What Do Fine Dining and Counseling Homework Have in Common?

There is a world-famous restaurant in Moderna, Italy. And in that world-famous restaurant, there is their most famous dish. And in that famous dish, there is only one main ingredient: Parmesan cheese. The secret to the dish is that Parmesan cheese appears in multiple ways: a Parmesan broth, a Parmesan soufflé, a Parmesan crisp, a Parmesan foam, etc. The chef wants the diner to taste Parmesan in its essence—to know and experience its flavor, so he presents one dish with different cooking techniques for that single ingredient. When you come away from eating that dish, you can say, without a doubt, “I know Parmesan cheese.”

Homework for a counselee should have the same experience. Counselors should have a focus for the session and then curate their homework so that the counselee encounters the truth in several different ways. Like the meticulous and brilliant chef, we strive for the “main ingredient” of God’s truth to sing out to the counselee so that they come back to the next session having experienced it in every aspect of their homework.

Pick a Truth

In counseling, we all too easily overwhelm the counselee with many truths. They may all be good, valid truths the counselee needs to hear, but a person can only process so many things at once. Or, perhaps we under-assign our homework such that we give them one passage to memorize and nothing else, so they won’t actually do their homework or won’t be thinking about it throughout the week. It is far better for the counselee if we pick one or two “main ingredients” for the session and make sure they know them deeply. Then, we want to use those same truths that will sink into their hearts via our homework elements. For example, if you have a counselee struggling with feeling left out in their church community, you may teach them about focusing on loving others rather than always thinking about themselves. So, the “Parmesan cheese” of your homework will be “consider the interests of others before your own.” This will be the main takeaway from homework that you’ll incorporate through several elements, and it will be the foundation for your next session.

Use Multiple Formats of Homework

With this truth in mind, we will now choose the formats to express the truth. Good homework will have multiple elements, and all those elements should sing out the theme truth for the week. Remember, the main ingredient of Parmesan was done in multiple formats, but Parmesan was always the focus of the dish. In the same way, counselors can use different homework elements to convey the same truth. Our example is “consider the interests of others as more important than your own,” so here is what my homework might look like for this counselee:

• Read Philippians 1-2 three times this week and answer the journaling questions I will email you.
• For each reading, write your own prayer of confession for the ways you are not like Christ, asking for forgiveness but also asking God to transform you to look like His Son.
• Listen to this sermon on Philippians 2 [1] and take notes to bring back for our discussion. What were 3-4 things that stood out to you from the teaching?
• This week, pick two people to text and ask them how you can pray for them practically. Then, set aside time to pray for them throughout the week. Of those two people, invite one to coffee (or both if you have the capacity!) to hear about their lives and ask them intentional questions.

With this homework, I have taken the truth of considering the interests of others as more important than self and woven it into multiple formats. When the counselee comes back to session, I want this truth to have been tasted by them in different ways so that they won’t forget it and they understand it. My prayer for this counselee is that the Lord would bless His Word in their hearts and grow and change them. Remember, our goal is to echo Psalm 34:8, “Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good!” May our counselees come back having tasted the truth of God’s Word in each element of their homework.

Homework doesn’t have to be difficult for us as counselors, but we must be careful not to overcomplicate or under-simplify it. Instead, we tailor our homework to the counselee and craft a homework assignment that sings out the beauty of God’s Word in a specific truth.

The newest addition to the Riviera’s suite of beach clubs is Maybourne La Plage, still relatively under-the-radar—though that’ll no doubt change in time. Acclaimed chef Mauro Colagreco is behind the menu at Maybourne’s private beach club, making it one of the best along this stretch of ancient coastline. Colagreco’s menu offers interesting takes on classic summer favorites: a jambon pata Negra is served with sweet, crunchy melon and a tart sherry vinegar gel; or the grilled octopus, with a tangy-sweet citrus butter, Salicornia and sea fennel. But perhaps the most exciting dishes are his desserts, specifically the alcoholic sorbets served up in pretty glass cups. With a summery, citrusy mojito, bitter Aperol spritz or a moreish piña colada on offer, there’s no better way to end a sunny day.

The French Open airs live on NBC Sports, Peacock and Tennis Channel through the women’s and men’s singles finals this weekend.

Already at the tournament, Rafael Nadal, a record 14-time singles champion at Roland Garros, lost in the first round in what may have been the last French Open match of his career.

No. 4 seed Alexander Zverev swept the 37-year-old Nadal 6-3, 7-6 (5), 6-3, dropping Nadal to 112-4 in his French Open career.

Nadal missed last year’s French Open with a left hip flexor injury and underwent surgery last June. In announcing his withdrawal before last year’s French Open, Nadal said that he will likely retire in the second half of 2024.

Top-ranked Novak Djokovic withdrew after tearing the meniscus in his right knee in a fourth round win over Argentine Francisco Cerundolo.

Djokovic owns a men’s record 24 Grand Slam singles titles, including three French Opens. But the 37-year-old Serb has yet to make a tournament final this year.

The men’s final will include neither Nadal nor Djokovic for the first time since 2009 (Roger Federer def. Robin Soderling). It will include none of Nadal, Djokovic and Federer for the first time since 2004 (Gaston Gaudio def. Guillermo Coria).

The women’s singles favorite is clear: Iga Świątek of Poland is ranked No. 1 in the world, has won the French Open three of the last four years and captured the two biggest clay-court titles this spring in Madrid and Rome.

She can become the fourth woman to win four French Opens in the professional era (since 1968) after Chris Evert (seven titles), Steffi Graf (six) and Justine Henin (four).

Świątek, who turned 23 last week, would be the youngest woman to achieve that feat if she does so this year.

Swiatek plays American Coco Gauff, the 2023 U.S. Open champion, in the semifinals.

What do Europeans and non-Baltimoreans know about Baltimore and U.S. politics? Well, at the French Open recently, a tennis tournament that is attended by people from across the world, I asked them.

The common theme around everyone’s knowledge of Baltimore seemed to be a positive one, focused on sports, and the recent Bridge Collapse. Not once was there a mention of crime or the failing education system. The conversation centered around the Baltimore Ravens and the Orioles, and their impact on sports.

“We have heard of Baltimore,” one couple told me. “I’ve seen it in some movies.”

The conversations were uplifting. They were also surprising, given the volatile news cycles that routinely focus on negative things.

Of course, when the conversation focused on America in general, that is when the discussion started to turn to a darker note. The general outlook on American politics and America in general was that it is “messy” and dysfunctional. Perhaps they’re not wrong, but then again, dysfunction seems to be the norm in worldwide politics nowadays, something that everybody from every nationality in attendance at the French Open is directly subjected to.

While we smiled, laughed, and made small talk about all the dysfunction in the world, it reminded me that maybe we all have a lot more in common than we think.
