About Gauhati University

Welcome to the Admission portal of Gauhati University. In these extraordinary times, we are trying to bring you the wonderful sense of belonging to a campus life. Gauhati Univetsity is now fully open without any Coronavirus-related restrictions. We however advise all who will visit the campus to maintain restrictions wherever necessary. 

The admission process to all postgraduate courses under GU and its affiliated colleges will start from 5th June, 2023 . The whole process will continue over next two and half months and will culminate in admission, by August 2023, of some 1800 very bright and meritorious students into over 45 postgraduate departments. Post pandemic, we hope to continue with normal academic calendar.

Gauhati University is one of the premier institutions of higher education in Northeast India and one of the most sought-after postgraduate institutions. We are also the most diversified in our academics among all other institutions of higher education in the Northeast.

Great Sanskrit scholar, Indologist and philanthropist Krishna Kanta Handiqui was the founder Vice Chancellor of Gauhati University. Some very illustrious sons and daughters of Assam have been our alumni which includes none other than Bharat Ratna Dr Bhupen Hazarika, noted litterateur and Gyanpeeth Award Winner Mamoni Raisom Goswami, eminent poet Dr Nirmal Prabha Bordoloi, famous academician Dr Maheswar Neog, prominent literary figure Dr Banikanta Kakati, academician, researcher of folklore, singer and lyricist Dr Birendra Nath Dutta to name a few. The Admission Process

Our entire admission process is a paper-less one and to be completed online. Admission to all Postgraduate Courses will be based on the the performance of the student in the Offline Entrance Test , which will be conducted during July 15-17, 2023 in ten (10) centres spread across the entire Northeast India.

Genecy Chopin

Master of Science in Criminology & Criminal Justice

Genecy’s “thesis highlights the negative impact of homelessness criminalization, by means of police enforcement, on the unhoused population, living in downtown Los Angeles, most of whom were Black or Latino/Hispanic and female.” Through her work, Genecy was able to give her “participants a meaningful experience” and “the opportunity to voice their concerns and opinions.” Genecy’s findings outline recommendations for “policy change and alternative means to address homelessness.”

Jack Hanson

Master of Science in Chemical Engineering

Jack engaged in multiphase research on 3D metal printing for prosthetics, pharmaceutical powders that lead to medicines, and “the interactions of water droplets and differing engineered surfaces commonly observed in various industrial applications.”  The goals of his studies are “to produce more efficient, efficacious, quality, and safely engineered products” that can reduce “wastefulness,” address the “detrimental impacts” of products on environments and provide “better medical solutions.”

Anise Mansour

Master of Science in Physics

Anise uses material science to address environmental justices that disproportionately impact low-income communities. “ I would like to address the benefits of materials research for a more equitable society. “Material science innovations are an important part of working toward correcting environmental justices,” as “physicists can make advancements to smaller, more energy efficient electronics with unique properties,” and create renewable energy technologies.

Tuyet-Suong Nguyen

Master of Science in Counseling Student Development in Higher Education

Tuyet-Suong’s “thesis research focuses on AAPI college students and how their experiences of acculturation, discrimination, and internalized racism affect their social justice views.” Her “research shows the importance of challenging misconceptions and learning more about how different factors affect the way AAPI college students view social justice. By understanding the experiences of AAPI college students, higher education professionals will have a better understanding of how to support this student population in a way that makes them feel safe and heard.”

Andriana Niederecker

Master of Arts in Linguistics, Language Documentation & Description

Andriana’s work is in “language documentation and description … to bring more awareness to endangered and underrepresented languages from around the world” and ensure that “the languages and community’s knowledge are recorded in history.” Through language documentation and description, “underrepresented and endangered communities” can be empowered “to sustain, revitalize, and reclaim their ethnic identity from forces that impacted them like colonialism, urbanization, globalization, or climate change.”

Alitzah Oros

Master of Art in Art History

Alitzah considers the impact of “body-based performance practices that utilize elements of pain and discomfort” to “tell the truth about colonial and neo-colonial atrocities…” “in a way that made visible communitarian resistance efforts advanced by indigenous and afro-indigenous communities in Guatemala, Chile, and parts of the Caribbean archipelago.”

Ariane Mica Segismundo

Master of Arts in Speech-Language Pathology

Ariane Mica investigated the barriers that students of color face in seeking a master’s degree in speech-language pathology. Ariane Mica’s work identifies several areas for support to address the needs of marginalized students to diversify her field and better serve her communities.

Evelyn Soto

Master of Arts in Political Science

Evelyn engages in scholarly activism that “strives to uplift the LGBTQ community and educate others about queer history and legal struggles for equality.” Specifically, Evelyn examined the narrow construction of gender and sexuality within the U.S Supreme Court opinion of Bostock v. Clayton Co. Evelyn’s research relies on a queer trans-feminist framework and shows that the opinion essentially erases “nonbinary individuals, bisexuals, and asexuals.” This has implications for queer trans-feminist jurisprudence and politics.

Azuki Umeda

Master of Fine Arts in Dance

Azuki created a performance entitled how i became kinder, & kinder that is a self-reflection revealing “a vulnerable side of being a first-generation Asian woman”, while also making her “feel comfortable in [her] own skin.” Through this work, Azuki discovered her “true voice” and is “excited to keep growing and learning more about the self…and fully embrace [her] diverse background.”

Aimee Vaquera

Ed.D Higher Ed & Leadership

Aimee relies on research to inform University policy and practices that support undocumented transfer students throughout the CSU. Through a qualitative study, Aimee explained that being undocumented is one of many intersecting identities that shape the campus they choose to attend, the relationships they create, their priorities, and how they seek-out and navigate resources. Her study helps eliminate equity gaps throughout the CSU.

Michelle Castillo

MS Biochemistry

Michelle studies Type 2 Diabetes (T2D), which “disproportionately affects minority groups and is increasingly affecting younger age groups.” Michelle studies glucose homeostasis in which “cells fail to respond to insulin signaling to reduce blood glucose” by investigating the effects of various isoforms on insulin resistance.  Michelle hopes that this work can help“ predict disease onset and develop effective treatments for T2D.”

Meike Nauta wins Overijssel PhD Award 2023

The 2023 Overijssel PhD Award goes to Meike Nauta who researched explainable artificial intelligence for her PhD. The award will be presented during the Dies Natalis, the 62nd anniversary of the University of Twente.

Artificial intelligence has become an integral part of our society, but too often computer models still work like a so-called black box. Information goes in and information comes out, but what exactly happens in between - inside the model - is unclear. That is why Nauta conducted research into methods for artificial intelligence to explain decisions itself.

"For many applications, knowing whether the model uses the right reasoning to arrive at a particular prediction is important. With explainable AI, questions like 'What did the model learn?' and 'How does the model arrive at such a prediction?' can be answered," says Nauta. Nauta developed a new model called ProtoTree. ProtoTree is a computer model that recognises images of two hundred bird species.

What is new about the model is that it simultaneously explains how it came to a decision. The model looks at a picture as if playing a kind of "Guess Who?". It looks for matching physical characteristics of a bird species - for example, in the presence of a red breast, a black wing and a black stripe near the eye, it recognises a Vermilion flycatcher. This way, a human can also track how the model arrives at a particular prediction.

Her dissertation was full of good examples of explainable artificial intelligence and its necessity. Nauta summarised it during her defence: "Power to the people without losing the power of AI." Nauta made a promising start to her career with her PhD. She currently works for Datacation. During her PhD trajectory, she already won several awards and has been in the media several times.

Overijssel PhD award

The Overijssel PhD award is an annual award given to a thesis of exceptional academic quality. Each UT faculty and research institute can nominate a thesis. The prize is co-sponsored by the Province of Overijssel and confers a cash prize of €5000 and a certificate.

Wake Forest University School of Divinity Names John E. Senior Assistant Dean of Vocational Formation and Doctoral Education

John E. Senior has been named Assistant Dean of Vocational Formation and Doctoral Education at Wake Forest University School of Divinity. In this new role, Senior will provide dynamic and collaborative leadership in shaping the direction and expansion of the school’s vocational formation programs and newly launched Doctor of Ministry degree program.

“Dr. Senior’s appointment reflects the School of Divinity’s ongoing dedication to fostering innovative and holistic approaches to graduate theological education,” said Corey D. B. Walker, Dean and Wake Forest Professor of the Humanities. “We look forward to the continued growth and success of our vocational formation programs and newly launched Doctor of Ministry program with his leadership.”

Senior brings a wealth of experience and expertise to his Assistant Dean role. His research and teaching focus on pastoral formation for ministry, ministry leadership in ecclesial and public settings, and the role of theological education in preparing leaders for diverse institutional contexts. Senior’s contributions to the School of Divinity’s approach to assisting students with vocational discernment and formation support critical components of the Wake Div Experience , a signature design of student resources available to students during each stage of engagement with the school.

As Assistant Dean of Vocational Formation and Doctoral Education, Senior will oversee strategic academic planning, development, and execution of the Doctor of Ministry program, ensuring alignment with the School of Divinity’s mission, learning goals, and accreditation standards. He will also lead efforts in professional development programming, vocational discernment resources, and experiential learning opportunities for master’s and doctoral students. The role will work to ensure that students receive high-quality, experiential learning opportunities integrating theological reflection, spiritual formation, and professional development.

“I am deeply honored to take on this new role,” said Senior. “Since its inception, the School of Divinity has upheld a broad vision of theological education, recognizing the vital contribution of theologically trained leaders across both traditional and non-traditional ministry contexts.  I am excited to collaborate with faculty, staff, and students in furthering our commitment to excellence in exploring the many ways Christian ministry emerges in our contemporary world.”

A distinguished scholar and ordained Teaching Elder in the Presbyterian Church (USA), Senior holds degrees from Bowdoin College, Harvard Divinity School, and Emory University, where he received his Ph.D. in Religious Studies.

2023 graduate student survey results now available

The biennial gradSERU survey examines graduate students’ experiences across the entire spectrum of their graduate career and found students largely pleased—but identified some areas for improvement. 

The 2023 gradSERU (Student Experiences in the Research University) survey results are now available. 

The survey found that while students reported feeling a strong sense of belonging at CU Boulder and are satisfied with the advising, education and research opportunities that they are receiving, there were still areas for improvement. These include compensation and general campus climate for students of color or those with disabilities. 

Administered in spring 2023, this biennial survey was designed to examine students’ experiences across the entire spectrum of their graduate career. It was sent to all enrolled graduate and professional students (excluding business administration and law students), totaling 3,848 students. Overall, 36% of students responded—up from 28% in 2021. 

"Thank you to everyone who responded to the gradSERU survey last spring. Your feedback is critical in allowing us to better understand the graduate student experience at CU Boulder,” said E. Scott Adler, the dean of the Graduate School and vice provost for graduate affairs.

Findings such as these help to shape our priorities and initiatives in the Graduate School and the wider university.

“We continuously work on the services and support that the university provides our graduate students, so it is imperative that we know more about who they are and their career goals. The gradSERU survey is administered every two years, with the first being in 2021 and the next in 2025. Since receiving the 2021 gradSERU results , the Graduate School has implemented several changes, including:

• Student concerns regarding cost of living and compensation have resulted in continued stipend increases, expanded benefits and the remission of mandatory fees. 
• Physical and mental well-being concerns of our graduate students led to embedded counselors in all schools and colleges, including the Graduate School. With the demand for ongoing counseling services increasing, the insurance co-pay for community providers was eliminated in this year’s insurance plan. 
• Aware of the importance of the advising relationship to graduate student well-being, the Graduate School’s new advising and mentoring initiative consists of a working group of cross-campus collaborators tasked with identifying and promoting best practices in mentoring. The Graduate School was also recently named a Sloan Center for Systemic Change , which will provide funding to further develop its mentoring program for both faculty and students. 
• The Graduate School hired a diversity, equity and inclusion faculty director to coordinate, promote and assist those efforts both within the college and in the departmental programs. The Graduate School also welcomed the Colorado Diversity Initiative , formerly in the Office of Diversity, Equity and Community Engagement (ODECE), which strives to recruit and retain a dynamic community of students from diverse backgrounds.

The gradSERU survey provides CU Boulder with various sources of information about students and programs, which is critical to its ongoing planning and decision making. The Graduate School is committed to keeping the graduate student community informed of its progress as it works on crucial issues identified in the data.
