, which can be daunting for some people. So if you’re thinking about taking an exam like this, we have some top tips to help you write an excellent exam essay.

Most of the advice in this article can also be applied to any exam where you have to write an essay, such as the C1 Advanced, C2 Proficiency or IELTS .

Writing test structure

Before we get into the details, let’s take a look at the structure of the writing paper. You have 80 minutes to write two texts – and it will go quickly!

The first part is the essay; the second part is an article, email, letter, report, or review.

You will be given the essay title and two ideas or prompts . It’s essential that you include both of these ideas in your essay, as well as another relevant idea that you have to come up with yourself .

You have to write 140-190 words in each part and it shouldn’t take you more than 40 minutes per answer .

Writing an essay in three steps

Take a look at this example from a sample paper and then think about how you would answer it in an exam:

Essay title:

Some parents teach their children at home rather than sending them to school. Is this a good or a bad thing for the children?

  • 1. having a parent as a teacher
  • 2. making friends
  • 3. …..

Question taken from http://www.cambridgeenglish.org/exams-and-tests/first/exam-format/ (Cambridge Assessment English, Feb 2018).

What could the third idea be? Stop reading, grab a pen and write down some ideas! Keep them general, but relevant. When you’ve finished, scroll down to the bottom of the page to see some of our ideas * .

Step One: plan it (10 minutes)

Step One: Plan | Writing an effective essay for the Cambridge B2 First | Oxford House Barcelona

That’s what my old history teacher used to tell me. I hate to admit it, but he was right! If you don’t usually plan before you start writing, you really need to get into the habit . Ten minutes may seem a lot, but the more time you spend planning, the clearer your ideas will be and the quicker the writing process will be.

A good place to start is to brainstorm keywords and phrases related to the topic.

Brainstorming Keywords | Writing an effective essay for the Cambridge B2 First | Oxford House Barcelona

Next, you should think about how you’re going to begin ( the introduction ), how you’re going to connect the three main ideas ( the body ) and how you’re going to finish ( the conclusion ). If you know where you’re headed , you’re much less likely to get lost along the way!

Step Two: write it (25 minutes)

OK, you’ve got our plan – you’re good to go ! It’s important to know what the examiners are looking for. The mark you get for the essay is based on the following four aspects :

Content: Have you included all three ideas? Remember, all content should be 100% relevant to the topic, so don’t go off on a tangent !

Communicative achievement: Is the style or tone of your essay appropriate? It should be neutral and quite formal, so avoid contractions (e.g. it’s, don’t, they’ll) and first person pronouns (e.g. I, me, my, we, us, our).

Organisation: Does your essay follow a logical order? To help your writing flow , try to include linking words. Here’s a website with some examples.

Language: Have you used a variety of vocabulary and grammatical structures? Don’t always write the first word that comes to mind – look for synonyms . Using some complex structures (e.g. different verb tenses, passives, inversion) will boost your marks, but be sure to use them correctly!

Step Three: check it (5 minutes)

This final step is essential. It’s your chance to read (and re-read) your essay to identify any mistakes. No matter how careful you’ve been, there are probably a few things that you can improve. Check for spellings. Check for plurals. Check for verb agreement . Basically, check everything!

5 quick tips to improve your proofreading

  • Keep a list of (your) frequent mistakes, so you know what to look out for
  • Read it slowly
  • Use your finger to guide your eyes
  • Correct one thing at a time (e.g. only punctuation, then only spelling)
  • Focus on the little words (pronouns, articles, prepositions, etc.)

Still not sure if this is the right exam for you?

There are many benefits of earning an English certification, but before you decide to do so, it’s very important to check your English level . This will help you select the right exam course and make sure you don’t waste time completing one that’s too hard or too easy for you.

If you decide to do an exam preparation course with us, one of our trained level testers will work with you to assess your level. But, if you can’t wait until then, here’s a multiple-choice test for you to complete to give you some idea.

This article also outlines the differences between the Cambridge and IELTS exams to help you decide which exam is for you.

Practice, write & improve, b2 first (fce) essay: how to write an essay (guide).

It is always an essay written for your teacher, and the start of the question wording is always the same:

In your English class you have been talking about [topic]. Now, your English teacher has asked you to write an essay. Write your essay using all the notes and giving reasons for your point of view.

studying abroad essay b2

We will use the example question below in our writing essay  advice:

In your English class, you have been talking about society. Write an essay using all the notes and giving reasons for your point of view.

University should be free for everyone. Do you agree or disagree?

Write about: 1. Taxes 2. Opportunity 3. …………………… (your own idea)

Step 1: Briefly analyse your task…

studying abroad essay b2

Before you start writing your essay at B2 First exam you need to ask three questions:

What is the topic of the essay?

If you look at our example task you will notice that we are going to write about society .

In your English class, you have been talking about society . Write an essay using all the notes and giving reasons for your point of view.

Knowing this, you can quickly prepare in your head all the words that you associate with this topic or even write them down.

What exactly do I have to include in my essay?

As you can see there are three points included in the task there are two that are already given in our example

Write about: 1. Taxes 2. Opportunity 3. …………………… ( your own idea) <= you have to come up with this one yourself

The first point is taxes , the second is opportunity , and the third one is something you must come up with yourself!

We decided that the third point we would comment on would be economics

Who is going to read my essay?

In the FCE essay, it’s always your English teacher.  It means that you need to write with respect because she is a person with authority, therefore essay has to be written in a formal style.

What is formal style?

studying abroad essay b2

Formal language is professional and serious rather than relaxed and friendly and is used especially in official situations. It is usually reserved for essays and academic settings, while informal writing is used for more casual settings, like friendly text messages and creative writing.

Below are listed the biggest differences between formal and informal writing styles:

Contractions

It is advised to avoid contractions (shortened versions of words) in formal language, but they’re acceptable in informal language.

Unfortunately, the team could not replicate the results. (Formal)

Unfortunately, the team couldn’t replicate the results. (Informal)

Colloquial Phrases/Slang

Formal language is also marked by an absence of colloquial phrases and slang (words or phrases that are common only in everyday speech), but are typically used in informal language.

Everyone was disappointed . (Formal)

Everyone was bummed . (Informal)

First-Person Pronouns

Generally, first-person pronouns (like I and we ) are avoided when writing with formal language . However, it’s accepted (and expected) in informal language.

The students were asked to fill out the questionnaire. (Formal) We asked the students to fill out the questionnaire. (Informal)

Phrasal Verbs

When using formal language in your B2 writing, it is also recommended to replace phrasal verbs (proper verbs that are followed by one or more prepositions and act as a single verb).

It was something the protestors could endure . (Formal) It was something the protestors could put up with . (Informal)

Vocabulary Choice

Formal language tends to use longer, more complex vocabulary. Sometimes it is not recommended to use this type of vocabulary with informal language (depending on what you’re writing) because it can confuse or distract your audience.

They needed assistance while recovering from the outcomes of the hurricane. (Formal) They needed help while recovering from the effects of the hurricane. (Informal)

Step 2: Write an introduction

The purpose of the introduction is simply to tell the reader what the essay is about.

You can start your essay by referring to the question that was asked “ University should be free for everyone. Do you agree or disagree? ” and writing it in your own words . It is also worth mentioning the three points you are going to describe.

Introduction : There are many factors to consider when deciding if the university should be free or not. Among these are taxes, equality of opportunity, and the economy.

You can use phrases such as:

This essay will discuss … This essay will focus on … In order to discuss …, I will analyse …

Step 3: Main body paragraphs…

Main body paragraphs are the most important part of your essay so they should be the longest and one paragraph should comment on one point. See below:

Write about: 1. Taxes – the first paragraph should comment on “ taxes”  2. Opportunity – the second paragraph should comment on “ opportunity “ 3. …………………… (your own idea) – the third paragraph should comment on “economy”

In addition, every paragraph should start with a topic sentence, which is like an introduction to the paragraph and it tells the reader what exactly the paragraph is going to discuss.

Also, a good idea is to include different linking words/expressions to make sure that your ideas are well connected and in a logical order.

What is a topic sentence?

A topic sentence is the first sentence of a paragraph (which is also the most important )

A topic sentence essentially tells readers about the rest of the paragraph . If the topic sentence says “ Cats are very good pets for several reasons” , then every sentence after that needs to describe that subject.

For example:

Cats are very good pets for several reasons . (<=topic sentence / every sentence after it describes that subject =>) They are naturally good caregivers because they take care of their kittens, so they want to take care of their owners as well. Cats are quite clean, and if you train them to use a litter box, they require almost no cleanup in their areas.

What are the linking words/expressions?

These are words and expressions that help the text flow logically . These words act as signposts, helping the reader easily move from one idea to the next and see connections between sentences or paragraphs.

Linking words is especially useful when you want to indicate that you are going to explain something, provide an example use a time sequence, or present a contrasting point of view.

studying abroad essay b2

Between paragraphs:

To begin with, I would like to put forward […] The first possible action is, to improve physical education …[…] A second option would be. …  competitive attitudes that […]

Within a paragraph:

[…] which activity is better than the others. Another reason for not financing sports […]

You can see a model answer below:

First paragraph comment on  “Taxes” Paragraph 1: Firstly , a majority of people believe that a significant part of taxes should go to education. Opponents might say if someone can afford university, then he/she should pay for it. However , people with higher education have better wages and therefore pay higher income tax after graduation .

Second paragraph comment on “Opportunity ” Paragraph 2: Secondly, making university free for all, creates more opportunities for those from low-income backgrounds . Although they may still have difficulty meeting other costs such as accommodation , it makes the playing field more level.

Third paragraph comment on “….…… (your own idea)” : economy Paragraph 3: In addition , having an educated workforce is proven to help the economy grow. Namely , the more highly educated people there are, the higher the standard of living for everyone. Consequently , more people will be able to pay taxes to fund the education of future generations.

                  – topic sentence

                    – linking words/expressions

                    – interesting/topical vocabulary

Remember, you don’t have to tell the truth! The examiners won’t know, so if you don’t have experience or an opinion you can make something up!

Step 4: Conclusion

The conclusion comes at the end of your essay, it summarizes the main idea of the essay.  You need to write a clear, justified conclusion. You can’t just say, ‘I agree’, or ‘I disagree.’ Think of it like this: you need to convince the examiner that your conclusion is correct.

In conclusion, a university should be free for everyone. It makes economic sense and ultimately benefits all members of society.

                  – linking words/expressions

Make sure your paragraphs are connected to your conclusion!

B2 first (fce)  essay: example essays, fce essay sample 1.

In your English class you have been talking about the environment. Write an essay using all the notes and give reasons for your point of view.

Every country in the world has problems with pollution and damage to the environment. Do you think these problems can be solved?

Write about: 1. transport 2. rivers and seas 3. ………………………… (your own idea)

Student’s FCE Essay Answer:

DEVELOPMENT VS ENVIRONMENT

If we surf the web looking for pollution and environmental catastrophes, we will find out that every country in the world suffers them. This is a natural consequence of the struggle between development and environment.

If a country decided to live isolated from the rest of the world, living on what it can naturally grow and produce, it surely wouldn’t be highly polluted. But we all want exotic food and technological items from all over the world, so we have to pay the price.

Investing on electrical transport would benefit the environment a lot. Even more if this electricity came from a natural source of energy like wind, rivers and solar boards. It’s difficult to achieve this because petrol companies will fight against these actions.

We also have to take care of our rivers and seas. We all have heard about factories throwing highly toxic substances to rivers, without minimizing their poisoning effects. A really strict law should be applied to fine these factories and make them change their policy.

But what about ourselves? We also can do a lot! If, when possible, we bought larger packs of food, we would be producing less rubbish. And this is only an example!

FCE Essay Sample 2

In your English class you have been talking about the fashion industry. Write an essay using all the notes and giving reasons for your point of view.

Some people say the fashion industry has a bad effect on people’s lives. Do you agree?

Write about: 1. whether people’s appearance is important 2. the price of clothes 3. …………………… (your own idea)

The society we live today is characterised by technology in constant development, fast speed processes, information travelling and getting to people at a blink of an eye and a complex web of social networking. In this context, the fashion industry is becoming increasingly important and having a more and more paramount role in our lives.

On one hand, the fashion industry is undeniably a source of profit and income. It hires millions of people all over the world and generates millions of dollars every year. Furthermore, such profitable business is also believed to be able to spread and make known the culture of a people, encouraging and enhancing a better understanding of each other.

Nevertheless, for those who are neither impressed nor motivated by numbers and figures, the fashion industry is seen as one which segregates people, isolating those who not fit their laws and commands. It is stated that people place too much importance on appearance and the material, world, sadly true, and the fashion industry just spurs on such situation. Moreover, not only are the costs of fashion item unrealistically high, it is thought to be a money better spent on more pressing issues, such as poverty and hunger.

I do believe that the fashion industry, as it is today, has a harmful effect, because it values a minority of people in detriment to the majority. However, it has such a wide reach that, it put into a good use, it can save lives.

B2 First (FCE) Essay: FAQ

How long should a b2 essay be.

You need to answer the question with between 140-190 words.

If an answer is too long, you may get a lower score.   If you write 200 words, it’s not a problem. However, if you write 300 words, it’s a problem.

Should you do a plan?

Yes! You must make a plan to organise your essay writing . On the day of the exam, you will be stressed and feel pressure. A plan is your way of organising you text and your thoughts.

What happens if I write more than 190 words?

Nothing… Well, almost nothing. In the past for every 5 words extra, they took away a point, however, now they do not. It is not good to go over 190 words because of time, but you can. I wouldn´t write more than 200 words because they will probably lower the mark they give you for content. They will determine some of it to be unnecessary.

What counts as a complex language in the exam?

You MUST use complex language at B2 level . You must use attention-grabbing vocabulary and a variety of grammar structures. The passive voice, relative clauses, modal verbs, conditionals, reported speech and inversions all count as COMPLEX grammar forms and you must use them. Otherwise, you can address academic experts and pay someone to write your paper if you need help to write an essay for you.

Why Do You Want to Study Abroad? 6 Tips to Inspire Your Essay

APPLYING to study abroad is a tricky thing, especially when it comes to answering that all-important essay question: why do you want to study abroad?

It sounds like a simple enough query, but try to write an answer and you’ll quickly realise how difficult it is. You may want to study abroad so you can ‘broaden your horizons’ and ‘see the world’, but with so many millennials yearning to travel, these have become clichés. In this article, we’re going to give you some tips on how to write your personal statement, and cogently explain exactly why you want to study abroad to your new university.

studying abroad essay b2

1. Jot down ideas – and be honest

Write down every genuine reason you can think of as to why you are studying abroad – no matter how silly or generic they sound. Is it because you want to travel and have fun, to work in a city connected with your industry, or simply because you want to escape? Maybe you want to re-discover a culture or family roots, or study with a world-renowned academic. The reasons can be professional or personal, big or small. It’s important to know your motivations before you begin, even if you end up dressing them up a bit in the actual essay. If you really don’t know your reasons, it might be worth re-thinking things before you apply – studying abroad is serious business.

2. Root out the most important

Have you ever read something that seemed to be trying to make too many points, or discuss too many topics, at once? It can be confusing to read, and by the end, it doesn’t really feel like you’ve gotten very far. For this reason, it’s a good idea to open your answer with one main reason you have for studying abroad – the thing that really gets you feeling excited and driven – and let this be the thread that ties your whole answer together. If no one reason jumps out at you, try looking at your notes and see if any of them have similar themes: professional success, personal growth, academic discovery, feeling ‘at home’ in a particular culture, wanting to make a difference.

3. Get specific

By now, you’re hopefully feeling passionate about your answer – now it’s time to flesh it out.

Admissions officers already know students like to travel, experience new things and further their careers; they hear this all the time. What they really want to know is what makes this relevant to them. What’s the connection between your desires and their university? Answering this question well will help you stand out from the rest, which is important for popular courses.

For example, many fashion students would love to study in Paris, for obvious reasons. But if your ambition is to become a knitwear designer, and the Parisian university you’re applying for is renowned for its expertise in this area, you can make a specific connection between your ambitions and this unique opportunity. It highlights that you’ll be a good match for the university, and furthermore, that you’ve done your research.

Where you come from can be just as important as where you're going when making these links. For example, our contributor Monserrat draws a comparison between the chaotic cities of her home country, Mexico, and the well-designed cities of the Netherlands, both of which inspired her to study Urban Management & Development in Rotterdam. Again, this demonstrates a specific connection between her ambitions, the course she chose, and the location.

4. Show off

Admissions teams like details – they also like evidence. A student might say they are a knitwear enthusiast, but it’s even more impressive if they have work experience or achievements to back this up. If you have some of these, great! Make a list of any relevant accomplishments so you can weave them in (no pun intended) for added impact. This could include competitions, academic scores, grades, participation in events or exhibitions, work experience, volunteering, special training or even personal milestones. You don’t need to mention every achievement you’ve ever had, but if it reinforces a point you’re making, it makes sense to use it.

5. Put it into paragraphs

Writing your answer in clear, coherent and not-too-long paragraphs is very important. Nobody likes reading dense walls of text, or long-winded essays that take too long to get to the point. Start your essay strongly with a compelling 1-2 sentence introduction that goes straight for the topic in hand: the main reason why you want to study abroad . Then, explain and build your case in the following paragraphs using the notes and ideas you’ve gathered so far.

There is no one way of doing this, but one good piece of advice I’ve learned is this: you don’t have to write things in the right order. If you can’t think of an original opening line straight away, or are having trouble with a paragraph, just come back to it later. By then, you may have a better idea of what you want to say.

6. Draft, re-draft, and proofread!

Hopefully you know by now that it is usually a bad idea to submit a first draft of anything ; this definitely applies to your study abroad application. Unless you are a literary prodigy, you will most likely need to re-draft your essay at least once. Get as many people to read it as you can – parents, teachers, friends you trust – and heed their advice. If you’re writing it in a language other than your own, try getting a native speaker to look it over too. And, whatever you do, make 100% sure there are no mistakes at all in your writing. In the age of spellcheck, there really is no excuse.

#2.   Language as a Barrier

One of the biggest problems that many students face while studying abroad is the language that they are not fluent in. It is extremely important for one to learn the official language of the country that you have decided to move to in order to enjoy the benefits of having meaningful conversations.

Many times students have a lot of difficulty in speaking the native language or even understanding it. There are many cases in which teachers prefer to teach the entire lessons in the local language of the city. Therefore, it’s extremely important to have a good grasp of the language.

Living in a foreign country means you are completely on your own. All the work that you need to do, right from washing your clothes to doing all the household chores, all need to be done by yourself.

There are many students who have never lived out of their home for a long period of time and studying abroad requires them to have such experiences for the first time. Advantages and Disadvantages of Studying Abroad – IELTS Model Essay

With changing times, more and more students wish to move out of their native country to a completely new place where they can study among a bunch of students who are new to them. And this has certainly given a rise to the number of students moving abroad to study among them. While the idea of going out seems fun, is it actually true in real scenarios?

Elaborate – IELTS Model Essay Answer

There are many benefits of studying abroad but according to me, I believe the number of demerits of studying abroad is more than its advantages. Starting with knowing about its benefits, it feels great to study abroad. When one starts studying abroad, they become more independent as a person. This is because everything, right from all the household chores to outdoor things needs to be done on one’s own and this helps an individual to become a better version of himself/herself. They learn to be better and dependent on themselves. Living abroad allows an individual to learn different foreign languages in order to converse with their peers and fellow classmates. This further helps them to broaden their horizon, that by learning new languages and living for a period of 2-3 years in a foreign country, they tend to learn new cultures and how things are done differently in their country. They learn about their customs, traditions, and values.

Talk about the Disadvantages

But despite having so many advantages, the number of disadvantages succeed them. Though it is true that students get to learn new languages while living in a foreign country, with that comes the possibility of isolation and loneliness. There are many students who face difficulty while speaking in languages other than their native ones and while learning these languages, there are times when they are not able to converse fluently and swiftly as other students. And this leads to the different language barriers that arise among them. Thus, these children tend to spend most of their time alone without anyone’s company which can further lead to failure in examination and also depression.

Move towards Conclusion of the IELTS Essay Model Answer

Another demerit of studying abroad is that one has to do all of their work on their own which can be quite tiring at times and can lead to fatigue. This can also affect the students psychologically and they can suffer from various mental illnesses. Further, living abroad for a long time alone without being with anyone from your family or loved one can lead to homesickness and even lead to depression among many students. Along with this, studying abroad can be extremely expensive as compared to the cost one bears when he/she decided to study in their native country.

In conclusion, I believe it’s always better to study in one’s own country while being in the company of your loved ones and it should be encouraged more than moving out to study.

studying abroad essay b2

Engnovate logo with text

Band 5+: Compare studying abroad with studying in your home country, expressing your opinion on which is better, and providing personal experiences and reasons to support your view.

Its widely accepted by many individuals that studying abroad has a huge number of opportunities, however there is still a lot of other people who contradict to that idea. Education is a crucial topic to many which is why people are extremely sensitive about this. In this essay I will discuss different aspects of studying abroad and in your homeland and talk about my own thoughts.

From my personal point of view, studying abroad helps individuals to experience new things in life that they could not have gained in their motherland. In addition, people get to know others from different countries improving their social skills while learning about different cultures. To exemplify, on a 4 week summer school program to Germany I got close to German culture and upgraded my language skills by traveling with amazing people who I have met there.

On the other hand, being homesick is an extremely common phenomenon among people who study abroad. Other than that, if a person had traveled to a particular country before, it would have been easier for them to get used to it, however it is a rare possibility. For example, latest studies show that 7 out of 100 people go back to their homeland and continue their studies online due to homesickness.

To conclude, despite the fact that studying abroad is a better option to those who like being on their own, it would be a challenging period for those who are very close with their sorrounding. It is usually way harder to go abroad when people face issues such as language barrier and culture shock. Inspite that, there is a greater number of possibilities in specific countries depending on a person’s major.

Introduction

New cultural experiences, opportunities to learn new languages, travel opportunities, enhancement of employment opportunities, arguments against studying abroad, works cited.

Studying abroad refers to the act of pursuing primary, secondary, or post-secondary education in a foreign country. In the United States, foreign students comprise approximately 1 percent of the student population (Byram 34). Many students study aboard especially for their post-secondary education that includes university and postgraduate studies. In certain cases, students enroll for short study programs.

For instance, many institutions conduct academic exchange programs that aim to expose students to new cultures and educational environments (Cressey 52). The issue of studying abroad has been debated among experts in the academic field for a long time.

Opponents argue that it is expensive and introduces students to new cultural experiences that alter their perspectives and values in negative ways. On the other hand, proponents argue that studying abroad is good for cultural exposure and new educational experiences. Students should study abroad because it exposes them to new cultural experiences, provides travel opportunities, increases their chances of employment, and expands their perspectives of different cultures and countries (Cressey 22).

One of the advantages of studying abroad is exposure to new cultures and learning environments (Byram 37). Globalization has increased competition for employment opportunities among graduates in international labor markets. As a result, it has initiated changes in learning approaches because of the need to work in different cultures and among people who speak different languages (Cressey 62).

It is necessary for students to study abroad in order for them to gain cross-cultural communication skills, learn different languages, and get international exposure. A common challenge among international workers is ineffective communication due to language barriers (Williamson 29). For instance, American graduates who secure employment in countries such as China and Japan find it difficult to communicate with natives because of language barrier.

In order to work in such countries, learning native languages is a necessity because few people speak English. Studying in China is an opportunity for American students to learn the language and culture of the Japanese. The global economy has numerous challenges that can be overcome by studying abroad. Statistics show that only 10 percent of American students study abroad at one point in their academic lives (Williamson 30).

Experiencing new cultures and environments pushes students out of their comfort zones and facilitates acquisition of skills that are necessary for the attainment of success in the global economy (Byram 39). Countries have different educational systems that encourage diversity through cross-cultural interactions. Exposure to different cultures is important in eradicating ingrained stereotypes and misconceptions about certain races and cultures.

Interacting with people from other cultures equips students with skills that are important in solving challenges that developing countries face (Williamson 33). For instance, foreign students who study in Africa experience the challenges that poor people face. Examples of these challenges include poverty, hunger, and diseases. This increases their compassion and willingness to offer viable solutions to solve the challenges.

The most effective way of learning a new language is through interaction with people who speak that language. In countries that do not use English as the official language, foreign students are required to study the language used by the educational systems of those countries.

Even though some programs are offered in English, students learn local languages in order to ensure proper communication and interaction with other students. One of the advantages of studying a new language is the opportunities it offers with regard to communication, interactions, and socialization with natives (Williamson 39). It is easy to learn a new language through interactions with people who use it.

Studying abroad offers students an opportunity to travel to new countries and have new experiences that expand their perceptions of the world (Williamson 41). Foreign students get the opportunity to visit places that they could not have otherwise visited in their lives had they not traveled abroad to study. Some study programs include field trips that allow students to master their surroundings.

In addition to travel experiences, students make new friends because they interact with both natives and foreign students from other countries (Cressey 72). International media outlets usually present distorted images of certain countries by focusing on the challenges that their citizens face such as poverty, hunger, and diseases.

Studying aboard equips students with firsthand experience regarding the lifestyles and economic endeavors of such countries and as such gain new perspectives and ideas (Williamson 46). One of the challenges that American students face is a constricted view of the world. The United States is the largest economy in the world that offers innumerable opportunities to its citizens.

Studying abroad offers American students an opportunity to live in countries that do not offer as many opportunities to citizens as their country does. Such experiences change their perspectives regarding their culture and the cultures of other countries. Cross-cultural interactions shift or validate some of their perspectives and beliefs.

Students who study abroad increase their opportunities for employment especially by international organizations. Employers are more attracted to individuals who possess international experience that is gained form living in different cultures and countries (McKeown 54).

Examples of job opportunities that require international experience include international relations, diplomacy, medicine, and governance. Students should use their experiences in foreign countries to gain communication skills and other abilities that will give them competitive edge in the labor market. Many students choose to study abroad because of the high quality of education offered in certain educational systems (Cressey 63).

Students from developing countries travel to developed countries for higher education because of the high quality of education offered by the systems in those countries. Another aspect that increases employment opportunities is the creation of professional networks during the study period (Williamson 73). Students form professional networks that they use after graduation to find employment.

Studying abroad increases students’ their opportunities to volunteer, find internships, and work part-time (McKeown 55). Many institutions help students find internships and work placements after completing their programs. Forming professional networks gives students an edge over students who complete their studies in their home countries.

Opponents argue that studying abroad exposes foreign students to homesickness, culture shock, and new cultures that might change their perspectives in negative ways (McKeown 58). In addition, they argue that it is expensive and students might enroll in institutions whose educational systems are not as rigorous as those in their home countries. Even though foreign students experience homesickness, the opportunity to study abroad helps to develop independence and learn how to live without influence from their families.

The process of seeking foreign educational opportunities involves a through scrutiny of the educational systems of different institutions. Therefore, before students enroll to foreign institutions, they are usually aware of the value and quality of their educational systems (McKeown 64).

In many cases, students who study abroad receive government grants and scholarships that reduce financial pressure. On the other hand, the quality of education that students receive is far more important than the cost incurred. The benefits of studying abroad outweigh the disadvantages. Finally, the value of international exposure and acquisition of skills that enhance cross-cultural communication overshadows the cost of studying abroad.

Students usually have many options with regard to pursuing their post-secondary education. One of the options is to study abroad. Some of the benefits of studying abroad include exposure to new cultures and educational experiences, enhancement of employment opportunities, and creation of professional networks that are important for career development.

Opponents argue that studying abroad is expensive and posses the potential to affect the cultural perspectives of students negatively. In addition, they claim that students might be subjected to inferior educational systems that fail to equip them with quality academic and professional experience to navigate their careers. An important step in choosing an institution is a through scrutiny of its educational system.

Therefore, it is difficult to enroll into an inferior educational system. On the other hand, many governments and institutions offer scholarships to students. Therefore, those who cannot afford to pay for their study abroad can apply for scholarships and government grants.

Students who study abroad increase their opportunities for employment especially by international organizations because of their experiences with different cultures and cross-cultural communication skills. Another benefit of studying abroad is the opportunity for international travel. Students visit other countries and cultures that facilitated the development of new perspectives. Finally, students get an opportunity to learn new languages that give them competitive edge in different labor markets.

Preparing for finals

By Arden S.

June 1, 2024

This month has been filled with essays, quizzes, and preparation for final exams. The grading system (or should I say, marking system, as the Australians would) is much different than in the United States. First off, you’re typically graded on only a few assignments. For example, one of my classes was graded on participation, and just two essays. Back home, I generally have more assignments to “buffer” my grade, and have “checks” along the way to make sure I’m understanding the content. Here, you’re completely responsible for your own grade and comprehension, and have to make sure you’re dedicating enough time to perform well on exams. That leads me to my second point, final exams here make up a significant portion of your final grade. It’s not uncommon to see one exam worth 40-50% of the score you receive on your transcript. This can be unnerving, stressful, and frustrating, but the way assignments are graded is also different. In the US, anything below a 60% is a fail, and anything below a 70% is generally considered content you didn’t understand, and generally frowned upon. Here, anything above a 50% is considered a pass, and any grade above a 75% is the equivalent of an A-. It is also extremely uncommon to receive a grade above an 85%, even if there is no negative feedback left on an assignment.

It definitely took some adjusting to the new grading system, and becoming familiar with receiving grades in the 70s range, but it is important to remind yourself that you’re still performing well. The same principle as always applies, no matter the grading system: you have to study as well as you can for exams, put in the same effort for background readings, and always proofread your essays!

How I Spent My Summer Vacation Essay

It’s the month of May and the most anticipated time has finally arrived. Do you know why students wait all year for May? It’s summer vacation and your family has planned a trip to a hill station in Himachal Pradesh. Well, this is just a common summer vacation plan most families plan for, but I am sure you might also have a somewhat similar plan for your summer vacation. So, today, we will provide samples of how I spent my summer vacation essay in English.

Sample 1: How I Spend My Summer Vacation Essay

This summer vacation I visited the Ram Temple in Ayodhya with my family and cousins. We booked the Vande Bharat tickets and started our holy journey from New Delhi Railway Station. It was an 11-hour-long journey and was full of excitement. I have never experienced a journey so beautiful.

Throughout our journey, we chanted the ‘Jai Shree Ram’ mantra and sang holy songs. When we reached the Lucknow Central Station, the Ticket Collector told us that we’d reached halfway.
It took us another 5 hours to reach the holy city of Ayodhya. My brother and I wanted to explore the city, so we stepped outside. Then we headed to the Ram Mandir. The temple was huge and very beautiful. It was decorated with colourful lights and flowers. There were many people there, all looking very happy and excited.

Inside the temple, we saw the idol of Lord Ram. It was adorned with beautiful jewels made of gold, diamond, and silver! The priests were singing bhajans, and the atmosphere was very peaceful. We prayed and spent some time sitting quietly, feeling the divine presence. My parents told me stories about Lord Ram, and I felt very happy to learn more about him.

After visiting the temple, we explored the city of Ayodhya. We visited other historical places and temples. Each place had its own unique story and charm. We also enjoyed the local food, which was very tasty. My favourite was the special sweets they made in Ayodhya.

Then, after coming back from the trip, I completed my homework and drafted a study plan.

Sample 2: How I Spend My Summer Vacation Essay

This summer vacation, I planned to work to improve my physical and mental health. Close to my home, there is a fitness centre I joined this summer, where I was assigned a personal fitness trainer. She was a qualified trainer who asked me about my goals and drafted a fitness and diet routine accordingly.  Initially, I took a 1 month- subscription, as I was not sure how good or bad it would turn out to be. The first week was very challenging as I had to work out for 2 hours straight and then practice yoga for 30 minutes. Every day after coming from the fitness centre, I used to complete my homework and read the newspaper.

In one week, I was able to do 20 pushups in one set and I wanted to set the bar high. So, I planned on doing 40 pushups before completing 1 month at the fitness center. The trainers were very helpful and taught me the right way to do each exercise. They made sure I was safe and enjoying myself. They also encouraged me and made me feel confident.

One of the best parts of joining the fitness centre was making new friends. There were many kids my age, and we quickly became friends. We exercised together, cheered each other on, and had a lot of fun. We even played games like tag and basketball in the centre’s sports area. Having friends around made exercising even more enjoyable.

Joining the fitness centre was a fantastic experience. It helped me become stronger, healthier, and more confident. I made new friends and learned a lot about staying fit and healthy. I am grateful for the opportunity and look forward to continuing my fitness journey.

How I Spend My Summer Vacation Essay: Sample 3

This summer vacation, I planned a trip to Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh with my family. My holiday homework assignments from math, science, and English. I decided to finish my homework early so that I could enjoy the rest of my vacation without any worries.

Every morning, I dedicated a few hours to studying and completing my assignments. My mom and dad helped me whenever I needed it. They explained difficult concepts and made learning fun. By the end of the first week, I had completed most of my homework. This made me feel very accomplished and ready to enjoy my vacation fully.

After finishing my homework, my parents planned a trip to a hill station in Himachal Pradesh. I was very excited because I had never visited a hill station before. We packed our bags with warm clothes, as it was cooler in the hills, and set off on our journey.
We booked train tickets, and the journey was amazing. As we reached Shimla, I was amazed to see the mountains, and the scenery became more and more beautiful. We saw tall trees, flowing rivers, and even some waterfalls. The air was fresh and cool, and I enjoyed every moment of the drive. We stopped at several viewpoints to take pictures and enjoy the breathtaking views.

When we reached the hill station, I was in awe of its beauty. The town was surrounded by green hills and tall pine trees. Our hotel was cosy and offered a stunning view of the mountains. The people there were very friendly and welcoming.

Every day was an adventure. We visited many tourist spots like waterfalls, temples, and parks. One day, we went for a hike in the forest. It was a little tiring but very exciting. We saw different kinds of birds and even spotted some monkeys playing in the trees.

The trip to Dharamshala was fun and educational. I learned about the local culture and traditions. We visited some old temples and my parents told me interesting stories about the history of the place. I also learned about different types of plants and animals that are found in the hills.
This is how I spent my summer vacation. I completed my holiday homework, stayed disciplined throughout the trip, and spent quality time with my family.

Ans: This summer vacation, my family planned a trip to Sikkim, which is one of the most beautiful and peaceful states in India. This small state, located between the Himalayas, is home to just 5 lakh Indians and is renowned for its rich biodiversity. We booked flights from New Delhi to Gangtok and after landing, I would feel the fresh atmosphere around me. People in Sikkim speak English, Nepali, Sikkimese (Bhutia), Leptcha, and Hindi, and it was very exciting to explore places that I’ve only seen on the National Geographic Channel.

Ans: This summer, I visited a famous hill station; Nainital with my family. It is a small town in the mountains of Uttarakhand, India. We booked a traveller and the journey was long but very exciting. As we drove up the winding roads, I saw tall trees, green hills, and cool streams flowing down the mountains. We also visited a place called Snow View Point. We went there by a ropeway, which is like a cable car that goes up the mountain. From the top, I could see the snow-covered peaks of the Himalayas. It looked like a picture from a storybook!

By Natasha Singer

I spent the last week talking with university officials, teachers and high school seniors about the dreaded college admissions essay.

I cover education technology at The Times. And I’ve been thinking a lot about how artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT, which can manufacture school essays and other texts, might reshape the college application process.

I was particularly interested to learn whether admissions officials were rejiggering their essay questions — or even reconsidering personal essays altogether.

Amid a deluge of high school transcripts and teacher recommendations, admissions officers often use students’ writing samples to identify applicants with unique voices, experiences, ideas and potential. How might that change now that many students are using A.I. chatbots to brainstorm topics, generate rough drafts and hone their essays?

To find out, I contacted admissions officials at more than a dozen large state universities, Ivy League schools and small private colleges, including Juan Espinoza , the director of undergraduate admissions at Virginia Tech.

Right now, he told me, many universities are still trying to figure out how the A.I. technologies work and what they mean for the admissions process.
