research internship japan

UTRIP stands for the "University of Tokyo Research Internship Program." This program was launched by the Graduate School of Science (GSS) of the University of Tokyo (one of the world's leading research-education universities) as part of its campaign begun in June 2010 for promoting the internationalization of the GSS by inviting talented young students from abroad. UTRIP is an intensive summer research program targeted at undergraduates who have a keen interest in pursuing an M.S. or Ph.D. degree in the future. During the program, the participants receive intensive instruction and guidance on conducting research from renowned faculty members belonging to the GSS's five departments of physics, astronomy, chemistry, earth & planetary science, and biological sciences.

The program is open to students who are currently enrolled in the second or a later year at an accredited college or university outside of Japan, and who are majoring in a natural science or related field. The program also includes an excursion outside of Tokyo as well as a short course on the Japanese language and culture.

UTRIP is a gateway to pursuing an advance degree and experiencing academic life at UTokyo. Take this opportunity to get a head-start for challenging the rigors of graduate study in the natural sciences.

The MIT-Japan Program empowers MIT students and faculty to advance knowledge and solve the world’s great challenges by connecting them with leading researchers, companies, and other partners in Japan. Founded in 1981 by Professor Richard Samuels, the MIT-Japan Program prepares MIT students to be global citizens by training and giving them a first-hand look at knowledge creation in Japan. The Program offers students opportunities to work and conduct research at leading Japanese universities, companies, and reserach institutions. MIT students can also study abroad and earn transfer credit at University of Tokyo (Course 2, 3) and Tokyo Tech (Course 22) in Japan. The ULVAC-Hayashi Seed Fund facilitates dozens of research collaborations between MIT faculty and their Japanese counterparts.

Our approach to collaboration is grounded in delivering bi-directional value: contribute to the research, education, and innovation while providing opportunities for MIT students to gain fluency in navigating different cultural contexts.

MIT-Japan プログラムの歴史

  • 1981年にリチャード・サミュエルズ教授(MIT政治学)が本プログラムを設立。以来、毎年役30余名のMITの学生を日本の企業、研究所、大学へ送り出している。
  • 1995年にMISTI( MIT International Science and Technology Initiatives )という組織が形成され、本プログラムの他にチャイナプログラムが加わる。

This year we celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the first Japanese student who graduated from MIT. In 1874, Mr. Eichiro Honma, from Fukuoka, Japan graduated with a degree in civil engineering. Honma’s MIT Thesis: "Design of an Iron Warren Girder Railroad Bridge" laid the foundation of his career in Japan helping to build bridges in his home country.

1st call of 2022"NII International Internship Program" Guideline for Candidates

The NII International Internship Program is an exchange activity with students from institutions with which NII has concluded a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) agreement. This incentive program aims at giving interns the opportunity for professional and personal development by engaging in research activities under the guidance and supervision of NII researchers.

This FY2022 1st call establishes internship stays in Tokyo, after two years (FY2020, FY2021) of restrictions due to the COVID-19 virus pandemic. Nevertheless, note that current still unstable conditions related to COVID-19 epidemic requires special measures. Refer to paragraph 10. and 11. below for more information.

1. Target candidates:

The NII Internship Program is open to Master's and PhD students who are currently enrolled at one of the partner institutions that have signed an MOU agreement with NII.

Students who have already obtained the Doctor of Philosophy degree are ineligible for the NII International Internship Program. If accepted, candidates are expected to maintain their enrolment status at their home institutions for the full duration of their Internships.

2. Application procedure:

  • Consult with your supervisor and your home institution as to their own internal procedures for handling applications, and inform them of your intention to apply.
  • Refer to the list of available research topics .
  • We strongly recommend candidates to make a contact with NII supervisors whom they would like to conduct research project. (e-mail correspondence etc.).
  • Questions regarding any of these topics should be directed to the NII project supervisor who proposed them. For other questions, please contact your home institution or the NII International Affairs and Education Support Team <nii-internship[at]nii.ac.jp>.
  • Choose up to three topics out of the list of Research topics.
  • Fill out the NII International Internship Program application form .
  • Attach your CV, indicating clearly any and all past employment and educational history.
  • If your application is supported by your home institution, it is then forwarded to NII.
  • Note that no direct application from candidates is accepted.

Please note that the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) maintains a list of foreign entities with which it has security concerns. Candidates currently or formerly associated with institutions or companies on this list will be subject to additional screening, which could result in their being deemed inadmissible to the program.

Please refer to https://www.meti.go.jp/english/press/2022/0310_002.html

Although in principle NII Internship projects could potentially serve in fulfilment of the candidates' degree requirements at their home institutions, this is not guaranteed by NII. Students seeking an internship at NII in fulfilment of their own institution's degree requirements (such as a co-supervised Master's project or other project) should consult with their supervisor before applying.

Partner institutions

  • Collect application forms and after the selection, send them to NII by e-mail .
  • MoU institutions may send a ranked list of up to two applicants meeting the institution's best standards of academic performance and research potential.
  • Note that NII researchers may not necessarily give priority to the top-ranked candidates when deciding which interns they are willing to supervise. Other reasons for non-selection could include the ineligibility of a candidate due to government restrictions, competitive selection, or other limits on the total number of interns that NII is prepared to receive.

3. Application deadline:

Applications must be received at NII by May 27th, 2022, at 17:00 JST Your home institution may set an earlier deadline. Please consult with your home institution for details.

4. Selection:

Screening of candidates is conducted by each NII supervisor first, then final selection is made by GLO and NII directors meeting.

5. Notification:

Notification of successful candidates will be made around late June, 2022. NII will notify the contact person of each partner institution.

Important : acceptance as an NII Internship student is subject to the condition that the student works on the approved project topic, and complies with NII and Japanese government regulations. In the event that these conditions are not respected, NII may take appropriate action that may include the termination of their internship.

6. Sojourn expenses:

5,700 JPY per day as sojourn expenses will be covered by NII while intern students are staying at NII. Medical insurance will also be provided. Transportation expenses are in principle not paid. Possible expenses due to epidemic quarantine and medical tests are in principle not supported by GLO.

7. Overseas travel insurance:

NII will provide medical insurance for internship students at no cost, which covers students in most situations (except for pre-existing / chronic conditions, dental care, vaccinations, and certain other conditions). Under the terms of the insurance program, students must arrive in Japan at most one day prior to the commencement of their internship, and leave Japan no more than one day after their internship ends.

We recommend that interns consider whether they may need other types of insurance, and if so, arrange it before arriving in Japan. Examples include travel insurance to cover the cost of flight cancellations, lost baggage, and so on.

Important : by Japanese law any visitor residing in Japan for more than three months must make contributions to the national health insurance program. Internship students are liable for payment of an insurance fee of approximately 1000 JPY per month to the local government of their residence. Students must follow the necessary administrative payment procedures at their local municipal office.

8. Final evaluation:

At the end of their internship, students are expected to submit an NII International Internship Program Report outlining the outcomes of their project. In writing their reports, interns should take care to respect any restrictions on confidential information or on intellectual property that may have been required by NII or their home institution. After the completion of the internship period and the submission of their report, NII will issue a certificate of completion.

9. Time frame:

Interns accepted for this call should arrive before end of March 2023. Exceptional cases should be discussed beforehand. The duration of the internship should be also discussed with NII supervisors. The internship activities should be for a period of 60 to 180 days excluding travelling days. A minimum of 2 months stay is compulsory.

Visa application procedure will be instructed to the successful candidates after the selection.

10. COVID-19 Vaccination:

All internship students coming to NII must have been vaccinated as the Japanese Government recommends it in order not to be subject to quarantine at your arrival in Japan. As of April 2022, this involves three shots of one of the vaccines admitted by the Japanese Government. Please refer to https://www.mofa.go.jp/ca/fna/page24e_000317.html

It may be the case that further shots are required by the Japanese Government.

All students must send to NII the official documents acknowledging that they have been vaccinated. We will not admit students that do not send us these documents.

11. Consequences of COVID-19 epidemic:

Due to the unstable status of the COVID-19 epidemic, be aware that it might be the case that the Japanese Government installs further containment periods. We want to inform you that if the situation would become as serious as to threaten your life, we might require you to repatriate to your university or your origin country. Under such situation, the internship student research work would continue as a remote on-line internship.

Internship experience interview report: sarin kittisares.

April 10, 2024

Intern research develops into research paper adopted by international conference

research internship japan

Researcher, Visual Intelligence Research Laboratories Sarin Kittisares

Born in Thailand. Sarin joined NEC after completing a doctorate program at a graduate school in Japan in 2023. During his school years, Sarin majored in mechanical engineering and studied exoskeleton suits for assisting the physical movement of the elderly and the disabled. After joining NEC, he has been working primarily on technologies to remotely control robots using AI.

Joining AI control internship program to expand knowledge in mechanical engineering

What got me to apply for the NEC internship was the WISE Program (Doctoral Program for World-leading Innovative & Smart Education), which I was participating in. I needed to participate in two internships to complete this program, so I chose NEC as one of the internships among the available programs. The research topic that I applied for then was AI-driven robot control. I also used to study robots, but it was more focused on the hardware design of exoskeletons back then. Although I had also taken AI and programming in classes at the university, I had no real-world experience, so I decided to give it a challenge since I felt that it was a good opportunity to expand my horizon. Before I started my internship, I discussed with the NEC employees what theme to work on. While using AI-driven control was already decided, I still needed to choose one application from several options, including automated guided vehicles (AGVs), drones, and hydraulic excavators. Among such applications, I chose AGV used at warehouses for my research theme. The term of my internship was about two months. I arrived at the office around 10:00 and left around 16:30 (Note 1). While teleworking was possible, I went to the lab relatively often because I needed to work on the robot and collect data from the experiments. I worked from home when analyzing the experiment data. Half of the time I worked in the office while the other half I worked remotely.

  • Note 1: Work hours for interns are adjustable depending on the individual’s commuting situations and other personal circumstances. Work hours for international students are restricted to 28 hours per week.

Participating in collaborative research as part-time employee after completing internship

The research project I was involved in during his internship was one concerning Risk-Sensitive Stochastic Control Technology , which is currently covered in a press release. This technology adopts a model that predicts control errors to balance risk and reward. I was engaged in the research of this error model. First, I wrote a program to control the robot using a gamepad, and then I conducted experiments where commands for different types of movements were sent to the robot using the gamepad. I compared the ideal path and the actual path of the robot and found  that the angle of caster wheels has a huge impact on the movement of the robot, so I focused on this part in building a machine learning model that accurately predicts errors. I managed to complete the model during internship. Then, during our last meeting, the team leader suggested that we should publish our results at a conference, and I agreed. Upon starting the research again, I signed a part-time employment contract with NEC in order to access NEC’s data for work. The research paper I wrote was presented at the IFAC World Congress 2023, one of the largest international conferences in the field of automatic control (Note 2).

Introducing a day of my internship (Teleworking day)

Introducing a day of my internship (office day), reaching for the goal in a trustworthy research environment.

I was thinking of employment in the industry after my doctorate from the start, but when I was just about to start job hunting, I heard from my supervisor from the internship that NEC was going to start recruiting. After exchanging information about the research I was working on at the time, I applied for the position and got an offer after a very quick screening. I happily accepted the offer and decided to join NEC. I was able to work on a clear and fruitful research theme during internship, with regular support from a mentor. I had positive feelings toward NEC’s solid corporate climate, and it also meant a lot to me that people around me were helpful and created a relaxed atmosphere. Since I studied at a Japanese graduate school, I communicate with other people in Japanese within the organization, but I can also communicate in English with researchers. Even now, whenever I can't find the words to express myself in Japanese, I can use English, so there is hardly any occasion that I feel inconvenienced in terms of language. My goal is to create society where the elderly can live a healthy active life. I hope to contribute to assisting mobility and reducing labor-intensive workloads at factories and warehouses. My research originates from wanting to help my mother, who started having problems walking with age. Thailand is also undergoing societal aging like is the case in Japan. I hope my robotics technologies can contribute to a society where people with disabilities and the elderly can live comfortably.

2024-25 Fulbright: Alice Young

Color portrait of Alice Young on a red campus background

Alice Young of Omaha, who will graduate from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln on May 18 with a Bachelor of Arts in psychology, has earned a Fulbright U.S. Student Program award to conduct research in Japan.

A Regents Scholar and member of the University Honors Program, Young is a psychology major on the pre-medicine track. Her research focuses on end-of-life care and cultural perspectives in the United States and Japan. For her Fulbright project, she plans to survey patients at urban hospitals and nursing homes to uncover attitudes toward advanced directives and end-of-life care.

“Both the United States’ and Japan’s elderly populations struggle with depression, and end-of-life planning can be daunting,” she said. “For care providers and advocates, before aiming to implement advanced directives more broadly, it is important to first understand societal and cultural attitudes.”

After data collection and analysis, she plans to publish a paper to inform policymakers in both countries.

As an undergraduate, Young has conducted research with the Violence Intervention for Survivors of Trauma and Abuse Lab, investigating how choices motivate behavior such as drinking or sexual aggression. For her Honors thesis, she researched music and perceived stress.

“Realizing I was less stressed in one lab course than in another, and thus producing higher quality lab reports there, I analyzed the differences,” she said. “One teaching assistant had played music in the room, and I found myself in a much better mood afterward.”

Young has also served as a teaching assistant in chemistry and, as a Borlaug-Ruan Scholar, presented a paper on food insecurity in Liberia to world leaders.

Young’s undergraduate experience provided opportunities to explore cross-cultural connections with Japan and motivated her Fulbright application. She honed her language skills through four years of study, cultural immersion, and friendship with Japanese international students.

Young also worked in health and emergency medicine roles, earning CPR and EMT licenses. As part of her Fulbright experience, she hopes to volunteer in a hospital setting in Japan.

“Working closely with Japanese researchers will increase credibility, trust and rapport, as well as ensuring a culturally appropriate approach to research collection,” she said.

Upon returning to the United States, Young plans to attend medical school to become a psychiatrist, aiming to predominantly serve elderly patients.

“Given increased life expectancies in the U.S., mental health in the elderly merits attention,” she said. “I will continue my research, working to implement ways hospitals and nursing homes can adjust protocols and environments to better serve elders’ mental health.”

The Fulbright program, the U.S. government’s flagship international educational exchange program, is supported by an annual appropriation made by Congress to the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, as well as partner countries around the world. Fulbright recipients are selected based on academic or professional achievement, as well as demonstrated leadership potential in their fields. The program operates in more than 160 countries worldwide.

At Nebraska, the Office of Undergraduate Research and Fellowships advises and nominates undergraduate candidates for 30 supported scholarships and fellowships. To learn more, students and campus community members should contact Courtney Santos, director of undergraduate research and fellowships, at [email protected] .

Japan survey finds 30% of student interns experience sexual harassment

The proportion of recent graduates in Japan who have worked as interns have experienced sexual harassment during their internship was 30.1%, according to a labor ministry survey, up 4.6 percentage points from the previous survey in fiscal 2020.

About 30% of recent graduates in Japan who have worked as interns have experienced sexual harassment during their internship, a labor ministry survey has shown.

The survey results were presented at a ministry panel meeting Friday. Experts attending the meeting pointed out a "gap in awareness" between students and companies. The ministry plans to accelerate efforts to combat such sexual harassment.

In the survey, the most common type of sexual harassment against job seekers was "sexual jokes and teasing," followed by "persistent invitations to dinner and dates."

The survey also found that 26.1% of women who took pregnancy, childbirth or parental leave in the past five years suffered "maternity harassment," and 24% of men who applied for parental leave faced "paternity harassment."

The ministry also released the results of a survey on women's participation and advancement. Among companies with 100 to 299 employees, which are obliged to draw up plans for promoting female participation in the workforce, the proportion of those with such plans nearly doubled from the previous survey in 2018 to 76.9%.

Among companies with 30 to 99 employees, which are obliged to make efforts to draw up such plans, the proportion stood at 15.2%.

The proportion of recent graduates in Japan who have worked as interns have experienced sexual harassment during their internship was 30.1%, according to a labor ministry survey, up 4.6 percentage points from the previous survey in fiscal 2020. | GETTY IMAGES

How To Stand Out In The Ivy League During Your Freshman Year

Harvard College

This spring, many students felt the relief and exuberance that comes with an acceptance letter from one’s dream school. Many students attending Ivy League and other top universities are valedictorians and leaders in their high school communities; they excelled throughout their high school careers and graduated with the accolades to prove it. Yet, these students are often in for a rude awakening when they arrive on campus. Though they were exceptional at their high schools, they are a dime a dozen in the Ivy League. This realization can cause many students to feel imposter syndrome and wonder how they can stand out and make an impression on their professors and peers in such a competitive environment.

The more that students prepare themselves for this adjustment, the better. Standing out in college is a different endeavor than standing out in high school—it requires time, intentionality, and a willingness to be uncomfortable and challenge yourself. Most importantly, it takes practice, and if students seek to hone this skill from their first semester on campus, they will set themselves up for success for the next four years.

For students preparing for their first semester in college, here are five strategies to navigate the transition into the Ivy League with confidence, purpose, and distinction:

1. Make your voice heard in the classroom

At Ivy League and many other top schools, faculty-to-student ratios and class sizes tend to be small, allowing greater opportunity for you to establish yourself in the classroom and engage with your professors directly. Many students are weighed down by self-doubt and the desire to avoid making mistakes in their first semester, and as such, they are reluctant to raise their hands or offer their input. But one of the best ways to establish connections with professors is to use your voice in the classroom—college is about learning and growing, so don’t be afraid to get a question wrong or develop your ideas through conversation. Doing so will allow you to connect with others in class, build your intellectual skill set, and demonstrate your curiosity and earnest desire to learn.

2. Engage in activities outside of the classroom

Beyond academics, the Ivy League is known for vibrant opportunities to learn and connect with others outside of the classroom. Whether you're interested in student government, the performing arts, guest lectures, community service, or intramural athletics, there’s an opportunity to explore your passions. Join clubs and organizations that align with your interests and values, and consider taking on leadership roles to showcase your initiative and organizational skills. Engaging in extracurricular activities will not only enrich your college experience but also afford you the opportunity to get to know people outside of your major or residence hall.

Ghost Of Tsushima Is Already Flooded With Negative Reviews On Steam

Wwe smackdown results, winners and grades with stratton vs. belair, biden trump debates what to know as trump pushes for 2 more faceoffs, 3. cultivate your network.

One of the most valuable assets you'll gain during your time in the Ivy League is your network of peers, professors, and mentors. Take the time to connect with your classmates and professors, attend faculty office hours, and engage in meaningful discussions. One of the best ways to build your network is to simply put yourself out there—a student’s college years are the prime opportunity to connect with even the most distinguished scholars in their field, as they not only likely have connections through their institution, but professors (even at other universities) are more likely to respond to students who reach out for their advice. If one knowledgeable person doesn’t respond or have the bandwidth to advise you on a particular project or query, move on to the next person on your list!

4. Pursue Research, Internship, and Study Abroad Opportunities

The Ivy League offers unparalleled access to research, internship, and study abroad opportunities that can complement your academic studies and expand your horizons. For instance, Harvard offers a multitude of distinguished research positions for undergraduates, ranging from thesis research to research assistantships. The University of Pennsylvania sent students to 48 countries through their study abroad offerings in the 2022-2023 academic year. Meanwhile, Princeton offers more than 400 programs in 140 countries through which students may study abroad. Whether conducting groundbreaking research in your field of study or gaining real-world experience through internships, the plethora of opportunities available to you at an Ivy League university will not only enhance your resume but also deepen your understanding of your chosen field and prepare you for future success.

5. Carve out your niche

Finally, just as high school is a time to hone your passions and demonstrate them in action in your community, college is a more rigorous opportunity to identify and make a name for yourself within a niche industry or discipline. The best way to begin doing so is to have conversations with professors, graduate students, and older students in your field. Ask them questions like: Where do you see the field expanding or moving in the next five years? What are the most significant recent developments in this profession/field? What subjects do you think have been largely unexplored? What advice would you give to emerging scholars in this discipline? While pursuing a subject of true interest to you is indeed important, it is also important to consider how you will contribute uniquely to your subject of interest, and thereby maximize your odds of success in the job market.

Finally, keep in mind that you can (and should) begin practicing these skills in high school. The more you engage in these activities, the more natural they will be when you are on campus at a top university.
