Scholarship overview.

The Stossel in the Classroom Essay Contest gives students an opportunity to express themselves and win great prizes. The contest is open to students in grades 5 to 12, age 10 to 18, residing in North America, Hawaii, or at a U.S. military address. Students may submit their essays directly, or have them submitted by a teacher or parent. Employees of Stossel in the Classroom, Stossel TV, and Center for Independent Thought, or any person or organization involved in the operation and/or setup of the contest, and their immediate family members are not eligible for this contest. Previous winners of a Stossel in the Classroom first-place prize are not eligible for prizes in subsequent contests. Be sure to proofread your essay before it’s submitted and be mindful of the 500 – 1,000 word requirement. Most of all, be sure to cite your sources and check your facts. If you’re a 5th – 12th grader who has a passion for history and/or economics, we encourage you to apply!

Every year, we hold an essay contest to give your students an opportunity to express themselves and win great prizes. This year, we’re opening up that opportunity even more—and giving away over $12,000.

For the first time, we’re not limiting students to a single topic. Students will have  three topics  to choose from, allowing them to write on the subject that speaks to them the most.

Our contest is open to students age 10-18, grades 5-12, residing in North America or Hawaii.

Oxford students win national essay contest

Oxford High School seniors Ryan Belsito, Ashley Cummings and Tyler Olson, all students in Marcia Krantz’s English classes, were honorable mention winners in Stossel in the Classroom’s first student essay contest. The contest was sponsored by the Sandra and Lawrence Post Family Foundation.

Stossel in the Classroom, a project of the nonprofit Center for Independent Thought, provides free curriculum materials to teachers, using video clips from John Stossel television shows and specials.

Students ages 13 to 18 were asked to write an essay about What’s Great About America, after viewing Stossel’s Fox News special of the same name. Some 7,514 essays were submitted from students around the country, with 222 chosen as prize winners.

BSU sophomore wins $500 in national essay contest

Andrea Schwinghammer, a sophomore at Bemidji State University, recently took third place in a national essay contest organized by television news personality John Stossel’s “Stossel in the Classroom.”

Schwinghammer is a home-schooled high schooler taking classes at Bemidji State as a Post-Secondary Education Option student. She submitted her essay, “Politicians and Promises: What happens when people play god,” at the behest of Karl Salscheider, professor of human performance, health and sport at Bemidji State.

Schwinghammer’s essay finished third out of 3,944 entries from across the nation, and was one of 225 total essays to win prizes ranging from $50 to $1,500. The top two winners receive all-expenses-paid trips to New York City for a taping of one of Stossel’s weekly shows.

“When I saw this essay contest, I thought she’d have a shot,” Salschieder said. “I thought about her high grade point average, and then thought that as a deep thinker she would be creative in analyzing the aspects of where politicians go wrong in making promises they can’t keep, and the ethics that go along with that.”

Salscheider describes Schwinghammer as an excellent, innovative student.

“She’s a very atypical student,” Salscheider said. “But oftentimes, exemplary students are atypical in multiple ways.”

“It is exciting to see her do so well,” Salscheider said. “I’m glad that we can service her as a home-schooler, as a PSEO student. It’s a win/win for the homeschool community and for BSU.”

Stossel hosts a weekly show on Fox Business Channel and was co-anchor of ABC’s 20/20 until Oct. 2009. He has won 19 Emmy awards and is the author of two books. “Stossel in the Classroom” is a project of the non-profit Center for Independent Thought, which provides free curriculum materials to teachers using video clips from Stossel’s television shows and specials. Contest #11 That Works for My Students: Stossel in the Classroom Argument Contest

Each year for the past three years, I have assigned an argument essay contest to my eighth-graders. The contest is sponsored by Stossel in the Classroom (SITC) , an educational website hosted by John Stossel , former consumer reporter and correspondent for ABC’s 20/20 , and current Fox News contributor. According to the SITC website’s About page, the “program is sponsored by the Center for Independent Thought , an IRS 501(c)3 tax-exempt non-profit educational foundation, funded entirely by private donations.”

SITC offers teachers several teaching resources, including free DVDs featuring Stossel’s news segments with accompanying lesson plans and teacher guides, as well as its annual essay contest and its new video contest. The themes of many of the lessons and DVDs “challenge conventional wisdom” about many current issues, according to this explanation on the Center for Independent Thought’s website .

Here are some details about the essay contest.

Age Range for the Contest: Ages 12-18.

Odds of Winning: For the 2018 contest, 87 essays were awarded a prize out of 2,200 submitted. That’s about a one-in-25 chance. That’s not bad, I tell my kids. A couple of years ago, I remember the odds being about one in forty.

Topic or Prompt: Each year features a different prompt. The 2018 contest, which has concluded, was:

Natural disasters often bring people together, as they undertake rescue operations and work to rebuild their communities. People outside the affected communities usually offer additional support. But what about those that see a disaster as a way to make money? Watch John Stossel’s video about “price gouging” and write a 500-1000 word essay, arguing for or against laws that prohibit price “gouging” during an emergency. How do such laws affect disaster victims? How do they change the incentives of potential suppliers?

The video mentioned in the prompt appears on the website and is easily accessible by students. I usually show students the video up to two or three times so we can discuss it thoroughly. Our discussions usually require that we listen to the video again so we can catch exactly what was said and/or what was not said.  My students are usually engaged with the prompts, which always have a current events theme, which can often veer into the political. Regardless, the topics always give students something new and complex to think about.

This past spring, my students couldn’t believe the controversy surrounding price gouging. They had never considered the nuances present during times of a disaster when people are in desperate need of crucial supplies.

Best Thing (to me) About This Contest: I would say that the best aspect of this contest is the multi-media approach that it provides. There are not many times during the school year when students must watch and listen to videos in order to develop a viewpoint, write a corresponding thesis, and then complete an argument.

Skills Addressed:

• In the Missouri Learning Standards , students are required to utilize technology, including the Internet, to write and publish their work. The SITC essay contest, because of its reliance on the Stossel videos, heavily involve technology. Students may also research on their own to gain the information needed for their essays; I also provide related articles and copies of Stossel’s book No, They Can’t: Why Government  Fails–But Individuals Succeed . I have ten copies of this book in my room. One year, the contest rules stated that students were required to quote the book at least once, so I ordered a handful from Amazon .
• Students must also provide a Works Cited page that lists their sources. The DAR American History Essay Contest also requires this. I also require it on several of our class assignments; I think it’s a good thing for students to get into the habit of providing their sources in a consistent format. It gets them ready for high school.

Length: 500-1,000 words. I like that the contest has a minimum as well as a maximum word count, since some of my students will want to write as little as possible if there is no minimum provided.

Deadline: Mid-February of each year. Check the rules page for exact dates for 2019. to submit these essays, teachers are encouraged to electronically submit their students’ essay en masse. This is a little cumbersome, but I know in the past, I have found time to do this at home.

Prizes:  A total of $9,500 in cash prizes are awarded. First place receives $1,500 plus an expenses-paid summer trip with a teacher and/or guardian to New York City and lunch with Stossel; second $1,000. There are ten finalists who win $200 each; 25 semi-finals who win $100 each; and fifty honorable mention winners who receive $50 each.

Unexpected Bonus:  Easily found mentor texts! Winning entries for the most recent contest and previous years’ contests are easily found on the website. These are super helpful to show students the level of quality this contest requires.

For More Info: Browse the SITC website , which has all the information you need to have your students enter the contest. I like how students can direct their ideas however they choose to make their argument. While there is a specific prompt, students are free to approach it as they desire.

My students have never placed in this contest. I believe we have entered it for the past three or four years. We spend about two weeks of class time working on it. Apparently, we should spend more!

Happening during the spring right before we begin preparing for state testing, this essay contest provides a good review of the most difficult type of expository writing: the argument.

Vladimir Putin took advantage of New Year’s Eve celebrations to round up suspected illegal immigrants and force them to immediately enlist in his war against Ukraine, according to multiple local media reports.

Some 3,000 migrants were detained in St Petersburg alone, as authorities patrolled the streets of Russia’s second largest city carrying out checks purportedly “to prevent crime”, reported the Kremlin’s RIA news agency.

Labour migrants from central Asia perform vital services across Russia’s economy, which is struggling amid the drain of Putin’s invasion of Ukraine and the international isolation that has come as a result.

Yet Putin has repeatedly vilified them as “not an easy problem” to be addressed, and now appears to be recruiting them to make up for the heavy losses he is suffering in Donetsk and Kharkiv .

Some of the migrants held across Russian cities were handed on-the-spot military summonses, while others were forcibly taken to military enlistment offices, reported the Moscow Times . The migrants are predominantly from central Asian nations such as Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Armenia.

The authorities claimed that more than 600 of those detained were in breach of various clauses of migration legislation. More than 100 now face deportation, the report added.

A man from Tajikistan who was dressed as Santa Claus was among those held by the authorities in Moscow, reported Russian online news outlet SOTA.

The raids on Sunday night were carried out near metro stations as well as at popular gathering points for seeing in the new year, such as squares in central St Petersburg, reported news outlet Bumaga.

Russia’s top investigative organ, the Investigative Committee, said it was opening a criminal case against three migrants over “acts of hooliganism” against Russian servicemen in the west-central Russian city Chelyabinsk.

“A crowd of drunken migrants attacked two young men demobilised from the frontline, one soldier was hit with a baton,” the committee said on their official Telegram channel. The reports cannot be independently verified, with Russian media closely controlled by the Kremlin.

In a recent address Putin said Russia has more than 10 million labour migrants. The Russian government has taken increasingly desperate measures to expand its armed forces amid the losses it has suffered in Ukraine, including extending the age limit for compulsory military service.

Last month, Putin signed a decree to increase the maximum size of his armed forces by 170,000 personnel, to 1.32 million.
