An honorary doctorate degree is a special academic recognition conferred by a university or a degree-awarding institution, where they choose to waive the standard requirements that are typically associated with earning a degree.

This honorary degree, often referred to in Latin as honoris causa (“for the sake of the honour”) or ad honorem (“to the honour”), is usually granted in recognition of a person’s significant contributions to a particular field or society, even if the recipient has no prior affiliation with the academic institution or lacks previous higher education experience.

In some instances, this distinction is bestowed as a doctorate, commonly in fields like Business Administration, although it can also be awarded as a master’s degree. What Is an Honorary Doctorate Degree?

What is an honorary doctorate of humane letters.

An honorary degree is an award that can be conferred by any academic institution and is the highest level of academic achievement in the United States education system. Recipient selection is completely at the discretion of the university or college, but those selected to receive an honorary doctorate generally have distinguished accomplishments and high ideals that are in line with those of the school.

Honorary degrees have been in existence throughout history. According to the University of Wyoming , the first honorary doctorate was awarded to Lionel Woodville at Oxford University in England in the 1470s. Since then, honorary doctorates have become more common and frequently awarded.

The reason to award an honorary doctorate degree is to honor the work and accomplishments of a distinguished individual. According to the University of Berkeley Online, an honorary degree—also referred to as "honoris causa," or "for the sake of the honor" in Latin—is awarded for achievement in a specific field or contributions to society in general. A university typically chooses someone who reflects their ideals and who will serve as a positive representative of their school on a larger scale.

A doctorate is the most common degree awarded on an honorary basis, though honorary masters' degrees are also awarded. In addition, honorary doctorates can be awarded in any field, and the recipient does not have to have attended that university or have any affiliation with the institution.

Both the recipient and honoring institution can reap benefits from an honorary degree being awarded. For instance, the individual being honored can use the title list it on her résumé and curriculum vitae, while the institution enjoys the benefit of associating itself with a notable person. There is generally a ceremony to award an honorary degree, often during a graduation ceremony at a school.

Controversy

An honorary doctorate is often awarded as a response to a major donation or gift by an individual. This has caused some to criticize the practice because it appears that an individual can buy an honorary degree. Schools also award honorary degrees to celebrities, politicians and athletes—who may or may not represent their ideals—because they want the spotlight and media attention those individuals bring.

Guidelines for Granting Honorary Doctoral Degrees

What is an honorary doctorate.

The awarding of an honorary doctoral degree remains a significant and public acknowledgment that brings both prominence to the recipient and distinction to our institution as the conferrer. It continues to represent one of the highest commendations that the University can bestow. Thus, this distinction must be reserved exclusively for individuals of extraordinary achievements, adhering closely to the criteria established by the Board of Regents.

Recipients of honorary doctoral degrees continue to be united by a common factor: their exceptional achievements. Yet, the paths by which they have established such distinction, the disciplines in which they have excelled, and their scale of operations may differ significantly.

It is to be recognized that the potential for controversy surrounding a nominee alone should not be a sufficient cause for denying an honorary degree, provided that the nominee is otherwise deserving. Nonetheless, the University shall avoid awarding an honorary degree  if it may reasonably be expected to cause the institution shame or humiliation.

An honorary degree is an acknowledgment of an individual's success and contributions. Those who are awarded an honorary degree are entitled and encouraged to include these distinctions in their biographies, resumes, and curricula vitae. However, an honorary degree alone does not grant the recipient the right to claim the title of "Dr."

Eligibility Criteria for Honorary Degrees

  • People who have distinguished themselves in any discipline are eligible.
  • Members of academia, such as professors or administrators, must have significantly outperformed the established benchmarks of their discipline and profession.
  • Alumni are eligible if their contributions have significantly improved social well-being or have profoundly benefited the community, the University, Michigan, or beyond.

Just holding a prominent job, such as CEO of a private-sector corporation, is inadequate. People in such positions must have displayed visionary thinking or performed measures that have improved or altered the human situation. Gaining celebrity without making a substantial contribution to society is not an appropriate criteria.

Honorary degrees for philanthropic endeavors may be granted only if they are accompanied by a revolutionary vision that has already or has the potential to transform the University or the specific area that the philanthropy targets. Notably, honorary degrees are not to be bestowed solely for monetary contributions to the University.

  • Current full-time employees of Eastern Michigan University or current members of the Board of Regents are ineligible for honorary degrees.
  • The awarding of an honorary degree to an elected or appointed official does not imply the University's political support.
  • Honorees are not required to hold an academic degree in order to receive an honorary doctorate, however the majority are likely to have at least a bachelor's degree.
  • Mere affiliation with the University or the surrounding community is an insufficient basis for conferring an honorary degree.

Procedures for Nominating and Awarding Honorary Degrees

Nominations for honorary degrees must be submitted in writing and can come from members of the campus or external communities. These submissions should be made to the University's Academic Honors Committee or to the respective Deans of the Colleges. The chosen nominee from the Deans will then be forwarded to the University's Academic Honors Committee.

Nominations must include:

A comprehensive biographical sketch or curriculum vitae, detailing the candidate's academic background, professional training, notable activities, appointments, services, honors, and commendations over the course of their career.

Analytical and evaluative letters from individuals capable of assessing the candidate's accomplishments. While these letters should be written in non-technical language, they should convey the quality, uniqueness, breadth, and level of achievement of the candidate. For nationally or internationally recognized nominees, news releases or publications about the individual may suffice in lieu of letters.

Additional documents like the candidate's publications or news features about them.

The Honorary Degree Committee

The Honorary Degree Committee will review all proposals for honorary degrees. The committee may supplement their deliberations with additional information about the nominee, considering such information during their discussions. They may also conduct background checks as deemed appropriate. Nominations will be kept confidential to the extent permitted by law. All discussions within the committee will remain confidential.

Recommendations will be conveyed to the President and Provost while respecting the need for confidentiality whenever possible. The Provost will suggest an appropriate honorary degree for the nominee.

All nominations and honorary degree recommendations will be presented to the Board of Regents, or the designated committee, for approval.

The President or a designated representative will orchestrate the degree conferral. Conferrals will only take place in person during a Commencement or other suitable university-wide occasion.

Purdue University Honorary Degree

The Honorary Degree is an academic degree for which Purdue University has waived the usual requirements. This degree is conferred in a way to honor those who have established a national reputation of accomplishment in their careers. Very often, these persons have been previously honored by national and international organizations; their work has been cited by peers, again on a national level, and in all cases the candidates are recognized as leaders from a very broad perspective.

Universities like to associate themselves with exceptional individuals through the awarding of honorary doctorates, but this practice has often attracted controversy, creating headaches for university administrators.

Honorary doctorates highlight uncomfortable but important questions about the purpose of the university and its role in reinforcing and perpetuating social inequality.

The tradition and purpose of honorary doctorates

Honorary degrees (usually, though not always, doctorates) are awarded by universities to recognise outstanding achievement in a particular field, or service to the broader community.

While some universities have established separate honorary degrees, such as the “ Doctor of the University ” at Griffith University, most Australian universities have maintained the traditional system in which a range of degrees may be awarded honoris causa . This means no degree is actually undertaken, but the nominee receives the distinction in name anyway.

A committee, usually including members of the university’s senior executive, representatives of the university council and professors, receives nominations and determines which will be approved.

Universities gain a number of benefits from conferring honorary doctorates. The acceptance of an honorary degree by an exceptionally distinguished person often generates publicity and brings “reflected glory” on the university, in the words of one former Vice-Chancellor, preserved in the Monash University archives.

Honorary doctorates have long been used to foster advantageous connections with individuals, countries or organisations. The University of Oxford awarded the first recorded honorary doctorate in around 1478 to a brother-in-law of Edward IV in a clear attempt to “obtain the favour of a man with great influence”.

Honorary degrees have, unsurprisingly, usually been awarded to well-known individuals. The honouring of less-known individuals, and members of socially disadvantaged groups, has been much rarer.

Controversy and protest

In Australia, especially since the post-World War II dawn of federal funding for universities, honorary doctorates have occasioned public debate and sometimes protest.

In August 1962, the Australian National University declined to award an honorary degree to King Bhumibol of Thailand, reportedly because of his lack of academic qualifications . This created diplomatic embarrassment for the Australian government in the context of an impending royal visit.

The University of Melbourne stepped into the breach to make Bhumibol an Honorary Doctor of Laws in September 1962, which was judged a bad look in university circles. The Vice-Chancellor of Monash University, Louis Matheson, commented a little smugly in an internal memo that “There is no subject to which a university should bring more delicacy and sureness of touch than the selection of its honorary graduates”.

Matheson was forced to eat humble pie when in 1967 a furore erupted over his university’s honouring of Victorian Premier Henry Bolte, shortly after Bolte had sanctioned the controversial execution of Ronald Ryan .

Monash’s staff and student associations alike opposed the move, and the ceremony took place off-campus to minimise the risk of disruption by students. At a faux awards ceremony held by students on campus, a degree was awarded to a piglet . “No pedigree for pigs” was inscribed on the campus lawn.

After the Bolte row, Monash determined to never again honour a politician in office. Other universities have discovered since that doing so doesn’t always end well. The University of Adelaide’s award of an honorary doctorate to Foreign Minister Julie Bishop in 2017 was overshadowed by student protests about planned fee hikes and funding cuts for universities.

Undermining standards?

It is often said handing out “unearned” doctorates devalues the university’s highest academic qualification. The award of honorary doctorates to celebrities and especially sportspeople tends to raise eyebrows and draw bitter jokes from academics about when they should expect their honorary Olympic medal.

Swimmer Ian Thorpe was recognised in 2014 by Macquarie University for sport and philanthropy, the late Shane Warne had an honorary PhD , and cricketer Sir Don Bradman famously turned down more than one honorary doctorate.

Shane Warne with presenter's microphone

Places of privilege

Recent public discussion of honorary degrees has focused on the diversity of recipients. The University of Melbourne was suspended from a lucrative research funding program earlier this year after awarding honorary doctorates to a group of six white men.

The under-representation of women among honorary degree recipients was highlighted by equal opportunity policies in the late 1980s and early 1990s. In 1995 Monash acknowledged that since 1964 it had awarded honorary doctorates to 122 men and just 13 women. Along with other universities, it sought to correct this, aiming for equal gender representation among recipients - a target which remains far from being achieved .

The recent University of Melbourne controversy suggested to many that modern universities, despite their public relations nous, still carry echoes of the tone-deaf ivory tower.

Melbourne no doubt exposed itself to criticism through unfortunate optics and poor handling (the university claimed a larger group of intended recipients, including three women and an Indigenous man, were unable to attend the ceremony). However, the failure of such honours to represent the diversity of the community is a sector-wide problem.

Honorary doctorates have failed to cast off their function and reputation as a kind of academic peerage. They are uncomfortable reminders that our universities are still led and occupied, for the most part, by the socially privileged few.

Correction: this article originally referred to “John” Bradman rather than “Don”.

6 Free Honorary Doctorate Degrees Online

Several institutions are issuing free honorary doctorate degrees online which we will be bringing to your notice in this article. Honorary degree certifications are awarded to people in recognition of their life experiences, generosity, or major contributions to the schools, or society and not necessarily academic feats.

If you still want to put in some effort to acquire a degree, there are some free online degree courses for international students , provided by one of the best open universities, or even take advantage of some other online programs .

Thanks to these accredited universities offering free honorary doctorate degrees, it has made it possible for more people to receive these awards regardless of their financial stability, and geographical area.

Before we list these Honorary Doctorate Degrees, let’s first deeply understand what an honorary degree certificate is.

What is an Honorary Degree Certificate?

An honorary degree is given to a person as an honor, rather than through the completion of academic requirements.

They are mostly given to those who have made major contributions to a certain field or as a ‘Thank You’ to those who have made large donations to the institutions.

A person does not have to be an alumnus of the school; they receive awards based on generous and philanthropic actions towards the school.

These beneficiaries often make use of the title–Dr, though they may not have completed a doctoral program. It’s still not a bad idea to get a doctorate or an online Ph.D. program within a year .

What are Some of the Honorary Degrees that I can Find?

Here below are some examples of honorary doctorate degrees you can acquire.

  • Doctor of Humane Letters: This degree acknowledges academic distinction
  • Doctors of Laws: This degree is awarded to professionals in the field of law
  • Doctor of Science: This degree recognizes revolutionary scientific research and discovery
  • Doctor of Fine Arts: This degree is conferred primarily to musicians, actors, architects, and artists.
  • Doctor of Divinity: This degree is bestowed upon exceptional religious figures.

Let’s get started with this list

Free Honorary Doctorate Degrees Online

Here in this section, you’ll find some of the notable schools offering free honorary doctorate degrees.

Please do well to read to the end, perhaps you may become the next beneficiary.

1. Abide University Free Honorary Doctorate Degrees

Abide University issues free honorary doctorate degrees online without any study or qualifications.

They provide their beneficiaries with their degrees, who in turn study and contribute to their knowledge base, journals, and other publications and forums.

However, you should note that Abide University is not accredited.

2. Berkshire University

Berkshire University awards individuals with free honorary doctorate degrees online as an expression of the University’s appreciation of outstanding contributions made by the individual in certain areas.

They also have doctoral programs available for those who want to conduct advanced academic or professional studies. Just like Abide University, Berkshire University is also not accredited.

3. Global Human Peace University

Global Human Peace University honors both those who have excellent academic accomplishments and have important contributions to peace and human advancement. Their honorary doctorate program is free for eligible candidates.

One of their eligibility includes giving outstanding contributions in the sciences, humanities, and professions in which the University itself is active amongst other requirements. This is among the few free honorary doctorate degrees online that are provided by an accredited institution.

4. Newport University Free Honorary Doctorate Online Degrees

Newport University may not provide a totally free honorary doctorate because they use the program to raise funds to support the “Tuition Free Education for the Deprived Citizens around the World” project.

One of the reasons I love their honorary doctorate is because they believe that this honor shouldn’t only go to the rich and famous, but also to those who have contributed to their nation, society, education, and scientific work in a low geographic location.

That reminds me of some people who weren’t recognized for their achievements just because they didn’t make a news headline. Newport University Honorary Doctorate Degree is more like a solution to those people.

5. American Trinity University

American Trinity University now offers several paths to their doctorate degrees. Below is a list of free honorary doctorate degrees offered online by this university:

  • Doctors of Letters may be awarded for community achievements and a commitment to reconciling science and religion.
  • Doctor of Divinity (D.D) may be awarded for achievements in ministry and community service.
  • Legum Doctor in Cannon Law (LL.D.) may be awarded for achievements in policymaking favoring religion, or legislature, judicial, or government success in advocating religion and community service.

6. Abdul Kalam University

AKU doesn’t only offer free honorary doctorate degrees online, but it also offers all their bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees in all provided disciplines for free. They don’t charge you for tuition, for exams, not even for certificates, nor have any hidden fee.

It grants honorary degrees based on past accomplishments and competencies and will be done on an individual basis by qualified experts. Also, they are accredited so you don’t need to be scared of their programs.

Key Takeaway

One of the things you should avoid while getting a free or very cheap honorary doctorate online is that the institution is not a diploma mill – an institution that awards several educational degrees based on inferior education.

We ensured that none of the free honorary doctorate degrees on our list were diploma mills. That’s why they are very few.

Honorary degree recipients with Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor.

The University confers higher doctorates in Divinity (DD), Law (LLD), Science (ScD), Medical Science (MedScd), Letters (LittD) and Music (MusD). These are either:

  • full degrees by submission and assessment of major academic work
  • titular degrees honoris causa – honorary degrees

Other doctorates, such as the PhD, are conferred only by submission and assessment. When higher doctorates are conferred honoris causa the recipients are individuals of outstanding national, or usually international, achievement in their field. Normally no more than eight honorary degrees are conferred in a year. Recipients can be of any nationality.

Occasionally the Master of Arts degree (MA) is also conferred as a titular honorary degree. This degree is for those who have made exceptional and direct contributions to the life of the University or the City of Cambridge.

An honorary doctorate is the highest award conferred by the Prowess University System.  An honorary doctorate constitutes recognition of distinctive achievement that has added materially to knowledge and to the betterment of society.

At Prowess University to be considered for an honorary doctoral degree, there are specific criteria that individuals must meet, and there are a variety of doctorate that they may be awarded. There are also many non-honorary doctorate options that require advanced education.

Recipients of  Honorary Doctoral Degrees  do not earn the degree through academic achievements; rather they receive these awards based on generous and altruistic actions or lifetime accomplishments that benefit a community, nation, or humanity in general. Some schools allow candidates to apply for consideration for the degree, while others require nomination by a third party. Each university that confers honorary degrees establishes its own criteria for acceptance.

Recipients may receive more than one honorary degree, but never from the same school twice. A candidate does not necessarily have to be an alumnus of the awarding school, though many schools prefer to recognize their own graduates or individuals who have made a contribution to the school. Beneficiaries of the prized degree may use the title of ‘Doctor’ that the degree confers, although they have not completed a doctorate program.

Eligibility

An honorary doctorate may be awarded to an individual who has achieved acknowledged eminence in cultural affairs, in public service, or in a field of knowledge and scholarship, consistent with the ideals and purposes of the university.  An honorary doctorate recognizes the extraordinary and lasting distinction.  Nominees need not have been educated at or otherwise associated with the Prowess University before being conferred with the degree.

Honorary degrees are not awarded to encourage or reward financial contributions to the university.  However, honorary degrees may serve as a way of identifying with or honoring individuals who are highly regarded for achievements in their fields of endeavor. Administrative fee may be required from exempt nominees.

Degree Criteria

While many colleges and universities provide their own strict criteria for honorary candidates, at PU an honorary doctoral degree may only be given to an individual with sustained lifetime achievement, rather than Candidacy for the degree often represents a school’s prominent vocation or pursuit. However, Prowess put more emphasis on the prolonged bearing of an individual’s accomplishment.

The University requires the honoree to be present at the time the degree is conferred. Prowess allows honorary doctoral degrees to be awarded posthumously, and the degree may be accepted by the honoree’s family or colleagues.

Limitations

The nomination and review process is confidential. No disclosure is to be made until after Board of Regents review and the institution’s subsequent invitation to the nominee.

As a matter of policy, the Board generally limits to one the number of honorary degrees any individual may receive from the PU System.

Honorary degrees are to be awarded in person and/or in absentia only in exceptional cases. A degree may be awarded posthumously to a nominee if, after accepting the chancellor’s invitation, the nominee’s death occurs before the scheduled conferral.

In awarding honorary degrees, the Prowess University System does not assume any legal obligations. The recipients receive no honorarium.

The honoree shall have the right to refer to himself/herself as “doctor” and permit others to do so as well after being conferred an honorary doctoral degree of PU “honoris causa” as evidenced by a Testamur issued under the seal of the University.

Honorary Degree Types

Depending on the achievement, PU may present different types of honorary doctoral degrees. It may offer only a Doctor of Philosophy degree, or bestow a degree based on the accomplishments of the recipient. A few examples include:

  • Doctor of Humane Letters: acknowledging the academic distinction
  • Doctor of Laws:  awarded to professionals in the field of law
  • Doctor of Science:  recognizing revolutionary scientific research and discovery
  • Doctor of Business Administration: conferred on successful entrepreneurs
  • Doctor of Fine Arts:  conferred primarily to musicians, actors, architects, and artists
  • Doctor of Public Administration:  recognizing public servants, and politicians that have made a positive impact on humanity through good governance
  • Doctor of Divinity , bestowed upon exceptional religious figures, etc.

Degree Selection Process

Based on the type of honorary doctoral degree being awarded, the Honorary Award Committee reviews nominations. Candidates or nominating parties typically must submit a minimum of a nomination form and biography by a specified deadline through: [email protected].

The Honorary Award Committee reviews all documentation and presents its recommendations to the Board of Regents through the faculty. The school notifies accepted honorees and confers the degrees during regular commencement ceremonies. Meanwhile, the university also appreciates a sizable donation from honorary degree recipients.

Prowess University partners/representatives that nominate candidates for honorary doctorates shall do so in consistent with procedures, policies, and criteria developed by PU HAC.

At least two months prior to the commencement ceremony at which an honorary degree is to be conferred,  and at least three weeks prior to a regularly-scheduled Board of Regents meeting, the PU affiliates shall forward to the Secretary of the Board of Regents: (1) a letter from the PU representative indicating the name of the nominee(s) and expressing the president approval; (2) the curriculum vitae or resume of the nominee(s); and (3) letters of recommendation and other documentation of the contributions of the nominee and the merits of the nominee as an honorary degree recipient. It is the responsibility of the PU institution to exercise due diligence in ensuring that a nominee is of high moral character.

Upon the timely receipt of an honorary degree nomination from a PU affiliate, the Secretary shall: (1) review nominations to verify consistency with the requirements of this policy and to confirm, to the extent possible, that a nomination poses a low risk of reputation harm to the Prowess University; (2) if any concerns are identified, consult with the President of the Board of Regents as appropriate; (3) after any concerns are addressed, place the nomination on the agenda of the Board’s next regular meeting for Board of Regents review; and (4) notify the representative of a favorable review by the Board.

After the Board’s review, the President may invite the candidate to attend the commencement ceremony at which the degree is to be conferred.

If you wish to be considered for the honorary doctoral degree nomination of Prowess University, please send application request email to [email protected] or

18 Celebrities Who Have Received Honorary Doctorate Degrees (Including Taylor Swift, Céline Dion and More!)

Mel B joins fellow stars like Meryl Streep and Céline Dion on the list of famous honorary doctorate recipients

While celebrities often earn accolades like Oscars , Grammys and Emmys , a select few are celebrated with honorary doctorates in recognition of their significant impact on society and their industries.

Although these degrees don't carry any academic standing, they symbolize a tribute to the recipient's professional and intellectual contributions. And for stars who missed out on the college experience, receiving these honors offers a rare chance to don the cap and gown and walk the graduation stage.

From Taylor Swift to Tom Hanks , here are the well-known figures who accepted this prestigious honor.

Leeds Beckett University

Mel B spiced up her résumé in 2024 by receiving a honorary doctorate from her hometown college, Leeds Beckett University, which recognized her both as a "music icon" and a stalwart advocate for domestic abuse survivors.

In a heartfelt Instagram post , the former Spice Girl shared her gratitude for the university and the opportunity to further her education, explaining how her own experience of domestic abuse inspired her mission: "[Being a survivor] is all about one thing — helping survivors, breaking the silence and using my voice to help others."

And of course, true to her Scary Spice roots , she graduated in a custom gown lined with her signature leopard print.

Jessica Chastain

More than 20 years after earning her B.F.A., Oscar-winning actress Jessica Chastain returned to her alma mater, The Juilliard School, to accept an honorary doctorate for her "outstanding contributions" to film and theater.

"Dr. Chastain has a nice ring to it 🎓," she captioned an Instagram Reel . "Thank you @juilliardschool for this honor and for the custom hat 🙃 congrats class of 2024!"

Before receiving an honorary doctorate of arts from Harvard University, Tom Hanks delivered a powerful commencement speech for the 2023 graduating class, urging them to fight against the "indifference of a people who have been made weary by struggle."

“Indifference makes citizens into indentured servants held in labor by the despots and tyrants whose default setting is cynicism, who outlawed dissent and ban art and dialogue and books," the two-time Oscar winner said.

"Every day, every year and for every graduating class, there is a choice to be made," Hanks continued. "It’s the same option for all grown-ups who have to decide to be one of three types of Americans: those who embrace liberty and freedom for all, those who won’t or those who are indifferent. Only the first do the work of creating a more perfect union, a nation indivisible. The others get in the way.”

Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift doesn't need to tell you she's a "Mastermind," but her honorary Doctor of Fine Arts degree from NYU says it all!

In May 2022, the Grammy winner accepted the honor and delivered her first commencement speech , sharing some of her "life hacks" instead of "advice."

"Life can be heavy, especially if you try to carry it all at once. Part of growing up and moving into new chapters of your life is about catch and release," she told the crowd. "Secondly, learn to live alongside cringe."

Swift also encouraged the graduating classes of 2020, 2021 and 2022 to trust their instincts, saying: "You will screw it up sometimes. So will I. And when I do, you will most likely read about it on the internet. Hard things will happen to us. We will recover. We will learn from it. We will grow more resilient because of it."

Michelle Yeoh

A year before clinching her Best Actress Oscar, Everything Everywhere All at Once star Michelle Yeoh received an honorary doctorate of fine arts from the American Film Institute, where she delivered a speech about the power of failure.

Recalling some unsuccessful on-set stunts, Yeoh emphasized how those moments "taught me perseverance, grit and humility."

"You see, after I learned how to fall, I could learn how to fly," she explained. "What I want to share with you today is that our slips and stumbles are the secrets to our flight. Every person who has ever stepped onto this stage has had their fair share of crashes. Trust me, that's part of the deal. Success without failure is called luck. It cannot really be repeated or relied upon. It is from failure, we learn and grow."

Rock and roll singer and medical tutor Uncle Vic receives UNSW honorary degree

ABC Radio Sydney

Topic: Indigenous Music

Warning: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander readers are advised that this article contains the name and images of a person who has died.

Rock and roll singer-turned-teacher Vic Simms, known as Uncle Vic, never thought he would get a university degree.

But last month, in front of family, colleagues and students, the Bidjigal elder accepted the University of New South Wales' highest achievement — an honorary doctorate in recognition of his contribution to his community.

"I've had the school of hard knocks, and I don't don't take things for granted," he says.

"I earned my stripes, and to be given this award, it's just an honour to me."

Best known for his music career, which included releasing the first-ever album recorded in an Australian prison in 1973 and touring with Jimmy Little, Uncle Vic began teaching at the university 15 years ago.

Five years ago he was asked to share his cultural expertise with first-year medicine students.

Since then he has taught more than 1,200 students at the Faculty of Medicine and Health.

"You just say, 'Listen, I'm here to teach you and to give you the opportunity to learn what it's like to be an Aboriginal in urban Australia'," he says.

From poverty to the stage

Uncle Vic takes students to Bidjigal country, where he was born in 1946 on La Perouse Mission in Sydney's south-east.

One of 10 children, he faced poverty and restrictions such as curfews and being told which streets he was and wasn't allowed to be seen.

"My father used to carry golf clubs for rich white people to put a loaf of bread on the table," he remembers.

Post-football social events provided a break from all that, allowing the community to gather, sing and dance.

One night, when the band's singer went on a break and asked for someone in the crowd to take the microphone for 10 minutes, Uncle Vic's friends pointed at him.

"I just happened to be at the right time at the right place," he says.

That led to going on tour with the band and his music career soon took off.

At just 11 years old, he performed at the Manly Jazzorama Music Festival and was soon singing alongside the likes of Shirley Bassey, Johnny O'Keefe, Col Joye, and Robie Porter — even being on the same record label as Elvis Presley.

"That decision has taken me around the world over many years," he says.

But by the early 70s, he feared his music career was over.

Driven by alcoholism, he committed a robbery that he says went badly wrong and he was sent to Bathurst jail.

It turned out that music would be key to his survival behind bars.

"Basically, I sang my way out of jail," he told ABC program Message Stick in 2005 which documented his tour with the legendary Jimmy Little.

A song he recorded on tape behind bars, found its way to US label RCA Records, which offered him a deal.

The resulting album, Loner, composed entirely from inside the Bathurst jail, is widely considered one of the first Aboriginal protest albums and sparked a tour of other prisons.

Describing his life as a "fractured fairytale", he credits music with taking him around the world and "showing me a better life".

In 2001 he was honoured with a Deadly Award for Outstanding Contribution to Aboriginal Music and in 2009, Loner was inducted into the National Film and Sound Archive registry.

'An encyclopedia of history, love and harmony'

Fifteen years ago he began his teaching career at UNSW, providing cultural advice, guidance and education sessions.

"Inside of here," he says pointing to his head, "is an encyclopedia of the history, love and harmony and strength, [the basis of] what I do in my day-to-day life."

The students also learn how intergenerational trauma impacts First Nations communities today.

UNSW Pro Vice-Chancellor Indigenous Engagement and Research, Brett Biles, says Uncle Vic helps to better prepare students to provide care to First Nations people.

"By undertaking specific training in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health and wellbeing, medical students are better prepared to deliver culturally appropriate care, address significant health disparities, and fulfil their professional responsibilities to ensure Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients can access health care that is free of racism," Dr Biles says.

Uncle Vic says it is the first time many international students learn about Australia's Indigenous history.

"If they didn't come to this university they would never know the history."

It's not just the students who are learning — Uncle Vic has gained knowledge from them as well.

"They taught me about where they came from and how it was for them to come through life."

Uncle Vic hopes to continue his contribution to UNSW and inspire others in his community.

"People sort of look up to me and say, 'All right, well if he could do it, I could do it'. It gives them encouragement."
