PhD in Practice Program 2024

Deadline: Thursday, Feb 29, 2024, 11:59pm

The Academy of Fine  Arts  Vienna invites applications to its doctoral program for research in artistic practice. The PhD-in-Practice program provides participants with the opportunity to pursue their individual  arts -based research projects in a collective  learning  environment with a decidedly transdisciplinary and international bent. The program is coordinated by Renate Lorenz (Professor for  Art  and Research) and Anette Baldauf (Professor for Methodology and Epistemology). The invited lecturers and guests include Saidiya Hartman, Okwui Okpokwasili, Tina Campt, Eve Tuck, Otobong Nkanga, Fred Moten, Stefano Harney, Sharon Hayes, Nikita Dhawan, and Kapwani Kiwanga.

Program The PhD in Practice program is built on a concept of  arts -based research that relates to critical epistemologies, as they have been developed in the context of feminist, queer, postcolonial, ecological, postmarxist and other political and emancipatory projects. Inspired by these struggles, the program approaches  arts -based research as a space for the negotiation of social, political, cultural and economic conflicts. It refers to a history of research in the  arts  that has been developed in dialog with an array of different fields, including academia, activism, high  art  as much as pop and subculture. It thus privileges cultural/artistic productions that are concerned with a critique of injustice, social hierarchies and exclusions, and is interested in the development of heterotopic visions as well as activist interventions.

The program is designed for a duration of four years. During this time the participants will develop their projects artistically, theoretically, and analytically in coordination with the academic and artistic team of co-participants and faculty. Participants conceive, organize, document, and carry out independent and/or collaborative  arts -based research in a PhD supervision environment that is dedicated to transdisciplinary and international exchange.

Course work is mandatory during the first two years: so-called focus weeks take place one week per monthduring the academic calendar (October to January, March to June). During these weeks the participants and the PhD in Practice team meet for seminars, lectures, excursions and other research and study events. Participants are expected to take an active part in organizing the program, including the conceptualization and organization of workshops, guest lectures, exhibitions, etc.

Three PhD positions are available with a 75 percent employment contract with a duration of four years (payment according to B1, Section 49 Abs. 3KV, currently 2.684,10 EUR/month before tax, incl. health benefits). These positions fund the candidates in their completion of the PhD project; they require residency in Vienna and contributions to the administration, teaching and self-organisation of the PhD-in-Practice program.

Additionally, two PhD positions are available without funding or employment through the Academy (student-only, low residency scheme, does not require moving to Vienna).

Doctoral (PhD) programmes

Description.

The doctorate programme has a standard duration of 6 semesters. Aside from the completion of a doctoral thesis (dissertation), elective courses must be passed for a total credit of at least 18 ECTS from the current doctoral curriculum (standardised for all disciplines). Detailed information about this course selection can found in the doctoral curriculum. Credits earned and previously applied to attaining a master degree cannot be credited to doctoral studies.

The doctorate programme is concluded with a research presentation and thesis defense (Rigorosum) in front of an examination committee. According to the degree programme, the graduate is awarded the academic degree  Doctor of Social and Economic Sciences , abbreviated  Dr.rer.soc.oec.  or  Doctor of Engineering Sciences , abbreviated  Dr.techn .

Starting out from the outcomes of the 2017 Research Day, the framework conditions of the procedure for doctorate studies in the Faculty of Architecture and Planning was discussed by a working group of experts from a wide range of disciplines, and concrete proposals for a further development were developed. On the basis of the current regulations for study matters for the doctoral programme, the formats and processes documented in the  Guidelines Doctoral Programme 2020  focused on an improved networking of the candidates with one another, on more transparency both internally and externally, and stepped-up support of candidates. In practice this means:

  • In a  Colloquium  taking place twice a year, active candidates are invited to present an interim exposé and to follow this up by sharing their intermediate results in an informal talk afterwards. The occasion is intended as a networking encounter. This has the aim of encouraging knowledge-sharing between the candidates – beginners as well as advanced – also to create synergies and to enhance the visibility of the individual research projects on Faculty level.
  • The  Review  introduces a feedback option for the candidates. One year after inscription the candidate has the opportunity of presenting to a review jury consisting of Faculty members and external experts the developed research plan and thus gain support through a tangible resonance to their thesis project.
  • The  option of specific units of instruction and courses  for candidates aims to be adapted continually to current needs and followed up according to requirement. The corresponding resources will be made available to cover these.

The complete version of the Guidelines is available online.

Requirements

At least one of the following requirements must be fulfilled before enrolling a doctorate programme at TU Wien:

  • Completion of university master or teaching certification degree in a related discipline
  • Completion of equivalent master studies at an accredited Austrian or foreign institution of higher education
  • Completion of a master programme at a technical college accredited in accordance with the Austrian law governing such institutions  Fachhochschulgesetz § 5 Abs. 3

In cases not meeting the first stated condition, the applicant may be individually required to take supplemental courses in the doctorate programme.

In the latter two cases, the certificate of admission may include individual requirements for taking supplemental courses. The requirements for graduates of several (Austrian) college programmes are stipulated in  regulations  (available only in German) issued by the Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Economy. The extent of additionally required course credits can be up to 44 semester hours, equivalent to 60 ECTS points. For more information about application requirements, see the  Admission Office ; foreign students may also consult to the  Student Exchange Bureau  of the university’s student union (HTU).

Students must enroll in the doctoral programme at the  Admissions Office .

A  TU Wien account  is registered upon enrollment, which is maintained for the duration of doctoral studies. Since account authorisation takes a certain amount of time, early registration is recommended to ensure a problem-free programme start.

Doctoral Programme

Information:, in artistic research (phd in art).

The Artistic Research PhD Programme (PhD in Art) at the University of Applied Arts Vienna represent a postgraduate study programme in the field of art, in which independent artistic research is generated to contribute to the development and appreciation of the arts. These studies focus on artistic work that is regarded as the basis of knowledge production.

The Artistic Research PhD Programme (PhD in Art) is governed by topics and practices of artistic research. Contesting and reflecting upon the specific methods and production processes on use of the own artistic project represent a significant part to be incorporated in the research work. As a matter of principle, research in the sense of comprehensive knowledge production is defined as open to any outcome.

The doctoral programme consists of course and colloquia attendances and a dissertation in the form of an artistic research thesis.

The thesis in form of an artistic research project is to be produced, respectively a thesis in form of a number of artistic projects connected to each other as far as the research issue is concerned (artistic complex of work, groups of work).

The research outcome is to be documented in a suitable manner; it is to be contextualized and reflected upon. The conclusions of the artistic research are to be communicated in comprehensible form.

The thesis consists of an artistic work, as well as a presentation – in the meaning of a reflexive documentation – of the insights gained.

Graduate activities

The study programme enables graduates to accomplish independent artistic research achievements at the level of international standards, as well as to take on coordinating and leading roles.

The doctoral studies offer artists the opportunity to generate fresh knowledge regarding specific issues in the arts, to contextualize their artistic research and to adequately communicate the insights gained. They possess the abilities required to successfully hold their ground in both national and international artistic environments.

Throughout the programme, doctoral candidates are guided by internationally acclaimed scholars from all over the world, who are dedicated to support our students' academic journeys exploring scientific skills, data collection and analysis as well as academic publications among others.

In addition to that, IIS students have the opportunity to participate in the academic life at the DA through teaching activities, research assistantships and more. The small but vibrant research community at the DA provides PhD students with opportunities to connect with peers in advanced academic positions.

The doctoral programme is built on three modules: Module 1 at the Vienna School of International Studies (“DA”), Module 2 at the University of Vienna (UW) and Module 3 “Disssertation”.

  • For Module 1 (DA), doctoral students are required to complete coursework and sit field examinations in both disciplines. Coursework includes research seminars, workshops, courses relevant for their research topic and extensive reading courses focussing on their research disciplines.
  • For Module 2 (UW), students are required to develop their research project. To complete this module students are expected to hold a colloquium (“faculty public presentation”) to discuss their dissertation prospectus with the dissertation committee to gain approval for the project.
  • Module 3 focuses on research and writing of the doctoral thesis. The primary purpose of PhD study is the preparation and presentation of a substantial piece of original research in the form of a thesis.

Faith to Practice: Dr. Jack Menzagopian, the Panther Award Winner

May 15, 2024

phd in practice vienna

Set to graduate on May 17, 2024, Dr. Jack Menzagopian has been honored with this class’s Panther Award, which recognizes excellence in pharmacy leadership, promoting the pharmacy profession, and has exceptional community engagement and service.

phd in practice vienna

While science came naturally to him, one of the driving reasons to work with patients was his Catholic faith. “It’s the main reason I have a passion for helping others, whether it’s manifested as patient care or helping out my classmates for a variety of things. Trying to unite my faith with my career has helped maintain my drive to provide quality patient care.”

Dr. Menzagopian shared his passion for patient care with his classmates, and ensured he was an active member in Chapman Pharmacy’s community. Dr. Menzagopian tutored his classmates, and held several leadership positions such as Treasurer for the Vietnamese American Pharmacy Student Association and Historian for the Hispanic Association of Pharmacists, all while maintaining a GPA that landed him on the Dean’s List with High Honors for his cumulative time at Chapman. “I agreed to be an Supplemental Instructor and tutor because I get to help others in classes they find difficult. I agreed to take on my board positions and extracurricular activities because people asked for help and I was willing to provide it. That desire to help others put me in positions that have given me invaluable experiences, which helped drive my career development.”

phd in practice vienna

Reflecting on the broader role of pharmacists, Jack hopes that public awareness of pharmacists shifts into a more realistic and holistic view of the profession. “There’s a misconception to the general public that pharmacists count pills and only work in retail, and I fell into that before discovering where you could work as a pharmacist. My family always talks about how in the Middle East, where they grew up, the doctors don’t write prescriptions, they give you a diagnosis and tell you to ask the pharmacist what to take.”

After Dr. Menzagopian walks across the stage to receive his degree, he will begin a PGY-1 Residency at Loma Linda University where he looks forward to a wide variety of elective rotation spots and tailor his experience to align with his goals in academia, acute care, and infectious diseases.

Richard Welsh

Last year, Richard Welsh reported findings on the persistence of racial disparities in exclusionary school discipline practices. Despite suspensions declining over the past decade as schools reformed their policies, exclusionary disciplinary rates remained higher for African American students. Across the South, in-school suspensions (ISS) are particularly prevalent and disruptive to the education of racially minoritized students. Given these facts, Welsh has embarked on a new co-design process of ISS that leverages an existing research-practice partnership with a school district in Georgia to crack the code on truly resolving racial inequities in school discipline policies and practices.

Supported by a $474,178 grant from the William T. Grant Foundation and a $125,000 grant from the American Institutes of Research Equity Initiative, Welsh is leading a three-year project with the school district to understand the role of race and power in equity-centered research-practice partnerships, how the dynamics of the partnership affect partnership activities, and how these activities influence research use by school administrators, district leaders, and school board members.

“These are the three key decisionmakers who can advance racial equity in school districts through policies, programs, and personnel. They make decisions about codes of conduct, which disciplinary programs to implement, and who to hire, including behavioral specialists to support students’ social-emotional development,” said Welsh, associate professor of education and public policy at Vanderbilt Peabody College of education and human development.

“Improving the use of research evidence among education leaders via equity-centered research-practice partnerships can possibly lead to disruptive decisions necessary to addressing persistent racial inequities in school discipline. Also, turning the analytical lens on ourselves to examine how inequities might manifest in the partnership has implications for partnership and student outcomes,” Welsh added.

The research team will analyze their interviews with key decision makers, research-practice partnership primary investigators, and co-design team members. They will also observe school board meetings, school discipline committee meetings, and partnership meetings, as well as co-design workshops, district- and school-level documents, and materials to record the partnering process as well as the use of research evidence and disruptive decision-making. By engaging in cycles of disciplined inquiry to improve ISS processes, the partnership aims to reach its goal of improving youth outcomes.

The co-design process includes working with a team of school leaders and school personnel at three middle schools to analyze and reimagine their ISS process and infrastructure.
