Five study spots to get you (safely) out of your house

Karen Galindo , Arts and Entertainment Editor | September 19, 2020

Barnes+and+Nobles+is+a+great+study+spot+because+its+never+crowded%2C+it+smells+good%2C+and+it+makes+you+feel+like+a+smart+bookworm.

Khánh Nguyễn

Barnes and Nobles is a great study spot because it’s never crowded, it smells good, and it makes you feel like a smart bookworm.

Finding a new study spot during this stressful time of COVID-19 is easier said than done. Since I cannot, for the life of everything academia-holy, concentrate at home, I venture out into the public to find a semi-quiet study corner. But, with having to wear a face mask and having to maintain a six-feet distance with everyone I come across, it’s been harder than usual to find that perfect study spot. Below, I compiled a list of possible study spots that can get you (safely) out of your room.

  • Barnes and Nobles

Shout out to Morgan Anderson, The Sunflower’s Visual Director, for bringing B&N onto my radar. I’m a fan of Barnes and Nobles for the simple fact that it makes me feel like Rory Gilmore on the hunt for her next classic literature novel, when in reality it takes me three months to read a one 500-page fantasy YA book (I’m looking at you “Six of Crows”). Barnes and Nobles is a great study spot because it’s never crowded, it smells good, and it makes you feel like a smart bookworm. What more can you ask for?

  • Those tables next to the pond-fountain thingy in the Innovation Campus

I have no idea what this part of campus is called, but it’s where the food trucks sometimes park and it’s right next to the pond with that big fountain in the middle. I personally study there sometimes and it’s so relaxing. Something about being outside when the weather is just right and hearing the sound of water makes the pain of studying a lot more bearable (dare I say, even peaceful? ).

  • Your local coffee shops

This is such an obvious recommendation, but I have to represent our local coffee shops! Small coffee shops will not only make you feel like a hipster who’ll be voting for Bernie Sanders despite his failed nomination the instant you walk in, but they’ll also bring you joy the moment the smell of bitter coffee beans hits your face. So take a deep breath and let the caffeine rush through your veins.

Here are a few coffee shops in the Wichita area to consider: Fairmount Coffee Co., R Coffeehouse, Leslie Coffee Co, Reverie Coffee Roasters, and the Little Lion Cafe.

Keep in consideration that some of these shops have changed their hours, policies, and may only be offering carry-out, so please call the businesses ahead of time to avoid any misunderstandings. And by no means did I mention every local coffee shop/cafe, so feel free to do your own research to hunt down your personal favorite coffee shop!

  • Rhatigan Student Center Starbucks

I know I was just talking about supporting local coffee shops, but what can I say, I’m a basic white girl at heart. You can usually find me catching up on work at the RSC Starbucks, most of the time without a drink since I sadly cannot afford to buy a drink every week (feel free to venmo me to support my caffeine-efficient cause). They play some nice music at this Starbucks, people there are usually studying as well so there’s no big distractions, and the vibe is mellow. I recommend it to anyone who is looking to study, but not STUDY.

  • The Heskett Center

A friend recommended this idea to me and honestly, I wasn’t a fan, but surprisingly, many other people are! When you walk into the building, just walk straight into the lobby area. There you’ll find couches, tables, vending machines, a microwave and have a view of the swimming pool. It’s got an energized feel to it without it being too crowded or too loud. Maybe it wasn’t for me, but it can be for you!

I will be publishing my second novel in just 10 days. Since Amazon has a 83% marketshare with eBooks, I plan to publish that version on Amazon, with an exclusive. I’m purchasing my own ISBN so I can use it to publish my paperback on both Amazon and Barnes & Noble self publishing platforms. For my first novel I just published on Amazon. I sent a message to Amazon requesting a call back to make sure I cover the non-exclusive for the paperback, and nothing prohibits me from publishing on both sites. They sent me an email and wouldn’t call me back. Email just says to read info on their site. I’m a writer and Life Coach. I’m working with a graphic artist who will prepare the manuscript and upload my files, (like she did before), but it’s really the author’s responsibility to make sure I’m not giving anyone an exclusive to my paperback. I expect this fiction novel book to be a Best Seller, because of the title, subtitle, real life characters, and content. HIS NEW BEST FRIEND. A Powerful Story of Alcohol, Grief, Lifelong Friendships, & Romance. I always say, we all know someone who abuses alcohol. Your help would be appreciated. As the Help pages say, there is no exclusivity for paperback publishing with KDP. You can publish it anywhere you like at the same time as you publish through KDP. If you plan to use B&N with the same ISBN, it's recommended that you set up both versions through the step where you enter your ISBN, before publishing either. Otherwise it will look like a "used ISBN."

Do note that according to the Terms & Conditions only you can access your account. I hope you realize that allowing someone else into your account to upload your files could also allow them to do things like change banking info so all money would go to their bank. This is why Amazon regularly bans people from KDP for allowing anyone else to access their accounts, barring a Power of Attorney. Upload your own files. It's by far the easiest step.

Also note that although I'm sure your book is terrific, no book sells just on the basis of its quality. No one will know it exists! So get started on your marketing plan. Rather than hoping for a best seller, hope to recoup what you will have spent on cover design and the like. Then you won't be disappointed.

I dont think you can use the same ISBN for B&N and KDP. Barnes and Noble specifically told me no, and all the indie author forums said this as well. If someone knows of a case which works, they should post it, thats big news.

In fact, B&N FAQs say: "You will not be able to publish your book if there is a mismatch or if the ISBN is currently in use through wide distribution." https://help-press.barnesandnoble.com/hc/en-us/articles/5358254743963-ISBN-FAQs

As long as you don't enable KDP Expanded Distribution for that ISBN, you shouldn't have any issues. That would be wide distribution. An ISBN that is *only* on Amazon through KDP is not wide.

As @Sarah E. Holroyd (Top Contributor)  says, what they mean when they say that is that you'd used the ISBN previously, at Ingram or D2D, etc. --in "wide" distribution that would ALSO distribute right back at B&N. They don't mean Amazon. Our customers use the same ISBN for Amazon and B&N print all the time.

And no--the KDP support department isn't going to call you back to confirm something that's on the HELP pages. That's why they've eliminated so many of the call-back options. To encourage folks to read and remember the stuff in the FAQs. Makes for better data retention and I've found that on my site, too.

Both Amazon and B&N provide free ISBN’s, so there is no need for you to purchase an ISBN.

I've published about 15 books through KDP and all have been picked up by B&N and can be purchased through them. All are enrolled in Expanded Distribution and I used Amazon's free ISBN. Ingram Spark and Draft2Digital do require a different ISBN.

Ingram Spark and Draft2Digital do require a different ISBN.

Only if you've used the free KDP ISBN, or if you've enabled Expanded Distribution (which would completely negate any reason to use another platform that distributes at all).

Do My Coursework

Can I Do My Homework at Barnes & Noble?

There are a lot of reasons why I like it there. One of them is that they have free WiFi, which means that I can stay on top of my work while I’m in the library. I can also stay up late if I need to, and the teachers there are very helpful. One of their school guides came with my laptop, and now I’ll often use it when I’m traveling from class to class or just going over summer reading plans.

I’ll admit that I have occasionally used their storerooms for buying books and CDs, but those were usually secondhand. Usually, though, I find a good deal online. The free books and CDs are really convenient. They’re also really cheap. When I was just starting out, I would often raid the library and get these used books for next to nothing.

Today, I really appreciate the bargain prices that Barnes & Noble are willing to offer. If you ‘re interested in buying a book, or in a specific book, you can browse the inventory without having to leave the site. I’ve even seen books that I’d never seen at that price online.

Another advantage is that they are always on sale. Sometimes I’ll go over and buy a few things to keep from running out, and some times I’ll get them for free. One time I got a couple of pens and a notepad for almost half the price that I would have gotten them in college. I got one of my favorites for free as well. Sometimes, I can get some good bargains that I wouldn’t have otherwise.

One thing that I don’t really like about most traditional bookstores is that there are usually lines to wait in. Even if you do know the books that you’re looking for, you can still end up waiting in line. At Barnes & Noble, all the time is taken care of. You can sit down, start browsing, and come back when you’re ready. The staff is always helpful, and they make sure that the customer isn’t delayed too long.

One of the best parts of Barnes & Noble’s online experience is that you can take your book with you if you leave the site. That’s right, you can bring your books and study right there on the internet. Some people love this idea, but others hate it because they feel like they’re being monitored all the time. I don’t really care either way, as long as you get your class requirements done.

If you like the idea of learning while being able to go at your own pace, then Barnes & Noble online is probably a good place for you to start. I have learned a lot in just a few months time. The courses that I’ve taken have been a great investment of my time. I am now a better writer, and I am even starting to learn about some of the other subjects that I wanted to study. Getting an education like this is always a good choice.

If you have made up your mind about continuing your education, the next step is finding a class that you can attend. Fortunately, Barnes & Noble have a number of different classes that you can take. Some of them are better than others.

For example, the basic math class that I took was pretty good. But it never really turned me on, because it was pretty boring. Other classes like the creative writing class were interesting, and I actually started reading some of the books before class. It was really good to see what other students shared. You can even find other students online who have the same goals as you. And this can really help you become a better student.

Overall, I really enjoyed taking Barnes & Noble online. The only draw back I could think of was that I had to pay for my subscription. But it’s worth it if you really want to get an education. My advice is to search for free courses online if you really want to learn at home.

PSA: Barnes & Noble Is Giving Kids Free Books Again This Summer

Well, this is even better than a free pizza.

A child reads during the summer.

If your kids love reading and you love free books (honestly, who doesn’t?), here’s an important seasonal PSA: the Barnes and Noble Summer Reading program is about to start. Just like those days when you read your little heart out to earn a free Pizza Hut pizza , Barnes and Noble offers a pretty great prize for kiddos who complete their summer reading list: a new book!

Whether you're looking for the perfect colorful picture book for big kids or learning new ways to teach boundaries to little kids , the hunt for the right book to teach a lesson or share some empathy is always a valid pursuit — especially for bookworms. And all kids, even reluctant readers , enjoy earning a prize.

So, how does the program work? When does it run? Below, you'll find the details you need for a lovely, literary summer .

How does the Barnes and Noble Summer Reading program work?

There are a few stipulations, so let's start with the most important: The program is only available to first- through sixth-grade kids. Next, to earn their free book, your child must read and journal eight books on Barnes and Noble's official Summer Reading pamphlet, which you can pick up at literally any B&N. The book they earn is from a company-approved selection, but it's a pretty hefty selection.

"Wait, they want my kid to read and write? It'll never happen!" Take a deep breath. You can help your child fill out their "journal," although it's obviously good to hold them accountable for their work as they age. Plus, the journal doesn't require a complete play-by-play of each book. For every book your kid reads, there are precisely two small lines to fill out — Barnes and Noble only wants to know the title/author of the book and a note about your child's favorite part. It can be as simple as "When Pete sees his grandma" or "When Anne breaks the slate over Gilbert Blythe's head."

When does the program start?

The program runs July 1 through Aug. 31. That gives your kiddo a book-a-week timeline to hit the required quota, plus a little wiggle room for filling out the journal and getting it turned in at your local B&N in time.

What books can kids choose from?

The books available as your reader's prize vary by grade level, with almost a dozen to choose from in each level.

Grades 1 & 2

  • Band Camp! 1: All Together Now by Brian “Smitty” Smith
