With all these responsibilities, it’s difficult to know  how to write your resume  or make a cover letter , so you’re the top candidate in the competitive sales field.

There’s where we come in: we’ve analyzed hundreds of car salesmen resumes from all levels of experience. Then we distilled our knowledge into seven car salesman resumes to help you get more interviews (and eventually a job) in 2024.

Why this resume works

  • When you can, list your net profits, revenue generated, and lead conversions, as well as your customer service scores, in your work experience bullet points.
  • For example, most employers want your resume as a PDF, but some may want a  Google doc resume format . Always check the application for submission rules, otherwise you won’t be called for an interview.

Car Dealer Resume

Car dealer resume example with 6 years of experience

  • For instance, there is an increase in revenue by a 46% margin and a 79% increase in average deals size; all pointing to a track record of exemplary performance.

Car Salesman No Experience Resume

Car salesman no experience resume example with 8 years of sales associate experience

  • To put an icing on your piece, amplify your role in expanding revenue and opportunities (cue: 67% increase in market share).

Entry-level Car Salesman Resume

Entry-level car salesman resume example with 3 years of experience

  • Even if your past roles weren’t sales related, you can still highlight transferable skills, like customer service or automotive maintenance. Soft skills are your best assets here, as they’re not industry-specific.
  • An objective is a two-to-three-sentence statement that conveys your enthusiasm for the position and the skills you’d bring to the table.
  • If you do add an objective, make sure you  tailor it for each job  by including the company’s name and the position title.

Luxury Car Salesman Resume

Luxury car salesman resume example with 13 years of experience

  • For example, did you reach all your sales quotas? Did you earn a large commission after a spectacular sale? Did you help internally by training team members or increasing your company’s social media presence?
  • Cite specific data-driven examples, including marketing initiatives and customer-centric sales techniques, for the best effect.
  • To make  formatting your resume  easier (and faster), try using a  resume template  so you can switch sections and adjust color, font type, and font size.

Honda Car Salesman Resume

Honda car salesman resume example with 15 years of experience

  • This is the place to mention any role-specific talents you have, such as diagnosing Honda vehicles and maintaining repair schedules.
  • If you don’t have any specific skills to mention on your Honda car salesman resume, don’t panic. Soft skills like communication and time management are still valuable.
  • You’re not limited to mentioning it in the title, either; you can also put it in your work experience bullet points or even an optional section like certifications or licenses.

Used Car Salesman Resume

Used car salesman resume example with 8 years of experience

  • Speaking of skills, don’t neglect soft skills like time management and negotiation in addition to technical skills. We’d recommend focusing on technical skills 60 percent of the time, with the rest devoted to transferable soft skills.
  • Do you race? Tinker with collector vehicles? This passion for cars makes you an asset in the car sales industry, so find a way to include it!

This is the chance for you to bring forth your best and make a good first impression hence you should put a thorough effort in framing your auto sales resume.

Most of the recruiters rely on ATS (Applicant Tracking System) to filter through the sea of resumes and pick the most eligible ones.

You need to make sure that your resume for car salesman is ATS-targeted so that the recruiter can get an insight into your potential car salesmanship for the targeted job.

To rank high on the ATS, you must use the keywords used by the recruiter to describe the requirements of the job profile that has been advertised.

Doing so can help raise your chance of being shortlisted by the recruiters for interviews and may also get you the desired job.

Car Salesman Resume Sections

Frame the following standard sections while composing your car sales manager resume with a flawless finishing:

  • Personal Information
  • Profile Title
  • Summary/Objective
  • Professional Experience

The following optional sections can be framed whenever required, provided you possess them:

  • Certifications (if any)
  • Awards & Recognition (if any)
  • Additional Information (if any)

If you want to know more about how to compose these resume sections, you can read about it on Hiration's 2022 Guide to sections in a resume .

How to write your Car Salesman Resume

There are three stages of resume writing which can help you master the art of crafting the perfect car sales resume.

They have been discussed below for you to have a better understanding of how these three stages can enhance your car dealership resume:

Master Car Salesman Resume

First draft of car salesman resume, final draft of car salesman resume.

The first stage is the master car sales manager resume draft which works as the master folder of all your important pieces of information.

Here in this stage, you need to create a master resume wherein you can write down all your professional, educational, and personal information that is required in framing your auto sales resume.

This works as your master folder which can be used in the present time-line and for any future updates of your car salesman resume.

You need not stress over any unclear points that you are unsure of at this point because they can be used in any of the future updates of your automotive sales resume.

Creating this master draft helps in stacking up all your information in one place and saves you the time by avoiding the wastage of time in looking for scattered pieces of information all over the place.

In the First Draft of Car Sales Resume, you have to compose the following sections:

  • Personal information
  • Profile title
  • Professional experience
  • Certification (if any)
  • Awards & recognition (if any)
  • Additional information (if any)

Every standard section should be thoughtfully framed and the optional sections can be framed whenever necessary but only if you possess them.

In the Final Draft of your Car Sales resume, you need to create the following section with a professional approach:

Key skills: This is an important section of your automotive sales resume which should always be composed as the last second because it should be framed after scanning through your professional experience section.

Summary/Objective section: Your car sales resume objective or summary is the last thing you need to compose as it is the overall statement of the contents in your car salesperson resume.

Always follow the above discussed three stages of resume writing and enhance your auto sales resume writing skills along with the quality of your car salesman resume.

Read our 2022 Guide on how to write a resume to have a better understanding of framing this section.

Car Salesman Resume: Header

Your car dealer resume header is most likely the first thing that a recruiter notices in your resume for car salesman at a glance.

Writing your name as the header maintains the unique individuality of your auto sales resume amongst all the other resumes and helps the recruiters keep track of it.

So it is ideal to use your name as the default resume header of your car salesman resume.

Make sure that you use the largest font of 16-20 size to compose your automotive sales resume header.

In case you have a middle name, you should write only the initial of your middle name followed by a period, as shown below in the example:

Example: Freddy Thomas Mars should be written as "Freddy T. Mars"

You can also refer to Hiration's 2022 Guide to writing the perfect resume header for more details on how to frame this section.

The auto sales resume examples that we have given below shows how your name should ideally reflect in the header section:

Head Section in Car Salesman Resume

There are ideally three details that you may have to provide on the personal information section of your auto sales resume:

  • Updated Mobile Number
  • Professional Email Address
  • Current Location of Residence

Mobile Number

Always provide your functional contact number that is active at all times so that the recruiters can get in touch with you.

The recruiters may want to conduct an interview over the phone or get verbal confirmation to schedule interviews in case of any likely shortlist.

Keeping all possibilities in mind, make sure that you provide your contact number and avoid making careless mistakes.

Use the correct format for writing your phone number in a car dealership resume as mentioned below:

  • Place your country’s ISD code as a prefix before your phone number
  • Put a plus sign (+) before the ISD code
  • Eg: +1 82647 28463

Email Address

Ideally, the convenient source for the recruiter to get in touch with you apart from your phone number is through emails.

Always remember that you should provide only your professional email ID because giving out fancy and childish email IDs may make you seem like an unprofessional applicant who is not serious about one's career.

Example: [email protected] or [email protected]

Create an official email ID by any means if you do not have one as it is very important.

In case your name is Freddy Mars, your official email should have your real name.

Example: [email protected] or [email protected]

Maintain professionalism in your official activities at all times because it can present your image as that of a person who is serious about one's career.

Always write down your current location in your auto sales resume.

Avoid giving your full home address or any of your current/previous workplace address as it is not necessary and inconvenient.

If you are looking for a job in another country, mention the name of the city and country you are residing in.

And just mention the city and state you are residing in if you are looking for a job in your own country.

Here is the car salesman resume example to make you visually understand how an ideal personal information section is framed:

Personal Information Section in Car Salesman Resume

Car Salesman Resume: Profile Title

Your profile title is the identification mark on your auto sales resume as it describes your level of seniority or entry-level professional status.

It also makes it easy for the recruiters to give you the shortlist by understanding your interest and suitable job profile and industry.

Use the 2nd largest font size of 14-16 in your sales rep resume to write your most recent job title as your profile title.

Your profile title makes it convenient for the recruiter to identify your level of seniority in any functional industry and they may shortlist your automotive sales resume according to the level of your professional status.

Here is the car salesman resume example to see how an ideal profile title should be framed:

Car Salesman Resume: Professional Experience

Your professional section is a major feature of your car sales manager resume.

This section is where you should state all your professional work experience for the recruiters to recognize your potential which can lead to your shortlist for the targeted job.

Three important factors that go into framing the perfect professional experience section are discussed below:

STAR Format

Framing points, bucketing & bolding.

The STAR format is the ideal format that you should apply while writing your professional experience section on your auto sales resume.

STAR stands for:

Situation: To describe the nature of your work and the challenges you faced Task: To describe the roles and responsibilities assigned to you as part of your job Action: To describe the strategies you applied in performing the assigned tasks Result: To describe the result of your contributions as accomplishments or achievements

Give out the figures of numbers to specify your achievements as it can help enhance your effectiveness as an employee for any previous or present organization.

Framing your points can help make your car salesman resume look professional and raise your chances of being shortlisted by the recruiters.

Let us look at two examples to analyze how framing the points of your professional experience can enhance your automotive sales resumes :

Care Salesman Example 1:

"Daily responded to 15+ emails from customers by answering them and resolving their queries. I was also responsible for delivering daily emails to update the existing clients about any upgrade of the equipment in case any of it occurred. Successfully prepared reports that were 100% accurate and maintained the systematic record of all activity related to sales. I curated the reports of sales and services which were rendered to the customers for proper documentation."

Car Salesman Example 2:

Responded to 15+ emails daily from customers to answer & resolve queries Delivered daily emails to update clients with any equipment upgrades Prepared 100% accurate reports & maintained systematic sales activity record Curated reports of sales & services rendered to customers for documentation

Framing Points: Analysis

Both the car sales resume examples are stating the same things but example 2 is more readable as compared to example.

Framing your points (example 2) makes your statement more organized which makes it easier for the recruiters to go through your professional experience.

Bulky and lengthy paragraphs (example 1) may most likely bore the recruiters and they may reject your auto salesman resume even without going through your content.

Avoid paragraphs and vague words or points that are of no significance for the targeted job. Instead, stick with framing points to make your professional experience section readable.

Another important factor that can enhance your professional experience section is bucketing and bolding.

Let us look at the below-given car sales resume examples to understand the importance of applying bucketing and bolding while framing your professional experience section:

Car Salesman Example 1:

Cultivated characteristics features of 5+ new cars to upsell & enhance revenue Described available optional types of equipment for 100% high-quality product Interpreted the performance of 15+ vehicles to close deals with genuine customers Demonstrated the features of vehicle by accompanying 10+ customers on test drives Assisted 7+ customers daily to match their budget in purchasing suitable cars Converted 10+ walk-in visitors into customers by helping them purchase their car Organized 10+ events promoting the dealership by providing professional presentations
Inventory & Product Knowledge Cultivated characteristics features of 5+ new cars to upsell & enhance revenue Described available optional types of equipment for 100% high-quality product Interpreted the performance of 15+ vehicles to close deals with genuine customers Customer Relationships Management Demonstrated the features of vehicle by accompanying 10+ customers on test drives Assisted 7+ customers daily to match their budget in purchasing suitable cars Key Achievements Converted 10+ walk-in visitors into customers by helping them purchase their car Organized 10+ events promoting the dealership by providing professional presentations

Bucketing & Bolding: Analysis

From these two car sales resume examples, we can see that recruiters would find it easier to recognize your skills and achievements if you use bolding & bucketing in your car salesman resume.

Grouping similar points under unique subheadings (bucketing) can make your one-liners more specific and highlight your potential as a suitable applicant.

Moreover, when you use bolding, it increases the chances of drawing the recruiter's attention to your specific performance figures.

Because these are highlighted in bold, it makes it stand out and helps in creating a more visible impact on the recruiter.

Thus, you should use bucketing & bolding as shown in the car sales resume examples.

It can enhance your communication with the customers which in turn can help with the smooth functioning of your job as a car salesperson.

Always make sure that you provide only the relevant information and maintain consistency.

Car Salesman resume example

As the automotive landscape accelerates towards electric and hybrid vehicles, the role of a car salesman is shifting. Gone are the days when knowledge of horsepower and fuel types sufficed. Today, a deep understanding of electric and hybrid technology, charging infrastructure, and sustainability is crucial.

This industry shift means it's more important than ever for your car salesman resume to highlight your sales prowess and expertise in these cutting-edge technologies.

Whether you're a seasoned sales professional adapting to the new market or a newcomer eager to make your mark, crafting a resume that reflects these changes is critical to powering up your career.

This guide, including examples and pro tips, will walk you through the essential steps of constructing a compelling car salesman resume as innovative as the cars you sell.

How to format a car salesman resume

Like many others, the automotive sales industry values professionalism. A resume that reflects high standards suggests you'll uphold the dealership's reputation and effectively handle customer interactions.

A well-formatted resume demonstrates this professionalism and other highly valued skills, such as attention to detail, organizational skills, high standards, and effective communication.

Follow these tips to ensure your professional automotive sales resume ensures hiring managers won't want to let this high-performer drive off the lot:

  • Keep it simple . To maintain a sleek, professional appearance, avoid using unnecessary creative elements that may distract from your qualifications.
  • Be concise . Aim for a one-page resume and use bullet points rather than paragraphs when possible to describe experiences and achievements, making it easier to skim.
  • Use clear headings . Ensure your resume sections are organized logically and differentiated using simple, precise headings. Bold headings to help organize information and guide the reader's eye.
  • Include contact information . A prominent header  featuring your name, desired job title, and contact information  lets employers view them at a glance.
  • Proofread : Finally, proofread your resume multiple times for spelling, grammar, or formatting errors. Consider having someone else review it as well to catch anything you might have missed.
  • Maintain proper ordering : List all entries in reverse chronological order  to ensure your most recent and relevant appear first.

An essential formatting element you may or may not be aware of is ATS (applicant tracking systems). ATS analyze resume text for keywords and phrases corresponding to desired skills and qualifications for a specific job. Employers use these systems to quickly sort resumes and prioritize candidates with qualifications closely aligned to the available position.

Here are a few tips to ensure your formatting is ATS-optimized:

  • Fonts : Select ATS-friendly fonts matching the overall style of your resume. Some ATS-friendly fonts are Calibri, Arial, and Times New Roman. However, these commonly used fonts can be dull or generic. For more creative font options, try Rubik, Lato, Montserrat, Raleway, Exo 2, and Volkhov, which are all available on the Enhancv Resume Builder.
  • Document type : Doc or PDF files  are typical for resumes and most easily analyzed by ATS. We prefer PDFs, as they maintain your formatting across different operation systems.
  • Headings and subheadings : Ensure resume sections are logically organized and include simple, precise headings. Standard section titles ensure ATS accurately recognizes and extracts information from these sections.

Is your resume good enough?

How to write your car salesman resume experience

The experience section  is among your car salesman resume's most essential and impactful sections.

Auto retailers value experience because achievements in past jobs demonstrate your ability to sell. It's also essential to customer service since car buyers prefer buying from knowledgeable and experienced salesmen.

When describing past work in care sales, be sure to go beyond job duties and utilize descriptions to highlight past successes and achievements.

Include the following elements to construct an impactful experience section:

  • Company names and locations : Include the name of each dealership or company you have worked for and its location.
  • Dates of employment : List the dates you were employed in each role, typically in a month/year format. This helps hiring managers understand your tenure and stability.

  • Key responsibilities : Describe your achievements related to primary duties in each role, focusing on those most relevant to the job you're applying for. Use action verbs  to convey your involvement.
  • Awards and recognitions : If you received any awards or special recognitions, include these as they underscore your expertise and success.
  • Achievements and metrics : Wherever possible, quantify your accomplishments with metrics such as sales volumes, revenue generated, rankings, or percentages to showcase your effectiveness and impact. • • Achieved ‘Top Sales Associate’ recognition for exceptional sales performance and customer engagement.
  • • Consistently met or exceeded monthly sales targets.
  • • Utilized CRM software to track customer interactions and follow up on sales leads.

  • • Utilized CRM software to track customer interactions and follow up on sales leads, increasing repeat customer rate by 30%.

By including numbers and statistics, this applicant highlights their achievements and reinforces their stated skills. The applicant also incorporated keyword terms , such as effective needs analysis, product demonstrations, and strong closing skills, in describing how they made these significant achievements.

If your prior job was in a dealership that sold the same brands or types of vehicles as the job you're applying to, be sure to note your extensive product-specific knowledge in your experience descriptions as well. This is an excellent way to target your resume for a particular sales position.

How to quantify impact on your resume

One of the most effective ways to rev up your resume  is with statistics that sell! Whether you've boosted dealership revenue, skyrocketed customer satisfaction scores, or smashed sales targets, your proven track record will make it impossible for hiring managers to pass you by.

Sales is a numbers game. Include numbers and statistics to turbocharge your resume's impact by showcasing your sales prowess through hard-hitting, quantifiable achievements.

Here are a few of the best ways to quantify your superior selling skills using numbers.

  • Annual sales numbers : Sales figures demonstrate your ability to generate income.
  • Average number of cars sold monthly : This highlights your consistency and capacity to meet sales targets.
  • Percentages of sales targets achieved : These showcase your ability to meet or even exceed sales expectations.
  • Number of return customers : This indicates your ability to build and maintain customer relationships, fostering loyalty and increasing sales.
  • Customer satisfaction scores : These measures illustrate your passion for customer satisfaction, which is crucial in reputation management and repeat business.
  • Size of your client base : A large client base shows your ability to manage multiple relationships and juggle many selling scenarios.
  • Number of awards or sales competitions won : Recognizes your selling skills and highlights your competitiveness and drive.
  • Amount of successful upsells or cross-sells : Demonstrates your ability to maximize the revenue potential of each customer, increasing the dealer's profitability.

How to write your car salesman resume summary or objective

Sales managers often look for a cultural fit to ensure a new hire will mesh well with the dealership's values and existing team. A car salesman needs to demonstrate not just the ability to sell but also a personality and approach that align with the dealership's brand and customer service philosophy.

Personal statements, like a summary or objective statement, are essential on your car salesman resume to effectively communicate your unique values, your passion for the industry, and your alignment with the job opportunity. Ultimately, these statements play a key role in increasing your chances of securing interviews and landing a desired position.

An objective section is optimal if you have limited experience or are applying for your first car salesman job. It focuses on how you plan to use your background, such as in another sales industry, to achieve career goals while contributing to the success of the office.

To write your resume objective, follow these best practices:

  • Describe the type of position you’re seeking.
  • Share relevant or transferable skills that will help you succeed in the position using keywords  directly from the job description.
  • Clearly state your career goals and enthusiasm for working towards them in the role.
  • Highlight valuable contributions you can make while learning and gaining experience.
  • Avoid generic phrases. Instead, focus on specific skills and goals that set you apart.

A summary is preferable for care salesmen with extensive experience since it draws on prior work experiences to illustrate your suitability. A summary aims to highlight your past success as an indication of potential future success.

  • Highlight your top skills and experiences that directly overlap with the job description.
  • Briefly mention your years of experience to provide context for your level of expertise.

  • Use details such as naming specific dealer software, vehicle brands, and sales skills to reinforce the relevance of your experiences.
  • Convey your enthusiasm for the opportunity to continue successfully closing sales and providing knowledgeable, friendly service in the available position.
  • Be brief. A summary should only be 3-5 sentences.

Be sure to tailor your summary statement to increase its appeal. Check out the statements below to better understand why a targeted summary is more effective.

This generic resume summary lacks the focus that would be built into a more targeted resume. Although it includes various skills and values, they come off as disconnected and too general to stand out for a specific position.

This improved version specifies the candidate's experience in and passion for used car sales. As a result, they emphasize their expertise in matching customers with used vehicles and their ability to drive repeat business in the used car market. Additionally, they are able to incorporate specific quantitative data, such as exceeding sales targets by 20% annually, maintaining a customer satisfaction rating of 95% or higher, and achieving a 30% increase in repeat business. These numbers provide concrete evidence of the candidate's achievements and contributions in previous used car sales roles.

Research and Analysis

Before you start putting together your car salesman resume, it’s important to conduct proper research and analysis. This involves understanding your target audience, identifying key skills, duties, and responsibilities, and harmonizing the anatomy of a car salesman resume.

Understanding Target Audience

Your target audience as a car salesman might include potential customers, sales managers, and dealership owners. Understanding their needs and expectations can help you tailor your resume to appeal to their interests. For example, potential customers might be interested in your communication skills and ability to build rapport, while sales managers might be looking for your sales track record and experience with closing deals.

Identifying Key Skills, Duties, and Responsibilities

To create an effective car salesman resume, it’s important to identify the key skills, duties, and responsibilities of the job. The skills required might include strong communication skills, exceptional customer service, a deep knowledge and understanding of different types of vehicles, and sales or negotiation skills. Duties might include maintaining a positive relationship with customers, carrying out sales transactions, and keeping up with market trends and customer needs.

Harmonizing Anatomy of a Car Salesman Resume

Finally, harmonizing the anatomy of a car salesman resume involves structuring the document in a clear and concise way. This might include using bullet points to highlight key skills and accomplishments, keeping the document to one or two pages in length, and using headings and subheadings to break up the content. It’s also important to use specific and measurable examples to demonstrate your experience, such as detailing how many cars you sold in a given month, or how you exceeded your sales quota.

Conducting proper research and analysis before putting together your car salesman resume can help you tailor your document to the needs of your target audience, and showcase your relevant skills and experience in the best possible light.

Professional Summary and Objective Statement Examples

Every car salesman resume should have a professional summary and objective statement section that highlights both their experience and goals. In this section, we will discuss how to write effective summary and objective statements, as well as provide examples of both.

How to Write Effective Professional Summary Statements

A professional summary statement is a brief, three to four-sentence paragraph that highlights your experience and accomplishments. This section should be tailored to the specific job you are applying for and should grab the attention of the hiring manager.

To write an effective professional summary statement:

  • Start with a strong opening sentence that sums up your experience and skills.
  • Focus on the specific skills and experience that make you stand out from other candidates.
  • Use keywords from the job posting to show you are a good fit for the role.
  • Be specific about your accomplishments, using numbers and statistics where possible.

Remember to keep your summary statement concise and easy to read. Avoid using generic statements that could apply to any candidate and save your specific qualifications for the later sections of your resume.

Examples of Professional Summary Statements

Below are some examples of effective professional summary statements for a car salesman resume:

  • Experienced car salesman with a proven track record of exceeding monthly sales goals. Skilled in lead generation, customer service, and negotiating deals. Proficient in CRM software and managing a sales pipeline.

Each of these statements highlights the unique skills and experience of the candidate and immediately grabs the attention of the hiring manager.

How to Write Objective Statements

To write an effective objective statement:

  • Start with a clear and concise statement of your career goal.
  • Highlight your relevant skills and abilities that make you a good fit for the job.

By following the above tips for listing awards and recognition, and highlighting relevant accolades, you can demonstrate your value as a top-performing sales professional.

Professional Development Examples

In order to make a strong impression on potential employers, it’s important to include a section on professional development in your car salesman resume. This section should highlight any courses, training, or certifications you’ve obtained that are relevant to your career in sales, and can demonstrate your commitment to ongoing improvement and growth.

How to List Professional Development

When listing professional development on your resume, there are a few key things to keep in mind:

  • Be specific:  Rather than simply listing a course or certification, include details about what you learned and how it has helped you in your career.
  • Order chronologically:  List your professional development in reverse chronological order, starting with the most recent.
  • Include dates:  Include the dates you completed each course or certification, as well as any expiration dates if applicable.

Here’s an example of how you might format a professional development section on your resume:

Examples of Professional Development

Here are a few examples of professional development that can be particularly valuable for car salesmen:

  • Sales training:  This could include courses or workshops on sales techniques, customer service skills, or negotiation strategies. Look for programs that are specifically tailored to the automotive industry, and that cover topics like how to handle objections, how to close deals, and how to build long-term relationships with customers.
  • Certifications:  Earning a certification in sales or customer service can be a great way to demonstrate your expertise and commitment to your profession. Some relevant certifications might include the Certified Sales Professional (CSP) designation, offered by the National Sales Association, or the Sales Management Certification Program from the Sales Education Foundation.
  • Leadership development:  In addition to sales skills, car salesmen may benefit from developing their leadership and management abilities. Look for programs that can help you develop skills like communication, team building, and problem-solving, and that can prepare you for a leadership role within your dealership.
  • Industry-specific training:  Finally, make sure you’re staying up-to-date with the latest trends and technologies in the automotive industry. This could include training on new makes and models, emerging technologies, or best practices for digital marketing and social media.

By highlighting your professional development on your car salesman resume, you can demonstrate your commitment to ongoing improvement and growth, and show potential employers that you are a motivated and dedicated sales professional.

Professional Affiliations and Memberships Examples

How to list professional affiliations and memberships.

When listing professional affiliations and memberships on your resume, it is important to include the organization’s name, your role or title, and the dates of your involvement. You can choose to list them under a separate section on your resume or include them under your work experience or education sections, depending on the relevance.

Here is an example format for listing professional affiliations and memberships:

Organization Name Your Role or Title Dates of Involvement

It is important to note that you should only list affiliations and memberships that are relevant to the job you are applying for, or demonstrate relevant skills or interests. Listing too many affiliations and memberships may come across as unfocused and distract from your qualifications.

Examples of Professional Affiliations and Memberships

National Automobile Dealers Association (NADA) Sales Representative January 2018-present

International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) Union Representative November 2015-December 2017

Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Member June 2014-present

National Independent Automobile Dealers Association (NIADA) Board Member January 2017-December 2018

Automotive Women’s Alliance Foundation (AWAF) Mentor May 2019-present

Automotive Service Association (ASA) Associate Member September 2018-present

National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) Advisory Committee Member October 2016-present

American International Automobile Dealers Association (AIADA) Member July 2015-present

Automotive Dealership Institute (ADI) Instructor December 2017-February 2018

Automotive Executive Women Member March 2019-present

These examples demonstrate a range of professional affiliations and memberships that may be relevant to a car salesman resume. It is important to customize your affiliations and memberships to showcase your expertise and qualifications as they relate to the job you are applying for.

Additional Information Examples

When creating a car salesman resume, there may be additional information that could help set you apart from other candidates. Here are some tips on how to list additional information and some examples of what you could include:

How to List Additional Information

Create a separate section: It’s important to keep your resume organized and easy to read. Therefore, it’s recommended to create a separate section for additional information.

Tailor the information: Make sure the additional information you include is relevant to the job you are applying for. Tailor the information to the specific job requirements.

Highlight your achievements: Use this section to highlight any achievements or awards that you have received. This could include sales records, customer satisfaction ratings, or any recognition you received from your previous employers.

Keep it concise: While it’s important to include relevant information, try to keep it concise. Stick to the most important details and don’t overcomplicate the section.

Examples of Additional Information

Here are some examples of additional information you could include on your car salesman resume:

Language skills: If you are bilingual or multilingual, include this information in the additional information section. This could be especially relevant if you are applying to work with a dealership that caters to a specific community.

Certifications: If you have any certifications related to car sales or the automotive industry, list them in this section. This could include certifications from manufacturers, sales training programs, or other industry-related organizations.

Community involvement: If you have been involved in any community projects or organizations, include this information on your resume. This could showcase your dedication to your community and your ability to build relationships outside of work.

Hobbies: While it’s not necessary to include your hobbies, they could showcase your personality and give an insight into what makes you unique. This could be especially relevant if your hobbies are related to the automotive industry.

Volunteer work: If you have volunteered for any organizations or events, include this information. This could showcase your commitment to making a difference and your willingness to help out in your community.

Including additional information on your car salesman resume could help set you apart from other candidates. Just remember to keep it tailored to the specific job requirements and keep it concise.

What’s the Best Format for a Car Salesman Resume?

You need to gain traction with the recruiter from the start.

Go for the reverse-chronological resume format .

Well, you know—

Your achievements will stand out like a yellow 1970 Lamborghini Miura.

Plus, your resume will come across as neat, organized, and approachable. Just like a good car salesman should.

If you’re a career changer you might also want to give a thought to a combination resume.

Now that you’ve chosen the best format your car salesman resume, just remember:

  • Use white space to your advantage—do not cram too much information.
  • Go for a resume-friendly font .
  • Write simple headings.

Export your auto sales resume to a PDF file. This format is like a Toyota Hilux for documents—simply indestructible. It would literally take a wrecking ball to put it out of shape.

Now, let’s move on to the first section of your resume.

Fuzzy about the format your car salesman resume should stick to? Here’s a quick read: Best Resume Format: Which to Choose?

2. Car Salesman Resume Summary or Resume Objective?

Here’s the thing:

You don’t get a second chance to make the first impression on the recruiter.

You need to stand out from the crowd of 299+ hopefuls.

By writing a killer resume objective or summary.

You know—

Adding a car salesman resume objective or summary is like revving up a Mustang Shelby GT 500. It heralds pure power that no one dares to ignore!

Before getting down to writing a resume objective or summary, you need to know the difference between the two.

Here it is:

A car salesman resume objective consists of 2 or 3 sentences proving you’re a good fit. It works best for those with limited experience.

A car salesman resume summary , well, it summarizes your work experience that matches the position.

Car Salesman Resume Objective—Example

The first candidate knows exactly how to market themselves. Their communication skills  are clearly visible. They do a fantastic job showing their character traits, blending in experience, and showing the benefit for the company.

It’s customized to boot.

The other candidate, well, he clearly wanted to cut some corners. The result? A bland, generic objective that doesn’t mean much to the employer.

Car Salesman Resume Summary—Example

Look at the wrong example, now back to the right example, now back at the wrong one—

And back to the right one.

Sadly, the wrong example has nothing to look at.

You don’t want to be the candidate with nothing to show.

Your car salesman resume summary needs to stand out. Make sure to:

  • Show your track-record.
  • Specify your experience.
  • Demonstrate your biggest achievement(s).
  • Back whatever possible with numbers.

The Best Car Salesman Job Description for a Resume

Congratulations!

The hiring manager wasn’t able to ignore the sound of your engine revving up.

It’s time to take them for a test drive.

And buckle up—

You’re about to learn how to make your car salesman job description hit like a twin turbo engine.

This is how to do it step-by-step:

First, look at the available car salesman jobs. Pick a job opening that matches your experience level and qualifications.

It could look something like that:

  • Approach, greet, and offer assistance  or direction to any customer who enters the dealership showroom or sales lot.
  • Assist customers  in selecting a vehicle by asking questions and listening carefully to their responses.
  • Explain  product performance, application, and benefits to prospects.
  • Describe  all optional equipment available for customer purchase.
  • Build strong rapport  with customers.
  • Perform  high-quality, professional, and knowledgeable  presentation  and  demonstration  of new/used vehicles.
  • Learn  to o vercome objections, close sales , and perform all other steps of the sales process in accordance with company standards.
  • Report to the Sales Manager  regarding objectives, planned activities, reviews, and analyses.

The yellow highlights show you the car salesman requirements for this particular position. These are the skills you need to demonstrate.

If your experience fits the car salesman job description, describe it using the job posting as a guide.

Here’s a sample:

Car Salesman Job Description—Resume Sample

To nail your car salesman resume job description you must answer a specific job ad.

You know everything about ABS, TCS, and ASR. But have you heard of ATS?

An ATS (Applicant Tracking System) helps recruiters sift through hundreds of resumes that flood their inboxes. The system looks for specific words in candidates’ resumes to make an initial selection for the recruiter.

If you want to go past that stage, automotive sales resumes must contain the words ATS is looking for.

You’ve just learned it. Use the original job posting as a guide, and describe your experience accordingly.

As easy as ESP!

ABC, that is.

To sum up, follow these rules to make your car salesman job description shine:

  • Go for resume action words and highlight your car salesman skills.
  • Focus on your  achievements, not responsibilities. Show how well you’re able to perform car salesman duties.
  • Put numbers wherever you can. Numbers speak louder than words.

Wax your car salesman resume job description by adding a separate key achievements section.

It could look like this:

Show your worth, and convince the hiring manager you’re the car salesman they need.

And finally—

Let’s take a look at what you should avoid:

With the car salesperson resume job description like that, expect to be as successful as Pontiac Aztec.

Always adapt your car salesman resume job description to a specific posting.

And finally, let’s take a look at how to get a job at a car dealership with no experience. Here’s a couple of ideas:

1. Previous gigs and projects.

Did you have a summertime job ? Maybe you worked as a waiter? Shop assistant? Distributed leaflets? Or maybe you delivered a presentation in front of live audience? Look at your past projects and put them on your car salesman resume.

2. No experience? Go and get some.

If you have absolutely no previous car sales experience, well, you need to get some. Look for opportunities to build up your people skills. Show some initiative!

3. Leverage your passions.

Are you a walking automobile catalog? A fan of a particular automaker? Passionate people’s enthusiasm can be truly infectious. And in combination with good car salesman skills (which you can learn) you can turn into a car selling machine! Your natural talents and interests can boost your chances of landing the job.

4. How to Put Car Salesman Skills on a Resume

Now let’s look under your figurative hood.

But before we do—

Would you bet $50,000 on a Nascar driver, just because he told you he’s so freakin’ good?

Highly unlikely.

It’s equally unlikely for a hiring manager to employ you just because you put your car salesman skills on a bullet point list.

So, what do you do instead?

Take another look at your car sales consultant resume job description:

The highlighted bits there are basically the same as the list below:

Car Salesman Skills—Example

  • Customer service skills
  • Communication skills
  • Rapport building skills
  • Organization skills
  • Presentation skills
  • Closing sales skills

The difference is you haven’t simply listed your skills as bullet points.

You’ve cleverly mixed them in your car salesman job description, and backed them with numbers to prove how good you are.

Now, if you want to give your car salesman skills more prominence on your resume, you can additionally list them in a separate key skills section.

You may also want to create an additional skills resume section, and list other relevant salesperson skills there.

Here are some ideas:

Car Salesman Resume—Skills

To present your car salesman skills most effectively, remember:

  • It’s always a good idea to scatter your skills around your car salesman resume. The experience section of your car sales resume is a perfect place to prove your sales skills by offering numbers.
  • Use a separate key skills section to reinforce the skills you take most pride in.
  • Create an additional skills section to highlight your other sales skills related to the position.

Not sure how to do that? Take a good look at the sample car salesman resume at the beginning of the guide.

5. Is Your Education Section Underperforming? It Might Be

You need a diploma.

Or, do you?

Wait—

Does it even matter?

It depends.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics , says a car salesman will typically receive on-the-job training.

But if you want to be the candidate in pole position, use the education section of your car salesman resume to your advantage.

Here’s the secret:

Don’t just drop the name of the school you finished. Add information about coursework or activities relevant to car salesman jobs.

This is what it can look like:

Car Salesman Resume Sample—Education

All facts. No nonsense.

Just remember:

Add extracurricular activities and coursework that set you apart from the other candidates.

Pro Tip : Only list your GPA if it’s as close to a 4.0 as possible and you’re fresh out of school. Once you get experience, listing your grades is a no-no.

6. How About a Cover Letter for Car Sales Positions?

A cover letter feels like a 2-stroke engine.

In a word: ancient.

Well, not really—

Cover letters still matter .

Not only can they double your chances of landing a job, but let you demonstrate your communication skills in practice.

So treat your car salesman cover letter with all the care and attention it calls for.

To make your car salesman cover letter stand out:

  • Keep it simple. Keep it short.
  • Fill in the blanks you may have left on your car salesman resume.
  • Make sure it’s well organized and clearly written.

Key Takeaway

Crafting your car dealer resume isn’t just about listing responsibilities and saying you worked at a car dealership.

To write the winning car salesman resume, you need to:

  • Start with a strong resume objective or summary.
  • Craft a meaty experience section (achievements above responsibilities.)
  • Pay attention to the format. It must be scannable, eye-catching, and look professional.

Choosing the right format for your car salesman cv.

The first step towards creating a persuasive CV has nothing to do with writing. Instead, you must decide between popular CV formats . These blueprints help you organise information using clear headings, separate sections, and digestible bullet point lists. Most importantly, employers and CV-reading software crave cohesion – messy CVs might end up in the bin!

There are two widely used formats to consider – the reverse-chronological CV and the skills-based CV. The former covers your work history, starting from your current or most recent role. The latter focuses on transferable skills and is more suitable for those with minimal experience.

Which is best for a car salesman CV? We recommend using a reverse-chronological structure because most companies prefer candidates with experience. You can talk about part-time, apprenticeship, voluntary and temporary positions alongside full-time employment.

However, the skills-based format might suit school leavers applying for entry-level sales positions or people wishing to change industries. Underscore relevant skills such as “communication” and “negotiation”, and then give examples of how you put each into practice.

Format aside, prioritise readability. Type in a professional font, separate each section with a clear heading, and send your CV as a Word or PDF document unless asked otherwise. Lastly, avoid colours and images – they make it impossible for CV scanning software to pick out essential information.

How to write a CV for a car salesman

When your skills are pleasing customers and selling cars, writing a CV can seem like a whole new career. However, it doesn’t have to be complicated and confusing. Instead, the best advice is to keep it simple – remember, recruiters aren’t writing experts either.

The following advice will explain how to write a CV that’ll get you ahead in this highly competitive field. Let’s explore:

How to add education to your child youth worker CV

How to add contact details to your car salesman cv, how to write a personal statement for your car salesman cv, how to present your work history on a car salesman cv, great skills to add on your car salesman cv, outlining education on a car salesman cv.

Education is the foundation for work experience, verifying that you possess the essential knowledge and skills to excel in the position. Alongside academic qualifications, you can outline extracurricular courses and training programmes, like Health and Safety or First Aid. Moreover, this section helps you to stand out against similarly experienced candidates – a university or college course is often enough to cinch the top spot!

Child youth work is an umbrella term that encompasses many different specialisms. Consequently, you can enter the career via several avenues. You’ll need a degree in Social Work, Psychology, or Counselling to formally counsel children. However, if you want to provide informal, non-medical advice via workshops, you could choose Childhood and Youth Studies or Community Education.

You don’t necessarily need an undergraduate degree. Some people study for a Level 2 or 3 Diploma in Youth Work Practice at college. Others leave school to complete an intermediate or advanced apprentice. The possibilities are endless to suit every personality and schedule.

Ready to dazzle the hiring manager with your qualifications? List:

  • Name of school, college, university, or other awarding body
  • Study dates
  • Subject title
  • Qualification level – e.g. NVQ or A level
  • Qualification result

Example of education for a child youth worker CV

University of London, 2006-2009 Bachelor of Science, Psychology: First-class honours

London College, 2004-2006 A levels: Psychology (A), French (A), Humanities (A), English (A), and Maths (B)

London High School, 1999-2004 12 GCSEs at Grades A* – A

If you want to receive an invite to the interview stage, you must include your most current contact information. How else will the hiring manager give you a much-anticipated callback? We suggest highlighting your details at the top of your car salesman CV, preferably in a slightly larger or bolder font for maximum visibility. Outline:

  • Phone number – the best one(s) to contact you on
  • Email address – keep it professional

Example of contact section for car salesman CV

Oliver Patterson, 45 Mountford Avenue, Romford, Essex, RH4 6TF, Home: 01987 456789 Work: 01778564345 [email protected]

The personal statement is a brilliant opportunity to catch the reader’s attention and spark their interest. However, there’s a catch – you only have three to four short sentences to summarise your most valuable skills and achievements. No pressure then!

Although it might sound impossible, we have a simple formula you can use. The first sentence should open with your years of experience and career focus. The second sentence explains what you can achieve, backed up by a fabulous figure. Finally, tie everything together with a concise summary of your unique skills and areas of experience.

The showstopping statistic is perhaps the most crucial part – it’s all very well saying you can do something, but employers want proof! For instance, you could dazzle them with your end-of-year sales figures or how many times you won “Salesperson of the Year”. The more specific and detailed you can be, the more you’ll shine against equally experienced candidates.

Need some more pointers? Try these:

  • Write in the third person to give your CV a polished edge
  • Use positive adjectives like “sociable”, “charismatic”, and “confident”
  • Don’t waffle – the best salespeople get straight to the point
  • Tailor all the information to the job specification
  • Double-check your application for mistakes

Example of personal statement for a car salesman CV

An ambitious, energetic, and reliable car salesman with an excellent sales record and superb customer service skills. Always maintains a professional appearance, friendly personality, and courteous manner. Possess extensive product knowledge that helps to close the majority of sales opportunities.

A knowledgeable car salesman with over five years of experience. Able to implement creative marketing strategies to boost sales. Capable of building a lasting rapport with clients, as well as maintaining and expanding a customer base. Hold a full UK driving licence and now looking for an opportunity with a company selling luxury cars.

The work history section is the place to dive into the nitty-gritty details. You should outline your key strengths and primary responsibilities, how long you typically stay with an organisation, and whether you’ve received any notable rewards or recommendations. Employers often spend the most time here, unearthing your potential. As such, every word counts!

When outlining your roles, include:

  • Employment start and end dates
  • Company name
  • Company location
  • Brief list of duties
  • Notable achievements

We recommend noting three to six responsibilities for each position, avoiding repetition. For example, if you mention “contract negotiation” underneath one job, talk about “organising test drives” in another. Covering as many duties as possible will show the recruiter how multi-talented and brilliant you are.

On top of this, now’s a great time to include more sensational statistics. We advise opening with a responsibility and then qualifying with a result. You might have “followed up on warm leads / generating an additional £150,000 in profits”. Or “implemented a software update / improving efficiency by 92%”.

Lastly, keep the tone energetic with unique adjectives and inspiring action verbs. Instead of saying you’re “chatty”, use “charming”, “persuasive”, or “sociable”. It’s a good idea to replace “responsible for” with punchier openers, such as “orchestrated”, “launched”, and “revolutionised”.

  • Handling cash.
  • Using a computerised stock control system to reorder goods.

Want to stay two steps ahead of the competition? Include an irresistible blend of CV skills . These attributes confirm your suitability for the role, helping hiring managers to wheedle out non-qualified candidates. Plus, CV reading software loves keywords because it can easily lift them from your application.

The top advice is to spotlight 12 skills in total, split between hard skills and soft skills. The former includes technical knowledge you pick up on the job or via formal education, like “closing sales deals” and “inventory management”. The latter are transferable – think “organised” and “adaptable”.

Arguably, soft skills are more critical to salespeople because the best boast a natural charisma and charm. Practical information can be taught, whereas personality-based soft skills are usually intrinsic. Consequently, don’t be afraid to reveal more of your personality.

Need a few more ideas? Read through the following lists:

Essential skills for a car salesman

  • General sales experience
  • Interest in cars and vehicles
  • Clean driving licence
  • Excellent customer service skills

Desirable aptitudes to set you apart

  • Varied car sales experience
  • Proficient in MS Office including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel
  • Well-organised and skilled at multi-tasking

  • Helpful team player

Education makes all the difference when two equally talented candidates compete for the top spot. Plus, qualifications underpin experience, reassuring employers you have the fundamental tools to hit the ground running. If you opted out of traditional education, you could talk about extracurricular training courses and certificates instead.

What does it take to become a car salesman? You don’t usually need a university degree or college course – only bundles of enthusiasm and unmatched people-person skills! Most individuals work their way up the ladder, but some apply for apprenticeships to get a head start.

That said, most companies prefer candidates with good English, Maths, and IT skills – completing GCSEs in these subjects will put you in good stead. When outlining your education, list:

  • Study start and end dates
  • Qualification level – e.g. NVQ or GCSE

Top dos and don’ts for car salesman CV writing

DON’T skip over education

Although you don’t need qualifications to become a car salesman, education is still crucial to convincing the employer you’re the right fit. Highlight any degrees, courses, and certificates you’ve completed. Alternatively, it might be a good idea to undertake additional training to refresh your skills.

Spell-checking your CV takes a few seconds but has a lasting impact. As well as running your document through a free spell-checker, ask a friend or relative to take a second look. A fresh pair of eyes can pick out any repetitiveness and formatting issues.

The rest of this guide gives more specific guidance on how to create your own cover letter in this format, and even includes some templates you can copy and paste.

How to write a Car Sales Person cover letter

Here’s a simple process to write your own interview-winning cover letter.

How to write a cover letter

Write your cover letter in the body of an email/message

When you send a cover letter with a job application, you should always write your message into the body of your email – or the body of the messaging system if you are sending via a job website.

Why do this?

Simply because you want to get your message seen as soon as the recruiter opens your application.

If you attach the cover letter as a separate item, this means the recipient will have to open it before they can read it – slowing down the process and potentially causing frustration along the way.

So, write your cover note in the body of your email/message to ensure you make an instant connection with the reader.

Write cover letter in body of email

Start with a friendly greeting

Cover letter address

Start you cover letter with a greeting that is professional but friendly.

This will build rapport with the recruiter whilst showing your professionalism.

  • Hi, hope you’re well
  • Hi [insert recruiter name]
  • Hi [insert department/team name]

Avoid overly formal greetings like “Dear sir/madam ” unless applying to very traditional companies.

How to find the contact’s name?

Addressing the recruitment contact by name is an excellent way to start building a strong relationship. If it is not listed in the job advert, try these methods to find it.

  • Check out the company website and look at their  About page. If you see a hiring manager, HR person or internal recruiter, use their name. You could also try to figure out who would be your manager in the role and use their name.
  • Head to LinkedIn , search for the company and scan through the list of employees. Most professionals are on LinkedIn these days, so this is a good bet.

Identify the role you are applying for

Once you’ve opened up the cover letter with a warm greeting to start building a relationship, it is time to identify which role you want to apply for.

Recruiters are often managing multiple vacancies, so you need to ensure you apply to the correct one.

Be very specific and use a reference number if you can find one.

  • I am interested in applying for the position of Car Sales Person with your company.
  • I would like to apply for the role of Sales assistant (Ref: 406f57393)
  • I would like to express my interest in the customer service vacancy within your retail department
  • I saw your advert for a junior project manager on Reed and would like to apply for the role.

Highlight your suitability

The bulk of your cover letter should be focused around highlighting your suitability for the job you are applying to.

Doing this will show the recruiter that you are suitable candidate and encourage them to open your CV.

The best way to do this, is by studying the job advert you are applying to, and find out what the most important skills and knowledge are.

Once you know the most important requirements, you then need to highlight your matching skills to the recruiter. In a few sentences, tell them exactly why you are a good fit for the job and what you can offer the company.

Cover letter tips

Keep it short and sharp

It is best to keep your cover letter brief if you want to ensure you hold the attention of busy recruiters and hiring managers. A lengthy cover letter will probably not get read in full, so keep yours to around 3-6 sentences and save the real detail for your CV.

Remember the purpose of your cover letter is to quickly get recruiters to notice you and encourage them to open your CV, so it only needs to include the highlights of your experience.

Sign off professionally

To round of your cover letter, add a professional signature to the bottom, giving recruiters your vital contact information.

This not only gives various means of contacting you, it also looks really professional and shows that you know how to communicate in the workplace.

Include the following points;

  • A friendly sign off – e.g. “Warm regards”
  • Your full name
  • Phone number (one you can answer quickly)
  • Email address
  • Profession title
  • Professional social network – e.g. LinkedIn

Here is an example signature;

Warm regards,

Gerald Baker Senior Accountant 07887500404 [email protected] LinkedIn

Quick tip : To save yourself from having to write your signature every time you send a job application email, you can save it within your email drafts, or on a separate document that you could copy in.

The specifics will obviously depend on your profession and the jobs you are applying to, but these are the key areas you should be covering.

Other parts of your written applicant will include writing a standout C, but for this blog, we will concentrate on how to write a job winning cover letter for car sales jobs.

Where do I start?

The first place to start with your cover letter, is to make a list of all the points you wish to include in it. For example, you can:

  • Express your interest in the role
  • Briefly mention the relevant experience you have for the job
  • Talk about your character and why you make a good for for the job and the company

This is a very brief outline of what should be discussed in your cover letter. You might also want to include a couple of examples that prove your worth or specific skills related to the job.

What should I include?

Remember, this is a cover letter. So it should be written in the format of a letter too. Include:

  • Include your name at the bottom, and add ‘Yours sincerely’
  • Also include your contact details

How to Write a Personal Statement

A personal statement can be a key part of your college application, and you can really make yours shine by following a few tips.

[Featured Image] A lady with pink hair is holding a piece of paper with a laptop on her lap.

When you're applying to college—either to an undergraduate or graduate program—you may be asked to submit a personal statement. It's an essay that gives you the chance to share more about who you are and why you'd like to attend the university you're applying to.

The information you provide in your personal statement can help build on your other application materials, like your transcripts and letters of recommendation, and build a more cohesive picture to help the admissions committee understand your goals.

In this article, we'll go over more about personal statements, including why they're important, what to include in one, and tips for strengthening yours.

What is a personal statement?

A personal statement—sometimes known as a college essay —is a brief written essay you submit with other materials when applying to college or university. Personal statements tend to be most common for undergraduate applications, and they're a great opportunity for an admissions committee to hear your voice directly.

Many colleges and universities in the US, especially those using Common App , provide prompts for you to use. For example, "Reflect on a time when you questioned or challenged a belief or idea" or "Describe a topic, idea, or concept you find so engaging that it makes you lose all track of time" [ 1 ]. If the school you're interested in attending doesn't require prompts, you will likely want to craft a response that touches on your story, your values, and your goals if possible.

In grad school, personal statements are sometimes known as letters of intent , and go into more detail about your academic and professional background, while expressing interest in attending the particular program you're applying to.

Why is a personal statement important?

Personal statements are important for a number of reasons. Whereas other materials you submit in an application can address your academic abilities (like your transcripts) or how you perform as a student (like your letters of recommendation), a personal statement is a chance to do exactly that: get more personal.

Personal statements typically:

Permit you to share things that don't fit on your resume, such as personal stories, motivations, and values

Offer schools a chance to see why you're interested in a particular field of study and what you hope to accomplish after you graduate

Provide an opportunity for you to talk about past employment, volunteer experiences, or skills you have that complement your studies

Allow colleges to evaluate your writing skills

Bring life to a college application package otherwise filled with facts and figures

How to write a personal statement.

As we mentioned earlier, you may have to respond to a prompt when drafting your personal statement—or a college or university may invite you to respond however you'd like. In either case, use the steps below to begin building your response.

Create a solid hook .

To capture the attention of an admissions committee member, start your personal statement with a hook that relates to the topic of your essay. A hook tends to be a colorful sentence or two at the very beginning that compels the reader to continue reading.

To create a captivating hook, try one of these methods:

Pose a rhetorical question.

Provide an interesting statistic.

Insert a quote from a well-known person.

Challenge the reader with a common misconception.

Use an anecdote, which is a short story that can be true or imaginary.

Credibility is crucial when writing a personal statement as part of your college application process. If you choose a statistic, quote, or misconception for your hook, make sure it comes from a reliable source.

Follow a narrative.

The best personal statements typically read like a story: they have a common theme, as well as a beginning, middle, and end. This type of format also helps keep your thoughts organized and improves the flow of your essay.

Common themes to consider for your personal statement include:

Special role models from your past

Life-altering events you've experienced

Unusual challenges you've faced

Accomplishments you're especially proud of

Service to others and why you enjoy it

What you've learned from traveling to a particular place

Unique ways you stand out from other candidates

Be specific.

Admissions committees read thousands of personal statements every year, which is why being specific on yours is important. Back up your statements with examples or anecdotes.

For instance, avoid vague assertions like, "I'm interested in your school counseling program because I care about children." Instead, point out experiences you've had with children that emphasize how much you care. For instance, you might mention your summer job as a day camp counselor or your volunteer experience mentoring younger children.

Don't forget to include detail and vibrancy to keep your statement interesting. The use of detail shows how your unique voice and experiences can add value to the college or university you're applying to.

Stay on topic.

It's natural to want to impress the members of the admissions committee who will read your personal statement. The best way to do this is to lead your readers through a cohesive, informative, and descriptive essay.

If you feel you might be going astray, ensure each paragraph in your essay's body supports your introduction. Here are a few more strategies that can help keep you on track:

Know what you want to say and do research if needed.

Create an outline listing the key points you want to share.

Read your outline aloud to confirm it makes logical sense before proceeding.

Read your essay aloud while you're writing to confirm you're staying on topic.

Ask a trusted friend or family member to read your essay and make suggestions.

Be true to your own voice.

Because of the importance of your personal statement, you could be tempted to be very formal with structure and language. However, using a more relaxed tone is better than you would for a classroom writing assignment.

Remember: admissions committees really want to hear from you . Writing in your own voice will help accomplish this. To ensure your tone isn't too relaxed, write your statement as if you were speaking to an older relative or trusted teacher. This way, you'll come across as respectful, confident, and honest.

Tips for drafting an effective personal statement.

Now that you've learned a little about personal statements and how to craft them, here are a few more tips you can follow to strengthen your essay:

1. Customize your statement.

You don't have to completely rewrite your personal statement every time you apply to a new college, but you want to make sure you tailor it as much as possible. For instance, if you talk about wanting to take a certain class or study a certain subject, make sure you adjust any specifics for each application.

2. Avoid cliches.

Admissions committees are ultimately looking for students who will fit the school, and who the school can help guide toward their larger goals. In that case, cliches can get in the way of a reviewer understanding what it is you want from a college education. Watch out for cliches like "making a difference," "broadening my horizons," or "the best thing that ever happened to me."

3. Stay focused.

Try to avoid getting off-track or including tangents in your personal statement. Stay focused by writing a first draft and then re-reading what you've written. Does every paragraph flow from one point to the next? Are the ideas you're presenting cohesive?

4. Stick to topics that aren't controversial.

It's best not to discuss political beliefs or inappropriate topics in your essay. These can be controversial; ideally, you want to share something goals- or values-driven with an admissions committee.

Polish your writing skills on Coursera.

Understanding bank statement mortgages

  • Who do they benefit?

What Are Bank Statement Loans?

Affiliate links for the products on this page are from partners that compensate us (see our advertiser disclosure with our list of partners for more details). However, our opinions are our own. See how we rate mortgages to write unbiased product reviews.

  • A bank statement loan is a type of mortgage that uses bank statements to help the borrower qualify for financing.
  • These mortgages are geared toward self-employed borrowers who could benefit from using bank statements in lieu of tax returns.
  • Bank statement loans sometimes come with higher mortgage rates.

Though it might not seem fair, self-employed borrowers and small business owners often have a harder time qualifying for a traditional mortgage , even if they can afford one. But that doesn't mean getting a mortgage is impossible.

Many mortgage lenders have solutions to help borrowers who run their own businesses become homeowners — namely, bank statement loans, which allow borrowers to qualify based on their banking trends, rather than tax documents and pay stubs. These provide business owners a way to qualify for a mortgage without sacrificing any of their businesses' tax breaks.

Bank statement mortgages are an alternative loan option for those with non-traditional income. This can include freelancers, contractors, small business owners, and other similar professionals.

These loans help non-traditional borrowers qualify for mortgages thanks to their:

Income verification alternatives

When getting a mortgage, borrowers are required to provide a bunch of documents proving that they have the income to afford the loan. Mortgage lenders want to be sure that a monthly mortgage payment won't push your debt-to-income ratio too high and put you at risk of default.

Traditionally, this is done with W-2 forms and tax returns that show the taxable income the borrower has earned in the previous two years. But for borrowers who are self-employed, providing the traditional mortgage documentation can be tricky.

Bank statement loans enable these borrowers to apply using bank statements instead of tax documents. For those who have enough income to afford a monthly mortgage payment but struggle to qualify for a conventional mortgage , a bank statement loan can make homeownership possible.

"These loan programs were designed to serve the self-employed borrower community and give them a product that can be underwritten adequately to control risks but to also give well-qualified entrepreneurs a tool to achieve homeownership," says Jon Bodan, strategic financing advisor at Real Estate Bees and president of mortgage lender The Perpetual Financial Group .

Focus on cash flow

With a bank statement loan, lenders are primarily looking to establish your cash flow trends — to determine how much you reliably have in the bank each month and how much you can devote to your new monthly mortgage payment.

To qualify for a bank statement loan, you'll generally need to provide between 12 to 24 months worth of consecutive bank statements. The lender will use this to determine your income trends.

By using their bank statements to show how much income they're pocketing after taxes and business expenses, these borrowers can successfully show lenders that they have the finances to afford a mortgage.

Who benefits from bank statement loans?

If your tax returns don't reflect your true income, you lack traditional income documents like W-2s or pay stubs, you own your own business, or work as a contractor or freelancer, bank statement loans can be a good option to consider. Here's a look at how professionals can benefit from these loans:

Self-employed borrowers

As we mentioned, borrowers are traditionally expected to show W-2s and tax returns when applying for a mortgage. But self-employed borrowers don't typically receive W-2s, and their tax returns often show them earning less income than what they actually earn.

"Many self-employed borrowers write off practically everything on their tax returns so they can minimize their tax liability, but they have plenty of cash and cash flow to service a mortgage successfully," Bodan says.

Business owners with fluctuating income

Bank statement loans can also be helpful for business owners with unpredictable incomes.

In this case, lenders can use the past few years of bank statements to determine the company's net income and, thus, how much the business owner can comfortably afford to pay each month toward a mortgage.

Those with significant assets

You might also want to use a bank statement loan if you have little or inconsistent income but lots of assets. If you have a large trust fund , for example, but not much incoming earnings, a bank statement loan would allow you to qualify by how much you have in that fund and other bank accounts, rather than relying on your current earnings and tax returns.

Bank statement loans are more complex than traditional loans and may require more documentation, but they're not necessarily harder to get. If you have enough in the bank to cover the monthly payment you're applying for, then bank statement mortgage qualification should not be a problem.

To qualify for a bank statement loan, you'll usually need at least 12 to 24 months of personal and business bank statements. This helps the lender establish your income trends and determine what you can afford. Before applying for a loan, ask your lender if they offer 12-month vs. 24-month bank statement loans. This will allow you to gather documentation early and ensure a smooth and fast underwriting process.

In some cases, bank statement loans may come with higher rates. Borrowers using these loans are often considered riskier, as their income is not as dependable as those with traditional 9-to-5 jobs.

Some banks and credit unions offer self-employed bank statement mortgages, but you'll have the best luck with more specialized mortgage lenders. You can also work with a mortgage broker. These professionals have access to dozens of bank statement loan lenders and can recommend the right one for your needs.

If you don't have traditional income documents like W-2s or pay stubs or you take a lot of business-related tax writeoffs, a bank statement loan may be the best option for you to get a mortgage.

The upside of these loans is that they can make it easier for non-traditional income earners to get a mortgage. The downside is that they may have higher interest rates and closing costs or require a higher down payment.

Award-winning ESPN NFL reporter Chris Mortensen dies at 72

Several colleagues share what Chris Mortensen represented at ESPN after he died Sunday morning at 72. (2:23)

Chris Mortensen, an award-winning journalist who reported on the NFL for ESPN for more than three decades, died Sunday morning at the age of 72, his family announced.

Mortensen joined ESPN in 1991 and was a regular contributor to the network's NFL shows and "SportsCenter." He was a regular news breaker for ESPN, including the news in 2016 that quarterback Peyton Manning was retiring from the NFL.

In 2016, he received the Pro Football Writers of America's Dick McCann Award and was honored during the Pro Football Hall of Fame's enshrinement ceremony in August that year.

"Mort was widely respected as an industry pioneer and universally beloved as a supportive, hard-working teammate," Jimmy Pitaro, chairman of ESPN, said in a statement. "He covered the NFL with extraordinary skill and passion, and was at the top of his field for decades. He will truly be missed by colleagues and fans, and our hearts and thoughts are with his loved ones."

ESPN's Adam Schefter, a longtime colleague of Mortensen's on ESPN's "Sunday NFL Countdown," said on social media : "An absolutely devastating day. Mort was one of the greatest reporters in sports history, and an even better man. Sincerest condolences to his family, and all who knew and loved him. So many did. Mort was the very best. He will be forever missed and remembered."

Mortensen, who was diagnosed with Stage 4 throat cancer in January 2016, stepped away from his role at ESPN last year "to focus on my health, family and faith," he said.

"Mort helped set the journalism standard in the early days of ESPN. His credibility, attention to detail and reporting skills catapulted our news and information to a new level," Norby Williamson, executive editor and head of studio production for ESPN, said in a statement. "More importantly, he was a great teammate and human being. He personified care and respect for people which became the culture of ESPN."

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said Mortensen's death was a "sad day for everyone in the NFL."

"I admired how hard Chris worked to become one of the most influential and revered reporters in sports," Goodell said in a statement. "He earned our respect and that of many others with his relentless pursuit of news but also with the kindness he extended to everyone he met. He will be greatly missed by many of us in the league who were fortunate to know him well beyond the stories he broke each Sunday.

"We send our condolences to his family, his colleagues and the many people Chris touched throughout his well-lived life."

Manning, in a post to Instagram, wrote that he was "heartbroken" by the news of Mortensen's death.

"We lost a true legend," Manning said in his post . "Mort was the best in the business and I cherished our friendship. I trusted him with my announcement to sign with the Broncos and with the news of my retirement. I will miss him dearly and my thoughts and prayers are with Micki & his family. Rest in peace, Mort."

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Peyton Manning (@peytonmanning)

Before coming to ESPN, Mortensen wrote for the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (1983-1990), covering the Falcons, the Braves and the NFL, and he won the George Polk Award in 1987 for his reporting. He also was one of the first writers hired by editor Frank Deford at the sports daily The National, working there from 1989 to 1990 before coming to ESPN.

"I join the immeasurable number of hearts across the nation, in journalism and the sports community, as we mourn Chris Mortensen," Falcons owner Arthur Blank said in a statement. "I'm grateful to have had the privilege of knowing Chris through his incredible work beginning at his days at the Atlanta Journal Constitution and like so many, being blessed by his professional excellence and personal grace through the many years that have followed. I considered Chris a personal hero of my mine and it is truly hard to imagine sports journalism without him.

"His ability to take on life's obstacles with grit and determination was always truly inspiring and his enormous impact on so many, me included, will live on through this work and unwavering friendships. I send my deepest condolences to Chris' family and friends, and pray they find peace in the honorable legacy and positive influence that Chris leaves behind."

Mortensen also was a columnist for The Sporting News, a contributor to Sport magazine and a consultant with CBS Sports' "NFL Today" (1990).

"Chris will forever be part of the NFL family. Loved by so many, he was a brilliant voice for the game and as passionate and talented as there has ever been," Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said in a statement . "He will be deeply missed and we're grateful for the special memories and legacy Chris leaves us."

Mortensen, who began his journalism career at the South Bay (California) Daily Breeze in 1969, won the National Headliner Award for investigative reporting in all categories in 1978. He received 18 awards in journalism and was nominated for two Pulitzer Prizes in his career.

He also was the author of the book "Playing for Keeps: How One Man Stopped the Mob from Sinking its Hooks into Pro Football."

Mortensen, a native of Torrance, California, was born Nov. 7, 1951. He attended El Camino College before serving two years in the Army.

He is survived by his wife, Micki, and son, Alex.

Miss USA contestants call for 'full transparency' from pageant amid Noelia Voigt's departure

personal statement for car sales

Miss USA contestants are calling for transparency from the organization amid Miss USA 2023 Noelia Voigt announcing that she would be relinquishing her crown , citing mental health issues.

Dozens of contestants have shown solidarity by posting a joint statement on their social media accounts. It reads: "The majority of the members of the Miss USA class of 2023 support Noelia Voigt's decision to resign from the title of Miss USA. Prioritizing one's mental health is of the utmost importance, and we stand behind her."

The statement continues, "We are asking the Miss USA Organization to release Noelia from the confidentiality NDA clause of her contract, in perpetuity, so that she is free to speak on her experiences and time as Miss USA. We request a response within 24 hours.

"Our goal is to give Noelia her voice back. We are asking for full transparency for contestants in the class of 2024 and beyond."

USA TODAY has reached out to the Miss USA Organization for comment.

The message came hours after UmaSofia Srivastava , Miss Teen USA 2023, also announced her resignation , citing the fact that her " personal values no longer fully align  with the direction of the organization."

In response, Miss USA CEO and President Laylah Rose said in a statement shared with USA TODAY on Wednesday that "All along, my personal goal as the head of this organization has been to inspire women to always create new dreams, have the courage to explore it all, and continue to preserve integrity along the way. I hold myself to these same high standards and I take these allegations seriously."

The statement continued, "Please be assured that the well-being of all individuals associated with Miss USA is my top priority."

Miss USA and Miss America are different: Everything to know about the pageants

Miss USA 2023 contestants call for change within Miss USA organization

Following Voigt's post, social media users noticed that the first letter in each sentence of her statement revealed the phrase "I AM SILENCED."

Alexis Loomans (Miss Wisconsin USA) – who was the second runner-up to the Miss USA title – Caroline Dixon (Miss Florida USA), Rachelle Di Stasio (Miss New York USA), Mackenzie Schutt (Miss Ohio USA), Jordyn McKey (Miss North Carolina USA), Monni Nyaribo (Miss North Dakota USA) and Madyson Rigg (Miss Montana USA) are among those who voiced their support by posting the graphic on social media.

"Everyone deserves a chance to speak," Dixon wrote in her Instagram Story repost of the statement.

McKey wrote a lengthy caption alongside the statement , which she shared on both her personal account and the official @missncusa account.

"I STAND WITH HER! As someone who has struggled with her own mental health, I commend Noelia for prioritizing herself and setting a beautiful example that your health is paramount to anything else. I am deeply saddened by the lack of transparency by the Miss USA organization and pray we see change soon," McKey wrote.

"We lost a Miss USA recently, that wore the same state across her chest that I do now and I take it very seriously to advocate for utilizing your voice and feeling able/ safe to do so. It is of the utmost importance to me to uphold myself to being open and candid as it is potentially helping save others in the process," she continued. "We cannot silence a woman who has had the experience of what our next class of Miss USA contestants are walking into. It needs to be addressed."

In 2022, Miss USA 2019 winner Cheslie Kryst , who was formerly Miss North Carolina USA, died by suicide at age 30.

McKey's message concluded: "I take so much pride in being a woman in pageantry, and I pray that I see the day when my morals and beliefs will align again with the organization and the origin of why I started competing in the first place. I stand on transparency and I want to hear her speak, it could save lives."

Rigg captioned the same graphic with a message that read, in part, "Today, we stand together, a little scared, very emotional, and with the full knowledge that we have the ability to be the change makers our system has always claimed to want to empower. @missusa @missuniverse  the decision is in your hands. Do what is right."

In a statement shared with USA TODAY earlier this week in response to Voigt's resignation, the entity said, "We respect and support former Miss USA Noelia Voigt’s decision to step down from her duties. The well-being of our titleholders is a top priority, and we understand her need to prioritize herself at this time."

The statement continued, "The organization is currently reviewing plans for the transition of responsibilities to a successor and an announcement regarding the crowning of the new Miss USA will be coming soon."

Florida sheriff deputies burst into wrong apartment and fatally shot U.S. airman, attorney says

Updated on: May 9, 2024 / 11:49 AM EDT / CBS/AP

Deputies responding to a disturbance call at a Florida apartment complex burst into the wrong unit and fatally shot a Black U.S. Air Force airman  who was home alone when they saw he was armed with a gun, an attorney for the man's family said Wednesday.

Senior Airman Roger Fortson , 23, who was based at the Special Operations Wing at Hurlburt Field, was at his home at Chez Elan Apartments, around five miles from the air base, when he was killed.

Civil rights attorney Ben Crump said in a statement that Fortson was on a Facetime call with a woman at the time of the encounter.

According to Crump, the woman, whom Crump didn't identify, said Fortson was alone in his apartment when he heard a knock at the door. He asked who was there but didn't get a response. A few minutes later, there was a very aggressive knock on the door, Crump said in a statement, but Fortson didn't see anyone when he looked out the peephole.

The woman said Fortson was concerned and went to retrieve his gun, which Crump said was legally owned.

As Fortson walked back through his living room, deputies burst through the door, saw that Fortson was armed and shot him six times, according to Crump's statement. Fortson was on the ground, saying, "I can't breathe," after he was shot, Crump said.

Fortson died at a hospital, officials said. The deputy involved in the shooting was placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.

The woman said Fortson wasn't causing a disturbance during their Facetime call and believes that the deputies must have had the wrong apartment, Crump's statement said.

Police Shooting Airman

"The circumstances surrounding Roger's death raise serious questions that demand immediate answers from authorities, especially considering the alarming witness statement that the police entered the wrong apartment," Crump said in the statement.

"We are calling for transparency in the investigation into Roger's death and the immediate release of body cam video to the family," Crump said. "His family and the public deserve to know what occurred in the moments leading up to this tragedy."

Crump is a nationally known attorney based in Tallahassee, Florida. He has been involved in multiple high-profile law enforcement shooting cases involving Black people, including those of Ahmaud Arbery, Trayvon Martin, Breonna Taylor, Tyre Nichols and George Floyd.

Crump and Fortson's family plan to speak at a news conference in Fort Walton Beach on Thursday morning.

The Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office said in a statement last week that a deputy responding to a call of a disturbance in progress at the apartment complex reacted in self-defense after encountering an armed man. The office did not offer details on what kind of disturbance deputies were responding to or who called them.

Officials said earlier this week that the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the local State Attorney's Office will investigate the shooting.

FDLE spokeswoman Gretl Plessinger told The Associated Press on Wednesday that it is highly unlikely the agency will have any further comment until the investigation is complete.

Okaloosa County Sheriff Eric Aden said Wednesday in a statement, "All of us at the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Office are saddened about the fatal officer involved shooting over the weekend."

Aden said that he immediately placed the deputy on administrative leave and has asked the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) to conduct the investigation that is required in such incidents. The State Attorney's Office will also conduct an independent review.

"At this time, we humbly ask for our community's patience as we work to understand the facts that resulted in this tragic event," the sheriff said.

Fortson was assigned to the 4th Special Operations Squadron as a special missions aviator, where one of his roles as a member of the squadron's AC-130J Ghostrider aircrew was to load the gunship's 30mm and 105mm cannons during missions.

Fort Walton Beach is between Panama City Beach and Pensacola in the Florida Panhandle.

From Trump's 'attack dog' to star witness: Michael Cohen set to testify in hush money trial

Prosecutors said Cohen's name over 90 times in their opening statement.

For nearly a decade, Michael Cohen was Donald Trump's trusted adviser, personal attorney, and self-described "attack dog with a law license."

But Monday morning, Cohen is set to serve as the star witness in Trump's New York criminal hush money trial , potentially delivering testimony that could cement the Manhattan district attorney's case and send Cohen's former boss to prison.

Prosecutors hope his testimony will support their allegations of criminal conduct against Trump in front of a jury that has already heard from 19 different witnesses and seen 200 pieces of evidence. While the jury has seen Trump's signatures on the allegedly fraudulent checks at the center of the case, some witnesses have seemingly distanced Trump from the alleged unlawful conduct -- leaving Cohen with the burden of pinning Trump to the crime.

According to prosecutors, Cohen was in the room when Trump and former National Enquirer publisher David Pecker agreed to a catch-and-kill scheme to illegally hide negative information about Trump from 2016 voters; coordinated with Pecker to kill two stories about Trump; and himself made a $130,000 payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels to buy her silence about an alleged 2006 sexual encounter with Trump.

The former president, who has denied the encounter took place, is on trial for allegedly falsifying business records related to Cohen's reimbursement in 2017.

While prosecutors have already warned the jury that many witnesses have "baggage" and have asked jurors to "keep an open mind," Cohen's value to the prosecution's case could be endangered by the disbarred lawyer's credibility issues. Cohen in 2018 pleaded guilty to tax evasion, campaign finance violations, and lying to Congress in what Cohen says was an effort to protect Trump. The former president's lawyers have argued that Cohen perjured himself again when he testified at Trump's civil fraud trial last year, and accuse Cohen of making his livelihood off books and podcasts that antagonize Trump.

"He has a goal, an obsession with getting Trump, and you're going to hear that," defense lawyer Todd Blanche told jurors during his opening statement. "I submit to you that he cannot be trusted."

Prosecutors have attempted to preempt the defense's attacks on Cohen by emphasizing that he was acting on Trump's orders when he committed crimes and has since atoned for his actions.

"You'll also learn that Cohen has publicly committed to making sure the defendant is held accountable for his role in this conspiracy," prosecutor Matthew Colangelo told jurors, later adding, "I suspect the defense will go to great lengths to get you to reject his testimony precisely because it is so damning."

Vital testimony

Cohen's importance as a witness largely stems from his deep involvement in the alleged criminal conduct, allegedly coordinating the catch-and-kill scheme with Trump and Pecker and devising the repayment scheme with Trump and former Trump Organization CFO Allen Weisselberg.

During his opening statement, Colangelo mentioned Cohen's name over 90 times, ultimately telling jurors that Cohen's role was "to take care of problems for the defendant."

Defense lawyer Todd Blanche similarly focused on the conduct of the so-called "fixer" during his opening statement, mentioning Cohen over 30 times. Blanche argued that once Cohen pleaded guilty to federal crimes in 2018, he decided "to blame President Trump for virtually all of his problems."

"You'll learn that Mr. Cohen has misrepresented key conversations where the only witness who was present for the conversation was Mr. Cohen and, allegedly, President Trump," Blanche argued.

PHOTO: Michael Cohen, former personal lawyer to President Donald Trump, arrives at New York State Supreme Court, Oct. 25, 2023, in New York.

According to prosecutors, Cohen and Trump participated in the August 2015 meeting where Pecker agreed to serve as the "eyes and ears" of Trump's presidential campaign by looking out for negative stories about Trump related to women. Pecker testified that he coordinated with Cohen after identifying two negative stories that the National Enquirer eventually spent $180,000 to kill on Trump's behalf.

During Cohen's testimony, jurors will likely hear a secret recording of a conversation between Cohen and Trump in September 2016 where Cohen discussed repaying Pecker for an $150,000 payment that National Enquirer parent company AMI made for the exclusive rights to former Playboy playmate Karen McDougal's allegations of an affair with Trump, which he denies.

"I need to open up a company for the transfer of all of that info regarding our friend, David," Cohen said in the recording, which the jurors briefly heard during the testimony of a custodial witness.

"So, what do we got to pay for this? One-fifty?" Trump said later in the recording.

While that meeting was memorialized with a surreptitious audio recording, the jury will have to rely on Cohen's recollection for most of his meetings with Trump, including his conversation with Trump once Cohen learned that Stormy Daniels was shopping around her allegations of an affair.

In his 2020 book "Disloyal," Cohen wrote that Trump approved the payment to Daniels despite being "torn" about the personal and political dilemma.

"A hundred and thirty thousand is a lot less than I would have to pay Melania," Cohen recounted Trump saying. "If it comes out, I'm not sure how it would play with my supporters. But I'd bet they think it's cool that I slept with a porn star."

Prosecutors allege that Cohen discussed with Trump and Weisselberg his plan to pay Daniels out of his own pocket and later get reimbursed.

"But before putting up his own money, Cohen confirmed with Trump that Trump would pay him back," Colangelo said. "And at Trump's request, Cohen agreed to lay out his own money for the payment to keep Stormy Daniels quiet."

Jurors are expected to see a record of two telephone calls on October 26, 2016, when Cohen allegedly confirmed the plan with Trump before creating the shell company to pay Daniels.

"Cohen made that payment at Donald Trump 's direction and for his benefit, and he did it with a specific goal of influencing the outcome of the election," Colangelo said.

Prosecutors also allege that Cohen and Weisselberg met with Trump in 2017 to confirm the plan to repay Cohen $420,000 for the Daniels payment and other expenses -- a payment that would result in the 34 allegedly falsified records that sit at the center of the case.

Trump's 'pit bull'

Michael Cohen began working for Donald Trump in 2007 after he helped perform a series of legal favors for the then-reality television star.

At the time, Cohen had considered himself partially retired after amassing a small fortune as a private lawyer and an owner of multiple lucrative taxi medallions -- but he said the offer from Trump excited him.

"I'd read 'The Art of the Deal' when it was published in the 1980s, not once but twice, and I considered the book to be a masterpiece," Cohen wrote. "Secretly in my heart of hearts, I thought I possessed some of Trump's best qualities."

A resident of Trump Park Avenue, Cohen first helped Trump resolve a dispute with the building's condo board before helping Trump settle issues with Trump International Resort's casino board and performing other legal favors.

By 2007, Trump offered Cohen a job at the Trump Organization. Cohen accepted the role of Executive Vice President and Special Counsel to Donald Trump and moved into an office formerly occupied by Ivanka Trump.

Cohen described his own role within the company as "Trump's spokesperson, thug, pit bull and lawless lawyer," and once bragged that he would take a bullet for Trump.

"Over time, as Trump became a patriarchal figure to me and I fell under the trance-like spell of the real estate tycoon, I would come to understand that questions of right and wrong didn't matter to Trump in the slightest -- all that counted to him, and then to me, was winning and displaying blind loyalty," Cohen wrote.

Cohen's 2018 guilty plea

Cohen never formally served on Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign, though prosecutors say he served an integral role in the catch-and-kill scheme that helped Trump hide negative information from voters.

Cohen left the Trump Organization in 2017 to serve as the personal attorney to President Trump, though one witness testified that Cohen not getting a job in the Trump administration left him "depressed and despondent."

"He said something to the effect of, 'Jesus Christ, can you f------ believe I'm not going to Washington? After everything I've done for that f------ guy, I can't believe I'm not going to Washington. I've saved that guy's ass so many times, you don't even know," Stormy Daniels' former lawyer Keith Davidson testified.

In a 2017 phone call with Davidson that Cohen secretly recorded, he vented about his relationship with Trump and the actions he took on Trump's behalf ahead of the 2016 election.

"For me, this has not, you know, this has not been easy ... What would you do if you were me?" Cohen said. "Would you write a book, would you break away from the entire Trump, you know, we'll call it doctrine, you know, would you go completely rouge?"

MORE: Judge warns Michael Cohen to stop talking about Trump hush money case

In April 2018, federal agents raided Cohen's home and office after receiving a referral from special counsel Robert Mueller as part of his probe into the Trump campaign.

At the time, Trump defended Cohen, calling the raid a "disgraceful situation." In an April 2018 tweet -- which the jury saw on Friday -- Trump complained that reporters "are going out of their way to destroy Michael Cohen and his relationship with me in the hope that he will 'flip.'" Prosecutors argue that the tweet was part of a coordinated pressure campaign from Trump to prevent Cohen from cooperating with authorities.

By August 2018 -- after Cohen pleaded guilty to tax evasion and campaign finances related to the 2018 election -- Trump changed his tone on Cohen, suggesting he made "up stories in order to get a 'deal.'"

"If anyone is looking for a good lawyer, I would strongly suggest that you don't retain the services of Michael Cohen!" Trump said in a tweet shown to jurors.

Cohen was sentenced to three years in prison, eventually serving more than 13 months behind bars and completing his sentence in home confinement. Before he reported to prison, he testified before Congress about Trump's business conduct, ultimately leading to the New York attorney general's civil fraud case against Trump.

Cohen's last time on the stand

Cohen himself served as a vital witness in Trump's civil fraud trial last year, testifying that Trump inflated his net worth to increase his position on the Forbes ranking of billionaires. The judge in the case, Arthur Engoron, ordered Trump to pay a fine of nearly half a billion dollars with interest, after determining that the former president had engaged in a decade of business fraud.

Defense lawyers in Trump's hush money case have argued that Cohen perjured himself again during his testimony in the civil fraud trial, further diminishing his credibility.

"And when are they going to look at all the lies that Cohen did in the last trial? He got caught lying in the last trial," Trump said after the opening statements in his criminal trial.

In a February 2024 ruling, Judge Arthur Engoron acknowledged that while Cohen's credibility was "significantly compromised" and the "animosity between the witness and the defendant is palpable," his testimony was credible because it was backed by evidence.

Prosecutors in Trump's hush money trial have similarly argued that while Cohen might have baggage, the evidence and testimony from the other witnesses will back up his testimony.

"A less-forgiving factfinder might have concluded differently, might not have believed a single word of a convicted perjurer," Judge Engoron wrote in his decision in the fraud case. "This factfinder does not believe that pleading guilty to perjury means that you can never tell the truth. Michael Cohen told the truth."

Additional context on the protest at Kelvin Smith Library Oval: May 6, 2024

To the Case Western Reserve community,

Today marks one week since protesters began an encampment on the Kelvin Smith Library Oval. The ongoing conflict at the center of this protest is a complex, often personal issue about which many in our university community feel passionately, but the devastating loss of Israeli and Palestinian lives should be a distress we all share.

Over the weekend, I had the opportunity to meet with elected undergraduate student leaders, who shared with me their perspectives—and those of the wide range of students they represent. I want to thank them for taking the time to have this discussion amidst finals, and for the care and commitment they show in their roles.

During our meeting, these leaders noted that many members of our community, especially students, are unaware of the history of administration’s attempts over the years at discussion with CWRU Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP), a student organization whose leaders are heading the protest on Kelvin Smith Library Oval. At the elected student leaders’ suggestion, I wanted to provide additional context that may help explain the ongoing encampment and the university’s response.

The protesters have issued a series of demands, several having to do with a 2022 resolution passed by the Undergraduate Student Government (USG) about which many current students may not be aware. To enable fuller understanding, I wanted to recap the situation briefly.

USG Resolution 31-51 called for the university to divest assets from “Israeli apartheid,” among other requests. In response, I sent this communication to the university community, and subsequently I met with USG leadership as well as leaders of CWRU SJP to more clearly express my intentions. Divestment—a key component of the protesters’ demands—is and remains something the university will not do.

I want to reiterate that individuals are free to express their opposition to the university’s position on any range of issues—including this one—in accordance with the guidelines in our freedom of expression policy . It is never acceptable, however, to protest with signs, chants or other actions that are intimidating to members of our campus community, as has occurred in some cases this past week at the Kelvin Smith Library Oval.

This academic year, there have been multiple instances in which CWRU SJP’s advocacy has violated the university’s community standards, including vandalism. Ultimately, after multiple attempts at engagement with CWRU SJP leaders, some of these actions led to an interim suspension of its student organization status, which our student conduct team has tried to work toward resolution.

On Monday, April 29, members of CWRU SJP and their allies formed an encampment on Kelvin Smith Library Oval—an act that violates multiple aspects of the university’s freedom of expression policy regarding the appropriate time, place and manner for such activities, including disruption of university operations.

Still, appreciating their commitment and in a gesture of trust, members of the administration worked with CWRU SJP leaders and made an exception on Monday to rules to allow students, faculty and staff (with CWRU IDs) to remain overnight if outside community members left by 8 p.m.—an approach that was followed effectively Monday night. On Tuesday afternoon, members of the administration held conversations with CWRU SJP leaders that yielded promises that were promptly broken, and by Tuesday evening, they violated the fundamental agreement when they allowed—and continue to allow—non-CWRU individuals to stay at all hours.

As a result, on Thursday afternoon, I communicated that protesting in the oval was no longer permitted, and charges and/or sanctions will be invoked. Since Thursday, protesters have escalated their actions, including expanding the perimeter of the protest to block access to buildings and disrupting campus operations in multiple ways. Case Western Reserve University police continue their presence, providing protection for the protesters and the rest of our community.

I share this information to assure you that the university is committed to working with student leaders—but working together requires all parties to work in good faith. As I noted in my email Thursday, we will not engage in discussion on the demands made until the encampment ends and protesters have completed any relevant conduct processes.

I hope this email provides more clarity on this evolving situation. Again, I want to thank the elected student leaders who met with me last weekend. Their constructive feedback, openness to discussion and advocacy for their peers are testaments to the strong leadership they display.
