2024 Homework Help Site Reviews

24 Hour Answers Review

24HourAnswers offers academic support through live tutoring and asynchronous homework help. With 24/7 availability, students can stick to their budget and receive assistance in various subjects. Tutors, often holding advanced degrees, provide live or written solutions, and the platform has a top-notch reputation with a 4.9-star average from student reviews, earning it a perfect 5-star rating here as our top educational resource.

Khan Academy Review

Khan Academy stands out as a non-profit program for homework help. The company offers free education with practice exercises and instructional videos for K-12 and college-level subjects. Its gamified approach, personalized learning, and AI tutoring tool Khanmigo, make it an accessible and valuable resource, earning it an excellent rating. While lacking person-to-person tutoring, Khan Academy's solid reputation and global impact position it as the best free solution for homework help.

Chegg Review

Chegg provides academic services that include textbook rentals and homework help through Chegg Study. The platform offers quick answers to questions, video explanations, and expert Q&As, designed for high school and college students. With an affordable subscription cost of $14.95 per month and a 7-day refund policy, Chegg has improved its BBB rating to "B+". It earns a solid rating in our review.

The Princeton Review Review

The Princeton Review, with over 35 years of experience, specializes in test prep for exams like GRE, SAT, and more. Offering one-on-one tutoring in over 80 subjects, it provides a free trial of 7 days and a grade improvement guarantee for K-12 students. Despite its higher cost, The Princeton Review has an "A-" BBB rating and positive reviews, making it suitable for those preferring synchronous tutoring sessions. Though it may not cater to all learning styles, The Princeton Review's reliability and prestige earn it a high rating.

Course Hero Review

Course Hero stands out as an AI-powered homework help platform, offering 24/7 assistance through an AI assistant or certified experts. The platform provides a one-stop shop with study resources, expert help, and an online library, designed for high school and college-level questions across 100+ subjects. However, mixed reviews from customers and tutors, coupled with limitations on free questions, contribute to a mid-range score.

Wyzant Review

Wyzant, founded in 2005, offers one-on-one learning with a focus on customer flexibility for online or in-person sessions. While its homework help options may not be as robust, the "ask a question" service is free. However, recent mixed reviews and concerns about potential overcharging contribute to Wyzant's mid-tier rating in our review.

Infoplease Review

Infoplease is a free online resource that claims to offer a comprehensive learning platform with encyclopedia, dictionary, and atlas features. However, it faces criticism for a cluttered interface, grammatical errors, and a lack of on-staff tutors. Despite its good ratings for causal research, Infoplease receives a below-average rating in our review as it proves challenging for specific homework queries and lacks the organization and assistance found in higher-rated options.

Pear Deck Learning Review

Pear Deck Learning, formerly TutorMe, is an online tutoring platform focusing on personalized, one-on-one virtual lessons for homework help. However, the rebranded site lacks transparency, hiding details behind a paywall, and has lower tutor requirements than most rival services. With no clear pricing, limited information, and a lack of reputation due to the recent rebrand, Pear Deck Learning receives a lower rating. We have concerns about its trustworthiness and effectiveness compared to other homework help options.

Top Homework Helper Review

Top Homework Helper offers solutions to homework challenges with an emphasis on providing answers quickly. The process involves submitting questions, making payments, and receiving solutions from tutors. However, the lack of pricing transparency, negative reviews citing grammatical errors, and the absence of BBB recognition have us questioning the platform's reliability. For these reasons, top Homework Helper earns a low rating in our review.

Quiz+ Review

Quiz+ offers a wide range of study tools like quizzes and flashcards across 30 academic fields, making it useful (in theory) for test preparation, especially for independent learners. However, the lack of on-staff tutors, unclear pricing, a strict no-refund policy, and recent customer concerns regarding billing and free trial duration contribute to Quiz+ receiving a low rating in our review. Consider carefully before choosing this business as it is not as useful or transparent compared to higher-rated alternatives.

There are tons of exceptional online resources and websites that stand ready to assist students with their homework at any time. These platforms cover hundreds of subjects - ranging from math and science to literature, music, art, and even specialized college-level courses. The beauty of these online lifesavers lies in their ability to connect students with experts who are adept at navigating the intricacies of academic challenges.

Late-night study sessions can quickly turn into a frustrating experience when you're grappling with a perplexing assignment. And, not all subjects are easily comprehensible. Every student has a unique learning style. When the classroom explanations fail to provide clarity, the homework can become an uphill battle.

Online homework help services offer tons of different learning tools and features. Imagine having access to personalized tutors, vocabulary flashcards, textbook solutions, searchable essays, and much more. The primary focus isn't merely on solving homework problems but on providing comprehensive, step-by-step assistance that aids in grasping the fundamental concepts.

Whether you're looking for one-on-one help in a tutoring session or a database to find answers specific to your textbook, there's a service out there that will serve your study needs. The best part is that many of these services operate 24/7, so you have a reliable homework lifeline whenever the need arises.

Since there are so many sites out there that offer homework help, making the right choice can be daunting. Before committing to a membership or a pay-per-question service, be sure to check out these criteria:

  • Subjects offered. Make sure the platform you choose has the subjects and level that you need to get your homework questions answered. Some only offer K-12 whereas others offer all grade levels (even for graduate degrees).
  • Cost. Pricing can play a huge role in which service you select. While some companies offer free homework help services, others charge per service or per month. Knowing how much you want to spend and balancing that with the quality of homework help can make sure you find the right company.
  • Reputation. Real user experiences can provide valuable insights into whether or not a service is right for you. Are other students succeeding at getting answers to their homework problems? Are there concerns about payments or security? Check customer reviews and a company's reputation with the Better Business Bureau to get a clear look at how each business operates for students just like you.
  • Variety of services. Everyone has a different learning style. Make sure that your chosen platform has the learning tools you need. Are you looking for resources, such as video tutorials, interactive quizzes, and practice problems? Or do you want one-on-one interaction with a tutor to help explain the homework to you? Whether you want synchronous learning opportunities or asynchronous work at any time of the day, make sure the platform you choose supports that learning style.

To make sure you find the best homework help on the market today, Top Consumer Reviews has meticulously reviewed and ranked the top services. We hope this helps you stop worrying about how you're going to complete your complex homework and begin focusing on getting the answers you need to move forward with your course or degree program. Happy learning!

General Education

feature-app-homework-cc0

We know that homework can be a real drag. It’s time-consuming, and can be difficult to complete all on your own. So, what can you do if you’re struggling?

You might try looking online or in the app store! If you’ve already looked around you probably know that there are tons of homework sites for students and homework apps out there that all say they can help you improve your grades and pass your classes. But, can you trust them? And what are the best apps for homework help?

Below, we answer these questions and more about homework help apps–free and paid . We’ll go over:

  • The basics of homework help apps
  • The cost of homework help apps
  • The five best apps for homework help
  • The pros and cons of using apps that help you with homework
  • The line between “learning” and “cheating” when using apps that help you with homework
  • Tips for getting the most out of homework sites for students

So let’s jump in!

body-important

The Basics About Apps that Help You With Homework–Free and Paid

The bottom line is, homework sites and homework apps are intended to help you complete your take-home assignments successfully. They provide assistance that ranges from answering questions you submit through a portal all the way to one-on-one tutoring, depending on the help you need!

The big plus for both homework help apps and websites is that they usually offer help on-demand. So if you can’t make it to after school tutoring, or if you're studying late into the night (it happens!), you can still access the help you need!

If you’re specifically looking for an answer to the question: “what is the best homework help website ?,” you can check out our article on those here! [LINK COMING SOON]

What’s the Difference Between a Homework Help Website and an App?

So if they’re both designed to give you a little boost with your take-home assignments, what makes homework apps and websites different from one another? First off, homework help websites are optimized to be used on a desktop, while apps are designed to be run natively on mobile devices. So depending on which devices you have access to, you may decide to use a website instead of an app…or vice versa!

The other big difference between homework help apps and websites is that they sometimes offer different features. For instance, with the Photomath app, you’ll be able to submit photos of math problems instead of having to type everything out, which is easier to do by using an app on your phone.

If you’re trying to decide whether to go with a website or app, the good news is that you may not have to. Some homework help websites also have companion apps, so you can have the best of both worlds!

What Makes a Homework Help App Worth Using

Apps that help you with homework should ideally help you actually learn the material you’re struggling with, and/or help you turn in your work on time. Most of the best apps for homework help allow you to ask questions and provide answers and explanations almost immediately. And like we mentioned earlier, many of these apps let you send a picture of a question or problem instead of writing it all out.

But homework help apps offer more than just quick answers and explanations for your assignment questions. They also offer things like educational videos, lectures, tutorials, practice tests and quizzes, math solving tools, proofreading services, and even Q&A with experts.

And the best part is, most offer these services 24/7!

What You Should Look Out For

When it comes to homework help, there are lots–and we mean lots –of apps willing to prey on desperate students. Before you download any apps (and especially before you pay to sign up for any services), read reviews of the app to ensure you’re working with a legitimate company.

Keep in mind: the more a company advertises help that seems like cheating, the more likely it is to be a scam. Actual subject matter experts aren’t likely to work with those companies. Remember, the best apps for homework help are going to help you learn the concepts needed to successfully complete your homework on your own.

If you’re not sure if an app is legitimate, you can also check to see if the app has an honor code about using their services ethically , like this one from Brainly. (We’ll go over the difference between “homework help” and “cheating” in more detail a little later!)

How Expensive Are Apps That Help You With Homework?

A word to the wise: just because a homework help app costs money doesn’t mean it’s a good service. And, just because a homework help app is free doesn’t mean the help isn’t high quality. To find the best apps, you have to take a close look at the quality and types of information they provide!

Most of the apps out there allow you to download them for free, and provide at least some free services–such as a couple of free questions and answers. Additional services or subscriptions are then charged as in-app purchases. When it comes to in-app purchases and subscriptions for homework help, the prices vary depending on the amount of services you want to subscribe to. Subscriptions can cost anywhere from $2 to around $60 dollars per month, with the most expensive app subscriptions including some tutoring (which is usually only available through homework help websites.)

body_fivefingers

The 5 Best Apps for Homework Help

Okay, now that you’re up to speed on what these apps are and how they can help you, we’ll run you through the best five apps you can use.

Keep in mind that even though we recommend all of these apps, they tend to excel at different things. We’ve broken these apps into categories so that you can pick the best one for your needs!

Best Free Homework Help App: Khan Academy

  • Price: Free!
  • Best for: Practicing tough material

While there are lots of free homework help apps out there, this is our favorite because it actually supports learning, rather than just providing answers. The Khan Academy app works like the website, and offers the same services. It’s full of information and can be personalized to suit your educational needs.

After you download the app, you choose which courses you need to study, and Khan Academy sets up a personal dashboard of instructional videos, practice exercises, and quizzes –with both correct and incorrect answer explanations–so you can learn at your own pace.

As an added bonus, it covers more course topics than many other homework help apps, including several AP classes.

Best Paid Homework Help App: Brainly

  • Price: $18 for a 6 month subscription, $24 for a year
  • Best for: 24/7 homework assistance

Brainly is free to download and allows you to type in questions (or snap a pic) and get answers and explanations from both fellow students and teachers. Plus, subject matter experts and moderators verify answers daily, so you know you’re getting quality solutions! The downside is that you’re limited to two free answers per question and have to watch ads for more if you don’t pay for a subscription.

That said, their subscription fees average around only $2 per month, making this a particularly affordable option if you’re looking for homework help on a budget. Brainly subscriptions not only cover unlimited answers and explanations on a wide variety of school subjects (including Art and World Languages which aren’t always included in other apps), they also provide tutoring in Math and Physics!

body-photomath-logo-2

Best App for Math Homework Help: Photomath

  • Price: Free (or up to $59.99 per year for premium services)
  • Best for: Explaining solutions to math problems

This app allows you to take a picture of a math problem, and instantly pulls up a step-by-step solution, as well as a detailed explanation of the concept. Photomath subscription services also include animated videos that break down mathematical concepts–all the way up to advanced Calculus!--to help you better understand and remember them.

The basic textbook solution service is free, but for an additional fee you can get extra study tools, access to one-on-one tutoring, and additional strategies for solving common math problems.

Best App for STEM and English Homework Help: Studypool

  • Price: Varies; you’ll pay for each question you submit
  • Best for: Science and English homework help in one app

When it comes to apps for science and English homework help, there aren’t lots of great resources out there, much less out there all in one place. While Grammarly is a good service for proofreading, SparkNotes has some decent summaries, and Khan Academy covers science, the best of the bunch if you need help with both subjects Studypool. Instead of using lots of different apps for STEM and English help, they’re combined together here! But while Studypool has great reviews, there are some downsides as well.

The Studypool Q&A model is a little different than other homework help apps. After you create a free account, you ask questions, and tutors submit bids to answer them. You’ll be able to select the tutor–and price point–that works for you, then you’ll pay to have your homework question answered. You can also pay a small fee to access thousands of notes, lectures, and other documents that top tutors have uploaded.

The downside to Studypool is that the pricing is not transparent . There’s no way to plan for how much your homework help will cost, especially if you have lots of questions! It’s also not clear how they choose their tutors, so you’ll need to be careful when you decide who you’d like to answer your homework questions. That said, if you only need a few questions answered per month, this could be cheaper than other monthly subscription services.

Best Homework Scheduling App: MyStudyLife

  • Best for: Keeping track of your schedule and deadlines

If the reason you’re looking for homework help is less about finding answers to questions and more about needing assistance with organization and time-management , MyStudyLife is a great option. This is a cross-platform planner that allows you to store your class schedule, upcoming tests, and homework assignments in the cloud so you can access it all wherever you are, and on any device.

One of the unique things about it is that it easily works for daily or weekly rotating class schedules that can get confusing, helping you keep track of when you need to finish your homework based on your changing schedule. You can get reminders for upcoming classes and assignments as well as past-due homework and any revisions you may need to do. It can even let you know when you need to start studying for a big test!

Best of all, you can actually schedule assignments and study sessions for multiple nights, and specify how much of the task you got done each night. That way you’ll know how much additional time you’ll need to spend!

body-magic-wand-cc0

While homework apps might seem like magic, it's important to weigh the pros and cons before you commit to one.

What Are the Pros and Cons of Using Homework Help Apps?

Homework help apps can be useful tools if you’re struggling in any of your classes. But there are a few problems you might run into if you don’t use them ethically and responsibly.

Below we’ll cover some of the good and the not-so-good parts of using homework help apps to complete your take-home assignments.

3 Pros of Using Homework Help Apps

Let’s start with the pros of using apps for homework help.

Pro 1: All-Around Better Grades

This is undeniably the main pro and the reason apps that help you with homework are so popular with students. Not only can you potentially get better grades on individual assignments, because they help you learn tricky concepts, you can also earn better grades overall .

Just keep in mind that if you want better grades you have to actually learn the material you’re studying, not just find easy answers. So be sure to use apps that provide good explanations . That way you’ll have the mental tools you need to succeed on your class exams and on standardized tests for college.

Pro 2: Flexibility

It’s hard to beat homework help that you can access anywhere you are from your mobile device. You can also get assistance whenever you need it since the best apps offer their services 24/7. This is especially useful for students who need to study during hours when their free school resources aren’t available because of extracurriculars, jobs, or family obligations.

If you need convenient and flexible homework help or tutoring services to fit your schedule, apps can be your go-to resource.

Pro 3: Individualized Learning

Sometimes the kind of learner you are doesn’t match your teacher’s style of teaching. Or maybe the pace of a class is a little too fast or too slow for your tastes. Homework apps can help by allowing you to learn at your own speed and in ways that support your own learning style.

You can use their features, such as educational videos, 24/7 conversations with experts and peers, and tutorials to review concepts you may have forgotten. These apps can also let you dive deeper into topics or subjects you enjoy! With homework help apps, you get to choose what you need to learn and how you learn it.

body-red-x-false-stop

3 Cons of Using Homework Help Apps

Next, let’s look at the cons of homework help apps.

Con 1: Questionable Info

Unfortunately there are lots of less-than-reliable homework help apps out there. They might not hire actual experts in their fields to provide answers and create study tools, or they rely on user-submitted answers that they don’t verify. In those cases, you might not be getting the accurate, thorough, and up-to-date answers you need to really learn.

In addition to the possibility of running into plain-old wrong answers, even the best apps sometimes just won’t have a specific answer you need. This could be because you’re enrolled in an advanced class the app doesn’t really cover or because of the algorithm or chatbot a particular app uses.

If that’s the case , your best bet will likely be to talk to your teacher or a free tutor (if your school provides them) to get help answering your question.

Con 2: Information Overload

While having tons of information at your fingertips can be helpful, the sheer amount and variety of videos, tutorials, expert answers, and resources a homework app provides can be overwhelming . It’s also easy to get sucked into a research rabbit-hole where you learn new things but don’t actually get your work done. This is especially true for students who tend to be easily distracted.

Additionally, you may be learning to do things differently than you’ve learned them in class , which could cause problems. For example, if your math teacher asks you to solve a problem one way, but you learned to do it differently through an app, you could get confused come test time!

Con 3: Cutting Corners

There are a lot of apps out there that bill themselves as “the best app for cheating.” They allow users to type in a question or take a picture, then instantly provide an answer without any explanation of the material. Many of these are scams or provide unreliable answers, but not all. Some apps are legitimate and provide quick and easy answers that could allow you to do your whole homework assignment in minutes.

The problem is that even though taking shortcuts on homework to save time is tempting, it can keep you from really learning. The point of practicing concepts and skills is so you develop them and can access them whenever you need to. This is especially true if skills build on one another, like in a math or English class.

Sometimes s truggling with an assignment or question, trying, failing, then trying again until you succeed can help you learn difficult material. If you don’t let yourself really try, and instead take too many shortcuts, you may end up behind.

body-cheat-cheating-cc0

When Does “Help” Become “Cheating”?

When it comes to using homework help apps, sometimes the difference between “help” and “cheating” is really clear. For example, if you’re using an app to get answers while you’re taking a test, that’s definitely cheating . But what if you’re struggling with a math problem and need to know the correct answer so you can work backwards to learn the process? Is that “cheating” or is it “help?”

The truth is, not everyone agrees on when “help” crosses the line into “cheating .” If you’re not sure, you can always check with your teacher to see what they think about a particular type of help you want to get. That said, a general rule of thumb to keep in mind is to make sure that the assignment you turn in for credit is authentically yours . It needs to demonstrate your own thoughts and your own current abilities. Remember: the point of every homework assignment is to 1) help you learn something, and 2) show what you’ve learned.

So if you’re relying on an app to do all of the work for you, there’s a good chance using it might constitute cheating.

Think of it this way: say you’re studying for an upcoming math test, and are stumped by a few of the questions on the study guide. Even though you’ve tried and tried, you can’t seem to get the right answer because you can’t remember the steps to take. Using an app to explain the steps as you’re studying is “help.” Using the app to get answers so you can make a good homework grade is “cheating.”

The same is true for other subjects: brainstorming essay ideas with others or looking online for inspiration is “help” as long as you write the essay yourself. Having someone read it and give you feedback about what you need to change is also “help,” provided you’re the one that makes the changes later.

But copying all or part of an essay you find online or having someone write (or rewrite) the whole thing for you would be “cheating.” Ultimately, if you’re not generating your own work or learning to produce your own answers, it’s probably cheating.

5 Tips for Finding the Best Homework Help App for You

If you’re serious about using a homework help app, our expert tips can help you pick one that’s right for you and your budget!

#1: Decide What Tools You Need to Succeed

While most apps offer Q&A services, the best apps provide study tools to help you learn the material you need to learn .

For instance, if you’re a visual learner, you might need an app that provides lots of videos. If you learn best by reading, an app that provides lots of in-depth written resources might be better for you. Or, if you learn best by actually doing things, look for an app that provides practice tests and quizzes, along with explanations for correct and incorrect answers.

Before committing to an app, take a quick survey of the tools they offer users to make sure they meet your unique learning needs.

#2: Decide Which Subjects You Need to Study

Not all homework apps are created equal. One might provide tutoring in math and science, but no proofreading services to help you with writing. Another might be perfect for American History, but what you really need help with is your Spanish class. So, before you can decide which app is best for you, make sure to create a list of the subjects you need the most help in.

#3: Do Your Research

As we’ve said before, there are tons of homework apps in the app store to choose from, and the most important thing you can do is research what they offer students. Services, prices for those services, and subjects that the apps cover all vary, so it’s important that you look into your options. We’ve compiled our all-around favorite (and reliable) apps here, but it’s still a good idea to do your own research to find out what might meet your individual needs best.

#4: Learn Why People Like and Dislike the App

Maybe you’ve heard the phrase “buyer beware?” It means that the person buying something should check for quality before actually handing over their money. This applies to both free and paid homework apps, but especially those that actually cost money.

Before you download anything, be sure to read the user reviews . While all apps will have both positive and negative reviews, you want to look for one that has more positive than negative. And if you’re considering paying for a service, be sure that users think it’s worth the price overall!

#5: Budget Yourself

If you find a paid app that provides the learning tools you need, covers the subjects you need to study, and that has good reviews overall, set a budget to pay for it before you hit that “install” button. The costs for paid homework apps vary, and especially if you’re using one that requires you to pay for individual questions or services, the prices can add up quickly. So make sure there’s money for it in your budget before you commit!

Whether students need extra help with their math homework or a boost in reading comprehension, one-on-one tutoring is a time-honored way to help kids succeed in school.

While parents can find great options within their local school districts, the one-on-one online tutoring services in this guide provide K-12 tutors across all states and subjects. We also avoided traditional in-person franchises in favor of services with an online focus.

Insider Reviews spoke with Teresa Lubovich, spokesperson for the National Tutoring Association and owner of Poulsbo Tutoring in Washington, and Mel Jackman, a managing director of the East Harlem Tutorial Program , to gather selection criteria for the best online tutoring services (read more about our criteria at the end of this guide). Neither expert is affiliated with any of our picks.

We also reached out to K-12 online tutoring programs across the country to see if they fit our criteria and considered whether they stand out in any one category. Here are our top five picks, as well as some wonderful programs that didn't necessarily fit into a category.

Best online tutoring service overall: ArborBridge, from $145 ArborBridge matches highly trained K-12 academic tutors with students to facilitate learning across all subjects.

Best online tutoring service for BIPOC children: INC Education, from $65 INC is an award-winning tutoring program that gives BIPOC students agency in their personalized learning experience.

Best affordable online tutoring service: Varsity Tutors, from $269 Varsity Tutors is a vast, popular program featuring over 3,000 subjects, from basics to Mandarin to computer science.

Best online tutoring service for special education: Special Education Resource, from $275 Special Education Resource is deeply committed to serving students with a wide range of disabilities from nonverbal autism to ADHD.

Best online tutoring service for reluctant learners: Central Park Tutors, from $110 Central Park Tutors offers highly specialized services for kids who have a wide range of learning styles and needs.

affordable homework help

ArborBridge matches highly trained K-12 academic tutors with students to facilitate learning across all subjects.

Pros : Distinguished tutors, highly personalized interactive experience, covers many subjects

Cons : Expensive, website can be difficult to navigate

Cost: $160 an hour

ArborBridge has offered national online tutoring for 10 years and is widely known for its test-prep services and top-of-the-line academic tutoring in every K-12 subject. Its instructors are specially trained to engage students through video chat platforms.

Forging deep connections over video chat is a critical skill, according to Lubovich. "The students need to feel connected to the tutor as if they were in person," she said. "How the tutor does that through the screen to reach in and draw them out, that's a skill — and it's really important."

Tutors at ArborBridge have a full online toolbox to draw from — from whiteboards to shared screens to interactive capabilities — and are constantly adjusting the tools and techniques they use to meet the unique needs of each student.

Every ArborBridge tutor graduated from a top-rated liberal arts or research university and has significant teaching experience. Beyond these requirements, tutors go through a rigorous interview process to evaluate their competence.

It also features a comprehensive student-tutor matching program for elementary, middle, and high school students.

affordable homework help

INC is an award-winning tutoring program that gives BIPOC students agency in their personalized learning experience.

Pros: Racially inclusive, affordable, stringent process for student/tutor match

Cons: Some subjects are not available

Cost: The average cost is $65 an hour, but each family receives a unique price package depending on their needs.

INC Education is the largest online tutoring program for BIPOC students. Since 2013, Dallas-based INC Education, which stands for "It's Not Complicated," has expanded its program from a one-man show — founder Jay Veal — to 100 tutors in many subjects (including dance!) and 10,000 students across the United States.

Veal started as a math teacher who was frustrated by the lack of diversity in the educational field. According to studies , students have more academic success when they are taught by same-race and same-gendered teachers, yet most school teachers are white women .

"The role model effect is real," said Jackman. "There's so much evidence that having one teacher of the same race is enough to give the student ambition and drive. You don't know what you can be if you don't see it."

The national program features a staff of more than 90 BIPOC tutors, many with master's degrees. Veal, who delivered a TED Talk, has won several awards for the program, including the 2019 United Nations Global Leadership Award Honoree for SDG 4 Goal of Quality Education.

Before beginning instruction, INC assesses every student and treats them like "little brothers and sisters," according to Veal. The service also incorporates each student's parents into the process and, if needed, their school teachers. Students can choose the ethnicity and gender of their tutor, and every program is individually tailored.

affordable homework help

Varsity Tutors is a vast, popular program featuring over 3,000 subjects, from basics to Mandarin to computer science.

Pros : Affordable, vast options, has a placement algorithm

Cons : Commission rates for tutors vary widely

Cost: $269/year or $299 for 6 months

Varsity Tutors has over 40,000 tutors across the country and is a popular choice for parents seeking quality tutoring at an affordable price.

The service started in 2007 and has been mostly online for five years. Despite being one of the larger online tutoring programs, Varsity rigorously vets its applicants through simulations, background checks, and interviews, and has turned down tutors with perfect SAT scores if they can't convey information in a comprehensible way.

"One of the biggest things I tell my parents is to look for someone who makes a good connection with your student," said Lubovich. "Because it doesn't matter if they know the math. If they don't connect, they don't do well."

Varsity Tutors uses a placement algorithm to match students with tutors based on things like schedule, educational needs, proficiency, learning style, interests, and goals.

Special Education Resource is deeply committed to serving students with a wide range of disabilities from nonverbal autism to ADHD.

Pros: Personalized attention, comprehensive approach, neurodiversity welcome, singular focus

Cons: Can be expensive

Cost: The average cost for a tailored program is $275 per month, but rates can vary widely from $35 to $2,000 per month.

Special Education Resource provides comprehensive online tutoring for kids with IEPs (individualized education plans). It is deeply committed to that goal, from assessment to evaluation — while many other tutoring services provide qualified special education academic tutoring, Special Education Resource has always been singularly focused on it.

Uniquely, the tutors are all part of the staff and are not independent contractors. This is a deliberate rule meant to create a family, according to co-founder Luke Dalien. All instructors have a four-year degree in special education as well as classroom experience.

"Not everyone is equipped for special education instruction," Lubovich said. "If a family has an IEP, they need to look for people who have been specifically trained."

Special Education Resource creates a very individually tailored experience for each child. In fact, Dalien said he personally meets with every parent individually, multiple times.

Students undergo a thorough assessment to be matched with the right instructor and also receive a specialized learning plan. Because of this, the rates vary widely depending on the needs of the student.

affordable homework help

Central Park Tutors offers highly specialized services for kids who have a wide range of learning styles and needs.

Pros: Run by teachers, values neurodiversity

Cons : Does not offer every subject

Cost: $110 an hour

Central Park Tutors offers K-12 homework help and academic coaching in many basic subjects like physics and history. While it serves all children, the service also offers specific methods like the Orton-Gillingham and Wilson multisensory reading systems designed for kids with dyslexia.

Many tutoring programs were launched by entrepreneurs, but Central Park Tutors was founded in 2005 by two teachers and scholars: husband and wife Mike Wallach and Susana Kraglievich. The service now has about 90 tutors on its roster, each with a master's degree or higher.

The program's tutors thrive on making information fun and digestible for students who have lost interest in school, or who may have depression or learning disabilities. They abide by the principles of education authors like Alfie Kohn and John Holt, who value unconditional support and respect for students.

"You want a program that will humanize the learning experience and recognize the magnificence of the children's brains and how powerful they are," said Jackman.

Central Park Tutors' intake system is very thorough, with each student receiving a custom plan and well-matched tutor. Despite its name, the service has worked with students from New York to Shanghai. However, most of the tutors are trained and based in New York.

affordable homework help

We looked at many options while choosing the best online tutoring services. Over time, we refined our criteria and had to leave off certain programs, including the following:

  • BrainStorm Tutoring & Arts : BrainStorm is an award-winning tutoring program that uses a hands-on approach. It didn't make it to the top because it is primarily based in New York, New Jersey, and Branson, Missouri, and has only just started to gain national traction. BrainStorm is a great option for kids who need help with basic subjects, as well as ancillary skills like time management, intellectual stamina, and self-confidence.
  • K12.com , Skooli.com , Tutor.com , and Wyzant : We did not include these four popular programs because they ask parents to independently choose tutors from a list of profiles. This format may be preferable for some families, but we only selected programs that utilize a deliberate matchmaking system. These services may be good options for parents and students who want complete control over the tutor selection process.

affordable homework help

Not all online tutoring services are created equal, and not all of them will suit your child's specific needs. There is an almost infinite number of programs online, and there is no one set of guidelines. Parents do have plenty of criteria to work with, though. Here's how we evaluated the tutoring programs featured in this guide:

Are the tutors qualified?

It's important to look for qualified tutors who generally have a degree in their field and a background in education. Tutors might opt for certification under the National Tutoring Association or the Association for the Tutoring and Coaching Profession , but there are no laws that regulate tutors or require these certifications.

Does the program offer shorter tutoring sessions?

Lubovich said that two-hour sessions are rare — as they should be — because they're pushing the absolute limit. Sessions should also include some breaks for physical movement, especially when it comes to young children.

Is there a contract?

Companies should give parents a contract complete with expectations, and they should comply with all children's online privacy laws .

Is the approach holistic and transparent?

A good tutoring program looks at the whole student rather than simply their grades or test scores. Look for services that assess children in advance and deliberately match them with tutors based on expertise and personality.

Tutoring should also take into account everything that is going on in a kid's life, such as trauma at home, not just scores. Frequent, transparent check-ins between tutors and parents are essential.

"You should be able to ask questions," Jackman said. "What is the staff like, is the learning process transparent, can I come take a peek or see a recorded video? Parents should feel empowered."

The holistic approach is particularly crucial for marginalized students. At a baseline, children with disabilities should be matched with specialized, qualified tutors. However, Jackman argued that tutoring companies should go beyond that by embracing diversity in every form, whether that means having a diverse staff, requiring anti-bias training among tutors, or offering discounts or equipment to lower-income students.

"It's not just about giving kids information, but celebrating who they are," Jackman said.

16 Best Online Tutoring Services — Reviewed & Ranked by an Ivy-League Expert

Research conducted by  Emily Kierkegaard , PhD,   and expert-reviewed by Kevin Wong, PrepMaven   Co-founder

Online tutoring has existed for decades, but it has expanded rapidly since 2020 with the huge boom in online learning overall.

With online learning, students can work with the very best tutors in the nation , wherever they may be.

That said, not all online tutoring is equally effective . Some companies have taken advantage of the situation to rake in the profits with lackluster tutoring by untrained instructors.

Our Ivy-League educators have scoured the country and investigated the many online tutoring services that exist in 2024.

We’ve carefully evaluated and ranked each tutoring service based on instructor background and training, pricing, and other features.

Best Online Tutoring in 2024

#1 – prepmaven.

Our Verdict — Best Online Tutoring Overall Price: $79–349/hour PrepMaven offers high-quality one-on-one tutoring at an incredibly reasonable price, given the impressive qualifications of its instructors. Nearly all of PrepMaven’s tutors are Ivy-League grads (with a few tutors from other top-30 universities), and many have prestigious masters or doctoral degrees. Tutors are also carefully vetted and evaluated on their ability to communicate and connect with students. PrepMaven’s individualized touch means that students are paired with tutors who match their personality traits and often share interests, allowing for a stronger level of connection that studies have shown leads to better learning outcomes. PrepMaven’s experienced tutors can customize learning sessions to meet the needs of each individual student. Depending on the student’s goals, tutors can help students work through homework assignments, review material from class, or provide additional enrichment and challenge material. PrepMaven’s attentive tutors can find any gaps in a student’s knowledge and fill in those gaps to lay strong educational foundations. PrepMaven’s elite tutors are also top-1% scorers on key college admissions tests like the SAT and ACT and can help students prepare for those exams. Students aiming at a private high school can also prepare for the SSAT or ISEE with their tutor. PrepMaven’s tutors have a higher level of education than other tutors at most competitors, and can easily help students with advanced subjects like AP US History, AP Calculus, AP Macroeconomics, AP Physics, and other challenging classes. Founded by brothers and Princeton grads Greg and Kevin, PrepMaven focuses on delivering consistently high-quality tutoring to students. All tutors undergo a thorough training program and can use proprietary teaching materials to help students reach their goals. To make high-quality tutoring accessible to more families, PrepMaven offers tutoring at several different price points. At the most affordable rate, students can work with current Ivy-League undergraduates with subject-area expertise. At higher rates, students can work with experienced coaches who hold advanced graduate degrees.

Sign up for PrepMaven’s Ivy-League tutoring now

PrepMaven’s one-on-one tutoring is the best option for any student wanting high-quality tutoring.

At a glance:

  • Cost: $79–349/hour, depending on tutor qualifications; minimum $450 package
  • Tutor qualifications: Ivy-League tutors, all experienced and highly trained, some with master’s or doctoral degrees

What we like:

  • Ivy League experience — most of their tutors are Princeton grads or current students, with some from Harvard and other Ivies
  • Different pricing options to meet different families’ circumstances
  • Smaller, boutique company offers more individualized approach customized for each student
  • Able to cover advanced subjects , since tutors have Ivy-League backgrounds and have aced AP tests themselves

What we don’t like:

  • Because they take the time to pair each student with the tutor that will be the best fit, sessions are not instantaneous and usually it takes 1–3 days to schedule with an Ivy-League tutor

Princeton University

#2 – StudyPoint

Our Verdict — Best Big Tutoring Company Price: $60-120/hour StudyPoint is a large test-prep company that keeps its rates lower than Princeton Review or Kaplan. While they do require basic qualifications for their tutors (2 years of experience and a college degree), it’s hard to know much about the tutor you’ll be matched with. You’ll also need to pay more for a more experienced tutor, so StudyPoint’s top rate of $120/hr runs on the more expensive side. While we like StudyPoint’s platform and their tutor qualifications, there’s likely to be a wide variance in tutro quality, since not all their tutors are from top schools. We’d suggest that families consider working with a Standard Tutor at PrepMaven , where fees start at $79/hour for Ivy-League tutors.

  • StudyPoint is a good option for families who want to work with a large, established company at decent rates.
  • Cost: $60-120/hr
  • Tutor qualifications: 2 years of tutoring experience and a Bachelor’s degree
  • Higher educational experience — their tutors have some experience and a college degree
  • Responsive – from our experience, it’s easy to get in touch with someone at StudyPoint
  • Tutors aren’t necessarily from top schools , and it’s not possible to see any information about their tutors
  • Rates may be high for standard academic tutoring

#3 – Skooli

Our Verdict — Best Super-Quick Tutoring Price: $39–49/hour Skooli is a newer online tutoring platform and the only one we’ve found that offers tutoring charged by the minute. Families can purchase packs for 8, 16, or 32 hours, or purchase individual hours. Students can then use these hours in as little as 15-minute increments. This might be handy for students who want to ask a tutor quick questions, and who don’t care about developing a relationship with a consistent tutor. Tutors for Skooli have college degrees, but haven’t necessarily graduated from a top-tier school. It’s not possible to see more details about individual tutors until after giving credit card details. Their online interface is slick and modern, although according to our inside sources it crashes frequently.

  • Students who want to work with a tutor to answer quick questions (sessions as short as 15 minutes).
  • Cost: $1248 for 32 hours ($39/hr), $672 for 16 hours ($42/hr), $352 per 8 hours ($44/hr), or $49/hour for individual hours, billed by the minute ($0.82/minute, minimum 15 minutes)
  • Tutor qualifications: college graduates
  • Tutoring available in very short increments , with a minimum session length of just 15 minutes
  • Instant tutoring — on-demand tutoring is available 24/7, and just enter your credit card information to start immediately
  • Reasonable pricing
  • Students can’t work with the same tutor consistently , which is less effective for learning
  • Online tutoring platform has some technological problems and crashes frequently

#4 – Wyzant

Our Verdict — Alternative for Families on a Budget Price: $20–600/hour There are plenty of large platforms with large stables of part-time tutors and coaches available to work with students. Wyzant is one of the largest such platforms, with more than 65,000 tutors providing services through their website. Students and families can pick individual tutors to work with from their roster and arrange tutoring services directly. One benefit of this model is that tutors can set their own rates, which vary hugely. Families on a budget can find online writing tutors as low as $20 per hour. However, these tutors might not have any teaching experience or training, and they may not have graduated from a top school. Some tutors on Wyzant with more qualifications may have much higher rates — as high as $600 per hour!

  • Families on a budget who are willing to work with a freelance tutor directly.
  • Cost: $20–600/hour
  • Tutor qualifications: varies
  • Marketplace platform means that some tutors list low rates for tutoring, which can make tutoring more affordable
  • Families can choose their own tutor directly out of over 65,900 tutors listed
  • No training for tutors — which leads to uneven quality of instruction
  • Families are hiring individual tutors, which means tutor qualifications vary enormously , and there are no guarantees
  • Choosing the right tutor out of 65,000+ is one more task for busy families

#6 – Learn to Be

Our Verdict — Best Free Tutoring (for qualifying families) Price: free (or voluntary contribution of $9–30 per month) Learn to Be is a fantastic non-profit organization improving education for underserved youth in the US. Students work with the same tutor consistently, which allows them to build a strong relationship and allows for mentoring as well as learning. Students working with Learn to Be have seen an average increase in test scores of 15.8% and an average GPA increase of 1.6 — nearly two full letter grades (for example from a C to an A-)! Tutors are volunteers who are passionate about educational equity, and range from current high school and college students to professionals or retirees. The program works primarily with foster youth, homeless youth, and other lower-income families. Possible qualifications for free tutoring with Learn to Be include: student attends a Title 1 school, receives free or reduced lunch at school, comes from a single-parent home, is a foster child, is homeless, or qualifies for food stamps. It’s possible to work with a Spanish-speaking tutor through Learn to Be.

  • Students who qualify for free tutoring (foster youth or low-income families).
  • Non-profit helping underserved youth
  • Completely free tutoring for qualifying families
  • Students work with the same tutor consistently, which builds trust and leads to a better individualized educational experience
  • Tutor qualifications vary — some tutors are high school students as young as 14 years old, and all tutors are volunteers
  • Only for qualifying youth in the US (low income or foster youth)

#7 – Schoolhouse

Our Verdict — Best Free Peer Math Tutoring Price: free While Learn to Be provides free or low-cost tutoring to only qualifying families, Schoolhouse is free and available to any student age 13+. Created by Sal Khan, who is also the founder of well-known educational non-profit Khan Academy , Schoolhouse is an innovative platform for peer tutoring. Students who are strong in math can take a short test to check their knowledge. Qualified students can then volunteer to host small-group tutoring sessions online to help their peers who might be struggling. Schoolhouse’s peer tutoring is designed to reinforce and practice what students are learning in school. There’s no adult or experienced instructor leading the tutoring sessions, and all sessions are in groups open to any student worldwide to join, so we wouldn’t recommend it for students who need targeted help learning specific math concepts. However, it can be a fun way for students to practice math alongside their peers.

  • Students age 13+ who want to practice math problems in a group with their peers.
  • Tutor qualifications: current students age 13+ — students take a quiz to prove their knowledge but no other required qualifications
  • Completely free and open to any student worldwide age 13+
  • Students can work with their student peers , which some might find more approachable
  • Tutors are other young students and have no experience or qualifications
  • Small-group setting doesn’t provide individual attention to students
  • Not a substitute for learning guided by an experienced instructor
  • Only math , and not other subjects

Our Verdict — Disappointing Quality from Test-Prep Giant Price : lower-quality instant tutoring at $29–35/hour, minimum package $350; monthly subscription instant tutoring at $36–40/hour Back in 2014, Tutor.com acquired the well-known test-prep company The Princeton Review. (Note that the Princeton Review has no connection to Princeton University.) They now offer subject-area tutoring in over 80 different academic areas, including math. The range of tutoring options is a little confusing, but it basically breaks down to two different models: families can choose one-off tutoring packages of 10–50 “instant tutoring” hours that can be used over a six-month period, or a monthly subscription for 1–5 instant tutoring hours each month. Tutors are available 24/7 for instant sessions. Unfortunately, we were disappointed with the quality of this offering from The Princeton Review. In contrast to their operations for standardized test prep (like SAT and ACT prep ), their platform for subject-area tutoring does not provide instructors with training, so there’s very little consistency. Tutors are also capped at 2 or 3 sessions per day, so they’re by design part-time instructors who are teaching a little on the side. While The Princeton Review / Tutor.com claims to count Ivy grads and experts with advanced degrees among their tutors, we found this to be misleading. Most of their tutors have only a BA, and most have graduated from local schools that are not even in the top 200 universities. Pay for tutors is minimum wage, so it’s difficult for them to attract good teaching talent. Surprisingly for The Princeton Review, their subject-area tutoring is a tutoring marketplace platform (similar to Wyzant ). Families select individual tutors to work with based on their bios and arrange the tutoring sessions individually. For us, this obviates the point of working with a large company like Princeton Review, where in theory the advantage is quality control and a standard curriculum, even if it comes with a more corporate feel. With this marketplace model, tutor quality and qualifications vary considerably, especially given that tutors do not receive any training or teaching materials.

  • Cost: Homework Help packages that can be used over a period of 6 months: $350 for 10 hours ($35/hr), $950 for 30 hours ($32/hr), or $1499.99 for 50 hours ($29/hr); Homework Help tutoring subscriptions: $40 for 1 hour each month, $115 for 3 hours each month ($38/hr), or $180 for 5 hours each month ($36/hr)
  • Reasonable pricing for tutoring and a range of payment models
  • Tutors are available 24/7 for instant Homework Help packages
  • Tutor qualifications vary — most are from local or state schools, not competitive colleges
  • Online platform is buggy and crashes frequently
  • Challenging for them to attract good teaching talent as pay is minimum wage
  • Low quality of teaching , surprising for a big-name player in test prep

#8 – ArborBridge

Our Verdict: Pricey Service with Mystery Tutors Price: $165+/hour, minimum package $2400 for 15 hours Featuring crisp, minimalist visuals and a younger team, ArborBridge calls itself “the next generation of test prep.” They’ve always been remote and online, so they haven’t suffered the growing pains with the shift to online learning that many competitors with outdated platforms (like Pearson and Princeton Review ) have experienced. That said, their tutoring is quite expensive! Their rate is always at least $160 per hour, and the minimum package is a hefty $2400 for 15 hours of tutoring. They also advertise a “concierge” tutoring service with a more customized experience — price upon request. Is it worth the price? We’re not so sure. ArborBridge claims to have hired the “best” tutors but they do not list any specific qualifications for their tutors or provide any bios for their tutor roster. On their (slightly-defunct) Instagram page they have provided some fun facts about a few of their tutors, but they don’t list any educational background, years of experience, or relevant professional credentials, just favorite foods and television shows. There’s no indication that their tutors have graduated from top colleges, have teaching experience, or any other relevant qualifications — unlike services like PrepMaven or Tutoring Service of New York that only hire Ivy-League tutors. In fact, our sources have mentioned that their tutors don’t receive much training prior to teaching. They also, unlike the Princeton Review, don’t offer any guarantees for raising grades or scores. In the end, we’re not sure why ArborBridge has such high prices without offering particularly high-quality tutoring in return. Their website looks nice, though!

  • Cost: $160/hour, minimum package is $2400 for 15 hours (+ 1 bonus hour); $4800 for 30 hours (+ 3 bonus hours); $7200 for 45 hours (+ 6 bonus hours) — or “concierge tutoring” with “highest level of hands-on care,” price upon request
  • Tutor qualifications: unknown
  • Known for good customer service
  • Younger, more modern tutoring service that’s built with technology from the get-go
  • Expensive , with a minimum cost of $2400 for 15 hours of tutoring
  • No information about tutor qualifications provided
  • No guarantees for grade or score raises
  • Seems more design than substance

#9 – Learner

Our Verdict — Tutoring that Includes ESL Learners Price: $55–80/hour, minimum $400 package Learner is another newer online tutoring platform. Unlike many of the other services on this list, Learner also provides tutoring services to adults, especially for non-native English speakers. While they advertise that their tutors have degrees from “top universities,” it seems that the only necessary qualification for tutors at Learner is a college degree (not just from top schools). We found their sign-up sequence to be frustrating. New clients start by answering a series of questions about their students. While it repeatedly seems like they’ll show a selection of tutors that may be a match, this is a bait-and-switch tactic, and they never display any actual tutor profiles. Instead, new clients must first make a payment before they can view any tutor details. Learner has a “satisfaction guarantee,” which simply means that they’ll allow families to request a switch to another tutor if it’s not a good fit. Their rates are on the pricier side for “average” tutors who do not have teaching experience or degrees from elite universities.

  • Cost: $400 for 5 hours ($80/hour), $700 for 10 hours ($70/hour), $1200 for 20 hours ($60/hour), or $1650 for 30 hours ($55/hour)
  • Explicitly offers tutoring for ESL learners
  • No specific tutor qualifications beyond a college degree
  • Prices are high given quality of service

#10 – Revolution Prep

Our Verdict — High Rates Price: $132/hour, minimum $1578 for 12 hours Revolution Prep is a larger platform providing online tutoring with a focus on interactive learning. Revolution Prep is a larger platform providing online tutoring with a focus on interactive learning. While they used to offer more affordable small-group classes, they no longer do so for math tutoring.. Their individual tutoring rate of $132/hour is quite high, especially given the backgrounds of their instructors. While we like that all of their tutors are full-time staff, versus tutoring part-time alongside another career, their tutors do not have any other specific qualifications. These rates are comparable or higher than other services that provide more customized learning with Ivy-League tutors, like PrepMaven or select tutors on Wyzant..

  • Cost: individual tutoring $132/hour, minimum $1578 for 12 hours
  • Tutor qualifications: none specified
  • All tutors are full-time staff
  • Small-group tutoring provides lower prices
  • No specific qualifications for tutors
  • Tutoring rates are high for the type of service

#11 – Tutoring Service of New York

Our Verdict — New Service with Higher Minimum Package Price: $112–160/hour ($1200 5-session minimum) Founded by a former tutor with the now-defunct Ivy Global tutoring service, the new Tutoring Service of New York offers subject-area tutoring online. Most of their tutors are current graduate students, many at Columbia University and NYU. The higher prices of the Tutoring Service of New York reflect the more elite educational background of the tutors. However, their minimum of $1200 for at least 5 sessions is high, especially since many other services have smaller minimum packages (compare $510 minimum at PrepMaven or $450 minimum at The Princeton Review ), or else allow families to purchase one-off tutoring sessions ( Pearson , Skooli , and others).

  • Cost: $1200 for five 90-minute sessions; $2000 for 10 sessions; $2700 for 16 sessions
  • Tutor qualifications:  college graduates, mostly current graduate students at Columbia or NYU
  • Qualified tutors with mostly Ivy-League backgrounds
  • New service , so client reviews are still limited
  • Higher minimum tutoring packages

#12 – Mathnasium

Our Verdict — Tutoring Franchise to Help with Math Homework Price: varies (franchise), typically $200–425/month Math is one of the most important core subjects, and so it’s not surprising that there are learning programs devoted specifically to math. Mathnasium is a franchise with locations throughout the US and even internationally. As their name might suggest, they’re focused on fostering math skills only. Pricing varies by franchise location and by grade level, but most Mathnasium centers offer a flat monthly fee that allows students to attend math tutoring sessions regularly (whether online or in person), usually two or three times per week. While other programs might focus on drills and exercises, Mathnasium typically focuses on helping students with their math homework and other math assignments. Mathnasium does not assign homework or create customized curricula for students. One significant downside of Mathnasium’s approach is that students do not necessarily get to work with the same tutor each time. This disrupts continuity and makes it harder for students to learn, since a good tutor will track students’ progress over time and create assignments that target the needs of each individual student. There are also no specific qualifications for math tutors, so there’s no guarantee that the tutors are great teachers or have a high level of expertise in math. Since each of the Mathnasium centers is locally owned and operated, the customer service experience can vary significantly.

  • Cost: varies (franchise), typically $200–425/month (costs are higher for high school levels)
  • Math tutor qualifications: none specified
  • Focus on math , and can help students understand their math homework and other school assignments
  • Tutoring isn’t necessarily one-on-one
  • Not the same tutor every time , which is not ideal for learning
  • Covers only math , while some other tutoring services can provide tutoring for other subjects as well
  • Tutors do not have any specific qualifications

#13 – Kumon

Our Verdict — Tutoring Franchise Drilling Math and Reading Basics Price: varies (franchise), typically $100–200/month Kumon is an international tutoring franchise that focuses on reaching math and reading through rote memorization. Founded by Toru Kumon in Japan in 1958, Kumon centers all follow the same learning approach based on worksheets that very gradually increase in difficulty. Students enrolled in Kumon’s program begin with a diagnostic assessment for math and reading comprehension skills. They are then usually placed in a level lower than where they scored , so that they can reinforce existing skills with additional practice. However, this also means that students have to spend time on material that they have already learned. Students at Kumon are not able to bring in homework or material from their current classes for additional help. Instead, all Kumon sessions focus on the rigid Kumon material. The goal of the Kumon Method  is “to teach students to learn independently,” and so instructors observe students as they complete worksheets and provide guidance. Students are also assigned homework from Kumon, in order to continue practicing at home. Students typically receive about 30 minutes of homework per day. Since each of the Kumon centers is locally owned and operated, the customer service experience can vary significantly. Pricing also varies by location, but runs typically about $100–200 per month. Students are encouraged to attend Kumon sessions twice per week.

  • Cost: varies (franchise), typically $100–200/month (costs are higher for high school levels)
  • Tutor qualifications: high school graduates
  • Repetition of core skills can lead to a thorough understanding of the basics
  • Rigid curriculum is not personalized for the learning styles and speeds of each student
  • Rote repetition and endless worksheets may be boring or frustrating for students
  • Students can’t bring in outside homework for help with their current classes
  • Assigns a lot of extra work for students (typically 30 minutes of homework daily)

#14 – Varsity Tutors

Our Verdict — Uneven Quality Without Budget Pricing Price: $70-100/hour Varsity Tutors is an enormous tutoring platform offering online instruction in all academic subjects and test prep, including writing. These days their marketing has been ubiquitous! However, Varsity Tutors’ size has many downsides — most notably, very uneven quality of teaching. Tutors at Varsity need only a high school degree, and there is no requirement for tutors to have a college degree or teaching experience, let alone a top-tier educational background or professional writing credentials. Tutors can join the Varsity team very quickly and are paid lower rates than nearly any other tutoring company (just $12–15 for sessions that cost families up to $95), so it’s difficult for Varsity to attract and retain good talent. Lucky families might get assigned a good tutor, but that’s not at all assured. Varsity Tutors also does not provide any tutor materials, curriculum, or training, so it’s up to individual tutors to create everything from scratch, contributing further to the unevenness of quality. With rates higher than the competition with similar types of tutors (no specific qualifications beyond a college degree), Varsity is significantly overpriced. We’d recommend that families either consider a more budget-friendly option that would offer the same quality as Varsity in the $30–40/hour price range, or else consider a service like PrepMaven (starting at $79/hour) or Tutoring Service of New York (starting at $112/hour) that pairs students with highly-qualified tutors with advanced degrees and Ivy-League backgrounds.

  • Cost: $ 70-100/hour
  • Large number of tutors , so certain to find a tutor to fit your schedule
  • No education or training requirements for tutors , along with low pay rates for instructors, means tutors are less-qualified than alternative tutoring services
  • Uneven teaching quality due to lack of resources for instruction
  • Overpriced given the lack of required qualifications for tutors

#15 – Preply

Our Verdict — Lower-Cost Tutoring Marketplace Platform Price: $5–40/hour Preply is a lower-cost marketplace platform. It’s significantly smaller than Wyzant . Among those tutors listed, most don’t have high educational backgrounds. Preply is a more international platform, and some of the tutors are from other countries or located outside the US. One benefit of Preply’s platform is that rates are very low, ranging from $5/hour to $40/hour. These rates are actually comparable or higher than the pay rates for most of the larger platforms on our list (like Pearson , The Princeton Review , Varsity Tutors , and TutaPoint ), so don’t necessarily take these numbers on their own as indications of lower quality — just that tutors are earning a larger share. That said, the tutoring available through Preply does appear to be lower-quality than other options.

  • Cost: $5–40/hour, depending on rates set by individual tutors
  • Tutor qualifications:  varies
  • F amilies can choose individual tutors on their marketplace platform
  • No specific qualifications for tutors and no quality control
  • Task of choosing the right tutor can be stressful

#16 – Chegg

Our Verdict — Message Board Help with Math Questions and Essays Price: $20 per month Chegg is one of the biggest tutoring platforms, so families may be familiar with their name already. We should note that they’ve pivoted several times in the past few years, so their service may have changed from what families have read. Whereas previously (first as InstaEDU, then as Chegg Tutors) Chegg offered live tutoring instruction online, Chegg no longer offers one-on-one tutoring . Instead, they now offer two subscription levels that allow students to view instructional videos, access answer keys for common textbooks, and receive asynchronous written feedback to homework questions. These questions are primarily answered by “subject matter experts” located in India. Their “Chegg Study Pack” includes the option to submit papers for limited written feedback with a 48-hour turnaround time. Students can submit up to 15 short papers per month, up to 3000 words each (about 6 pages double-spaced). That said, this is not the same as active writing tutoring with live discussion and exercises directly with a tutor. The written feedback provided by Chegg’s essay review service is limited. Moreover, the essay reviews are done by different tutors every time, so there’s no opportunity to grow through working with one tutor consistently. This service might work for students who want merely a quick check of their grammar or other small details on school assignments and don’t care about long-term improvements as a writer. Read more about the best online writing tutoring services here . With their Chegg Study Pack subscription, students can also post up to 20 math questions per month and receive a written step-by-step solution to the problem within 24 hours. This is not the same as active tutoring with live discussion and exercises directly with a tutor. The written math help provided by Chegg’s essay review service is very limited. Moreover, the math problem answers are written by different tutors every time, so there’s no opportunity to grow through working with one tutor consistently. Honestly, this service is little better than posting a math question to a helpful community forum, and it’s hard to see how it’s worth the monthly subscription fee.

  • Cost: $15 per month for Chegg Study subscription, which provides homework resources only; $20 per month for Chegg Study Pack subscription which provides essay reviews (up to 15 short papers per month, up to 3000 words each) and math question help in addition to the homework resources
  • Students can get help with specific math questions within a 24-hour turnaround time
  • Large number of written essay reviews per month , up to 15 short essays
  • Limited to 20 math questions per month
  • Asynchronous, written feedback is not an effective way to learn
  • No education or training requirements for tutors , and no information about who the essay or math question reviewers are

What can students learn with online tutoring?

Students can find online tutoring for any subject, from fundamentals in reading, writing , and math to advanced high school APs or college-level subjects.

Of course, many tutoring services offer SAT and ACT test prep or coaching through the college essay writing process .

Online tutoring has also allowed students to connect with tutors for more niche subjects like creative writing , Italian language, statistical analysis, coding, gender studies, molecular biology, the sociology of fan fiction… with the internet, it’s possible to find a specialized instructor for just about anything!

Some marketplace platforms like Wyzant or Preply allow families to search for and select individual tutors by subject-area expertise.

Other more boutique educational services like PrepMaven or the Tutoring Service of New York might be able to find and pair students with an elite Ivy-League tutor in that particular subject.

An experienced tutor can also create enrichment projects for students to supplement their school curriculum and provide positive challenges and growth opportunities that can allow students to distinguish themselves in prestigious competitions and on college applications .

As class sizes continue to increase each year, even well-meaning teachers are unable to provide individualized attention to their students, and more advanced or gifted students are often left feeling bored and unchallenged in their classes. A great tutor can meet a student at their level and help them reach new heights.

Building Skills for College Admissions Tests (PSAT, SAT, and ACT)

Many students are focused on college admissions, which can have a significant impact on their opportunities for the rest of their lives.

The SAT and ACT standardized tests remain an important part of college applications in the US. Even with some schools creating temporary test-optional admissions policies during the Covid-19 pandemic, high test scores are still the norm at top schools throughout the US, and (apart from at a small handful of test-blind schools) a good SAT or ACT score will always improve a student’s chances of admission.

And, according to US News , more and more elite schools are once again requiring submission of SAT or ACT scores as part of the application process. If you’re thinking about applying to schools like MIT or Dartmouth later on, you’ll need to have impressive SAT or ACT scores to stand a shot.

affordable homework help

Both the SAT and ACT measure “college readiness” and test students on their abilities in math, reading, and writing. The ACT also includes a section on science, which focuses on students’ abilities to evaluate experiments and interpret data.

SAT section range from 200 to 800. To give an idea of what kind of SAT scores students might need, the average SAT score at the Ivy League is between 1450 and 1570 , and the average SAT score at the top 50 public universities is between 1320 and 1500 .

Meanwhile, ACT scores range from 2 to 36, and the average ACT score at the Ivy League is between 33 and 35 .

While a great SAT or ACT score alone won’t get you into the Ivy League or another top-tier university, it’s very hard to get into a top-tier school without strong scores on the SAT or ACT .

Furthermore, high test scores can win students big scholarships through programs like the National Merit competition .

With scholarships worth $300,000 on the line, there’s a lot of incentive for students to strengthen their core math, reading, and writing skills!

What makes a good online tutor?

A good tutor should be an amazing teacher with experience, a strong educational background, and the ability to plan customized exercises that target an individual student’s weak spots .

Look for experienced tutors with strong educational backgrounds (i.e. who attended top universities) who have specific training in teaching that subject .

Studies have shown that students will learn better when they can establish a relationship with their tutor . Look for a tutoring service where students can continue with the same tutor and build a sense of rapport.

A good tutor can help students to succeed on any homework and assignments they may have for school . They can teach students how to work through their homework and study for important tests.

Great tutors will track student progress and help students to build confidence and motivation. We’ve found that many of our students start to enjoy school much more after working with our elite tutors !

Best overall: The one-on-one tutoring from PrepMaven is the best out there both in terms of tutor quality and price. While PrepMaven’s tutors can certainly help with school assignments, they can also create targeted practice to fill any gaps in a student’s current knowledge. Starting at just $79/hour, students can work with current undergraduates at Princeton, Harvard, and other Ivy-League universities to improve their skills. Families can also work with experienced, professional educators and Ivy-League graduates at $149/hour. As a boutique tutoring service, PrepMaven offers careful attention to each student and boasts amazing customer reviews.

Best of the big companies: StudyPoint offers a solid balance of cost to tutor qualifications. We like their responsiveness and their flexibility. While we’re not huge fans of the fact that their tutors might not be subject-area experts and may not come from elite colleges, we’d recommend StudyPoint over other tutoring giants like Kaplan or Princeton Review.

Best super-quick tutoring: If students want short-term tutoring available instantly, they might consider Skooli . Skooli is the only tutoring service we reviewed that offers tutoring by the minute. Tutors aren’t necessarily from top schools, and students can’t work with the same tutor consistently, so the quality of tutoring is lower, but on-demand tutoring can start as soon as you enter your credit card details.

Alternative for families on a budget: For families on a tighter budget, we’d suggest looking for an independent tutor on Wyzant . It’s a tutoring marketplace platform, so the quality varies hugely and there’s no oversight or qualification requirements, but you might find a decent tutor under $40/hour. However, in our experience a good tutor can accomplish more with a student in one hour than an average tutor can do in five hours . With that in mind, it might be more effective to choose fewer hours of reliably high-quality tutoring.

5 places to find free or low-cost tutoring

Tutors don’t have to be expensive. Check out these resources for free or low-cost tutors.

affordable homework help

By Ben Samuel Shapiro

Expert reviewed by Trynia Kaufman, MS

Updated May 20, 2024

Some tutors charge $60 per hour or more. But you can find experienced tutors who charge much less. And with more tutoring options moving online, you can skip the huge fees without ever leaving home.

Here are five free or low-cost tutoring programs. Details about each may be helpful for students who learn and think differently.

Before you dive in, check with your child’s school to see if it offers free tutoring. Do you live near a college or university? Call their education or psychology department to see if they offer free tutoring for kids. Your child’s school and nearby colleges may also have lists of local groups or people who do free or low-cost tutoring.

1. Your local library

How it works: Many public libraries offer free homework help. They team up with sites like Tutor.com to give free one-on-one help from a live, online tutor. You’ll need your library card and an internet connection. Some libraries also offer free one-on-one tutoring in person.

Keep in mind: Some libraries don’t offer online tutoring. And some offer it, but it’s hard to find on their website. (It may be listed under “Services.”) Call your local library to ask for help.

2. Children’s Dyslexia Centers

How it works: Kids with dyslexia in grades 1–12 get free one-on-one tutoring twice a week. Tutors are trained in the science of reading. There are more than 40 Children’s Dyslexia Centers in 13 states. The centers are funded by the Scottish Rite, Northern Jurisdiction of Freemasonry.

Keep in mind: Kids must be formally tested for dyslexia before you contact these centers.

3. Learn to Be

How it works: This nonprofit offers free, one-on-one, online tutoring to underserved students. The tutors at Learn to Be are volunteers who are background checked. Students tend to have one or two tutoring sessions a week.

Keep in mind: Applicants may be accepted based on financial need. The application has questions about household income, and free or reduced-price lunch. You can also mention if your child has an IEP or a 504 plan.

4. Power Hour at the Boys and Girls Club of America

How it works: This afterschool program helps kids and teens with homework. In some locations, the Power Hour program includes one-on-one tutoring. Tutors and volunteers are trained to help students with ADHD, dyslexia, and other learning differences.

Cost: Free to Boys and Girls Club members. Membership fees may vary. Financial assistance is available.

Keep in mind: Not all clubs offer tutoring as part of the Power Hour program.

4. Club Z Tutoring

How it works: This one may cost more than the other groups on this list. But Club Z is one of the few tutoring sites advertising that it helps students with ADHD and learning differences. There are more than 400 locations, so chances are good you can sign up for in-home or online tutoring.

Cost: Not specified. Depends on the location.

Keep in mind: Some tutors have more experience than others in helping kids with ADHD and learning differences.

Ready to contact a tutoring program? Use this list of questions to ask to help you find the right tutor for your child.

Paraphrasing tool, conclusion generator

This WritingUniverse review was born after we got numerous requests to investigate it. Our team quickly did preliminary research, and we realized why students showed interest in it. WritingUniverse is mysterious in several ways at once: we have no idea when it was established and reviews on its website don’t have any dates mentioned. It’s very in tune with its logo of an alien with a UFO. The company offers writing-related services; it asks for adequate prices and works with the shortest deadlines. Even a 3-hour timeframe is accepted. Few reviews from customers we saw are mostly positive, but they aren’t informative enough to draw conclusions. So, we launched our own investigation.

This is not the first time we have reviewed WritingUniverse, double-checked how their services work, or whether they maintain their quality. When this service appeared a few years ago, it impressed us with its name, fun web design, accuracy, turn-around time. Still, it continues to be our number one homework help website, as almost nothing has changed since our last investigation. The first thing that comes to mind when you think of WritingUniverse is its large database of free essay and paper samples. There are more than 100K samples on various topics, subjects, academic levels. You’ll easily find what you need there and can use it for inspiration or as a writing manual. In case you search for individual assistance, just place an order and get matched with the most suitable homework helper.

There are experts in different subjects, even complicated ones like Aviation, IT, Accounting, Chemistry, but also qualified writers specializing in Literature, Women & gender studies, Psychology, Nursing, Art, etc. The best thing for students is that their rates per page are significantly lower and start at $10.99. Our review team placed an order again to test. The quality was impeccable — instructions followed, outline attached, 0% plagiarism with timely delivery on top. What is more, the site has created free writing tools —paraphrasing tool, conclusion generator — that anyone can access for unlimited use. These factors helped WritingUniverse remain on top of our best homework sites list.

ProEssayService is a company that specializes in the provision of academic services. It has been operating for a couple of years. It has low prices, good discounts, friendly operators, and a solid range of writing options. Placing an order is easy, and though there are some issues with its online presence and reviews, quality is great.

This company has a great homework solutions website with a great aim to help as many students as possible with their academic needs. They cooperate only with top-notch writers with high expertise in different subjects. The rates for their services are a bit higher than those of the previous company but still very affordable. The price for a page starts at $12.99 and goes higher depending on number of pages and urgency. They’re ready to help with any homework type — essays, research papers, dissertations, answer-question tasks, lab reports, etc. The company also offers lifetime discounts. The more orders you have, the bigger the discount percentage.

What is more, the site has free content too. There are free samples, writing guides, blog. They have detailed terms, a privacy policy, and a money-back guarantee described clearly. Our reviewers have placed an order and received it on time, but because of a few minor errors with formatting, they’ve requested a revision. It took more time than anticipated, so ProEssayServies stayed in 2nd place in our rating of the best websites for homework answers.

This company offers a plethora of popular writing services and those types of academic writing help that are not so common like resume writing and business report assistance. They have a good pricing scheme that instantly shows you the price. Additionally, you may request drafts, plagiarism reports, proofreading by an editor, and urgent writer’s selection. They offer excellent quality, a good collection of free essay samples, a good blog that will help many students learn about writing styles and find inspiration, and the majority of payment methods. They are a reliable service that is safe to consider for most tasks. Just remember that things may get a bit pricey, yet it is always paid off as our review experts have found out.

Here is one more online college homework help service for students who seek professional help. GrabMyEssay has been operating on the market for more than 8 years now. This allowed them to create a great team of professional helpers and tutors. You’ll find experts in Biology, Linguistics, Sociology, Healthcare, Philosophy, Theater studies, etc. Each order is paired with the top expert in the field that is available to work. $14.99 is starting price per page. This is not the cheapest rate, but the company has a first-time client discount, an active loyalty program, and an affiliate program. After you create an account on their platform, you’ll have access to your personal affiliate code or link. Share them with friends and earn credit to use towards your future orders.

The site copes well with urgent orders. Our review experts have requested an Archeology research proposal with a 3-hour deadline and got it before their deadline. Assigned writer was responsive, listened to advice, answered all questions, did thorough research. Customer support is always online, answering requests via chat. We enjoyed GrabMyEssay so much, but because of higher prices, we decided to give it a 3d place.

It is one of the best choices for essay and research writing work, according to our reviews. This company provides good grammar quality and follows all formatting and grading rubric rules. Timely delivery and free revisions work as advertised. Their selection of free samples seems to be curated by the company’s specialists since they are mostly good. What makes them even better is their customer support service, which is available immediately and provides custom help with order placement, payment procedure, and revisions. If you want to choose something that is affordable and customized to your needs, this service is the safest bet.

TopEssayWriting is very noticeable among homework answer websites because they put an emphasis on employees. They have developed a strict selection process for candidates. Only those who pass a background check, English test, and writing task can join the team for probation. During probation period, each writer has an assigned quality assurance manager who follows their work, achievements, following policies. If candidate sticks to client instructions, deadlines, company requirements — probation will be passed.

Price per page starts at $12.99 if your high school level order isn’t urgent. But if you need an urgent Master’s level paper, rate will be $18.55 or higher. But there are many discounts — for instance, useTopStart13discount code to get 13% off your first order. Our review team did not miss an opportunity to save some money. Our order came up nicely. We agreed on a B grade for it, which is pretty impressive compared to other services we tested.

TopEssayWriting also has free samples, a paraphrasing tool, and a conclusion generator. But they do not have any accounts on social media platforms. We think that these are a must nowadays.

CleverrUp is a relatively new company that provides many-layered homework services in a variety of spheres. It could solve your Math problems, write an essay, find an answer to a particularly complex question, give you a tutor, and so on. Its prices are affordable and its quality is of acceptable level. It follows deadlines properly, but there are next to no Cleverr Up reviews online because a firm hasn’t been working long.

We added this new site to our list as it showed better results than the previous one. It deserves to be among the best college homework help sites as it is designed specifically for homework help. On their site, you will find expert homework assistance, a sample base, expert Q&A. There is a subscription option for Q&A with three plans: free, basic, for $14.99/month, and premium for $25.99/month. That is very affordable. We liked this feature as previous sites still needed it. If you are interested in papers, prices per page begin at $15 with longest deadline. Our ordered task came with a delay that could have been better. So, we recommend ordering beforehand. Another thing that we did not like was the blog -— it is completely empty, has zero posts, and that is strange. There is room for improvement for CleverrUp.

  • Clear ordering process
  • Live support
  • Contact with the writer
  • Refund policy
  • Late delivery is possible
  • Empty blog page

Our review team devotes time and effort to investigating each service and suggests only the best of them to you. Read our reviews to find out pros and cons of each writing company.

Features of Best Websites That Do Your Homework

The best service providers should have features that will meet the needs of even the most demanding customer. The first important thing is website interface and content. It must be easy to navigate, have appealing colors, necessary explanations and information about the company and its services, prices, writing team, subjects covered, etc. There must be terms and conditions pages, privacy, refund, and cookie policy pages. All terms and guarantees must be described clearly, in detail, without vague information. It is good when best college homework helper websites create loyalty programs and discount offers for students. Prices should be affordable as students may be on a tight budget. Money-back guarantee and free revisions should also be present as a quality and no plagiarism guarantee. Among other things could be timely delivery, live customer support, direct communication with homework assistants, free tools and guides, or other features.

How to Benefit From Homework Websites

To avoid getting scammed by any homework site, learn about all perks and advantages you get. Ask customer support about possible discounts or loyalty programs you may enter. Sometimes there may be holiday discounts or promo codes — stalk company’s socials to learn about those. When placing an order, try to provide as much information about your homework as possible. Upload guidelines, grading rubrics, lecture notes, textbooks, etc. Usually, best sites to help with homework ask for such info but double-check what you share a few times. If you send incomplete info, writers will not be responsible for failing your homework. You can forget about free revision or a refund, too. Find some time to read policies before ordering help. If you know what services to expect, you won’t be disappointed.

6 Reasons To Trust Our Reviews

Should i trust all online reviews.

Unfortunately, not all service reviews you come across online are real. If you search for legit help with homework websites for students, read client feedback at review platforms like TrustPilot, SiteJabber, Quora, and Reddit. But even then, spare a minute and check the profile of the person who makes a post and their previous comments. If they praise different companies or the same one, something is suspicious. Do not trust completely positive posts or those posted long ago, as things may change. Also, be careful with the testimonials published on company’s website – those are definitely fake. No one will publish a negative review about themselves.

Get Help with College Homework From Reliable Sites

In case the date of a crucial exam is approaching, and there’s no time for random, minor homework tasks, choose recommended homework writing sites. Our team reviewed them, made an order, and ensured that they offered decent academic assistance for students. Check other reviews and ratings that we completed to learn about good companies. We are constantly in search of top essay services that appear online. Asking for help is natural. Just do it with the right people. Make smart choices with our reviews.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our team came to the conclusion that WritingUniverse and TopEssayWriting are the best at the moment. They have more affordable rates for students accompanied by high quality. We update our reviews often, so check with us from time to time, as we might find even better services!

Of course. All top 5 sites listed above accept urgent orders and can complete your paper in 3 hours. For example, try WritingUniverse if you have an urgent task. But keep in mind that longer assignments require more hours to complete, so better place your order beforehand.

You’ll find both legit and scam sites online. Our reviews are aimed at helping you differentiate between good and bad sites. Before getting in touch with any service, find a few minutes to read our investigations and comments from real customers.

It is legal and safe, as it’s the same as hiring a tutor and doing homework together. But be aware of the company you order from. We’ve mentioned before that not all sites should be trusted.

Actually, there are a few apps that’ll suit you. We have not reviewed those yet, but in accordance with college statistics, Yup Homework Help is a leading app among students. Other similar apps are iStudiez and MyHomework.

The first chronicle references to the word "Voronezh" are dated 1177, when the Ryazan prince Yaropolk, having lost the battle, fled "to Voronozh" and there was moving "from town to town". Modern data of archeology and history interpret Voronezh as a geographical region, which included the Voronezh river (tributary of the Don ) and a number of settlements. In the lower reaches of the river, a unique Slavic town-planning complex of the 8th – early 11th century was discovered, which covered the territory of the present city of Voronezh and its environs (about 42   km long, about 13 forts and many unfortified villages). By the 12th – 13th centuries, most of the old towns were desolate, but new settlements appeared upstream, closer to Ryazan . [15] [16] [17] [18]

For many years, the hypothesis of the Soviet historian Vladimir Zagorovsky dominated: he produced the toponym "Voronezh" from the hypothetical Slavic personal name Voroneg . This man allegedly gave the name of a small town in the Chernigov Principality (now the village of Voronizh in Ukraine [19] ). Later, in the 11th or 12th century, the settlers were able to "transfer" this name to the Don region, where they named the second city Voronezh, and the river got its name from the city. [20] [21] However, now many researchers criticize the hypothesis, since in reality neither the name of Voroneg nor the second city was revealed, and usually the names of Russian cities repeated the names of the rivers, but not vice versa.

The linguistic comparative analysis of the name "Voronezh" was carried out by the Khovansky Foundation in 2009. There is an indication of the place names of many countries in Eurasia, which may partly be not only similar in sound, but also united by common Indo-European languages: Varanasi , Varna , Verona , Brno , etc. [22]

A comprehensive scientific analysis was conducted in 2015–2016 by the historian Pavel Popov. His conclusion: "Voronezh" is a probable Slavic macrotoponym associated with outstanding signs of nature, has a root voron- (from the proto-Slavic vorn ) in the meaning of "black, dark" and the suffix -ezh (-azh, -ozh ). It was not “transferred” and in the 8th - 9th centuries it marked a vast territory covered with black forests (oak forests) - from the mouth of the Voronezh river to the Voronozhsky annalistic forests in the middle and upper reaches of the river, and in the west to the Don (many forests were cut down). The historian believes that the main "city" of the early town-planning complex could repeat the name of the region – Voronezh. Now the hillfort is located in the administrative part of the modern city, in the Voronezh upland oak forest. This is one of Europe's largest ancient Slavic hillforts, the area of which – more than 9 hectares – 13 times the area of the main settlement in Kyiv before the baptism of Rus. [18] [23]

In it is assumed that the word "Voronezh" means bluing - a technique to increase the corrosion resistance of iron products. This explanation fits well with the proximity to the ancient city of Voronezh of a large iron deposit and the city of Stary Oskol. As well as the name of Voroneț Monastery known for its blue shade.

Folk etymology claims the name comes from combining the Russian words for raven ( ворон ) and hedgehog ( еж ) into Воронеж . According to this explanation two Slavic tribes named after the animals used this combination to name the river which later in turn provided the name for a settlement. There is not believed to be any scientific support for this explanation.

In the 16th century, the Middle Don basin, including the Voronezh river, was gradually conquered by Muscovy from the Nogai Horde (a successor state of the Golden Horde ), and the current city of Voronezh was established in 1585 by Feodor   I as a fort protecting the Muravsky Trail trade route against the slave raids of the Nogai and Crimean Tatars . The city was named after the river. [2]

In the 17th century, Voronezh gradually evolved into a sizable town. Weronecz is shown on the Worona river in Resania in Joan Blaeu 's map of 1645. [24] Peter the Great built a dockyard in Voronezh where the Azov Flotilla was constructed for the Azov campaigns in 1695 and 1696. This fleet, the first ever built in Russia, included the first Russian ship of the line , Goto Predestinatsia . The Orthodox diocese of Voronezh was instituted in 1682 and its first bishop, Mitrofan of Voronezh , was later proclaimed the town's patron saint.

Owing to the Voronezh Admiralty Wharf, for a short time, Voronezh became the largest city of South Russia and the economic center of a large and fertile region. In 1711, it was made the seat of the Azov Governorate , which eventually morphed into the Voronezh Governorate .

In the 19th century, Voronezh was a center of the Voronezhskaj gubernia. Manufacturing industry (mills, tallow-melting, butter-making, soap, leather, and other works) as well as bread, cattle, suet , and the hair trade developed in the town. A railway connected Voronezh with Moscow in 1868 and Rostov-on-Don in 1871.

World War II

During World War II , Voronezh was the scene of fierce fighting between Soviet and combined Axis troops. The Germans used it as a staging area for their attack on Stalingrad , and made it a key crossing point on the Don River. In June 1941, two BM-13 (Fighting machine #13 Katyusha ) artillery installations were built at the Voronezh excavator factory. In July, the construction of Katyushas was rationalized so that their manufacture became easier and the time of volley repetition was shortened from five minutes to fifteen seconds. More than 300 BM-13 units manufactured in Voronezh were used in a counterattack near Moscow in December 1941. In October   22, 1941, the advance of the German troops prompted the establishment of a defense committee in the city. On November   7, 1941, there was a troop parade, devoted to the anniversary of the October Revolution . Only three such parades were organized that year: in Moscow, Kuybyshev , and Voronezh. In late June 1942, the city was attacked by German and Hungarian forces. In response, Soviet forces formed the Voronezh Front . By July   6, the German army occupied the western river-bank suburbs before being subjected to a fierce Soviet counter-attack. By July   24 the frontline had stabilised along the Voronezh River as the German forces continued southeast into the Great Bend of the Don. The attack on Voronezh represented the first phase of the German Army's 1942 campaign in the Soviet Union, codenamed Case Blue .

Until January   25, 1943, parts of the Second German Army and the Second Hungarian Army occupied the western part of Voronezh. During Operation Little Saturn , the Ostrogozhsk–Rossosh Offensive , and the Voronezhsko-Kastornenskoy Offensive, the Voronezh Front exacted heavy casualties on Axis forces. On January   25, 1943, Voronezh was liberated after ten days of combat . During the war the city was almost completely ruined, with 92% of all buildings destroyed.

By 1950, Voronezh had been rebuilt. Most buildings and historical monuments were repaired. It was also the location of a prestigious Suvorov Military School , a boarding school for young boys who were considered to be prospective military officers, many of whom had been orphaned by war. [25]

In 1950–1960, new factories were established: a tire factory, a machine-tool factory, a factory of heavy mechanical pressing, and others. In 1968, Serial production of the Tupolev Tu-144 supersonic plane was established at the Voronezh Aviation factory. In clusters of tax incentives and different preferences, the full support of the authorities. A cluster of Oil and Gas Equipment, Radio-electronic cluster, Furniture cluster, IT cluster, Cluster aircraft, Cluster Electromechanics, Transport and logistics cluster, Cluster building materials and technologies. [44]

Information about the original urban layout of Voronezh is contained in the "Patrol Book" of 1615. At that time, the city fortress was logged and located on the banks of the Voronezh River. In plan, it was an irregular quadrangle with a perimeter of about 238 meter. inside it, due to lack of space, there was no housing or siege yards, and even the cathedral church was supposed to be taken out. However, at this small fortress there was a large garrison - 666 households of service people. These courtyards were reliably protected by the second line of fortifications by a standing prison on taras with 25 towers covered with earth; behind the prison was a moat, and beyond the moat there were stakes. Voronezh was a typical military settlement ( ostrog ). [45] In the city prison there were only settlements of military men: Streletskaya, Kazachya, Belomestnaya atamanskaya, Zatinnaya and Pushkarskaya. [46] The posad population received the territory between the ostrog and the river, where the Monastyrskaya settlements (at the Assumption Monastery) was formed. Subsequently, the Yamnaya Sloboda was added to them, and on the other side of the fort, on the Chizhovka Mountain, the Chizhovskaya Sloboda of archers and Cossacks appeared. As a result, the Voronezh settlements surrounded the fortress in a ring. The location of the parish churches emphasized this ring-like and even distribution of settlements: the Ilyinsky Church of the Streletskaya Sloboda, the Pyatnitskaya Cossack and Pokrovskaya Belomestnaya were brought out to the passage towers of the prison. The Nikolskaya Church of the Streletskaya Sloboda was located near the marketplace (and, accordingly, the front facade of the fortress), and the paired ensemble of the Rozhdestvenskaya and Georgievskaya churches of the Cossack Sloboda marked the main street of the city, going from the Cossack Gate to the fortress tower. [47]

Voronezh experiences a humid continental climate ( Köppen : Dfb ) with long, cold winters and short, warm summers. [48]
