Postdoctoral Research Associate – Mechanical Engineering at CMU under CMU Portugal Large Scale Collaborative project WoW

Postdoctoral Research Associate to join the Carmel Majidi lab in MechE at Carnegie Mellon to carry out advanced independent and/or directed research to achieve the objectives of the research project. This position will require an in depth knowledge of a specialized field, process, subject area and may involve coordinating and implementing complex research plans, development of methods of research, testing and data collection, analysis and evaluation, and writing reports which contain descriptive, analytical and evaluative content. The candidate will lead research on the development of sticker-like soft and stretchable electronics for wearable technologies. This will include the fabrication and testing of soft printed electronics using liquid metal alloy.

Research Opportunity in Electrical Engineering under project TAMI

A Call will be open from January 27th 2021, to work under the scope of CMU Portugal Large Scale Collaborative project TAMI.  This position is adressed to students of an integrated higher education master’s degree in electrical engineering, informatics, bioengineering, informatics or similar with experience in deep learning models, computer vision and in python. The candidate will be responsible for preparing a survey on multimodal vision models based on deep learning with interpretability requirements; investigate and propose new solutions to integrate heterogeneous visual sources, overcoming the limitations of current systems; carry out an experimental comparative study of the proposed solutions and state of the art, based on project datasets or publicly available; write a scientific article; write the activity report for the scholarship.

A Call is open under the scope of project CMU/TIC/0083/2019, funded exclusively by Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT) under the scope of the CMU Portugal Exploratory Project SyNAPSE. The role will be Research and Development (R&D) to enable this platform with state of the art Deep Learning and Computer Vision methods entangled with Information Retrieval and Natural Language Processing algorithms. Research Grant for MSC in the Project eCSAAP – Human Computer Interaction

The candidate will integrate the research team of project eCSAAP. The project INSIDE is a collaboration between Carnegie Mellon University, INESC-ID, Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade Nova de Lisboa, Hospital Garcia de Orta, and three Portuguese companies (IDMind, VoiceInteraction and Plux). It addresses symbiotic human-robot interaction in the context of therapy of children with ASD. The grantees are expected to contribute to the deployment stage of the INSIDE infrastructure, namely in terms of: Deployment of animation behaviors in the mobile robot used in the project; Deployment of high-level interaction behaviors that allow the robot to react to the actions of the human user (child).

PUBLIC NOTICE FOR AN INTERNATIONAL CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

FOR THE POST OF APPLIED RESEARCH ASSISTANT

1. Framework

The Rector of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa, Prof. Dr. Isabel Capeloa Gil, hereby announces the opening of an international call for applications for one vacancy of applied research assistant to perform duties of development and knowledge transfer (with an exclusivity clause), in the scientific field of Biotechnology. The research activities will be carried out at the Centre for Biotechnology and Fine Chemistry (CBQF), integrated at the Faculty of Biotechnology of Universidade Católica Portuguesa, in Porto, within the framework of the Smart Sustainable Farms, Food and Trade European Digital Innovation Hub (SFT - EDIH) - Investment TD-C16-I03 - CATALYZING THE DIGITAL TRANSITION OF COMPANIES.

Within the scope of this Smart Sustainable Farms, Foods and Trade European Digital Innovation Hub project, research will be carried out with the main objective of promoting Circularity associated with the Digitalization of the Agri-food Sector. The activities to be developed include, among others, diagnoses and development of digitalization solutions in the agri-food sector, integrating technological innovation, with sustainable practices, to optimize processes and reduce environmental impact.

2. Workplace

The workplace is located at the Porto facilities of the Universidade Católica Portuguesa.

3. Remuneration

Gross monthly pay is 1319,22€, plus meal allowance, to which will be added annual leave and Christmas allowances.

4. Admission requirements

Any national, foreign, or stateless candidates who hold a degree in Bioengineering or related scientific fields, and who furthermore hold a scientific and professional curriculum vitae whose profile is suited to the activities to be performed, can submit their application. If the degree was awarded by a foreign higher education institution, said degree must comply with the provisions of Portuguese legislation regarding the recognition of foreign degrees. For those purposes, the requirements described in point no. 9 of this public notice must be considered.

4.1. General Requirements

The general admission requirements are those defined in point 4.

4.2. Specific Requirements

In specific terms, candidates must have:

• Master's degree in Bioengineering or related areas
• Scientific research experience and demonstration of a research trajectory into circularity solutions and strategies for the agri-food sector;
• Experience in the area of circular economy;
• Candidates must also have good teamwork and interpersonal skills and immediate availability to start the contract;
• Publications that demonstrate results in the areas mentioned above;
• Excellence in mastering the English language, both spoken and written.

5. Assessment criteria

The assessment criteria, based on the requirements listed in point 4, are the following:

• Curricular evaluation (80%);
• Previous experience (20%).

If necessary, the candidates ranked in the top positions may be interviewed, with the assessment criteria being the following: Curricular evaluation 80%; previous experience (15%); interview (5%).

6. Tender Selection Panel

The tender selection panel shall be formed by:

Other members: Prof. Dr. Eduardo Luis Cardoso; Prof. Dr. Paula Castro.

7. Deliberation and publication

The panel shall deliberate by means of roll-call voting based on the adopted and disclosed selection criteria, with no abstentions allowed. Minutes of panel meetings shall be taken. These shall contain a summary of events, as well as details of the votes cast by each of the members and their respective reasoning. After all selection criteria have been applied, the panel shall prepare a ranked list of approved candidates and their respective classification. The panel’s final decision shall be approved by the Rector, who shall also approve the hiring of the selected candidate.

The ranked list of approved candidates will be posted at the Porto facilities of Universidade Católica Portuguesa, located at Universidade Católica Portuguesa – Centro Regional do Porto, Rua de Diogo Botelho, 1327, 4169-005 Porto, Portugal  and will be published on the website    http://www.porto.ucp.pt/ Candidates will be notified by email once this list has been made available.

8. Preliminary Hearing and Final Decision Deadline

After notification of the results, candidates have ten days to respond. In the following five days (counting from the end of the candidates’ response period), the panel’s final decision is issued.

9. Formal application procedure

Applications are formalized by completing the application form available at https://hr-ucpporto.inqueritos.porto.ucp.pt/848917?lang=en  

Applications must be submitted in English.

Applications shall include the following documents:

a) Curriculum vitae;

b) Certificate of conclusion of the degree with the respective date, which must be submitted as an attachment to the form mentioned in the previous point, following the instructions specified in said form;

c) Cover letter, demonstrating the candidate's motivations;

d) If the degree is issued by foreign higher education institutions, the candidate must submit the Recognition Certificate or proof of the application for recognition pursuant to Portuguese law.

If the degree has been awarded by a non-Portuguese higher education institution, said degree must comply with the provisions of the Portuguese legislation on the recognition of foreign degrees, as set out in Decree-Law no. 66/2018 of August 16th. Entering into a contract with the selected candidate is conditional on the submission of the formal document.

10. Application deadline

Candidates may submit their application, pursuant to the terms mentioned in the previous point, from June 28, 2024 until July 8, 2024 (until 5pm, Continental Portugal time).

Candidates who do not comply with the application’s prerequisites or who fail to submit proof of meeting the requirements stated in the present public notice shall be excluded from consideration. In case of doubt, the panel is entitled to request that candidates present further documentation attesting to their written statements. Failure to submit the requested clarification, information, or documents, within five working days of being requested to do so, determines the dismissal of the application.

Any false statements made or provided by the candidates are punishable by law.

11. Privacy Policy

Universidade Católica Portuguesa is the controller responsible for the processing of Personal Data in accordance with Regulation (EU) 2016/679 – General Regulation on Data Protection.

The personal data submitted within the scope of this tender procedure is processed within the framework of said tender procedure only, and will be treated by Universidade Católica Portuguesa with the purpose of verifying the fulfillment, by the candidates, of the assumptions established in the applicable legislation for their contracting.  Opposition to the processing of data by the candidates will make it impossible to accept the application and, therefore, to analyze and evaluate it.

The data retention period shall correspond to the legally defined period of five years.

13. Final remarks

The present call for applications is exclusively destined to fill this specific vacancy and can be terminated at any time up to the approval of the final candidate list. The call for applications expires once the vacancy has been filled.

The present call for applications and the contract signed as a result thereof shall only take effect if financing conditions are met.

The present call for applications may be canceled when it is vacant, when any case of force majeure occurs, or when other reasons of a budgetary nature, occurring after the opening of the competition, determine it.

The selected candidate shall be hired by Universidade Católica Portuguesa as a applied research assistant under an uncertain term contract ( contrato a termo incerto) predicted to start on August 1, 2024 with the estimate duration of 22 months (duration of the activities) which will never, under any circumstances, be superior to 48 months.
